Amelia’s brave battle By Tara Murray Amelia Nesci is like most three-year-olds. She loves playing outside and going on trips to the supermarket, and is just as happy at home sitting on the couch with the Ipad. The young Sunshine resident now has a fight on her hands after being diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Her father Anthony Nesci said that about a month ago, Amelia become very tired and was sleeping all the time. She didn’t want to eat or go to daycare and started to become really pale. A sore stomach then appeared. He and her mum, Nadia Cali, took her to the doctors, thinking she might have an infection, but tests proved otherwise.

After a blood nose that lasted for two hours, more tests were carried out and the family’s world fell apart. Amelia has already started treatment and is set to have chemotherapy for the next 12 months. Her cancer is the most common in children, with a good rate of recovery. Mr Nesci said it had been hard watching their daughter in pain. “She knows something is going on,” he said. “Slowly and surely we are picking our moments to let her know what is happening. Reading her stories about kids with leukemia and kids who are losing their hair. She’s asking ‘is that what is going to happen to me daddy, is that what I’ve got daddy’ my heart just breaks.” Mr Nesci said he wanted to encourage other parents to trust their instincts when it came to their child’s health. “That gut feel that is gnawing away in the bottom of your stomach, act on it,” he said. “Hindsight is a beautiful thing … There were signs there that maybe I chose to ignore, hoping it wasn’t as serious as it turned out. “I had always thought I’m a pretty positive person. I thought it was growing pains or

something like that, or it’s just a phase. “I think I knew deep down there were a couple of things that didn’t add up for me.” The family is calling on people to donate blood if they can, after a blood transfusion was needed to help save Amelia’s life Ms Cali’s best friend Laura Ward set up a

GoFundMe page for Amelia. Originally aiming to reach $5000, more than $46,000 has been donated so far. Mr Nesci said they had been blown away by the support they had received. “I’ve reached out to all those who I know and those I don’t know,” he said. “If I could hug each

Writers and Readers Festival moves online The 2021 Brimbank Writers & Readers Festival will go ahead as scheduled from Thursday 17 – Saturday 26 June.

Residents on alert as new exposure sites listed Residents of Hillside, Taylors Hill, Taylors Lakes, Sydenham and Burnside are being asked to be on high alert for COVID-19 symptoms with a number of locations in those areas listed as tier two exposure sites on Friday. The exposure sites date back to May 21, when a positive case attended the Burnside Hub Shopping Centre. A positive case was at Chemist Warehouse between 9.30am and 9.40am, the Angry Beans Cafe between 9.40am and 9.45am and the Thio Eyecare shop between 9.40am and 10.15am. On the same day, a positive case visited the

Sugar Gum Hotel in Hillside between 7pm and 9.30pm. Reform Health Osteopath in Hillside on May 24, between 10am and 10.40am, and May 26 between 2.55pm and 3.40pm; Taylors Hill Medical Clinic on May 25 between 10am and 11am and May 27 between 11.45am and 12.45pm, United Chemists in Taylors Hill on May 27 between 3pm and 3.30pm, Mycar Tyre and Auto in Sydenham on May 31 between 2.30pm and 4.15pm, Coles Express in Taylors Hill on May 31 between 4.30pm and 5pm, and Coles Express in Taylors Lakes on June

Honours for our finest By Tara Murray Retired doctor Selvanayagam Selvendra, chaplin Paul Hammat and Vietnam veteran Martin Lowe have been awarded medals of the Order of Australia in this year’s Queen’s Birthday honours list. Dr Selvendra, who retired after more than 59 years of service, was recognised for his contribution to medicine. He had a practice in Sunshine for more than 40 years. He was named Brimbank citizen of the year in 2020. Dr Selvendra said he was surprised to be awarded a medal of the Order of Australia. “I’m very, very happy and I thank the Australian government who gave me the honour,” he said. Dr Selvendra moved to Australia in 1974. He said he had enjoyed his work and that treating his patients was the most important thing for him. “When I retired I had about 55-60 patients sent me cards wishing me a happy retirement. It was really good.” Mr Lowe, who is known as Steve, was recognised for his service to veterans. He served in the army for 26 years, including in Vietnam where he met his wife, Tuyet. Mr Lowe has since worked closely with the Vietnamese community, including co-founding the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia – Victorian branch’s education team. “When I was first advised of my nomination, I was shocked, but thought that this does not necessarily mean I’ll get it,” he said. “But when I received the confirmation email I was overwhelmed. Having to keep it a secret from my family was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. “To receive this honour continues to overwhelm me each time I think of it.” Mr Lowe was a co-designer and committee member of the Victorian State Vietnam War Memorial in Dandenong and committee member of the Vietnam War Memorial & Commemorative Garden in Sunshine.

