Werribee tip sell-off plan By Alesha Capone A Wyndham councillor has suggested the council offload the Werribee tip if it can’t create a separate subsidiary to manage the site before the end of the year. Cr Josh Gilligan said the council had no cash reserves to upgrade the tip to attract private sector investment or transform it into a more environmentally-friendly operation. “If we fail to commence the process of structurally separating the RDF (Refuse Disposal Facility) by the end of this year, it is time to consider simply selling out of the facility altogether,” he said. 12486058-CG11-21

“Our failure to innovate and adapt in the face of seismic government intervention in the waste and recycling sector will see our city all the poorer in the years and decades to come.” Cr Gilligan made the comment at a public meeting last week during debate of the council’s financial report for July to December 2020. According to the report, the council saved $2.9 million on spending at the Wests Road tip from July to December because of a lower Environment Protection Authority levy and reduced spending on operations and materials during the coronavirus pandemic. The council can expect to save about $4.2 million in expenses related to the tip by the

year’s end, the report stated. Cr Gilligan said that creating a commercial subsidiary with its own board to manage the tip, as the council has done for Wyndham’s leisure centres, would lead to “bigger and better environmental outcomes and financial dividends to ratepayers”. The council’s strategic plan aims to transform the tip site into a precinct focused on resource recovery, with complementary businesses located nearby and “green jobs” for residents. The cost of the project is estimated between $20 million to $100 million, according to the Wyndham Refuse Disposal Facility (RDF) Strategic Plan 2019-2025.

Council’s director of city operations Stephen Thorpe said that when preparing the plan, the council “considered in detail its continuing involvement in the Refuse Disposal Facility”. “There is a goal to improve governance by investigating the establishment of a Local Government Business Enterprise, similar to the model for Western Leisure Services,” Mr Thorpe said. “This would provide a skills-based board to oversight the development and operation of the RDF as it transitions away from direct landfill to a more resource recovery and diversion model.” Wyndham council has owned and operated the tip since the 1970s.

Crossing plan ‘short-sighted’ By Alesha Capone Wyndham councillors have labelled the level crossing removal plan for Hoppers Crossing “substandard” and “short-sighted” for not including a disability access ramp to the station platform or a shared path over the rail crossing. The level crossing at Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing is being removed, along with the Cherry Street level crossing in Werribee, as part of a $355.5 million state government project.

The Hoppers Crossing removal will result in the existing crossing being closed to traffic and a new road built over the rail line, connecting Princes Highway to Old Geelong Road. At a meeting last week, Cr Jasmine Hill said Wyndham council should “urgently” write to several state government ministers to ask for a shared user path, for pedestrians and cyclists, to be built over the rail line to connect with the Federation Trail. Cr Hill said it was also “essential” that a ramp be built so people with mobility aids, senior citizens, parents with prams, cyclists and others

could access the station platform. Cr Hill said the existing crossing removal design was “sub-standard” . “Limiting a rail line crossing to only lifts and stairs at the train station presents barriers to many people in our community,” she said. Cr Jennie Barrera said a number of Chaffey ward residents had contacted her about the level crossing removal’s design. “I think it’s incredibly disappointing, that despite community consultation, that the design for Hoppers Crossing station is incredibly short-sighted and excludes – or

makes it, at the very least, incredibly difficult – for cyclists, residents with mobility issues and others to access the station,” Cr Barrera said. “It’s incredible in the 21st century, to me, that we would be designing something like this.” Cr Barrera said it was “incredibly short-sighted” to only have lifts in the design. “We’ve all heard the stories at Laverton station, we all know the people who are forced to get off at Aircraft when the lifts have been vandalised or when the lifts stop working.” The Level Crossing Removal Project was contacted for comment.

Let’s get physical It’s time for Wyndham’s seniors to get physical. The Active Ageing in Wyndham Program has returned and will kick-off on March 15. Wyndham council will run two, six-week programs across three venues – the Grange Community Centre, Eagle Stadium and AquaPulse. Each activity will cost $20 to participate in for the length of six-week program. Wyndham’s active city portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard, said that walking, yoga, aqua aerobics and chair-based exercises would be among the activities available.

“We know that 30 minutes of exercise a day for over 65s improves strength, mental health and cognitive function, increases energy levels, lowers risk of cardiovascular disease, and improves overall health,” Cr Maynard said. “Whether you join a walking group, fitness class, or any other organised exercise – it’s a great way to meet new friends and socialise.” Cr Maynard said that Wyndham was home to about 20,000 residents aged 65 and older, with this figure projected to double over the next decade. “The Active Ageing Program makes it easier

