Serving up thanks There were smiles all around when The Coffeeologist re-opened to customers last week, following a four-day shutdown after a customer tested positive to coronavirus. The coffee shop posted on its Facebook page that the risk of anyone catching the virus from the customer was “really low” but that the premises would shut for a deep clean and re-open once all staff tested negative for COVID-19. The Coffeeologist re-opened on Thursday, offering free coffees to thank the community for the many messages of support it received on social media during the shutdown. Cafe owner Luciano Xhuti said the messages helped ease his worry that the coffee shop, which opened in September 2019, might lose trade after the closure. “Everyone was so happy to see that we’re back, they all said how much they missed us,” he said. Mr Xhuti said the cafe was kept busy on Thursday, serving more than 500 cups of coffee. “A lot of customers did offer to pay, were putting money in the tip jar, and bought a muffin or croissant as well,” he said. Vaccine roll-out begins By Alesha Capone Residents at aged care homes in three Wyndham suburbs will be among the first in the country to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. According to the federal health department, phase 1a of the roll-out, which began this week, will start with aged care centres in 44 suburbs and towns in Victoria including Werribee, Hoppers Crossing and Point Cook. Aged care homes in Altona Meadows, Ballarat, Cowes, Drouin, Lara and Delacombe have also been included in the first week of the roll out. Hundreds of aged care residents, staff and

people connected to Wyndham aged care homes were diagnosed with COVID-19 last year. More than 300 cases were linked to the Baptcare Wyndham Lodge Community in Werribee, 118 cases to the Mecwacare John Atchison Centre Hoppers Crossing and 113 cases to the Glendale Aged Care Facility in Werribee. A spokesperson from Allity Aged Care, which runs Glendale Aged Care, welcomed the roll-out of the vaccine. “Protecting our residents from COVID-19 has been our priority since the pandemic began,” the spokesperson said. “As such, we welcome the opportunity for Glendale Aged

Care residents to be among the first to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in Australia.” The federal government has advised that Victoria can expect to receive about 11,000 vaccine doses per week during the initial roll-out, although this will be dependent on supply. Distribution will begin with the Pfizer/ BioNTech vaccine, while the AstraZeneca/ Oxford vaccine is expected to be ready from early March. The first vaccination hubs in the state will be based at Sunshine Hospital, University Hospital Geelong, Austin Health in Heidelberg and the Monash Medical Centre Clayton.

Frontline healthcare workers, such as paramedics and hospital staff, will be among the first to get vaccinations at these hubs. Western Health will manage the Sunshine Hospital hub. Chief executive Russell Harrison said that an expert team of Western Health staff have spent weeks planning and recruiting staff for the vaccination hub. Western Health will also manage a range of other vaccination clinic locations, including one to be based at Werribee Mercy Hospital. As of December 1 last year, Wyndham had recorded 2266 cases of coronavirus, the highest in the state.

Dangerous dog numbers rise By Alesha Capone The number of menacing and dangerous dogs registered with Wyndham council has increased across 12 months. The council’s director of city operations, Stephen Thorpe, said there are 14 dogs in the municipality that have been declared dangerous, five due to attacks and nine which are classified as guard dogs. Mr Thorpe said a further 19 dogs have been registered as menacing, bringing to 33 the total number of dangerous and menacing dogs

registered with council, up from 26 in April last year. In Victoria, councils can declare a dog as dangerous if they have bitten or attacked a person or animal, resulting in death or serious injury. Councils can declare a dog as menacing if they are recorded as rushing or chasing a person in an aggressive manner (such as snarling and growling within a three-metre radius of a person). Dogs can also be declared as menacing if they bite a person or animal, resulting in a

non-serious injury. Canines of any breed can be declared dangerous or menacing. Mr Thorpe said that in 2020, the council received 58 reports of dog attacks on people and 76 reports of attacks upon animals. “These figures are lower than 2019, when we received 69 reports of dog attacks on people and 129 reports of attacks on animals,” he said. Mr Thorpe said council officers used a variety of enforcement measures when a dog attack was reported, depending on the severity and circumstances of each individual incident. “These can range from setting an animal

management plan, the dog being surrendered by their owners or legal prosecution,” he said. On January 8 this year, a five-year-old girl was bitten by a dog in the front yard of her home in Ostend Crescent, Point Cook. The dog belonged to a friend of her brother. The dog bit the girl near her nose when she was patting it. Mr Thorpe said the council “has thoroughly investigated the incident and the events leading up to it”. “An animal management plan has been put in place with the dog’s owners.”