“All of what I do, with my Vietnamese community, I do because I feel that I was not able to be part of them winning their freedom in their own country,” he said. “I feel that whatever I can do to help individuals or groups in our community, is a way in which I want to contribute to their enjoyment of the freedoms that we are lucky to have here in Australia. “I have done most of this with the support of my wife and my family.” Mr Hammat said he was completely shocked by the honour. He was recognised for his service

Warning as thefts from cars spike Vehicle owners are being reminded to remove valuables from their cars following a number of thefts from vehicles in the Hillside, Caroline Springs and Fraser Rise areas in recent weeks. Police have reported an increase in the number of thefts from vehicles in the area – on many occasions, the vehicles have been left unlocked and valuables left inside. On the Melton Eyewatch Facebook page Melton police said they would be increasing patrols throughout the community to help try and curb the thefts. The post stated that vehicle owners can take steps to try and prevent thefts. “It is really important to always secure your vehicle and that is regardless of how long you will be away from it,” the Facebook post said. “If your vehicle is in the garage, parked in your driveway or you simply need to run back into your home please remove the keys and lock it at all times.” In 2020, theft from a motor vehicle was the second highest criminal offence in Melton, with 1002 offences reported. It was the highest criminal offence in Brimbank, with 2004 offences of theft from a motor vehicle reported. Organised crime crackdown Properties in Sunshine West, Sydenham, Taylors Lakes, Keilor Park, Taylors Hill, Keilor Park, Cairnlea and Sunshine North were among those raided as part of an Australian Federal Police-led operation which has resulted in more than 100 alleged organised crime members being charged. More than 4000 members from the AFP and state and territory police have been involved in the execution of hundreds of warrants since June 7, under Operation Ironside, which covertly began three years ago. Police used world-leading capability to see encrypted communications used exclusively by organised crime, which allegedly included plots to kill, mass drug trafficking and gun distribution. The operation led to the arrest of 224 offenders for 526 charges.

Stepping up to help out The Filipino Community Council of Victoria has answered hundreds of calls for help in recent weeks. The Brooklyn-based group has been doing what it can to help those less fortunate and struggling during COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. It has delivered more than 1000 grocery packages to people across Melbourne, with volunteers packing more than 3000 kilograms of groceries. Among those to benefit from the emergency relief program are international students, temporary migrants, women, senior citizens and job seekers.

Safety fears prompt police patrols By Tara Murray Police are increasing patrols around Errington Reserve in St Albans following complaints from residents and park users about anti-social behaviour. Those who use the reserve say there has been an increase in drug and alcohol-fuelled behaviour since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Resident Robert Black said it was common to find drug paraphernalia in the area, while there are regularly burnt-out cars nearby. “My kids go to daycare and school really

close to Errington,” he said. “I do my shopping there every night. “I’ve kept an eye on it [the upgrades] and the ground has improved but the situation was getting worse.” Mr Black said he felt compelled to take action after St Albans Football Club gave permission for some of its junior sides to train at the ground. He said as the coach of the club’s under-14 team he felt he needed to ensure the safety of the playing group. Mr Black has raised his concerns with the police and Brimbank council.

