The 16-year-old siblings received their vaccinations at the Laverton Respiratory Hub last week. Mother Nicole said the triplets had wanted to get a vaccine as soon as they were able to, so they could safely return to school and playing sport. Most importantly, Nicole said Will, Max and Ella were especially looking forward to visiting their Pa, who lives in Ballarat and has pancreatic cancer. Nicole said the triplets wanted to encourage other young people to get vaccinated against coronavirus. “It is such a positive story of moving towards opening up and they are excited,” she said. Werribee MP Joanne Ryan has also praised Wyndham residents who have been vaccinated. “To my community, I want to say, this is a race and I’m glad to see that you’re in it,” she said. Do the right thing: GP A prominent western suburbs doctor has called out those breaching chief health officer directions during the COVID lockdown. Australian Medical Association state council chairman Mukesh Haikerwal said the system wouldn’t work unless everyone complied. It comes as an Altona North family – widely misreported as coming from Newport – was visited by police for allegedly failing to comply with COVID isolation requirements. A Victoria Police spokesperson said officers were called to help Department Health staff at

the family’s Altona North home. “Victoria Police assisted authorised officers from the Department of Health serve a Direction and Detention Notice on the occupants of an address in Altona North [Wednesday],” the spokesperson said. “At the time police attended there were no identified breaches of chief health officer directions.” A Department of Health spokesperson said family members had been served notices to remain in their homes and the premises would be monitored. Dr Haikerwal, who is delivering vaccines at both the Altona North Respiratory Clinic

and a trial ‘surge centre’ at Altona Badminton Centre, said people not following the rules were putting everyone “in jeopardy”. “The system works on fairness, telling the truth and sticking to the rules, and each one of those is not being followed,” he said. “People are not being fair: they’re booking three or four different appointments in different places just so they can be head of the crowd - and not cancelling. “They’re not being truthful: they’re coming and saying that they have no symptoms when they have. And also they’re not complying. “And each of those things is putting us all in jeopardy.”

Dr Haikerwal said he had faced abuse for asking people to do the right thing. “Why should they get away with it when I keep getting clobbered every time they completely stuff up the system by not doing the right thing? “Why is it when I tell somebody to take their mask from under their chin to over their nose where it should be, that they abuse me? “By doing what they’re doing, they’re potentially contaminating everybody around them and they don’t care.” The health deapartment reported 445 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, of which 38 were in Wyndham and 15 in Hobsons Bay.

Cricket sculpture bowls up suburb controversy By Alesha Capone The Committee for Wyndham has expressed concern that a major artwork erected in Wyndham is actually related to Altona. Under the state government’s Western Roads Upgrade, a $425,000 artwork titled Backyard has been installed near the Duncans Road interchange in Werribee. The sculpture, inspired by games of cricket in artist Jon Campbell’s Altona childhood backyard, was commissioned from a number of submissions received during an

independent selection process. The sculpture was delivered through a public-private partnership with Netflow and Major Road Projects Victoria. However, the Committee for Wyndham (C4W) chief executive Barbara McLure said that the organisation has written “to both Major Road Projects Victoria and Netflow expressing our disappointment that the artwork focuses on a backyard in Altona”. “We are puzzled why an Altona-focused feature was placed in Wyndham, when Altona is in the City of Hobsons Bay,” Ms McLure said.

“The location of the sculpture is at the entrance to Werribee Park one of Victoria’s most important tourist precincts, and to Werribee South where much of the green vegetables supplied into Victoria and Australia’s supermarkets are grown. “This would have been a great opportunity to feature icons local to our Wyndham community, to be seen by those travelling down the freeway.” She said the sculpture was a “missed opportunity” to also promote Wyndham. “We do not wish to denigrate the artist’s work and we acknowledge the interchange has been

a great addition to our road infrastructure.” After Star Weekly published news about the sculpture being installed last month, several readers said they thought the $425,000 spent on the artwork could have been better used to support local residents and businesses doing it tough during the COVID-19 pandemic. Netflow chief executive Pedro Uzquiza said the sculpture was a “visible reminder of the significant and long-term investment being made in the west and demonstrates the value that can be achieved through public-private partnerships”.

Ian’s marathon dream By Alesha Capone Werribee’s Ian Gainey says he hopes to become the first person ever to complete 30 Melbourne Marathons so that he can provide inspiration to other wheelchair athletes and people with a disability. Mr Gainey, who represented Australia at the 1984 and 1988 Paralympic Games, has already participated in an impressive 29 Melbourne Marathons. He completed his first Melbourne Marathon in a personally-built road-racing wheelchair during 1979. Now aged 69, Mr Gainey said he had hoped last year would be his 30th time completing the marathon, but that COVID caused the event’s cancellation. He is optimistic that this year’s marathon, scheduled for November 10, will go ahead and has been training every two to three days in the lead-up.

Mr Gainey said he also hopes his family will be able to see him come through the gates of the MCG at the marathon’s end. “That will open the flood banks for tears – I’ll be a mess emotionally,” he said. Mr Gainey contracted polio when he was just 18-months-old, before the vaccine for the illness was developed in the 1950s. He spent two years in hospital, along with many other children. As a result of polio’s impact on his lower limbs Mr Gainey has used forearm crutches and callipers strapped to his legs to walk short distances since the age of two. He started playing wheelchair basketball during the 1970s and later took up swimming and the marathon, winning medals at national and international events. At the World Stoke Mandeville Wheelchair Games in 1986, he set a world record in the 10,000 men’s marathon of 32 minutes and 23.70 seconds.

