Lockdown extended By Alesha Capone Seven residents living within the 3030 postcode of Point Cook, Werribee and Werribee South have contracted COVID-19 in the past week, as concerns about community transmission prompted the state’s fifth lockdown to be extended. The state government announced yesterday that the lockdown would be extended until midnight on Tuesday, July 27, to help run Victoria’s Delta outbreak “to the ground”. Thirteen new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 were recorded yesterday, bringing the total number of active cases in the state to 85. Eighteen thousand primary close contacts of those cases had been identified, Victoria’s COVID commander Jeroen Weimar said. Fourteen cases have been linked to the MCG, including nine who attended the Carlton-Geelong match on Saturday, July 10. The 3029 postcode, which covers Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina, recorded one case last week. There are no recorded cases in Wyndham’s other postcodes. However, several Wyndham locations have been named as COVID-19 exposure sites. Coles Sanctuary Lakes and Sanctuary Lakes Charcoal Chicken & Salad Bar were identified as tier one sites on July 14, while the Sanctuary Lakes Hotel and QuickFit Health Club in Point Cook were both tier one sites on July 13. The Jamieson Way Community Health Centre public toilets were listed as a tier two site on July 14, after a person with COVID-19 used them. Persist Fitness in Werribee was also named a tier one exposure site on July 12, 13 and 14. Gym owner Josh Pigdon said that it came “out of the blue” when the health department contacted him to say that a person with COVID-19 had attended the gym last week. Mr Pigdon said he and two other trainers had been advised to isolate for 14 days, although they tested negative to the illness. “We’re pretty diligent with all the cleaning, making sure everyone signs in with the QR codes and everything like that,” he said. Mr Pigdon said he sent messages to staff and everyone who had been at the gym to inform them of the development. “You just have to do the right thing,” he said.

Mr Pigdon said he hoped the gym would not be affected too much by the latest lockdown. Announcing the extended lockdown yesterday, Premier Daniel Andrews said there would be no further as-of-right red zone travel for two weeks except for compassionate exemptions and authorised workers. “The trend is good but we need more time to be absolutely certain that all that we’ve given and all that we’ve done has been successful,” he
said. “There’s very little margin for error in this. “Leaving it smouldering, this Delta variant, leaving it with a handful of cases even, really does mean that you almost certainly will have a further outbreak, further lockdowns and potentially finish up in a situation where you’re locked down, not for days, but you’re locked down for months.” The five reasons to leave home will remain
in place: Getting food and supplies, exercising for up to two hours, care or caregiving, work or education if you can’t do it from home, and to get vaccinated at the nearest possible location. Shopping and exercise must be done within five kilometres of your home or the nearest location. ■ More

Property market ‘buoyant’ By Alesha Capone Median house prices in Wyndham rose 8.4 per cent in 2020-21, according to new Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) data. The REIV last week released median house prices for the 2020-21 financial year, which revealed an increase in prices across the state. The median house in metropolitan Melbourne hit $1.01 million, while regional Victoria’s median price reached $559,500 in June. In Wyndham, the median house price for
the entire municipality rose 8.4 per cent to reach $632,500. Wyndham Vale experienced the largest price increase, up 11.6 per cent to reach $532,000. Point Cook and Werribee’s median prices both rose by 7.3 per cent, to reach $730,000 in Point Cook and $585,000 in Werribee. Median house prices in Hoppers Crossing increased by 7.1 per cent to $580,000 and in Williams Landing, by 6.9 per cent to $763,000. Tarneit’s median price grew 6.1 per cent to $605,000 and Manor Lakes’ median grew 4.1 per cent to reach $600,000.
REIV resident Leah Calnan said the metropolitan housing market was holding strong as interest rates remain at record lows. “Winter is typically a relatively low activity period but this year was different – Victorians are out there making property decisions,” she said. Paul Nuske from Professionals Triwest Real Estate in Werribee said the REIV’s comments reflected what was happening in Wyndham. “There is high buyer demand and low stock levels, combined with low interest rates, which are just creating a buoyant market in this area.”
Mr Nuske said properties were selling within two to three weeks of coming on to the market. “We are finding buyer interest in the older, central areas of Werribee and Hoppers Crossing is quite strong, as older homes tend to be bigger,” he said. Investors, first-home buyers local to Wyndham and residents planning to upsize or downsize were among those seeking to buy a new house, Mr Nuske said. He said forecasts earlier this year that the property market might slow down in the latter half of 2021, did not appear true for Wyndham.
Dial zero for heroes Wyndham Vale youngster Pavelpreet Kaur Guliani has been recognised for her bravery and quick-thinking, which her mum says saved her life. Pavelpreet, who was aged eight at the time, was last week announced as a recipient of the Junior Triple Zero Hero award. The annual awards, held by the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA), recognise children for their courage and clear thinking during emergencies. Twenty other young Victorians aged between five and 13 were also named as Junior Triple Zero Heroes last week, after being nominated by the ESTA operators who took theirs calls. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s awards were not presented in a formal ceremony at the MCG, but the young heroes will have their medals mailed to them. Pavelpreet said she was excited to find out she would receive an award.
In July last year, Pavelpreet was doing online school classes when her mother Manpreet arrived home from work. Manpreet did not feel well and went to rest. It was not long before she developed bad stomach pains and was vomiting. Pavelpreet said she came into the room to find her mother “almost unconscious”. She called triple-0 and the operator told her to keep her mum awake and talking, in the 20 minutes or so before paramedics arrived. “I was scared but I had to be brave for her,” Pavelpreet said. Upon arriving in hospital, Manpreet was diagnosed with a particularly severe bout of food poisoning. She said she had barely been able to talk before the ambulance arrived. “She [Pavelpreet] saved my life that day, I was barely conscious,” Manpreet said. Alesha Capone

