Grease lightning Grease is the word at Keilor Downs College. Students will channel Sandy, Danny, Rizzo and Kenickie as the school puts on a production of the movie Grease. The production is more than 12 months in the making, with the show postponed last year due to COVID-19. Musical director Cat Adey said the students were excited to finally be putting on the show. She said they’ve had to look outside the box with some elements of the show due to pandemic restrictions. “It’s fun and something that people know,” she said of the show. “We’ve sold most of the tickets already, with so many parts and a chorus of dancers.” Ms Adey said there are about 50 students in the show. Ms Adey said the topics covered during the production had opened up different conversations between the students. Lockdown waiting game By Tara Murray Victorians are bracing for the state’s fifth COVID-19 lockdown to be extended, after 13 cases were announced on Monday morning. Victorians were plunged into lockdown at 11.59pm last Thursday, following a number of positive cases across the state as a result of two virus incursions from Sydney. The health department said all of Monday’s cases are linked to known outbreaks. There were 81 active cases of COVID-19 in Victoria as of Monday, while the number of

exposure sites swelled to 278 locations across the state, prompting fears lockdown would be extended. The health department has identified four exposure sites in Brimbank. The department listed Calder Park BP outbound, McDonald’s Delahey and The Helping Hands Mission op shop in Sunshine as tier one exposure sites. Anyone who visited Calder Park BP outbound on July 11 between 11.30am and 1pm, Helping Hands Mission on July 12 between 10.30am and 12.30pm or McDonald’s

Delahey between 10pm on July 13 and 6.30am on July 14 or 11pm on July 15 and 2.30am on July 16 must get tested and isolate for 14 days. Aldi Keilor Central has been identified as a tier two site on July 14 between 5.30pm and 6.40pm. Anyone who visited the store during that time must get tested and isolate until they receive a negative result. In a statement on social media, Keilor Central said the Aldi store had been deep cleaned. “We also continue to be vigilant throughout the centre with regards to cleaning and sanitation protocols with all high touch areas

cleaned and sanitised at regular intervals,” the statement said. Meanwhile, St Albans Meadows Primary School is undergoing ongoing contract tracing after a positive case was linked to the school. A Western Public Health Unit letter, published on the school’s social media, said staff members who had direct contact with the case must get tested and isolate for 14 days. Any pupils who purchased or collected food from the school canteen at recess or lunch time, must get tested and isolate until they receive a negative result.

VCAT decisions leave residents feeling defeated A group of St Albans residents have been left feeling deflated and defeated following the latest in a run of Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) decisions going against them. In April, VCAT approved an application for nine townhouses to be built in Walter Street, St Albans, despite the objections of residents. Brimbank council supported the residents’ views and had knocked back the application. Resident Jenny Isa said the residents had given up their fight against what they called “overdevelopment of the area”. “This one is 150 metres around the corner from my house,” she said. “There was one in Helen Street that was overturned and another

one in Power Street. [VCAT] overturned three in the vicinity of 200 to 300 metres. “There are a lot of elderly people and CALD [culturally and linguistically diverse] people who live in this area. They feel like they are being ambushed in their own streets.” The Helen and Power streets applications were for four double-storey dwellings. Residents objected to them because of traffic and parking concerns and because they felt they were an overdevelopment of the sites. Brimbank council city development director Kelvin Walsh said the Walter Street application was refused on seven grounds including concerns that the proposal was an

overdevelopment of the site. VCAT found that the proposal was acceptable in terms of the neighbourhood character and the amenity impacts on the adjoining properties, and was in line with the type of development to be expected within a residential growth zone. “It cannot be correct to say that because the level of development is more intense than what surrounds the site or that the form of the development is different leads to a conclusion that it is inappropriate,” the VCAT decision said. St Albans resident Joseph Piscopo was one of the Walter Street objectors and spoke at the VCAT hearing. Mr Piscopo said the

Australia’s oldest COVID-19 survivor on Tuesday celebrated her 100th birthday, albeit in lockdown. Carmen Machuca was the first resident to become infected in the May/June virus outbreak at Maidstone’s Arcare Aged Care home. The second was her close friend in the next room, Jesus Guisande, aged 90. The two had lived together since arriving in Australia in the 1960s, along with Mrs Machuca’s late husband, Joseph. Mrs Machuca and Mr Guisande moved from Sydenham into the home together.

