Lockdown waiting game By Alesha Capone and Goya Dmytryshchak Victoria is “well-placed” to end its snap five-day lockdown today, Premier Daniel Andrews announced yesterday. The lockdown started on Saturday as a “short, sharp circuit breaker” against a “hyper-infectious” outbreak of the UK strain, linked to cases from the Holiday Inn near Melbourne Airport. Two new cases of COVID-19 were recorded yesterday, with the state government announcing it was exploring alternatives to hotel quarantine such as purpose-built

accommodation at Melbourne and Avalon airports. Three Wyndham venues were listed as coronavirus exposure locations after the lockdown was announced. The partner of a food and beverage worker from the Holiday Inn, who tested positive on February 10, had several close contacts at Coates Hire Werribee and the Royal Australian Air Force base at Point Cook as a result of his work. Anyone who visited Coates Hire Werribee, on Old Geelong Road in Hoppers Crossing, on Monday, February 8 between 6.45-7.30am must immediately isolate, get a coronavirus test, and

remain isolated for 14 days. A man in his thirties, from Point Cook, also tested positive last Friday. The man attended a private function in Coburg, which has links to several confirmed cases. The Coffeeologist Cafe on Point Cook Road was listed as a tier two exposure site. Anyone who visited the cafe on Monday, February 8 between 11-11.40am and on Wednesday, February 10 between 11.30am-12.10pm is asked to get tested and isolate until they receive a negative result. On its Facebook page, the Coffeeologist Café posted that the risk was “really low as the person

who tested positive was in for a takeaway coffee both times and waited outside, but we still have to take this seriously”. “We will be closed to undergo a deep clean as per DHHS regulations and we will reopen once all the team has been tested and get the all clear.” The cafe has since stated that all staff had returned negative tests for the virus. The Caltex Woolworths on Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing was named as a tier three exposure site between 6.40-7.15am on Monday, February 8. ■ COVID

Police muscle in on gym thefts By Alesha Capone Eleven people have been arrested in relation to a spate of car thefts from outside gyms in the Wyndham Vale, Point Cook and Tarneit areas since January. A police spokesman said investigations are ongoing and declined to comment further. A police video was uploaded to the Wyndham Eyewatch Facebook page last week in a bid to raise public awareness about thefts from gyms across the state.

In the video, Inspector Jason Forster from the Victoria Police Westgate Division – which covers Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnon – said the crimes are “being committed by specifically young people”. “They’re coming into the gyms, following patrons or members in the gym, saying: ‘Look, I’ve forgotten my card, can you let me in?’” Inspector Forster said. “Once they’re inside the gym, they’re rifling through people’s belongings and taking things such as wallets, credit cards, clothing, car keys

in particular and then going outside trying to locate their vehicle and taking the vehicle. “And that’s leading onto further crime, in some instances, being used in other crimes in and around the streets such as robberies.” Police have advised community members to exercise caution and secure their valuables when attending gyms and leisure centres. They’re being advised not to leave bags unattended or to use locker storage while exercising.

Police have also advised gym patrons not to allow anyone else to use their gym access pass. In February last year, police in the west warned gym goers that groups of young thieves were stealing car keys from unattended bags to then steal vehicles from gym carparks. Within the last week of February 2020, five cars were stolen from outside gyms in Werribee, Tarneit and Point Cook. Little kid with a big heart Writing a book at the age of eight is an impressive feat. Deciding to donate profits from the sales of the book to a good cause is even more remarkable. But Point Cook author Tommy Shen says that a simple desire to help other youngsters sparked his generous act. Tommy said he decided to donate profits from his book to the Lighthouse Foundation, after hearing about its good work from his mother’s friend Beverley. The charity, which was founded by former Melburnian of the Year Susan Barton, provides housing, care and counselling for young people at risk of homelessness. “Beverley, who does a lot of charity work, said that the Lighthouse Foundation looks after young children so I was very happy about this as it is all about kids helping kids,” Tommy said. “The pandemic has made people lose their jobs and now there are many unfortunate families whom I would like to help. “I want rich people to help the poor people, so when I grow up I will become an illustrator and earn lots of money to help lots of poor people.” Tommy’s children’s book, Book About Dragons, has been published by Greenhill Publishers. It is about 88 types of dragons and the relationships between them all. The book includes English and Mandarin text and illustrations provided by a Mexican illustrator. With a Chinese mother and an Indonesian father, Tommy said that he developed a love of dragons from a young age. “I was born in the Year of the Dragon and I think sometimes that this is why I love dragons so much,” he said. Helping others is also something which runs in Tommy’s family. His great-great grandfather founded an orphanage in Hong Kong in the 19th-20th century. Truganina home to national hub A European online retailer is set to build an 80,960 square metre national distribution hub in Truganina. Netherlands-based VidaXL, which sells outdoor furniture, garden products and homewares, has struck a deal with Frasers Property Industrial aThe Financial Review reported last month. The distribution hub will be built on an 11.4 hectare site within Frasers’ Canvas West business estate on Boundary Road. Construction of the hub, which will include a 68,600 square metre warehouse, is due to be completed in April next year. Frasers Property Industrial general manager Anthony Maugeri said the deal with VidaXL was completed via the internet, due to international COVID-19 travel restrictions. “The new national distribution centre is designed to help VidaXL accommodate its rapid online business growth and customer demand, which is in line with the rise of e-commerce and a structural shift towards online retailing,” Mr Maugeri said. According to the Realestatesource. com.au website, VisaXL is already renting a 30,885 square metre warehouse in Maker Place, Truganina. That lease is set to expire next year. VidaXL has six offices across the world, 1550 employees and collaborates with 1000 factories on a global scale. The company began in 2006, when Dutch entrepreneurs Gerjan den Hartog and Wouter Bakker started selling products on e-Bay. They started developing their own branded products and selling them in Europe, and now also sell online in Australia and the United States.