Wyndham kids have plenty of space to climb and explore, with two new parks opening in the municipality. Property developer Peet Limited has created the parks in its Newhaven Tarneit and Cornerstone Werribee communities. Raffles Walk Park at Cornerstone Werribee, was inspired by the You Yangs Regional Park. The park has large boulders for climbing, a climbing course with ropes, platforms, a lookout tower and a curving slide. Universal Road Park at Newhaven Tarneit, which is set to open in the coming months, will feature a gigantic slide, swings, climbing nets, walls and frames, a shaded picnic area, an open lawn and a forest garden The parks have been designed in conjunction
with a website that reviews playgrounds and cafes in the western suburbs. Peet Limited chief executive and managing director Brendan Gore said that the two new parks would give local families space to enjoy themselves. Tamara Chan, sales manager at home building company Langdon – which recently opened a new display house at Newhaven – said that area’s park would offer families, which did not have a large yard at home, the chance to enjoy the outdoors. Ms Chan said that lately, people building a house often wanted to maximise their land with a larger single or double-storey abode, with living spaces taking precedence over a big garden.
The state government has opened tenders for the construction of 10 new Victorian schools, including three future schools in Wyndham: Lollypop Creek Primary School in Werribee, Riverdale East Primary School in Tarneit and Tarneit Missen House Primary School in Tarneit. Education Minister James Merlino said the government has committed to opening 100 new schools across the state by 2026.

Plates create a custom ride By Alesha Capone Werribee’s Michael Giarrusso is among the thousands of Wyndham residents who can claim to have a number plate as individual as he is. Figures from the Department of Transport (DOT) show that five Wyndham suburbs ranked among the top 10 Victorian areas for customised number plates in the 2020-21 financial year. Craigieburn residents topped the list with 998 customised number plate owners, followed by Tarneit with 918 custom number plate owners. Point Cook placed fourth with 771 custom plate owners, followed by Truganina (693) and Werribee (657). Hoppers Crossing came in at ninth with 501. A DOT spokesperson said the Wyndham municipality “has been a magnet for custom plates”. The department uses funds raised through the purchase of custom plates to maintain and upgrade Victoria’s roads. Mr Giarrusso, a Ford fan, said he purchased his first customised number plate when he turned 18, as many of his older friends already had one. The plate reads “MVG”, representing Mr Giarrusso’s initials. Mr Giarrusso also ordered a number plate for his son Michael, upon his first birthday. The plate spells out Michael’s initials, “MAG” and are affixed to a Flacon GT which is known as “Michael’s car”. Michael, who was named after his grandfather, is now aged 10. “We are in a car club and we show the car, it is a very popular model and it has won many trophies,” Mr Giarrusso.

The car’s dash has also been signed by famous Canadian-Australian racing driver Allan Moffat, a family friend of the Giarrussos. Young Michael, a car enthusiast like his father, enjoys attending V8 races alongside Allan and his dad.
Mr Giarrusso’s other customised number plates include “VIPGTP” and “V8MG”. He said it could be hard to get number plates with the letter “M”, as it is often used on government car plates, and because “MG” is also a popular car model.

Tower residents find new homes By Alesha Capone Almost 200 public housing tenants have moved to the western and northern suburbs under a program to relocate those considered at “greatest risk from coronavirus” due to living in high-density buildings in inner Melbourne. The state government announced the $31.7 million Tower Relocation Program last year, which offers public housing tenants at sites including Flemington the chance to move into a private rental property. The program offered 420 households in Melbourne’s high-rise towers, including residents with a medical condition and large families, the opportunity to move into a privately-leased property in the northern or western suburbs for up to two years before returning to a permanent public housing property. A total of 260 tenants registered interest in the program and 180 people have been matched to a suitable property. Homes Victoria, which manages the state’s social housing system, implemented the relocation program. A Homes Victoria spokesperson said the authority worked with households to match their needs and location preferences with available private rental properties. “Where a match was made, residents were assisted to relocate,” the spokesperson said. “We are continuing to look at other long-term solutions for households where a suitable property on the private market could not be found.” Homes Victoria looked at more than 800 properties in its search for new homes for the tenants. Housing Minister Richard Wynne said the Tower Relocation Program was operating alongside health support for tenants.

“It’s part of our ongoing work to keep high-rise public housing tenants safe and supported during the pandemic,” he said. The Victorian Public Tenants’ Association (VPTA) last year welcomed the announcement
of the Tower Relocation Program, saying it hoped the initiative would improve living conditions for residents. The VPTA said that for “many years” families living in public housing have been “cramped
into very small living quarters around the state, and particularly in the high-rise towers”. “We hope that the Tower Relocation Program will quickly begin to address some of these issues,” the association said.