Both had received their first Pfizer jab before falling ill and both have made a full recovery. Mrs Machuca was born in the Philippines and is of Spanish background. She has one daughter, Victoria; three grandchildren, Nicole, Sam and Bryce; and two great-grandchildren Alexander and Leonardo. Nicole Gualtiera said her grandmother was only recently discharged from Northern Hospital after weeks of treatment. “It was so random because she was one of the only residents that got it,” Ms Gualtiera said. “So, they just took her into the hospital and she was there for quite a while, up until a couple of weeks ago. “It did take her a long time to fight the virus. “Her body is quite old and she does have a lot of problems … it probably took her a lot longer than most. “The hospital was really good to her. “She was able to fight through it. “We’ve got a photo of her when she was released from the hospital and she looked really

happy. “She actually looked better than before COVID.” Ms Gualtiera said the hardest thing for her grandmother during the lockdowns had been

Half the backyard will be overshadowed. “I’ve got a satellite for Foxtel and I don’t know if that will have to be moved. “It’s really depressing. I have osteoarthritis and this is affecting my health mentally and physically.” Mr Walsh said the only way to appeal a VCAT decision is to the Supreme Court on a question of law and that the council was not intending to do that.

Asbestos found on school oval A Fraser Rise school principal says the school is safe despite asbestos containing material being found at the school last month. Parents and students at Springside West Secondary College were informed just before the school holidays that asbestos containing material had been found on the school oval. In a letter to parents, seen by Star Weekly, principal John Goodman said the oval would remain fenced off until the appropriate soil remediation activities are completed. “I’m writing to inform you of recent soil testing undertaken on the school oval which has identified asbestos containing material,” the letter said. “I want to assure you that our school is safe. The health and safety of our school community is paramount, and we are working with the Victorian School Building Authority and independent occupational hygienists to appropriately manage the situation. “The results of the testing indicate that non-friable asbestos has been identified in the subsurface of the oval. Non-friable asbestos is hard bonded together and will not easily crumble or be turned into powder. It is less of a risk than friable asbestos. “I would like to assure you that the safety of all students, staff and the wider community remains the highest priority throughout this process.” Tara Murray

Together with our community, Council have been strong and vocal advocates for the new Melton hospital for many years and I’m absolutely thrilled that the preferred site was announced by the Victorian Government this month.

Melton hospital a step closer

We’re investing $70.27 million in local roads across the City of Melton as part of the 2021-2022 council budget. These extensive works will include traffic lights at a number of key intersections in Caroline Springs and Plumpton to improve the flow of local traffic.

A new Melton hospital is another step closer, with the Victorian Government announcing the preferred site.

The announcement of the Cobblebank location brings this extremely important and muchneeded facility another step closer to being developed, which I know is very welcome news for both Council and our community who have supported the campaign for a local public hospital.

Minister for Health, Martin Foley MP visited Cobblebank this month to announce that land at 245-267 Ferris Road, Cobblebank had been selected as the site for the new 24-hour hospital. With the support of the community, Council has advocated strongly for a new Melton hospital and will continue to advocate for the timely delivery of this facility. The state government’s business case into the Melton hospital is being finalised and will guide detailed planning of the facility. The next steps will include completing the land acquisition, determining the model of care and allocating significant funds to construct the facility.

Cambridge Ward with Cr Steve Abboushi As the COVID situation continues to affect individuals, families and indeed, entire communities across Victoria, it’s important to remember that there are a number of support services available to City of Melton residents through Council’s Connector Hubs. Stevenson House in Caroline Springs, and Timbertop Children’s and Community Centre in Aintree, are two such hubs, offering support and information on how to access COVID support services. They’re also a great way for residents to stay connected, healthy and informed, particularly during lockdown.

