COVID drives down thefts By Alesha Capone Criminal offences recorded in Wyndham increased by 9.1 per cent in 2020, although burglaries and theft fell significantly as COVID-19 regulations restricted people’s movements. Victorian Crime Statistics Agency data released last week stated there were 18,284 offences reported to police in Wyndham during 2020, compared to 16,761 offences in 2019. More than 1370 offences related to COVID-19 restriction breaches in Wyndham. Inspector Brooke Walker said that during 2020, robberies decreased in Wyndham by 34 per cent, largely a “by-product of decreased offender movement and increased guardianship of property during the pandemic”. Burglaries and break and enters fell from 1337 offences in 2019 to 943 in 2020, while the number of thefts recorded dropped from 6311 to 5881 offences. Residential aggravated burglaries increased slightly from 135 in 2019 to 160 offences in 2020, but residential non-aggravated burglaries fell from 824 to 516 offences. “Since the easing of restrictions, police have noticed an increase in burglaries and car thefts however they still remain low,” Inspector Walker said. “We want to reassure the community that despite last year’s low numbers, police will continue to work hard to prevent and disrupt this kind of offending. “We continue to focus on known prolific and recidivist car thieves and burglars … Based on intelligence, police will continue to proactively task officers to patrol known hot spots at key times when we know this type of offending is likely to occur.” Homicide and related offences rose from four in 2019 to eight in 2020, while drug-related crime rose from 826 to 994 offences and sexual offences increased from 451 to 667. Assaults and related offences rose from 1471 in 2019 to 1664 in the 12 months to December, 2020. Family violence accounted for a majority of assaults, increasing from 904 to 1026 offences, with other types of assaults rising from 498 to 558. Overall, there was a 16.7 per cent rise in family violence offences recorded in Wyndham. Time for some colour Bollywood dance performances, carnival rides and market stalls will feature at a Holi Festival to be held at Tarneit Gardens Shopping Centre at the weekend. The event will also include free face-painting for children, food trucks, a DJ, roving entertainment and colour throwing. A fireworks display will be held at 9pm. The event is being presented by the shopping centre and supported by Multicultural Events Melbourne Inc (MEMI), which aims to bring communities together. Holi is a traditional Hindu festival, also known as the festival of colours or the festival of love. MEMI held its previous two annual Holi Festivals in Williams Landing, during 2019 and 2020. MEMI representative Pradeep Tiwari said the festival was being held at Tarneit Gardens this year to help support local traders in their post-COVID recovery. The Holi Festival will be held from 12-9pm on Sunday. The event is registered with the Department of Health and Human Services. Wyndham clinics roll out vaccine By Alesha Capone Six medical centres in Wyndham are offering the COVID-19 vaccine as part of the national phase 1b roll out. On Monday, staff at six GP clinics – The Doctors Werribee, Hoppers Lane General Practice in Werribee, Westgate Medical Centre in Werribee, Wyndhamvale Health Care, Myhealth Point Cook and Palmers Medical Centre in Truganina – began administering the vaccination to eligible patients, or were preparing to start vaccinations soon.

More than 280 other GP clinics across the state are also offering the vaccine as part of the phase 1b roll out, which will include senior citizens aged 70 and over and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 55 plus. Adults with some underlying medical conditions, such as chronic kidney failure, heart disease, chronic lung disease, diabetes, severe obesity and some neurological conditions, are also eligible. Clinical director of The Doctors Werribee, Dr Chamira Ranatunga, said the clinic started rolling out the AstraZeneca vaccine from

Monday, with patients able to book online or by phoning the clinic. “We will be offering about 100 vaccines a week,” Dr Ranatunga said. “This means we will be administering about 20-25 vaccines a day. I personally believe we are capable of providing more … if we do receive more vaccines per week.” Dr Ranatunga said The Doctors Werribee worked throughout the pandemic, managing patients’ concerns and illnesses. “We feel extremely privileged to be able to offer this vaccine to our community,” she said. “We believe this vaccine will be another