Call for 24-hour vaccination hub By Alesha Capone Former Wyndham councillor Intaj Khan is calling for a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week COVID-19 vaccination clinic to be established in the municipality. Mr Khan has embarked on a campaign to encourage more residents of the west to get vaccinated, erecting billboards to spread the message. The billboards read: “Stop waiting around! Let’s get the west vaccinated” and “Where is our vaccination hub in Wyndham?” One of the billboards has been erected near Sayers and Leakes roads in Laverton, with another planned for a Sunshine location. Mr Khan said that although a vaccination hub operated by Western Health opened at Wyndham council’s Werribee civic centre earlier this month, it was only open Wednesdays to Fridays from 8.30am to 4pm. Mr Khan said that due to Wyndham’s large population, a continuously-running vaccination hub was needed in the municipality. “It should be open 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week, as many people work,” he said. “I definitely think business leaders and community leaders should encourage people to get vaccinated too.” Mr Khan said the billboards were not part of a political campaign for him to stand for local or state government in the future. “I have not thought about it, that is not something which is important at the moment,” he said. Werribee GP Dr Joe Garra said that opening a 24-hour vaccine hub in Wyndham was a good idea in theory, but would present a logistical challenge in reality. He said there was already a shortage of nurses in hospitals, with many working at vaccination

sites. Dr Garra said government legislation also required large spaces for vaccination hubs, along with carparking spaces and medical freezers to store Pfizer vaccines. “This is why myself and other GPs have used the Encore Events centre to do mass
vaccinations twice, and will again in the future,” he said. A Wyndham council spokesperson said the opening hours of the civic centre vaccination hub “reflect supply of the COVID-19 vaccinations”.
“We continue to monitor community uptake, bookings and the availability of the vaccine,” the spokesperson said. “As eligibility is expanded, and Pfizer becomes more readily available, we plan to extend hours of operation as required.”

Pool closure to be reviewed By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council has voted to review a decision to close the Laverton pool, and will go out to community consultation on the matter. A petition signed by 1123 people had called on council to reconsider its 2019 decision to close the Laverton Swim and Fitness Centre. Originally called Laverton Memorial Swimming Pool, it opened in June 1976 and was dedicated to those who had served in various conflicts in which Australia had been involved. Last week councillors resolved to undertake “a detailed community consultation process as part of the McCormack Park Master Plan to identify the future needs of the community
for this space”. First-term councillor Matt Tyler told the meeting that many people across Laverton were unaware of the prior council’s decision to close the pool and build a water park. “While this is a challenging situation, I’m hopeful that this next step means awareness about the decision made by the prior council continues to increase, and we gain a better understanding of the community’s needs to inform both the McCormack Park Master Plan as well as how best to ensure accessibility to any new aquatic centre,” he said. “Stage one of the consultation will begin soon and I’d really encourage people to
participate and contribute.” Cr Diana Grima, also serving her first term, told the meeting that her family had been among residents who helped establish the pool. “The community raised funds to get this pool to be there,” she said. “It was under [former] Wyndham [council]. “My father, my grandmother, with the community, raised funds for the pool. “Before I was elected, I did not agree that a water park is suitable for the needs of the people who are actually utilising the Laverton swimming pool, including myself for the last 30 years.”

Tarneit author and academic William Abur is hoping that a book he has written will inspire others to help young people. Titled A New Life with Opportunities and Challenges, the book weaves Dr Abur’s own experiences as a refugee, social worker and scholar with those of other people from the South Sudanese-Australian community. Dr Abur, a lecturer at Deakin University, said he spent three years writing the book on weekends and during his spare time. He said the book was born out of a PhD he completed at Victoria University, where he majored in sociology with a particular interest in the settlement of refugees in new countries. Dr Abur is also a member of Wyndham council’s Community Stories program, in which he shares his story with other residents at local events. Dr Abur came to Australia in 2005 at the age of 28, when his birth country South Sudan was in the midst of war. Accompanied by his wife and son, Dr Abur migrated to Australia from a Kenyan refugee camp. “The opportunities in Australia are many: employment opportunities, education, freedom – so much to be thankful for,” he said. Dr Abur said that the challenges of migrating to a new country included unemployment, racism and discrimination in both the workplace and at school. “When you talk about opportunities you also need to talk about the challenges; in the western suburbs of Melbourne, young people are not settling well or perhaps are caught between two different cultures,” he said. Dr Abur, who has worked at a Tarneit secondary college as an African liaison officer, said that empowering young people and building their networks – such as through sport – was a way to help the community. “I loved writing the book as it will provide inspiration to help young people,” he said. “The Australian community is positive and even small acts of kindness can make big changes. “We are all human – we need each other. “Be kind, we need to support each other for our humanity.” Alesha Capone

Call for road maintenance arterial roads. Cr Shaw said although the state government’s recently completed $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade was “very welcome”, more work was needed in Wyndham on issues such as congested intersections, unsealed shoulders and a lack of safe crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists. Cr Shaw said that shoulder maintenance, “pavement failures” and potholes were issues on Duncans Road. Ballan Road, Point Cook Road and Heaths Road were also in need of attention. Cr Susan McIntyre said many Wyndham roads “are of an unacceptable standard”. A state government spokesperson said keeping road users safe was its “number one priority”. Alesha Capone

A place for all occasions A new public outdoor space featuring re-purposed containers, seating and greenery will be constructed in front of the Wyndham Cultural Centre. Wyndham council said work will begin on the project later this month and is expected to be completed in September. The former Raffael’s annex will be demolished to make way for the new space. Mayor Adele Hegedich said once complete, the container space would complement the west end of Watton Street. “This exciting space has been designed as a place for people to meet and catch up while also providing a welcoming entrance to the Wyndham Cultural Centre, Wyndham Art Gallery and Werribee library,” Cr Hegedich said. “Neon lights will also make the space come to life in the evening, creating a fun, playful vibe while supporting Watton Street’s evening economy.” Wyndham creative city portfolio holder, Cr Marcel Mahfoud, said the council was
also working with a local business operator to launch a new 12-month pop-up version of MADE on Watton. The council rented a vacant shopfront in Watton Street earlier this year and transformed it into a market-style site for local artists and designers to showcase their products. Wyndham council has expressed “frustration” with the maintenance of arterial roads across the municipality. The council last week sent a letter to Roads Minister Ben Carroll in response to a notice of motion raised in May by councillor Mia Shaw. The motion requested the council write to the Department of Transport (DOT) seeking an audit of Wyndham’s state arterial roads to assess their performance and condition. It also asked that a letter be sent to Mr Carroll, “outlining the community’s frustration with the current state of maintenance of state road assets and the need for the network to keep pace with the growing and changing needs of Wyndham”. While the council is responsible for some roads in Wyndham, DOT oversees many