If you’re looking for information about food relief, financial or mental health counselling, job readiness, social connection or online learning activities, Connector Hubs are a great place to start. The hubs can be accessed by appointment only, so be sure to call or email in advance to set up a time to talk to someone. The $1.8 million project has received $500,000 in funding from the Federal Government under its Local Roads & Community Infrastructure funding program, and will deliver a new grass oval, replacement oval fencing, shelters for players and officials, and replacement of the synthetic cricket wicket. With an urgent and growing need for hospital services in the outer west, a new Melton hospital is of course a high priority and we thank the government for recognising the health needs of our community. We will continue to strongly advocate to the state government to ensure that they include construction funds in the 2022/2023 budget, to begin construction in 2022, and to ensure the hospital is operational in 2026. The community desperately needs and deserves the Melton hospital. On another note, we’ve just adopted a renewed community vision outlining the community’s priorities and aspirations for the City of Melton’s future. ‘Melton City 2041—The City We Create’ is an exciting vision that will be used as a tool to help influence key Council decisions and ensure that our community’s voice, needs and aspirations are at the heart of Council’s work. Residents question EPA report By Tara Murray Kealba residents have slammed the Environmental Protection Authority’s (EPA) report into the Kealba landfill hotspot fires. The recently released EPA report into the effects of the hotspots, which was requested by St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman in December, said the hotspots were likely a result of oxygen which had ingressed into the landfill due to the design of the cells within the former quarry, combusting with old, decomposed waste. The report said the risk of impacts to human health from air emissions released by the hotspots has been found to be low, based on air

quality monitoring. The EPA held an online community meeting last Monday to explain the report. Many residents have complained that the meeting was a waste of time, with the EPA not answering their questions nor providing any further information. Kealba resident Colin Pham sent an email to the EPA, Brimbank council and MPs following the meeting, saying he felt some of the report was “misleading”. In the email, seen by Star Weekly, Mr Pham said the report omits air quality monitoring data. “The significance of poor air quality and

adverse health outcomes due to PM2.5 [fine particulate matter] cannot be overlooked,” the email said. “Given that the Kealba landfill has had four hotspots burning for a lengthy period, more data needs to be shown in relation to this measure.” Mr Pham noted that the EPA measured PM2.5 levels by the National Environment Protection 24-hour standard, which the majority of levels measured were less than. However, he feels the EPA failed to consider the annual standard. “It is widely accepted that exposure to PM2.5 at any concentration for any duration will result in adverse health outcomes,” he wrote.

“There is a clear trend over time that demonstrates an increase in PM2.5 concentration. I would like to request that EPA publishes an amended report with the annual average. All of the data for all samplings events should be included.” An EPA spokesperson said the authority had worked extensively with experts on this issue and stood by the facts and figures produced in the report. “EPA understands the concerns of the Kealba community and we are working hard to ensure the operators clean-up the Kealba landfill site as quickly as possible, and that it is also done safely,” the spokesperson said.

Greening Taylors Lakes A new group will focus on ways to improve the low tree canopy cover and greening of Taylors Lakes. The group, which will be a branch of the Lions Club of Taylors Lakes, had its first meeting last week. Lions Club’s Uros Rasic said there were many opportunities that exist within Taylors Lakes and surrounding areas to achieve a greener, cooler and healthier environment. “It is proven that Brimbank municipality has a low tree canopy cover with many areas vulnerable to heat incidents due to the insufficient shade and tree coverage,” he said. “With lower than average health outcomes and engagement in physical activity within the city of Brimbank, compared with the state average, there is a real need to continually extend and bolster parks and gardens to add

natural recreational areas. “We will identify, map and plan to address these concerns.” Mr Rasic said the group would work with Brimbank council, other stakeholders and community groups such as LandCare groups, Friends of Organ Pipes, Friends of Taylors Creek, Friends of Sydenham Park and local schools. Hot Seat win a ‘shock’ Brimbank resident Dao Tran said she was in “disbelief” following her win on Millionaire Hot Seat. Ms Tran said her $50,000 win was a shock, adding that she didn’t expect to go far on the Channel nine game show. “Honestly thought I would get my first question wrong,” she said. Ms Tran said the win opened up enormous possibilities for her, including spoiling her mother. Ms Tran said the prize money would also help fund her wedding later in the year.