for Wyndham’s older adult population to be active by offering tailored classes close to home at a low cost,” Cr Maynard said. Wyndham is one of six councils in Australia to receive an Active Ageing grant from the federal government towards the project. Wyndham council has provided a total of $201,000 in rates rebates to residents receiving JobKeeker payments, across a six month period. The council last year voted to give residential ratepayers a $100 rebate, if they were in receipt of JobKeeper payments from the federal government. The policy caused controversy when it was first suggested by former councillor Intaj Khan in August last year. At the time, his fellow councillor Henry Barlow – who did not stand at the last municipal election – described the idea as “irresponsible”. Cr Heather Marcus also questioned why some residents, such as those receiving a JobSeeker payment, would not receive the rebate. Despite this, the council approved Cr Khan’s suggestion. At a council meeting last week, Cr Mia Shaw said it was “absolutely fantastic” to see that the council had granted rates rebates totalling $201,000 between June and December last year. “I thought it was worthwhile highlighting, there was some rigorous debate about this last term, but it was so great to see 2151 applicants applied for the $100 rebate on their rates’ notices,” she said. “A very worthwhile initiative in COVID … that has supported some of our residential ratepayers in a very difficult time.” Cr Shaw said that the council had also granted a total of $401,000 in COVID pensioner rates rebates. The council gave some pensioners a $50 COVID rates rebate, on top of the state government’s existing rebate.

Mercy Health welcomes reform By Alesha Capone and Tara Murray A not-for-profit organisation which runs a nursing home in Werribee has welcomed the final report from the Royal Commission into Aged Care in Australia. Mercy Health runs Mercy Place Wyndham, in addition to the Werribee Mercy Hospital and 23 other aged care homes across Victoria. Mercy Health group chief executive, Adjunct Professor Stephen Cornelissen, last week said the Royal Commission’s final report “invites the aged care sector to participate in a more

hopeful, compassionate and caring reinvention of the aged care system”. In the report, Royal Commissioners Tony Pagone and Lynelle Briggs called for an overhaul of the national aged care system, which was found to have “unacceptably high levels of substandard care”. The commissioners made 148 wide recommendations including a new aged care act; a plan to report on high quality aged care; a minimum quality and safety standard for staff time; and more funding. In a statement, Adjunct Professor Stephen

Cornelissen said: “Like others, Mercy Health is not above reproach or without blame from failings in aged care”. “We must waste no time in commencing the important work of responding to the recommendations of the Royal Commission. “We must prioritise any recommendations that can be implemented rapidly, while applying ourselves to delivering an effective response to the balance of the recommended changes. “Mercy Health is also committed to continuing to implement the changes that

we have under way and planned, many of which were delayed or interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.” Adjunct Professor Cornelissen said some of the changes include caring for the elderly in a way that upholds and protects their human rights. “Over the coming weeks, Mercy Health will review in greater detail the full report of the Royal Commission,” he said. “We will outline our call to action, stating what we intend to do with regard to the recommendations within our remit to change.”

It’s easier being green Are you keen to keep your local area clean and green? Wyndham council has installed three cleaning cabinets along Werribee River to help residents do a quick clean-up, to help the environment and create a tidier outdoor space. The cleaning cabinets can be found in Presidents Park, Chirnside Park and at Werribee South. The March theme of the council’s Green Living Series is ‘Keeping Wyndham Clean’. As part of the series, which will be ongoing throughout the year, an E-Waste Drop Off Event will be held at the Arndell Park Community Centre in Truganina on Saturday, March 20 from 10am – 1pm. Residents will be able to take electronic waste such as televisions, computers, stereos, printers – plus kitchen, bathroom and outdoor appliances – to the centre, to be recycled free of charge.

Wyndham’s climate futures and environment portfolio holder, Cr Robert Szatkowski, also encouraged residents to consider joining one of the volunteer-run clean-up groups which operate in Wyndham. Cr Szatkowski said the groups usually run a clean-up session about once a month. He said that groups such as Love Our Street, Wyndham Litter Warriors, Beach Patrol and Werribee River Association were always looking for more people to help out. Master plan looks to future for Manor Lakes A $15.88 million proposal to install a cricket oval, six tennis courts and running tracks at the Manor Lakes North Reserve has been given the thumbs-up by Wyndham council. The council last week voted to invite public feedback on a draft master plan for the 8.13 hectare reserve site in Holyoake Parade. The draft, aimed at guiding the development of the reserve over the next 10 years, includes construction of a pavilion, car parks, play spaces, a kick-about area and quiet spaces. Cr Mia Shaw said the draft master plan was

important for the Manor Lakes area and she looked forward to receiving feedback from the community. Cr Jennie Barrera said that in addition to sport, recreation and other leisure activities, the Manor Lakes North Reserve would provide opportunities for visitors to connect with nature. She said that due to Manor Lakes’ growing population, which includes many residents from culturally diverse backgrounds, she hoped people of all nationalities would provide

