A voice for change By Goya Dmytryshchak Williamstown’s Keran Howe’s life changed when she was 19 – and she has devoted the rest of her life to helping others. On Monday, she was recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours with an Order of Australia Medal for service to people with a disability. “My background is in social work, so I’ve worked for many years in both hospitals and community health, and I also have a disability as the result of a car accident when I was 19,” she said. “I was a nurse and I was on a weekend trip to the country with some of my nursing colleagues – training nurses, we were.

“We just had a very simple accident and the car rolled over. “We hit a tree. “As a result, I had a fractured spine, fractured ribs. “I have spinal cord injuries, so I use a wheelchair. “As a result of that, I took a great interest in the rights of people with disabilities and the fact that people with disabilities don’t have the same opportunities or work to make a contribution to be recognised for their skills. “In particular, as a woman, I was interested in the issues that confront women with disabilities that weren’t always recognised by the broader disability advocacy movement.” In 2006, Ms Howe became the founding chief executive of Women with Disabilities Victoria – a role she held until she retired in 2018. “I’m still very involved as a consultant,” she said. “More recently, I was providing training around the National Disability Insurance Scheme for family violence and sexual assault workers. “So, I still retain an interest in that area of violence against women. “I also am involved on a working party establishing the National Disability Research Partnership so I’ve been really interested in

getting the evidence that we need to advocate for improved recognition of people with disabilities and women with disabilities.” Ms Howe said she had “great concerns” about the NDIS. “I think that this government seems intent on

restricting access, restricting how people might have choice and control, which is the mantra of the NDIS – that it’s to give people choice and control in the way they can utilise services – but what I see is that it’s becoming more restricted. “There’s still a long way to go in terms of

the recognition of the rights of people with disabilities and I’ve been really privileged to work with some fantastic, skilled people in advocating for those rights.” ■ More

A nod to outstanding service Goya Dmytryshchak shares the stories of some of this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours recipients

Lynda Ford Yarraville entrepreneur Lynda Ford has been named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for service to Victoria’s multicultural community. Ms Ford is also known for founding Squirrls (pronounced squirrels) pickpocket-proof travel underwear, before manufacturing face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Along with Squirrl and entrepreneurship work, Ms Ford has been an intercultural cities expert with the Council of Europe since 2016. “My role is around, you’ve got a multicultural society, how do you make sure that those different cultures are coming together to learn from each other, to run businesses together, to become friends,” she said. “It’s really much about social inclusion and social cohesion, so making sure that society over time doesn’t fragment. “The best way to do that is to let different cultures come together for different reasons. “It could be something as simple as a barbecue in the neighbourhood or it could be all the way through to federal government policies around making sure that organisations are including everybody.” Ms Ford said she wanted to acknowledge her mother, Helen Ford, in receiving her award. “She’s been a single parent since 1975,” she said. “She made sure my sister and I were educated and had opportunities in life, and I think that foundation and that basis has really given me the ability to take opportunities as they come up but also to be able to do the work, because I had a really good basis for acceptance of other people.”

Patricia ‘Pat’ Daw Williamstown’s Patricia ‘Pat’ Daw has been awarded an OAM for service to badminton. Western Suburbs Badminton Association honorary president since 1989, Ms Daw has served in numerous roles with Badminton Victoria and was a tournament volunteer with Badminton Australia. She has been the association’s event director for national junior badminton carnivals since 1989 and was volunteer manager of Altona Badminton Centre from 1993-2000. Ms Daw became a member of the then Victorian Badminton Association Council in the 1960s and is a life member of Badminton Victoria, serving as secretary since 2013. “It was a family thing,” Ms Daw said. “My parents were both involved for many years. “When the opportunity came up, I was asked to be president. “I have devoted the next 30 years of my life to it.” Ms Daw said it was exciting to be named in the Queen’s Birthday honours. “It’s pretty exciting isn’t it,” she said. “My family will be more excited than I am.”

