The Rip Curl GromSearch national final will swap the open ocean for man-made waves in Tullamarine this year. The country’s top junior surfers will be riding the waves in URBNSURF’S artificial wave park next month as they compete for the title of GromSearch National Champion. Surfing Victoria chief executive Adam Robertson said the organisation was “stoked” to be hosting the event at URBNSURF. “The series has proven … to be an integral part of the junior pathway to the WSL Championship Tour with many national champions going on to massive successes,” Mr Robertson said. The GromSearch will feature a new wave designed specifically for the event, which URBNSURF says is one of the most high-performance waves capable of being produced. URBNSURF brand and marketing manager Rupert Partridge said the manufactured waves will make talent the focus. “Taking out the uncontrolled element [of the ocean] will show the technique, ability and skills of surfers, side by side on the same wave,” Mr Partridge said. Lockdown waiting game By Tara Murray Brimbank residents are eagerly waiting to find out if Victoria will be released from a five-day stage 4 lockdown tomorrow night. The state was plunged into a “circuit breaker” lockdown on Friday night in response to an outbreak that stemmed from Melbourne Airport’s Holiday Inn. On Monday, Victoria recorded one locally acquired case of COVID-19 and one case in hotel quarantine, bringing the total number of active cases to 21. Many Brimbank residents rushed to the

shops on Friday afternoon with reports of lengthy queues as people attempted to stock up on essentials before the lockdown began. Similar scenes across the state forced major supermarkets to reinstate limits on some items. The lockdown left shattered businesses questioning how they would cope ahead of Valentine’s Day. A western suburbs florist, who didn’t want to be named, said that Valentine’s Day sets them up for the rest of the year. “I’ve already paid for all the flowers,” she said. “It’s at least $15,000 and I don’t know what is going to happen.

“There’s a lot of pressure on us as we’ve already purchased them. What if we can’t sell them?” Vic Scherri, who owns Sunbury’s Vic’s Food and Wine, said the latest shutdown had left him $20,000 out-of-pocket. He said Valentine’s Day was usually his restaurant’s third busiest day of the year after Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. “This is absolutely horrendous,” he said on Friday. “The government is saying it’s [the lockdown] going to only be five days but anything can happen. It could be for a week, it could go on

for longer.” Two Brimbank locations remain as high risk exposure sites after a 50-year-old woman, who has since tested positive for coronavirus, visited them. Bid to extend landfill hours By Tara Murray The Barro Group is considering asking the Environment Protection Authority for the ability to extend its hours of operation at the Kealba Landfill site to reduce the time needed for remediation works. The group has been doing remediation work to put out spot fires that have been burning at the landfill for more than a year. In a letter sent out to the community ahead of an online community forum this week, the group said under the changes, work would commence an hour earlier on weekdays and

they would undertake remediation works between 6am and noon on Saturdays. “Across the course of a week, it is anticipated up to an additional 11 hours of excavation and treatment could be undertaken depending on the nature of the material,” the letter stated. “The additional hours would add to the range of other measures implemented over the past four months to reduce the overall time needed to safely complete remediation works.” The letter said the temporary suspension of ‘ordinary works’, introduction of process enhancements relating to the daily cover requirements for material on the temporary

laydown area, the deployment of additional equipment and a reorganisation of rostered work were among other measures taken. The letter also stated that no environmental events were detected during the shutdown over the Christmas and new year period. The community forum, to be held on Thursday night, is the third held by the Barro Group. Barro said the views of residents are important to it as the landfill operator. “While the forum will provide interested community members with an update on progress of works it will also seek input from residents on a proposal to introduce additional

new measures aimed at speeding up the remediation process.” The EPA will be in attendance. In an online update last week, the EPA said Barro was complying with its EPA notice and that it had observed good progress in recent weeks, with excavation now occurring deeper in the landfill and targeting the sub-surface hotspots near the base of the landfill. It said that the most recent odour survey in the St Albans community and onsite, noted odours had less intensity than previous weeks. The forum is on Thursday from 7pm via Zoom. Time to hit the fairway Ever wanted to putt for a birdie or whack a ball down the fairway but haven’t had the chance? Keilor Public Golf Course might have you covered with a number of free activities across March as part of the Get Into Golf program. Course general manager Jack McDonald said they were excited to finally get the Golf Australia program running, after the initial program last year was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s program will include weekly

women’s clinics and all-abilities clinics. “We had 30 ladies sign up for last year’s program before it was cancelled,” he said. “There’s been a lot of interest already for this year. We’ve had two or three people put their names down for the all-abilities clinic. Hopefully we get a few more put their names down shortly.” Other initiatives during March include upgrades on driving range buckets, ladies social golf and Food Truck Fridays.

