Volunteer honoured By Alesha Capone Hoppers Crossing’s Leslie Mather says he doesn’t volunteer for recognition or awards, but because he wants to help people. The “75 going on 50” year-old has been a volunteer visitor guide at Footscray Hospital for almost 25 years while also working in the hospital’s outpatients unit for a number of years. He retired from the job in July last year, but still volunteers at the hospital. On Monday, Mr Mather was awarded a medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in this year’s Queen’s Birthday honours in recognition of his service to community health. Mr Mather said his parents brought him up to “treat people the way you want to be treated”. “I just found you get so much back from volunteering, it’s incredible,” he said. Mr Mather said he first started volunteering after he was made redundant from the Commonwealth Bank at the age of 50. During his career he managed bank branches in Altona and Footscray. He is a secretary and convenor of the Westgate Region Prostate Cancer Support Group, which formed in 1999 and has served in several other health and cancer-related committees and organisations, including on the Victorian and Tasmanian Prostate Cancer Support Group Chapter Council, which comes under the umbrella of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. In 2011, Mr Mather received a Max Gardner Award for Distinguished Service from the foundation. Mr Mather, who lived in Brooklyn for most of his life before moving to Hoppers Crossing in 1971, said he was grateful that his wider family was supportive of his volunteering. In recent years, Mr Mather pulled back from some volunteering to care for his wife Laurette, after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Laurette died on May 7. She and Mr Mather were due to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary later this month. Mr Mather will be 75 on June 25, but described himself as “75 going on 50”. “I don’t understand people who say they are bored at home – go out and do some volunteering,” he said. ■ Queen’s

Public drinking alarms residents By Alesha Capone A Wyndham councillor says alcohol consumption at a Werribee park is causing concerns about public safety. Cr Mia Shaw said she has received a number of calls from residents since December to report people drinking in the Vincent Crescent park. She said drinking in the park, which is near a small shopping strip and houses, occurred “during the afternoons after work and, if weather was good, sometimes on weekends”.

One resident reported an incident of about 20 people congregating in the area and drinking. “They have been concerned about public safety, including kids that use the park,” Cr Shaw said. “I have been trying to resolve it and council officers have worked with me as well, Victoria Police have also been involved, but we cannot seem to solve this issue.” The council has in the past installed a sign in the area alerting visitors that drinking in a public place is banned, but Cr Shaw said it appears the sign is being “totally ignored”.

Cr Shaw has asked if council officers can work with local shop owners “to see if we can reactivate the area in a different way” and wants “a clear plan of action” on who is responsible for fining people for drinking and moving them on. “I’d like to understand from Victoria Police what more as a council we could be doing to stem this kind of behaviour,” she said. A Victoria Police spokesperson said officers worked closely with council in relation to local bylaws, and actively enforced bylaws including the safe and responsible consumption of alcohol.

Last year he was due to film the Indian reality shows Mujhse Shaadi Karoge, a dating show, and Bigg Boss, but he was unable to because of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. He left India to return to Australia in February. King said that at first he felt “helpless” to lose the opportunities, but he was glad to see his family happy and healthy back in Australia. “I came to terms when I saw my family being around me and their safety,” he said. “I just lost two replaceable opportunities –

but people have lost their lives.” King said he enjoyed being himself in the public spotlight, even when faced with controversies which have arisen on his television shows – such as kissing a co-star while in an open relationship with another contestant. “What I enjoy the most, is having people love me for being me,” he said. “My highlight would be meeting my fans globally, it’s hard to believe for me that a couple shows can leave a blueprint of your personality on people.” Details: @iamramizzz on Instagram.

Media personality, entrepreneur and producer Ramiz King says he always strives to be himself when appearing on television shows. King, whose real name is Ramiz Shah, was born in Afghanistan and moved to Australia with his family as a child. They lived in Queensland before moving to Werribee, where King attended The Grange P-12 College in Hoppers Crossing. King rose to fame in Afghanistan with his sister Rohina, after online comical skits they filmed together went viral. Tributes are flowing for two much-loved members of the Wyndham community, Connie Lucietto and Denis Benson, who both recently passed away. Long-time resident and florist Ms Lucietto died last week after a long battle with illness. Ms Lucietto was born in Italy on March 2, 1939 and later migrated to Australia. She ran All in Flowers, now known as Werribee Station Place Florist, for many years. Friend Trish Vejby said Ms Lucietto was a hard-working and colourful character, and a staunch Liberal Party supporter, who loved chatting to customers in her shop. “Everyone in Werribee knew her,” Ms Vejby said. “I used to say, to know Connie was to love her. She was very giving and very kind-hearted. Connie always wanted to stand up for the underdog. “She also didn’t suffer fools gladly and would put them in their place quickly.” Maree, an employee at Werribee Station Place Florist, worked alongside Ms Lucietto about 22 years ago at All in Flowers. “She had a tough exterior but underneath all of that she was a lovely rough diamond,” Maree said. Ms Lucietto is survived by her son Andrew, his wife Melanie and granddaughter Sophie. The team at Werribee Station Place Florist is also mourning Denis Benson, their courier of 15 years, who passed away on June 6. Florist manager Nella Pyke said that Mr Benson “had a heart of gold” and would be greatly missed.