A Williamstown architect who opposed high-rise development on the former Port Phillip Woollen Mill site has been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. Shelley Penn has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to architecture and design in the public realm, and to professional institutes. Ms Penn is an associate professor in architecture at Melbourne University, adjunct professor at Monash University and has owned her own business since 1993. She is a former national president of the Australian Institute of Architects, one of many pro-bono roles undertaken, and has worked in multiple government advisory roles. Ms Penn is known as a strong advocate for high quality public places. In 2010, Ms Penn, late former premier Joan Kirner and then Williamstown MP Wade Noonan made a joint 183-page submission recommending good quality densification but condemning insensitive high-rise development in Nelson Place. The Nelson Place Village proposal for the former Port Phillip Woollen Mill site had included tower blocks up to 13 storeys high. “We made the submission to the state Planning Advisory Committee, who accepted our recommendations on quality controls and height limits [amongst other things], but a change of government meant the new planning minister, Matthew Guy, opted for discretionary rather than the recommended mandatory height limits, and effectively dismissed the quality controls,” Ms Penn said. “Hence the poor design and inappropriate tower heights now built on the site. “It’s a shame because urban consolidation is important but it should be respectful and contributory to its context, and this is not.” (Danielle Savio)

Katrina Gliddon Newport’s Katrina Gliddon has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the international community of Cambodia. In 2010, she founded Mother’s Heart Cambodia, a non-government organisation (NGO) supporting women during a crisis pregnancy. “When girls and women face a crisis pregnancy in Cambodia, the blame and responsibility is solely placed on them,” Ms Gliddon said. “Women are often rejected by their families and the wider social networks, leaving them isolated, unable to return home and without financial and emotional support. “Mother’s Heart empowers women with choices, coming alongside them and offering practical as well as emotional support. Now we have a team of 32 local staff that run the organisation and I’m their fundraiser, donor relations person, advisor, coach and co-chair of the board of directors from here in Melbourne.” Ms Gliddon said she accepted her Queen’s Birthday honour on behalf of the Mother’s Heart team and the girls and women in Cambodia. “I’ve just had so many wonderful people that have believed in our vision,” she said. “I’m going to accept this award for them and I’m going to accept it on behalf of the vulnerable girls and women in our program who find themselves with a crisis pregnancy through rape or trafficking or being exploited or homeless or the most horrible stories. “I thought, they’re the ones that have to make the tough decisions and they’re the ones that I want to hero.”

Maidstone’s John Wightwick planned to help out with Scouts for a few years. More than three decades later, he has received an OAM for service to youth through the Scouts. District Commissioner of Kariwara District since 2012, Mr Wightwick is also leader in charge of 2nd Footscray Scout Group in West Footscray. He has previously been a leader at 4th Altona and 1st Laverton Scout groups. “I started with Scouts 33 years ago because my eldest son decided to join Cubs,” Mr Wightwick said. “I thought, I’ll stay for three years. “I stayed on.” Mr Wightwick said his whole family had become involved in Scouts, which benefited youth and adults alike. “I guess, Scouts for me is just an amazing organisation,” he said. “The youth learn so much in scouting because they learn all sorts of life skills. “We do all the traditional things, all the things that people imagine Scouts do – tie knots and all that sort of stuff; we’re very much about the outdoors, we’re very much about the environment – but very, very importantly for youth is that they learn teamwork, they learn leadership, and it’s just amazing to see people grow. “They’ll come in maybe as a Joey or a Cub Scout and to see them grow, develop – it’s just amazing. “Statistically, youth that join Scouts are less likely to get into strife, basically, because they’re doing something, they’re interested, they’ve got things to look forward to and it’s healthy outdoor [pursuits]. “What I’ve learnt with scouting is extraordinary. “.We’re doing it for the youth but the side benefit is that personally you get a lot out of it as well.”