“I wrote a letter to the council once I found out … that the ground would be available for use by St Albans Football Club to use for training and matches,” he said. “I know that I will be in charge of 30-40 kids each session. I was a bit concerned about being in charge of them all with intoxicated people around and yelling things out … People don’t want to go there and don’t feel safe.' Keilor Downs Senior Sergeant Terry West said police had increased patrols in the area and were looking at other measures to help keep residents safe. “We are aware of some issues with local

sporting clubs and we’re working with the council to address those concerns,” he said. “We’re increasing patrols as much as we can. We’re working with the community where we can.” Brimbank council community wellbeing director Lynley Dumble said the council had increased surveillance, cleaning and monitoring of the area following complaints. “Council will continue to work closely with Victoria Police, local traders, community groups, support services, and the sporting clubs that use these facilities, to keep the area safe for the whole community.”

Ninja is very unpredictable – you can have a great day one day and if your mind is slightly off the next it’s very easy to fail. “I guess this is where it can draw comparisons to our everyday life. Fraser Rise builder Daniel Tolli has set his sights on tackling one of his hardest ever challenges – conquering Mount Midoriyama. Mr Tolli is one of the hopefuls tackling the all-new Australian Ninja Warrior course when it returns to screens this Sunday for the first time in 2021. While the challenge will pit Mr Tolli directly against other competitors, he also faces a race against time due to a hand condition called palmar fibromatosis which gradually causes fingers to become deformed. “I have always been involved in competitive sport, coming from an elite gymnastics background,” he said. “I haven’t stopped training and I feel Ninja Warrior has the ability to showcase my ability and test myself with my age and a physical disability I have.” Mr Tolli said he was drawn to take part in Australian Ninja Warrior as he wanted to see if

Tip fires fuel school concerns By Tara Murray The principal of a school near the Kealba landfill has raised concerns about the impact ongoing tip fires are having on the school community. Residents from Kealba and nearby suburbs have long complained about the smell and health issues caused by the fires, which have been burning for more than 18 months. Landfill operator Barro recently said it could take until May next year before the last of the fires are extinguished. The Environment Protection Authority (EPA had ordered that

the fires be extinguished by the end of July. Parents of pupils at St Paul’s Primary School on Sunshine Avenue, just a few kilometres from the landfill, have complained about the odour. Principal Denis Daley told an online community meeting held by Barro recently that he shared the concerns of parents. “It is certainly offensive at times,” he said of the odour. “That has given me cause for concern in times it has been blowing in our direction. “I have spoken with the EPA, emailed [Environment Minister] Lily D’ambrosio and [St Albans MP] Natalie Suleyman, and from where we are, there has been little satisfactory

information coming back except that the EPA and Barro have it under control. “We would beg to differ in terms of impact on the school.” Barro’s Steve Murphy told the same meeting that he had contacted the school about its concerns but the principal he spoke with said there were no issues. It was later revealed that Mr Murphy had contacted the wrong school – St Paul’s in Sunshine West. The meeting was often emotional, with one resident saying the past couple years of his life had been miserable.

He said that he had been too embarrassed to have visitors to his house since the fires started. In its latest community update, the EPA said it had escalated its investigation into Barro missing deadlines to have some of the hot spots extinguished. “While EPA’s investigations into this matter are continuing, we will keep you informed over the coming weeks of the next steps,” the update said. “We will ensure that all practicable measures are taken to resolve the hotspots and the odours impacting local communities as quickly and safely as possible.”

Amazon advertises 200-plus Ravenhall jobs Online retail powerhouse Amazon’s plans to open a giant new warehouse in Ravenhall are gathering steam with applications now open for more than 200 jobs at the fulfilment centre. About 300 new jobs will be created at the new facility, due to more than double Amazon’s operational footprint in Victoria when it opens later this year. Roles advertised last week range from team leader positions to entry level jobs processing customer orders. Amazon Australia director of operations Craig Fuller said the company is proud to be creating hundreds of new employment opportunities for Melburnians at a time they are needed most. “There are opportunities for motivated, enthusiastic people from all backgrounds and we look forward to welcoming them to our Ravenhall team,” he said.

The Ravenhall fulfilment centre will be 37,000 square metres in size, almost double the size of the Melbourne Cricket Ground and able to house up to six million items.