By Alesha Capone A Tarneit residence with six bedrooms, a theatre area and its own nursery has set a new price record for the suburb. The property, at 413 Morris Road, was sold for $1.225 million last month by Abhi Elawadhi and Kamlesh Kamani from Reliance Real Estate. In November, the duo sold a house in Scarborough Court for $1.14 million, which was the previous record price for Tarneit. Mr Elawadhi described 413 Morris Road as the “Toorak of Tarneit”. The house is set on about 998 square metres. Its features include an automated car garage with an inbuilt car hoist and an outdoor entertainment area, complete with a pizza oven and spa. A “huge nursery” in the garden is filled with plants valued at $20,000. Mr Elawadhi said the property sold after being on the market for less than a week. “We had a terrific response with more 70 inquiries, from across Melbourne, including Frankston, Reservoir and Altona,” he said. “Also from a lot of local Wyndham residents, who have their businesses nearby.” Mr Elawadhi said that the family selling the house wanted to upsize. He said there was plenty of demand for bigger properties, due to more people working at home, post-COVID. Figures released by property information and analytics provider CoreLogic show that in the 12 months to February 28, median house values in Tarneit rose by 2.5 per cent to $595,083. Houses in Point Cook increased by 2.6 per cent to reach a median of $703,401, while Truganina houses increased in value by 2.5 per cent to a $615,488 median. Williams Landing house prices increased 2.3 per cent to hit a median of $666,537; Werribee houses grew by 1.9 per cent to $538,818; and Hoppers Crossing by 1.6 per cent to a median of $559,739. Wyndham council’s chief executive Kelly Grigsby has resigned to take up a position as chief executive at the city of Hobart. Ms Grigsby, who has been Wyndham council’s chief executive for more than five years, said that leaving the role had been a “difficult decision”. “It has been an absolute honour to serve the people of Wyndham and lead an organisation filled with talented, passionate and dedicated staff,” Ms Grigsby said. “I am certain that, together with the mayor and councillors, Wyndham city will continue to put the community first in everything it does as it emerges from COVID and moves towards a bright, dynamic and inclusive future.” Ms Grigsby has served at Wyndham council for more than eight years, initially as director of community services, before being appointed to the chief executive role in 2016. Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said that Ms Grigsby has been a great champion of the municipality during her time as chief executive. “Kelly has transformed the way we do business here at Wyndham, ensuring our workforce is agile, empowered and future-focused,” Cr Hegedich said. “Her leadership during the past year of uncertainty has helped guide the organisation and the community and led the sector in terms of pandemic response.” Cr Hegedich will work with the council’s People and Capability and Governance teams to begin the recruitment process for a new chief executive. Pavilions upgraded Three Wyndham sporting pavilions are set to get a revamp after the council awarded contracts for upgrades. The Virgin Mary Mosque in Hoppers Crossing will open its doors to the public at the weekend. The mosque is inviting families and individuals to visit as part of the Victorian Mosque Open Day initiative. The Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV) helps to organise open days at mosques across the state each year, in an effort to develop a friendly, neighbourly and cohesive community environment. The open day will provide people with an opportunity to experience first-hand the Hoppers Crossing mosque’s religious and cultural practices and ask questions of its members.

WorkSafe has launched a six-week campaign highlighting farm deaths and life-changing injuries. WorkSafe executive director of health and safety, Julie Nielsen, said the campaign aimed to show that accidents could happen to any farm worker or owner, even people with years of agricultural experience under their belts. “Farmers owe it to themselves, their families, their workers and communities to always keep safety front of mind and make it a permanent part of their daily life,” Ms Nielsen said.

Visitors will be able to enjoy a tour around the mosque, showcasing some of the initiatives it has been running and how it has been contributing to the development of the community. There will be food, children’s activities and cultural performances. Everyone is welcome to attend the open day, which will be held on Sunday, March 14 from 10am to 4pm. Wyndham hungry for data By Alesha Capone Residents living within two Wyndham postcodes are leading demand for faster broadband services within Victoria, according to a new study. The Australian Digital Consumer Study 2021 – conducted by technology analyst firm Telsythe – has identified the top five postcodes in the state, where residents are seeking higher-speed National Broadband Network (nbn) plans. The number of Victorians choosing

broadband plans with peak download speeds of 100 Mbps and above grew by 113 per cent in the 12 months to January this year, while average data downloads grew by almost 19 per cent in the same period. The 3030 postcode, which covers Point Cook, Werribee and Werribee South, tops the list of Victorian areas where people are taking up faster broadband services. Figures from the nbn show that 6186 households within the 3030 area are on internet plans of 100 megabits per second (Mbps). The 3029 postcode, which covers Hoppers

Crossing, Truganina and Tarneit, placed second, with 6047 households on 100Mbps plans. The 3064 postcode, which takes in Craigieburn, Donnybrook and Mickleham, was third with 5302 households on 100Mbps plans. The Telsyte study stated that the top reasons people signed up for 100Mbps plans, or even faster internet speeds, included a desire to access more online applications simultaneously; stream more online video content; stay connected with friends and family; and because they are spending more time working from home.

Chief customer officer at NBN Co, Brad Whitcomb, said that demand for data on the nbn network showed Australians were continuing to increase their reliance on broadband for work, learning and entertainment. “We expect this trend to continue to 2021 as people continue to adopt new connected devices and entertainment subscriptions and aim to optimise the online experience for everyone at home,” he said. “With more devices online at once, a faster broadband plan can help improve experience for the connected household.”