‘Unapologetically themselves’ Young creatives Betiel Beyin and Leigh Lule have written a comedy series which they are also directing and starring in. Beyin and Lule, from Tarneit and Wyndham Vale respectively, met through a Western Edge Youth Art theatre program. The friends, both 21, have worked with the Phoenix Youth Centre and Malthouse Theatre. Their latest project, CEEBS, is an IGTV mini-series supported by Signal Arts, a creative arts studio for young people. CEEBS follows the characters of Zion and Ruby as they attempt to find another pal who is willing to be the third wheel in their relationship. The series consists of four episodes which will be released via Signal’s Instagram account each week of April. Beyin and Lule have been filming the show in locations across Wyndham, Yarraville and Footscray. Both said they have enjoyed collaborating with each other for the project, along with producers Amie Batalibasi and Nikki Tran, cinematographer Ez Eldin Deng and actor/musician Yaw Dadzie. The talented duo said their series was aimed at residents of the west, youth and people from culturally diverse backgrounds. “Looking at the Australian entertainment landscape, there is literally nobody who looks like us,” Lule said. Lule said she loved acting because “it’s always fun to step into something else, a different world”. Beyin said she liked writing the characters and dialogue for CEEBS. “We want to make a show about two young black girls from the west side, who are unapologetically themselves,” she said. Boundary shake-up Residents living in Point Cook, Truganina and Williams Landing may find themselves living in a different federal electorate in the near future. The Redistribution Committee for Victoria released a document outlining its proposed changes to federal electorate divisions on Friday in response to estimated population growth within some electorates before January 2025. The Redistribution Committee has proposed the Lalor electorate gains Williams Landing from the Gellibrand electorate. Point Cook, east of Hacketts Road (currently in the division of Lalor) and Truganina would be transferred to Gellibrand. “The Redistribution Committee considered the Hacketts Road boundary as a sensible extension of the existing boundary through Point Cook,” the proposal stated. Altering the boundary between the two electorates would result in Lalor gaining 4824 voters from Gellibrand. Gellibrand, in turn, would gain 21,025 voters from Lalor. Lalor is presently represented by Labor MP Joanne Ryan and Gellibrand by Labor MP, Tim Watts. The commission’s final report will be tabled in Parliament. A series of free activities encouraging girls and women to get physically active will be held across Wyndham until Sunday. Wyndham council has partnered with local sporting clubs and physical activity providers to create a calendar of free activities for This Girl Can Week, which runs from March 21 to 28. The This Girl Can campaign is a VicHealth initiative which aims to inspire girls and women to engage in exercise. Wyndham’s active city portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard, said activities for the week included come-and-try events for yoga, Zumba, karate, table tennis, calisthenics, football and netball. “This Girl Can Week is a week where we celebrate and encourage girls and women to

embrace physical activity in a way that suits them,” he said. “We all know that exercising is important for our physical and mental health, however half of all girls and women aren’t getting enough exercise each week – and a big reason why is a fear of being judged, or not feeling fit enough to start. “Whether it’s a little or a lot, what matters is getting some movement into your day, and having fun along the way. Ambulance response times rise By Alesha Capone Code one ambulance response times in Wyndham have increased across a 12-month period, as the paramedics’ union expresses concern about the “massive effect” a heavier workload is having on emergency medical workers. According to Ambulance Victoria figures, the average code one response time in Wyndham during the second quarter of 2020-21 was 12.19 minutes, compared with 11.23 minutes in the second quarter of