It will complement Amazon’s first Australian FC in Dandenong South which opened in 2017, enabling the company to increase the proportion of items that can be shipped directly

to Victorian customers from Melbourne and enable faster delivery. MY BRIMBANK The Brimbank Writers and Readers Festival kicks off this week with a range of events that encourage a love of reading, celebrates creativity and promotes lifelong learning. Festival participant Marcia Ferguson talks with Tara Murray. I first met the Brimbank arts and culture team in my role as artistic director of Big West Festival between 2012 and 2016. The festival’s community co-ordinator, Jo Trevathan – who now works with Brimbank council – had many networks in the municipality and we looked to share some programming across councils. My extended family also lived in Sunshine as my great-great-uncle, D B Ferguson was managing director of Sunshine Harvesters, and worked closely with Hugh [H.V] McKay. The families remained close until the death of my grandmother and her generation. The street where DB had his home was named after him. I returned to Brimbank in September 2020 through to March as the co-ordinator of a major arts program called Land MARKS, where for six months, 10 artists worked across Brimbank communities creating murals, performances, community events, connecting communities after the trauma of COVID lockdowns. What are your favourite things about Brimbank? I love the vibrancy and warmth of the Brimbank community, exposure to different cultures and the lifestyle and ethos of different cultures. I also loved working closely with the arts and culture team members integral to the Land MARKS program. I was there while things gradually opened up and it was a great time to engage with and appreciate the municipality as a whole.

Tell us about your artwork and the role you play in the art community I work as an artist and a creative producer with a particular interest in public art. I love text and strong visual imagery and have made works across all genres – films, plays, radio works, contemporary art installation. I’ve been working as an artist, director, writer and producer for over 40 years. Unbelievable! I’m very proud to have worked at Back to Back Theatre on many shows that toured the world, including Ganesh versus the Third Reich. I’m currently mentor to two artists with the Victorian Independent Produce Initiative, and happily working on six month residency as a multidisciplinary artist at Hamlyn Views School in Geelong. I guess people look to me to offer advice on creating and producing new work – a role I cherish. But making art is even better. You are part of the Brimbank Writers and Readers Festival. Tell us about your role in the festival and what people can expect from the festival I am chairing a panel with three female artists who created new works for Land MARKS. They will share slides of their work and stories about how storytelling was intrinsic to their art projects. There are some really moving and remarkable stories about how communities responded and what it meant to them to ‘have a voice’ through the creative process.

Kings Park Primary School was awash with colour on Friday as pupils returned to school after two weeks of COVID-19 lockdown. Pupils and teachers wore something that made them feel happy, whether it be their favourite dress up costume, favourite colour, favorite sports team or just a favorite hat or jumper. Teacher Hatice Rifat said they wanted to make the return to school enjoyable after a couple of tough weeks of lockdown. “We knew there may again be a level of anxiety as the community continues to grapple with the pandemic and its impact on our lives,” she said.

“As leaders in our community, we have a role to play in reducing that anxiety through providing certainty where we can for students and families. “To honour this we had a fun Friday happy day theme.” The school’s media and visual arts teachers also made a video to welcome all pupils back. Throughout the day Pharrell Williams’ song Happy was played on the PA system, with pupils stopping and dancing when it came on. There were prizes handed out throughout the day. Tara Murray

Keep a lid on the flu Adjunct Associate Professor Chris Carter CEO, North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network Now’s the time most of us get our annual flu shot. But there are far fewer confirmed cases of influenza in Australia than in previous flu seasons. It’s one of the few silver linings of the COVID-19 pandemic. Border closures, social distancing and improved public hygiene have not only helped us to control coronavirus, but have kept the lid on flu. So should we bother to get our flu jab? Absolutely. Less flu in the community does not reduce your chance of becoming ill if you do contract the virus, which is highly contagious and still has time to take hold this year. Catching the flu can spell weeks off work, time away from family and friends, and even life-threatening complications such as pneumonia. In a normal year, thousands of Australians are hospitalised and hundreds die from flu or flu complications. The elderly are particularly susceptible to serious illness, as are pregnant women, and those with weakened immunity. These are also the groups strongly advised to get the annual flu shot – although the vaccine is recommended for everyone over the age of six months. Flu is imported to Australia each year, and each year a ‘seasonal’ flu vaccine is developed to combat the most commonly circulating strains. This is why you need a flu shot every year. Flu generally takes hold around April to May, and peaks from June to September. As the vaccine is most effective in the first three to four months, now is the time to get one. Border closures have likely contributed to the decline in flu. Yet our borders will eventually

