Brimbank and neighbouring residents continue to turn out in force for COVID-19 vaccinations, with Western Health’s two clinics vaccinating more than 14,000 people in four days. In the four days to last Thursday, 8157 people were vaccinated at the Sunshine Hospital, while 6484 people were vaccinated at the Showgrounds. Both locations are taking bookings for the AstraZeneca and Pzifer vaccines, with the roll-out last week extending to include those aged between 40 and 49. The Showgrounds was also one of the locations for the priority vaccine roll-out for aged care and disability care workers, which was set to end on Sunday. Acting Premier James Merlino said on Friday morning that demand for the vaccines is exceeding supply and he had requested that the federal government provide double the doses to the GP network. Hope for end to lockdown By Tara Murray Brimbank residents have their fingers crossed that the fourth COVID-19 lockdown will come to an end this week. Melburnians are facing their second week of lockdown, with case numbers not dropping as much as experts would have liked. In Brimbank, which has one of the highest total number of COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, there are no active cases. In the 3037 postcode which includes Calder Park, Delahey, Hillside, Sydenham and Taylors Hill there are two active cases.
Brimbank residents have been on high alert, with a number of exposure sites in the municipality. Aged Care provider BlueCross Western Gardens is an exposure site after a staff member who worked at the centre on May 28 tested positive. All other staff and residents have since returned negative tests. All residents who were on-site between noon and midnight on that day are classified as tier one contacts. Anyone who entered the centre’s low care unit or who used the staff communal areas in the high care unit between 4pm and 9.30pm on
that day are also classified as tier one contacts. All other staff, contractors and visitors are classified as tier two contacts and need to get tested and isolate until they get a negative result. Brimbank Shopping Centre is an exposure site after a positive case worked at Muffin Break on May 26, 27 and 28. Tier one sites are Muffin Break, the male staff bathrooms and the food court on May 26, between 8.45am-5.30pm, May 27 between 11.45am-9.30pm and May 28 between 8.45am-6.30pm. Anyone who was at those locations at those times and dates needs to get tested and isolate for 14 days.

The rest of the centre on those three days and times are a tier two site. Nandos on May 26 between 2pm and 5.30pm was named individually as a tier two site. The 420 bus route between Sunshine railway station at Dickson Street and Brimbank Shopping Centre on May 27 between 11.50am and 12.14pm is also classified as a tier one exposure site. Sunshine station is classified as a tier three site on May 27 between 11.03am and 11.50am on May 27. Anyone who was at the station between those times needs to monitor for symptoms.

Big weddings another victim of lockdown Marriage celebrant Emma Langoulant has seen weddings change over the past 12 months. It used to be big parties and hundreds of people now, for many, weddings are all about just being able to tie the knot, she says. Ms Langoulant, who officiates at weddings across Victoria, said it had been a tough few weeks for brides and grooms, many who had rescheduled their weddings due to a fourth COVID-19 lockdown. “I know of one couple that was due to get married on June 5 and has postponed it for a third time,” she said. Ms Langoulant said with uncertainty and
the short notice of lockdowns, people weren’t having big weddings. She said many were eloping instead, saving themselves from potential heartache and financial hardship. “When I was booking weddings for 2021, I was asking them how they feel on whether they would proceed with five, 10 or 50 people and most people said they would likely go ahead. “Sentiment has changed around having the big party. People don’t want to take the risk.” Ms Langoulant, who lives in Taylors Lakes, said a mnay people who had postponed last year were getting married this year, and her
business was flourishing due to the increase in weddings. Some people though had postponed their weddings even further into the future – one couple due to be married in June last year, have rescheduled to November 2022. Ms Langoulant said one of her biggest concerns at the moment was what would happen if restrictions for regional Victoria were changed to differ from metro Melbourne. “What does it mean for couples?” she said. “It’s a bit of murky waters.” Tara Murray

Her business, Events on Paper which she has run for 13 years, is on the brink of collapsing as Victoria goes through a fourth lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. “I don’t think the government understands what lockdown does to events,” she said. “It’s heartbreaking for all the suppliers associated with it, it’s our livelihood. It’s what puts the food on the table, it’s what puts the kids through school.” Ms Mizzi said making invitations for weddings and events was difficult prior to the past 12 months, with a number of online alternatives popping up.