John Wightwick

Leslie Mather Hoppers Crossing’s Leslie Mather says he doesn’t volunteer for recognition or awards, but because he wants to help people. The “75 going on 50” year-old has been a volunteer visitor guide at Footscray Hospital for almost 25 years while also working in the hospital’s outpatients unit for several years. He retired from the job in July last year, but still volunteers at the hospital. Mr Mather was awarded a medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in recognition of his service to community health. Mr Mather said his parents brought him up to “treat people the way you want to be treated”. “I just found you get so much back from volunteering, it’s incredible,” he said. Mr Mather said he first started volunteering after he was made redundant from the Commonwealth Bank at the age of 50. During his career he managed bank branches in Altona and Footscray. He is a secretary and convenor of the Westgate Region Prostate Cancer Support Group, which formed in 1999 and has served in several other health and cancer-related committees and organisations, including on the Victorian and Tasmanian Prostate Cancer Support Group Chapter Council, which comes under the umbrella of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. In 2011, Mr Mather received a Max Gardner Award for Distinguished Service from the foundation. Paula Benson, who formerly chaired Ovarian Cancer Australia, has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 34 in 2003. “I know I am one of the very lucky ones because my GP did all the right things for me,” Ms Benson said. “When I went to her, I had this unexplained abdominal bloating, changes in my urinary and bowel habits and I felt really full after eating not very much.

“She sent me straight off that morning for a transvaginal ultrasound and she got me in to see a gynaecological oncologist that night and I had the surgery the next week. “No one thought that I would have ovarian cancer because I was young, I was 34 – largely, it’s women in their 50s, 60s, 70s who are diagnosed – and I have no history of ovarian or breast cancer in my family. “So, no one suspected that it could be ovarian cancer; they could see that I had a large cyst attached to one of my ovaries and that the ovary was damaged and that the cyst and the ovary would need to be removed. “When I woke up, my gyne-oncologist told me that she was very sorry but she’d found ovarian cancer and had to undertake a radical hysterectomy. “It was very shocking for a young woman to have that experience but I know my cancer was diagnosed early, it hadn’t spread and I know how lucky I am.” Ms Benson said she knew her story was not typical for most women with ovarian cancer, which prompted her to offer her services to Ovarian Cancer Australia in 2006. One of my girlfriends donated eggs and another girlfriend carried her for me, so I’m very lucky to be a mum.” On learning of her Australia Day recognition, Ms Benson said she hoped it would raise more awareness of ovarian cancer. “When I first found out about it I felt quite

emotional really thinking about everything that we at Ovarian Cancer Australia have achieved over the past decade,” she said. “But I was just reflecting today, the same week that I found out about potentially receiving the award, I heard about another friend of mine who’s just been diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer and it was very grounding. “We’ve achieved so much, we’ve done so much and I’m so proud of that but there is still so much more to do and we can’t rest until it’s

done.” Ovarian Cancer Australia said under Ms Benson’s stewardship the organisation had achieved significant milestones, including developing and implementing Australia’s first national action plan for ovarian cancer research, securing $3 million federal funding for the Traceback ovarian cancer prevention program and the commitment of $20 million for ovarian cancer research from the federal government’s Medical Research Future Fund.

A section of Altona pier broke, boats sunk and diehard surfers made the most of the waves in last week’s wild weather. Wind gusts of 96km/h were recorded over Port Phillip Bay overnight on Wednesday. Parks Victoria district manager Graeme Davis said the pier remained open. “Altona Pier was damaged in the overnight storm, and the low landing has broken away and washed up on the nearby beach,” he said. “We are currently assessing the damage and making the area safe. “For now, the jetty approach up to the first low landing remains open but access may be restricted if changing weather conditions continue to create risks. “We encourage anyone venturing out onto piers and jetties during these extreme weather conditions to take extra care and observe any onsite safety signage and directions.” Rachel Newby photographed the damaged pier on Thursday morning. “On our morning walk, fighting through the winds to the pier this morning, we were greeted by proof Mother Nature shouldn’t be messed with,” she said. “One of the lower levels at the end of the pier had been ripped off. Clinic increases Pfizer roll-out By Goya Dmytryshchak A Laverton Commonwealth Vaccination Clinic this week starts administering second doses of Pfizer. Cohealth at Laverton Community Hub was one of the first CVCs in Victoria administering Pfizer, as well as AstraZeneca. Cohealth medical assistant director Ashley Nind said the clinic started administering Pfizer on May 19. “Initially, we were given a certain allocation of doses,” he said. “We were given 120 doses a week to start with … because when we started the Therapeutic Goods Administration guidance was that it