Rescue dog Hope is among the hundreds of staffies loved by Wyndham pet owners. Hope’s owner, Manor Lakes resident Bec Davis, described her adorable pet as a “gentle soul” who always puts a smile on people’s faces. Hope is one of 1398 Staffordshire bull terriers registered in Wyndham, the second most popular breed in the municipality. Jack Russell terriers are the most popular, with 1486 of the breed registered in Wyndham. Labradors (1319), Cavalier King Charles spaniels (990), and German shepherds (876) round out the top five. Wyndham’s climate futures and environment portfolio holder, Cr Robert Szatkowski, said that 16,702 households own one or more dogs in Wyndham.

He said the council’s annual community survey and engagement sessions have “showed a huge demand for additional dog off-leash areas, specifically fenced locations”. The council is planning to develop more dog-friendly spaces in Wyndham, to cater for future demand as the population grows. Pop-up consultation sessions will be held at Presidents Park from 4-6pm on Wednesday, June 30; 8-11am on Thursday, July 1 at Tarneit Community Learning Centre; and 10am-noon on Sunday, July 4 at Saltwater Reserve. City joins vaccine effort By Alesha Capone Wyndham has become the first council in the state to join forces with local GPs – and a robot - to increase the number of people receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. The council teamed up with 40 general practitioners to run a high-volume vaccination event as a part of a pilot program, at the Encore Events Centre in Hoppers Crossing last Thursday. The GPs involved vaccinated their own patients, with a total of 100 people receiving a jab within two hours. A statement from the council said it will “continue to investigate options to include other venues across the municipality” for use as potential vaccination sites. At present, most GPs can only vaccinate 10 people per day in their clinics because of their size, but using the council’s larger facilities allows them to vaccinate more people. Wyndham mayor and healthy city portfolio holder Adele Hegedich said the high-volume program would dramatically increase the

speed at which the community is vaccinated. Cr Hegedich said that Astra Zeneca would be the only vaccine available at the council vaccination facilities. She said residents the council sites would not be public walk-in facilities and that patients would need to book in for a vaccination through their GP’s office. “Vaccinations are our best way out of

lockdowns and out of this pandemic,” Cr Hegedich said. Patients who attended Encore Events Centre on Thursday were greeted by a humanoid robot named Pepper. The 120-centimetre tall robot, developed by SoftBank Robotics, is normally used at the Wyndham Tech School, hosted by Victoria University, to help students learn coding. However, a meeting between Wyndham Tech School director Gail Bray and Dr Joe Garra from MyClinic Werribee Village led to the idea of using Pepper at the new vaccination hub. Pepper can be programmed to greet people, ask questions and provide information, the same way a medical receptionist would. Ms Bray said that in doing so, Pepper freed up medical staff to do other tasks. “This is a great example of how the Wyndham Tech School and Victoria University Polytechnic collaborate with the community while giving students opportunities to work on real-world projects that will help them when they enter the workforce,” Ms Bray said.

More troops patrol streets Up to 160 extra Australian Defence Force members have been deployed to monitor COVID-19 quarantine, bringing the total number to 412. Members are drawn from across the state, including a contingent from RAAF Base Williams at Laverton. The move is part of Operation COVID-19 Assist to support the Department of Health

with the Household Engagement Program. ADF members will visit close contacts and returned travellers to ensure they are aware of their status, and to provide information and support services while in isolation. Before deployment, members were mobilised rapidly from across the state and concentrated at Simpson Barracks in Melbourne where they were trained, equipped and prepared

for their tasks. The members are drawn from Victorian elements of all three services, including 108 members from army’s 4th Brigade. There are a further 252 ADF members already deployed in Victoria on Operation COVID-19 Assist, supporting the COVID Quarantine Victoria program.

Clinic expands Pfizer roll-out A Laverton Commonwealth Vaccination Clinic this week starts administering second doses of Pfizer. Cohealth at Laverton Community Hub was one of the first CVCs in Victoria administering Pfizer, as well as AstraZeneca. Cohealth medical assistant director Ashley Nind said the clinic started administering Pfizer on May 19. “We were given 120 doses a week to start with … when we started the Therapeutic Goods Administration guidance was that it could only be kept thawed,” he said. “Pfizer’s normally kept at an ultra-cool temperature and then there’s a period of time when it can be kept in a normal temperature. “We actually receive it at a refrigerated temperature, so we keep it at between two to eight degrees. “The TGA guidance when we started was that the Pfizer could only be kept at that thawed temperature or that normal fridge temperature for five days. “TGA have updated their guidance … and it can now be kept at 31 days at that thawed temperature. It increases our capacity to receive more doses.” Mr Nind said there was currently a two-week wait for Pfizer vaccination appointments, with the clinic operating seven days a week and specifically for Pfizer on weekends. The Department of Health said it was working to expand the delivery of COVID-19 vaccines by giving CVCs access to Pfizer following revised guidelines from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation. “The department is taking a steady roll-out approach given limited supply, dual vaccine delivery model, vaccine complexities and will be increasing the number of CVCs administering Pfizer in addition to AstraZeneca over the coming months,” a spokesperson said. Awards for local heroes By Alesha Capone Former police officer Ron Fenton, who died in April following a long battle with cancer, is one of three Wyndham residents to be awarded a medal of the Order of Australia in this year’s Queen’s Birthday honours list. Mr Fenton worked as a police officer for more than 40 years, both before and after he survived being shot in the head during 1984 while pursuing a man who had murdered a security guard. Mr Fenton later developed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and became a passionate advocate for better mental health support for police and veterans. He was a volunteer veteran peer support officer and involved with implementing the PTSD Assistance Dogs/Prison Inmate Training Scheme for police and first responders in Victoria. Werribee resident Lynne Killeen has been awarded a medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her service to the indigenous community and women. Mrs Killeen, originally from the Northern Territory, has been an Aboriginal wellbeing officer at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre (DPFC) for 25 years. She has been involved with establishing an Elders Visiting Program and Koori Health Nurse Pilot Program, and has created a partnership with Elizabeth Hoffman House for family violence counselling programs. Mrs Killeen said she enjoyed showing women at the DPFC that someone cares about and respects them. “I love what I do and I think everyone knows that,” she said. “For the most part, it’s just being able to help somebody, often the women have gone through a lot of trauma, difficulty and