When lockdowns hit and people were forced to cancel weddings and parties, she was left with the fallout. “People put down a deposit and then the event is cancelled after I’ve done my order. I’ve got a large amount of stocks just sitting there – place cards, seating charts, invitations. “Some brides have paid for their orders and decided not to collect them. Others haven’t been in contact at all. “I spent yesterday doing a massive stocktake, looking to sell off a lot of stock that is no longer required.” Ms Mizzi said she wasn’t alone in the industry, with friends who work at event venues, photographers and wedding car hire companies all impacted. She said people were hesitant to book anything in case they then had to cancel it down the track, and it was causing stress for the industry and brides and grooms alike. “Because of the per square metre rule, people who were having 300, 400, 500 people, are now

having smaller weddings. “Having 300 invite bookings was quite profitable. Now it’s 35 to 40 invites and by the time you order the stock, pay for delivery and make them, there’s not much profit,” Ms Mizzi said. Having lost confidence in the market, Ms Mizzi said she was considering downsizing her business.

She said that her accountant and the council told her she wasn’t eligible for any business grants. She said she can no longer afford to have the invitation business as her full-time wage. “I want to keep going, but I don’t know if I can,” she said. “I found other work last year and now that has finished I’ve kept putting in applications. Heaps of people are out of work, so there are 400 applications for each job.”
Families of residents in a locked-down aged care facility in Brimbank have been left furious after a staff member tested positive to COVID-19. The staff member at BlueCross, who worked across multiple aged care facilities, is believed to have caught the virus from a staff member at Arcare in Maidstone. While all residents and staff have since recorded negative tests, residents are classified as tier one contacts and have to isolate for 14 days. A family member of a resident at BlueCross took to social media saying that she was fuming. “[The] private facility run by the federal government have failed every person working there and the residents,” she said. “They learnt nothing, fixed nothing.” A statement by BlueCross said it had actively discouraged staff from working across multiple sites wherever possible. Arcare, which has multiple sites across Brimbank, said it had introduced a new package to ensure all Arcare staff only work at their primary place of work and would be compensated for forgoing shifts at other locations. Last week, the federal government reintroduced a ban on aged care staff working across multiple facilities. BlueCross said asymptomatic testing and ongoing vaccination of residents has been, and continues to be, a major priority of its overall COVID-19 safety management plan. “We have facilitated vaccination of all residents who consented to receive the vaccine as soon as supplies have become available,” the statement said. Safety upgrades Pedestrian safety upgrades near Keilor Primary School were under way last week. The works, scheduled to occur throughout this month, include the installation of electronic speed limit signs on the Old Calder Freeway near the school. It’s hoped the new signs will improve driver compliance and make roads safer for shoppers, pedestrians and children travelling to and from school. Drivers have been warned to allow extra travel time, and look out for signs and changed traffic conditions. Temporary static speed limit signs will be in place while the power for the new signs is connected.

Regional park planned A new 215-hectare regional park will be created in Deanside as part of the state government’s $154 million Suburban Parks Program. Providing open space the equivalent of more than 100 AFL fields, the Kororoit Creek Regional Park will be adjacent to a new 45-hectare conservation area, providing a total of 260 hectares of new green space. Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the Suburban Parks Program will provide 6500 hectares of new and upgraded green space for communities in Melbourne’s growing outer suburbs, including a significant refresh of the existing Toolern Creek Regional Park in Melton South. Parks Victoria wants to hear from the community about its vision and priorities for
the new park. As part of the Suburban Parks Program, Parks Victoria is also updating the park plan for the existing Toolern Creek Regional Park and wants feedback and ideas. “These parks will make a real difference to the health and wellbeing of people in these communities – providing green open space for people to stretch the legs, clear the head and catch up with friends,” Ms D’Ambrosio said. Mental health is the focus of Australia Post’s community grants program this year. Not-for-profit organisations can apply for up to $10,000 for projects that have a primary purpose of improving mental health and wellbeing and will help people locally. There have been at least eight factory, waste management or tip fires across the west and Hume since October, while the Kealba landfill has had underground fires burning continuously for more than a year. Former LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley and former state MLC member Colleen Hartland say enough is enough. “It’s a long-running issue,” Mr Rowley said. “It doesn’t matter which party has been in power at the time, they haven’t done enough clean-up of the west.