A portable sculpture is helping raise awareness of the impact of litter on the environment in Wyndham. The sculpture comprises one-metre high 3D letters created out of chicken wire, which spell out ‘Our Home’. It’s part of Melbourne Water’s Litter Action campaign. Melbourne Water’s Waterwatch co-ordinator Dr Teresa Mackintosh said Wyndham residents chose the words in response to a social media campaign about the project. “The community told us they felt ‘Our Home’ best defined what this campaign and sculpture is trying to achieve,” Dr Mackintosh said. “That is – to increase litter awareness and action amongst the Wyndham community – and in doing so, protect and care for the local

Wyndham council has approved a planning permit application for a 40-metre high telecommunications monopole to be installed at the Wyndham Vale South Reserve on McGraths Road, Werribee. The purpose of the proposed telecommunications facility is to provide for the installation of the 5G network.

Pedalling a cause By Alesha Capone Point Cook’s Tausif Sawdagar will this week join a cycling event in honour of his mother-in-law Shaista Anjum, who has been battling cancer for years. Tausif will ride 100 kilometres in the Ballarat Cycle Classic on Sunday, to raise funds for the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute. All registration fees from the classic will be donated to the institute – a cancer research centre based in Ballarat. Tausif set a fundraising goal of $700, but has so far reached more than $4100 in donations, which he described as “just incredible”. Shaista was diagnosed with a stage-four Neuroendocrine tumour in 2017, which was found to have seeded into multiple sites including her liver and skin. Since then, she has undergone abdominal surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and biological therapies. Shaista is now undergoing novel monoclonal antibody treatment. Tausif said that in 2018, doctors told Shaista she possibly had one to two years to live. “But she has been doing a lot better than doctors thought, I think it’s partially because she’s got a very positive mindset and tried to keep doing the things she enjoys,” he said. Tausif said Shaista, whose husband lived and worked overseas, had single-handedly raised Nazia and his two sisters-in-law. “She took on three jobs at once, gave up her studies and her free-time and despite it being difficult, never asked for anything back,” he said. “She would give everything for others and never considered her own needs.” Tausif said he had always been passionate about fitness, but did not take cycling

COVID tests add up A community health provider in the west has conducted more than 65,000 COVID-19 tests since last May. IPC Health, which has a super clinic in Wyndham Vale, operates COVID testing sites at its Deer Park and Wyndham Vale hubs, plus in Tarneit and Sunshine West. IPC chief executive Jayne Nelson said that at the beginning of the pandemic, IPC Health worked with Western Health to send teams to workplaces affected by the virus, such as meat processors and schools. More recently, staff have been testing airline crews at Melbourne Airport, international arrivals attending the Australian Open and workers in quarantine hotels. She said staff from IPC Health worked seven-days-a-week, along with staff from five other community health organisations, as part of a COVID-19 Rapid Response Team. “We are responding to calls from the government as soon as there is an outbreak,” she said. Since August, the Rapid Response Team has tested more than 36,000 people. Ms Nelson said staff have “safety protocols down pat” and that no employees have contracted the virus. “We also have smaller teams offering a mobilised service, made up of one or two people – such as a clinician and an administrative officer – who work with people like those in the culturally and linguistically diverse community and asylum seekers,” Ms Nelson said. Ms Nelson said she hoped community health providers would be involved in the roll out of the COVID-19 vaccination next month. “Community health is very well-placed, we’ve got resources readily available and speak languages of people in the community,” she said.

Police complex build on track The new Wyndham Police Complex is set to start operations in the middle of the year. The original completion date of December last year was rescheduled due to nearby civil infrastructure works and coronavirus restrictions, which regulated the number of construction workers allowed on-site for significant periods of 2020. Once completed, the $45 million complex – which is being constructed on the Princes Highway, behind the old police station – will house more than 460 staff and officers. A Victoria Police spokesperson said the new complex would be home to both general duties and specialist units, including the area’s command, uniform branch, Crime Investigation Unit, Divisional Response Unit, Proactive Policing Unit, Youth Tasking, Transit Protective Safety Unit and support staff. The new Wyndham Police Complex will be one of the largest Victoria Police facilities outside the Melbourne CBD, encompassing four storeys. The facility will also feature dedicated crime investigation spaces, larger training and conference areas, improved forensic examination capabilities, technology-enhanced emergency management response, fitness areas and workplace support spaces. Police briefs Three stabbed Three people were taken to hospital after being stabbed during an altercation in Lennon Boulevard, Point Cook about 11.45pm on Saturday. A man in his twenties was stabbed in his leg and two teenage boys stabbed in their arms. All three were taken to hospital for treatment.

Quarantine plan could fly By Alesha Capone Avalon Airport may be used as a quarantine facility for returned overseas travellers. Premier Daniel Andrews on Monday said that while no decision has been made, “some sites with very large amounts of space and an international airport located just next door” have “some real strength” as potential quarantine facilities. Radio station 3AW reported that Linfox Airports Group, which owns Avalon, has suggested the quarantine idea to state government. Linfox Airports Group chairman David Fox

said the airport could be transformed into a facility to house up to 300 people within eight weeks. The Age is reporting that Avalon Airport boss Justin Giddings is waiting to hear back from the state government, after submitting a proposal for a quarantine facility to be rapidly constructed on the grounds of the airport. Mr Giddings said the first rollout of 50 cabins could be constructed within a month if the plan gets the green light. “The whole idea would be to fly people in from overseas and see them effectively walk to a quarantine area for 14 days, reducing the need for buses,” he said.