Upgrade for Warringa Park School

Internationally-renowned street artist Julian Clavijo will paint a new street art mural in the Hoppers Junction Precinct, as part of Wyndham council’s COVID-recovery strategy. The council has commissioned the large-scale artwork to be created on an exterior wall opposite Powell Drive Reserve. Clavijo is known for his colourful realist paintings which explore themes of childhood joy, curiosity and innocence. Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said the mural would give a new look and feel to the Hoppers Junction area, and provide another incentive for people to support local businesses. “Council has previously done murals as part of placemaking and always try to work closely with the businesses when we do so,” said Cr Hegedich. “Public art is an important part of creating vibrant, liveable and prosperous places. “It remains a council priority and we will continue to work with businesses and artists to achieve more beautiful outcomes. “The Hoppers Junction precinct is a must-do this summer, with relaxed alfresco dining and new street art to come and see.” Cr Hegedich said the council has also supported activations and events such as the Summer Symphony and West End Experience, as part of collaborative initiatives to help businesses and jobs in Wyndham. The activations also include parklets, temporary cycle routes and pop-up parks at Point Cook, Williams Landing and Soho Village. Hoppers Junction business owner, Aimee Helu from the Jock and Mack cafe, has welcomed the mural initiative. “The mural design which has been curated for the area will become the statement piece of Hoppers Junction,” Ms Helu said. “We are also excited for the community of Woodville to have such a beautiful piece of artwork at their doorstep. “We encourage everyone to come down, grab your phones and blow up Insta with your mural pictures using #hoppersjunction.” Street artist Julian Clavijo. Warringa Park School in Werribee South is set to undergo a $7.97 million upgrade. Werribee MP Tim Pallas visited the school’s Cayleys Road campus last week to announce that architecture firm Morton Dunn has been appointed to design the project. The upgrade will involve construction of the school’s stage two master plan, including removal of three relocatable buildings for the creation of classrooms, an art room extension, a library fit-out, and construction of a new shed and vocational store. The school’s former art west building will be turned into a student support room and a meeting room. “Warringa Park School families are a step closer to getting the great local school facilities their kids need to thrive,” Mr Pallas said. “We’re making sure that our schools have the best facilities, our classrooms have the best teachers and that every child is given every chance to succeed.” Last year, Mr Pallas announced that the Cayleys Road campus would undergo a $14.09 million transformation to accommodate 181 students in a dual-mode special school/special development school. “These local upgrades are part of the school building boom that is happening right across Victoria,” Mr Pallas said. Ruffling feathers The ostrich flock at Werribee Open Range Zoo is stirring things up in an effort to keep cool. As temperatures climbed last week, eight female ostriches made the most of a fresh sand pad. The birds ruffled their feathers and scooped their necks to produce a cooling cloud of sand and dust. Zoo savannah keeper Ashley Field said ostriches have a special method to regulate their temperature. “Ostriches have a number of veins under their wings, so in summer they stretch out and circulate the cooling air and dust where it’s needed most,” said Ms Field. “We refresh their sand pads regularly through the hot months to encourage the behaviour and provide another

cooling option in hot weather.” As part of the Summer with Wildlife initiative, Zoos Victoria has compiled a number of resources to provide Victorians with information on how they can help wildlife during summer and hot weather. Ms Field said everyone could do their bit to help local wildlife stay cool and keep hydrated. “We hope that when our visitors see the ways we care for our animals during summer, they’re reminded to leave out shallow water baths in backyards or balconies for the birds and small mammals that share their neighbourhood,” she said. Helping hand for student By Alesha Capone Thomas Carr College graduate Ating Maker has been granted a prestigious scholarship to support her tertiary studies. Ating, 18, completed her VCE at the Tarneit school last year and will soon commence a bachelor of science at the University of Melbourne. Ating is one of 20 students across Australia to receive the university’s Hansen Scholarship, which provides students with up to $108,000 for accommodation and educational costs. The scholarship is administered by the Hansen Little Foundation, which is headed by Melbourne University deputy chancellor Jane Hansen and Australian Grand Prix Corporation chairman Paul Little. To qualify for the scholarship, students must achieve an ATAR of at least 90. Although Ating’s ATAR score was 89, she impressed the scholarship panel so much that they decided to grant her the scholarship. “Jane was so lovely, they called and said, ‘We saw your ATAR, it was so incredibly close, it would be cruel to not give the scholarship to you’,” Ms Maker said. “I was in shock, I started crying. I told my mum and she started crying.” Ating, a refugee from South Sudan, said she has worked in retail for the past few years because she wanted to support herself. She said she hoped to complete her science degree and then study medicine. “I’ve got my heart set on becoming a doctor, my father passed away from malaria overseas when I was very young,” she said. “I want to become a doctor and travel overseas to share my knowledge and insight to help prevent these diseases.” Ating said she wanted to thank the foundation for its generosity.