They will also have a walk the course, allowing people to walk around the back nine and take in the sights without hitting a ball. Work will begin next month on a new intersection to improve access to the Melton Highway for people living in new estates in Fraser Rise. The new intersection will be constructed by the developers of the Kerani Heights estate. Crown Drive, which currently starts at Beattys Road, will be extended to the Melton Highway, while a new intersection at the corner of Crown Drive and the Melton Highway will be constructed. Estate manager Sudha Williams said the new intersection would be fully signalised. He said Melton Highway will be duplicated at the intersection and it’s hoped this will result in minimal traffic disruptions while the intersection is being constructed. Two new lanes on the southern side will be constructed first, which will not impact the existing road. The northern section will then be completed. Work on the intersection is expected to be finished later this year. Mr Williams said the new intersection would provide easier access to the Melton Highway for not only the residents of Kerani Heights, but also other developments in the area. As of January, more than half the land had been sold in the Kerani Heights estate. The neighbouring Sienna and Aldo estates, both on the Melton Highway at Fraser Rise, are also under construction. Council takes soil fight to court By Benjamin Millar Melton council has launched legal action in the Supreme Court against the state government’s approval of toxic West Gate Tunnel soil being dumped in Ravenhall, the latest twist in the long-running saga. State Planning Minister Richard Wynne late last year delivered approval for Cleanaway to receive and store contaminated soil from the $6.8 billion project at its Ravenhall tip and for Maddingley Brown Coal to take the soil in Bacchus Marsh. But Melton council’s chief executive last week instructed lawyers to challenge the

planning minister’s green light for the soil to be processed in the area. The decision comes hot on the heels of the Moorabool Environment Group (MEG) launching its own legal proceedings in the Supreme Court against the minister’s approval for Bacchus Marsh. Melton council legal and governance manager Christine Denyer told last week’s council meeting that council resolved last November to seek legal advice on the planning minister’s decision. “The legal advice the subject of the resolution was obtained and provided to councillors,” she said. “Having considered the legal advice

… the chief executive officer has exercised his delegation and he has given instructions to council’s external lawyers to issue proceedings on its behalf in relation to the minister’s decision to approve the planning scheme amendment.” Ms Denyer told the meeting that the council’s Stop The Soil campaign has seen more than 2500 residents send emails expressing their concerns about the dumping to key decision makers, including Mr Wynne. She confirmed the proceeding was filed on February 4, warning the council could face a hefty cost payout if the challenge is unsuccessful.

“The legal costs of the proceeding are expected to be in the order of $70,000-$100,000 and there is a risk that if council is unsuccessful that the costs of the other side, which would be in the same order, would be for council to pay – and that’s the same order per defendant.” Tunnelling on the project is yet to begin as Transurban, builder CPB John Holland and the state government tussle over who will pick up the tab for the cost blowout from the contaminated soil. The tunnel was due to open in 2022, but Transurban last week announced the delays mean completion will occur in 2024 at the earliest.

Lions launch festival Music, food and community will be the focus of the inaugural Lions Taylors Lakes Community Picnic and Music Fest – a COVID recovery event. The event will be held later this month and is a chance for locals to get back out and experience some music, while supporting Taylors Lakes Lions Club. There will be two performance stages, with people able to bring along a picnic or buy food, including from the “obligatory” Lions barbecue. The line-up includes cover bands, solo acts, duos and even some up-and-coming young Brimbank artists, keen to get back on stage after last year. Food vendors include coffee, gelati, hot jam donuts, hot food and a sausage sizzle. As well as the entertainment, the event will

“re-launch” the Taylors Lakes Lions Club, which has suffered a huge disruption to its events, capacity to support charities and contribution to local projects due to the pandemic. The club hopes to hold a giant raffle on the day. Entry is free. The event is planned for February 28 between 10am and 4pm at the Taylors Creek Linear Park. Mental health care close to home By Tara Murray A 12-bed facility offering short-term mental health care for women is set to open at Sunshine Hospital next year. Minister for Mental Health James Merlino and St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman unveiled plans for the Women’s Prevention and Recovery Care (PARC) facility last week. The centre will be operated by NorthWestern Mental Health and will provide 24-hour support and treatment in a home-like setting.

