Stacey Rocco is using her professional powers for good in her new role as fundraising and community engagement manager of the Werribee Hospital Foundation. The Williams Landing resident is also a dedicated powerlifter, after taking up the sport at age 31. “I liked that powerlifting was inclusive and it does not matter your age, gender or how stereotypically fit you are,” Ms Rocco said. “Powerlifting has improved my confidence in myself. “My first powerlifting goal was to squat 60 kilograms and I failed it multiple times. Now my first warm-up squat is 60kg. “I am proud of how far I have come.” Ms Rocco said she was looking forward to making a difference in the community in her new role with the foundation. The foundation is raising money to purchase new palliative care beds, which cost $12,000 each, for Werribee Mercy’s Palliative Care Unit. “We are also planning our annual 5KOK virtual walk after the huge success of last years’ event mid-COVID,” Ms Rocco said. Residents battle ‘brothel’ By Alesha Capone Residents of a Williams Landing street who believe an Airbnb house is being used as a brothel are calling on authorities to take action. Residents say there are often different women, sometimes accompanied by a man, who stay at the house for three to five days at a time. Multiple websites have advertisements for an escort who purports to be based in the street and one resident said people mistakenly knock on their door looking for drugs or a prostitute. Star Weekly has spoken to several neighbours in the street who want to remain anonymous. They say they have taken their concerns to

They’ve also sent photos and videos of activities associated with the property to police. “We pretty much all have contacted the council and emailed Airbnb, and there has been no follow-up, nothing,” Brad said. Brad, is so fed-up that he has turned to western metropolitan MP Bernie Finn for help. In Parliament last week, Mr Finn asked the Minister for Local Government to contact Wyndham council on the resident’s behalf. “It’s an appalling situation,” Mr Finn said. “You cannot have illegal brothels popping up in residential areas, especially with families nearby.”

Brad, said he was “in no doubt” that illegal sex work was occurring at the house. He said he knocked on the door of the residence about a month ago, and a woman answered the door and invited him in. “I said, “How much?” and she said, “Don’t talk outside,” Brad said. Brad, who has a young son, said he was worried about having an illegal brothel in a neighbourhood where children live. A Police spokesperson said they had received reports of an illegal brothel operating at a Williams Landing address throughout June. “As the investigation remains ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further at

this stage,” the spokesperson said. Wyndham’s director of city operations Stephen Thorpe, said the council has no record of any complaints about a brothel in Williams Landing but had received one complaint about a party being held at the property in question. “The complainant was advised that short-term rentals are not regulated by council, and they should contact police,” Mr Thorpe said. Airbnb’s head of public policy, Derek Nolan, said community safety was a top priority. “We … proactively and collaboratively work with police, take action against guests and hosts who breach our policies, and invest in … our high-risk reservation screening system.”

West unemployment rate rises By Alesha Capone Melbourne’s west recorded the highest unemployment rate within the metropolitan area during April, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). About 42,100 residents of the western suburbs (8.8 per cent) were unemployed during April, compared to about 35,700 people for the same time in 2020. The south-eastern suburbs had the next highest unemployment rate, with about 26,200 people (5.4 per cent) out of work in April.

In June last year, businesses in the 3029 and 3030 postcodes, which includes Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Truganina Derriumt, Point Cook, Werribee and Werribee South, lodged a combined total of 6953 applications for the federal government’s JobKeeper wage subsidy program – the highest number of applications in the state outside of Melbourne. The JobKeeper subsidy ended in March, although a media release from the ABS said that “the end of the JobKeeper wage subsidy did not have a discernible impact on employment between March and April”.

During the first COVID-19 pandemic lockdown last year, the Wyndham Park Community Centre (WPCC) in Werribee established the volunteer-run Birdcage Community Store for residents in need of food and other necessities. WPCC manager Greg Ferrington said that in the past 12 months there has been “a dramatic increase in the number of people accessing our community store due to loss of work or a reduction in their hours”. “The impact of the pandemic on Wyndham was significant as many community members

work in the service industries,” he said. Mr Ferrington said other Wyndham centres have also experienced an increase in the number of residents needing access to food. WPCC is rolling out a community pantry program across its fellow neighbourhood houses, community centres and some schools. “We saw these pantries as a way of supporting these community members, for a day or two, until they could get to a more established food program elsewhere in the city,” Mr Ferrington said.

Mr Taylor said he has enjoyed seeing the students discover new ways to tell the Alice in

Wonderland story and re-interpret the classic tale for a modern audience. “I think it’s the wonder of Wondaland that they enjoy,” he said. The show is for two hours with a 20-minute interval. Students at a Tarneit school will bring to life a musical inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Wondaland was penned by Good News Lutheran College’s artistic director Callum Taylor and his writing partner Kathryn Yates. Forty-four community, educational and sporting groups and non-profit organisations are set to share in $194,079 in grants from Wyndham council. The reconnection and recovery grants initiative is part of the council’s Community Grants Program, which was launched earlier this year to support the recovery from COVID-19. Mayor Adele Hegedich said the grants, of up to $5000 each, will play an important role in reconnecting the community as it recovers from the pandemic. One of the grants has been awarded to South East Foundations Ltd, for a project which aims to equip people who have lost their jobs during the pandemic with resume writing skills, interview tips and connections to job agencies. The project will be undertaken in partnership with South West Training Services in Hoppers Crossing. The Committee for Wyndham has received a grant for a leadership program, which will deliver a series of online sessions focused on helping people from business, community, sporting clubs and not-for-profit organisations. Other organisations to receive $5000 grants include MacKillop Family Services, Werribee Hockey Club, Iramoo Community Centre, Quantin Binnah Community Centre and Virgin Mary Mosque. The Wyndham Community and Education Centre in Werribee has also been allocated $5000 to collaborate with Play it Forward (Australia) to engage culturally-diverse residents in a community choir project.