New tools to find a trade An initiative which aims to help women gain employment in trade has been launched in Wyndham. Tradeswomen Australia (TWA) and the Tradeswomen Australia Community Foundation (TWACF) last week announced the Wyndham Pathways Project, which will focus on demographics including women recovering from trauma, indigenous women, refugees, asylum-seekers, women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and women with a disability. The Wyndham Pathways Project is being supported by Wyndham council, the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Fund and Victoria University. The program will include six sessions between March and June, to be held on Saturdays, with one three-hour workshop per month. The workshops will introduce participants to a variety of roles within the trades industry, give them knowledge about these roles and develop relationships with mentors. TWACF chair Janet Cribbes said that participation of women as apprentices and trainees in the non-traditional trades, especially construction, automotive and electrical, has remained at less than two per cent in Australia across the past 25 years. Head of the Wyndham Pathways Project, Katie Yates, said women would finish the program with ideas about how to pursue future employment. Mrs Menzel, a counsellor of more than 20 years’ experience, runs her own private practice, works as a principal consultant for a company which provides counselling to employees and acts as a clinical supervisor to other counsellors. About a dozen people camped out in their cars to be among the first in line to purchase a residential lot in a new housing area of Tarneit last week. The potential buyers were keen to land one of 35 blocks in the first release of Villawood Properties’ Alamora estate. The hopeful landowners had been in their vehicles outside the Sayers Road sales centre in the days before Victoria was sent into a five-day coronavirus lockdown on February 13. Villawood fast-tracked sales to campers before the lockdown came into effect, then took deposits online after the lockdown began. When construction is complete, the 2000-lot Alamora estate will be home to an $8 million resort-style residents’ club, parks, sports reserves, public art and the west’s largest display village. The Alamora sales centre received more than 200 inquiries in the weeks leading up to the official sales launch. More than 160 people attended a weekend pre-sales opening. Villawood chief executive Alan Miller said the response was “very significant”. Villawood executive director Tony Johnson said demand for lots in Alamora demonstrated the real estate market’s underlying strength. “We believe the scope for innovative, quality residential growth across Melbourne, Victoria and indeed Australia, is undiminished by the current economic difficulties,” he said. “We’re the only developer to launch five new developments during the COVID lockdowns and the market has responded more favourably than even we’d hoped. “We’ve pushed forward with our construction works, with new stage releases across different projects, and similarly we’re pursuing new acquisitions.”

Passing on traditions By Alesha Capone Greek senior citizens from the west are being invited to submit a family recipe for a cookbook which will celebrate the traditional food and memories of first-generation migrants. PRONIA, a welfare society for the Greek community, is putting the cookbook together with the help of funding from the Western Region Aged Care Foundation, as part of its post-lockdown engagement programs to help tackle loneliness and isolation among the elderly. PRONIA community projects leader Sonya Tsakalakis said people aged 65 and above, from a Greek background, who live in the Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Brimbank, Maribyrnong, Moonee Valley and Sunbury areas, are invited to submit a recipe. The cookbook, to be titled Almonds in the Olive Grove, will include the personal stories of those who submit recipes and participants will have their photos taken at Philhellene, a Greek restaurant in Moonee Ponds. Ms Tsakalakis said that PRONIA is hoping to collect about 30 recipes for the cookbook. “We are getting some really wonderful recipes, it’s great,” she said. She said that many of the recipes submitted have a unique regional flavour, such as an orange cake with filo pastry called portokalopita; stuffed green peppers and moussaka. Ms Tsakalakis said she enjoys talking to the Greek senior citizens who submit recipes. “Just to hear the delight in their voices, that people are interested in their stories, is wonderful,” she said. Call out for water-wise tips City West Water has launched a competition encouraging customers to share their best water-saving tips around the home. The competition held throughout February aims to inspire the community to continue using water wisely. ‘Crucial upgrade’ to sewer system A new pumping station has been constructed in Werribee as part of a $12 million project to help meet the demands of a growing population. The West Werribee Sewer Pump Station initiative also included installation of a new sewer line under the Princes Freeway to divert sewage from the existing site to the new station. The new pumping station has been located away from residential dwellings to reduce potential noise, odour and disruption during maintenance activities and is expected to help