“You can do anything if you prepare for it and prepare mentally,” Mr Gainey said. “Don’t believe people if they say you can’t do anything.” He said after completing his first Melbourne Marathon, his aim was to join the Melbourne Marathon Spartans Club, which is for people who have completed 10 of the marathons. After achieving this, Mr Gainey pushed on to achieved 20 marathons – the only person to have ever done so – “and thought of retiring”. But in 2016, after surviving five months of intensive chemotherapy treatment for bowel cancer, Mr Gainey was still asking doctors when he could compete in his next marathon. Mr Gainey said he intends to retire after his 30th Melbourne Marathon. “I enjoy the time out there over the 42 kilometres, talking to other runners and I encourage them, while they encourage me,” he said.

The 2021 Manor Lakes Community Fund, an annual initiative by the Dennis Family Corporation, is now open for applications. Not-for-profit groups in Wyndham have been invited to apply for a financial grant of $1500 to support a community project. Since commencing in 2003, the Manor Lakes Community Fund has distributed more than $330,000 to community groups in Wyndham. Previous recipients include sporting, support and environmental groups, schools and emergency services. The grants program recognises the instrumental role community groups play in connecting people and fostering community spirit. Dennis Family Corporation chief executive Peter Levinge urged Wyndham groups involved in good causes to submit an application. “Dennis Family Corporation is proud to support the local communities in areas where we operate our business,” Mr Levinge said. “We believe their efforts greatly contribute towards the liveability of our estates. “We look forward to rewarding many more deserving applicants this year.” To apply for a grant, applicants must be a not-for-profit group that has been operating in Wyndham for at least 12 months. Applications must include a description of 250 words or less about what the grant will be used for and what benefit it will bring to the local community. Diverse images of Wyndham residents, captured by a local photographer, are being celebrated in a Werribee public art installation. The outdoor exhibition, titled Many Faces, One Wyndham, will be on display in Station Place until June 2022. The installation is an extension of David Mullins’ Faces of Wyndham project. The initiative aims to showcase the cultural backgrounds of the municipality’s residents, including traditional owners of the land and immigrants from overseas. Mullins is hoping to profile a total of 100 Wyndham residents and their personal stories through his photos. Wyndham’s creative city portfolio holder, Cr Marcel Mahfoud, said the council was proud to support local creatives and deliver on its commitment to make public art accessible. “We are proud to present a collection of portraits of people from our local community,”

Cr Mahfoud said. “The colourful portraits are on display in the glazed entry at Werribee train station, brightening up our city centre. “This temporary outdoor installation is captivating, so if you are in walking distance of Werribee train station, make sure you walk past and view the works.” In Wyndham, 41 per cent of residents speak a language other than English at home, according to the 2016 national census. “Wyndham is enriched through the many different cultures and peoples that make up our diverse city,” Cr Mahfoud said. “This installation celebrates cultural diversity through capturing not only the faces of these people, but also their personalities, their dress, expression of culture and the communities that they represent.” Details: www.davidmullins.com.au/ many-faces

By Alesha Capone Former Wyndham councillor Intaj Khan has launched a new campaign aimed at allowing free movement for people who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Mr Khan has erected a campaign billboard at Sayers and Leakes roads in Laverton, and is planning to put up another in Williams Landing later this month. “In my view there should be no more lockdowns for fully vaccinated people, borders should reopen and businesses have a chance to be saved,” Mr Khan said. “It does not make sense to release people from lockdown once the 70 per cent target has been achieved, why do fully vaccinated people have to remain in lockdown for unvaccinated people to get vaccinated? “In the current situation there is no clear road map for recovery, it is frustrating and only contributing to a growing financial and mental health disaster.” Mr Khan said international vaccine passports should be created for international travel. “The vaccinated families should be freely allowed to travel without any limits and do business with other fully vaccinated people,” he said. Meanwhile, Werribee Mercy Hospital’s COVID-19 vaccination clinic delivered its 3000th jab into a recipient’s arm last week. Ross Walker and his wife attended the clinic for their second vaccine dose last Tuesday. The Werribee Mercy clinic has progressively increased the number of vaccines it has administered to about 360 vaccines each day, since opening to the public on August 11. Mr Walker said that he and his wife’s only daughter was set to have her first baby in about 10 weeks.

“We haven’t been able to see her during this lockdown as she lives outside our five kilometre zone, but we really hope that everyone is vaccinated soon so that restrictions are eased and we get to see our second grandchild soon after the birth,” he said. Werribee Mercy Hospital’s COVID-19 vaccination clinic started operating out of St Vincent’s Private, Werribee, earlier this week. Hub nurse unit manager Angela Cook said: “We’re appealing for everyone from Wyndham to book in for their vaccination as soon as possible to protect everyone in our community from falling seriously ill from COVID-19”. People living in Melbourne’s west are getting vaccinated at a higher rate than anywhere else in Victoria, new data reveals. An Australian Bureau of Statistics report released last week said the rate of vaccination in the west showed “there is a significant younger population throughout Melbourne’s west, resulting in vaccines not being available to most of the population until later dates”. Between August 27 and September 5, Wyndham, Melton, Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay and Brimbank each recorded an increase of six or more per cent of residents getting vaccinated, compared to the Victorian weekly rate of 5.05 per cent and the national average of 5.17 per cent. “Younger populations in Melton and Wyndham have seen the biggest increases, with Wyndham having a 8.8 per cent increase in the population getting their first dose,” the report said. As of September 5, 58.2 per cent of Wyndham residents (119,705 people) had their first COVID-19 vaccine. In Wyndham, this included 6284 residents aged 16-18 and 102,769 residents aged 18-40. ‘Dire’ need for foster carers Kiera Kauler says that patience and understanding are two important qualities for foster carers to have. The 23-year-old, who entered Victoria’s foster care system at three months of age, lived in about 50 different homes – including in the western suburbs – before her 18th birthday. With Foster Care Week running until Sunday, Anglicare Victoria has issued a plea for new foster carers. Chief executive Paul McDonald said the situation was “dire” with thousands of young people needing care. Ms Kauler said foster carers needed to understand that many young people have