Youngsters in the west are jumping back into the pool following the lifting of COVID-19 lockdown earlier this month. JUMP! Swim schools Hoppers Crossing, Point Cook, Maidstone, Caroline Springs and Keilor Park are experiencing their highest winter enrolment numbers on record. At JUMP! Swim schools across the state, enrolment numbers are 28 per cent higher this winter when compared to winter 2019. JUMP! Swim Schools chief executive Mark Collins said that swimming through the winter months was the most important thing families could do to prepare a child for the summer beach and pool visits. “According to the most recent Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report, drownings

in February were actually the same as the number in July,” Mr Collins said. “The report also shows that 19 per cent of drowning deaths happen in winter.” Mr Collins said it usually only took children two to three weeks to start forgetting their core swimming skills. “Lockdowns have definitely interrupted lessons and swimming progress in Victoria, so it’s more important than ever to get back to the pool,” he said. “If children take the winter months off, by the time they go on September school holidays, they’ve lost most of their skills which puts them at serious risk. “A child who continues swimming through the 12 or so weeks of winter could actually advance one to two levels during this time.”

A preferred site has been chosen for the future Point Cook Community Hospital. The state government is in the process of acquiring a parcel of land at 140 Dunnings Road, Point Cook which is commercially-owned. The state government is investing $675 million to deliver 10 community hospitals in major growth areas across Victoria.

Diagnosis ‘out of the blue’ By Alesha Capone A close-knit family is on a mission to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer, after their father was diagnosed with the illness earlier this year. Tony Mesman, 68, lived in Hoppers Crossing between 1979 and 2018, before moving to Wentworth upon his retirement. Tony spent 38 years volunteering for St John Ambulance, including more than 15 years as superintendent of the Wyndham division. He also volunteered with the CFA. Tony’s four children – daughters Lyndell Creswell, Jacinta and Joanne and son Phillip – are appealing for other people to familiarise themselves with the signs of pancreatic cancer, because the disease often does not show symptoms in its early stages. Some of its symptoms can include abdominal and mid-back pain, unexplained weight loss, yellow skin or eyes, new-onset diabetes, digestive problems and a loss of appetite. Pancreatic cancer groups urge anyone showing these symptoms to visit their GP. Lyndell said her dad developed stomach pains and started losing weight, and developed stage two diabetes in December. He went to see the doctor, but it was not until his pain became so bad one night in February that an ambulance was called. Tony was then diagnosed with stage-four pancreatic cancer. Lyndell said the news came “out of the blue” for her family. “No one in the family has had pancreatic cancer, it was such a shock,” she said. “Four months ago he was fine.” Lyndell said Tony survived prostate cancer about 10 to 15 years ago, but his latest cancer diagnosis did “not look good”.

Tony is undergoing chemotherapy and is in palliative care, with nurses coming to his home three times a week and Meals on Wheels delivering food. Lyndell said that she and her siblings, along with Tony’s 10 grandchildren, visited him as often as possible.

“I would hate for other families to go through this, we want to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer, as most people don’t find out until stage four and then nothing can be done,” she said. Lyndell and her siblings recently had their photo taken with Tony. Jacinta made special T-shirts for the occasion,

in purple – the official colour of pancreatic cancer. Lyndell said the photographer, Jeremy Heffernan, offered to take the pictures because his wife was able to save their child, who was choking, as a result of first aid Tony had taught her.

Council election complaints high By Alesha Capone Sixty-eight formal complaints related to the Wyndham council election were lodged with the Local Government Inspectorate last year. The inspectorate last week released a report into the 2020 municipal elections, with Wyndham’s election the third most complained about in the state. Nillumbik topped the list with 86 complaints, followed by Stonnington on 74 complaints. Some of the complaints submitted in regards to Wyndham were about ratepayers’

associations or anonymous material distributed in the area, while other related to councillors re-contesting their seats – which is not actually an offence. Eighty-six people stood for election in Wyndham last year. Of the complaints the inspectorate received in the municipality, 26 mentioned a specific candidate. The inspectorate issued five warning letters as a result of complaints made by Wyndham residents. One of the letters related to a “misleading or deceptive matter” under the Local Government

Make time to clean up Volunteers, including residents, businesses and community groups, came together for a clean-up and tree-planting event in Hoppers Crossing last week. The event, held as part of Wyndham council’s Green Living Series, was originally scheduled for World Environment Day earlier this month but was rescheduled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Nursery chief executive Samuel Fragapane said native plants required little maintenance. “Native plants also help support a healthy ecosystem, providing shelter and food for local wildlife,” he said. “All our plants are locally grown right here in Werribee South.” Telstra Business Technology Centre chief executive Craig Kennedy said now was the time for businesses in the west to “step up to clean up” their local areas and worksites. “We are also planning to include this event as part of our corporate social responsibility and sustainable goals and we are hoping to inspire other corporates to do some clean-ups too,” Mr Kennedy said. Act and four letters were about the printing and publication of electoral material. The inspectorate also found that 144 candidates across the state had submitted non-complaint campaign returns. All local government candidates are required to lodge returns, which are a record of gifts, donations or in-kind support valued at $500 or more they were given to use in their campaigns. A candidate must send their return to a council’s chief executive within 40 days of election day. The highest percentage of non-compliance

with handing in returns occurred in Wyndham, where 25 of 86 candidates were found to be non-compliant. Chief municipal inspector Michael Stefanovic said his election report has made eight recommendations to improve the transparency, accountability and integrity around the council election process. “This includes the recommendation to amend the Local Government Act 2020 to encompass social media or online activity in relation to electoral material and campaigning,” Mr Stefanovic said.