- Natalie Suleyman The facility will be the first in the state to provide accommodation for accompanying dependents. The facility has been designed to create a safe and welcoming environment with private bedrooms complete with en suites, a

communal kitchen, dining and living areas, breakout spaces and an outdoor garden. The tender phase to appoint a builder is expected to get under way in the coming weeks. Ms Suleyman said the facility will help fill a gap in mental health services. “The new facility will offer women who are experiencing mental illness or who are in the early stages of recovery from an acute mental illness with recovery-focused treatments, closer to their home, families and community,” she said. “The Women’s PARC facility in

Sunshine is one of 25 Prevention and Recovery Care facilities across Victoria that will help fill the transitional gap between community and hospital-based care.” The program is part of the Victorian government’s $325.7 million commitment to mental health, outlined in its 10-year Mental Health Plan. It also responds to key recommendations made by the Royal Commission into Victoria’s mental health system to modernise and build service capacity and provide better, tailored models of care.

Trio land apprenticeships Three western suburbs apprentices are hitting the tools in Ardeer as part of the CitiPower and Powercor’s apprenticeship program. More than 1200 people applied for the 2021 intake, with 10 candidates selected to work across the state, including at Ballarat, Bendigo, Echuca, Horsham, Geelong, Ardeer and Burnley. Lineworker Riley Moerenhout, cable jointer Jordan Beckman and meter technician Sam Cordy are all completing their apprenticeships at the Ardeer depot. The new apprentices will receive hands-on learning and training through Holmesglen TAFE. Their work will range from delivering major works programs to restoring power safely and quickly to customers if a fault occurs. For Mr Beckman, who lives in Brookfield, it was third time lucky applying for a apprenticeship with CitiPower and Powercor. “I was quite surprised that I could get a

position with the odds what they were,” he said. “I’d applied three years in a row. I’m quite excited to get out there. “I had family and friends in the business and they really liked it. I like the team atmosphere in the position and the overall culture.” CitiPower and Powercor head of field services, Ross Young, said apprenticeships are an important way the company invests in their people. “We are pleased to be able to create 10 new jobs across western Victorian and the CBD as our state rebuilds its economy after the COVID-19 pandemic.” Since 2001, the two companies have invested in more than 400 apprentices and trainees Tara Murray Sam Cordy, Jordan Beckman and Riley Moerenhout. Back to school Twins Colby and Sebastian, and Rania and Dania, were among the excited pupils starting school at Furlong Park School for Deaf Children last week. The school reopened for 2021 on Thursday and there was plenty of fun for the two sets of twins and their school friends. Colby and Sebastian, 8, and Rania and Dania, 6, are two of three sets of twins at the school this year. The school has about 65 students. A third set of twins will start on February 11 and will be part of the school’s early years program. Principal Lee Bullock said it was possibly the first time the school had welcomed three sets of twins.

There have been at least eight factory, waste management or tip fires across the west and Hume since October, while the Kealba landfill has had underground fires burning continuously for more than a year. Former LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley and former state MLC member Colleen Hartland say enough is enough. “It’s a long-running issue,” Mr Rowley said. “It doesn’t matter which party has been in power at the time, they haven’t done enough clean-up of the west.

“The urgency to clean it [industry] up has never been greater.” Mr Rowley said during his time with LeadWest, from 2010-18, one of the biggest concerns raised by local councils was the need for a cleaner, greener and more liveable western metropolitan area. “We were constantly talking about it with the other tiers of government, about the investment needed in the west to make it cleaner and greener. “It just seems that it is taking a long time to get there.” Mr Rowley said an Environment Protection Act, which changes how the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) regulates pollution, waste and contamination in Victoria, had been

delayed for 12 months. “We’ve been waiting for so long to have confidence to be able to breath fresh air. Confidence that our creeks aren’t going to be polluted.” He suggests forming a steering committee which would include the EPA, WorkSafe, MFB and council representatives to have a co-ordinated approach to industry clean-up. “I don’t think questions are being asked on Spring Street as often as they should.” He also proposed government funding to help bring old industrial estates up to the 21st century and the introduction of better air quality monitoring systems. Ms Hartland is a member of the Facebook group Anti-Toxic Waste Alliance, which was