sadness. The funny thing is sometimes I can learn as much from them as they do from me. “I don’t do it for the accolades, or for thanks – if you get a thank you at the end of the day, that’s worth a million dollars.” Mrs Killeen said she has been fortunate to have great general managers, governors, officers and colleagues at DPFC. Point Cook’s Nevil Knell, 85, has been a volunteer with Prison Fellowship Australia (PFA) for more than 28 years.

The PFA aims to help prisoners and their families both inside and outside of jail across the state. A member of Point Cook Community Baptist Church, Mr Knell said that in addition to chatting to prisoners about the bible, he talks to them about topics such as football or weather. “I’m still in touch with three or four men who have been out (of prison) for years,” he said. Mr Knell said his family was “very happy and excited” about his OAM recognition.

Sting targets organised crime Police have arrested two men, and seized cash and drugs, in Wyndham as part of a worldwide investigation led by the Australian Federal Police. Operation Ironside, involved hundreds of search warrants executed across the nation last week. The three-year operation involved federal police and their FBI counterparts in the US covertly intercepting millions of messages from the encrypted phone app ‘AN0M’, which was being used by key underworld figures to co-ordinate major drug-related crime. Within Victoria, Operation Ironside has led to 49 offenders being charged, 411 kilograms of drugs and $16.8 million of cash seized and 37 firearms and weapons being found. Five murder plots have also allegedly been disrupted. Police carried out search warrants in more than 50 Melbourne suburbs last Tuesday including in Point Cook, Seabrook, Werribee, Laverton North, Tarneit, Williams Landing, Brooklyn and Footscray. In Tarneit, Victoria Police detected a quantity of what are believed to be steroids. A 29-year-old man was arrested and has been released pending summons. In Williams Landing, a large quantity of cash was seized. A 31-year-old man was arrested before being released pending further inquiries. Alesha Capone

East Werribee ‘fire sale’ fears By Alesha Capone Wyndham council and a state MP fear land earmarked for the East Werribee National Employment and Innovation Cluster will be developed for housing. Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich last week called on the state government to provide certainty on its plans for the 775-hectare Princes Highway site, which she labelled a “missed opportunity”. “We need the state government to work with council and prioritise decisions around the

future of the site,” Cr Hegedich said. About six years ago, a consortium seeking to build a $31 billion education city on more than 400 hectares of the East Werribee precinct was selected by the state government as the preferred bidder for the site. It was estimated that 58,300 jobs could be created at the education city. However, in 2019 the state stopped the Expressions of Interest process for East Werribee and has since refused to reveal why. Cr Mia Shaw said she was concerned the East Werribee site could be used predominantly for

housing, rather than job creation. “We don’t need housing in this precinct area,” Cr Shaw said. “It must be retained as a National Employment and Innovation Cluster as set out in Plan Melbourne and must be prioritised as recommended by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning. “No funding was allocated to East Werribee in the state government budget and nearly 10 years since the structure plan was completed, it predominantly remains undeveloped and isn’t a priority site for the current state government.”

Speaking in Parliament last month, Western region metropolitan MP Bernie Finn called on the state government not to sell the land set aside for the East Werribee National Employment and Innovation Cluster. “There is very real concern by senior people in the Wyndham area that the government is preparing to sell the land – a fire sale, if you will – for housing and to consign the Werribee East precinct as a piece of history that never will be,” Mr Finn said. The state government did not respond to a request for comment.