2019-20. Seventy-eight per cent of code one call-outs in Wyndham were within the state government’s target of 15 minutes during that time, down from 83.3 per cent in the previous quarter. Code one call-outs are classified as life-threatening emergencies, such as cardiac arrests, heart attacks, strokes and serious car accidents. Ambulances in Wyndham responded to 2396 code one call-outs in the second quarter of 2020-21, up from 2350 in the previous

quarter. Response times to code two call-outs in Wyndham were on average 26.27 minutes in the second quarter of 2020-21, compared with 25.17 minutes in the previous quarter. Across Victoria, Melbourne recorded the highest number of code one call-outs which arrived within 15 minutes (more than 92 per cent arrived within 15 minutes, with an average response time of 9.06 minutes for a total of 2005 call-outs). A Victorian Ambulance Union (VAU) statement said increasing case numbers meant

paramedics “are regularly forced to work without meal breaks and … they can end up working 4-5 hours beyond their rostered finish time”. “We are seeing members at the point of exhaustion and sick leave is at an all-time high,” the statement said. Ambulance Victoria’s executive director of clinical operations, Associate Professor Mick Stephenson, said that up to 20 per cent of calls for assistance to triple-0 were not actually medical emergencies, and could be treated by a GP or pharmacist.

Making wishes come true Point Cook youngster Elise Gitau hopes to raise $10,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in the lead-up to a pageant final she will be participating in next year. Elise, 12, has been named the state finalist for the title of Miss Australia International Pre-Teen, to be held in February next year. She said she has been working on fundraising activities for Make-A-Wish Foundation, with the help of her mother Gladys. “I have started my Kids Walk for Wishes campaign and am currently working with my community to help with the fundraising,” she said. The Kids Walk for Wishes campaign will require Elise to walk 1000 steps on June 13. She is encouraging other children to join in her fundraising efforts by also walking 1000 steps, in a location of their choosing. Elise said wanted to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation because one of

her school friends sustained a neurological impairment after an accident. “On day we had a party with Make-A-Wish in our class and my friend was so happy and just lit up,” Elise said. “I want to make many more children just as happy.” Elise said she hopes to become an actor when she grows up. “Some TV shows and movies have put a smile on my face when I really needed it,” she said. “Then I realised, I could do that too.” Elise is also part of a drama specialism program at her school and a talented gymnast. She has represented her school at the Aerobics Gymnastics State and Nationals Championships three years in a row, as part of a team. Help for small business A Wyndham council fund which aims to support small businesses is open for applications. The annual Small Business Entrepreneurship and Innovation Fund has been specifically designed to support young businesses and start-ups within Wyndham. The program is also for more established businesses which are seeking to scale up or diversify their operations, to grow existing markets or enter new markets. The fund will allocate a total of $200,000 in funding to eligible businesses, with applications open for grants of either $2000, $5000 or $10,000. Wyndham’s future focused economy portfolio holder, Cr Mia Shaw, said the fund was building employment opportunities and providing local jobs. “While the intent of the program is to support businesses, equally important are the flow-on impacts of such growth including the creation of new jobs,” Cr Shaw said. Businesses which are run by sole proprietors or partnerships without employees can apply, along with businesses which employ five people or less. To be eligible for funding, the business must have its principal place of business in Wyndham; a current, active ABN; and be compliant with all relevant local, state and federal legislation. A Werribee South boat shed which has been in the one family for a decade is up for sale. The boat shed, which is about 40 years old but features modern amenities such as air-conditioning and solar panels, is located at 20 Campbells Cove Road. Lachlan Cron at O’Brien Real Estate Werribee is selling the boat shed, which offers beach views of Port Phillip Bay. “It’s unique, it’s waterfront and it’s perfect – just look at it, what’s not to get excited about?” Mr Cron said. Mr Cron said there had been plenty of interest expressed in the boat shed. “I’ve been overwhelmed with the amount of inquiries and calls in relation to the boat shed,” he said. “We’ve had a mix of potential buyers from the western suburbs as well as further afield. “We’ve had the property on the internet for just over a week and have recorded 23 email inquiries so far.” The listed asking price is $110,000 to $125,000. According to The Wyndham Boat shed Association, the first Werribee South boat sheds were built in the early 1920s at Bailey’s Beach (formerly known as Elliot’s Beach). After World War II, construction of the boat sheds increased, and was moved east from Bailey’s Beach to Campbells Cove. In 1977, the boat sheds were listed in The Heritage of the City of Wyndham database, for being of regional historical significance. Leakes Road and Dohertys Road in Truganina, along with Dunnings Road and Palmers Road in Point Cook, have been upgraded as part of the works. The Duncans Road and the Forsyth Road interchanges have also been finished. According to statements from Werribee MP Tim Pallas and Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly, early estimates indicate the upgrades to eight main roads, combined with level crossing removals in the west, are delivering time savings of more than 20 per cent for road users. Driving from Geelong to the Werribee Open