could only be kept thawed. “Pfizer’s normally kept at an ultra-cool temperature and then there’s a period of time when it can be kept in a normal temperature. “We actually receive it at a refrigerated temperature, so we keep it at between two to eight degrees. “The TGA guidance when we started was that the Pfizer could only be kept at that thawed temperature or that normal fridge temperature for five days. “TGA have updated their guidance on the storage of Pfizer and it can now be kept at 31 days at that thawed temperature. “It increases our capacity to receive more doses.”

Mr Nind said there was currently a two-week wait for Pfizer vaccination appointments, with the clinic operating seven days a week and specifically for Pfizer on weekends. The Department of Health said it was working to expand the delivery of COVID-19 vaccines by giving CVCs access to Pfizer following revised guidelines from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation. “The department is taking a steady roll-out approach given limited supply, dual vaccine delivery model, vaccine complexities and will be increasing the number of CVCs administering Pfizer in addition to AstraZeneca over the coming months,” a spokesperson said.

More troops called in Up to 160 extra Australian Defence Force members have been deployed to monitor COVID-19 quarantine, bringing the total number to 412. Members are drawn from across the state, including a contingent from RAAF Base Williams at Laverton. The move is part of Operation COVID-19 Assist to support the Department of Health with the Household Engagement Program. ADF members will visit close contacts and returned travellers to ensure they are aware of their status, and to provide information and support services while in isolation. Before deployment, members were mobilised rapidly from across the state and concentrated at Simpson Barracks in Melbourne where they were trained, equipped and prepared

for their tasks. The members are drawn from Victorian elements of all three services, including 108 members from army’s 4th Brigade. Most are army reservists. Suspicious car raises alarm By Goya Dmytryshchak A couple has escaped charges after being caught in the act in the carpark of a Hobsons Bay aged care facility. Early on Sunday, June 6, a concerned resident called police about a suspicious hatchback. The car had left then returned, the second time parked in a different location behind bushes. At 4am, the resident contacted police who

arrived at 4.50am. Two officers approached the hatchback and after a quick look and a few words, walked to the rear of the vehicle and waited. After several minutes, a man and woman emerged from the vehicle pulling on their clothes as they did so. The local couple could have faced numerous offences relating to public indecency and trespass. However, Hobsons Bay police confirmed the pair received a warning they were on

Steel yourself for fun This year’s Blacksmiths Festival at Footscray has been postponed to April but sculptures from the #150mmChallengeAUS will be on display for the next month. The Waterside Blacksmithing and Metal Art Association of Footscray put out a call to metal artists and blacksmiths around the world to participate in the challenge, seeing what could be made from 150mm of 20mm mild steel square bar and 150mm of 12mm copper round bar. Vale Jessie Hodgson By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council has paid tribute to former Williamstown councillor Jessie Hodgson who died on May 19, one day after her 72nd birthday after a short illness. Cr Peter Hemphill read a moving citation at last week’s council meeting to honour “the selfless person that she was”. “Jessie was always passionate about her community and the people in it,” he said. “She was born in Richmond but came to Williamstown because that’s where her mother’s family hailed from. “In fact, one of her ancestors was the City of Williamstown’s first engineer.” Ms Hodgson ran a shop in Nelson Place for many years and volunteered at St Mary’s church. She was first elected to the former City of Williamstown in 1990 and again in 1993, before then-premier Jeff Kennett sacked all Victorian councils in 1994 to form amalgamations. When Hobsons Bay Council was formed, Ms Hodgson ran for the first council election in 1996 but narrowly lost. “Jessie held very strong views on the issues that mattered to her as she took a keen interest in council’s affairs and was not backwards in coming forwards in telling you something she didn’t like,” Cr Hemphill said. “There will be many people who will miss Jessie, not least her family, and we pass on our condolences for them. “If there’s probably one thing that sums up Jessie’s life, that would be that she was always