It will be expanded in the future, allowing it to pump 1200 litres per second. City West Water’s general manager of infrastructure and delivery, Amanda Smith, said the upgrade would help supply essential sewerage services to the rapidly-growing Werribee population. “The new pumping station is City West Water’s third-largest sewerage pump station and secures reliable and vital sewerage services for those living and working in Werribee,” she said.

“The pump station can now service an additional 60,000 new dwellings, which is a crucial upgrade, especially with the nearby development, Riverwalk estate.” The new pump station receives sewage from local properties which is transferred to Melbourne Water’s Western Trunk Sewer, before ending up at the Western Treatment Plant in Werribee. City West Water partnered with head contractor Quinn Civil to undertake the construction works.

Spotlight on creatives Wyndham council has launched a new grant program to support artistic residents deliver workshops at municipal community hubs. The Workshop Delivery Grant is part of the council’s COVID-19 recovery response and aims to support local creatives. The council has allocated more than $10,000 to the initiative. Applicants can apply for up to $1000 in funding. The funds can be used to offset costs to participants, pay for materials, venue hire or as a facilitator fee. The workshops can be a one-off or a series. Mayor Adele Hegedich said the arts and creative industries were one of the sectors hardest hit by COVID, and are still being impacted today. “The Workshop Delivery Grant is an excellent opportunity for local creatives who had to postpone workshops in 2020 due to COVID,” Cr Hegedich said. “The grant is open to all art forms, for

example, dance, visual art, ceramics, writing, theatre, photography, film, or music.” Wyndham’s creative city portfolio holder, Cr Marcel Mahfoud, said: “The creative workshops will enable residents to come together after a challenging year to collaborate and increase the exposure of local artists. “This is also what our community spaces are designed for, to inspire and to be places of connection.” Applications for the Workshop Delivery Grant will close 9am on Monday, March 1. Winds cause window blowout By Alesha Capone A Tarneit resident was shocked after recent strong winds caused a bedroom window to collapse in her house, leaving a “massive hole” in the wall. Michelle, who did not want her surname used, said she feared the cave-in could have caused a serious injury or fatality if someone had been hit by the falling window. Michelle and her partner moved into the house, which they purchased off the plan, in November 2019. The window collapsed on January 25, about 1.10pm, on a day in which Melbourne

experienced wind speeds up of to 54km/h. Michelle said she only found out that the window had fallen after receiving a call from her neighbour. “When we came home, there was a massive hole in our bedroom … the window was 1.8 metres by 3 metres,” she said. “We set up our computer next to that window and my dogs love to sleep by the window because of the breeze. “Just the thought of that happening when we were at home and if the window fell on any of us, it could easily cause serious injuries.” Michelle said that a builder, building inspector and subcontractors she had since

contacted about the window all said: “I have never seen anything like this before”. “Both the subcontractors and building inspector told me that the window was only attached by small fixing nails and there were no proper screws sighted to secure the window properly,” she said. “They explained to me that supposedly there should be screws on each side of the windows and the top as well to ensure the window is secured against the frame.” Michelle said she was speaking out to “inspire others to ensure their builders install their windows the proper way”.

Help with school costs Wyndham mother Leanne Pelen says that saving up for her daughter’s back-to-school costs has been easier this year, thanks to a financial education program. The Saver Plus initiative, which is delivered in the Werribee area by The Smith Family, was developed by the Brotherhood of St Laurence and ANZ. Under the program, participants who make regular bank deposits across a 10-month period are awarded up to $500 in matched savings by ANZ. Parents are required to use the $500 on items for their children’s education, such as laptops, uniforms, shoes, backpacks and stationery. Saver Plus participants also take part in four financial education workshops. In 2020, 110 people from Werribee and surrounds took part in the program. Ms Pelen said that before participating in Saver Plus, she struggled to find the money