set up after the West Footscray warehouse fire which spewed toxic fumes across the western suburbs for days in August 2018. She said the group, a non-political alliance of community groups, organisations and individuals, wants action. “There’s been a spate of these fires,” she said. “There’s been three in the last 10 days. “The EPA and the state government don’t seem to be taking it seriously.” Ms Hartland said the group wanted more regulation on industrial sites, clear information about when the EPA is called in and when and for how long air quality equipment is set up. She has also called for the act to be introduced. ■ Fire

Brimbank mayor Ranka Rasic and St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman officially opened the $1.2 million Gateway to Sunshine transformation project last week. The project, which was funded by the council and the state government, has resulted in significant improvements to the northern entrance to Sunshine on Hampshire and Ballarat roads, and the rejuvenation of MB Lynch Memorial Gardens. The work included new lighting on the corner of Hampshire and Ballarat roads, pathway lighting in MB Lynch Memorial Gardens, two custom sculptural shelter structures, new seating, new plants and landscaping, the

relocation of existing historic rose bushes, new pedestrian paths and a new widened footpath on Hampshire Road. Cr Rasic said the project has delivered a welcoming, safe and vibrant garden and public space for the community. “Creating spaces that are well-designed and reduce the risk of crime and anti-social behaviour are important to the council and the community,” she said. “We want people to feel safe in their community … more socially connected, and confident participating in public life. “The gardens … connect with Sunshine’s industrial past and heritage through … colours, materials and amenities.”

A motorcyclist is fighting for life after a collision with a car in Deer Park on Wednesday. Police believe the rider was travelling east along Ballarat Road about 6.45am when the collision occurred. The rider sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital by paramedics. The female driver of the vehicle was uninjured. Altona North train station call By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council is lobbying the state government for new train stations to service the areas of Altona North, Newport west and Brooklyn. Altona North’s population is set to boom with the development of the former Don Smallgoods site, known as Precinct 15. The precinct, which is half the size of Melbourne’s CBD, is being developed into 3000 dwellings for about 7000 people. council campaign for a new passenger train link on the existing freight train line from Sunshine to Newport, with a new train station to be built in the vicinity of Altona North/ Brooklyn. “Residents in Brooklyn at the moment need to drive further out to stations such as Tottenham, West Footscray, Yarraville,

Spotswood or Newport in order to access any type of train commuter network,” she said. A station in this vicinity could also serve future residents of the Bradmill site on the northern side of the West Gate Freeway at Yarraville. Cr Tony Briffa said the former Paisley station, near the Millers Junction shopping centre at Altona North, could also be reinstated. The station closed in 1985. Cr Briffa moved a motion that the council work with the Altona, Seaholme, Altona North, Brooklyn and Newport west communities on a public campaign to advocate for the

reinstatement of a train station in Altona North or Newport west on the Werribee line. “It would serve the Altona North Millers Junction very well if it was in the Altona North area, particularly if it was near where Paisley station was,” she said. “With Precinct 15 and the addition of 7000 residents – my god – the impact of the West Gate Tunnel and the impact of that on our local roads, it makes sense to increase capacity of trains/public transport in that area. “The train line already goes there – the Werribee line – so this is not a big infrastructure spend/build by the state government.”

Big thanks for mums This Saturday will be all about mums at St Albans Football Club. The club is hosting an event, Mum’s in Local Footy, to celebrate the contribution of mums, past and present, to the game. Saints junior football co-ordinator Laura Kretiuk said a conversation between a few mums at the club got the idea started. “It was going to be a handful of mums from seniors and juniors,” she said. “I’m friends with a lot of mums on social media and at Christmas time everyone was saying that we should catch up for lunch. “Once it got moving, we started a chat of six or seven of us … the club’s welfare officer added some other mums and it’s now up to 30.” St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman and local councillors have also been invited. Ms Kretiuk said the day, which they hope to make an annual event, is about recognising