Walk and talk for men The “normal blokes” of Wyndham are being encouraged to participate in an initiative that aims to support men’s physical, social and mental health. Local resident Craig Emery is bringing The Man Walk to Werribee this weekend, depending on pandemic restrictions. The Man Walk started in 2018 in Kiama, New South Wales and has grown into an international movement, giving men aged 16 and over an opportunity to walk and talk in a positive and inclusive environment. Mr Emery said he first came across The Man Walk after seeing a social media post about a Geelong walk. “I was intrigued about what it actually was and did some research around the concept and thought it would be a great initiative to introduce to the local community,” he said. The first Werribee walk will take place on Saturday at 7.30am, starting and ending at

Notorious Espresso in Watton Street. The walk will take in Wyndham Park and Chirnside Park. “It will be great to get the initiative off the ground – everything has to start from somewhere, even if it is just a couple of walkers that will be great,” Mr Emery said. He said that Man Walk participants did not have to discuss deep topics if they felt reluctant to. “Any way that allows men to feel comfortable, in an environment to chat, is what appeals about the walk – there is no pressure to turn up, no pressure to talk about anything, just an opportunity if they wish to take it,” he said. Man jailed for manslaughter By Benjamin Millar A Pentland Hills man has been jailed for nine years over the manslaughter death of a Werribee man following an aborted drug deal. Damien Russell Janson, 32, must serve at least six years of his sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter in relation to the death of 23-year-old Jake Smith on May 20 last year. The Supreme Court last month heard Janson was a front seat passenger in a ute when he grabbed the steering wheel and forced the vehicle to veer onto the wrong side of the

road, directly into the path of Smith, who was riding a motorbike coming from the opposite direction. The collision occurred about 10 minutes after an aborted drug transaction in Bacchus Marsh between Janson and a friend of Smith. Janson had met the friend about six months earlier when they were both in prison. He repeatedly contacted the man in the week leading up to the death asking for MDMA. The man eventually agreed and travelled with Smith and some other friends via car and motorbikes to Bacchus Marsh.

bush. Smith sustained extensive injuries from which he eventually died. Janson fled the scene but handed himself into police two days later. He was initially charged with murder, but following negotiations with the prosecution pleaded guilty to manslaughter by unlawful and dangerous act when the murder charge was dropped. Justice Elizabeth Hollingworth said she accepted Janson’s judgment may have been clouded by lack of sleep and ‘ice’ use over previous days, but those are not mitigating factors.

The group met Janson and another friend at the 7-Eleven service station on Main Street in Bacchus Marsh then drove to another location about one kilometre along Main Street. An argument broke out and Janson and the drug contact drew weapons. The contact drove off and Smith and another friend followed on their motorbikes. The two groups met up a few minutes later in Maddingley, driving in opposite directions. Janson grabbed the steering wheel and caused the ute to veer into Smith and his motorbike, throwing the victim about 20 metres into the

Power to the people Wyndham Park Community Centre is offering to help residents experiencing financial hardship to access the state government’s $250 Power Saving Bonus. The bonus provides eligible Victorians with a one-off payment, to assist them with the costs of living during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning has engaged Neighbourhood Houses Victoria (NHV) in partnership with Good Shepherd to help spread word about the Power Saving Bonus. NHV chief executive Nicole Battle said the pandemic has exacerbated existing poverty, with many people losing work or income as a result of Victoria’s lockdowns. “This bonus offers some financial relief for these community members, many of whom have to choose whether they can pay their next electricity bill or put food on the table,” she said.

Staff at the Wyndham Park Community Centre in Werribee, which is part of the Neighbourhood House Co-ordination Program, can help residents complete an online application for the Power Saving Bonus Centre manager Greg Ferrington said there were plenty of people in the community who have never used a computer, or who lack the confidence and skills to do something such as submitting an application online. “We don’t want this to be a barrier to them accessing the $250 payment, so we are available to step them through the process, and make sure they aren’t left behind,” Mr Ferrington said. To be eligible for the Power Saving Bonus, applicants must hold a pensioner concession card or receive JobSeeker, Austudy, Abstudy or Youth Allowance. Retirement living and aged care provider TriCare has recently commenced construction on a new aged care facility Williams Landing. (Supplied)

Aged care closer to home The first stage of a residential aged care facility being constructed in Williams Landing is set to create up to 140 new jobs once fully operational. TriCare, which owns and operates 24 retirement villages and aged care sites across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, will operate the Williams Landing facility. The centre, to be located at 16 Charsworth Way, will have 126 beds across four levels. Construction of stage one will be completed by Total Construction and is expected to be operational by late next year. Property development company Cedar Woods, which is building Williams Landing as a suburb, has welcomed the aged care home. Cedar Woods chief operating officer Patrick Archer said: “Job creation is extremely important in growing communities so projects

like this present a great benefit for local aged care workers who want to work close to home.” Mr Archer said projects such as TriCare Williams Landing also provided essential facilities for the ageing population of greater Wyndham. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the over-65 population of Wyndham is expected to triple in the next 20 years. “Locals who have lived in the area with their families for decades deserve high quality facilities close to home,” Mr Archer said. “This facility will keep them within the community they know.” TriCare Williams Landing will have communal and private dining areas and lounges, a wine bar, a café, in-house cinema and salon and a glass conservatory.