“Most of it will go towards the wedding,” she said. When asked how she prepared to compete on Millionaire Hot Seat, Ms Tran said she practiced on trivia apps on her phone, but said the questions on the show were harder. “[I was] doing a bit of reading [and I] found this Hot Seat app, which I was kind of practising on.” Daniel Cook

A pipeline which will secure water supplies for people in Brimbank, Melton and Hume is being put to use. The Holden Reservoir Inlet Pipeline, which is part of a $22 million project that began in 2019, is now full of water for residents of the three municipalities. The pipeline will also provide water supplies from the critical Greenvale-Sydenham transfer system to support Melbourne’s rapidly expanding outer north-west.

Night market to highlight Keilor By Tara Murray A new night market in Keilor is being started to give business owners a chance to show their wares. The first Village Night Market, the brainchild of local businesswomen Prue Houston and Jodie Robinson, will be held at the Keilor Bowls Club on September 1. “A couple of us have retail-based products and had looked at the idea of having a market. We thought about a Keilor market and getting the community involved. It has gone from there.” The pair put out a call for local businesses who were interested in being involved last

week. Ms Houston said they had been shocked by the response so far. “I was shocked how many creative little businesses are in the area,” she said. “We can showcase those businesses.” Ms Houston said during COVID-19 a lot of small businesses had done it tough and that many people didn’t know that they existed. She said it would be nice for the community to see what was around the local area. “It’s great for local businesses and we’re looking to have a spread of businesses. “We’ve had applications from a broad range of businesses - people who make dog treats, local gyms, baby clothes-makers and people

who sell Tupperware.” Ms Houston, who runs an online clothing boutique, said they were hoping to cater for everyone with the market and hope to hold one monthly. “We’re hoping to have these events every month, but we’ll look to get this one under our belt first and see how things go,” she said. “If we’ve got too many people for the first market, we’re happy to have a waiting list or lock people in for the other events.” Applications to be part of the market close at the end of this month. From behind the mask Deer Park West Primary School pupils’ creative talents have reached new levels. Pupils at the school have learned a number of new skills, from painting and design to music and performance, as part of a program run by Future Prophets. Future Prophets’ Dale Gorfinkel worked with grade 6 pupils as they produced an array of works which are on display at the Deer Park Hunt Club. “The kids have been developing these alien character masks that we call prophets,” he said. “We have been developing performances and different sound effects. At the exhibitions of the masks, we’ve created some videos using the performances and the sounds we’ve been working on.” Mr Gorfinkel said Future Prophets had tried to transform the way the children thought when it came to art. He said this was his first time doing a program like this and he had really enjoyed it. School principal Senka King said it had been an amazing experience for the children. “To have an artist mentor them and then showcase their work in a professional way, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “Kids need to be taught academically at school, but you also need to educate the whole child and consider creating the other side of learning.” Ms King said watching the Jam Club, where pupils got to try different instruments, was interesting. Pupils Chloe and Dakota said it was amazing getting to see their work on display. The pupils attended the exhibition before it opened. “Seeing everyone’s artwork in one spot made it feel like a real art show,” said Datoka, who enjoyed the painting and using the glue gun. “It was a really good opportunity for a lot of kids.” Chloe added: “I really enjoyed the performing and learning about the technology. Crossing removal under way By Tara Murray Major works are under way as part of a construction blitz for the Fitzgerald and Robinsons roads level crossing removals. The works, which started on Thursday and will run until July 25, will result in two giant cross beams being lifted into place at Fitzgerald Road in Ardeer. The first part of the works involve a 65-tonne piling rig and a 40-tonne excavator digging nine-metre-deep foundations for a new road bridge. Buses have replaced trains on sections of the