“It would also allow for easy access to Melbourne and Geelong if people needed medical attention.” However, Wyndham Cr Mia Shaw has expressed concern about the idea. On her Facebook page, Cr Shaw wrote: “We need to rule out Werribee Mercy Hospital taking COVID patients from the proposed Avalon facility due to the risk to our community – one of the largest and fastest growing in Victoria. “My other concern is, what would the Avalon facility become if it didn’t need to be a quarantine facility anymore? Lots of questions. Let’s hope we get some detail in due course seeing this could be up and running in 30 days.”

Assault charges A 47 year-old Altona Meadows woman has been charged with the stabbing of a Williamstown man on February 4. The woman was arrested in Rockbank about 11.45am on Wednesday. The woman has been charged with aggravated burglary, intentionally causing serious injury and other assault-related offences. No plans for more live-streams By Alesha Capone A Wyndham resident has called on the council to live stream its planning committee meetings in addition to the monthly ordinary meetings. The council held a planning committee meeting last Tuesday night, which was open to the public but was not broadcast on social media. Resident Lisa Heinrichs said she “was not happy” that the council’s planning meeting was not live streamed or broadcast online.

“They need to be able to live-stream it to the broader community, especially considering we’re still under COVID-19 regulations,” she said. “It’s excluding a lot of people in the community if they don’t live-stream it.” Ms Heinrichs said this included single parents who wanted to watch the council meeting but had no one to look after their children, people without cars to travel to the council offices in Werribee, and people with a disability.

this month, the council implemented its Community Engagement Policy, in which it committed to be more transparent and engage more with residents. She said this should include streaming planning meetings. A Wyndham council spokesperson said the ordinary council meetings would continue to be live streamed, but there were “no plans to live-stream the planning committee meetings”. The spokesperson said the planning meetings would remain open to the public, subject to COVID-19 restrictions.

Life’s road trip recorded Werribee South artist Xiang Li’s first solo exhibition features works inspired by a 5000-kilometre road trip from Melbourne to Uluru last year. Li, who suffers from depression and anxiety, started painting in 2018. She said she used art as emotional therapy and a tool to express how she interprets the world. Her exhibition is titled Red Dust, after the dirt that her car collected during her 12-day drive to Uluru and back. Li said she brought a 2003 Honda, which she dubbed Wall-E – after the Pixar film character – especially for the journey. “He was a shopping car … now he is an adventure car,” she said. Li said her trip was filled with adventures – from the time she accidentally locked herself out of the car during a sandstorm to staying at a vineyard which had recently burned down, where the owner had started adopting

street cats. She said she especially enjoyed visiting Coober Pedy in South Australia, which inspired much of her artwork. “Coober Pedy feels like a different country in the desert,” she said. “People are living underground, it’s like something out of a fairytale.” Li said that she “almost gave up” on her trip after falling sick, but she decided to keep going because seeing Uluru was one of her long-held goals. “Life is just like a road trip, and it is never about the destination,” she said. “It is about the people we met and the experience we had”. Li, who works in the disability sector, wants to use art to help other people with mental illnesses and who have experienced trauma. Building connections The non-profit Bridge Builders for Australasia (BBFA) is creating community connections while helping out people at home and overseas. BBFA president Melba Cabato Waugh said the group began when several ladies banded together to help the poor and the sick in the Philippines. Ms Waugh said the original group of founders, including Edith Robertson, Lourdes Douglas, Glenda del Pilar, Helen Acuna and Elvira Murdoch, were later joined by more women. “Currently, we have about 75 members, most of them are Wyndham residents,” Ms Waugh said. “We want to … be able to give back to the community where we live now and to be able to share our blessings to our motherland.”

In addition to running the FILOZ Idol Singing Contest for several years, BBFA has supported numerous causes including recreational activities for Melbourne senior citizens. Overseas, they contribute to annual Christmas food and gift-giving programs, sponsor students, help build schools and assist people who are elderly, sick or have a disability. Milestone for school This year marks a special milestone for Tarneit’s Thomas Carr College, with the school celebrating 25 years of teaching Wyndham students. The school was established in 1997 and was named after the second Archbishop of Melbourne, Thomas Carr. First classes were held on January 30, 1997 with 72 students and nine staff members. The college’s founding principal, Paul D’Astoli, guided the school through its first decade. “I’m very proud to have been the foundational principal and to have played a role in developing a thriving educational institution serving the people of the west,” Mr D’Astoli said. This year, the school welcomed just over 1100 students. Present principal, Craig Holmes said the school was located in an area with an ever-expanding population “that requires the excellent educational opportunities that Thomas Carr College provides, while meeting the diverse needs of our community”. “As we grow in maturity as an established school, we look forward to building on our great facilities and educational programs,” he said. Thomas Carr College also has a number of long-term employees, some of whom have been at the school for more than 20 years. The college has planned several events to mark the milestone, including alumni social events, Thomas Carr Day and an Alumni Family Trivia Night with fundraising activities. End of an era By Goya Dmytryshchak It is the end of an era as ExxonMobil announced it would close its Altona refinery after 72 years to become an import terminal, leaving the future of another Altona petrochemical behemoth “in the firing line”. Australia’s largest petrochemical company, Qenos, operates three plants at Altona and is connected to Mobil by pipeline. ExxonMobil last week told its 300 workers the refinery was “no longer considered economically viable” and would be converted into an import terminal to “ensure ongoing, reliable fuel supply for Victoria”. The closure follows BP Australia’s decision to make its Kwinana site in Western Australia an import terminal in 2022. Ampol’s site at Lytton in Queensland is under review, with a decision expected to be announced in June. This means Geelong’s Viva Energy could become Australia’s last refinery, with its chief executive Scott Wyatt saying “a lot that needs to be finalised”. ExxonMobil Australia chairman Nathan Fay said the decision to close was made following an extensive review of operations at Australia’s smallest refinery, which commenced operation in 1949. “The refinery will remain in operation for some time to ensure we will continue to meet Victoria’s fuel needs while the conversion is completed,” he said. “It’s expected that it could be six months before we cease production at the refinery. “At this early stage, we are still planning what these changes to our site may mean for our neighbours and the local community into the future. ExxonMobil will work closely with regulators and other key community and

government stakeholders on future site plans. “While an import terminal will have a smaller workforce than the Altona refinery, we are already planning the ways we can help support those people immediately impacted, including potential redeployment across our other operations, or through redundancy, outplacement and retraining.” Mobil’s Altona operations had been affected by COVID-19 border closures, flight cancellations and stay-at-home orders. Demand for jet fuel has dropped by up to 90 per cent. The Altona refinery produces about half of Victoria’s refined fuel needs.