Rise of the Aussie playmaker From a production company in Kyneton, a new documentary that traces the legacy of American influence on Australian men’s basketball is set to be released later this year, writes Oliver Lees.

roducer Chris Appleby said it was a single game that convinced him of the need to create this project, entitled Imported. “It all came to a head when team USA came to Australia for those exhibition games at Marvel Stadium,” Appleby said. “After we beat them in the second game, I suddenly thought to myself, how did we get to this point where we can beat them at their own game?” Appleby sat in the crowd as one of more than 52,000 people packed into Marvel Stadium to watch Boomers guard Patty Mills lead the team to a historic four point victory. That day, August 29, 2019, was the first time the Boomers had beaten the United States, a history of more than 50 years of defeat. With a lifetime involved in basketball, Appleby has been able to draw on a long list of contacts to bring his idea to life. Appleby had his own brief professional basketball career in the late 1980s, developing his skills at the Australian Institute of Sport before playing two seasons for the now defunct NBL side the Canberra Cannons. He then went on to build a career in sports journalism, working for basketball magazines Australian Basketball and ONE on ONE, before landing a job at the Herald Sun in the ’90s. He also worked in the US, covering the NBA for the New York Post and producing content for the Miami Heat pregame show. Appleby said the ’80s and ’90s were the crucial periods that built the foundation of Australian basketball, and is therefore the focus of the documentary.

“The ’80s was a rocking time for the NBL, the Americans started to come over and were real show-stoppers.” he said. “But it was the 1990s when the game really took off. I think about when the Boomers played the USA in a warm-up match before the 1996 Olympics. That ’96 team was on the cusp of greatness. “Shane Heal was on fire, I don’t think the Americans realised he had such deep range. “He and Charles Barkely came together at one point, and Shane didn’t take too kindly to the treatment. “It sent a message, that you might beat us, but we’ll go down swinging.”

Since Luc Longley became the first Australian player to be drafted to the NBA in 1991, 24 others have followed in his footsteps. That includes seven Australian players in the current NBA season, a record number for Australian representation. Appleby has interviewed many of Australia’s pioneering players and coaches for the documentary, including Heal, Longley, Andrew Gaze, Dave Simmons, Leonard Copeland and Andrew Bogut. Appleby said the project shines a light on the stories that show how Australian basketball has developed. “One that stood out to me was Brett Brown coaching Simmons in the NBL and then years later coaching his son, Ben, at the 76ers,” he said. “I mean, really you can’t write this stuff.” “To see a coach and a family connected across the NBL and the NBA is a perfect example of what this project is about. “It’s really going to be a great document on what influence Americans have had on our players and coaches.” The documentary will also look at how Australia has emerged as a destination for US basketball talent. While travelling across the US in 2019 to film parts of the project, Appleby visited former Melbourne Tiger Daryl McDonald’s childhood home in New York. McDonald, or D-Mac, was born in Harlem in New York City and made a reputation for himself playing on public courts. After playing college basketball with the aim

of reaching the NBA, D-Mac was recruited by Brown to play for the North Melbourne Giants in 1994. McDonald went on to build a career in the NBL that spanned 14 years as a player and continues today as an assistant coach. “Daryl McDonald is the most unique American talent to ever play here, and it just goes to show the incredible pathway Australia has become for Americans,” Appleby said. “Playing in Australia saved his life, he grew up in a very tough area and it could have gone either way for him. His brother said he wasn’t allowed to play on the court on the next block because there was so much violence. “Now he’s brought his entire family [to Australia] and has been here almost 30 years.” Appleby said the legacy of the ’80s and ’90s has helped create a team that could challenge for a medal at the Olympics later this year. “We should do really well, hopefully all our NBA talent will play,” he said. “Australians are just getting bigger and better.” With 90 per cent of production completed on Imported, Appleby has launched a crowdfunding campaign to get the project over the line. Like many industries, Appleby’s Appstarmedia company has had its production capabilities hamstrung by COVID-19. MY WYNDHAM An artwork created by Werribee South resident Xiang Li was awarded the $5000 acquisitive Local Emerging Art Prize (LEAP) in the 2021 Wyndham Art Prize last month. Ms Li chats with Alesha Capone. How did you feel to receive the LEAP award? This was a big surprise for me. I was very, very shocked when I heard my name announced. I have to say, I’m still very excited. As a self-taught, emerging artist, it was something I wouldn’t have dreamed of 3 and a half years ago. It was such an amazing experience, it means the work will be kept in Wyndham City’s contemporary art collection. What did you enjoy about putting together your winning artwork? It features three jars of water I drove around and collected from Werribee River. Wyndham council, sponsored by the art program Wunder Gym, gave me the opportunity to work with Werribee River riverkeeper John Forrester, he talked about the river and its history, and also Dr Teresa Mackintosh. I planned to collect water from each end of the river when lockdown ended, but I could only do so within 25 kilometres. I saw lots of rubbish along the river, which really upset me. But making the work was a very enjoyable process, there was so much thinking behind it. My cat was very sick at the time, so I was very worried. Collecting items from along the river made me feel like life was still flowing. I actually really loved the work when it was done, because the simplicity reminds me of Chinese art and my heritage. Do you enjoy any other activities on the river? I enjoy kayaking on Werribee River, once I kayaked for six hours. I actually paint Werribee River quite a bit, especially near where I live. I do go around and pick up rubbish on my own, I do get very angry when I see rubbish thrown on the beautiful beach.