reopen, and flu will increase. But we can, and should, learn from our COVID-19 experience – by maintaining good hygiene practices, getting our flu shots, and staying home if unwell. Of course, if you notice signs of cold or flu, your first step is to get a COVID-19 test and self-isolate until you get your results.

Remember, too, that a flu shot will not protect you from COVID-19 – nor will a COVID-19 vaccine protect you from flu. But it will reduce your risk of getting dangerously ill by contracting both COVID-19 and flu simultaneously. You need to wait 14 days between having your

flu shot and getting a COVID-19 vaccination. Otherwise, if you’re feeling well, roll up your sleeve, to keep everyone safe. Flu shots are readily available from GPs and pharmacists, and at some community sessions. You never forget the flu – so please, don’t forget your flu shot.

Severe storms leave trail of destruction Emergency services responded to more than 260 calls for assistance within 24 hours in Brimbank last week. As severe storms lashed the state on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, emergency crews received reports of flooding, damaged houses, trees across roads and people requiring rescuing. St Albans was the busiest area in Brimbank with 57 requests for help, according to the state emergency control centre. Ingredients 2 eggs 1 cup buttermilk 1/4 cup extra light olive oil 1 cup rolled oats 1 1/4 cups wholemeal flour 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped and toasted (optional) 2 tbs sesame seeds 2 tbsp pumpkin seeds 1 cup blackberries, chopped

Method 1. Whisk the eggs, buttermilk and oil together. 2. In a separate bowl, combine all remaining ingredients. Tip the wet ingredient mixture into this bowl. 3. Mix until just combined and then spoon into paper cases. 4. Bake for 20 minutes or until muffins are golden on top. 5. Let cool on a wire rack and enjoy! TIP: These can be frozen to keep as a handy breakfast on the go. Recipe from www.kidspot.com.au

Choose a colour and sprinkle the sand lightly onto the section covered in glue. Shake off excess sand. Continue doing this in sections with different sand colours until the picture is complete. Hold paper above the parts already done to make it easier to keep colours it in the section you want until they dry. 4. Let dry completely and shake off excess sand. TIP: Laminate sand art to protect it and avoid sandy mess as it hangs on the fridge. You can also use glitter for this activity.

SPORT Taylors Lakes locks in new playing coach Taylors Lakes has added another piece to the puzzle announcing Alex Deucher as playing-coach for the next Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association season. After a winless season in 2020-21, the Lions have looked to add some more experience. Deucher brings exactly that, having spent the past two seasons with premier team Kingston Hawthorn, as an assistant coach and one season as first XI captain. Prior to that, the Englishman spent seven seasons at fellow subbies club Mt Waverley, where he was an assistant coach and held the role of head of junior coaching development. He captained Mt Waverley to a first XI premiership in 2015-16. Lions president Rob Arnold said the club was excited to get someone of Deucher’s calibre on

board. “He has a lot of leadership and coaching experience and we think [he] is someone who can help the young group. “In the interview process he was the clear standout for us. He knows the lay of the land in subbies and enjoys this level of cricket. “It’s a natural progression for him to take on a head coaching role.” Arnold said Deucher had done some research on the club before the interview process and immediately sat on the same page as the club, knowing the results from last season didn’t reflect the true story. Deucher replaces Glenn Marr as coach. Arnold paid tribute to Marr who has been a long-time assistant coach at the club and took on the coaching role at the last minute

when the club struggled to get someone due to COVID-19. “He did a fantastic job,” Arnold said. “The players brought in and the morale at training was the best it has ever been.” The signing of Deuhcer is the second big announcement from the club in as many weeks. The club announced that another Victorian Premier Cricket player, Trent Waring, will be a playing assistant coach. Waring, who played junior cricket at the club, was a star bowler with Greenvale Kangaroos. Arnold said he was excited what their bowling attack can produce. “We’ve now got Alex and Trent, and H [Hoa Lai] – who won the bowling award and club champion – coming up from the seconds,” he said.