A 150-room Holiday Inn, which is part of a 12-storey development at the corner of Synnot Street and Duncans Road in Werribee, opened its door last week. The InterContinental Hotels Group opened the Holiday Inn Werribee on Friday, July 16. The hotel features the Rosana Bistro and Bar, which is located on the building’s top floor and has floor-to-ceiling views of Werribee and towards Melbourne’s CBD. A new multi-storey car park will open at the site on August 2, offering 167 undercover spaces with free three-hour parking. Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said the Holiday Inn was the anchor tenant in the
12-storey Hunter development, which has transformed the former carpark it was located upon into “a premium development” including almost 4000 square metres of office space, along with ground-level retail and hospitality space. “This building will deliver more employment, boost liveability and tourism to the area, increase car parking, and strengthen the local economy,” Cr Hegedich said. “Given that Victorians have been encouraged to explore their own backyard and take staycations because of the pandemic, it’s important that Werribee’s city centre has quality accommodation for people to stay in.”
Cr Hegedich said the council’s Social and Economic Inclusion team worked closely with the Holiday Inn to recruit local employees. “The completion of this mammoth project complements our recent $13 million Wyndham Park redevelopment and the transformation of the Bridge Hotel into a fresh, exciting and contemporary venue,” she said. The Werribee site is the first Holiday Inn in Australasia to feature an “open lobby“ concept which combines a reception area, business centre, restaurant, bar and lounge into one space, which is located on the eighth floor of the building. Premier Daniel Andrews was given a tour of The Grange P-12 College’s new sports science hub last week. The facilities were built as part of a $9.5 million investment, funded in the 2019 Victorian budget, to transform existing classrooms and facilities. At the Hoppers Crossing college there has been a major upgrade to the science block, including sports science learning spaces and science specialist areas. Construction is well under way, with major works completed on the learning facilities and a newly-refurbished rugby pitch at the college. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly, who joined Mr Andrews on the tour, said: “Our $9.5 million upgrade at The Grange P-12 College already has students kicking goals in the classroom and on the rugby pitch.” College principal David Smillie said it was great to see Mr Andrews and Ms Connolly visit the school. “I know that Premier Andrews has a keen interest in our sports program and is always focused on supporting improvements in facilities and student learning outcomes,” Mr Smillie said. “It was terrific to see students genuinely warm to the premier and without prompting sincerity thank the premier’s government for providing funding for our competition-quality rugby pitch.” Alesha Capone

Stockland’s new plans for Tarneit By Alesha Capone An 84-hectare site on Sewell Road, Tarneit will be home to about 800 new residences. Developer Stockland recently announced it had purchased the site, which includes Wyndham council heritage-listed ruins of a bluestone house, a weatherboard house and attached smithery, from Wattle Park Tarneit Pty Ltd for $82 million. The Wattle Park site is approved for development under the Victorian Planning Authority’s Riverdale Precinct Structure Plan. A council study found that prior to 1900, the site was leased as a farm by a man named Donald Sewell. At the time, the land was owned by the Chirnsides, the family who built Werribee Mansion and Point Cook Homestead. Stockland said that, in consultation with Wyndham council, it would “consider a range of options” for the heritage precinct. Stockland’s general manager of residential for Victoria, Mike Davis, said about 26 hectares of land at the Wattle Park estate would be set aside as a “conservation space”. Mr Davis said Stockland planned to commence development, marketing and sales of Wattle Park following settlement of its purchase, once the necessary planning permits were granted. Initial site works are expected to start next year. “This acquisition builds on our significant portfolio of popular communities in Melbourne’s west including Mount Atkinson and Grandview in Truganina, which are now home to more than 1300 residents,” Mr Davis said. Bid to form support group
By Alesha Capone Point Cook’s Phebe Yeo has cut off and donated her long hair to a charitable program that makes wigs for young people with medical conditions such as cancer and alopecia. Ms Yeo said she was inspired to donate her locks to Hair with Heart, which is run by Variety – the Children’s Charity, after her friend Florence did so. Ms Yeo said that after she commented upon Florence’s “lovely” long hair in April last year, her friend mentioned she and her daughter were both growing out their tresses to donate to Hair with Heart. Prerequisites for the hair donated to the program include that it has never been dyed or permed and must measure at least 36 centimetres in length. Upon deciding to grow her hair, Ms Yeo said did not realise it would take her 18 months to achieve the required length. “I didn’t have the courage to cut my hair very short, I’m already past 50,” Ms Yeo said. She said she has only had short hair twice before, first at about age 13 and then at 26 while she was pregnant. “Pretty much my whole life I have had long hair, but I thought, why not do something nice for someone else?” Ms Yeo said. She said that her daughters helped her to plait her hair before she had it cut off. “I think I was very calm, hearing the scissors snipping so near to my ears was the only part where I went, ‘Oh my’,” she said. A Wyndham man is looking for expressions of interest to start a Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) support group in Manor Lakes and surrounding areas. Paul Bryant said he was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, a chronic disorder for which there is no cure, in September 2020. He said the illness was characterised by widespread pain, stiffness, extreme fatigue and “Fibro Fog“, which causes difficulties with memory and concentration. “It has had a debilitating impact on my quality of life, my ability to work, and to keep up with the demands of being a parent,” he said. “When I was first diagnosed I thought the treatment options would be relatively straight forward but due to the complex and unpredictable nature of the condition it has been incredibly difficult getting good quality medical treatment.” Mr Bryant said he searched for a local support group for people with the condition and was unable to find a face-to-face group in the west. So he decided to establish a support group, which carers of people with Fibromyalgia and CFS will also be welcome to attend. Family plea for musician The family and friends of 24-year-old Point Cook man Eimable Manirakiza, who went missing about a month ago, have appealed for community help to find him. Eimable, a soul singer and musician, was last seen about 1.30pm on June 23 at Gordon O’Keeffe Reserve in Werribee. Police and relatives have concerns for Eimable’s welfare as his disappearance is out of character and he has a medical condition. Eimable is described as being about 170 centimetres tall, of thin build and has a black beard and black hair.