Coach pulls up stumps The Little River Redbacks Cricket Club is searching for a new coach. Nic Fairchild is stepping down from the position because of work commitments and to devote more time to his young family. However, he plans to continue playing with the club. Cricket club president Doug Fairchild, who is Nic’s father, said Wyndham residents were welcome to apply for the role. “Out of three teams, probably a third of our players come from the Wyndham area,” Mr Fairchild said. He said a few other players hailed from the wider Melbourne area, including Altona. Mr Fairchild encouraged people who have played quite a bit of cricket, or held positions at other clubs – but not necessarily coaching roles – to apply for the position. “Past experience is great but if you don’t have any, we’re happy to have a look at everyone’s

applications,” he said. Mr Fairchild said that Nic did not have any coaching experience when he started in the role two years ago, but he has helped Little River become more successful at a competitive level. Last year, the club’s A grade team just missed the finals – this year they finished on top of the ladder. The coaching role is a paid position and the club offers an incentive program for A grade players. Mr Fairchild said the new coach would need to be available to attend training on Tuesday and Thursday nights, plus games on Saturdays. Women choose to challenge By Alesha Capone Female leadership was celebrated at two International Women’s Day events in Wyndham last week. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly and Lalor MP Joanne Ryan on Friday each hosted sessions to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD). Speaking at her event in Werribee, Ms Ryan acknowledged the theme of 2021’s IWD “Choose to Challenge” . “As your local member of federal Parliament, it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the challenging time at the moment in Canberra for all women,” Ms Ryan said. She praised Australian of the Year Grace Tame, an advocate for survivors of sexual abuse, and Brittany Higgins, a former Liberal staffer who has gone public with allegations she was raped by another staffer in 2019. “In the spirit of International Women’s Day, I am hoping – and will continue to push – so that these challenging times do lead to genuine change for women in all walks of life, not just in halls of power in Canberra,” Ms Ryan said. During the event, Ms Ryan also announced the Lalor Woman of the Year – Truganina Fire Brigade community safety co-ordinator and multicultural liaison officer Michele Abbott. The Lalor IWD Business Award went to the owner and director of Child’s Play Early Learning Centres, Sam Johnson. Lalor’s IWD Community Award winner was Neha Kope, who helps to organise the annual Wyndham Holi Festival of Colours and the Spiritual Melbourne Ganesh Festival. Singer and author Jo Lally was announced as Lalor’s IWD art category winner.

Almost 100 people attended Ms Connolly’s IWD event in Tarneit, including the Minister for Women and the Prevention of Family Violence Gabrielle Williams. Both Ms Williams and Ms Connolly spoke of how glad they were that work such as healthcare, aged care, education, retail and hospitality – fields where many women are employed – was acknowledged as “essential” during the coronavirus pandemic. Ms Connolly also remarked on how pleasing it was that a majority of women were elected as Wyndham councillors last year, including mayor Adele Hegedich, Cr Jennie Berrera, Cr Jasmine Hill, Cr Susan McIntyre and Cr Sahana Ramesh, all of whom were present on Friday.

Vaccine rolled out Frontline medical staff at Werribee Mercy Hospital began receiving the coronavirus vaccination on Tuesday. Residential In-Reach nurse John Stafford was the first employee to receive the jab, with about 500 staff members vaccinated across the day. Mercy Health Group chief executive, Adjunct Professor Stephen Cornelissen, said the experience of the past 12 months has demonstrated an urgent need to invest in Werribee Mercy Hospital’s capacity to continue providing “the best and latest” care in areas such as emergency, maternity and general medical care. “John and the staff at Werribee Mercy Hospital have been on the front line fighting

coronavirus for 12 months, they know as well as anyone the critical role the hospital and our staff played in protecting the community from an even greater spread of infection,” Adjunct Professor Cornelissen said. “The pandemic has shown how effectively our staff can respond but it is vital that we keep pace and fully respond with the scope of services required and deserved by our communities.” Werribee Mercy’s nurse unit manager Angela Cook is overseeing the vaccination roll-out at the hospital, which has been designated as a Western Health COVID-19 vaccination hub. Ms Cook said that the vaccination program could run for several months at the hub.