“The urgency to clean it [industry] up has never been greater.” Mr Rowley said during his time with LeadWest, from 2010-18, one of the biggest concerns raised by local councils was the need for a cleaner, greener and more liveable western metropolitan area. “We were constantly talking about it with the other tiers of government, about the investment needed in the west to make it cleaner and greener. “It just seems that it is taking a long time to get there.” Mr Rowley said an Environment Protection Act, which changes how the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) regulates pollution, waste and contamination in Victoria, had been
delayed for 12 months. “We’ve been waiting for so long to have confidence to be able to breath fresh air. Confidence that our creeks aren’t going to be polluted.” He suggests forming a steering committee which would include the EPA, WorkSafe, MFB and council representatives to have a co-ordinated approach to industry clean-up. “I don’t think questions are being asked on Spring Street as often as they should.” He also proposed government funding to help bring old industrial estates up to the 21st century and the introduction of better air quality monitoring systems. Ms Hartland is a member of the Facebook group Anti-Toxic Waste Alliance, which was
set up after the West Footscray warehouse fire which spewed toxic fumes across the western suburbs for days in August 2018. She said the group, a non-political alliance of community groups, organisations and individuals, wants action. “There’s been a spate of these fires,” she said. “There’s been three in the last 10 days. “The EPA and the state government don’t seem to be taking it seriously.” Ms Hartland said the group wanted more regulation on industrial sites, clear information about when the EPA is called in and when and for how long air quality equipment is set up. The school reopened for 2021 on Thursday and there was plenty of fun for the two sets of twins and their school friends. Colby and Sebastian, 8, and Rania and Dania, 6, are two of three sets of twins at the school this year. The school has about 65 students. A third set of twins will start on February 11 and will be part of the school’s early years program. Principal Lee Bullock said it was possibly the first time the school had welcomed three sets of twins.

Giving help, hope to homeless By Tara Murray Sometimes it is about providing a meal. Other times it’s just about listening. For local organisation Inspire Hope, the main focus is making sure those who find themselves homeless are not alone. The organisation’s Tamara Carr said for many people who are homeless, it is a very lonely place. “We find out where they need to go and what services they need,” she said. “If we can build that bridge for them, we will. “We try to put things in place for them. The
journey can be hard, lonely and sad. We try to come in and provide some love to them.” Ms Carr said there were a range of different things they could do for people who were homeless. It might be helping them find housing, providing items and food or helping with identification. Inspire Hope set up a local support program in St Albans last year to help residents who were in need. Ms Carr said they had seen more people needing help as a fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic continues. She said that since the windback of extra
JobSeeker payments, many people were struggling financially and didn’t know where their next meal was coming from. “There are so many amazing services in Sunshine, but not a lot in St Albans for those people,” Ms Carr said. “We’ve definitely seen an increase in the number of people needing help due to COVID for different reasons. “We’ve seen an increase in violent domestic relationships as a fallout of the pandemic and we’re seeing unstable housing.” Inspire Hope has just started a weekly lunch at the Tin Shed in St Albans.
Ms Carr said it was a safe space where someone could go for a few hours. There were five people at the first lunch, with one woman saying it was the first time she had drunk a hot cup of tea in months. Inspire Hope also runs a fortnightly lunch on Sundays at various locations in St Albans. While the lockdown halted those lunches, Ms Carr said they were still looking for ways to support people in need. “We do know where some of them ‘live’ and we take food out to them, so they still get a hot lunch. We check if they need anything … Interaction is a big part of what we do.”
Zoom classes reactivated Reclink has fired back up the Zoom and online exercise classes to help people get through the latest coronavirus lockdown. Having run daily classes through last year’s lockdowns, the organisation knew exactly where to start when Victoria was put into a snap ‘circuit breaker’ lockdown late last month. Reclink’s chief executive Dave Wells said they know that social isolation and lack of physical activity are two of the big concerns during lockdown. He said getting online and connecting with people helps to address both concerns. “We started a program called Reclink Connect,” he said. “We ran sessions every day. We started the day with reflection and then physical exercise activities. “We also started sports share, which saw us take equipment out to the homes of people
who didn’t have equipment and we did a lot of phone calls with the more vulnerable people.” Mr Wells said the program created a community that helped people feel more connected. Make time to look after your mental health Mental health advocates headspace are calling for people to look after themselves during metro Melbourne’s extended circuit breaker lockdown. headspace clinical advice and governance manager Rupert Saunders said the effort to contain the COVID-19 virus has had an impact on how young people interact with family and friends, and how they can access work and study. “For many young people, lockdown can be challenging – and it is normal to feel sad, angry