working for somebody else’s interest.” Ms Hodgson lived in Williamstown most of her life before moving to Seaholme. For the past 20-odd years, she had volunteered at St Leo the Great Catholic Church in Altona North. Ms Hodgson was featured in Star Weekly, recalling when Pope John Paul II visited the parish on November 27, 1986, and blessed her on a street corner. “I came down to see him and the crowd was so great I couldn’t see anything,” she had said. “So, I went down the corner of Millers Road and Mason Street … I was the only person there and a car passed and the popemobile had to stay because the traffic lights went red. “And he blessed me. I thought, ‘I’m the only one here, he’s blessing no one else’. “His skin was translucent, and even though the windows of the car were between me and him, I felt as though I was in a great presence.”

A patch of their own Slow Food Melbourne president Alison Peake has made a budget submission to Hobsons Bay council calling for a community kitchen and garden at Brooklyn. Last week’s council meeting heard that Annunciation Primary School and The Patch in the Park community garden development group supported the proposal. Addressing councillors, Ms Peake said Brooklyn needed a central gathering hub. “Many of the residents who have moved into these new properties are young families and this has actually fostered a small but close-knit community with a strong sense of local identity.” Ms Peake said the local community wanted the council to extend the scope of the Brooklyn Community Hall redevelopment to include a community kitchen and garden.

“The Patch in the Park group are working in conjunction with the established Altona Community Gardens and plan equipment-sharing schemes and other collaborations and want a community garden on the Brooklyn hall site,” she said. “Slow Food Melbourne are represented on the Brooklyn hall steering group and are creating a series of food workshops, funded by council… but have no venue for cooking classes and demonstrations. “Likewise, the local Urban Harvest project, also funded by council, has nowhere to call home to create a learning centre based on locally-sourced produce. “The community are ready to step up to the plate and make this happen.” Goya Dmytryshchak

A young Braybrook family got the shock of their lives when they realised they had won $1 million in Wednesday’s lotto draw. The family originally thought they had won $1000 but soon discovered it was a much larger windfall. The family was one of two winners in last week’s draw, each taking home more than $1 million. “I checked our ticket last night on The Lott app,” the winning man explained on Thursday. “When I first checked it, I thought ‘score, I’ve won $1000’. But then I looked again, and I realised there were a lot more zeros on the end. “I ran straight up the stairs to my wife screaming and gave her a big hug and told her we are millionaires. “She thought I was pranking her at first, but then I showed her it on my phone and she was so shocked. “We couldn’t believe it! We had to check the ticket about 10 times to be sure.” The family plans to buy a new house and car and keep some winnings for the children’s futures. The winning ticket was purchased at Braybrook News & Lotto. Team member Andy Pham said the outlet was celebrating the exciting division one win. “It’s so exciting!” he said. “We haven’t sold a division one winning entry in a while, so this is such great news.”

Altona’s seal of approval A seal pup hanging out near Altona pier during last week’s COVID-19 lockdown, stopped long enough to pose for photos by a delighted local. Rachel Newby photographed the seal from the legally required distance. “Our morning pier walk was interrupted by the cutest seal pup swimming alongside the pier,” she said. “It played in the water for a while before joining us on the pier for a photo shoot.” Ms Newby said a Melbourne Zoo worker attended to try to catch the seal as it looked “too young to be away from its mother”. “But the seal was far too playful and having far too much fun to let them catch it,” she said. “It was there for about an hour. “I think it’s just hanging around down there;

it’s quite safe in that area. “The guy from Melbourne Zoo said, we don’t know why it’s come here but it obviously feels safe. “It spent ages swimming around there … and was just rolling around in the waves looking like it was having the time of its life.” The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning advises people not to approach seals. People are required to remain 30 metres away from a seal on land and five metres away from a seal on a structure such as a jetty or boat ramp. Dogs are required to be kept at least 50 metres away.