By Alesha Capone A “spectacular” property in Sanctuary Lakes has set a new price record for Wyndham, after selling for $3.2 million earlier this month. The Real Estate Institute of Victoria last week confirmed that the four-bedroom house at 19 Panorama Way, Point Cook was a new record for a residential house in the municipality, excluding acreage and development land. The previous record was set in May 2017, when 6 Blake Court, Truganina sold for $2.715 million. The Panorama Way house was privately sold by Fadi Saad and Kristy Wang of Sanctuary Lakes Real Estate. It is the third time the Panorama Way abode has set a record for being the most expensive house in Point Cook. It first set the record in 2013 after selling for $2.1 million before selling for $2.33 million in 2017. The residence features an entrance with a custom-made teardrop crystal chandelier, a stainless-steel chef’s kitchen with three ovens and two dishwashers, an entertainment room with a built-in bar and home cinema screen, and a swimming pool. The landscaped gardens include a boardwalk extending along the waterfront. “We knew it was going to set a record, regardless of the price,” Mr Saad said. “Now it has blitzed all the records for the entire area.” Mr Saad said multiple people inspected the house, both from Wyndham and further afield. His agency also received four or five international queries about the property. “It was a local buyer who closed the deal,” he said. “The buyer is over the moon with the

property, it’s spectacular, unique and in a prime location.” Mr Sadd, who has worked in the area for almost 19 years, said that while the real estate market always has its ups and downs, he has never “seen such an appreciation of quality, prestige homes” than at the present. In the past two months, his agency has

broken four records in Point Cook, including selling 22 Greg Norman Drive for $2.7 million and 9 Heron Way in an off-market sale for $2.8 million. He also sold a vacant site at 32 Greg Norman Drive for $2.9 million and 28 North Shore Drive for $1.4 million within a week of it hitting the market.

Court ‘win’ for motorists Wyndham council has welcomed a Supreme Court decision allowing it to acquire an easement which will support a future road connection in Manor Lakes. The decision has cleared the way for the council to secure access rights for a tract of vacant land in order to build from Ballan Road, past Manor Lakes Shopping Centre and through to Armstrong Road. The future east-west road to be constructed across the site will provide residents with more direct access to Wyndham Vale train station. The proposed road will include footpaths, bicycle lanes and 59 indented car parking bays interspersed with landscaping. The project will eventually require the acquisition of 9369 square metres of land. The council published a Notice of Acquisition related to the land in the Victoria Government Gazette in November 2018, which was served on the land’s owner – a company associated with the Dennis Corporation – a few days later. The company issued Supreme Court proceedings to challenge the application to compulsorily acquire the 26-metre-wide easement under Section 187 of the Local Government Act. Wyndham’s city design portfolio holder, Cr Josh Gilligan, said that building the road would help to reduce local traffic congestion on the way to and from the train station. Alesha Capone

Secure your home: Police By Alesha Capone Police are calling on Wyndham residents to engage in basic security measures to help prevent thefts from houses and garages, as statistics reveal iteams valued at $7.25 million were stolen in the municipality across 12 months. In the year ending March 2021, thieves stole 7118 individual items from Wyndham houses, garages, businesses and other locations. Wyndham recorded the eighth-highest number of thefts in the state, with Melbourne placing first (11,151 items stolen) and Brimbank second (8398). Within Wyndham, cash and documents

were among the most common property stolen (with 1089 items taken), along with 724 car accessories, 575 power tools and 504 tools. Wyndham’s acting Inspector Steve Hayes said police have noticed an increase in offenders accessing houses through unlocked rear and garage doors, often in an attempt to find keys to steal a vehicle “Burglars will often look for the most opportune time, such incidents often occurring late at night or during the day when people are at work,” acting Inspector Hayes said. “Members of the community can significantly reduce the chance of falling victim to these offenders by taking basic measures such as ensuring all their doors and windows

are secured at night and when they are away from the home, considering home security systems and cameras.” Acting Inspector Hayes said Wyndham police patrols have focused on higher risk times and locations. “Importantly we are working hard with our partners from our local Neighbourhood Watch groups in Tarneit, Point Cook, Manor Lakes and other areas to build community resilience.” Acting Inspector Hayes said encouraged people going away to register their absence on the Victoria Police website. Crime Stoppers Victoria, police and medical professionals are calling on young people to think about the consequences of carrying a knife. A joint campaign, ‘Lose the Knife, Not a Life’, highlights several incidents where a young person has been seriously injured or killed due to knife violence. A teenager has been charged with murder after the death of 17-year-old Bless Mulukwat Akoch at Eagle Stadium in Werribee in May. Eleven teenagers are facing murder charges following the death of 15-year-old Solomone Taufeulungaki in Deer Park in June last year. Crime Stoppers Victoria chief executive Stella Smith is asking young people to stop picking up a knife. “If you use a knife to hurt someone, that person will either retaliate or suffer a serious injury,” she said. “Either way, two young lives are at risk. One is at risk of ending up in prison and the other is at risk of being killed.” North West Metro Region Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius said one life cut short is one life too many. He called for parents to talk with their children if they do come across a knife. “Carrying a knife for self-defence is illegal. Bringing a knife to a fight is illegal. Seeing red, again Talented artists from across the west will have their work featured in a Hoppers Crossing exhibition next month. The RedWest Creatives Co-op Ltd, a group for creatives and artists in Melbourne’s western suburbs, will host primoRED2. Driven by a diverse and passionate board of volunteers – including president Ayesha Dharmabandu, vice president Tegan Pearson, treasurer Paul Zahra, secretary Nick Cowling and grants and funding officer Simpson Myers - the co-op engages and promotes artists throughout the west, helping to develop a sense of camaraderie and support while promoting their works to the greater community. RedWest’s premier event, the first primoRED exhibition, was held in 2019 in partnership