ExxonMobil said it would remain a critical supplier of energy to Australia, including through its operation of the Gippsland Basin joint venture which supplies 40 per cent of eastern Australia’s energy needs. Qenos chief executive Stephen Bell said it was “still very early days in terms of what the decision means more broadly”. “Qenos’ Altona Olefins plant processes ethane gas from Bass Strait as its primary feedstock, but also processes LPG feedstock from ExxonMobil’s Altona refinery,” he said. “We plan to work closely with ExxonMobil and government to understand the

implications of this announcement and ensure continued access to feedstock and exchange of co-products.“ United Workers Union national secretary Tim Kennedy said there were concerns about the “multiplier effect”. “The first port of call when ExxonMobil pulls out is Qenos, because Qenos is also a fundamental cog to support advanced manufacturing and general manufacturing in the state, and it relies on product from Mobil to do its work – they’re basically connected by a big pipe. “We would see that as a fundamental risk and what we call the multiplier effect of when you lose key advanced manufacturing infrastructure – there’s a multiplier effect to the ecosystem around manufacturing and jobs and services in the state.” Federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor said Mobil’s Altona refinery closure would not negatively impact Australian fuel stockholdings. “The government is providing support to the sector through the JobKeeper program to maintain operations and support jobs,” he said. Opposition leader Anthony Albanese said the closure “would cost hundreds of direct jobs and impact thousands of workers in downstream industry”. Altona MP Jill Hennessy and Williamstown MP Melissa Horne issued a joint statement describing the closure as “devastating”. “The west has a rich industrial past, and the refinery has played a key role in that, operating for decades and employing generations of workers,” they said. “This is a highly skilled workforce and our priority is assisting them wherever possible to find other employment in advanced manufacturing and other areas suitable to their tailored skill sets.“

Housing proposals rejected By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has refused two housing proposals in residential areas of Point Cook and Tarneit. One of the proposals was seeking permission to build seven-double storey houses across two lots at 1 and 3 Nagle Drive in Point Cook. The other sought to build two double-storey dwellings at 5 Honeyeater Court, Tarneit. More than 125 people signed a Change.org petition against the Point Cook development. The council also received 16 objections to the planning permit, although the application was

exempt from public consultation. Residents raised concerns about over-development, traffic congestion and road safety. Resident Irfan Ahamed, who spoke at the meeting, said the seven dwellings could have “a significant impact” on the neighbourhood. Mr Ahamed said residents were worried that additional traffic generated by the development could cause a “safety hazard” in Nagle Drive. “This particular road, being a narrow arterial road with a major children’s play area nearby, will result in increasing traffic hazard risks and more congestion, and also negatively impact the neighborhood character,” he said.

Some Wyndham councillors voted in favour of the proposal, citing concerns that the developer would likely appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and win. However, a majority of councillors voted against the proposal. Cr Susan McIntyre said she believed the development would have an “unacceptable

impact” upon the amenity of the area. Cr Jasmine Hill agreed with residents who said the development could pose a potential safety risk in terms of traffic. “In my opinion, as long as there still is a chance, we should still fight for residents,” she said. The council received 21 objections to the Tarneit proposal including concerns about the development’s possible impacts on neighbourhood character, overlooking, traffic, public health and amenity issues. The council unanimously voted to reject the proposal.

Coaches kicking goals Residents with aspirations of becoming a soccer coach are invited to attend coaching courses in Hoppers Crossing. Football Victoria will run two community coaching courses at the Grange Reserve, to help Wyndham sports enthusiasts gain the skills and qualifications to become a coach. Anyone interested in teaching under-9s how to play soccer and the fundamental skills of the game can sign up to take the free three-hour MiniRoos coaching course on Saturday, February 27. For those wanting to increase their knowledge of soccer and learn how to coach older players, the two-day Skill Training Certificate course will be held on Saturday, March 13 and Sunday, March 21. Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said no prior experience was necessary to participate in either course.

“These courses are a great way for Wyndham residents to learn the basics of coaching, close to home,” Cr Hegedich said. Petition to save Laverton pool By Goya Dmytryshchak A petition signed by 1123 people has called on Hobsons Bay council to reconsider its 2019 decision to close the Laverton Swim and Fitness Centre. The $64 million Hobsons Bay Aquatic Strategy 2019-2030, endorsed by the previous council in July, includes building a $40 million pool in Altona Meadows and replacing the Laverton pool with a $3 million water play and youth facility. The petition states that the council endorsed closing the Laverton pool “without proper consultation with the residents of Laverton”.

“The funds that were required to build this centre were raised by our parents and our grandparents who lived in Laverton in the 1960s and 1970s,” the petition states. “The money was raised through the dedication of the families in Laverton collecting money from everyone in their streets for years. “This is why the residents of Laverton feel so strongly about our family pool – it was never the councils to get rid of in the first place and should only be improved and grown in line with the town it lives in”. Newly-elected councillor Matt Tyler, who tabled the petition at last week’s council meeting, said the aquatic strategy had not

received much community input. “The reality is that only 75 people across the municipality provided input in response to the draft aquatic strategy and the decision to close the pool was one line in an over 30-page document,” he said. “I think it’s also important to say, we shouldn’t be pitting one part of the municipality against another part of the municipality.”