needed to pay for her children’s school expenses. “When my son went to high school a few years ago, I found that I was underprepared financially, I didn’t realise how much it would cost and it was a real struggle,” Ms Pelen said. “With my daughter going into year 7 this year, I wanted things to be different. “With the money from Saver Plus, I was able to buy her uniform weeks before she started school, as well as buy her a laptop. The program was a huge help.” Schools in Wyndham have praised the positive impact Saver Plus is having on families. MY WYNDHAM Barbara McLure is the chief executive of the Committee for Wyndham (C4W). She chats with Alesha Capone. Tell me a bit about yourself ... I have spent most of my working life in Melbourne’s west as an accountant, banker and manager working in regional economic development, banking, small business development and education, as well as consulting overseas. My strong connection with Wyndham goes back a long way. Because I have always been business-focused in my work, one of my first stops was to the Economic Development Unit at Wyndham City Council and I have always admired their work with the business community. I am proud to say that I have been involved with the Wyndham Business Awards since they were established in 1995 and have been judge each year since then. For someone who doesn’t know about the Committee for Wyndham, how would you describe it? Our mission is to bring together business, community, government and individuals to work together to promote and enhance the social and economic wellbeing of the broader Wyndham community. Underlying all our work are the people of Wyndham. Although we are a small organisation our reach is large which means I get to engage, work with and talk to people who are focused also on making Wyndham a great place to do business, live, work and enjoy. What are some of your main duties, in your role as the chief executive? As I tell people C4W is a small organisation, so even though I have the flash CEO title I’m a

worker like everyone else. If something needs to be done, it gets done. I report to the C4W board so I make sure they are across what we are doing internally. I operate on a basis of no surprises. Along with the chairman, I am often the public face, I am nearly always the first point of contact and I am the person who rings people in our community and asks for things: ‘Can you be part of a panel for Business Connect Wyndham, I need a guest speaker for our leadership program, can you help … please?’ Being based in Werribee, what do you like most about the area? I really like the people of Wyndham. As I move around the city I talk to people, find out what they do, how connected they are into their community and how passionate they are. Do you have a favourite place to get a coffee, or grab a bite to eat, in Wyndham? If I’m meeting someone for coffee I usually ask them to take me to their favourite coffee shop and to be truthful this means I have enjoyed good coffee in lots of places. I must admit I do enjoy lunch out with Shadowfax and The Park Hotel always providing great food and service. Would you like to add anything else? My message is to get involved, step-up, engage, connect. Your community needs you. Wyndham is a growing and diverse community and full of really good people working towards making our community strong, happy and ready to grab those opportunities as they fly past us.

At the Coroner’s Court last Thursday, Mr Kevin G. Mason, SM, found that the car in which Kerry Bibron, 18, of Mossfiel Drive, and Gary Alush, 20, of Diggers Road, died on 4 Octber last year, was travelling at almost 180kmh (110 mph) when it hit a tree in Duncan’s Road, Werribee South.

Making history Mia Smith has made history in the Western Region Football League, becoming the first transgender player to be granted permission to play in any of the league’s competitions. She spoke with Tara Murray about what it means to be able to take to the field for North Sunshine’s women’s side this year.

ia Smith never had aspirations to play with North Sunshine in the Western Region Football League women’s competition. Smith, who is transgender, joined the club as a supporter and was happy watching the club’s women’s team from the sidelines. She started to help out where she could and last year joined the club’s committee. That led to a few training sessions with the Roadrunners, and sparked a dream to one day pull on the jumper in a game for the club. That dream is now a reality. The WRFL recently granting Smith permission to play for the Roadrunners women’s side this season. A WRFL spokesperson said Smith was the first transgender player to take to the field in the league. Her approval to play was granted under the Australian Football League community football gender diversity policy. “It’s so amazing,” Smith said last week. “I’m flying high. “The club has been absolutely tremendous. The club hasn’t seen me as a trans person but as a person.” Smith said it was special to be the first transgender player to take to the field in the competition. “It’s pretty mind blowing,” she said. “I know a lot of transgender playing at the moment and to be the first in this league would be awesome.” Smith first formed a bond with the Roadrunners at her former workplace, Pride of our Footscray Community Bar, when team members dropped in for a drink.

She said that as the team was supporting her in her work, that she would support them on the field, and went to watch them play. “I just went along to support them,” she said. “I would watch them play four players down … win or lose, each week they played as if there was a point or two in it. “The players are so amazing and I’m in awe the way they do it.” Smith joined in training sessions last year before COVID-19 shut down the season. She returned to the field again with the team ahead of the upcoming season.