with the C&H Gallery in Hoppers Crossing. Drawing on the success of this event, primoRED2 will also be held in partnership with the gallery. Wyndham singing duo, Jessie Kovacek and her daughter Isabella, will perform at the exhibition which will run from July 2 to 23. As Mayor, one of my favourite duties is to officiate our many Citizenship ceremonies. The COVID-19 pandemic has meant that many of these ceremonies have been delayed, impacting the hopes and plans of thousands of Wyndham residents. That’s why I was so happy to help over 960 people take the pledge to officially become Australian citizens over the weekend. Hearing some of the stories from people who have fled wars, followed loved ones, or chased new careers, among so many other reasons for coming to Australia, is truly inspirational. While COVID-19 has impacted us all in different ways, people who are relying on their citizenship to provide ongoing security, buy a house, or build their businesses have had an especially difficult time of extended waiting times. Their resilience and positivity was on full display over the weekend and I would like to personally welcome everyone who officially became an Australian in one of our local ceremonies. Wyndham is a better place with all of you in it and I look forward to hearing all of your success stories in the future. Last week I told you all about my trip to Canberra along with Cr Robert Szatkowski and our Acting CEO, Natalie Walker, to attend the Australian Local Government Association’s (ALGA) 2021 National General Assembly. This event attracts more than 800 Mayors and Councillors from across Australia and is a chance for the local Government sector to realign its priorities. I’m proud to provide an update and to say that the NGA was a great success. Our Council raised a motion that sought the NGA’s support to call on our Federal, State and Territory counterparts to work with local governments in the roll out of place-based employment programs aimed at supporting disadvantaged job seekers – particularly refugees and humanitarians – under the New Employment Services Model. It was unanimously supported and will now be referred to the ALGA board to inform future policy initiatives, which is a fantastic outcome for Wyndham’s advocacy efforts and for our community. Life-saving partnership Western United coaches and staff will receive vital first aid training as a part of a new sponsorship agreement with local provider Results First Aid Training The Truganina-based company and United have signed a 12 month partnership, which will help the club provide a safer environment for those on and off the field. Members of Western United’s executive team have already attended a first aid training session, with up to 100 people to receive the

training during the next 12 months. Results First Aid Training chief executive Jude Barnes said the company was excited to work with Western United. “Sporting clubs like WUFC are often the hub around which great communities are built, providing much-needed social and sporting activities for everyone,” she said. “We love sport because it contributes so much to keeping people fit and healthy. But it does involve injuries.

“That’s why it’s so important for the WUFC to have people at all levels of the club trained in first aid to be able to support medical staff on the field and be ready to assist off the field as well. “The best first aid training in CPR … is often a life-saver, as we saw recently with that poor soccer player in Europe who collapsed on the field and whose life was saved by quick application of CPR.” Tara Murray

The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) has expressed concern about changes being implemented at the University of Melbourne U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital. The university last year entered into “a change plan” to manage the financial impact of COVID-19, which included an examination of service delivery and organisational structure at U-Vet. The university and Racing Victoria announced earlier this month that U-Vet would continue providing 24-hour emergency on-call services for serious limb injuries and fractures incurred by thoroughbreds in training and racing. However the NTEU branch president at the University of Melbourne, Annette Herrera, last week said that U-Vet would no longer offer a 24/7 emergency service “for the everyday pet owners in the Werribee community”. “It’s disappointing that the university isn’t making community engagement a priority,” Ms Herrera said. A university spokesperson said U-Vet’s small animal primary care team would increase, to make more appointments available to clients. Small animal emergency care will be available between 8am and 7pm Mondays to Saturdays at U-Vet. Critical care will be provided around the clock to animals already housed in the hospital and those referred to U-Vet by their primary care vet, the spokesperson said.

An $8 million resort club will be constructed in Tarneit’s Alamora estate. Construction of the club, which has been designed by architects ClarkeHopkinsClarke, is due to begin early next year. The resort, which will be exclusively for the use of Alamora residents, will feature a heated outdoor swimming pool, gymnasium, boutique café, multi-sport courts, family and function spaces, community gardens and barbecue facilities. Alamora, a 2000-lot master-planned community, is being developed on Sayers Road by Villawood Properties. New citizens welcomed

By Alesha Capone Third-generation Werribee South farmer Catherine Velisha has been named the winner of a national award. Ms Velisha, who is managing director of Velisha Farms, won the Boomaroo Nurseries Women in Horticulture award at the Hort Connections 2021 National Awards for Excellence earlier this month. The award recognises a leading female member of the Australian horticulture industry who has demonstrated outstanding ability and success in her chosen field. AUSVEG chief executive James Whiteside described Ms Velisha “as an inspirational and innovative leader in the fresh produce industry”. “Catherine’s passion for the industry is evident in her broader work, including regular donations to food relief charities and establishing a horticulture specific education business, VEG Education, and partnering with others to promote and increase awareness on farm safety and building a career in the industry,” Mr Whiteside said. Ms Velisha said that establishing the VEG Education program was something of which she is particularly proud. The program includes a farm experience for school students to visit a working production farm and packing facility to learn about produce and where food comes from. Hundreds of new Australian citizens have been welcomed to Wyndham as part of Refugee Week celebrations. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, six council citizenship ceremonies have been cancelled so far this year, causing 960 Wyndham residents to delay their plans to become citizens. To help make up for this, the council held three ceremonies at the Encore Events Centre in Hoppers Crossing at the weekend to confer Australian citizenship upon 480 refugees. Those who attended the trio of citizenship events represented more than 40 different countries. Wyndham’s welcoming city portfolio holder, Cr Jennie Barrera, said that Refugee Week – June 20 to June 26 – was the perfect time to welcome and celebrate new citizens. “Citizenship ceremonies bring the community together and help strengthen our social cohesion,” Cr Barrera said. “In welcoming 480 new citizens, we recognise modern Australia has been shaped by migration, with nearly half of all Australians either born overseas or who have a parent who was born overseas”. The Victorian Senior of the Year Awards are part of the annual Victorian Seniors Festival. The festival featured as a “reimagined” special for 2020 as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The reimagined festival took physical distancing into account, and was broadcast straight into people’s homes. The festival featured 131 video performances, and interviews with 146 performers, and had more than 160,000 virtual visitors to its website. The festival will be back in person in October 2021, to celebrate award recipients and their achievements.