Eimable’s loved ones have been co-ordinating a search since he disappeared, raising awareness online as well as through a poster campaign. Eimable’s mother Benigne said she was “really worried” about her son’s welfare and his mental health condition. “My family and friends are doing their best to search for my son, but we have not seen him anywhere,” she said. “We urge you to help us. Whoever sees my son, please contact us and bring him back. “We have suffered a lot, we have been through a lot. “We need the community to be involved. “We need many people to be searching for him.” A statement issued by Eimable’s family and

Project boosts local jobs Construction has commenced on a fourth apartment building in Williams Landing. Developer Cedar Woods recently announced that once complete, the five-storey building on Overton Road will include 69 apartments, a gym and a communal rooftop recreation area for residents. Figurehead Construction has been appointed as the builder for the Lincoln Apartments project, which was designed by DKO Architecture. Cedar Woods development director Callum Knight joined Figurehead managing director Joe Grasso on-site for the project’s official sod-turning just before the latest Victorian COVID-19 lockdown began. “Our Lincoln project has started construction at an exciting time as we continue to create local jobs and support the construction industry,” Mr Knight said. Construction of the Lincoln Apartments is slated to finish in mid-2022. Cedar Woods has also launched another series of boutique apartments on the fringes of the Williams Landing town centre on Woodbury Street. Forty per cent of the first lot of 19 boutique apartments, named Bennett’s Row, sold within the first week of being on the market. A third Williams Landing development, Hewitt Apartments, is expected to launch within coming weeks.

Youth role model lauded By Alesha Capone Teenager Tanya Ajit has been recognised by Wyndham council for making a difference in the community through her volunteer work. Tanya, 16, is the recipient of the One Wyndham award for July, which recognises residents aged between 12 and 25 who positively contribute to the area. Mayor Adele Hegedich said Tanya “is a great representative for Wyndham and is an inspiring role model for students”. Tanya, who is in year 11 at Werribee Secondary College, is the school’s positive climate for learning vice-captain. She also volunteers at the Werribee Salvation Army during school holidays. “It’s such a beautiful place to be, you get to help people and hear about their life,” she said. As well, Tanya is PR officer for the My Piggy Bank! website which provides young people with tools to help develop their financial literacy. She said she became involved in the website after an American girl named Rebecca Wu, who developed the initiative, put a call for volunteers online. “When you go to high school, you don’t really learn real-life money-handling skills,” Tanya said. She said website helps youth with one-on-one tutoring and games, so that the transition to dealing with money as an adult was not so intimidating. Tanya said her involvement with the website inspired her to start a blog called My Mind Remedy, focused on lifestyle, ethics and travel. “I want to make it relatable so people feel like they’re not alone in the world,” she said. School sites purchased The state government has purchased land for three new primary schools in Wyndham. Education Minister James Merlino said the government has brought land at Holyoake Parade in Manor Lakes, Shipwright Parade in Werribee and close to Polly Parade, Tarneit for the future schools, which are all set to open in 2023. The Manor Lakes school will have space for 650 pupils and the Werribee school will have space for 525 pupils. The Tarneit school will accommodate 525 pupils, with a co-located campus offering 50 places for pupils with disability. Werribee MP Tim Pallas and Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly both welcomed Mr Merlino’s announcement. “I’m excited that the community’s vision for a new primary school in Tarneit is turning into a reality, and that students will get to attend a brand-new school with first-rate facilities,” Ms Connolly said. The state government declined to release the details of how much it paid for each new school site. However, the 2021-22 state budget provided $491.565 million for the construction of 13 new schools in Victoria and $276.4 million to purchase land for 14 future schools to meet growing population needs. Youth among most disadvantaged By Alesha Capone A statistical snapshot of Wyndham has found the municipality ranks among the highest in the state for some categories of youth disadvantage. The Public Health Information Development Unit (PHIDU) at Torrens University recently released an online population health atlas for towns and suburbs across the nation, with data from 2016 onwards. PHIDU director Professor John Glover said there were “some areas of concern, reflecting poorer outcomes now and
across the life cycle” in Wyndham. This included that 21.6 per cent of children (13,796 in total) in Wyndham are living in low-income, welfare-dependent families. “Wyndham has the third-highest number in terms of children in this group among local government areas around Melbourne,” Professor Glover said. Tarneit had the lowest percentage of kindergarten enrolment in all of Wyndham at 49.7 per cent, and Hoppers Crossing south and Werribee South the highest, 62.7 per cent. Professor Glover said 4.2 per cent of children
aged 15 and below in Wyndham lived in dwellings where the internet was not accessed– the sixth-largest percentage in Melbourne. Family partnerships co-ordinator for The Smith Family in Werribee, Natalie Triffitt, said that a lack of access to digital devices and the internet was “a huge challenge for many of the families we work with”. “Around one in five of the students who receive support through our Learning for Life program don’t have a laptop or device at home with reliable internet access, which impacts on their ability to do online homework, as well as
schoolwork during COVID-19 lockdowns,” she said. The Learning for Life program supports long-term education by linking students with community sponsors who help The Smith Family provide the support they need to stay in school and go on to further studies or a job. “We’ve seen a rise in requests for assistance since the pandemic began and The Smith Family remains concerned with the number of students and families we support who are struggling, some more than at any stage since the first outbreak,” she said.
Dhruv makes his move Point Cook youngster Dhruv is a champion chess player. Dhruv placed second in the under-10s category of the 2021 Victorian Junior Chess Championship, which took place over two days earlier this month. Dhruv said he played four games on the first day of the competition and three games on the second day, with some of the matches lasting about one hour. He received a trophy, a cash prize and a book voucher for coming second. “I wasn’t expecting it, it was really difficult so I didn’t see myself placing in the top five,” Dhruv said. The young chess enthusiast said his father taught him to play the game at the age of five. Dhruv said he loved it so much that he started private classes with coach Phil Minichelli from the Wyndham Chess Club. He now plays regularly with the chess
club including at meetings, challenges and tournaments. “What I enjoy most is the thinking and strategy,” Dhruv said. Dhruv also represents Alamanda College, where he is a grade five pupil, in interschool chess tournaments. He said the Alamanda chess team usually placed in the top three at most events. Dhruv said that he would like to become a professional chess player in the future. “I just want to play chess and if possible, be the greatest chess player of all time, or one of the best players of all time,” he said. MY WYNDHAM Kim Carter is secretary of the Werribee Business and Tourism Association (WBTA). She chats with Alesha Capone. Can you tell me a bit about yourself? I moved to Werribee at the start of my high school years, attending Werribee High (Werribee Secondary College now). The population of Werribee was around 12,000 people and to become a ‘local’ you needed to have lived in the area for a minimum of 25 years. Well, I guess I am a local now, as I am still living in the area and definitely for more than 25 years. I started my working career quite young, delivering pamphlets in my local area and worked at Coles, while still at school, before I headed into the corporate life. I love animals, especially dogs and horses and I love being out in nature. I also have a love of fine wine and food. So living in Werribee I get the best of both worlds.
How long have you been involved in the WBTA? I have been a member of the WBTA for three years and on the board for almost two years. The WBTA is always looking at ways to support members. There are so many varied businesses in Werribee and Wyndham. The current focus is on ‘Going Local’, how we can showcase our members and support them. You started on the WBTA board just before COVID-19? My first year on the WBTA board started