or scared at this uncertain time,” Mr Saunders said. “The sheer volume of information about COVID-19 can be overwhelming too.” Mr Saunders said there are many “practical
steps” a person can take to look after their mental health during this turbulent period. “Staying connected with the people who are important to them, even if it is over the phone or online,” he said. “Taking a break from the news cycle; this may include switching off social media, the TV and radio for a while. “Making the most of the permitted time for outdoor activity. “[And] doing things they know help them to feel calm and grounded.
Call to postpone rail link By Tara Murray Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn is calling for the construction of the Melbourne Airport Rail Link to be postponed until proper community consultation has been conducted. Mr Finn is the latest person to slam the concept plans for the rail link, which include a new bridge over the Maribyrnong River and elevated twin tracks between Sunshine and the Albion Junction. There is no mention of the Sunshine Super Transport Hub in the plans nor upgrades to the Albion train station, which have both previously been highlighted to be part of the rail link development. Brimbank council, community and business groups, and residents have been vocal about their concerns over the plan. Speaking in Parliament, Mr Finn called on Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan to address residents’ concerns. He asked if she would put the proposed sky rail on hold until the residents of Albion and Sunshine are consulted. “The Melbourne Airport Rail Link is a much-needed and a long overdue addition to Melbourne’s infrastructure and no one can argue with that or seek to,” he said. “Locals in Sunshine and Albion have expressed concerns about the fly over which would take this fly over 50 metres above Albion station and Ballarat Road. “They are angry they have not been consulted about this and extremely disappointed that the option ditches the promised upgrade of the Albion railway station. “I’m strongly of the view that my constituents have an excellent case and that they be heard. “As Albion and Ardeer Community club’s Neil Head said, ‘it will be there forever and it’s really important we get it right now’.” A community meeting was due to be held on Monday for residents to discuss their concerns and the information at hand. Due to COVID-19 restrictions the meeting was moved online. A state government spokesperson has previously said it was making unprecedented investments in Sunshine.

Move to improve air quality AkzoNobel is hoping to have interim measures in place this week to improve air quality in Sunshine North. The company earlier this year was ordered by the Environment Protection Authority Victoria to install an air motioning program after complaints from nearby residents about odours and noise. The EPA said it had received an increased number of complaints from residents in the Sunshine North community throughout 2020. Investigations found the odour and noise was from the resin manufacturing plant of AkzoNobel, in McIntyre Road. AkzoNobel was previously issued with remedial notices in 2019. The company received an official warning from the EPA in 2020 for non compliance. In an email to residents, independent community engagement gacilitator Jen Lilburn, said she had been advised that AkzoNobel was expecting to have a carbon filter operational by the middle of this week. It’s hoped that the filter will make a discernible difference to air quality. Akz Nobel is in the process of building an air treatment system to control odour, which the supplier has said gets rid of 99 per cent of the smell associated with the resins. Sunshine College site to remain for education The former Sunshine College site in Ardeer will be retained by the department of education for future education use. The site has been unused since the end of 2019, when the college merged its campuses from four down to two. In the past five years the state government has sold off five school sites in Brimbank deemed surplus to its needs, but at this stage it is set to keep the Ardeer site. A Department of Education spokesman said the Ardeer site was being retained for future education use. “The department is considering appropriate interim use of the site in accordance with government land utilisation policy.” Brimbank resident Sam Chebib asked about the future use of the site during question time at the council’s April meeting. 6 BRIMBANK & NORTHWEST STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 8 June, 2021
Mr Chebib said the land offered a rare opportunity to be repurposed for community use and wanted to know whether it met the council’s assessment criteria for land acquisition for community use. Mayor Ranka Rasic said that at the time, the state government was yet to provide council with an update on its future plans for the Sunshine College Ardeer Campus. Last week, city development acting director Leanne Deans said the site was still zoned for education use. “The public use zone allows uses other than education to occur on the site as long as a planning permit is obtained for the proposed use and the application for a planning permit is accompanied by the written consent of the public land manager. “If a proposal is received, council will
assess it against the relevant provisions of the Brimbank planning scheme, however to date council has not received an application for any interim uses for the site.” The council says there are education needs in the municipality that need to be addressed. Community wellbeing director Lynley Dumble said secondary school education is a big issue for the council. “Council has completed a study on secondary school education needs in Derrimut which indicated there was potential unmet need in existing secondary schools across the wider area,” she said. “We have used this information to advocate to the state government in relation to school sites and their retention for community-based activities, services or programs.” Tara Murray