or more than 20 years, the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards have celebrated the efforts of older Victorians to support, assist and encourage others within their communities. Disability, Ageing and Carers Minister Luke Donnellan said the awards will hold a “special meaning” in 2021, following the COVID-19 pandemic during which many seniors managed to maintain their involvement in community service despite lockdowns and uncertainty. “The Victorian Senior of the Year Awards is our opportunity to celebrate the invaluable contributions senior Victorians make to our state,” Mr Donnellan said. “It is more important than ever to thank these incredible seniors for sharing their skills, experience and time with the community.” Award categories include: Premier’s Award for Victorian Senior of the Year; Promotion of Multiculturalism Award; Healthy and Active Living Award; Ageing Well Award; COTA Victorian Senior Awards; and the Veteran Community Award. Peter Burquest was the recipient of the 2019 Veteran Community Award and is a Vietnam War veteran. He was nominated as an acknowledgement of his volunteer service to the Australian veteran community and his commitment in supporting young Victorians who come from underprivileged backgrounds. Mr Burquest said he was surprised to be nominated for the “great honour”. “There are so many people in the community looking after our senior citizens on a voluntary basis,” he said. “I’m a little bit humbled by [the award]. “I’m enjoying what I’m doing, and I think whilst the award was a bit more than I was expecting myself, it’s good for the community,

and nice recognition of the work I’ve done. “Many people are as worthy of such an award similar to this, if we just look at the bigger picture.” Mr Burquest co-founded the Caroline Springs RSL Sub-branch, which he said was the beginning of his extensive involvement in the community. “That was the yardstick that kicked me off on being involved with more senior veterans,” he said. “The RSL’s been really important for me in keeping up with the community. “We have quite a number of senior members on our list – war widows and ex-service persons – many who are not required to pay membership.

“Seniors have made an important contribution to communities, they have been integral in the development of this country and we, the country, owe a lot to them. “They’ve paid their taxes, they’ve done the hard yards, they just sometimes need some help, and we should be available to make that happen. “COVID has presented some real challenges, for our more senior socially-isolated group particularly, but we’ve been there to assist via our welfare visits/phone calls and small food packages during the long lockdown.” The sub-branch now boasts 258 members, and a turnover of about $300,000 a year. Mr Burquest said establishing the sub-branch from the ground up was “probably my greatest

community achievement”. “The development of the RSL was a hell of a ride for me in the early days, for nobody had any experience in starting a sub-branch,” he said. “Having started a brand new RSL, and not taking over something already established, it proved to be quite difficult. “Our purpose was to assist young troops returning from Afghanistan [and] Iraq as well as the roles mentioned above.” Each award nominee receives a certificate acknowledging their work. Award recipients are honoured at Government House at the Victorian Seniors Festival in October each year. Nominations for the awards close on Friday, July 9. Time to show our generous spirit Connolly’s Corner Sarah Connolly, Tarneit MP There’s no denying it’s been a tough couple of weeks, with the grim spectre of COVID rearing its head again in Victoria. I want to thank everyone who has done their part in staying at home over the past month and following the restrictions. Because of our collective efforts, we’ve managed to prevent a mass outbreak, save lives, and are now re-emerging from our recent lockdown. But I think the real lesson to take away from this recent outbreak is just how important the vaccine roll-out really is, to protect our community against future outbreaks. Not only do the vaccines protect us against the strains of virus that are currently wreaking havoc around the world – but they also prevent even deadlier variants from mutating in the future. Because whilst we try to go on with our lives in a relatively COVID-free manner, all around the world, newer, stronger and deadlier variants of the virus are mutating. We’ve seen some of them already in the form of the Delta and Kappa variants, and I know from speaking to many in the community over the past few months, how devastating these variants have been overseas, particularly in India. Make no mistake – there are many in our community who have lost family to these strains and my heart breaks with them. The virus we’re facing now is not the same virus we faced and defeated last year. Getting vaccinated is our only way out of this. I’ve been out over the past few weeks talking to many of the local businesses in Tarneit about the state government support that is available,

and my office has been flat out helping folks out with their applications for these grants. Now, more than ever, our local businesses need us. Now is the time to swing by your

favourite café for a coffee and brekkie roll (I’m pretty partial to that combo myself!) or buy a present for your kids’ birthday from a local retailer. Every dollar goes towards helping

our local businesses, often run by a family in your neighbourhood, to make it through this pandemic. We’ve got a generous spirit in Wyndham, and now’s the time to show it. You might have noticed the Shop Local campaign I and many others are currently promoting. It’s all about drumming up support for small business. Everyone has a part to play, including me – which is why I’m steering meetings normally held in my office, out into local cafes. I recently had the chief executive of VicHealth, Dr Sandro Demario, out in Tarneit to explore how we can encourage and deliver healthier lifestyles in Melbourne’s outer west. We chatted enthusiastically over a Tandoori Burger and Buddha Bowl at the Little Growling Café in Tarneit – which by the way were delicious! The COVID pandemic has been tough on everyone and some more than others. I personally feel like there’s light at the end of the tunnel. And that’s the vaccine. Many of us have struggled with our mental health over the past year. Please never hesitate to reach out for help if you need it. Lifeline (13 11 14) and Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636) are here for you. My office is also here to help and would love to hear from you – whether it’s COVID-related or not – and can be contacted on 9916 1778. MY WYNDHAM Hoppers Crossing resident Martin Probst is a best-selling author, a certified learning facilitator and is involved in several community business organisations. He chats with Alesha Capone. Tell me a bit about yourself … My wife Gerda and I moved to Wyndham in 2004. Since then, we have had two wonderful kids, Nadja and Oliver. In 2012, I started my own business journey as sole trader which has grown into a successful company, with the amazing support of Gerda. PROfound Leadership is all about human-centred leadership and I feel very honoured to have had the opportunity to, over the years, share our strategies, from facilitating local one-on-one coaching sessions to keynotes on big international stages. In 2019, I received the Learning Professional of the Year award at the Australian Learning Impact Awards, and last year PROfound Leadership was placed among the top 10 leadership development training/coaching companies in the Asian-Pacific region. However, as a beautiful mind once said: ‘People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care’, and that really resonates with me on a personal level. So, being of service to my family and our wonderful community is very important. The ongoing facilitation of The Future Leaders of the West (FLOW) programs, an initiative of the Committee for Wyndham, is one of my greatest privileges. The programs cover leadership topics that never in our lifetime have been more important than now. I am also actively involved as a board member of the Wyndham BizNet and as member of the Werribee Business and Tourism Association.