What else do you like about Werribee? I live in central Werribee. I love the location and view Werribee as my extended backyard. I have the Werribee town centre almost at my front door, where I am spoilt for choice. Everything from dining, entertainment, retail and many small businesses. I love watching the local footy and going to the Werribee races. Also it only takes a few minutes to be back in nature, with the many walking trails along the Werribee River, Werribee South and the off-leash dog parks – my dogs love to run and explore. off in full swing with our amazing bushfire fundraising event on January 16, 2020. Little did we know that COVID-19 was just around the corner and a time of uncertainty for all of us. Not knowing what was going to happen next, what support was available and even if our businesses would survive the many lockdowns Victoria went through – and is still going through. The WBTA board are also business owners. Some made the hard decision to leave WBTA so they could focus on their business. The WBTA needed someone to keep things ticking along, to apply for grants, come up with
new ideas and provide what support we could for members. I was in a position to take this on. I wanted to be there for our local businesses and community, even if it was in a small way. What is coming up on the WBTA agenda? We have recently launched our updated website and ran a #golocalwerribee campaign. We have plans to run this again via different media channels to keep spreading the news on how wonderful and diverse Werribee is. Our extended backyard is amazing to visit and our selection of businesses, well they have you covered. Spending local keeps our businesses
open. With COVID-19 still knocking at our door, events can be challenging. Our next general meeting is being held at the new Holiday Inn and the WBTA are working with Vibrant City Centres (at Wyndham council) on the Winter Street Party – Werribee city centre event that is scheduled for Friday, August 27. Come and support your local businesses while we say farewell to winter and hello to spring. Would you like to add anything else? A voice for young people A podcast started during the COVID-19 pandemic to help give a voice to young people in Melbourne’s west continues to go from strength to strength. Tara Murray catches up with creators, Michael Lim and Julia Truong to find out more about Collective West, the inspiration behind the podcast and what to expect in the second season.
“W
hat we saw from the first and second lockdown was the disproportionate impact that the lockdown had not only on Melbourne’s west, but in Brimbank,” Michael Lim recalls. “We saw how much it was affecting young people.” Keen to find some way for young people to approach the pandemic in a different light, the 2018 Brimbank young citizen of the year started thinking about what he could do to make a difference. Lim wanted to help young people who had lost their jobs and were experiencing mental health problems to connect with others. When he decided to start a podcast, he reached out to his good friend Julia Truong, a fellow Brimbank resident, and got the conversation going. “We saw the disproportionate impact that this was having on the west and the clear connection between having low education and payment with work,” he said.