The state government has marked completion of the $1.8 billion-dollar Western Roads Upgrade. More than 1000 jobs were created across the project, with crews recording more than four million hours of work since the upgrade began in 2018. A program to repair and resurface 37 roads between Footscray and Werribee has also been delivered as part of the upgrade, incorporating recycled and reused materials.

Range Zoo, via the recently-opened Duncans Road interchange, now takes an average of 38 minutes instead of 54 minutes. The removal of a “dog leg” on Palmers Road has increased freight efficiency with preliminary travel times slashed by 22 minutes during the morning peak. The Western Roads Upgrade was delivered by Major Road Projects Victoria, in partnership with Netflow. “The overall completion of the Western Roads upgrade will provide better access for locals to shops, jobs and entertainment

precincts – making the west even more liveable,” Ms Connolly said. The state government also celebrated the removal of the Cherry Street level crossing in Werribee earlier in March, months ahead of schedule. The level crossing, which has been replaced with a road bridge, is the 46th level crossing removal in Melbourne since 2015. With the Cherry Street level crossing gone, crews are now building a new underpass at the site that will provide a connection for pedestrians and cyclists.

More COVID restrictions ease

Local baker rises to the top Peter Taylor is one of the best bakers in Victoria, but ever humble, he still says his mother is a better cook. Mr Taylor said he decided on a baking career while doing home economics classes at high school and learning to bake cake. “I eventually became good at it and started making better cakes than the teacher,” he said. “And then it just clicked … that this is what my career path would be.” Mr Taylor, 53, has been working at the Hogans Corner Woolworths in Hoppers Crossing for the past 15 years, and working for

the supermarket chain for three decades. Each year, in the lead-up to Easter, Woolworths runs a Baker of the Year competition. The competition compares the hot cross buns made by its in-store bakers across the nation, with the judging criteria including general appearance, volume, weight, crust colour, texture, crumb colour and aroma of the tasty treats. Mr Taylor has been a competition state finalist for the past two years. He took part in this year’s national finals last Thursday.

Mr Taylor said he was “very proud and humble at the same time to be nominated again for Victoria”. He said he loved his job because he enjoyed customer service and receiving positive feedback when customers liked his baked goods. “The challenge is to be able to keep up with the high standards,” he said. “[It’s] just taking care while baking, to provide the best product to the customers.”

Victorians can go mask free in some public places as the state government eases more COVID-19 restrictions from 6pm Friday, March 26. Acting Premier James Merlino and Health Minister Martin Foley yesterday announced changes to the COVIDSafe settings – the biggest change being that masks are no longer required in retail settings. Victorians will still need to carry a face mask with them at all times, and must wear one on public transport, in rideshare vehicles and taxis, and in sensitive settings including aged care facilities and hospitals. In other changes, Victorians will be able to host up to 100 people per day in their home, and outdoor gatherings in public places can increase to 200 people. Density limits in venues will still operate under restrictive settings, however the one person per 4 square metre rule will be changed to allow one person per 2 square metres. This affects cafes, pubs and restaurants. The 75 per cent cap on private and public offices will be removed. Following a successful first round of AFL, crowds will be able to increase to 75 per cent for round two. More people will be allowed in indoor non-seated entertainment venues, with capacity increasing from 50 per cent to 75 per cent. The limit of 1000 people per space will remain. Outdoor and indoor physical recreation or fitness class sizes will no longer have limits. Wyndham leads credit complaints By Alesha Capone More than 1200 Wyndham residents have lodged complaints about consumer loans, credit cards and housing finance across a period of more than two years. Consumer group CHOICE last week released an analysis of 31,000 complaints which the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) received about credit products, between November 2018 and December 2020. The complaints included concerns about irresponsible lending, charging of incorrect fees, poor customer service, fraud and unfair