Rise of the Aussie playmaker From a production company in Kyneton, a new documentary that traces the legacy of American influence on Australian men’s basketball is set to be released later this year, writes Oliver Lees.

roducer Chris Appleby said it was a single game that convinced him of the need to create this project, entitled Imported. “It all came to a head when team USA came to Australia for those exhibition games at Marvel Stadium,” Appleby said. “After we beat them in the second game, I suddenly thought to myself, how did we get to this point where we can beat them at their own game?” Appleby sat in the crowd as one of more than 52,000 people packed into Marvel Stadium to watch Boomers guard Patty Mills lead the team to a historic four point victory. That day, August 29, 2019, was the first time the Boomers had beaten the United States, a history of more than 50 years of defeat. With a lifetime involved in basketball, Appleby has been able to draw on a long list of contacts to bring his idea to life. Appleby had his own brief professional basketball career in the late 1980s, developing his skills at the Australian Institute of Sport before playing two seasons for the now defunct NBL side the Canberra Cannons. He then went on to build a career in sports journalism, working for basketball magazines Australian Basketball and ONE on ONE, before landing a job at the Herald Sun in the ’90s. He also worked in the US, covering the NBA for the New York Post and producing content for the Miami Heat pregame show. Appleby said the ’80s and ’90s were the crucial periods that built the foundation of Australian basketball, and is therefore the focus of the documentary.

“The ’80s was a rocking time for the NBL, the Americans started to come over and were real show-stoppers.” he said. “But it was the 1990s when the game really took off. I think about when the Boomers played the USA in a warm-up match before the 1996 Olympics. That ’96 team was on the cusp of greatness. “Shane Heal was on fire, I don’t think the Americans realised he had such deep range. “He and Charles Barkely came together at one point, and Shane didn’t take too kindly to the treatment. “It sent a message, that you might beat us, but we’ll go down swinging.”

Since Luc Longley became the first Australian player to be drafted to the NBA in 1991, 24 others have followed in his footsteps. That includes seven Australian players in the current NBA season, a record number for Australian representation. Appleby has interviewed many of Australia’s pioneering players and coaches for the documentary, including Heal, Longley, Andrew Gaze, Dave Simmons, Leonard Copeland and Andrew Bogut. Appleby said the project shines a light on the stories that show how Australian basketball has developed. “One that stood out to me was Brett Brown coaching Simmons in the NBL and then years later coaching his son, Ben, at the 76ers,” he said. “I mean, really you can’t write this stuff.” “To see a coach and a family connected across the NBL and the NBA is a perfect example of what this project is about. “It’s really going to be a great document on what influence Americans have had on our players and coaches.” The documentary will also look at how Australia has emerged as a destination for US basketball talent. While travelling across the US in 2019 to film parts of the project, Appleby visited former Melbourne Tiger Daryl McDonald’s childhood home in New York. McDonald, or D-Mac, was born in Harlem in New York City and made a reputation for himself playing on public courts. After playing college basketball with the aim