Jobless youth numbers soar By Tara Murray Youth unemployment in Melbourne’s west has grown to more than 20 per cent due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Western Melbourne Local Jobs Taskforce. Jobs for young people, women over 45 and refugee migrants are among those that have been hardest hit, according to Western Melbourne Local Jobs Taskforce head Terry Kennedy. Mr Kennedy, who is also a local employment facilitator, said there had been some negative
impacts of the pandemic across the west. “Youth unemployment is up around the 20 per cent mark in March this year, it was about 11 per cent before COVID-19,” he said. Mr Kennedy, who has worked in employment across the west for the past 10 years, said the taskforce will play a key role in helping to bring some co-ordination between employees, the three levels of government, recruitment and job agencies and training organisations. “We’re trying to get a co-ordinated approach to fill skill shortages in the west and get disadvantaged workers in roles, whether
through government investment or private investment,” he said. Mr Kennedy said the taskforce was looking to work with employers to gain opportunities for local workers. “They’re always calling for people in the health sector,” he said. “Whether it’s in hospitality, catering or transport, we’re always looking to get people in the region qualified for allied health types of roles. “Health is growing in terms of demand and services are increasing.
“Transport and logistics is also huge at the moment. Manufacturing in the region has gone up. There will be a big need for workers in construction in the next 10-15 years. “We’re working with some of the big companies as well to make sure local people are getting opportunities.” Brimbank council was to host a meeting of the taskforce late last month, but due to COVID-19 the meeting was held online. Mayor Ranka Rasic said the taskforce is a welcome step in contributing to the region’s economy, and creating more jobs.
Pandemic books help kids Children’s storytime has changed, with pandemic books being read during the COVID-19 crisis. Books such as Pandemic by Jackie French and illustrated by Bruce Whatley and Villony Virus comes to town by Janice McKay are being read at sessions hosted by Hobsons Bay Libraries. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said council had quickly moved to adapt. “Throughout the pandemic, we have invested in new books to entertain and inform such as [these],” he said. “I encourage families to jump onto the library website and book into the Stay-at-home sessions.” Werribee’s Daniela Lim has written a free online children’s book and video explaining the pandemic, Mia the Magpie and Rex the Rabbit fight the coronavirus. “Speaking to friends of mine with kids, I
realised that some children have been worried or anxious and parents did not always know what to say,” she said. “So, I created a book that would address what kids could do to stay safe without it becoming an overwhelming issue which they feel like they do not have control over.” Seabrook’s Charlie Golding has written a children’s book, When the world went inside: Talking COVID-19 with kids. “The most important thing for me, at the end of the book, is that there is a sense of hope,” she said. “Yes, we’re in isolation now and having to stay at home but it won’t be forever.” Hobsons Bay Libraries’ Stay-at-home Storytime sessions are on Fridays from 10.30-11am To register, visit https://libraries. hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/whats-on and an email will be sent with the link to participate. Coburn Ward with Julie Shannon This lockdown is an unfortunate reminder that we continue to battle the COVID-19 pandemic. My heart goes out to anyone who has been directly impacted by this virus, as well as those who are facing the challenges of lockdown, in particular local businesses who have had to slow or stop operations, and families who are working from home while supporting children in remote learning. It’s been a key priority of mine to investigate how we can make the most of the Melton Weir and I’m pleased to report that my recent
motion to Council was supported. We will establish a committee to help identify future opportunities for new infrastructure along the east side of the weir including paths, picnic areas, lookouts, and landscaping. I also recently met with representatives from the Salvation Army together with Council officers to discuss the issue of homelessness in our city. We’re hoping to see more State and Federal Government funding to provide localised responses that will support vulnerable people in our community.
Finally, I’d like to update you on some key community facilities that have made great progress this year. The MacPherson Park redevelopment is up to Stage Two which will include a fantastic new soccer pavilion. Meanwhile, Cobblebank Stadium is taking shape and is set to open later this year, and the new Melton Central Community Centre has officially opened. Building rainbow bridges In the Macedon Ranges, a new project is connecting queer people across the generational divide, writes Oliver Lees.
F
unded by the Australian government’s Regional Arts Fund and facilitated by Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health’s (SCCH) WayOut program, the Rainbow Bridges project provides a forum for young and old members of the LGTIQA+ community to share their experiences. SCCH project worker B usually specialises her work toward people more than 25 years of age, but said the idea to create an intergenerational program came after consulting her colleague, Mez, who typically runs programs for the youth.