You have also written several books and audiobooks? Yes, I have, and the latest one, I did it! became a number-one international bestselling book. A great example of collaboration, containing stories and tips from 16 successful entrepreneurs around the world. I think the book was so well received as the stories are raw, honest and include real, personal life experiences and wisdoms that resonate with the readers.

What do you enjoy most about your work? I’m a people person, so spending time with other human beings and having some great solution-based conversations to get the best out of them and make their life a bit easier gives me a lot of motivation and joy.

How much has the area changed since you first moved here? It has changed enormously. I remember when we first moved here, there were lots of paddocks and horses. Now the population has grown massively.

What do you like about Hoppers Crossing and Wyndham? Being part of a greater community. With kids playing sports, basketball, dancing and tennis, it’s nice to go out and know your neighbours and have coffee. Having a local network and collaboration is really big for us. The higher-powered variants have the traction advantage of Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive. Gearchanges should be reasonably light, but remember the gearbox is a long way from the shift lever. This can give it a slightly spongy feel in older models. Look for signs of previous crash repairs. A ripply finish in any of the panels, or a mismatch in paint colour from one section to the other are fairly easy to spot. If there’s the slightest concern about possible crash history either get a full professional inspection - or find another TT. Check the roadster’s roof seals correctly when it is closed and that it doesn’t have any tears or cuts. Look at the carpets and the floor under them for the slightest sign of dampness. Uneven tyre wear at the front possibly indicates hard driving, or it may mean the TT has thumped kerbs. Both cause for concern.

The very stylish Audi TT was launched in1998. It had fascinating style and created a great deal of attention, from the motoring press and car lovers in general. The domed exterior lines of the body carry through to the cabin, with large circular dials and ventilation outlets. Audi TT first reached Australia in May 1999. The second-generation TT, introduced Down Under in November 2006, wasn’t as striking in its shape. That changed with the launch of the third generation here in February 2015, seeing the TT go back to a restyle of the original. Used versions of the first-generation Audi TT are getting on in years, but one with a clean service record and sensible driving is worth considering. Despite having the underpinnings of a VW Golf major repairs can be expensive. Audi TT is great fun to drive but, in the front-drive models feels more like a warm hatch than a full-on sports model. The third generation was launched in 2014. It is based on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform.In the early years there were several fatal high-speed Audi TT crashes in Europe, principally in Germany. These were caused by a design flaw. The aerodynamics weren’t quite right and the problem was exacerbated by the TT’s very short wheelbase. Later models were modified in their suspension and have a rear wing to push the tail to the road at speed. The wing spoils the purity of the visual effect in the eyes of TT purists. Your call… The gen-two Audi TT has a rear wing, that’s hidden at lower speeds and raises automatically at moderate speeds. That is at over 120 km/h, which is regarded as a moderate speed in

By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Somehow it doesn’t seem right that a large Audi SUV should have received the RS (Racing Sport) treatment. But when you stop and think about it the German automaker has been in the forefront of high-performance vehicles for many years. Since it launched the famed quattro way back in the late 1980s. Audi RS Q8 says it’s a masterpiece of engineering that can be used on racetracks as well as in off-road conditions. Hopefully the off-road feature is restricted to exploring the great Australian outback and doesn’t refer to off-road on racetracks… We have just spent an enjoyable week behind the wheel of the hottest, biggest Audi of them all, the RS Q8.

Styling There’s nothing shy and retiring about the Audi RS Q8. It has wider guards by 10mm at the front and 5mm at the rear. This not only makes space for 23-inch alloy wheels but also adds to the I-am-very-serious statement. The blackout treatment of the grille and air intakes gives it a tough look. As an aside, there are no cosmetic vents - all intakes serve a function. A slim roof-mounted spoiler tells drivers of cars that have just been overtaken that an Audi RS means business. The rear diffuser is finished in a honeycomb pattern. The huge two massive oval tailpipes not only look good but put out the right sounds, more about this in the Driving section of this test.

Interior The RS Q8 sports seats are finished in perforated leather with the signature RS honeycomb-pattern stitching. The front seats are heated and cooled, the rears have heating only. All three rear seats are large and comfortable. They slide fore and aft to let you juggle the passenger / luggage space. What seems to be the standard Audi instrument binnacle looks tiny in the big Q8, with the rest of the dash being extra wide to fill in the rest of the space.

system that’s operated by a large integrated touchscreen that’s easy to use. As always, we caution drivers about using these systems while their car is moving. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, while the intelligent navigation suggests route guidance based on your previous trips.

Engines / transmissions The Audi twin turbo 4.0 V8 engine produces 600 horsepower, or in our metric language 441kW. Then there’s the stump pulling 800 Nm of torque. You can leap from zero to 100km/h in 3.8 seconds - in an SUV ! Audi’s eight-speed automatic has been uprated to handle the extra grunt and to provide very sharp shifts to keep it keep the power coming. Drive is sent to all four wheels in a 40:60 ratio (front:rear) in normal driving. There’s a mechanical centre differential can send the four wheels between 70:30 or 15:85 to adjust to driving and road conditions.