Centre name creates debate By Alesha Capone A bid to name a new Tarneit community centre after a long-serving Wyndham councillor has been knocked back. At last Tuesday’s council meeting, Cr Josh Gilligan asked his colleagues to consider naming a new $9.5 million community centre in Congo Drive after former Wyndham City and Werribee Shire councillor John Gibbons, who served the municipality from 1983 until last year. A report to the meeting said representatives of the Werribee District Historical Society, KU Children’s Services (which will provide early education and care at the centre) and

council staff had identified potential names for the new community centre, to be released for community consultation. Councillors supported seeking feedback on naming the centre the Chaffey Channel Community Centre, which refers to a historic irrigation channel that passed through the site, and Dianella Community Centre, which refers to a flora species indigenous to the area. However, Cr Gilligan urged councillors to select a different name. “I don’t think the community are very interested in naming a community centre after an irrigation channel, is that the best we’ve got?” Cr Gilligan said. William and George Chaffey “played a very important role in this city” by developing historic irrigation plans for the area. “To say they’re not important in the foundations of our city is quite wrong,” she said. “I feel very upset to think we’re overlooking brilliant treasures of this city by ignoring them and going with other people.” Although Cr Gilligan’s suggestion was not supported by a majority of councillors, he

reintroduced the matter during the urgent business section of the council meeting. He also said the council should consult the community about renaming the Tarneit Community Learning Centre after former prime minister and Lalor MP Julia Gillard and suggested the Central Park Community Centre in Hoppers Crossing could be renamed in honour of Wyndham’s first female mayor Pat Goodwin. A majority of councillors voted that it did not qualify as urgent business and the matter was not publicly discussed at the meeting. Boyd joins Sons of the West Mental health advocate and former Western Bulldogs star Tom Boyd is helping spearhead this year’s Sons of the West program when it kicks off later this month. Since hanging up the boots at the end of the 2019 AFL season, the premiership player has openly discussed his own experience battling mental health. Boyd will join each Sons of the West group for a session dedicated to decreasing stigma and encouraging those who need help to reach out. “I am excited to be involved once again in the Sons of the West program in 2021 and can’t wait to be a part of the great value that it provides to our communities,” he said. Boyd said last year’s lengthy COVID-19 lockdowns and the continued fallout of the global pandemic mean there has never been a more important time to shine a light on mental health. “If 2020 taught us anything, it’s that things change quickly, and being able to deal with the stress associated with change is more important than ever,” he said. “With this in mind, a huge priority for all of us moving forward is taking care of our mental health, looking after our physical health and investing in the interpersonal relationships we have in our lives and our communities.” Widely considered to be Australia’s most successful men’s health program, Sons of the West has been delivered annually by the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation since 2014. The free program runs in partnership with local councils across the west, educating men on important issues that impact their health. Mental health is a key topic alongside nutrition, gender equality and intercultural understanding. Keen to make a difference By Alesha Capone Nicole Bagatsing enjoys volunteering because it helps her make friends, use her time meaningfully and learn new skills. The 22-year-old has been announced as this month’s One Wyndham award recipient. The council award recognises residents aged between 12 and 25 who contribute to the community and are role models to other young people. Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich described Nicole as “a leader in Wyndham’s youth space” who “works tirelessly to raise awareness around the issues young people care about”. Nicole said that receiving the One Wyndham award “is a privilege and I’m very grateful for it”. “I first moved to Wyndham when I was 16, to be given an award from the council is an honour,” she said. Nicole said she started volunteering during high school, as a tutor at a Wyndham primary school. “I’m the type of person who finds meaning and fulfilment through experiences,” she said. “I also love meeting new friends who are passionate about contributing positively to the community. “Interacting with people from different walks of life has made my life more meaningful.” Nicole has a diverse range of volunteer experience under her belt, and she was recently accepted as a board member for the Connection Arts Space and Community organisation. “I’ve also signed myself up to becoming a camp leader for Edmund Rice Camps Victoria,” she said. “My other community involvements include being a volunteer for Pedro & Corazon Yaneza Wellness Society and Give a Textbook

Tarneit Rise school expands Tarneit Rise Primary School pupils will soon get a new state-of-the-art, double-storey relocatable classroom. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly announced the modern double-storey relocatable building, and said it would give the school the flexibility to manage enrolment growth. The relocatable building includes double-glazed windows, improved thermal insulation to reduce heat loss and acoustic insulation to reduce internal noise reverberation. It has also been built to an energy-efficient design. “We are delivering a modern, multi-storey relocatable building for Tarneit Rise Primary School because we know that quality infrastructure gives our students and teachers the learning environments they need to achieve their best,” Ms Connolly said. The new portable building is the fith double-storey relocatable classroom that Tarneit Rise has received since 2019, as part of the state government’s Relocatable Building Program. Across Victoria, the state government is investing $114.5 million to deliver relocatable school buildings to schools This will provide an additional 12,775 spaces for students during the 2021 school year. It is anticipated the 2020-21 Relocatable Building Program will create more than 200 jobs in manufacturing and related industries.

MY WYNDHAM Deborah H Dickinson is president of Kulture Hive, a not-for-profit organisation in Williams Landing which runs social cohesion programs and job training. She is also a life coach. She chats with Alesha Capone.

What personal development did you experience? The personal development I went through came from a place of realising I had success without fulfilment. I went into a bit of a spiral myself, asking: ‘Was I worthy?’ I felt passionless. I kept saying to myself, ‘I have done 25 years, I don’t have 20 years to start again’. I went to do a neuro-linguistic programming training program. It was my own first experience of having breakthroughs … where I realised the things I wanted were possible, that everything was possible. Then I realised there were so many people I had to help, who were successful but passionless. I did three courses to become qualified for what I do now.