some of the unsung heroes of local football clubs. “It’s a celebration of a collective group of mums, past and present from St Albans Football Club whose kids (some who are now adults) commenced their football journey as a junior, may now be playing seniors or who have undertaken a role at the club. “They do so much during the training and game day. Construction blitz at station By Tara Murray Watergardens train station is a hive of construction of activity, with work under way on two projects. Rail Projects Victoria and the Department of Transport are working on separate projects, which will provide better services on the Sunbury line and improve Watergardens station. A Rail Projects Victoria spokesperson said early works on the Sunbury line upgrade were progressing well. The works include power upgrades and platform extensions and new wheelchair boarding platforms at eight stations. Train stabling will also be expanded at Watergardens and Calder Park. “Work is currently under way to extend the platforms at Watergardens station and build extra train stabling to store the new trains overnight – and in the coming months we’ll be realigning sections of track between Watergardens station and Pioneer Park in Sydenham, and installing underground services for train signalling near the station,” the spokesperson said. The line upgrade is on track to be completed by the end of 2023. The project is part of the Metro Tunnel Project and will allow more modern trains to run through the Metro Tunnel and out to Sunbury from 2025, creating capacity for 113,000 extra passengers every week. The Department of Transport is working around the clock to build three new lifts at Watergardens station. The new lifts will provide more space, better CCTV to improve safety, and a new separate back-up power generator. The lifts will be open later this year.

There will be more work on the Sunbury line later this month, with major works to be conducted by Rail Projects Victoria as part of the line upgrade.

Buses will replace trains between February 26 and March 8, as crews install overhead power structures, underground services, tracks, drainage and wheelchair boarding pads.

Works are also occurring at Albion and St Albans stations as part of the line upgrades. A state-of-the-art Signal Control Centre in Sunshine is also in its final stages of construction.

West Gate Freeway overnight closures Sunday 21 February onwards

West Gate Tunnel Project crews are working to expand the West Gate Freeway from eight to 12 lanes. The West Gate Freeway will be closed in both directions between the M80 interchange and Millers Road on: • Sunday 21 February from 9pm until 5am. • Wednesday 24 February and Thursday 25 February from 10pm (inbound) and 10:30pm (outbound) until 5am. • Friday 26 February from 11pm (inbound) and 11:59pm (outbound) until 5am. There will also be further overnight freeway closures in March. Plan ahead, allow extra travel time. Keep in mind there are other disruptions in February and March. MY BRIMBANK Duke Street Community Centre manager Lana Bedford has always called the western suburbs home. She speaks with Tara Murray about what she loves about the local area.

What are your favourite things to do around Braybrook and the surrounding areas? As a community development professional, I am passionate about building a stronger and more resilient Braybrook community. So, my favourite thing is to work with individuals and groups to give them the skills they need to undertake projects in the local community. One example is a partnership we have with Braybrook College Community Services students. Each year the students develop a community engagement project to address an area of identified need. Some examples have included a ‘Youth Mental Health Day’ and a ‘No Waste Market’ to reduce landfill. Do you have a favourite place to eat in the area? We are spoilt for choice but if was asked to choose just one it would be Braybrook STN at Central West plaza. They have an interesting menu and the coffee is great! How long have you been at the Duke Street Community House? In 2000 I joined Duke Street as volunteer – a support worker for the Western Women’s Domestic Violence Support Network – sadly this program no longer runs out of Duke Street. From 2006-12 I held several roles at Duke Street including training officer, project

manager and community development officer. In 2016 I returned to the organisation to take on the role of manager. What does the house do and why is it so important to the local community? Duke Street Community is a not-for-profit incorporated association and provides many invaluable community services, including occasional childcare, and conducts a wide range of programs for adults and children of all backgrounds. It is a registered provider of Adult Community Education programs and runs a broad range of accredited and non-accredited programs. As a small, friendly and accessible community house, Duke Street is well placed to support individual learning needs in a safe, informal and relaxed atmosphere at low cost How are things at the house now with COVID-19 restrictions easing? As a training provider our focus is on entry level language classes, the development of basic language, literacy and numeracy skills, digital literacy, and classes for work preparedness. With COVID-19 restrictions easing our education classes have resumed to face-to-face learning. This is fantastic as most of our students are CALD learners and being able to provide face-to-face support is important for this group. Tell us something about yourself that not many people know? I was lucky enough to walk the red carpet at the Kath & Kimderella movie premier. It was so much fun to meet the cast!