terms and conditions. Residents of the 3030 postcode, which includes Werribee, Werribee South and Point Cook, made 682 complaints to the AFCA – the highest amount of credit-related complaints in the state. The 3029 postcode, which takes in Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina, recorded 587 complaints, the third-highest amount. CHOICE released the figures last Tuesday, the day a Senate committee was due to decide on a proposed federal government bill to roll back safe lending laws. More than 33,000 people, 125 organisations and 100 experts have released an open letter

calling on the federal government to refrain from rolling back the laws, which were designed to protect people from the sorts of lending practices seen during the global financial crisis and Banking Royal Commission. Organisations which have signed the letter include WEstjustice, AMES Australia, the Brotherhood of St Laurence, the Salvation Army, Anglicare and the Financial Sector Union. CHOICE chief executive Alan Kirkland said that “repealing safe lending laws is an extraordinary thing to do when many Australians are struggling in the wake of

COVID-19”. “The banks promised they’d clean up their act after the shame of the Royal Commission hearings but over 31,000 credit complaints show there are still huge problems in the system,” he said. “Right now, ABS data shows that mortgage lending is at record highs. This is fuelling a housing boom that is pushing home ownership out of reach of many more Australians. “Scrapping safe lending will land many people with large debts they can’t afford and take away their ability to receive justice.” The bill to roll back safe lending laws could be voted on as early as this week.

Super boats on show Entertainment, spectacular sport and tasty food will be on offer at Wyndham Harbour this weekend. The annual Offshore Powerboat Championships and Wyndham Harbour Food Truck will be held on Saturday and Sunday. The Australian Offshore Super Boat Championships will feature boats racing at speeds of up to 135km/h on the western shores of Port Phillip Bay at the Wyndham Harbour marina – the largest marina in the nation. The Australian Offshore Powerboat Club (AOPC) competition will include four offshore championship races and two offshore superboat races, plus two 65 miles per hour and 85 miles per hour races featuring both sports and ski boat entries. On both Saturday and Sunday, the Sport 65 and 85 Championships race will be held from 11.30am to noon.

The Offshore Superboat Championship race will run between 12.30pm and 1pm each day. Wyndham Harbour is located at 50 Quay Boulevard, Werribee South. New project gets residents job-ready An initiative has been launched to help Wyndham residents gain employment in the horticulture and land management industries. Wyndham council has partnered with AMES Australia and The Gordon Institute of TAFE to develop the Horticulture and Land Management Pathways Project. AMES Australia and The Gordon will each run a five-week and 10-week course respectively, to prepare participants with the skills and training necessary for a career in horticulture and land management. Following successful completion of the courses, graduates will be able to access supported recruitment opportunities with a panel of employers including Parks Victoria, All Green Nursery, Naturelinks and Wyndham City. About 15 places are being offered for each training program as part of the project. Positions are open to Wyndham residents only. The Gordon’s course, Horticulture and Land Management Skill Set, will run for 10 sessions between April and June. Classes will be held on Wednesdays from 10am to 2pm. Wyndham’s welcoming city portfolio holder, Cr Jennie Barrera, said the program was part of broader work under way to help Wyndham recover from the impacts of COVID-19. “Council is excited to partner with businesses, local service providers and community to support and develop training programs to upskill residents to be job ready,” Cr Barrera said. “The project connects local businesses with people looking for work and ensures candidates are ready and confident for their new role.