complex needs and a traumatic background. “I think foster carers need to take into account that many kids are learning things for the first time, such as what is right and wrong, what a healthy relationship is,” she said. She said it was challenging for children to adapt to a new home and set of strangers each time they had to move. “One second you think everything is fine, then next thing all your stuff is being dragged out in garbage bags, or you have nothing because they keep your stuff,” she said. While growing up, Ms Kauler she was very protective of her brother, who has cerebral

palsy and an intellectual disability. “We landed in a very abusive home and I was always focused on trying to protect him,” Ms Kauler said. She was once made to sleep in a closet by her foster carers. On a more positive note, Ms Kauler said there were “a couple of families I actually adored” from her time in foster care, including a single, gay man she lived with for about three years as a teenager. “He is still my dad to this day – he is gorgeous and I love him,” she said. Giving thanks for pets Manor Lakes resident Jacqueline appreciates the happiness that her family’s two Jack Russell dogs Poppy and Daisy bring into their lives. With World Animal Day approaching on October 4, animal organisations across the world are urging pet-owners to give thanks for the companionship and joy that furred, feathered and scaled creatures bring into their lives. Jacqueline said Poppy and Daisy loved walking by the lake, watching her and her husband work during lockdown, “helping” to do the dishes and snuggling on the lounge. Daisy has been with the family for 2.5 years and Poppy for 1.5 years. “They are really lovely little dogs, we have really enjoyed having them and they are a great addition to the family,” Jacqueline said. Jack Russells are the most popular dog breed in Wyndham, with 1486 registered with

the council. There are also 1398 Staffordshire bull terriers registered with council, 1319 Labradors and 990 Cavalier King Charles spaniels. Overall, there are more than 21,000 dogs registered in Wyndham and more than 6000 cats. Sports hall divides councillors By Alesha Capone A suggestion to have a small sports hall constructed at the Jamieson Way Community Centre and Reserve in Point Cook has divided Wyndham’s councillors. Cr Susan McIntyre put forward the idea at a meeting last month, when the council was discussing a $6.45 million draft master plan for the Jamieson Way facility. The draft plan proposes adding a third kindergarten room at the centre, along with a separate multi-purpose sports pavilion, two

new netball courts, an “eastern” carpark and a new children’s playground. The draft also recommends reducing the number of tennis courts at the centre from four to two. Cr McIntyre suggested that the council include a “compact sports facility” in the draft masterplan, around the size of a basketball court. Cr McIntyre said the facility could be used for dancing, performing arts, badminton and table tennis, much like a school hall. She said that as Point Cook’s population has

grown over the past 10 years, many residents have requested such a facility. “There is a community need for this facility and the time to address it is now,” Cr McIntyre said. She said building the sports facility would likely cost between $2 million to $4 million. However, Cr Jennie Barrera said council officers had reported that building the small sports hall “did not stack up”. Cr Josh Gilligan said he feared adding the small sports facility to Jamieson Way Community Centre could cost the council up

to $13 million. Cr Gilligan said that if the facility was included in the draft masterplan, it meant other areas of Wyndham also deserved to have such infrastructure built. However, Cr McIntyre’s suggestion to include the small sports facility in the council plan was supported by the majority of Wyndham councillors. Helping put food on the table in Shepparton A community food program run in partnership by Parks Victoria, refugee settlement agency AMES Australia and the Tarneit Sikh Temple is helping feed families during Shepparton’s lockdown. The program has seen the internationallyfamous flower beds at Werribee Park Mansion turned into vegetable gardens to help feed disadvantaged families in Wyndham during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the program is being extended to help Shepparton residents after COVID-19 hit the regional city. Vegetables from the Werribee Mansion’s gardens were harvested last Thursday by volunteers from the local Karen community, in line with COVID-safe protocols. The food was then used in meal packs put together by the Sikh Temple’s kitchen. Volunteers from the temple have been given permits to travel to Shepparton to distribute the food.

Parks Victoria ranger James Brincat said the outreach work to Shepparton was the latest phase in the food program, which has supported hundreds of families since the pandemic hit Australia in March last year. “The program has had some wonderful outcomes,” Mr Brincat said. “We’ve harvested thousands of kilograms of veggies and the food has gone to support hundreds of families.” Werribee Sikh Kitchen founder Jasvinder Sidhu said many of the people in lockdown across Shepparton were from diverse communities. “Part of being a Sikh is to share,” Mr Sidhu said. “So, we want to do something to make a difference in the lives of people in lockdown. “Because of the lockdown in Shepparton there is a shortage of fresh food, this might make their situation a little easier.” Hsar Ju and Adam Xerri from Parks Victoria with some harvested silverbeet.