Cr Diana Grima, also serving her first term, told the meeting that her family had been among residents who helped establish the pool. “There’s people from the community who raised funds to get this swimming pool for their great community and my father and grandmother were [among] them,” she said. “I was priviliged to use that as a swimming facility, a gym, and at one stage we even had Blue Heelers – a television show – utilise that swimming pool. “Unfortunately, residents have come to me and and my colleague, Cr Tyler, saying they had no awareness of this, it could be a possibility that it’s closing down.'

Liz Reyes says the inspiration for her handmade earrings comes from sources as varied as nature, organic textures and the ’80s. Reyes, who works as a retail designer and project manager, recently launched an online business – Evergreen Collective Melbourne – selling earrings and face masks which she designs. Altona North train station call By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council is lobbying the state government for new train stations to service the areas of Altona North, Newport west and Brooklyn. Altona North’s population is set to boom with the development of the former Don Smallgoods site, known as Precinct 15. The precinct, which is half the size of Melbourne’s CBD, is being developed in to 3000 dwellings for about 7000 people. Deputy mayor Daria Kellander moved a

motion at last week’s council meeting that the council campaign for a new passenger train link on the existing freight train line from Sunshine to Newport, with a new train station to be built in the vicinity of Altona North/ Brooklyn. “Residents in Brooklyn at the moment need to drive further out to stations such as Tottenham, West Footscray, Yarraville, Spotswood or Newport in order to access any type of train commuter network,” she said. A station in this vicinity could also serve future residents of the Bradmill site on the

northern side of the West Gate Freeway at Yarraville. Cr Tony Briffa said the former Paisley station, near the Millers Junction shopping centre at Altona North, could also be reinstated. The station closed in 1985.

Cr Briffa moved a motion that the council work with the Altona, Seaholme, Altona North, Brooklyn and Newport west communities on a public campaign to advocate for the reinstatement of a train station in Altona North or Newport west on the Werribee line. ““It would serve the Altona North Millers Junction very well if it was in the Altona North area, particularly if it was near where Paisley station was,” she said. “The train line already goes there – the Werribee line – so this is not a big infrastructure spend/build by the state government.”

Hidden gems revealed Photographer Imran Abul Kashem loves sharing his knowledge with other people. The Hoppers Crossing resident is set to host a series of photo tours exploring Wyndham’s hidden gems and historic locations. The free tours have been funded and organised by Wyndham council, as part of efforts to activate the municipality after last year’s COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. Kashem said that if the latest lockdown continues, he hopes to reschedule the tours for April. “Photo tours are a meaningful way to connect with similar-minded people and also to know the history and beautiful places around where we live,” he said. The first tour, which will take place this Saturday from 9am-1pm, will visit Wyndham Park, Bungie’s Hole, Doolan Street and Werribee River Park. Special guest, Werribee Riverkeeper John

Forrester will join the tour to talk about the heritage and natural conditions of the area. In past decades, Bungie’s Hole was a popular spot where swimming carnivals were held for Werribee residents. “I know it’s a hidden gem in Werribee,” Kashem said. On Saturday, March 20, from 5-6.30pm, he will host a photo tour at Baden Powell Reserve. On March 27, from 10am-2pm, he will host a tour in Little River. “Little River is a place that’s still got a country vibe, the beautiful You Yangs and it’s not far from where we live,” Kashem said. The tours are open to residents aged 16 years and older. All camera types are welcome and no prior photographic experience is required. By Alesha Capone Demand for birthing suites at Werribee Mercy Hospital has reached capacity. The hospital welcomed 3833 babies in 2020, slightly lower than the 3888 babies delivered there in 2019. Health services chief executive Jason Payne said Werribee Mercy Hospital’s birthing numbers had remained steady over the past two years because the birthing suites were unable to accommodate any more expectant mums. He said some pregnant women within the Werribee Mercy Hospital catchment are

being forced to use services at public hospitals outside the area. “The demand exists for Werribee Mercy Hospital to deliver more babies locally but this cannot occur without expanded facilities,” Mr Payne said. “It would be preferable that local families had access to more of the best high quality and safe public birthing services at Werribee Mercy Hospital, so they don’t have to travel.” Mr Payne said planning was under way to boost the capacity of the birthing suites. “A third stage of Werribee Mercy Hospital, which is currently in the final stages of planning, will involve the creation of more

birthing suites, additional post-natal beds, and other ante and post-natal facilities, accompanied by additional midwifery and nursing staff. “Based on demand for existing maternity services, it is projected that Werribee Mercy Hospital would be well placed to meet an anticipated increase in demand of up to 30 per cent more babies in the western metro area.” Mr Payne said Mercy Health has been working with the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority and the Department of Health and Human Services since 2016 to prepare for the future needs of Werribee Mercy.

In November’s state budget, $4.8 million was allocated to finalise planning for the third stage of the hospital’s development. “We have acknowledged publicly the funding was a clear sign the voices of the people of the west of Melbourne are being heard and government is committed to meeting a major upgrade,” Mr Payne said. Mercy Health Group chief executive, Adjunct Professor Stephen Cornelissen, said the next stage of Werribee Mercy Hospital’s construction required $300 million in funding “to ensure the people of Wyndham receive the level and quality of health services they deserve and need”.

MY WYNDHAM Point Cook’s James and Kate Widlake became Australian citizens last month. They chat with Alesha Capone. Can you tell me a bit about yourselves?

What do you like about Point Cook?

James: I’m 32, nearly 33. I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and moved to Australia in March 2015. I studied accounting at university, became a chartered accountant and worked for KPMG before moving to Deloitte Australia. I did my job interview around 4.30-5am to match business hours in Australia, and they made it very easy for me to come across.