Cash boost for outdoor dining By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has secured $80,000 in state government funding to expand outdoor dining and support hospitality businesses in the municipality. Local Government Minister Shaun Leane last week announced the funding, which is being provided to help councils assist restaurants, pubs and cafes to continue COVIDSafe operations. The funding is part of a $5 million extension of the state’s $87.5 million Outdoor Eating and

Entertainment Package, which was released in September. Twenty-two councils across Victoria have received a share of the $5 million. Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich welcomed the funding. “Outdoor dining has become an important way of life for many residents in this post-COVID world,” Cr Hegedich said. “This latest grant from the state government will be used to continue our collaboration with businesses and support their broad and unique food offerings.

“This additional money will help maintain the very successful parklet trial that has been in place for the last six months. “With the support of businesses, we’ll be using the funding to attach roof structures to the six alfresco parklets in Hoppers Junction and the Werribee City Centre, to prepare for the winter months.” Cr Hegedich said the council would also purchase heating elements and roof lighting to support evening trading. “Since COVID and restrictions, Wyndham City has worked hard to install a number of

activations across Wyndham for all residents to enjoy,” she said. “These include the West End Experience in Werribee city centre, the installation of temporary cycle routes and pop-up parks at Point Cook, Williams Landing, Station Place and Soho Village. “Wyndham city has worked closely with local businesses and traders during this period, providing a range of support, including the waiving of many fees and charges.” Details: www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/ outdoortrading

Answering the call When storms hit and floodwaters rise, when people go missing or are trapped in crashed cars, the Victoria State Emergency Service swings into action. Volunteer Karl Sass spoke with Benjamin Millar about the rewards of helping people in a time of need.

or more than 40 years, the trademark SES orange overalls have been a regular and reassuring sight at times of disaster and despair. More than 5000 volunteers form the backbone of the organisation, providing emergency assistance to minimise the impact of emergencies and aiding recovery efforts. Melton SES deputy controller Karl Sass said becoming a volunteer with the SES more than a decade ago was one of the best decisions he has made. “I joined up because I thought it would be a great way to help out the community and be able to do things I wouldn’t otherwise be able to do,” he said. “It’s a really great way to meet people as well, so if you want to make new friends while giving back to the community, it’s great.” While the social side of being involved in the SES was one of the key attractions, the feeling of pride in being able to help people at their time of need is one of the things that keep Mr Sass coming back. “I think one of the great things about being in the SES is being there for people when they are having a really bad day,” he said. “It’s something that is always really positive, so we make sure the volunteers are well trained and capable and can respond and help out as much as we can.” SES is the control agency for floods, storms and landslides throughout Victoria, as well as providing the largest road rescue network. Mr Sass said he has been involved in a very wide range of callouts and events over his 11 years. “I’ve searched for missing people and been involved in different types of rescue,” he said.

“There have been a number of major flood and storm events too.” Each local area also has its particular risks, whether fallen trees or flooding. Mr Sass said one of the major local risk factors for the Melton and Bacchus Marsh areas is the residential areas in close proximity to waterways. “A lot of at risk areas are actually historical

areas rather than new areas, a lot of those areas were not designed with modern flood planning in mind,” he said. “Also, the growing population in our area means there is growing demand on the Melton and Bacchus Marsh units to be able to keep up with the growing demand, so it’s important to have volunteers available when they are needed.”