“We felt it was important to bring people together and do something really meaningful,” B said. “There are few organised situations in which older and younger LGBTIQA+ people have the opportunity to come together and build a sense of shared belonging. “We wanted to give people positive role models, so that younger people could learn LGBT history from older people and vice versa.” The project began in 2019 as younger individuals were paired with older counterparts. After being disrupted through 2020 during the coronavirus lockdown, the program resumed and the pairs started to meet again. The project wrapped up with the creation of a photographic exhibition and video clips that highlighted the connections they had made. Mez said the final product did the project justice. “Across the board what was reflected in the film was the respect they had for each other, the reciprocity of it all was really important,” Mez said. “Everyone came together with an understanding and willingness to participate.

“And that was captured really well, I think many were actually surprised about how much they got out of the process and all of the interviews were quite different. “I think ultimately they felt seen.” As an older participant, Drew can attest to the value of the project. “In some ways there were a lot of commonalities,” he said, explaining his experience of getting to know the younger participants. “Obviously some of the cultural change is enormous. “I think that’s absolutely wonderful, the fact that most families accept homosexuality and that was demonstrated with the Yes vote. “But for kids that feel different, there are no obvious role models, so in order to grow up with a sense of belonging you have to find your
queer peers, and that’s the same today as it was for me.” Living in Bendigo in the 1970s, Drew lived with his partner and was open about his sexuality at a time when homosexuality was illegal. He attended St Paul’s Cathedral in the area, but said he decided to leave after feeling unwelcome. “On one occasion, the Vicar pulled me aside and told me I was living in sin,” Drew said. “I thought to myself, this seems to be more of a problem for you than it is for me, and I left.” Decades later, Drew was welcomed back into that exact same church group. In 2019, Drew married his partner, Noel, who is a member of the clergy at St Paul’s Cathedral in Bendigo.
“I’m accepted by that community now,” he said. “It’s quite bizarre, the church that I was estranged from is now something I love and am a part of, but it just shows how much things have changed.” Noel, who was also a participant in the program, said he had a much different experience, as he only came to terms with his sexuality later in life. “Once I realised, I had this terrific feeling of knowing who I am,” he said. “I’m now physically, spiritually and emotionally free, and I know I can fully love myself because I know who I am.” After running for two weeks at the Old Auction House, the photographic exhibit has been shifted to the SCCH office in Kyneton, where it will stay on permanent display. The project was celebrated with a private opening where participants, project workers and friends and families were invited to view the works. Younger participant and Sunbury resident Brittany said it was valuable to hear of the experience of others. “I thought watching the other interviews that it turned out brilliantly,” she said. “How much people [in the past] had to lean on each other and the fact they didn’t have as many safe spaces. “My friends have had quite safe spaces in comparison.” Looking ahead, Mez said this project was just the beginning. We have learnt so much and we definitely want to do more intergenerational things,” she said. “We recognise the importance of creating connections between community members.” The photographs can be viewed at the SCCH office at 1 Caroline Chisholm Drive, Kyneton from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. A giant in business and in life: A tribute to John Fenech The Brimbank community was left saddened by the passing of John Fenech, the well-known owner of Westside Real Estate on Alfrieda Street in St Albans. John, who was 74 years young, passed away on May 5 this year – just eight months after being diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumours (NETS) in the pancreas and liver. John led a rich and fulfilled life with his wife Mary, raising two daughters: Tracy, whose partner is Milad; and Donna, who has three children with husband Shane – Addison,7, Brayden,4, and Cooper, 18 months. John packed in plenty in 74 years. He arrived with his family in Sunshine West from the village of Mosta in Malta as a seven-year-old and grew up in the local area. His first job was with Netafolds, makers of nut and bolts, until the company closed down and he was left wondering what was next. The door of opportunity opened when Mary spotted an ad in The Advocate (the forerunner of Brimbank Star Weekly) seeking a real estate salesman who could speak Maltese. With nothing but his ability to relate to people (daughter Donna claims he could talk under water), a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn, John got the job and remained for the next 13 years, working his way up to branch manager. It was at this stage that he was encouraged to launch his own real estate agency, a step he took in 1996, opening Westside Real Estate and guiding it into the very successful business it is today. His family attributes John’s success in the real estate game to his genuine enjoyment of people, his innate honesty and trustworthiness, and his passion for helping clients find a home they love. His focus was people, not the transaction.