Kate: Quite a few things. High on the list is the Wyndham Little Buddies Toy Library. We were part of a toy library when we lived in Kensington, that was great. Then coming over here to Wyndham we thought Little Buddies was so big and so good. I haven’t brought the kids a new toy in about four years. I also run the Point Cook Nature Playgroup, we meet at Point Cook Coastal Park. William loves the outdoors, he loves climbing trees. Having all the space we do out here – compared to Kensington – we felt very lucky in COVID, the kids were able to go outside to play. The Sanctuary Lakes coastal area and bike paths are amazing, and up near the homestead. Also Werribee zoo, we joke that if we move, we’re moving to the zoo.

James: We also have two children, William who will be four in four months’ time and Abigail who will be two in March. What made you want to live in Australia? James: We were definitely planning to come to Australia before we got married. I think we started applying in September 2014. Kate: We came to Melbourne for the honeymoon and said, ‘We like it’. We are very grateful to Australia. It feels like South Africa, but safe. We said even from the day we arrived, ‘It’s hot and we can wind down the window to the car? That’s amazing’. It’s unsafe to do that in South Africa.

Do you have a favourite place to eat in Wyndham? James: In terms of a favourite meal, there are two places depending on what we feel like, Fresh Chilli in Laverton and Ohana Pizza in Werribee South. Did you want to add anything else? James: My great-grandmother was born here. She was the last person in my family to be an Australian citizen. She lived in Port Melbourne but went with her parents to South Africa. Who knows, I may have some long-lost relatives in Australia.

Kate: I grew up in Johannesburg, James and I lived down the road from each other. I studied a BA of production management, which is audio-visual production. I worked at the South African equivalent of Foxtel, doing promotions and things like that. We married in South Africa before we came to Australia.

The Try Youth Club services of Laverton and Werribee will be combined for a trial period of six months after operating separately since being established three to four years ago. If the move proves successful it seems certain that the administrations of both will combine on a permanent basis.

The hope of an average family wishing to make Werribee its home in the future could be dashed if the state government persists with plans to introduce a levy system to pay for urban development, according to the Werribee council. Angry councillors say such a levy would fall onto the shoulders of land developers and in turn onto the average family who wants to build a home.

Wyndham council has threatened to pull out of negotiations with Victoria University (VU) for a shared athletic track and rugby field ear-marked for Hoppers Lane. In a damning presentation mayor councillor Henry Barlow moved a resolution at Monday’s council’s meeting “that the council withdraw from further negotiations with university and instruct officers to prepare a master plan for the development of an athletics track at The Grange site“.

A headline act Jenny Carland’s family has witnessed the evolution of news – from stacks of daily newspapers and magazines to news at your fingertips with online services. The Nextra Sunbury Newsagency has navigated the changes and remains a vital part of the community. Jenny reminisces with Jessica Micallef and chats about what’s next …

enny Carland is proud of the legacy her family will leave in Sunbury. For nearly nine decades, a member of Jenny’s family – from her grandparents to her own children – has been behind the counter of the Nextra Sunbury Newsagency. Her grandparents William and Ellen Davies purchased the store from Mr and Mrs Gaulton in 1932. Nearly 20 years later, Jenny’s parents Ron and Glenise Geyer took over ownership. “We were the hub of the community,” Jenny said. “Newspapers and magazines were massive back in the olden days. When I was a little girl, we also sold bikes, toys, we had a little library, we used to sell fire crackers, cakes, ice creams and milkshakes, footballs and football jumpers. “I still have one those scoops for the ice cream with the wooden handle. We sold anything.” In nearly 90 years, four generations of Jenny’s family have worked at the store. Jenny started working there full-time in 2004, before she and her husband Gerald took ownership in 2015.

“In 2004, we had two beautiful staff members who had never taken long service leave. I thought I could take a year off teaching so that they could take long service leave … and I’ve been here ever since,” she said. After Jenny’s dad passed away in 2010, she considered selling the family business but she said newsagencies were declining and they couldn’t sell it. “The banks weren’t loaning money for the newsagency because they could see the decline and it wasn’t worth it,” she said. “Ever since then, I have been making changes.” At a time when technology was evolving and news was made easily available online, Jenny decided to pivot her business in a new direction. Now the newsagency sells gifts, clothes, accessories, homewares, books and cards, as well as traditional newspapers and magazines. It’s also a TattsLotto outlet and has sold 30 division one-winning tickets since 1972. “Whatever wasn’t in Sunbury or what people were asking for, I developed it into my store,”

Jenny said. “It’s been really successful, and people have loved it. “Newspapers and magazines are still important but it’s just changed because you can get your news anywhere. “You get news alerts on your phone … people still like to have a physical paper or magazine, so we still do sell quite a few but we used to have rows and rows of magazines.” Jenny has decided now is the time to take a step back from the family legacy and retire, and has sold the business to a new family. She said she was proud of what her family had achieved over the many years. “It’s a really big job to run a business at this size and that is why it’s time for me to retire,” she said. “I want to be there to look after my grandchildren. I want the simple things now. “My grandparents and parents would be really proud of me and I love that. I don’t feel like I am letting anyone down.” Jenny will hand over the helm to the new owners on March 1.