What is your connection to Braybrook and the local area? I’m a proud ‘westie’. I’ve had a lifelong connection with the area. I was raised in Sunshine and Deer Park and I have worked in Braybrook and Sunshine for many years.

Happy at home By Tara Murray Judy Ingram isn’t in any hurry to leave her house. The Delahey woman, who has a number of medical conditions and a low immune system, has been housebound since March last year when the COVID-19 pandemic began. She’s left the house just twice for medical reasons since March 13, 2020. “I don’t see the point of rushing out to have a meal at the pub,” she said last week before Victoria was plunged back into stage 4 lockdown. “It makes no sense after 11 months to go out and risk it. I might be over cautious, but I just figure I’ve stuck it out this long, I’ll stick it out for a few more months, until I can get the vaccine.” While Mrs Ingram has opted not to leave her house, she does allow her family and friends to visit – one at a time. Her husband Ian, who has been allowed by doctors to leave the house. “Ian can go and put the TattsLotto on and go to the post office and butchers. We’re still getting the groceries delivered, but he can go and get some milk if we’re out,” Mrs Ingram said. “He’s reasonably restricted in what he can do, cause he doesn’t want to bring it home to me.” While she’s been housebound, Mrs Ingram hasn’t been short of things to do. Like most people, she’s read a number of books and done a few jigsaw puzzles. Her community work has also kept her busy. “I’ve been doing the community register for 11 years,” she said. “On a Monday, I’ll call people on the register who are over 65 and say hello. I’ve been able to do that out of my house. “I’ve also discovered Zoom. I’ve gone kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

“I had been hoping to do community meetings in person, but it looks like I’ll be doing Zoom meetings for quite a while.” She said she’d love to get back out in person and go to community events and start planting trees again, but knows that can wait. Mrs Ingram said many people she had spoken to, including some who didn’t have the same health issues, were concerned about the pandemic and hadn’t gone back to their normal

habits. She said if she’s not illegible to get the vaccine until late this year, she might have to change her views, but for now she’s comfortable with staying at home. “Why take the risk?” she said. “I had a friend who got it [COVID] in August and is still in hospital after the side effects. “Ian’s cousins are in hard lockdown in England and have been since April. There’s no end in sight.”

Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz is allegedly taking legal action against 26 high ranking members of the Labor Party in the fallout to her being charged by Labor interim administrators Steve Bracks and Jenny Macklin. In documents lodged with the Supreme Court of Victoria dated February 8, Ms Kairouz has brought action against several high profile party members including Federal Labor leader Anthony Albenese, Bracks and Macklin. In the documents, Ms Kairouz claims that the appointment of the administrators was invalid. She said the national executive had amended the definition of branch stacking and that she was charged under the amended changes, not the rules that were in place at the time of the alleged offences. The documents state the retrospective charging of Ms Kairouz of the alleged offences is unlawful and invalid. Ms Kairouz last week posted a statement on social media confirming that she is one of two people charged by the administrators in the probe into branch stacking in the ALP.

A headline act Jenny Carland’s family has witnessed the evolution of news – from stacks of daily newspapers and magazines to news at your fingertips with online services. The Nextra Sunbury Newsagency has navigated the changes and remains a vital part of the community. Jenny reminisces with Jessica Micallef and chats about what’s next …

enny Carland is proud of the legacy her family will leave in Sunbury. For nearly nine decades, a member of Jenny’s family – from her grandparents to her own children – has been behind the counter of the Nextra Sunbury Newsagency. Her grandparents William and Ellen Davies purchased the store from Mr and Mrs Gaulton in 1932. Nearly 20 years later, Jenny’s parents Ron and Glenise Geyer took over ownership. “We were the hub of the community,” Jenny said. “Newspapers and magazines were massive back in the olden days. When I was a little girl, we also sold bikes, toys, we had a little library, we used to sell fire crackers, cakes, ice creams and milkshakes, footballs and football jumpers. “I still have one those scoops for the ice cream with the wooden handle. We sold anything.” In nearly 90 years, four generations of Jenny’s family have worked at the store. Jenny started working there full-time in 2004, before she and her husband Gerald took ownership in 2015.