“I had no interest in playing footy until a few years ago,” she admits. Smith, who is 53-years-old, said she hadn’t played any sport, including football, since finishing school. She said she would love to play a couple of seasons. “I don’t want special rights, I just want equal rights,” she said. “The committee, and especially the women’s team, has been amazing. I’m so lucky I bumped into them, it’s been life altering.” North Sunshine club president and former

women’s coach Rob Telfer said inclusion is what community football is about. Telfer was among those at the Footscray bar the night Smith first met the women’s team. He was honoured to present Smith with her jumper at training recently. “This just shows how far football has come,” he said on the club’s website. “It [football] should be open to everyone, that’s what our club is about, giving everyone a go. “When I got the news I was proud; proud that it is our club that has taken the hard steps to fight to make sure we got a result, the result

The world which was free and easy has been divided by restrictions and radius boundaries. However, being a travel blogger, and a proud Melburnian living in a western suburb, I am giving myself an opportunity to be a tourist in my own city. I decided to support small city apartments by having few staycations. It is a great way to boost local tourism and support small businesses that are striving hard to hit back post pandemic. Do you remember the last time you had a staycation in Melbourne city? In the past five years of calling myself a true Melburnian, I’ve never actually had a staycation. A beautiful apartment on Collins Street, Docklands, famous for its shopping and café vibes, was my weekend destination with friends. Waking up to some amazing city views and not having to rush to catch the V/Line or drive home, I had my fair bit of extravagance with family. These city apartments are self-contained and offer a perfect venue for family with kids too. Wake up to the smell of coffee and cook up your favourite breakfast while enjoying the city views. You can spend the day jumping in the pool or read your favourite book while you watch the city coming back to life. I enjoyed my lasagne and coffee with some afternoon retail therapy, caught up with some old friends over a glass of wine and did some pub-hopping in Flinders Lane. But it doesn’t have to be a city getaway. No matter where you stay – Sunshine, Broadmeadows, Sunbury, Footscray, Altona, Whittlesea or anywhere in regional Victoria – gift yourself some time to explore the state this summer and help small businesses to survive and bounce back. ANIMAL CUPCAKES Ingredients 125g butter, softened 3/4 cup caster sugar 2 large eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 1/2 cups self-raising flour 1/2 cup plain flour 3/4 cup milk

Icing and decorating: 200g butter, room temperature 1 1/4 cups icing sugar 1 tsp vanilla essence marshmallows, smarties, liquorice straps, chocolate chips, pretzels, sprinkles and any other treats you want to use as decorations

Method 1. Pre-heat oven to 170°C fan-forced. Line 12 muffin pans with paper cases. 2. To make cupcakes: Place butter and sugar into a bowl and beat with electric mixer until pale and creamy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well between each addition. Mix in vanilla. 3. Fold in flours and milk alternately until combined and mixture is smooth. Spoon mixture between patty cases and bake for 20-22 mins until golden. Let cupcakes cool completely. 4. To make icing: Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat ingredients together for 4 minutes or until light and fluffy. Put some icing in different bowls and add a few drops of food colouring to each to create different colours. 5. Decorate using lollies and biscuits to create animal faces - chicks, pigs, cats, bears, spiders and lions are all fun to make!

Method 1. Cut coloured paper to the right size to fit around a toilet roll and glue to the rolls. 2. Glue the rolls together so they’re standing side by side. 3. Draw the head, tail and feet of your chosen animal on paper or cardboard and cut out. 4. Finish your animal head with whiskers, ears, eyes, colour and creative sparkle (you can either draw these or glue on craft items). 5. Glue the head on top of the first roll, the legs onto the middle rolls, and the tail onto the end roll. 6. Glue the bottom of the rolls to a strip of paper or cardboard to make a base stand. Heading in the right direction

By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring Jeep Compass has been on sale on-and-off in Australia since 2007 when the iconic American company finally realised that 4WD lookalikes, then being called SUVs, were becoming increasing popular and often being bought in place of conventional passenger cars. Shortly after its launch, Compass was joined by a second compact Jeep SUV called Patriot. Its more rugged looks proved more appealing than the softer Compass which quietly slipped from the Australian import list at the end of 2009. Compass returned in 2012 and now has the compact Jeep SUV field to itself following the withdrawal of Patriot in late 2017 when the current, third-generation version was launched. The latest update, in January 2020, saw a couple of name changes with the previous entry-level Sport now called Night Eagle and the higher-spec Longitude now S-Limited. The four-model range is completed with the Limited and Trailhawk variants.