Geelong, Warrnambool, Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough lines during the works. During the works, replacement coaches aren’t stopping at Footscray or Sunshine stations. Sunshine passengers can catch replacement buses from Melton or Wyndham Vale to Deer Park, connecting with the 420, 422 or 427 bus routes between Deer Park and Sunshine. Commuters are being urged to allow extra time and download a temporary timetable to plan their travel. Road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, will also be affected. Allan said it was great to see work starting on another level crossing removal in the west. “We’re just starting to see the real time benefits of our most recent pipeline of works.” The removal of the two level crossings will reduce travel times in Brimbank, with boom gates currently down for up to 45 per cent of the morning peak in Ardeer, according to the state government. The removal of the two crossings are expected to be completed by 2023. The nearby Mt Derrimut Road level crossing in Deer Park has also been fast-tracked and will be removed by 2024.

Rail works blitz Commuters would have noticed a number of changes on the Sunbury rail line last week. Workers on the Sunbury line upgrade made the most of the school holidays and good weather to conduct an around-the-clock six-day construction blitz. Crews made major progress on platform improvements, power upgrades and overhead wiring installation. Among the upgrades was the installation of 20 kilometres of overhead wiring between Albion and Watergardens stations, the installation of trackside signalling equipment and platform improvements at Albion, Watergardens and Sunbury stations. Crews also continued the construction and fit-out of a new substation at Calder Park, as well as new signalling equipment at Watergardens, Calder Park and Sunbury stations, works on a panel and post wall in

Sunbury near Station Street, and continued electrical work for traction power upgrades at Tottenham, Keilor Plains, Holden Road, Diggers Rest and Jacksons Hill. The Sunbury line upgrade is due for completion in 2023. The project also includes the Gap Road level crossing removal in Sunbury, which should be finished next year. Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said every bit of progress on the Sunbury line upgrade would bring local communities closer to better public transport. “There will be huge benefits for communities along the line once the Metro Tunnel Project is complete, including a direct trip to five new stations at key city locations like Parkville and St Kilda Road, and a future link to Melbourne Airport Rail,” she said. Green Gully mourns club founder By Tara Murray Henry ‘Harry’ Moakes OAM quickly made his mark in the St Albans community after arriving in the country from Malta in 1955. He was only in the country a month when he formed a soccer team which was registered the following year under the banner of Ajax Soccer Club. The club would later change its name to Green Gully Soccer Club. It was fitting that the club would be the location for the final farewell for Mr Moakes, who died on July 7, aged 91. Mr Moakes’ daughter, Sandra Bradbury, said her father just wanted to help as many people as he could despite having a tough childhood and

debilitating illnesses which left him unable to drive, among other things. “He has really humble beginnings given up during the Second World War, in and out of bomb shelters trying to keep safe,” she said. “He came from a background of wanting to help people and that was his main goal. He would say he was never clever or never rich, but what he could give you, he would give you.” Mr Moakes also founded the St Albans Ethnic Association and the Floriana Senior Citizens Association. Both associations raised money for charities. He was involved in the Combined Pensioners Association for 30 years. Ms Bradbury said her father was so loving and thought anything that his kids and

grandkids did was just great. “He loved his grandchildren and his children,” she said. “He was a generous man. He … wore his heart on his sleeve.”

Mr Moakes was awarded a medal of the Order of Australia in 1996 for his service to the community through Green Gully Soccer Club, the St Albans Ethnic Association and organisations assisting the aged. Ms Bradbury said the soccer club was one of his great loves. Green Gully operations manager Ray Mamo said it was only because of people like Mr Moakes that the club is where it is today. “His dream and vision to dream up a football club is amazing..” Mr Moakes remained involved with the club until recently. “A lot of the old members still called him coach,” Mr Mamo said.