What do you like about living in Werribee South? The beach, the water. My background has always very much been about Mother Nature. I do love the fact that you get off the highway, drive to Werribee South through the (Werribee Park) gardens, everything is flat and you can see the water. Do you do any volunteering? I’m actually on the board of Kulture Hive, here in Wyndham city. I’ve been vice-president and now I am president. I am also on the board for the Hayden Butler Foundation, which is aimed at suicide awareness and prevention. As I’m in coaching, I use my expertise and skills, looking after education and running workshops and things like that. How did you get involved the Hayden Butler Foundation? It actually started when I created my business and wanted to be in a space of helping. It wasn’t until I became more involved that I realised how impacted many people are by suicide – through wider family and work colleagues, if not immediate family members. I very much realised I had been impacted too. What inspired you to start volunteering? For me, it needed to start off with a community base. I must admit, it all came from asking: ‘How can I help?’

Tell me about yourself. Where I am right now as a mindset and life coach, how I got here was by going through personal development. I was in the corporate world for 20 years. I’d started on the factory floor and worked my way up to general manager in Sydney, and they brought me to Melbourne to run a site here. I moved to Wyndham in 2012, to Point Cook. I am in Werribee South now, it’s beautiful here. I am originally from New Zealand, and of Maori descent. In my early twenties I moved to Australia, that’s how I landed in Sydney. I have three sons of my own, two step-sons and three grandchildren.

Werribee Local Government Association has joined the fight to prevent the EPA from establishing a dump for toxic waste at Avalon, near the airfield. The association is annoyed that this is another instance where something objectionable has been imposed on the western area of Melbourne because no other area would have a bar of it.

A berthing pier and storage depot for hazardous materials at Point Cook will not be built if the Werribee Council has its way. The proposal to build the depot came to light earlier this year when the state government released a paper which looked at relocation possibilities for most of Melbourne’s port facilities.

University in 2021 As a new university year begins, online learning is returning. Tara Murray spoke with students from Victoria University about the ups and downs of university life during a pandemic.

oseph Gattellaro didn’t expect his first year of university to start at home. The first year student from Tarneit, who is enrolled in a double degree in psychology and criminology, has been restricted to online classes as COVID-19 continues to limit the ‘normal’ university experience. “The main thing was I wanted to go on campus,” he said. “It’s all online at the moment, so that isn’t going to happen. The social inclusion is part of the uni experience and being online, you miss a huge chunk of that.” As someone who suffers learning difficulties, Mr Gattellaro said being able to get back into the classroom is vital. He said he and many of his friends suffered last year as they studied from home while the state was locked down. Fellow VU student Oliver Kaiser, who is in his third year of a criminal justice degree, said he found the online experience quite unique. He said he didn’t know how he would have coped if he had been starting university in the middle of the pandemic. “2020 was really different,” he said. “I benefited from studying at home, my grades got better. I was more involved in the co-curricular stuff over Zoom than in person. “I’m now in the student union.” Mr Kaiser said the big difference he found was that after classes online, he was still switched on and stayed on the computer. On campus, he would normally have headed home straight after class. While his grades have been on the rise, Mr Kaiser said he would love to return

to the classroom. “The vibe is off online,” he said. “I want to get back in the classroom, as I really enjoy that energy.” Victoria University Vice-Chancellor Adam Shoemaker said the key for the university at the moment was being able to provide students with the best opportunity possible for their learning.

- Adam Shoemaker “Our polytechnic space is really important for Sunshine and St Albans especially, as a lot is on the campus,” he said. “We have well over 1000 students who have started the last couple of weeks for that. “We are doing a lot of things for the higher [education] section that can be done online. If you have to be in-person we can facilitate that, but if you can be online, we make that the preferred option.” Professor Shoemaker said despite the uncertain times, VU had seen an increase in student numbers studying in the block model – studying one subject at a time. He said the ability to work your study around your life was a key to the success of the program. “Quite significantly, people are applying to study at the university directly as undergraduates in the block which is fantastic,” he said.

“People are realising that the university has to respond to their work and lives, and as you know, in the last year a lot of people have lost their jobs or working part-time, so it’s a wonderful time to reposition their career and that is what the block is great for. “You can accelerate the study if you want to or you can slow it down if you want to and you can match it to your life. “It’s not about how many people start, it’s how many people finish.” With Australia’s borders effectively closed as a result of the pandemic, Professor Shoemaker said VU had seen a decrease in the number of international student enrolments. He said the longer international students were prevented from travelling to Australia to study, the more students they would lose. “If you spoke with every university in the country, they’ve lost students as the borders are effectively shut,” he said. “In Victoria, many thousands of people were already here having travelled the year before, so what we are seeing now is a gradual reduction. “The students from last year are now in their second year and there’s not a new group of people coming, “It’s the lack of new starting students that you’re noticing. Some are in fact doing online study, but that can’t go on forever.” Professor Shoemaker said VU tried to provide support to the international students who are still in the country, many without any income. Zeel Patel was one of those students. With little help from the government, she wasn’t sure if she wanted to stay in Australia.