“I think it was anger and injustice. Because we couldn’t be there face-to-face and we couldn’t have gatherings, or even talk to people, we wanted to create a platform where we could be a voice for young people. “Being young people ourselves, we thought about interviewing thought leaders or community leaders from across the west that may not have a platform or speak to other young people. “We thought how can they turn this challenge into an opportunity? We wanted to create a really positive social impact across the west.” Truong jumped at the opportunity to work with Lim on the project. She said Collective West started as two good friends sharing some insights and grew from there. “It’s really exciting how it has evolved over time,” she said. “The people we’ve managed to interview so far have been very fascinating. Looking back, if I was younger… I would have found it to be helpful. “As positive role models in our community, we wanted to create a platform for young people by young people, and help break down that cycle of disadvantage.” The podcast started with the pair talking about their experiences. Since then, their guests have included Brimbank deputy mayor Jasmine Nguyen, former Western Chances chief executive Rhyll Dorrington and Reana Cazar, a senior associate at a social impact firm that works in Melbourne’s west. Both Lim and Truong admitted they were surprised by the impact that the podcast series had on local people. “Part of me thought it might not work out and people might not be receptive to it, but the majority of the feedback we are getting is people who are appreciative of other young people, community leaders, a platform and the listeners getting so much value from it,” Lim said. “They get so much value out of hearing these Julia Truong and Michael Lim on their podcast, and in Brimbank (right). Kia Niro, neat and sweet By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Kia is getting very serious about the future of electrical power in all of its vehicles. It offers its small-medium Niro SUV in full electric, plug-in hybrid and basic hybrid format. Prices range from $65,990 for the full electric Sport all the way down to $39,990 for the basic Hybrid S. We have tested all three in recent weeks, unfortunately COVID-19 severely restricted our movements so we will concentrate on the hybrid in this review as it’s likely to be the biggest seller. When things settle down, we may be able to test the others and do full reviews on them.
Styling Kia Niro has a neat shape that works well. There is, of course, the Tiger Nose grille, which in EV format isn’t really a grille, but rather a series of dimples. We aren’t sure we like it, but we’ll leave you to come up with your own thoughts. The Hybrid and PHEV do have a large grille that melds nicely with the headlights and the openings in the lower bumper. The sides have full length indentations on the doors, the rear is squared off nicely to maximise load carrying rather than to give a sleek tail. The slim D-pillars make for good sighting when reversing into a parking spot.
Interior Fit and finish is to a high quality and the materials look to be from a car in the next price range up. There’s good space in the cabin thanks to the squared off shape and good leg and knee room in the front seats. The rear is set up for three but, as is usually the case, the centre seat is best left to a slim person. Three children works fine. The widescreen digital instrument cluster sits inside a tall binnacle which is very much in the traditional manner – we like that. 24 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 21 July, 2021
Powertrain Kia Niro Hybrid has a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 64kWh electric motor. It drives the front wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Safety All models have seven airbags, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, radar cruise control, tyre pressure monitors, rear camera and parking sensors. It has not been rated by ANCAP at this time.
Driving Niro’s suspension is set up for Europe, where it has been on sale for several years. Australian drivers tend to lean in the direction of Europeans rather than Koreans or Americans so it’s likely to suit most drivers here. Tell your car salesman that you want to take it for a decent test drive to see if it fills your needs. The steering was rather lighter than we like but feedback is good. It turns in well and follows the direction of the bends without any real need for correction. Braking to charge the battery can be adjusted via the paddle shifters on the steering wheel. We like to put as much energy back into the battery as possible so we let the car do most of the braking. It can’t quite be driven as a one pedal car, but comes close to it. Ride comfort is good and the car is generally very quiet. Some rough roads (sealed, not dirt) bounce it more than we like, but that’s all part of the endless comfort/handling compromise.
Summing up Kia Niro Hybrid is an impressive car at a realistic price. It does its bit to save the planet and we like that. Frankly we would rather buy the Hybrid rather than the Niro full electric as it costs far less - sorry about that planet…