Former mayor remembered Former Brimbank mayor Dorothy Costa is being remembered as a kind person who gave much to the community. Mrs Costa, who served on Keilor and Brimbank councils from 1989 to 2008, was laid to rest last week after dying on July 5 following a long illness. Mrs Costa’s oldest daughter, Michelle Rhodes, said her mother was passionate about her family and the community. “She was elected to be in the Keilor council in 1989 and was mayor in 1991 [1991-92],” she said. “She continued to serve on council [which became Brimbank council] and was mayor in 2004. She was on council until 2008, when she retired. “She served on the PCCC [Police community consultative committee] and was on the committee of the Keilor Gift. She was involved with sporting groups and did a lot of volunteer work over the years. “She was involved in work for teenagers and getting funding for community parks and gardens.” Ms Rhodes said her mother’s biggest focus was giving back to the community. After growing up in the country, she settled in North Sunshine with her family. She and husband Frank later moved to Keilor and ran their own business. “She was about the community all the time,” Ms Rhodes said. “When there were injustices, she felt she could use her voice and make sure things could happen. “She was fair and liked to do the right thing, which wasn’t always the easy thing.” Ms Rhodes said that love of helping others also flowed into their house growing up. Ms Rhodes, her sister Lisa and brother Frank, remember plenty of good times. “The house was always full of teenagers,” she said. “She would always feed all of us.” Mrs Costa also liked to travel and said a trip to Italy three years ago was a highlight. Virus admissions among highest By Tara Murray More than 200 people with COVID-19 were admitted to Sunshine hospital last year, according to a state government report. Victorian Health Services data, released last month, also compared the number of coronavirus cases acquired in select hospitals between January 25 and November 15, 2020. Of the hospitals surveyed, Sunshine hospital had 230 people admitted with community-acquired COVID-19, the second highest in the state. Royal Melbourne Hospital’s City campus,

had 243 community-acquired cases in the same timeframe. The report found that overall, 2492 people were hospitalised with COVID-19 in Victoria between January 25 and November 15 last year. More than 4166 hospital staff were infected with the virus. There were 54 patients admitted to Sunshine hospital from aged care facilities, which was the fifth-highest of the hospitals listed. The report found that six people caught COVID-19 while at Sunshine hospital, while a further two had been diagnosed post-discharge which was attributed to the hospital.

At Western Health’s Hazeldean Transition Care in Williamstown there were 19 cases of hospital-acquired infection and 15 at Footscray hospital. Overall, 30 hospitals were identified as having patients with hospital-acquired infections with a median of two cases per hospital. The report showed that most of the hospital-acquired cases occurred in hospitals within Melbourne’s north-west region, reflecting areas of highest community virus prevalence. There have been 2037 COVID-19 cases in Brimbank since the pandemic started, second

behind Wyndham which has had 2253 cases. The report was commissioned by the state government and key stakeholders to better understand COVID-19 transmission in Victorian hospitals. It found that overall, effective infection prevention and control policies and practices are in place across Victorian health services. “Valuable lessons have been learnt from the COVID-19 experience that will continue to strengthen systems and preparedness for future epidemics, improving safety and outcomes for patients, staff and the Victorian community,” it states.

Time for youth to shine Talented young artists from across Brimbank are shining in a new exhibition which kicked off last week. Mary Zakanj is one of the artists involved in the YouthNow Exhibition, run by the YouthNow and Gallery Sunshine She said she jumped at the chance to show her work to a wider audience. “I’m part of YouthNow and one of the teachers asked if I wanted to get involved,” she said. “I had shown her my work before. “I then asked my sister whether she wanted to be involved as well. “One of my pieces was a sculpture made out of paper mache and plaster that I had made for a contest that hadn’t been accepted. I was able to give it some life. “I also printed some of my old artwork and framed them. They are nice big prints.” Zakanji, whose art prints are for sale, said

A voice for young people A podcast started during the COVID-19 pandemic to help give a voice to young people in Melbourne’s west continues to go from strength to strength. Tara Murray catches up with creators, Michael Lim and Julia Truong to find out more about Collective West, the inspiration behind the podcast and what to expect in the second season.