Taxpayers to pay for land loss By Alesha Capone Taxpayers will foot a $9 million bill to make up for the loss of 63 kilometres of environmentally significant land during construction of the Cherry Creek youth justice centre, new documents show. The state government is building the $419 million centre to the west of Werribee, 1.5 kilometres north-east of Little River Road where it joins the Princes Freeway. The construction will lead to the loss of 28.23 hectares of Natural Temperate Grassland of the Victorian Volcanic Plain (NTGVVP) and

35.66 hectares of Golden Sun Moth habitat, amounting to 63.89 kilometres being wiped out in total. The NTGVVP supports a variety of nationally-threatened animals and more than 20 threatened plants, while the Golden Sun Moth is critically endangered. The Victorian Department of Justice and Regulation (DJR) has committed to paying $9 million to the not-for-profit organisation Trust for Nature “for the purpose of securing and managing an offset area”. The offset area will compensate for the repurposed land at the jail and its access road,

by securing land at another site which will be managed over time to make up for loss of endangered flora and fauna at Cherry Creek. The federal Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment has ordered the DJR to enter into a written bond agreement, requiring Trust for Nature to hold the $9 million in trust until the offset land is identified and purchased. The $9 million will form the basis of a payment to purchase environmental services for the offset area. If the cost of purchasing environmental services is greater than $9 million, DJR will have to pay additional funds

to Trust for Nature. Earlier this month, the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment issued an extension allowing the DJR to take longer than originally approved to find an appropriate offset site. The DJR has been given until April 2022 to do so. Construction is now under way on the Cherry Creek youth justice centre, with completion scheduled for next year. The centre will have about 140 beds, a 12-bed mental health unit and an intensive supervision unit of at least eight beds.

Chicken run for fun A rubber chicken is bringing fun and friendship to the wider Melbourne area as part of a COVID-safe community relay. Named “Bubble Bird”, the idea started with Victorian man Peter Mitchell, who decided to use the rubber chicken as a relay baton for his regular running group during lockdown. With pandemic restrictions preventing large groups of people from exercising together, individuals or paired runners would pass Bubble Bird to each other while jogging on Mount Martha’s Big Bird trail. The runners handed Bubble Bird, who is attached to a Garmin watch and built-in hand sanitiser, to each other when their five-kilometre radiuses overlapped. Participants from across the state have joined in and have taken the rubber chicken on a trek of more than 1700 kilometres while running, walking and cycling. Local resident Michelle collected Bubble

Bird from Wyndham Vale train station earlier this month, from a Lara resident named Bill who has permission to work in the city. Michelle said she found out about Bubble Bird through her friend Nicola, who is part of the Wyndham Vale Parkrun group. For her time with Bubble Bird, Michelle dressed up as Little Red Riding Hood and ran with her partner. “I’ve enjoyed becoming part of something that makes me happy and connects me to other people for a common purpose, as well as having a run and enjoying the whole process,” Michelle said. Werribee singer-songwriter Daniel Reeves says his latest single aims to spread positivity during the COVID-19 pandemic. World Learning, which was released on August 27, has reached number five on the iTunes Country Songs Chart. Reeves said he wrote the song about five years ago while on the road travelling for concerts and gigs. He said he decided to release World Learning this year because it fits the theme of wanting to re-connect with friends and family during lockdown. “It’s about all those support networks that are essential to us as human beings and I feel like I wrote it for a lot of my friends who were feeling a similar disconnect,” he said. “It is relevant now, because if you have positive thoughts, then you’ll have positive things happening in your life and I know I have to own the decisions I have made.”

Reeves, whose album Defined came out in January, said he has been writing a lot of songs while at home during the pandemic. He said fans have contacted him to say they have drawn strength from World Learning during the nation’s successive lockdowns. “The messages I’ve received have been really positive, I think the song is perfect for now – I think it is really connecting with people,” he said. Reeves said he has enjoyed playing his music on Facebook Live and doing radio interviews during lockdown, but he missed the energy of live shows. Pupils learn from Olympian By Alesha Capone Athlete Rhydian Cowley has shared his experiences of competing at the Tokyo Olympics with pupils from The Grange P-12 College in Hoppers Crossing, as part of a Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) virtual classroom program. About 80 pupils from the school, including youngsters from the college’s primary Sports Science Academy, took part in the online session recently. Under the VIS’ ‘Be Fit. Be Well’ program, athletes returning from the Tokyo Olympic Games have chatted with pupils at schools across the state.

The ‘Be Fit. Be Well’ program, funded by School Sport Victoria, is free for government schools to participate in. Rhydian Cowley, a 50 kilometre race walker who placed eighth in his event in Tokyo while representing Australia, spoke to grade 4 to 6 pupils. The Grange’s Sport Science Academy learning specialist, Bryar Kerridge, said that Cowley talked about his early sporting days, training, and taking part in the Olympics in a COVID world. “The kids asked some amazing questions and one of the things we teach them is to think about what they want out of sessions like this, they asked questions about mindset

and sportsmanship,” Ms Kerridge said. “During these times it is important to be able to connect kids to the world, major events and things outside our school. “We are really thankful to the VIS and Rhydian for making this happen.” Cowley said: “The students were all so enthusiastic and engaged, it felt like they were really excited to talk to an Olympian”. Snake catcher service available Wyndham council has reminded residents that it offers a free professional snake catching service to locals. Snakes are usually are most active during September and October. Last year the council received 316 calls regarding snakes, including after hours and at weekends. If a resident spots a snake on their residential property and calls the council within 30 minutes, a qualified professional snake catcher will attend and remove the animal. Council will not send a snake catcher if the reptile is located in an industrial or commercial premises, or in an open public space and poses no immediate threat to the community. Wyndham’s community safety portfolio holder, Cr Susan McIntyre said that prevention was the best way to deter snakes from accessing a property. “We ask that property owners and other Wyndham residents do their bit to keep snakes away from their property by keeping yards clean, by cutting their grass short and by ensuring rubbish is disposed of properly in bins,” she said, If you see a snake on your property, watch it from a safe distance and do not touch or approach the snake. Path upgrades Wyndham council has embarked on a $4 million initiative to upgrade the municipality’s walking and cycling paths. Construction is under way to add a new section of footpath along Bodmin Court in Truganina, which will close a missing link between existing paths in the area. Work will also begin in coming weeks on a new path along Cheviot Drive in Truganina, to connect existing footpaths. A further 11 upgrades are planned in Werribee over the next two months, which will allow walkers to get to local parks, the Werribee River Trail, public transport and shopping. Mayor Adele Hegedich said the works formed part of the Wyndham Active Transport Strategy. Cr Hegedich said more works would be delivered throughout the remainder of this year and into 2022. “We want to make it easier and safer for Wyndham residents to get from A to B by walking or cycling, and provide better access for wheelchairs, scooters and prams,” she said. MY PLACE Sisters Rebecca Ravenscroft and Kellie Brownrigg are celebrating the 10th birthday of their mortgage broking business, MoneyQuest Werribee, this month. Their mother Wendy also works with them, making it a real family venture. Which suburb do you both live in and what do you like most about the area? We live in Werribee. We love the walking tracks along the Werribee River, the local cafes, and the fantastic new Wyndham Park facilities. We love to grab a coffee and go for walks with the kids, friends, and family – when COVID restrictions allow it.