Going home to India, didn’t seem like a good option either. “It’s almost been one year of uni online,” she said. “To be frank it has been really hard with the government not willing to help international students in Melbourne during stage four lockdown. “I lost my jo,b which was a bit hard.” Ms Patel, who has since started a new job, said the whole experience had been tricky, but Zoom classes getting easier as time went on. She said studying from home did add some flexibility, but like many other students she’s keen to return to the classroom. Victoria University too is keen to see more students and staff back on campus. Professor Shoemaker said the uni was looking to bring more students back to campus for semester two. “It’s always governed by government health advice” he said. “We’ve taken the view that we’ll have a default setting, that where possible we’ll be online until the end of June and then if things improve, we’ll gradually look at getting people back. “It’s important to have clarity and consistency.” Professor Shoemaker said while ’COVID normal’ was a bit unpredictable, the university still has big plans for the future. “We want to be the best dual sector university in the world,” he said. “We want to see the twin wings of the polytechnic and higher ed working together, with the block and being famous for doing it.”

Hyundai ix35 2010 - 2015 By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Most Hyundai ix35s are used as family wagons rather than SUVs. In all-wheel-drive format they can be driven on mild forest trails. In August 2012 the ix35 received a mild facelift and satellite navigation was introduced in the Elite and Highlander variants. November 2013 saw the arrival of the Hyundai ix35 Series II. Mechanical updates included new direct-injection petrol engines and revised suspension. The turbo-diesel remained virtually unchanged. Projection headlights with LED positioning lights, aerodynamic roof rails and striking new alloy wheel designs certainly changed the appearance. Significant suspension changes to suit Australian conditions and drivers’ desires were made in the Series II. It has revised coil springs and stabiliser bars front and rear. A major upgrade was the use of a solid-type sub-frame mount to a more flexible bush-type system. The latter giving better isolation of impact harshness and vibration and sharper steering. Three trim levels are offered: Active, Elite and Highlander, with a choice between 2.4-litre petrol and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines. The topline Highlander is pretty upmarket for its class, with a panoramic glass roof, leather trim, powered and heated front seats, a rear-view camera, dual zone air conditioning and a topline audio system. There’s also keyless entry, Aux and USB port with iPod connectivity, steering wheel mounted audio and cruise control. There’s good leg and headroom in all seats. Cleverly, the rear seat is on rails to slide back or forward to permit juggling of seat/luggage space. Shoulder room in the back is marginal if you want to carry three adults of average size. The

size of the multiple stowage areas inside the cabin is impressive. Even with all seats in use the Hyundai ix35 still has a generous luggage capacity of 591 litres. This increases to 1436 litres with the rear seats folded down. The loading platform isn’t too high off the ground and the shape of the cargo area makes it easy to access. Hyundai has become a major player in Australia in the recent years. No longer the maker of cheap ‘n’ cheerful hatches it has an extensive range of models in various categories. As a result of this expansion the emphasis on quality customer service has also grown, as has the number of dealers. We’ve had no real complaints on availability of parts and prices are about average for this class. These are relatively simple vehicles, at least by the standard of the early years of the 21st century, and most good amateur mechanics can do a fair bit of work. Don’t tamper with safety items, though. Insurance premiums are about average for this vehicle type and there doesn’t appear to be

a lot of difference from company to company. Oddly, the Hyundai ix35 replaced the Hyundai Tucson when it was launched in 2010. In a backflip the new model of August 2015 was again called the Tucson.

What to look for Check out the door trims, carpet fit, including in the boot and the backs of the front seats. Look at the condition of the engine oil by checking the dipstick. If it’s too dark the servicing may not have been done on time. The turbo-diesel engines should start within a few seconds, if not there may be problems. Definitely one for a professional inspection. Make sure the automatic transmission shifts gears quickly and without any shuddering, A\ and that you think it’s in in the correct ratio for the conditions. If there’s any doubt, have it looked at by a transmission specialist at their premises. Manual gearboxes that are reluctant to change or crunch during shifts may have had a hard life. SPORT Aiming for the big time For Bol Dengdit, the opportunity to play basketball for Australia is particularly special – the 18-year-old had never played basketball until he moved to Melton from South Sudan when he was 12. At 15, he was invited to a basketball camp in Canberra and has never looked back. Now a member of the under-19 Australian extended squad, he is hoping to be selected in the final team for the World Cup to be held in July. “When I came to Australia, I only played soccer,” he said. “At school one of my classmates said I was pretty tall and to come and play basketball … I fell in love with it. “Everyone encouraged me to play basketball and I loved it and kept playing. It’s all about basketball now, I grew too tall for soccer. “It would mean a lot to play for Australia,