How did you first become an artist, and how does being creative help your mental health? I purchased a box of watercolours. They were on sale and I loved the colours, so I bought them. I never expected to go this far. I started out painting and I really enjoyed it, first with flowers and then I tried landscapes. I entered the 2019 Wyndham Art Prize and was named as a finalist. Painting helps me to express my feelings and what I cannot say. How long you have lived in Werribee South and what do you like about the area? I moved to Werribee South in early 2015, I absolutely love the area. It’s just a minute’s walk to the oceanfront. Any time I feel upset or trapped I go to the waterfront. Werribee River is right there and I feel privileged in lockdown to have such a beautiful view. I feel very safe, especially in the community here, all the neighbours are close to each other and support each other, it’s very nice. Would you like to add anything else? I feel, as an emerging artist, especially self-taught, there will be a lot of challenges. It is wonderful there will always be someone there who is willing to support and hear your voice, such as Wyndham council and the Wyndham Art Gallery giving me the opportunity to exhibit in 2019 – without them I wouldn’t be where I am today. I want to thank Megan Evans (an artist and curator at the Wyndham Cultural Centre), Trisha Carlon (a Wyndham council arts development officer) and Clive, a local artist. Megan mentored me a lot, Clive could see my potential.

New taxes bad timing: HIA “Rising property taxes announced by the Victorian government will hurt Victorian home buyers,” stated HIA executive director Fiona Nield. The government announced on May 15 that it will be increasing land tax and stamp duty rates on certain property transactions, along with a new ‘windfall gain’ tax on some land where rezoning has provided an uplift in property values. “It is unfair to be taxing land owners further on property when Victoria already has the highest stamp duty rates in the country. “It is also short-sighted to be adding a greater tax burden on housing when it already contributes up to half of the state’s revenue each year. Equally the activity generated from residential development supports jobs and economic activity and is key to supporting all Victorians as the state recovers from the economic shock of COVID-19. “New taxes like these are passed on in higher land prices for all and stamp duty inhibits people from selling properties to allow for new homes to be built – it has direct impact on new housing affordability. “Changing the goal posts after property has been purchased is unfair. It seems this will particularly impact in regional Victoria – as some urban growth land in Melbourne

may be exempted. “The new windfall gain tax is particularly concerning and appears to take a disproportionate share of property value from landowners that are in fact helping to support the growth in housing supply that helps keep affordability in check across regional Victoria,” Ms Nield said. “These increasing taxes will impact land prices and home buyers at all levels at a time when housing affordability has fallen, particularly in the regions.” HIA’s latest housing affordability data shows that Victorian housing affordability deteriorated in late 2020 and early 2021 – especially in the regions. This was driven by a surge in dwelling prices over these six months while average weekly earnings stagnated. “These new taxes will dampen demand for housing at the wrong time for Victoria. With HomeBuilder ending and immigration unlikely to return for some time, making this type of decision now will put further pressure on an already declining demand.”

Community at the heart of Wyndham Grange “Our next exciting project is to create a new barbecue area for residents to enjoy.” One of these projects was the new dance floor. A dinner dance recently made good use of this new feature and was such a hit with residents, Lynn says it’s now going to be an annual event. “We had a live band and it was such a fabulous night, we are adding it to our calendar of events so we can do it every year.” The calendar is a busy one, with plenty of activities each month. There’s the Simply Singing choir, a Girls’ Talk high tea, R U OK men’s group, movie nights and a range of seasonal activities and outings to join. As well as the Clubhouse, facilities include an indoor pool, gym, bowling green, beauty salon, workshop, vegie garden, study, arts and crafts room, library, billiard and games room and there’s a village bus. The facilities are impressive, but it’s community spirit that sits at the heart of Wyndham Grange and the past year has only highlighted this. “It was just wonderful to see how everyone pulled together during COVID,” Lynn says. “We had socially-distanced drinks and coffee, played Celebrity Heads across driveways and marked Anzac Day with the driveway salute. “I think we were even more social during this time because we all wanted to check on people and make sure they were doing OK.” NOTE: There are six villas currently available with prices ranging from $390,000-$399,000. Social Club president Lynn Slade works with a democratically elected committee of nine to ensure village projects are on the go, events run smoothly – and most importantly – there is plenty of socialising and fun to be had by Wyndham Grange residents. “We have a licensed bar, run by residents all with the correct RSA qualifications, and our Happy Hours on Friday and Sunday evenings are popular,” Lynn says. “Residents can hire the bar and dining area for private functions, and even use the kitchen to get creative. “We also have a resident-run coffee shop and the funds raised from these activities are put back into village projects for residents to enjoy.” The recent Doggy Day event had smiles and tails wagging all round as residents enjoyed a hot dog lunch complete with puppachinos, pupcakes and bone bickies for dessert. The four-legged family members showed off their tricks and prizes were given for the biggest, smallest and cutest canines, with the ‘dog looking most like its owner’ segment generating a few giggles. “It was a close call for the smallest dog category, but after a measure from the judges, Jack was announced the winner,” Lynn says. “It was lots of fun and we even had residents borrowing dogs from neighbours or family so they could get involved.” Werribee Obedience Dog Club had an area set up for the guests of honour and Shelley The Pet Stylist was kept busy with pooch pampering. Lynn says there is a collaborative approach to village projects and the committee is always keen to get everyone involved. “We consult residents on ideas and together decide what we’re going to do next,” she says.