Engines / tranmissions Night Eagle, Limited and S-Limited are powered by 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol with outputs of 129 kW and 229 Nm. Trailhawk uses a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel with slightly less power (125 kW) but significantly more (350 Nm) of torque. Night Eagle is front-wheel drive with a six-speed automatic transmission while the other three variants are driven by all four wheels with nine-speed auto. Jeep, in line with its more serious off-road credential, tags the Trailhawk as a 4x4 rather than AWD. Off-road credentials with Trailhawk include raised ride height and steeper approach, ramp-over and departure angles. Traction in Trailhawk is through the Jeep Active Drive Low 4WD system, with Rock mode added to its Selec-Terrain control.

Styling With so many of its competitors going for sweeping lines and angles it is refreshing to see that, in true Jeep fashion, Compass sticks closer to the utility part of the SUV name. A non-negotiable feature of all Jeep designs is the seven-slot grille. The much smaller version in Compass works really well with the wide 26 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 24 February, 2021

stance of this latest version. In profile, Compass styling looks very much like a smaller version of its larger Cherokee and Grand Cherokee siblings. The Night Eagle which we tested comes standard with an attractive black painted roof and black 18-inch alloy wheels as well as an optional ($1950) dual-pane panoramic sunroof.

Interior There’s a feeling of quality inside the Compass that wasn’t always there. The cabin feels airy and light too which is often difficult to accomplish in a SUV of this size. Front headroom is good despite the optional sunroof in our test car and there’s space in the back to seat a couple of relatively tall adults. There are air vents and USB ports in the rear. Storage space is pretty good. There’s no flat area between the front seats although there is a convenient phone-size alcove at the bottom of the dashboard. There’s also a useful storage box under the front passenger seat which can be accessed by tumbling the base of the seat forward. Perfect for keeping prying outside eyes away from secure items. The 438-litre is one of the biggest in the class and is well shaped with space for a couple of decent-sized suitcases.

Additional features across the range now include autonomous emergency warning and braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic detection, reversing camera, tyre pressure monitoring, trailer sway control, rear parking sensors, hill hold control and two Isofix child seat mountings. The Limited and S-Limited variants add all-wheel drive, front and rear parking sensors, parallel and perpendicular park assist, automatic high beam, adaptive cruise control and disconnecting rear axle. The off-road focused Trailhawk uses an enhanced 4x4 system, off-road suspension, hill descent control, tow hooks and underbody skid plates. It also gets a full-size spare wheel; the other variants have space savers.

Infotainment All models use the Jeep Uconnect system displayed on an 8.4-inch touchscreen monitor with satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard in all models. Apart from the usual phone and audio features Bluetooth provides integrated voice control commands. Compass Night Eagle gets a six-speaker audio system, the higher spec models step up to a premium BeatsAudio nine-speaker package that includes a subwoofer.

Safety Jeep Compass gets the now-expected five-start ANCAP rating starting with seven airbags, including one for the driver’s knees, enhanced ABS brakes and stability program.

Driving Getting into and out of Compass isn’t difficult and, unlike some of its small SUV rivals in this small SUV market the front seats are large,

comfortable and with low but supportive bolsters. They proved ideal for a couple of relaxing longish trips that we made. Although there is keyless entry, start-up is through the rare nowadays key-in-ignition method, something that we actually still prefer. There’s excellent visibility in all directions, helped rearwards by a lower headrest in the centre seat. Although nothing exciting, the 2.4-litre petrol engine is more than adequate around town and for motorway cruising. Out on the rural terrain it needed plenty of revs to climb steepish hills and any fast overtaking needed a fair but of preparation. There’s a nice balance between handling and ride comfort and it settled quickly after hitting the occasional pothole. Steering is predictable and responsive. Factory-tested fuel consumption is listed at 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres. We averaged 9.4 L/100 km during our test.

Summing up Jeep Compass is a small SUV with big promise. More than just a far cry from the vehicle it is replacing, its all-round performance and much improved interior makes for a classy act. In an important step forward for those potential buyers concerned about Jeep reliability the company now provides a five-year standard warranty although, disappointingly, the warranty distance remains at 100,000 km warranty.