especially where I came from.” Dengdit took part in a four day camp with the rest of the under-19 squad recently. Speaking before the camp, he said he wasn’t surprised to have been selected in the squad, as he is part of the NBA Global Academy, an elite basketball training centre at Basketball Australia’s (BA) Centre of Excellence based at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra. “At age 15, I got offered one of the NBA Global Academy camps and a couple of camps for the ADC [Australian development camps]. “It felt good and showed me different options than just going to the states and stuff [for high school].” Dengdit, who was recognised while playing for the Longhorns Basketball Club, is the latest in a number of players to be produced by the

club, which is based at Sunshine. Former Longhorns player Kuany Kuany, who is now in college in America, was one of Dengdit’s idols. He says it’s nice to now be someone others can look up to. “When I go back to Melbourne I want to pass that on and work on that and be a leader and encourage other kids. Deng Adel [another former Longhorns player] is in the NBL and it’s good for the kids to see. It feels good to be a role model. I try to give advice and be a leader and show they can make it as well. “I was in the same situation as them.” The future is looking bright for Dengdit, who made his first state team last year, and he’s keen to make the most of it. Ieremia creates a Storm By Tara Murray Former Sunbury Tigers player Dean Ieremia has landed a contract with the Melbourne Storm for the upcoming NRL season. The reigning premiers announced last week that Ieremia, who had been on a development contract with the club, had been promoted to the senior squad for this year. The 19-year-old grew up loving both AFL and rugby league, being a Richmond and Melbourne Storm fan respectively. Ieremia started playing rugby with the Sunbury Tigers when he was 11. It was his coach at the Tigers who recommended he try out for the under-14 Victorian Thunderbolts side. The rest is history. “One week after the trial I found out I made the squad at full-back,” Ieremia said. “I developed through the system in the under-15s, 16s, 18s and the 20s … which is when I was picked up by the Storm.” Ieremia played for the Storm in the NRL

Nines competition last year. In doing so, he became just the second born and raised Victorian to play for the club. Ieremia said teammate and star full-back Ryan Papenhuyzen is his number one influence on the field. “Paps is a talented player but his work ethic around the game motivates me as a young player to put my best foot forward in everything I do,” he said. “To be honest, I’ve learned a lot from everyone in the Storm system, not only game-related things but things outside of footy – the importance of family for one.” Ieremia scored a try in the Storm’s recent practice match against Newcastle. He will be contending with Reimis Smith, Isaac Lumelume and George Jennings for the right wing position position. Storm general manager of football Frank Ponissi said it was very pleasing to see another Victorian junior become part of Storm’s top squad.

He said they would be looking to extend Ieremia’s contract beyond this season. “NRL Victoria has done a great job in developing Dean through their junior grades and then into the Thunderbolts system,” Ponissi said. “They identified him early on as a player with potential and he is starting to vindicate those predictions. “Unfortunately he missed out on basically a year of football in 2020 but the time he spent with us in what was largely a training role throughout that season, and the continued improvement he has shown during this pre-season, has warranted this upgrade to our top 30 list. “He will continue to work hard on his game and push for a spot in the game day 17.” Ieremia is the 28th player signed by the Storm for their 30-man squad. Melbourne Storms kicks off its season on Thursday at home against the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Some of north-west Melbourne’s best talent has joined Western United for its inaugural National Premier League 3 season. United is fielding both a senior and under-21 team in the NPL for the first time as it continues to grow its pathway from juniors through to the A-League. The NPL season kicks off for both sides on March 21. NPL senior coach Ante Moric said he was pleased with the squad so far. “The first two weeks have been really positive,” Moric said. “We’ve had a chat with the boys and the mindset and the culture that we’ve spoken about has been great. “The boys don’t know each other, which is hard, but they’ve come in and they’re believing, they’re working together. Most importantly there’s a togetherness here, I can see it already. “That’s the framework of becoming a successful football club.” Players from across Melbourne’s north-west are among the 29 players in the senior squad. Caroline Springs’ Abel Walatee, Atwood’s Giovanni Stellitano, Delahey’s Sebastian Neceski, Meadows Heights’ Peter Lay, Mill Park’s Luka Krstevski, Rockbank’s Eligian Kifle, Wyndham Vale’s Sabit James, Kealba’s Samuel Ghobrial, Werribee’s Charlie Emery, Sunbury’s Nathan Dib, Hoppers Crossing’s Ajak Deu, Lalor’s Jake Anagnostopoulos, Truganina’s Manylauk Aguek, St Albans’ Adisu Bayew and Taylors Lakes’ Rhys Bozinovski are all part of the squad. Former New Zealand international Vaughan Coveny has been appointed head coach of the under-21 team. United’s general manager of football Ante Kovacevic believes the NPL squads will be a breeding ground of future Western United footballers. “Establishing our NPL teams is vitally important to the club. It will provide opportunities to the next generation of footballers to feed into our A-League team,” Kovacevic said. “We want to have these young players provided with an elite environment that helps instil the values and expectations of a professional football club.” The Western United NPL program will be based at City Vista Reserve in Caroline Springs.