Safety The big Audi Q8 has a full range of occupant protection systems should the car still crash. There’s plenty of equipment to keep drivers out of trouble if they’re paying more attention to emails and texts than their driving.

Driving Isn’t it a shame we still have these silly low speed limits on Australian motorways? We’ve spent many a happy day on German autobahns and noticed that Audis of all sizes and types are the biggest inhabitants of the fast lanes. The virtual Audi Cockpit has extra RS information for the sporting driver; a g-meter, torque and power output dials, as well as shift lights when you’re driving in manual mode. There are eight drive modes; Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, Efficiency, Allroad, and Off-road. Keen drivers who really know their stuff can tailor their RS Q8 to their precise needs, altering engine and transmission mapping, steering, the air suspension and even the sound of the engine. At low speed, the rear wheels turn five

degrees in the opposite direction to the front. This makes it more maneuverable in tight spaces such as tight car parks. In normal diving the rear wheels turn 1.5 degrees in the same direction as the fronts to improve handling. The air suspension, which can vary ride height by up to 90 mm. As low as 40mm for when you want to get sporty. It’s probably best use only on racetracks. Or you can lift to 200mm of ground clearance should you wish to exploit the RS Q8’s off-road abilities. Cornering is precise and the big Audi provides good feedback and lets you know when it’s starting to feel uncomfortable - which is at far higher speeds than you anticipate. It does like a drink. Around town and in the suburbs, we were looking at numbers in the 15 to18 litres per hundred kilometres. Okay, it’s a big heavy vehicle but we had expected better than this. Country running saw it drop to 11 to 13 litres. On motorways it came under 10 litres per hundred kilometres.

Summing up Audi RS Q8 is an SUV for all reasons. It looks and sounds great, eats up the miles effortlessly and isn’t overly expensive for its class. And if you’re paying $208,500 plus on-roads the fact that the big V8 chews into the juice isn’t really a handicap. 23 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 30 June, 2021

Teen eyes sports career By Alesha Capone For Werribee Junior Cricket Club (WJCC) player Lou Lou Field, sport provides a world of opportunities and the prospect of a future career doing what she loves. The 14-year-old cricketer also plays football (AFL) and basketball and is a regular at the gym. Field said she took up cricket after playing it at school with friends. She has been selected to participate in the 2021-22 Cricket Victoria Emerging Players Program, which is due to begin in August. “I was shocked, I didn’t expect it as I haven’t played that long,” she said of her invitation to try out for the program. “I’m just excited to learn everything they can teach me.” Field, who is captain of the Werribee Junior Cricket Club under-15 girls’ team, said she sometimes helps the newer players work on their skills. The talented teenager said she would like to thank her parents, all her coaches and the WJCC community. “The cricket club has given me so many chances and I wouldn’t be where I am today without their support,” she said. When it comes to football, Field plays with the Werribee Districts Football Club and the Western Jets Girls. Earlier this year, Field and Werribee Districts teammates Camryn Tyrell, Kensley Ward and Sarah Golding were named in the Western Jets’ under-19 girls’ team which played in the NAB League season extended squad. Field said she dreams of becoming a professional footballer. “I’m just really excited at how women’s sports have developed and we actually have the opportunity to make a career out of it.”

Winning return to the court City West Falcons returned to the court in fine form in the Victorian Netball League championship division, with a big win against the Aerials. After nearly a month off due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the Falcons were keen to get back on court last Wednesday. They started a bit sloppy before stepping it up in the middle two quarters to take control of the game. The Falcons switched things up in the last quarter, winning 66-33. Falcons coach Marg Lind said she was happy with how the team returned to the court. “The break did us good,” she said. “I thought all three of our teams looked pretty good out there. The championship side looked really good in the second and third quarters after a sloppy start.” Jane Cook shot 45 goals from 47 attempts. In the last quarter Lind moved her to goalkeeper. Lind also switched the mid-court around, with Montana Holmes going back in wing defence and Emma Walters getting some time at wing attack ahead of the national championships. SPORT Dual accolades for Western United defender Tomoki Imai has been named the Western United player of the season. Imai’s win was announced at the 2020-21 Western United Football Club Awards, presented by Tasman Logistics, earlier this month. Imai, a defender originally from Japan, joined Western United in February this year. During 26 games played with the club, he has recorded 90 clearances, 1393 passes with an 85.1 per cent success rate and 46 inceptions. Imai also received the Forever West Award (Fans’ Player of the Season) presented by Wyndham council. “I’m super happy that I was able to be awarded two awards,” Imai said. “I couldn’t do it without all of the Western United fan’s support. “I appreciate my teammates, staff and fans

from the bottom of my heart. “I would also like to thank my family members who were always by my side throughout this tough season.” The Young Player of the Season was won by Dylan Pierias for the second year in a row. Western United gave fans and members the opportunity to vote for the Emerald Goal Award (Fans’ Goal of the Season), which went to Lachlan Wales for his goal against Wellington Phoenix in match week 18. The season’s Golden Boot was won by Besart Berisha with seven goals scored throughout the 2020-21 campaign. Other award winners were goalkeeper Ryan Scott, who took home the Club Person of the Season award for the second year in a row. The Club Person is voted by Western United players and staff.

Western United also last week announced that it has re-signed midfielder Luke Duzel for another two seasons. “I’m very humbled and excited to sign on for a further two years at this fantastic club,” Duzel said. “Everyone here has supported and believed in me since the day I arrived at the club. “This club means a lot to me as I grew up in the west of Melbourne and I’d like to win as many games as possible next year and hopefully win some silverware for the club and our loyal supporters.”