Are either of you involved in any other local sports or community groups? In pre-COVID times, we both had children playing basketball for St Andrews Basketball Club. Kellie was about to start as a new coach for the under-13 girls’ netball team. All of our club and coaching commitments are now on hold due to COVID-19.

What do you enjoy most about working together, and with your mum? We have a fantastic Yin and Yang dynamic. Our skill sets complement each other. When one person is challenged, the other is able to jump in and help. We have created a fun and loving work environment, and we have a fantastic ability to draw a line between work life and family life. Quite often we will announce: “That’s it, phones off, no more work talk, it’s family time,” and we easily switch over into home life mode. Working with our mum is very special. We call her our “client magic manager” because she writes beautiful handwritten cards to our clients, and organises their settlement gifts, to ensure that their experience with MoneyQuest Werribee is magical.

How did MoneyQuest Werribee get involved sponsoring the VCAL program at Mackillop College and offering a scholarship to a standout student each year? We established a relationship with MacKillop College when we first started taking on work experience students, and hosting a banking information expo for the students each year. These expos are designed to educate students about setting up bank accounts and the importance of a savings structure when entering the workforce. We then asked the school how else we could support the students, and our contact at the school suggested sponsoring the VCAL program. We were more than happy to get involved.

Rebecca, what do you enjoy about being on the Werribee Primary School council? This year is my first on the council. It has given me great insight into how the school is run and how they make big decisions that impact both the teaching staff and the student population. I love that I have been able to bring my business leadership skills to the group and have been able to implement programs to support the teachers during remote learning, in an attempt to boost engagement and staff morale.

What do you find the work experience students enjoy about their two weeks with you? We share our marketing plan with the students and explain how we go about generating leads. We then ask them to put together some Facebook and Instagram posts for us to generate engagement and interaction. Eight months into the year, at a time where we all expected life to be back to some resemblance of normal, with the worst of this pandemic behind and everyone having had their jab. That was before the highly infectious Delta spread to Victoria changing the game – we now need only look to New South Wales to see what underestimating this virus can do. As a result, the impact of lockdowns are now being felt by many who have been lucky to avoid the worst of the pandemic so far. People like my parents in northern New South Wales, right on the border with Queensland, thankful for the example set by Victorians willing to go the hard yards necessary to suppress the virus wherever its ugly head appears. Our community in Wyndham has been on the front line of this crisis from the very beginning, more exposed doing work that needs to be done without, for many, the luxury of being able to work from home. They’re our transport and delivery drivers, aged care and childcare workers, healthcare workers and hospitality workers to name a few – and they’re the people that have kept Victoria moving. Thank you to everyone who has rolled up their sleeves and lined up to get the jab over the past few months – because at the end of the day that is what each and every one of us needs to do to end this crisis.

With a mass supply in the millions of AstraZeneca doses made right here in Melbourne now ready to go and more Pfizer having just arrived, it is a race to get vaccinated as quickly as we can. I joined the thousands of Victorians rolling up their sleeves for my first dose of AstraZeneca as soon as they were made available for under 40’s. Some of my staff, who are all under 30, were even quicker to get in then me, with only one out of the six of us receiving Pfizer, and all of us now having had a least one dose. Every Victorian over the age of 16 is now eligible for a vaccine at state-run vaccination centres. With the welcomed arrival of more Pfizer vaccine to Victoria, anyone aged 16 to 59 is now eligible for either Pfizer or AstraZeneca. Folks over the age of 60 will still continue to receive Astra Zeneca. Remember, the best vaccine is the one available to you today. Both vaccines are safe and effective. The closest state-run vaccination centre for Wyndham is now at Eagle Stadium in Werribee. You can book in for your jab at the indoor vax hub or do it from the comfort of your vehicle as part of the drive-thru site we’ve also set up at Eagle Stadium. You must book your appointment in by visiting coronavirus.vic.gov.au or by phoning the Coronavirus Hotline on 1800 675 398. Not all of us can work from home, but we can all get vaccinated – and getting the vaccine is our way out of this pandemic. Let’s get it done.