“W

hat we saw from the first and second lockdown was the disproportionate impact that the lockdown had not only on Melbourne’s west, but in Brimbank,” Michael Lim recalls. “We saw how much it was affecting young people.” Keen to find some way for young people to approach the pandemic in a different light, the 2018 Brimbank young citizen of the year started thinking about what he could do to make a difference. Lim wanted to help young people who had lost their jobs and were experiencing mental health problems to connect with others. When he decided to start a podcast, he reached out to his good friend Julia Truong, a fellow Brimbank resident, and got the conversation going. “We saw the disproportionate impact that this was having on the west and the clear connection between having low education and payment with work,” he said.

“I think it was anger and injustice. Because we couldn’t be there face-to-face and we couldn’t have gatherings, or even talk to people, we wanted to create a platform where we could be a voice for young people. “Being young people ourselves, we thought about interviewing thought leaders or community leaders from across the west that may not have a platform or speak to other young people. “We thought how can they turn this challenge into an opportunity? We wanted to create a really positive social impact across the west.” Truong jumped at the opportunity to work with Lim on the project. She said Collective West started as two good friends sharing some insights and grew from there. “It’s really exciting how it has evolved over time,” she said. “The people we’ve managed to interview so far have been very fascinating. Looking back, if I was younger… I would have found it to be helpful. “As positive role models in our community, we wanted to create a platform for young people by young people, and help break down that cycle of disadvantage.” The podcast started with the pair talking about their experiences. Since then, their guests have included Brimbank deputy mayor Jasmine Nguyen, former Western Chances chief executive Rhyll Dorrington and Reana Cazar, a senior associate at a social impact firm that works in Melbourne’s west. Both Lim and Truong admitted they were surprised by the impact that the podcast series had on local people. “Part of me thought it might not work out and people might not be receptive to it, but the majority of the feedback we are getting is people who are appreciative of other young people, community leaders, a platform and the listeners getting so much value from it,” Lim said. “They get so much value out of hearing these Julia Truong and Michael Lim on their podcast, and in Brimbank (right). Not so cryptic tax obligations The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is concerned that many taxpayers believe their crypto-currency gains are tax-free or only taxable when the holdings are cashed back into Australian dollars. Assistant Commissioner Tim Loh said that this year the ATO will be writing to about 100,000 taxpayers with cryptocurrency assets. “We will be explaining their tax obligations and urging them to review their previously lodged returns. We also expect to prompt almost 300,000 taxpayers as they lodge their 2021 tax return to report their cryptocurrency capital gains or losses. “While it appears that cryptocurrency operates in an anonymous digital world, we closely track where it interacts with the real world through data from banks, financial institutions, and cryptocurrency online exchanges to follow the money back to the taxpayer.” The ATO matches data from cryptocurrency designated service providers to individuals’ tax returns, ensuring investors are paying the right amount of tax. Businesses or sole traders that are paid cryptocurrency for goods or services, will have these payments taxed as income based on the value of the cryptocurrency in Australian dollars. Holding a cryptocurrency for at least 12 months as an investment may mean you are entitled to a CGT discount if you have made a capital gain. In limited circumstances cryptocurrency may be a personal use asset. The ATO has created a cryptocurrency factsheet External Link with tips and information on how capital gains tax applies to cryptocurrency. Details can be found on the ATO website.

SPORT Former Socceroos star to lead Western United Former Australian soccer star John Aloisi is the new coach of Western United. United announced last week that Aloisi had been appointed for the next two seasons, replacing inaugural coach Mark Rudan. Western United chairman Jason Sourasis said they were thrilled with the appointment. “Throughout the recruitment process, John stood out as someone who reflects the values of Western United,” he said. “His desire to be successful and to create a high performing sporting environment was impressive. “This appointment complements our goal of achieving sustainable success. “John will build on the foundation already set by our hard-working football department and leadership team.” Aloisi had a successful playing career notching up 55 games for the Socceroos and scoring 27 goals - including the goal that sealed

Australia’s spot in the 2006 World Cup. He then moved into coaching. He coached Melbourne Heart for two seasons and was sacked during the second season after failing to win a game in the first 17 games. In 2015 he was appointed coach of Brisbane Roar and in his first two seasons at the club took them to finals. In 2018, he resigned after the club had a poor start to the season, with just one win. Aloisi said Western United was still in a development stage, which was an exciting thing to be a part of. He said it was an opportunity that he couldn’t pass up. “I’m grateful to be given this opportunity as head coach of Western United,” he said. “The club is very ambitious and I could see that and so am I. We both want success, I want to be part of a successful club and be part of something that is very young.