Draft combine beckons By Benjamin Millar Western Jets rising star Jemima Woods has taken a big step on the path to the AFLW, snaring a highly sought invite to the competition’s key pre-draft talent showcase. The gun Bacchus Marsh teen, who has also pulled on the jersey for the Western Bulldogs VFLW, is one of a handful of NAB League players invited to attend the AFLW Draft Combine, which puts prospects through their paces prior to the NAB AFL Women’s Draft at the end of July. Woods, 18, said she is excited by the opportunity to demonstrate she can mix it with some of the game’s best. “It was pretty surprising as not many girls got picked this year,” she said. “At the start of the NAB league season it was my goal to get to this point, so it feels pretty good.” The journey for the talented forward and midfielder stretches back to involvement in Auskick around the age of five followed by steady progress through her teens. She said people’s attitudes to women’s football have come along in leaps and bounds during that time. “It was so weird, when all the girls actually started playing and the AFLW took off it was suddenly cool to play now,” she said. “That was a big change, all the girls were playing netball and basketball and stuff and now they’re playing footy as well.” Woods said she still enjoys watching the elite men’s teams go round, but the chance to see women living out her dream at the top level is a real inspiration as well. “It’s cool because earlier you just had to watch the boys play, which was cool as well, but watching the girls play you get more of an idea of what the game is like at that level.” Woods is now setting her sights on taking her own game to that level as early as this summer, hoping to catch the eye of recruiters at the draft combine. “My game has definitely improved the second half of the season, I moved around positions a bit, moved a bit more in the midfield, and that’s worked well for me,” she said. “I still like to play in the forward line though, swapping into the midfield.” Woods said her VFLW experience has also been a great opportunity to mix it with some of the game’s best. “A lot of the AFLW girls are also rotating through that comp, so it’s been really cool training with them and playing with them,” she said. Grant aids pandemic recovery The Werribee Football Club has been given $130,000 to help its recovery from the pandemic and to succeed in the restructured VFL competition. Werribee MP Tim Pallas last week said Werribee has scored funding from the state government’s Strengthening Victoria’s AFL Development Pathways Program (SVADPP). Mr Pallas said Werribee has “a long and famous history and are a much-loved part of the community”. “This support will help the club stay COVIDSafe and thrive in the expanded VFL competition to the benefit of local players, volunteers and supporters.” Under the SVADPP initiative, nine Victorian football clubs have been given grants to help support the extra costs of staying COVIDSafe and to help meet the travel expenses associated with playing games interstate due to the pandemic. Williamstown, Coburg, Frankston, the Northern Bullants and Port Melbourne also received $130,000 grants. Three AFL-affiliated clubs – Box Hill Hawks, Casey Demons and Sandringham – received $65,000. Tourism, Sport and Major Events Minister Martin Pakula said the grants would help clubs recover after a “coronavirus wipe-out in 2020 and further disruptions this year”. “Supporters of VFL clubs are among the most passionate in any sport and having a strong secondary league is important on the community front as well as on any football measure,” Mr Pakula said. Werribee FC strongly advocated for a funding package for second tier clubs set to compete in the restructured VFL competition. The club’s chief executive Mark Penaluna met regularly with Mr Pallas, over a period of 12 months following the cancellation of the 2020 VFL season. “We are very thankful to the Victorian government for making this money available and for granting our application successful,” Penaluna said. “This money gives us the opportunity to plan with some degree of confidence for the next few months and as we move into 2022.” Alesha Capone 25 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 30 June, 2021

Winning streak comes to an end By Tara Murray Werribee crashed back down to earth with a disappointing loss to North Melbourne in the Victorian Football League on Saturday. Having won its past four matches, Werribee was hoping to keep the momentum going against an improving Kangaroos side but it was made to pay for playing inconsistent football. Werribee trailed early, before hitting the front in the second quarter. It led by 14 points early in the third quarter, with the Kangaroos down to 20 fit men. Despite this, the Kangaroos kicked the next six goals. A last quarter comeback by Werribee fell short, with the Kangaroos taking the win, 14.4 (88)-12.11 (83). Werribee coach Michael Barlow said they were made to pay for not putting a full four quarters together. He said it was disappointing to let North back into the game in the third quarter having gained momentum. “It was a huge result for North and they came with a competitive spirit and attitude which we couldn’t match,” he said. “There was a bit of attitude from our point of view in that and a bit of method around the tackle and being able to absorb pressure. North came for a dog fight and their intention was clear early and, credit to them, [they] jumped us with a quick start before our bums had hit the seats. “You can’t really get the result when you essentially play one and a half quarters of football and don’t match the intensity consistently enough. “Realistically, if we had pinched it there at the end, was it a Band-Aid over a performance that shows we have a lot of work to do.” Barlow said poor starts continued to be a problem for the side and something the players and the coaches would need to think about over the next couple of weeks. “It’s not good enough to rock up to a game, the most important two hours of the week, and sacrifice 15 minutes of it.”

Barlow said they were also hurt by turnovers which directly led to four or ﬁve goals. Wylie Buzza, Hudson Garoni and Shaun Mannagh kicked two goals a piece for Werribee. Matt Hanson had 21 disposals in the win, while Bior Malual had 17 disposals. The game marked the milestones for three Werribee players. Tom Gribble played his 100th game for the club.

Dom Brew played his 50th VFL game. Barlow said he was a pleasure to coach. “We know what we get off Brewey every day. Another eight tackles today, he would acknowledge that it wasn’t his best day but he is one you throw the magnet up every week that he will compete.” One of the more pleasing performances in the loss was that of local debutant Connor Thar. He had 11 possessions, including two key passes that resulted in

goals. Barlow said the playing group could take notice of Thar’s efforts. “Connor showed he’s at the level and has been knocking on the door,” he said. “It’s someone others can look to as that’s how we want to execute with ball in hand.” Werribee has a bye this weekend, before facing Casey Scorpions. Barlow said they had a lot of areas to work on during the break.