SPORT Wyndham’s Tokyo Olympic connection Champion sports stars with links to Wyndham are set to represent Australia at the Tokyo Olympics, which will start on Friday. Among them is Amy Cashin, 26, who will compete in the 3000-metre women’s steeplechase. This year marks the first Olympics for Cashin, who grew up in Werribee and competed with Western Athletics. She moved to the United States to study at West Virginia University, where she now coaches and is working towards her PhD in coaching and teaching studies. “I’m giddy with excitement to officially be
able to represent Australia and all those who have supported me over the years,” Cashin said last week. “It is validating to know that the hard work over the years and the choices I had to make regarding COVID, and not going home for two years have paid off.” Morgan Mitchell, another 26 year-old who grew up in Werribee and competed with Western Athletics, will this year take part in her second Olympics. She will run in the 800-metre women’s race, after representing Australia at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the 400-metres and 4x400 metre
relay. A former student of Thomas Carr College in Tarneit, Dante Exum, is also headed to Tokyo as a member of the Australian men’s basketball team. Exum, 26, has played basketball in the United States since 2014 for teams including Utah Jazz, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Houston Rockets. Local stars US-bound By Alesha Capone Four young Wyndham athletes are set to take their talents overseas after being selected to play college basketball in the United States. Aaron Dolny, Kane Hynes, Makur Jongkuch and Kobe Pearson have all been part of Wyndham’s Big V Senior Championship collective this year. Hynes and Dolny have both signed to Umpqua Community College in Oregon, Jongkuch to Navarro College in Texas and Pearson to Cuesta College in California. Dolny, 18, and Hynes, 19, are set to fly out in September. Hynes, a Hoppers Crossing resident, said he was “ecstatic” and “very grateful” to be heading to the US. “It’s one step closer to my ultimate goal of playing professionally, I definitely want to play in the NBL,” he said. “It truly feels like a blessing and something I can do to make my club, family and friends proud. “I would like to thank all my coaches and everyone who gave me the opportunity to play
at a national tournament in Queensland.” Hynes said playing basketball was “almost like therapy” and allowed him to focus his mind on just one thing while on the court. “It’s great to be in competition with friends, it’s a great environment to be around, especially at Wyndham,” he said. His fellow future Umpqua student, Dolny said it was “a really good surprise” to find out that he had been accepted to the college. “It’s definitely super exciting to have an opportunity to learn at a college level and be around guys who want to improve every day, it will definitely be a challenge and I’m looking forward to it,” Dolny said. “I’m definitely trying to reach as high as I possibly can, I don’t want to settle for anything less than the NBA. “I’ve been working towards it for a long time and I’m willing to do anything to reach my goal, I’ve put in a lot of hard work.” Dolny played his junior career with Wyndham and transitioned from the Youth League into the Champion division this season. His advice for other aspiring young basketball
players was to focus on their own skills. “I would say to them to not get too worked up for the teams you’re playing for or what level you’re playing at, if you’re willing to put in the work you will get there,” he said. Like Hynes, Jongkuch – a Tarneit resident – began his junior basketball career at Wyndham. Jongkuch, 19, said that he took up the sport about the age of 13, playing with his cousins and other family members. “My goal is to play professionally at the highest level,” he said. Jongkuch said he did not have a particular “dream team” in mind to play with as a professional in the future. “I love basketball and I’m happy to play anywhere,” he said. Jongkuch said he was keen to start training and studying at Navarro College. “I’m looking forward to just developing my body, preparing myself for the next step and getting closer to the next step,” he said. His advice for young people hoping to play college basketball in the US is simple. “Stick to the plan and keep working hard,” he said.
City West Falcons came out switched on and ready to go in their Victorian Netball League championship clash with North East Blaze. Playing in the first round since the competition split into two pools, the Falcons put in one of their best performances of the season on Wednesday night in the 80-60 win. Falcons coach Marg Lind said the final result and margin was a bit of a surprise. Lind has worked with many of the Blaze players and was wary of the talented young player they have. “We were pretty much on fire,” she said. “We had good flow and speed and we were looking physically strong and in good shape. “Last time they played us they had a bit more speed, they lacked that this time round. “The question is whether we can now continue that momentum.” Lind said they had some good performances across the court. She said Montana Holmes continued to impress in the midcourt. “Montana has brought a really good vibe to the side and is a really positive addition to the side,” Lind said. “When you get a new player in it can swing the vibe one way or the other. She has really swung the vibe in the right direction.” Lind said the three goalers did well, with an ill Maddy Gray switching in goal attack with Tee Salanoa. She said Jane Cook showed some good leadership in the circle with her voice and work with the other two goalers. Maggie Lind also had a good game, coming off playing with Collingwood in the Super Netball competition at the weekend. Maggie Lind, in her second game for the Magpies, started at wing attack, in the absence of Kelsey Browne. The Falcons are due to face the Hawks this week. Lind said with the structure confirmed for the season, they now needed to stay focused and have some fun out there. “We’ve got nothing to lose,” she said. “If we can get there [a premiership] it will be good, if not we had fun playing.” Tara Murray

Werribee builds on community connections By Tara Murray Werribee Football Club’s partnership with Reclink Australia continues to thrive. The two organisations joined forces a couple of years ago, to use the power of sport to help give opportunities to people who may not otherwise get them. The partnership has built connections on and off the field, including a recently held football clinic run by Werribee players and coaches. Werribee’s community manager Hamish MacInnes said the partnership had a positive impact on those at the club. Reclink Australia is an organisation that runs sporting programs for people of all abilities, genders, ages and cultural backgrounds who have experienced or are experiencing disadvantage. The partnership with Werribee helps further those opportunities.
“The relationship gives people at the club a sense of doing something in the community,” MacInnes said. “The important thing is, it involves people of all walks of life and ages. People who have gone through tough things, people with mental and physical disabilities and people who have gone through drug and alcohol recovery. “The power of sport allows us to provide opportunities for all walks of life. In the sports industry, it helps us shine a light outside the wins and losses, which sport can be too heavily focused on.” The club recently hosted its first development day with Reclink. The day brought together players from all 18 Reclink teams. WynBay Bulldogs is the only Wyndham team in the competition. Players, senior coach Michael Barlow and SEDA [Sports Education Development Australia] college students who are at the
club took charge of the day. More than 80 people participated in the day with attendees engaging in football-related drills and activities as well as being shown the Werribee facilities. Werribee handed out footballs and donated football boots to help the Reclink teams with much-needed equipment and gear. Reclink founder and director Peter Cullen said on the Werribee Football Club website, the occasion was significant in the lives of many of its participants. “Many of the people here today are suffering from drug and alcohol addiction and are coming from stints in rehab and from isolation into a community setting, so it’s a very powerful thing. “A lot of them are trying to pick up the tools of the sport and all the things that sport teaches us to go forward and take into our lives, and we really welcome and love
the fact that we’ve been hosted by Werribee FC players and staff.” MacInnes said the aim was to continue to have these days and look to have the Reclink organisation involved on Victorian Football League game days. “Looking forward, we want to host some Reclink competition games to run alongside our home games. “There’s still a few hoops to go through. We might even one day have a Reclink footy team based out of Avalon Airport.” MacInnes said they would look to strengthen the partnership in coming years. He said what they had planned next was a little uncertain due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s something the club really looks highly on and something we get a lot out of,” he said of the partnership. “We’re improving people’s lives and making it better through sport.”