The CVT has an interesting feature Nissan calls Smooth Start Assist. This irons out any accelerator pressure imperfections caused by the driver, or rough roads thus giving a smooth and fuel-efficient drive. Safety systems include front, side and curtains; ABS brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist; traction control and vehicle dynamic control. There are more Nissan dealers in country and remote areas than is usual in this class as big brother Nissan Patrol is popular in the bush. Servicing and spare parts prices are about average for this class. Not all spares for Pulsars are stocked in remoter areas of Australia but can generally be delivered within a few days of being needed. Nissan Pulsars are often owned by conservative drivers, with the possible exception of the sporty SSS, so insurance rates tend to be lower than average. Shop around for the best quote, be sure that you’re comparing

apples with apples.

What to look for Make sure to have a full pre-purchase inspection. If the any faults are found say you won’t buy the car until they have been rectified. We’ve heard of Pulsars that have always been parked outdoors having dashtop plastic going hard and cracking. Check the other plastics that are exposed to the sun as they may also have the trouble. CVT autos sound different to conventional automatic transmissions. If the ratio doesn’t seem right for the driving you’re doing, and/or they are noisy, have an expert check it out. Do the usual standard checks for damage to the wheels and tyres, the front-lefts are usually the ones to suffer. An engine that doesn’t start within a couple of seconds may need a tune-up, or have issues. Call a mechanic to inspect it. There have been quite a few recalls on

Nissan Pulsar was a big seller in Australia from its introduction way back in 1980. It was called Nissan Tiida from 2006 until 2012, then Pulsar again until 2018 when it fell victim to the SUV craze and was discontinued. During these missing years several quality cars were introduced and Pulsar didn’t manage to regain its major place on the market. Another factor for its reduced sales number was the increasing buyer interest in SUVs as these were no longer 4WDs but rather practical family machines. Nissan had been a strong player in 4WDs / SUVs for decades with Patrol, Qashqai, X-Trail and Juke, and the Pulsar lost sales to them. Initially only Pulsar four-door sedans were imported, a five-door hatch arrived six months later. Model range is Nissan ST, ST-L, ST-S and Ti, as well as the sporty SSS. Pulsar’s rear-seat legroom is good and they can carry two adults in reasonable comfort, three with less of a squeeze than you might expect. The boot is very good in the hatch and positively cavernous in the sedan. Long distance cruising on Australian country roads had always been a feature of Nissan Pulsars and the new model of 2013 continued that tradition. A stiff body structure not only offer good crash protection, but also minimises vibration. Mechanical and road noise have been isolated by extensive use of sound absorbing materials. A 1.8-litre engine is used in the standard models, with the topline Ti and SSS getting a 1.6-litre turbocharged unit. The six-speed manual gearbox didn’t sell particularly well, most buyers opt for an Xtronic continuously variable transmission. Naturally there are more manuals in the sporty SSS.

Hoppers appoints new coaches By Alesha Capone Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club has appointed a new batting coach and assistant coach for its senior side ahead of the upcoming season. Ajay Bhatt has been announced as specialist batting coach, level two coach and First XI player, while Craig Swan will take on the rol of assistant coach. Bhatt comes to the HCCC after serving as a captain and coach for Carnegie the past two years, following a move to the western suburbs. Hoppers Crossing director of coaching, Steve Frenkel, said that in addition to helping with batting skills, Bhatt has an impressive focus and determination which he can impart to senior players. “After chatting to him, we realised we’ve got someone pretty special with his mindset and how he approaches the game,” Frenkel said. Swan has been welcomed back to the HCCC following a successful stint at Altona. Frenkel described Swan as a “stalwart” of cricket in the west and a “fantastic appointment” given his long-standing connection to HCCC, where he also played with the veterans’ team last year. “It’s great for the club to have someone of his calibre,” Frenkel said. Frenkel said that he, Hoppers Crossing head coach Anthony Williams and Bhatt have already decided on a structure to help players with their pre-season training. “We will look for areas we could improve in and also celebrate our achievements as a club,” Frenkel said. “We’re just looking to improve and bring some further development to players, and the results will come together and show for themselves. “We hope that’s a good formula for success.”

SPORT United Tarneit Sports Club raises the bat United Tarneit Sports Club has grown in leaps and bounds since being established nine years ago and is continuing to bring players from diverse backgrounds together to enjoy cricket. The UTSC is affiliated to Cricket Victoria under the Western Suburbs Churches & Community Cricket Association, Mid Year Cricket Association (MYCA) and Western Region Junior Cricket Association (WRJCA) for young players. President and founding member Devan Ranaweera said that in May 2012, when the UTSC started out as a group of friends playing cricket together, they struggled to put together one team. But the next year they grew to three teams, and last year the club boasted 10 teams – four

- Devan Ranaweera senior sides and six junior sides. “We are very multicultural, we have players from India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Australia, which was the aim of our name – as United Tarneit Sports Club, we want to unite people from all cultures – and we have had a lot of success in that way,” Ranaweera said. “On any given day on a Saturday, there are more than 120 people representing the club in

some way – whether it is playing, volunteering or helping the kids. “We are going from strength to strength.” Two UTSC players, Indika Massalage and Rajitha Mendis, have been selected to play for MYCA state team this year. Last month, two junior players, Seth and Barghav, received WRJCA awards. Ranaweera said Wyndham council has also provided UTSC with “a great facility” on Wootten Road. “Council have been great and the whole recreational team have been great,” he said. Ranaweera said UTSC has a good relationship with Tarneit Titans Football Club, with whom they share the Wootten Road facility.