Third baby zebra dazzles at zoo What better way to mark the start of the spring season than with the birth of a zebra foal at Werribee Open Range Zoo – the third born on the Savannah this year. Filly, Dajan [pronounced: Da-jarn] – meaning dark sky during heavy rain in Swahili – was born last week during an evening storm to mum, Dafina, and joins half-sisters Zola and Falah. Werribee Open Range Zoo savannah keeper Maddy Jamieson said Dajan is settling into life on the savannah extremely well. “Like any zebra foal, Dajan is staying close by her Mum’s side,” Ms Jamieson said. “She is bright, sprightly and healthy and we’re very happy to see her feeding from mum.” Ms Jamieson said Dajan was initially quite shy, but has begun showing her personality. “She’s really curious and courageous in nature. She’s stepping away from mum ever so slightly to explore her surroundings and inquisitively checking out her keepers during morning feeds. “It’s amazing and really nice to have so many healthy babies out on the savannah, especially with spring now here. It’s bringing a lot of joy to the zoo team and we hope this news will bring joy to everyone at home as well.” Zoos Victoria animal welfare and life sciences senior manager Amanda Embury said the opportunity for Dajan to grow up alongside zebras of a similar age provides increased opportunities for social interactions.

“The foals interacting with one another will help to develop the important skills they need to thrive in a zebra herd, including skills that are vital for breeding success,” Ms Embury said. “Having several foals in the herd increases opportunities for learning – the foals can learn from one another as well as from adults in the group.” Plains zebras are native to Africa and are classified as near-threatened in the wild. Their

population of 250,000 is in decline, with major threats including competing with agriculture, hunting, war and droughts caused by climate change. The zebras at Werribee Open Range Zoo form part of a regional breeding program to maintain a genetically diverse herd that can support conservation of wild zebra populations. Anyone can support zebra conservation through Zoos Victoria’s Beads for Wildlife initiative. Funds raised through the sale of

handmade beadwork via Zoos Victoria’s retail stores go towards protecting the rangelands where zebras reside in Northern Kenya. Zoos Victoria’s three zoos – Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary – are currently closed to members and visitors in line with current COVIDSafe directions. By Alesha Capone Demand for birthing suites at Werribee Mercy Hospital has reached capacity. The hospital welcomed 3833 babies in 2020, slightly lower than the 3888 babies delivered there in 2019. Health services chief executive Jason Payne said Werribee Mercy Hospital’s birthing numbers had remained steady over the past two years because the birthing suites were unable to accommodate any more expectant mums. He said some pregnant women within the Werribee Mercy Hospital catchment are

being forced to use services at public hospitals outside the area. “The demand exists for Werribee Mercy Hospital to deliver more babies locally but this cannot occur without expanded facilities,” Mr Payne said. “It would be preferable that local families had access to more of the best high quality and safe public birthing services at Werribee Mercy Hospital, so they don’t have to travel.” Mr Payne said planning was under way to boost the capacity of the birthing suites. “A third stage of Werribee Mercy Hospital, which is currently in the final stages of planning, will involve the creation of more

birthing suites, additional post-natal beds, and other ante and post-natal facilities, accompanied by additional midwifery and nursing staff. “Based on demand for existing maternity services, it is projected that Werribee Mercy Hospital would be well placed to meet an anticipated increase in demand of up to 30 per cent more babies in the western metro area.” Mr Payne said Mercy Health has been working with the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority and the Department of Health and Human Services since 2016 to prepare for the future needs of Werribee Mercy.

In November’s state budget, $4.8 million was allocated to finalise planning for the third stage of the hospital’s development. “We have acknowledged publicly the funding was a clear sign the voices of the people of the west of Melbourne are being heard and government is committed to meeting a major upgrade,” Mr Payne said. Mercy Health Group chief executive, Adjunct Professor Stephen Cornelissen, said the next stage of Werribee Mercy Hospital’s construction required $300 million in funding “to ensure the people of Wyndham receive the level and quality of health services they deserve and need”.

The timeless art of connecting Residents of Melbourne’s north-west are among those featured in a new book, The Art of Lockdown, revealing how the Ukrainian community used art and culture to connect and maintain wellbeing during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Project co-ordinators Chrestyna Kmetj and Natalia Moravski said the idea grew like wildfire via The Art of Lockdown Facebook group and virtual exhibition, quickly going international. Below, some of our local residents explain the meanings behind their contributions. Irene Karaszkewycz, Doreen I decided to embroider during COVID as it was a way of keeping positive and calm. It also became a period to reflect on the past and engage with the future.

Symon Herczaniwski, Caroline Springs The original idea of the artwork was to have two colours combine in a sort of conflict. The artwork doesn’t have a meaning – people are free to come up with what they think the meaning or inspiration of the artwork is.

Maru Jarockyj, Sunbury The prolonged lockdown brought with it moments of mental anguish, fears for the war in Ukraine, spiritual reflection and psychological agony. The anguish and the agony landed on the canvas in blood red and fiery yellow shapes around an iconic father image: hands pierced with red suffering dripping onto the yellow Ukrainian tridents. Hope extinguishes fear and the yellow cross promises a resurrection, a new era, a new post-COVID renaissance.

To break the monotony of the days during lockdown, I decided to do some art. Christmas always evokes wonderful memories of a carefree childhood, joy, comfort and family unity, so I chose Christmas decorations. When I saw the exhibition, Art of Lockdown, I decided to join it and unite myself with the Ukrainian community in Australia.

I sometimes draw whatever comes into my mind. Sometimes, I don’t know what to draw and then I just sit next to the paper for hours doing nothing. A lion is actually my favourite animal because my name actually has ’lion’ in it (Lev). At the moment we are doing homeschooling. It was a little bit more difficult because there

COVID lockdown in 2020 awarded me the time to focus on creating a quilt that would represent my thoughts of women and the important role they play in society. I have never done any quilting before, so the task seemed daunting. The double wedding ring design is traditionally made by mothers and grandmothers for their children and given as gifts on their wedding day or anniversaries. It is a complex pattern as it has a lot of moving parts and was quite frustrating to assemble. Once this quilt was complete, I felt inspired to keep creating, so by the start of 2021 I had completed eight unique quilts for my family and close friends.