MINI M INI B BURGERS URGERS Ingredients 500g lean beef mince 1 small carrot, grated 1 small red onion, grated 1/2 cup grated cheese 1 zucchini, grated 1 egg, lightly beaten

2 Weetbix, crushed 1 tablespoon tomato sauce 1 tablespoon olive oil Mini burger buns (or 8 slices bread) Lettuce 4 cherry tomatoes, halved

Method 1. Combine mince, carrot, onion, cheese, zucchini, egg, Weetbix and sauce in a bowl. Mix well. 2. Form into small balls and press flat with the palm of your hand. 3. Heat oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Cook burgers for 3 to 4 minutes on each side or until cooked through. 4. Toast buns (optional) and top each with a burger, lettuce, tomato and any other salads you like. Serve. TIP: Bread slices can be used instead of buns - remove the crusts and cut each piece into 4 squares or use a shape cutter to create circles. *Uncooked burgers can be frozen, roll in flour and place between baking paper sheets to avoid sticking. Method 1. Using a ratio of 1 part warm water to 1 1/2 parts Plaster of Paris, stir together as much wet chalk as you want in a certain colour. 2. Add paint, squirt by squirt, until you get the shade you want. Keep stirring until the colour is evenly distributed and any lumps have been mashed away. 3. Roll tubes of wax paper to the width you want your chalk at and tape one end closed using masking tape. 4. Spoon wet chalk mixture into a ziplock bag, close it and snip the corner to make a piping bag. 5. Pour the mixture into the prepared wax tubes (add extra tape if you need to) and stand upright in a jar or box to dry. 6. Leave chalk for 24 hours to dry. 7. Undo tape and remove paper on each tube to reveal your chalk stick - and it’s ready to use! TIP: Toilet paper rolls are great moulds for sidewalk chalk sticks, just line with wax paper. Qashqai fades to black By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring With a completely new Qashqai waiting in the wings, Nissan has come up with something special as a swansong to the present generation of the top-selling crossover vehicle – the Qashqai Midnight Edition. Selling more than a million units since its introduction in Europe in 2014, the new Qashqai will introduce to the motoring world Nissan’s ePower drive system, which offers full electric drive to the wheels. A high-output battery and powertrain integrated with the petrol engine, power generator, inverter and a motor, in a conventional hybrid the wheels are driven by electric motor and petrol engine combined. With ePower, the petrol engine is not connected to the wheels, it simply charges the battery and unlike a full electric vehicle, the power source is the engine, rather than battery only. However, I digress. While the third generation of the Qashqai is clocking up the kilometres in testing on European roads in preparation for a world launch in the northern spring, Nissan Down Under is maintaining interest in the present model with the addition of the Midnight Edition. Slotting in between the N-Sport and Ti variants, at $35,900, plus on-road costs, the compact SUV, as the name suggests, takes on dramatic gloss black highlights in contrast to its five body colours. Standard features offered across the range include Intelligent Key with keyless entry and close, push button ignition, electronic park brake, handsfree phone system, cruise control, manual tilt-and-reach adjustable steering column, 60 / 40 split fold second-row seating, ISOFIX child restraint anchorage points and four rear cargo area luggage hooks.

In contrast to the dark theme, LED headlights, sensing dusk, spring into action and as with the range-topping Ti, Nissan’s adaptive low beam tracks the steering angle, illuminating around corners.

Interior Styling In keeping with the Midnight moniker, the Qashqai pays homage to darkness, with the gloss black signature V-motion grille front and

headliner and air vents defined in gloss black. The steering wheel, gearshift knob and stick surround are accented in black, while a similar design is carried by a leather centre console lid. Alcantara and leather accented seats are standard on the Midnight Edition, with the driver and front passenger seats manually adjustable six ways. A two-way lumbar support tops off the lot. The 60 / 40 split rear seat set-up incorporates a centre armrest, which folds down to provide two extra cup holders.

Infotainment Class-leading audio and connectivity set the standard here with DAB+ digital radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth streaming with voice recognition and satellite navigation with traffic tracking. All are controlled through a 7-inch colour touch-screen display, which sadly at times, because of the angle at which it is set, loses definition through reflection of exterior light.

Engines / transmissions As with all other models in the Qashqai range, the Midnight Edition relies on the carried-over 2-litre direct injection petrol engine, mated with an Xtronic continuously variable automatic transmission with shift and Eco modes.

Safety Standard safety specification includes a 360-degree surround view camera system with

Midnight’s performance on test was par for the Qashqai course. At cruising speed, so long as there was no call for instant response to the accelerator pedal, the car fairly skipped along. The motor was generally quiet, unless pushed, when there was a resulting rasp. Unlike some CVTs with an intrusive whine at high revs, the Xtronic acts like a traditional automatic gearbox, stepping through the changes under hard acceleration. It also uses Intelligent Engine Braking to mimic standard shifting to a lower gear to deliver smooth deceleration. With a maker’s claim of combined urban / highway fuel consumption of 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres the test car a couple of times tipped over 10 litres per 100 kilometres around town, while 6.2 litres per 100 kilometres, popped up on a motorway run. The ride was on the firm side, a consequence of the low profile tyres on 19-inch rims, but there was plenty of grip and little body roll on bends. However, the car did pick up plenty of road noise and every blemish was noted on uneven surfaces. The boot capacity of the Qashqai is good, with 430 litres of cargo space. There is a space-saver spare wheel under the boot floor. Towing capacity is 729 kg unbraked, 1200 kg braked.

Summary It all comes down to a straight choice: sticking with the striking looks but dated technology of the Midnight Edition, or hanging in there for the next-gen Qashqai with the possibility of owning the ePower petrol / electric hybrid option. 29 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 17 February, 2021

A new year brings new beginnings – and often times, the desire to set new year resolutions for your health and fitness. These resolutions come with good intentions, and for the most part are a great stepping stone to making some great improvements in your lifestyle. But, how many times have you set a health or fitness-based resolution with a strong start through January and even into February, only to have your motivation and desire to see it through peter out by March or April? This is why setting a goal, one using the SMART technique, can be much more effective – and you’ll be more likely to succeed in achieving your goal than you might a long-term resolution. For the simple reason that a SMART goal has clear outcomes and clear steps for achievement. Let’s look at a typical fitness-related new year resolution, and turn it into a SMART goal. ‘In 2021, I am going to walk every day’ – this resolution has great intentions, but it is not clear on how far you’d walk, nor why you want to walk every day. It’s end point is 12 months away and has an easy failure point – a missed walk one day. Instead, let’s reword this into a SMART goal. ‘During January and February 2021, I will walk 3km before work, on work days, to help decrease my resting heart rate’. But, just how is this a SMART goal? It’s specific – the goal is very clear on what,

setting yourself up for failure by expecting to walk every day. It allows for the ups and downs of day-to-day life. And it’s time-bound – the goal has an end point (in this case, the end of February). Doesn’t two months feel much more achievable than 12? The shorter time frame here allows you to reassess at the end of the two months to work out if you want to increase distance or days for the next two months. Importantly, this goal also outlines why you are walking. If you want to dig a bit deeper into why you have set a goal, then ask yourself