of reaching the NBA, D-Mac was recruited by Brown to play for the North Melbourne Giants in 1994. McDonald went on to build a career in the NBL that spanned 14 years as a player and continues today as an assistant coach. “Daryl McDonald is the most unique American talent to ever play here, and it just goes to show the incredible pathway Australia has become for Americans,” Appleby said. “Playing in Australia saved his life, he grew up in a very tough area and it could have gone either way for him. His brother said he wasn’t allowed to play on the court on the next block because there was so much violence. “Now he’s brought his entire family [to Australia] and has been here almost 30 years.” Appleby said the legacy of the ’80s and ’90s has helped create a team that could challenge for a medal at the Olympics later this year. “We should do really well, hopefully all our NBA talent will play,” he said. “Australians are just getting bigger and better.” With 90 per cent of production completed on Imported, Appleby has launched a crowdfunding campaign to get the project over the line. Like many industries, Appleby’s Appstarmedia company has had its production capabilities hamstrung by COVID-19. Double the delight at Melton By Michael Howard A peach of a Chris Alford drive and an eye-catching trotting return both brought delight at Tabcorp Park Melton on Saturday night. Max Delight and Keayang Livana claimed the pacing and trotting headliners with vastly different modes of attack, beginning with Alford’s mid-race last to first move that captured the TAB Italian Cup for trainer David Aiken. Alford tapped into Max Delight’s elite speed mid-race to overcome a tricky situation, with Jason Lee extracting key threat Code Bailey from gate eight to the breeze while Alford was still dealing with second row traffic. “Code Bailey got off the fence … and he settled in front of me, which was not ideal. He got around pretty comfortably,” Alford told Trots Vision post-race. “If I sat back last they were going to go a second quarter real slow and I wouldn’t have been able to get into it.” And so instead Alford chanced his arm, launching from the tail of the field with a tick over 1200 metres to run to urge Max Delight not only past Code Bailey in the breeze but leader Boncel Benjamin. “I had confidence in the horse,” Alford said. “David [Aiken] was happy with him, so I bit the bullet and thought I’ve got to go quick enough that if Jason sees me coming he can’t kick up and thankfully it worked. You’ve got to have the horse to be able to do things like that and I had that tonight.” The 17th career win has Max Delight zeroing in on the half-a-million-dollar mark for owner Michael Maxfield and Alford said the five-year-old out of Bettors Delight by Lady Euthenia, a winner of $461,285, could chase Grand Circuit dreams.

“I think he would be good enough to keep up with them, whether he could win or not is another thing,” Alford said. More clashes with Code Bailey are likely and reinsman Jason Lee was satisfied with the performance of his own Grand Circuit-level pacer, who boxed on admirably to finish fourth, just 4.6 metres shy of the winner and behind Boncel Benjamin and Malcolms Rhythm. “Happy with him,” Lee told Trots Vision. “I probably need to just get him sharp again. “He did have a real crack when I pulled the blinds on the corner, and so he was having a real good blow afterwards. SPORT Soccer clubs plead for sports ground upgrades Three soccer clubs made an impassioned plea for better facilities at last week’s Hobsons Bay council meeting to hear budget submissions. Altona City Soccer Club requested funding for the design of its new facility at Kim Reserve in Altona. Altona Magic and Altona East soccer clubs made a joint submission requesting funding for the Paisley Park Soccer Complex in Altona North. Altona City’s Tania Oddi said the clubrooms at Kim Reserve were “falling apart, literally”. “The roof is compromised and due to its construction being asbestos this is a risk to our members and the public,” she said. “Tiles are falling off the walls. We don’t have the water pressure to run several showers at once. “All other internal walls are rendered with large cracks in them – they are unhygienic as we are unable to wipe them down.

“Our bathrooms, changerooms and First Aid rooms are not up to today’s standards. We don’t have enough changerooms for everyone. “The First Aid room does not fit a stretcher inside and causes issues with emergency service[s] when attending. “Floors throughout are uneven and we have

trip hazards everywhere. We have water leaks, drainage issues and our power supply is not adequate.” Oddi said the facilities were not DDA [Disability Discrimination Act] compliant. “We have no access for the disabled, with no ramps for wheelchairs, and the limited pathways leading to the clubrooms are all cracked and inaccessible. “I literally watch incident after incident occur every week. “I get weekly complaints about the facilities.” She said the carpark “just did not exist” with no dedicated parking or pedestrian crossings, and there was no public lighting. “Our female players and members are in constant fear having to access their vehicles in the pitch black after training or games, especially after a recent vehicle break-in at training,” Oddi said. “We are not looking for the Taj Mahal; we do