Climate change is another factor, increasing the likelihood and intensity of the kind of extreme weather events that lead to SES callouts. “We’ve seen increased weather events, whether storm or flood, and that’s making the potential range of risks likely more common in the future,” Mr Sass said. This increased storm activity and the booming population requires volunteers to receive training to prepare for a wide range of emergency response scenarios. “You are looking at everything from learning to use a chainsaw to using radios, knot tying and map reading – you’re taught so many different things in SES,” he said. “Personally I do everything from 4WD response to building collapse to chainsaw operations. There is really a role for everyone in the units, it’s just so diverse.” Volunteers come from a range of backgrounds and across a broad age range. Anyone aged 15 and above can volunteer, although permission is needed from parents for volunteers aged under 18. “We’ve got office workers, tradies, people who are retired, uni students, even families who have joined up,” Mr Sass said. “There are friendships to be made, it’s a really worthwhile undertaking.” Training takes place at the Melton SES unit headquarters from 7.30pm Monday nights. Melton SES will be holding an information session for potential new recruits on Thursday, March 25. A limited number of people will be able to attend in person and the session will be streamed as an interactive Facebook live event. HOKEY POKEY CHOCOLATE Ingredients 1 block Cadbury Caramilk chocolate 1 Violet Crumble bar Method 1. Cut the chocolate off the Violet Crumble and break up the honeycomb. 2. Break the Caramilk block into squares and put in a microwave-safe bowl. Melt the chocolate in 30 second bursts, stirring in between, until completely melted. 3. Add honeycomb to melted chocolate and stir to combine. 4. Pour mixture into a shallow tin lined with baking paper and refrigerate for 4 hours. 5. When set, cut chocolate into pieces and enjoy! Mercedes A-Class 2013 - 2019 By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring When Mercedes-Benz launched the A-Class in 1997 it was a stubby little car deliberately made to be shorter than any conventional four-door car. It wasn’t a success in Australia, nor did it work as well on the European market as anticipated. The third generation A-Class, sold here from March 2013, is larger and far more conventional in its style and is the one being surveyed here. Its style moved from being quirky and cute to the high fashion you would expect from a Merc. It has a bold front that, without too much imagination, carried styling cues to the high-performance SLS Gullwing and Roadster. Fascinatingly, Mercedes chose the A-Class gen-three to do a toe-in-the-water exercise for infotainment systems, with the 2013 A-Class being described at the time as, “almost an iPhone on wheels”. It had many high-tech features before the bigger Benz models got them as Mercedes felt that owners of larger Mercs were reluctant to adopt ‘fancy new stuff’. The idea was that younger owners of the A-Class would talk to their parents and older friends about the technology and how to use it. In January 2016, the A-Class received a facelift and tail-tuck, as well as additional technology, with all versions now having adaptive suspension and satellite navigation. Power for the standard models in the A-Class is by turbo-petrol and turbo-diesel engines in various capacities and power outputs. Note that the numbers like A180, A200 and A250 don’t indicate the engine size as used to be the case. The hot Mercedes-AMG A45 comes with a pumped up 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine to compete with the hot machines from rivals Audi and BMW. The AMG uses the company’s

4Matic all-wheel-drive system to maximise grip when pushed hard. Mercedes-Benz has been a major player in Australia for many decades. The dealerships are well set up and we have heard very few complaints about availability of parts. An A-Class with a full service record from a Mercedes dealer will probably be more expensive but it makes a lot of sense. Some factory-trained Mercedes mechanics have left the company and set up private workshops. We’ve heard good reports on them, but ask around owners in your neighbourhood for their opinions on them. Insurance charges are a little higher than average for a car in this price range, but not seriously so.

What to look for If there’s the slightest doubt about the

mechanical condition be sure to get a quote for repairs. These may be small cars but they’re in the prestige class for the price of repairs. Make sure the engine starts easily and is reasonably smooth in operation. Any hesitation to your use of the accelerator is a cause for concern. Make sure the services have been done by the date recommended or distance travelled – whichever comes first. Look for signs of body repair work. Ripples in the panels, most easily spotted by looking at them end on; also check for tiny spots of paint on non-painted surfaces; colours that don’t match exactly from panel to panel. Uneven front tyre wear could either mean the suspension has been bent against a kerb, or the car has been driven hard – or both. Have a look in the boot and its surrounds in case it has been used to cart bulky loads.