He said UTSC hopes to in the future play turf cricket and have more professional training, including for junior players. “One day, you never know, perhaps one of our juniors will play high-level cricket,” he said. Big dreams for Tokyo By Alesha Capone Track and field athlete Amy Cashin is hopeful that she will represent Australia in the Tokyo Olympics. Cashin, 26, grew up in Werribee and competed with Western Athletics. She moved to the United States to study at West Virginia University, where she now coaches and is working towards her Ph.D. in coaching and teaching studies. “It sounds cliche as I feel almost every athlete will say it, however one of the reasons I moved to America to attend college and remain there as a professional was the goal of making the Olympics,” she said. “My coach back in Australia, Burkie [Peter Burke], has always encouraged me and he and my parents helped me find the right college that would set me up to hopefully one day make an Olympics team, while also getting an education.” It looks promising that Cashin – whose

signature event is the three-kilometre women’s steeplechase – will achieve her Olympic dream this year. Cashin competed in Portland, Oregon earlier this month, where she shaved 15 seconds off her personal best to achieve a finishing time of 9:28.60 minutes, making her the fifth-fastest Australian ever in the event. The Olympic qualifying standard time for the three-kilometre women’s steeplechase is 9:30 minutes. Cashin said that while the Portland result puts her in “a good position” to be selected to represent Australia at the Olympics, it remains to be seen how the other Aussie hopefuls fare ahead of July. “Until I know for sure I will continue to train hard and get in a few races/time trials in hopes I will be selected,” Cashin said. Cashin said that when the COVID-19 pandemic first broke out, she did not do a lot of racing or travelling because of her anxiety

surrounding the virus and wanting to play her part to stop it spreading. “After I got the vaccination I felt more comfortable to get to a few races while still taking precautions,” she said. The young athlete said that if she is chosen for the Olympics, her goals are to make it out of the semi-finals and run a strong solid race that she can be proud of. “If I am selected I am looking forward to having the opportunity to race against the world’s best and represent all those that have supported and believed in me,” she said. Cashin said that while she lives in the US, Werribee was always in her thoughts. “Werribee is always home for me and where I first fell in love with the sport,” she said. “I want to say thank you to everyone who had always been supportive of me and believed in me. “I’m very lucky and fortunate and hope that if I am selected for the games I can represent my home well.”

Western United FC is on the hunt for a new A-League coach after parting ways with inaugural coach Mark Rudan. Western United chairman Jason Sourasis thanked Rudan for his leadership and dedication over the past two years. He said the two parties had decided that a change of direction was needed and the club would reset its on-field objectives in order to meet longer term ambitions. “Mark departs Western United with our utmost respect for all his hard work and contribution in establishing the foundation of the club’s elite football program,” Sourasis said. “Also, as a start-up professional sporting club, we are greatly appreciative of Mark’s efforts in helping build the Western United brand and spreading the green and black message in the community.” After making finals in their debut season, United struggled this season, finishing 10th. Rudan said his time at United had been rewarding, both personally and professionally. “I’m thankful for some amazing relationships I have made since coming to Melbourne and coaching at this great club. “I am really proud of what this group has achieved over only two seasons despite all the challenges COVID has thrown up. “This sport is special and it wouldn’t be anything without our fans. I truly believe in the vision of Western United which will redefine the football landscape when it builds its stadium in Melbourne’s west. Barlow happy with season start By Tara Murray It has been an overwhelmingly positive start to Michael Barlow’s coaching career at Werribee. After dropping its first two matches, Werribee took the points in its past three to get the momentum going. While that has been halted due to a COVID-19 lockdown, Barlow and his team continue to work hard behind the scenes. Barlow said this season had been a learning curve for himself. “It’s consuming, but very satisfying,” he said. “The way I like to coach is that I take the win-loss out of it as much as I can. You can’t be dictated by wins and losses. “It’s never as bad or good as it seems. The last month has been a bit of a road block and in the modern world you can’t take anything for granted. “We probably anticipated this was a possibility. “In terms of what we’ve done from a playing stand point, moulding the squad, new coaching dynamic, it’s been overwhelmingly positive.” Barlow, who was a playing assistant coach with the club the past two seasons, said the group had started to put together some good results on field. He said the standout for him had been the effort the group put into not only games, but training as well. “They are a group I haven’t got angry at essentially,” he said. “We lost our first two games and in terms of effort the players put in, it was unquestionable. We nearly gassed ourselves from trying too hard. “You literally look at them at the end of the game and you’re in awe of the effort they have given, but we are a little bit frustrated with some of the method and execution. “That all comes down to the continuity of training and playing together.” Barlow said looking at their key performance indicators this season, they were pretty similar to 2019, when the club

played finals. He said there had been plenty of standouts for the side this season, with the club using just 27 players in the first five rounds. Werribee returned to training on Saturday and is hoping to return to the ﬁeld this week. It will be another challenge, with clubs interstate able to play throughout Victoria’s latest lockdown and AFL-listed players being able to train the whole time. “We draw on that as a point of difference,” Barlow said. “It can be perceived as a point of disadvantage but we like to think we have a hard edge and blue collar operation. “We embraced that.”