New Peugeot is sporty and stylish

By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Peugeot 2008 GT Sport is a small-medium SUV that leans in the direction of medium. The 2008 designation (which Peugeot prefers to call two-thousand eight rather than two double-oh eight) means that it’s an SUV rather than a tall hatchback. It’s not a GT or a Sport in the true sense of these labels, but it does have slightly firmer suspension and a different steering feel that will appeal to those who like to drive.

Styling The French are seemingly incapable of designing a car that doesn’t look great. The front is large and expansive, the window lines swoop up beautifully as they pass the centre of the rear doors. The wheel arches are large and carry black lips to emphasise that it’s an SUV. There are large scallops in the doors themselves. A black panel all the way across the rear carries large lights, and the roof extends beyond the glass top and sides to give a sort of spoiler look. The door mirrors also get the black treatment and there are GT badges at their rear support them to let the person sitting beside you at a red light know what you’re driving. As we said, Very French, and all we showed our test car liked it.

screen is clear and reasonably easy to use. Our preference is always a vertical screen because you can see much more without the need to scroll, but the Peugeot does work better than most. There’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smart phone mirroring, as well as DAB+ radio and satellite navigation. The wireless charging tray is handy as it saves having cables taking up space in the centre console area.

Interior Classed a five-seater - though we would call it a four-plus-one - rear area is as attractive as the rest of the car. As is the norm in cars of this size those in the front might have to give up some legroom to make better space for tall travellers back there. The boot has a volume of 434 litres with all seats in use, and 1467 litres with the 60:40 rear seats both folded down. However, they don’t fold flat so our dog’s bed couldn’t be used there. There’s a slim out-of-sight area below the floor.

Driving Ahh, the quirky French! The Peugeot digital instrument cluster sits on the top of the dashboard. You look over the top of the small steering wheel to see the instruments. I’m tall and like to sit high in a car so could see the instruments, others who drove it had their vision almost blotted out. There’s just a hint of front-wheel-drive torque steer if you really blast it off the line in a traffic light grand prix. Okay, I’m not as young as I once was, but still enjoy driving like this… There’s a sedate feel in the cabin during

normal driving that almost feels like you’re in a larger car, even a prestige car at times. The French do like their comfort and this shows up beautifully. That’s despite the slightly sporty set up in the suspension. On the open road with twisty bits, it handles nicely and give feedback through the steering wheel. On motorways its smooth and almost silent, bump-thump is felt through some joints in other ones it’s fine. The little1.2-litre engine is willing enough and chats nicely to the eight-speed auto to make sure it’s in the right gear for the time. Peugeot 2008 Sport GT has a five-year/ unlimited-distance warranty. Servicing is required every 12 months or 15,000km, whichever comes first. Under Peugeot’s Service Price Promise, the 2008 GT Sport will cost $2466 for the first five years/75,000km.

United realises W-League dream By Tara Murray For a young club, Western United has some big dreams. About to start its third A-League season, the club has been busy in the background to ensure there is a platform from the ground up for both males and females in the western suburbs. The next stage in the development is on track, with the club to field a W-League side from the 2022-23 season. The club had been vocal about its desire to add a top league women’s side, having formed a partnership with National Premier League Women’s side Calder United, and recently setting up a female development squad. The announcement of United’s W-League side was exactly what Adriana and Melissa Taranto wanted to hear. The twins have been in the Victorian system for a number of years, signing with Melbourne Victory when they were 15. While they have not been part of a W-League club the past couple of years, they said the announcement of a new club in Melbourne’s west was exciting. Both have their sights focused on a spot in United’s inaugural squad. “It is so exciting,” said Adriana. “Especially after the last few years we’ve had with soccer. “In the past two years we’ve played 10 games of soccer due to the lockdown. “It’s so exciting for Victoria and across Australia as it gives so many young girls the opportunity.” Mel added: “It’s good news for everyone”. The duo, who play for Calder United, are both part of Western United’s development squad and say the work the club has done with the squad and Calder United has been amazing. The 22-year-olds believe they are now ready for a real crack at the W-League after struggling a bit while at Melbourne Victory. “We’ve grown up a lot since then,” said Adriana. “We were like deers in the headlights and I admit I don’t think I handled it well. Mel said that experience showed through at the one development squad session they had, where they felt a lot more comfortable than some of the younger girls. Western United’s head of female football, Amanda Stella, said she didn’t imagine that there would be a W-League team in Melbourne’s west so soon. Stella came on board at Western United last year after the club formed a relationship with Calder United, of which she is president. “I thought maybe in the long-term future we would see a side,” she said. “I think it’s because of Western United’s commitment to the female game, females in general, they’ve fast tracked this in our community. “The investment, the publicity and the opportunity they have already given to players

of the west, players of Calder, is amazing and that hasn’t been done before.” Stella said there had been a lot of work done behind the scenes in a short period of time to get the club ready for a W-League side. She said the club had been aiming to have a side for the upcoming season, but in hindsight, with the COVID-19 pandemic, an extra 12 months to get the team ready isn’t a bad thing. “It’s very exciting, it’s been challenging the last few months,” she said. “For Western United, it’s an amazing achievement. It’s a young club and they’ve been very much wanting to get a W-League licence since they started. “We’ve started the development squad, but we only got one session in before we went into lockdown. “The minute we can get that back up and

running we will, that group of girls will hopefully travel a little bit with the A-League team and play some friendlies try and get in some games. “We have a good pool of girls to choose from for our first W-League team.” Stella said United’s aim was to give young players in Melbourne – and particularly in Melbourne’s west – the opportunity to shine at a higher level. She said with limited spots to play W-League in Victoria, many players were leaving to play interstate. “We’re going to start new and we’re going to invest in youth as we know where the long-term success will come from,“ she said. “We’re not going to sign 10 ready-made champions. It’s about home grown talent and I have always argued that they could challenge anyone. “For young girls from the west, there’s a W-league team that will be part of their community.” For the Taranto twins, the next 12 months will be a big. “We will keep working hard and move forward with Calder United with their season first,” they said. “We’ll do what we can for them and get as fit as possible and hopefully get into the W-League squad. “We’re just excited to get out there and play.”