“In this role, I’m privileged not only to coach, but to be part of building a club and a football future for the people of the west.” Aloisi, who is in hotel quarantine, said he was working hard from his hotel room to prepare for the season. He said he wanted to build on the foundations that have already been set. Western United will start pre-season training this week. “I’m excited to be part of your football club,” Aloisi said. “We want to keep on building in the community, there’s a lot of exciting things coming up. “I’m … making sure we get all the things in place in terms of signing players, in terms of our pre-season. “As soon as I get out I’ll be heading down to Melbourne and start training.” Tara Murray

Falcons still flying high

By Tara Murray Thomas Deng is living the dream as he aims to create history with the Olyroos at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. With the Australian under-23 soccer team returning to the Olympics for the first time since 2008, there’s plenty of excitement among the team. Deng isone of the key players. “I’m proud and honoured to represent my country and to go to an Olympic Games is something special and something you can always remember,” he said. “It’s something your family can be proud of and you can create many memories with the players and the staff you go on the journey with.” Deng, who played with the Western Eagles and then Green Gully when he moved to Australia as a 16-year-old, was a key player for the Olyroos as they strived to qualify for the games. He has played 11 games for the Olyroos since 2016. He said it was a massive achievement for the side to make it to the Olympics. “It’s another massive achievement by the team and also the staff, to all that hard work they’ve put in and to come back 13 years later is really special and we can’t wait to create more memories.” Deng, who is playing with Urawa Red Diamonds in Japan, said playing in the Olympics was up there with playing for the Socceroos, the open age national team. The former Melbourne Victory player has played one game for the Socceroos in 2018. “As a young kid you want to play at the big tournaments, to play at an Olympics Games is a huge accomplishment,” he said. “As a youngster I’ve grown up watching the Socceroos on TV and to put on the green and gold and to line up with the team is something special. “Hearing the national anthem and seeing the likes of Mark Milligan, Mathew Leckie in front of me and it’s something I’ll remember for the rest of my life. “I’m very honoured to represent my country and I can’t wait.” Deng said the team has big expectations heading into the competition. “We want to reach the final and to win the gold,” he said. “In these tournaments you want to play the best and I think we have a fantastic group of boys and a good team and I think we can go all the way.”

City West Falcons came out switched on and ready to go in their Victorian Netball League championship clash with North East Blaze. Playing in the first round since the competition split into two pools, the Falcons put in one of their best performances of the season on Wednesday night in the 80-60 win. Falcons coach Marg Lind said the final result and margin was a bit of a surprise. Lind has worked with many of the Blaze players and was wary of the talented young player they have. “We were pretty much on fire,” she said. “We had good flow and speed and we were looking physically strong and in good shape. “Last time they played us they had a bit more speed, they lacked that this time round. “The question is whether we can now continue that momentum.” Lind said they had some good performances across the court. She said Montana Holmes continued to impress in the midcourt. “Montana has brought a really good vibe to the side and is a really positive addition to the side,” Lind said. “When you get a new player in it can swing the vibe one way or the other. She has really swung the vibe in the right direction.” Lind said the three goalers did well, with an ill Maddy Gray switching in goal attack with Tee Salanoa. She said Jane Cook showed some good leadership in the circle with her voice and work with the other two goalers. Maggie Lind also had a good game, coming off playing with Collingwood in the Super Netball competition at the weekend. Maggie Lind, in her second game for the Magpies, started at wing attack, in the absence of Kelsey Browne. The Falcons are due to face the Hawks this week. Lind said with the structure confirmed for the season, they now needed to stay focused and have some fun out there. “We’ve got nothing to lose,” she said. “If we can get there [a premiership] it will be good, if not we had fun playing.” Tara Murray