“Depending on the situation, we have the choice of three bowlers to open the bowling, so we can throw the ball around. “Jarrod Wakeling is also one of the best spinners in the competition.” Arnold said ideally they would like to recruit a batsman to help strengthen the side. He said they had some good young batsmen, but they would like some more experience. “We would like to get another batsman to help the kids,” he said. “Luke Denny is only 18 and we’ve been nurturing him along with lots of opportunities to bat in the top six. “Jason Denny is only 22-23 and Harsahib Singh was able to hold his own, while still playing under-16s. “Marcus Just is still in his early 20s.”

Cougars make big moves By Tara Murray New Kealba-Green Gully coach Danny Viani had no intentions of returning to the top role at the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association club. Having previously coached the club in 2007 and playing with them until recently, Viani was happy on the sidelines But when the club asked him to come back and coach, something changed. “They asked me if I would be interested in coming back,” he said. “I had no ambitions to coach again. But the challenge seemed appealing and I felt that I owed them. “Most of the people there are my mates.” Viani will be a coach only this season, with his playing days behind him. He said it would be a new challenge and learning curve for himself. He is just one of many former players who have returned to the club which has made a point of reconnecting with former players. “The last three to four years we haven’t been great at contacting past players,” he said. “This year there has been a big focus between myself and Jarrod [Catania], the president, to do that. “We just asked the question and it’s amazing what happens when you ask the question the right way.” Four-time premiership player Divesh Kumar returns, having played on the other side of the city the past couple of years. Rage Uppal, who was part of the club’s first two Luscombe Shield premierships, returns after several years away from cricket. Former coach Evan Long remains at the club, with Viani expecting him to again play a major role. Long, who coached the side for the past seven seasons, has been one of the dominant players in the competition, winning four league best and fairest awards. “He is part of the fabric and culture of the club,” Viani said. “He’s been captain-coach for six or seven years. It’s the right opportunity for a new person to step into the role. “It’s big shoes to fill. I see this as a chance for him to become an even better player. He is one of the top players in the competition and he’s a match winner.” The Cougars have also added some new key recruits. Aaron Amos comes across from the Lalor Stars in the Diamond Valley Cricket Association. Viani said you don’t often get players of Amos’ calibre looking to change clubs. “Someone mentioned we had a sniff of an opportunity to get him and we then had a

Viani said they had high expectations for the side this season. “I only came back for one reason, that was to be successful and win a premiership. “The team is quite capable, it’s just a matter of doing it on the park.”

Western United FC is on the hunt for a new A-League coach after parting ways with inaugural coach Mark Rudan. Western United chairman Jason Sourasis thanked Rudan for his leadership and dedication over the past two years. He said the two parties had decided that a change of direction was needed and the club would reset its on-field objectives in order to meet longer term ambitions. “Mark departs Western United with our utmost respect for all his hard work and contribution in establishing the foundation of the club’s elite football program,” Sourasis said. “Also, as a start-up professional sporting club, we are greatly appreciative of Mark’s efforts in helping build the Western United brand and spreading the green and black message in the community.” After making finals in their debut season, United struggled this season, finishing 10th. Rudan said his time at United had been rewarding, both personally and professionally. “I’m thankful for some amazing relationships I have made since coming to Melbourne and coaching at this great club. “I am really proud of what this group has achieved over only two seasons despite all the challenges COVID has thrown up. “This sport is special and it wouldn’t be anything without our fans. I truly believe in the vision of Western United which will redefine the football landscape when it builds its stadium in Melbourne’s west.