SPORT Young stars make grade By Michaela Meade Four junior players from the Broadmeadows Basketball Association have been selected for Basketball Victoria’s State Development Program. The program is the first step for players who want to represent Victoria or join an Australian junior representative team. The program will be run at Broadmeadows for athletes from Melbourne’s north-west. Broadmeadows Basketball Association’s Anastasia Gak, Sarah Portlock, Scarlett Robinson and Zachary Thomas said they were Anastasia, Sarah, Scarlett and Zachary. Jets sign key duo The Sunbury Jets have announced the return of two of their biggest stars for the upcoming Big V women’s championship season. The Jets last week announced that Orla O’Reilly and Jacinta Beckley would take to the court this season. O’Reilly has been a star for the Jets, and the competition, in her three seasons at the club, having been named an all-star each year. She was also the league grand final most valuable player in 2018. O’Reilly said she was excited to get back on the court following a year off after the birth of her first child. “I am thrilled to be back with Sunbury for another season,” she said. “After a year away from basketball, it’s so great to be back on the court with the girls. “I’m excited to get started and am looking forward to be competing for another championship.” Coach John White said O’Reilly brings an unparalleled level of creativity and excitement to the team. “Orla’s ability to score when needed, her craftiness on and off the ball, and her ability to facilitate and bring others into the game are impressive but what stands out, even more, is that she is a professional and she lives it. “Her leadership and approach to the game will only help our group grow.” Beckley is another key piece of the puzzle for the Jets. She was part of the team in 2019 and was due to suit up for the 2020 season before it was cancelled. Beckley returned to New Zealand during lockdown and said she was excited to get back to Sunbury after so long away. White said he was ecstatic when he heard that Beckley was keen to return. “Having Jacinta back at the Jets will bring more IQ and stability to our frontcourt, on top of that, she’s been working hard back home and is in amazing shape so I can’t wait to see what the next level of her game look likes.” The Jets kick off their season at home on March 4 against Chelsea. Anastasia said she was surprised when she found out she had been selected for the program. “I had to read the letter a couple of times for it to sink in.” Zachary said he set himself the goal of being selected for the program after the COVID-19 pandemic stopped the 2020 program. “I worked really hard to keep myself fit and to keep my skills up,” Zachary said. “Getting into the program is an incredible opportunity … I get to work with some of the best basketball coaches in Victoria. “Basketball and education go together for me, so it would be great if basketball could help to open up the possibility of studying at a college in the USA.” Scarlett also hopes the program could lead to playing overseas. “I hope to one day play college basketball in America and then see where it takes me from there,” she said.

Bourke returns to Melton New Melton Thoroughbreds men’s coach Lucas Bourke asked many people for help in his previous stint as president at the club. So when the club asked him to step up and take on the role as the men’s Big V coach weeks out from the upcoming season, he was happy to oblige. Bourke’s appointment follows playing coach Chris Johnson signing a deal to play in the Western Australian NBL1 season. “It’s a different place these days,” Bourke said. “I was already back at the club this year coaching my son. It was nice to be in the position to help out. “I then took on the men’s coaching role this season, as I saw that was what the club needed. “When I was president I asked people to step up and when people asked me to, I felt I had to.” Bourke coached at Ballarat and Keilor in his four years away from the club and has coached junior teams for more than 20 years. He has coached both Vic Metro and Vic Country teams to junior state titles. He said while coaching senior teams hadn’t been his ambition, he was excited to take on the role. Bourke has a challenge ahead of him – round one gets under way on March 13. He is still putting a squad together, reaching out to some new and old faces to try and complete the group. Bourke said the loss of Johnson was massive, as there was no one in the squad who could step up in that position. “We’re looking to bring in some new talent,” he said. “We’re looking to make some small improvements to the roster before the season starts. “There’s some old faces, some smart guys, so hopefully that will count for a bit.” Former division 2 competition most valuable player Jeff Crowe returns to the club. Crowe, a championship player with the club, has more recently played with Keilor Thunder. Sam Byron is another key player in the squad. After an interrupted pre-season, Bourke said the biggest focus now was building for the future. “The expectations for this year are about building the program back up and creating a strong foundation. “That’s the number one goal. “If we’re in a position to push for finals, then we’ll look to push for them.” The Thoroughbreds kick off their season at home against Wangaratta North East [formally NE Bushrangers] on March 13.