In life away from real estate, John was just as busy. His love of gardening was reflected in his large home vegie patch, a green oasis, where he grew “everything” but was especially known for his very large garlic. He was a keen fisherman, too. Any chance he got, he’d head out on Port Phillip Bay with his son-in-law Shane and catch squid and whiting that Mary cooked up for the family. He also kept a caravan at Portarlington where fishing was good, and loved his time deep sea fishing off Mackay in Queensland. Travel was another thing John really enjoyed. Apart from returning to Malta many times, John and Mary went on 10 cruises together, saw most of Australia, and travelled to Europe, Canada, the US – he especially loved San Francisco – Alaska, Japan and China. A staunch Western Bulldogs fan, John watched from the stands as his team defied all the odds and won the 2016 Grand Final, and he got to other games as much as he could. He was also a musician, playing the piano accordion in the Melody Makers band for many years, starting when he was just a lad. The band played at numerous weddings and other events where John’s smile was considered as infectious as his music. While John enjoyed the trimmings of success as a businessman, his greatest passion in life was his family. His grandchildren adored their Nunnu who was very hands-on and always generous with his time and care. His love and tireless support was a mainstay of the whole family, his legacy in his community is his example of a principled life well lived, and his presence is missed by all who knew him … Rest in peace, John Fenech. Ingredients 125g unsalted butter 200g chocolate buttons 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1 tsp vanilla essence 1 cup caster sugar 1 cup plain flour 1 tsp baking powder Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°C and line a 20cm x 31cm baking tray with foil and spray with cooking spray. 2. In a small saucepan, melt butter and chocolate over a low heat. Once melted, add eggs and vanilla essence and beat to combine. 3. Add sugar, flour and baking powder, stir well to combine then pour into the baking tray. 4. Bake for 30 minutes. 5. 1. Cut the bottom off the stockings. Keep a toe piece about 20cm long. 2. Shake some lawn seed into the toe of the stocking. 3. Stuff the stocking with moss, sawdust or potting mix until it’s about the size of a tennis ball. 4. Close the bottom with a rubber band. 5. Give your grass head a face using craft items, waterproof markers and anything else you like. Use rubber bands to create bubbles for a nose and ears. 6. Fill the cup with water and put the head upside-down on the cup, so the top is just sitting in the water. 7. Turn the head up the right way and sit it in a well-lit spot, out of direct sunlight. 8. Keep the top damp over the next few days (a spray with a water bottle is fine). 9. After about a week, grass shoots will start to sprout out of the top of the head. SPORT Lakers set to fire up for second half of season Caroline Springs is set to regain a few of its stars following the COVID-19 lockdown break in Western Region Football League division 1. The Lakers have lost their past three games, but pushed one of the pacesetters, Altona, in their most recent outing. Lakers football manager Marc Raak said while it was obviously disappointing not to be playing football at the moment due to restrictions, there was a silver lining out of having to sit on the sidelines. “The one positive out of it is that some of those injured players will return,” he said. “Will Young is our centre half-forward and has been out with an injury. He’s just started training again. “Brian Lake had a three centimetre tear in his calf. He has been training for a good two weeks by himself. There’s lots of players who have had one or two-week soft tissue injuries. The rest will be good for them.”
Raak said they had set individual player programs while they were locked down, with regular Zoom chats between the group. He said they had been focused on keeping the mood positive. The Lakers currently sit in sixth spot with a 3-4 record. Raak said they had started to play good football. “Hopefully we’ll be back playing some games soon,” he said. “We had those losses, but against Altona, a top two club, we only lost by five points and were moving forward. “We were starting to hit some form. “We didn’t have Lake or Young and Jy Lambley, our leading goalkicker. There will be pressure on for spots after the break. It’s a great position to be in.” Raak said they need to bank some wins in the back half of the season as they aim for fifth spot and their first finals appearance in the top