need adequate facilities so that we continue to provide for all members of the community in a safe manner.” Altona Magic Soccer Club’s Adam Longshaw and Altona East Soccer Club’s Lauren Harries made a joint submission, saying their facility at Paisley Park was “a hazard with no car parking, internal lighting or disabled access”. “We are fearful that it may take a car accident, a child being injured or a female being assaulted for action to occur,” Longshaw said. “Ultimately, we think a proactive approach should be adopted and what we are seeking from council tonight is to reconsider the rejection of this proposal – not to complete works in 2021 but put in place a plan and a proper timeline to enable an upgrade of what is considerably dangerous today to be address for our community.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Favourite son honoured By Goya Dmytryshchak Footscray Hockey Club has named a pitch in honour of Brendan Sheehan (December 10, 1953-November 24, 2020), who died aged 66 after a battle with cancer. As a 19-year-old, Brendan went to watch his little brother, Peter, who had taken up hockey playing in the under-10s at Footscray. Brendan soon had a stick in his hand and in 1972 was playing hockey in a men’s lower grade team, a decision that would ignite one of the most dedicated passions in his life. His wife, Julie-Anne Sheehan said that was the start of his involvement, which lasted “forevermore”. “He eventually did his Phys Ed degree so he had an interest then in the training side of things, helping to get the guys more flexible and fit,” she said. “From the early days, he was interested in making a contribution so he joined the board within a year or two.”

Julie-Anne shared the interest in hockey, also starting at age 19. She is the women’s all-time highest games record holder for the club. In 2017, Brendan was awarded a life membership from Hockey Victoria in recognition of his contribution to the sport beyond Footscray Hockey Club. Julie-Anne said Brendan had been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma. Having a pitch named in his honour left a lasting legacy, she said. “The best part of that, of course, it was named when Brendan was still alive,” Julie-Anne said. “It was a total shock, a total surprise. “The fact that my daughter [Ally Sheehan] and I both train on it now each week and we play games on it, it’s bitter sweet, really. “It’s lovely to know that in perpetuity there will be something that he’s made a contribution to. “Brendan had put a lot of work in to the grant writing groups, in to submissions and so on.

“That was his background in sport and recreation … facility planning, it was something he was an expert at and was one of the early adopters of the notion that if we had fields in the municipality with multiple markings, they could be used for multiple events. “Anyone that hears the words Footscray Hockey Club would immediately think of Brendan. “Brendan coaching the juniors has spanned over 40 years. [He] took an interest in the person far beyond from when he had them for that year Brendan would be the sort of person that would phone the parents just to reassure them or to follow up if a kid hadn’t turned up or did they need a lift. “He just loved the club and he loved the people and they loved him back.” Brendan was also an accomplished cricketer for Sunshine YCW Cricket Club and later went on to play sub-district cricket for Sunshine and district cricket at Essendon Cricket Club.

Western United FC is on the hunt for a new A-League new coach after parting ways with inaugural coach Mark Rudan. United announced last week that the club and Rudan had mutually agreed to part ways after two seasons. Western United chairman Jason Sourasis thanked Rudan for his leadership and dedication over the past two years. He said that the two parties had decided that a change of direction was needed and the club would reset its on-field objectives in order to meet longer term ambitions. “Mark departs Western United with our utmost respect for all his hard work and contribution in establishing the foundation of the club’s elite football program,” he said. “Also, as a start-up professional sporting club, we are greatly appreciative of Mark’s efforts in helping build the Western United brand and spreading the green and black message in the community.” After making finals in their debut season, United struggled this season, finishing 10th. Rudan said his time at United had been a rewarding experience both personally and professionally. “I would like to thank Western United FC for the opportunity to lead this young club over the past two years,” he said. “I’m thankful for some amazing relationships I have made since coming to Melbourne and coaching at this great club. “I am really proud of what this group has achieved over only two seasons despite all the challenges COVID has thrown up. “This sport is special and it wouldn’t be anything without our fans. I truly believe in the vision of Western United which will redefine the football landscape when it builds its stadium in Melbourne’s west.