‘Why?’ three times and see if that gives you a clearer picture. Why do you want to improve your fitness? Why do you want to improve your health? What would achieving your goal mean to you? The more specific you can be with yourself about your health and fitness goals, the greater chance you have of achieving them. Of course, you will need to work at it. But having the specifics of your goal written down somewhere will give you a reference point if the going does get tough – and help you to continue with it.

SPORT Former AFL player joins Roxburgh Park

The chance to play football with his three nephews has led Collingwood premiership player Ben Johnson to Roxburgh Park Football Club. The Magpies last week announced Johnson, who played 235 AFL games for the Pies, had signed on with the club for the Essendon District Football League division 1 season. Magpies coach Michael Farrelly said it was exciting to get someone of Johnson’s calibre at the club. Johnson retired from the AFL at the end of the 2013 season. Farrelly said he believed it was the first time that Roxburgh Park had a former AFL player at the club. “It’s been in the works since before Christmas,” he said. “He [Johnson] did a session on Wednesday and looked good and looked fit. He hasn’t played properly in the last few years, but his knowledge, experience, skills and stories will help 10-fold.

“His ability to play the game hasn’t gone away. Wednesday was the biggest number of people we’ve had at training in my four years there.” Farrelly said the conversation for the move to Roxburgh Park started between Johnson and his nephews and went from there. When it was put to the club, there was no hesitation. Zac, Luke and Nathan Reichelt have all joined the club in recent years. The 2021 season is set to be their first one together at the Magpies. Farrelly said they hadn’t spoken about how many games Johnson may play. Johnson has most recently played superules football and was planning to continue this year to keep fit. Johnson is the third former Collingwood player to sign with EDFL division 1 sides for this year, including “ratpack” member Heath Shaw. Farrelly said he expected a bit of banter

Sport on hold – again By Tara Murray Sporting competitions came to a screeching halt at the weekend, with Victorians back in stage 4 COVID-19 lockdown. All weekend matches for both juniors and seniors were called off, and training cancelled until Thursday at the earliest, following the state government’s announcement on Friday. Under stage 4 restrictions, outside exercise is limited to two hours a day per person within five kilometres of your house and with a maximum of two people or members of your house. Gyms and sporting facilities are closed, along with sporting clubs. Among the competitions affected are the NAB League Girls football competition, a number of cricket competitions, Bowls Victoria pennant, Baseball Victoria competitions and the Country Basketball and Victorian Junior Basketball League competitions, as well as local domestic competitions for a number of sports. Some cricket competitions had finals scheduled for this weekend. Many competitions had started seasons later than usual due to last year’s lockdown and were running restricted seasons. All of last year’s winter sports seasons were completely cancelled in Melbourne due to lockdowns. The Gisborne and District Cricket Association pulled the pin on all matches on Thursday, a day before the premier’s announcement, in response to several locations in Sunbury being identified as high risk locations, including the Sunbury Shopping Centre. The competition has junior and senior teams across Sunbury, the Macedon Ranges, Melton and Moorabool. GDCA president Rob McIntyre said cancelling one round of cricket was better than cancelling a whole season. “This is not just a Sunbury COVID issue. Many people from Kyneton, Woodend, Gisborne, Riddell, Romsey and the wider area work, shop or go to school in Sunbury,” he said. “We don’t know how many of these people have visited the exposure sites and we certainly don’t know how many have been tested and have self-isolated waiting for their results. “The potential is there to shut the whole area down for weeks again should the virus spread into these communities. “We are not prepared to put the health and safety of our cricket participants and members of the wider community at risk.” McIntyre said they would review health authorities advice following the weekend and then consider if matches can resume the following weekend. Kyneton raring to go A year off hasn’t halted the momentum of the Kyneton Netball Club. After slowly rebuilding their netball program in recent years, the club is this year set to field a full set of sides in the Bendigo Netball League for the first time since 2016. Netball director Julie Priestley said they were keen and positive ahead of the season, which is set to start on April 10. “It’s the best year we’ve had for quite a few years for trials, which is quite positive,” she said. “There’s a lot of opportunity and we’re looking to have five teams. “We haven’t had under-17s for nearly five years.” Tylah Marchbank has been reappointed coach of the A-squad. She was set to coach for the first time last year before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. She will be a playing coach, returning from a knee injury she suffered in 2019. Priestley said Marchbank, who has plenty of experience, had fitted in well. She said the A-squad, which would include the club’s top two sides, would have a few new additions this season. While keeping the new arrivals close to their chest, Priestley said the club was aiming for a finals berth for the A-grade team with much of the 2019 side returning. Among those are the Mangan sisters Rachelle, Jessica and Brooke, and Michelle Fletcher. “We’re looking similar to other years with a few new players coming in,” Priestley said. “They play extremely well as a team and are just in sync with each other. We just missed out on finals in 2019, our first year back in A-grade. “We’re aiming for finals.” Priestley said they had good numbers for their B-grade and B-reserve teams, but were still looking for a coach and assistant coach to look after those teams. Former A-grade coach Di Guest-Oakley is coaching the under-17s. Priestley said Guest-Oakley and former netball director Cara Grambeau had done a lot of hard work in recent years to get that side back up and going.