grade. During the first week of lockdown the Western Region Football League said that any games missed due to the pandemic would be cancelled not postponed, meaning a shortened season. Meanwhile, Lakers young gun Cody Raak was left slightly disappointed after not being picked up in the AFL mid-season draft. Cody has starred with the Lakers, Footscray VFL and the Western Jets this season. Marc Raak said Cody was remaining positive having known it was a long shot to be selected, with only limited picks. “He knows what he has to do and he has to keep working hard,” he said. “He got named in the Vic Metro squad which is a real positive for him. Sydenham sitting pretty By Tara Murray Everything was starting to go to plan for Sydenham Park in the Football Victoria state league 1 north-west competition before the latest COVID-19 lockdown suspended the league. After a less than ideal pre-season, Sydenham was putting it together on the park, sitting comfortably in the top half of the table. Coach Denii Lisolajski said that despite the competition being on hold, they were happy with where things were. “We are where we expected to be in the pre-season,” he said. “There was a big turnover from the 2020 squad and even in the pre-season players were coming in and out. “Going into round one we thought we were five or six weeks behind schedule … the aim was to keep in contact with the guys up the top and we have. “We were starting to hit form and then COVID-19 hit.” 22 BRIMBANK & NORTHWEST STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 8 June, 2021
Lisolajski said they had aimed to take maximum points in the four matches before the halfway mark of the season and had been on track for that. The other major focus for the club is the FFA Cup. The club is one of three state league sides to make it through to the final 16 of the Victorian stage. “The FFA Cup was another big thing,” Lisolajski said. “We wanted to get to the round of 16, which we had never got to before, and we’ve done that. “In our four walls of our club, we don’t fear anybody. There are a lot of quality players at Sydenham who are top tier players, NPL level players.” Lisolajski said the enforced break due to COVID-19 restrictions wasn’t the worst thing for the team. With restrictions being extended, at least two rounds of the competition will be missed due to the lockdown. “I don’t think it’s ideal for anyone,” he said. “But in terms of our boys, it’s good time to
have a break. We’ve had some injuries and a fairly hectic schedule, so it gives the guys time to recover and reset. “We handed out a program for the first week and with the extension of the lockdown, we’ll get in contact with every player individually and hand out another program. “The players are smart enough to keep themselves occupied and at the level they need to be for the rest of the season.” Lisolajski said they were set to get some players back after the break and there would be a lot of competition for spots. He said they were in the perfect position to continue their strong form. “It’ll be a heavy schedule as we have FFA Cup, as well as possible mid week games,” he said. “We’re in a healthy space and healthy environment from the top to the bottom. In a statement released last week, Football Victoria said it was continuing to work through rescheduling options for the two postponed rounds in metropolitan Melbourne.
Taylors Lakes has announced the ‘worst kept secret’ in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. The Lions, who finished bottom of the north-west division last season, announced that Trent Waring will return to the club as a playing assistant coach. Waring, who played his juniors at the Lions, has spent the past 14 years playing Victorian Premier Cricket with Greenvale Kangaroos. He played 187 matches for the Kangaroos, including 54 first XI games. He took 229 across his time at the Kangaroos. Lions president Rob Arnold said they were excited to have Waring back at the club in a playing capacity. “It’s the worst kept secret,” Arnold said. “We kind of knew towards the end of last season that he was going to play for us, but we couldn’t announce everything until he had ticked everything off. “He has a wealth of experience. We are really excited to have him come back. It’s been a long time coming for us.” Arnold said with such a young and inexperienced side, someone with Waring’s experience would help them close the gap. He said they could have used the experience last season, having lost a number of close games. He said most other clubs in the competition have had players come back after trying their skills at a higher level, which gave them a big advantage. “Ex-premier cricketers who have gone to the highest level and then for whatever reason have come back to their local clubs, which is really good for them. “I think Williamstown has at least three, Werribee has a number as well. We’re pleased Trent is coming back to give us that experience in our side.” Waring will be the club’s bowling assistant coach to help bring through the next generation of young fast bowlers. Waring already has a relationship with some of the younger players, having coached the club’s under-15 Craig Shield side last season. Arnold said Waring was the first of a couple of big signing announcements for next season, with more news to be announced in coming weeks. Tara Murray