Young shooters selected for national squad Thirteen of Australia’s finest junior shooting athletes, including Werribee South resident Alexis Preston, have been named in the Australian Junior World Championships team. Tokyo Olympic Games competitors Alex Hoberg and Katarina Kowplos, plus 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games representative Tori Rossiter, have also been selected for the team. The team members have met national selection criteria, following a series of nomination events held in the first half of this year. However, following consultation with the federal government and a detailed risk assessment of ongoing risks posed by COVID-19, Shooting Australia has decided that the team will not be attending the Junior World Championships, which are scheduled

to take place in Peru between September 25 and October 10. Despite this, Shooting Australia continued with the selection of the team, so that each member could receive a one-off Junior Development Grant to assist with costs associated with their sport. Shooting Australia chief executive Luke van Kempen said the grants would assist the recipients as they prepare to take part in selection for the 2024 Olympic Games to be held in Paris. “Although the selected Australian team will not travel to Peru for the competition, we wanted to recognise the achievements of the athletes,” Mr van Kempen said. “Our consultation determined that it was appropriate for the 13 athletes to receive financial assistance in the journey towards Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028.”

Mr van Kempen said the decision not to travel to Peru was made in the interest of health and safety. “While it is disappointing these athletes will miss the opportunity to compete at the ISSF (International Shooting Sport Federation) Junior World Championships, the health and welfare of our athletes must come first,” he said. Mr van Kempen said the “COVID bubble” provisions at the Tokyo Olympics was “a far cry from what will be on offer in Peru”. Nevertheless, Mr van Kempen congratulated the 2021 Australian Junior World Championships team. “We hope you can all go on to higher honours and be great role models for other up-and-coming junior athletes in the sport,” he said. Season over for Falcons By Tara Murray City West Falcons’ championship dreams are over after Netball Victoria pulled the pin on the Victorian Netball League season. With uncertainty over when players could return to the court due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the league made the decision to end the season. Netball Victoria at this stage isn’t planning to award premierships or minor premierships, but will announce most valuable player awards and teams of the year. Falcons coach Marg Lind said it was the right decision for the competition. “I think it was a wise decision in the end,” she said. “There was talk about trying to get the finals up and running, but the safety of our players comes first. “I wrote a letter saying I didn’t think it was safe to continue and that killed me to say as we were undefeated [in championship division]. “We would have been putting players in a

situation where they had only trained together twice and played two games in a 10 week period. “You would have needed a pre-season before playing again.” For the Falcons, it’s a case of what might have been, especially in the championship division. After a draw in round one, the Falcons were the standout team of the competition, going through undefeated. Lind said it would be nice to get some recognition for their season, with every team having played each other at least once. “We were sensational,” she said. “We had a number of new players this season. “We were outright on top in the championship division and Blaze [North East Blaze] were outright in division two. “Under-19s was where the issue was with any of the teams from one to 10 that could have won. “It would be nice if we were recognised with something.”

Overall, Lind said she was thrilled with how the season had played out for the club overall. As well as the championship side being undefeated, the division 1 side was fourth and the under-19s equal fourth. “Our under-19s beat three of the top four sides in the last six rounds,” she said. “They are a very young squad, so it’s a good indication for next year. “Division one was fourth. We hit our KPIs [key performance indicators] which is having all three teams in the four.” Lind said the playing group would continue to hold online Zoom fitness sessions for the next few weeks, to keep the group engaged. “Being on Zoom gives our girls something to do, many of them have nothing to do,” she said. “We’ll probably keep that going for another month. “We’ll likely have six weeks off and start looking to selection, hopefully we can go through the selection process. “There’s lots of things to look at and review.”

Champion New Zealand horseman Richard Brosnan has captured some of harness racing’s biggest prizes, but few moments in his long and successful career would top the one that presented in Bendigo, where Saturday night’s racing was moved from Melton. Brosnan and son Emmett landed their first Group 1 as a training combination on Saturday night when Maori Law poked his nose out to win a thrilling Opus Group Australasian Trotting Championship over the marathon 2650m trip. It was a breakthrough elite level triumph for both Emmett and the horse, who has overcome setbacks in recent times to finally secure victory on the biggest stage. “It’s massive,” the Bannockburn-based Emmett said. “It means so much to me. I’m so stoked I can win a Group 1 with my old man as well. “Growing up and watching him do it and (now) I get a chance to do it, it just means everything.” Maori Law, who was having just his seventh start for team Brosnan, has now won 17 races for over $200,000 in prizemoney. There were tears of joy in an emotional post-race interview as husband and wife Greg Sugars and Jess Tubbs celebrated Triple Eight’s VHRC Caduceus Classic success. The usually cool, calm and collected Sugars raised his whip in triumph as the former New Zealander powered to victory in the $100,000 Group 1, and then choked up as he articulated just how special the win was for his family. “We were lucky enough to win our first Group 1 with Momentslikethese earlier this year, which was sort of a bittersweet moment for us because we couldn’t actually be there (in Queensland) to finish the job off for ourselves,“ he said.