“In 2004, we had two beautiful staff members who had never taken long service leave. I thought I could take a year off teaching so that they could take long service leave … and I’ve been here ever since,” she said. After Jenny’s dad passed away in 2010, she considered selling the family business but she said newsagencies were declining and they couldn’t sell it. “The banks weren’t loaning money for the newsagency because they could see the decline and it wasn’t worth it,” she said. “Ever since then, I have been making changes.” At a time when technology was evolving and news was made easily available online, Jenny decided to pivot her business in a new direction. Now the newsagency sells gifts, clothes, accessories, homewares, books and cards, as well as traditional newspapers and magazines. It’s also a TattsLotto outlet and has sold 30 division one-winning tickets since 1972. “Whatever wasn’t in Sunbury or what people were asking for, I developed it into my store,”

Jenny said. “It’s been really successful, and people have loved it. “Newspapers and magazines are still important but it’s just changed because you can get your news anywhere. “You get news alerts on your phone … people still like to have a physical paper or magazine, so we still do sell quite a few but we used to have rows and rows of magazines.” Jenny has decided now is the time to take a step back from the family legacy and retire, and has sold the business to a new family. She said she was proud of what her family had achieved over the many years. “It’s a really big job to run a business at this size and that is why it’s time for me to retire,” she said. “I want to be there to look after my grandchildren. I want the simple things now. “My grandparents and parents would be really proud of me and I love that. I don’t feel like I am letting anyone down.” Jenny will hand over the helm to the new owners on March 1.

Cut 4 pieces of string into even lengths. 3. Thread or tie items along each piece of string, keeping the heavier items towards the bottom to act as a weight. 4. Once all 4 pieces are threaded, tie the top of each one to the straight stick (so they hang down when you hold the stick up). 5. Tie a piece of string to each end of the stick and tie together at the top, creating a hanging handle. 6. Hang your wind chime outside in the breeze and enjoy listening to your creation! Nissan Murano SUV was ahead of its time in styling and didn’t sell as well as it deserved in this country. But times have changed and these days many SUVs and crossovers have smoother lines that look quite swish. Murano has stretch-out room for four adults. Three grown-ups in the back works fine if they aren’t overly broad in the beam. Four have stretch out space. As a real bonus the flat floor at the rear seats makes life easy for the person seated in the centre. Too often they have to sit with their legs splayed around a central tunnel, but not in the big Nissan. The first Muranos arrived Down Under in September 2005. They gained strong acceptance by experts and some potential buyers because they were powered by a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine based on that in many upmarket Nissans. This gave plenty of performance and made Murano quicker, smoother and more refined than most others in this class with fourcylinder power. The second-generation Murano, introduced here in January 2009, carried the same overall theme as the original shape. However, it sat on a new platform that gave it added rigidity and a quieter ride. Seating was even more spacious and the boot had significantly more volume. The 3.5 V6 was reworked to give it more power and torque. Its excellent smoothness continued to impress. The second generation has an emphasis on a luxury look and feel, making it a complete move away from the sort-of sporty appearance of the first-generation. Audi freshens up S4, S5 range By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring Audi has capped off a busy year with the release of upgraded versions of its S4 and S5 range. Like the A4 / A5 models on which they’re based the S4 / S5 range has five model variants: S4 sedan, S4 Avant wagon, S5 Sportback hatch, S5 Coupe and S5 Cabriolet. The model upgrade has brought a boost in technology including a new infotainment system together with a number of design enhancements.

Styling Although their body shapes mirror the A4/5 the ‘S’ models are easy to distinguish with different bumpers, air inlets, side sills and rear spoiler and diffuser trim. Double, twin tailpipes and red brake calipers add the final touch to the sporting story. The refreshed S4 sedan gets new lighting designs, new grille and significant bodywork changes. S4 Avant adds aluminium roof rails and powered tailgate and luggage cover. The three S5 variants have 20-inch Audi Sport alloy wheels.

Interior The interior is stylish and restrained with a sense of practicality and a driver-friendly centre console and virtual cockpit. The S sport front seats are of soft Nappa leather and are heated with adjustable side support and a choice of three different massage modes. There are matt brushed aluminium inlays and stainless-steel pedals.

Engine / transmission All S4 and S5 variants are powered by a turbo-petrol 3.0-litre V6 which can deliver 260kW of power and 500Nm of torque. Acceleration times range from zero to 100km/h from 4.7 to 5.1 seconds. All models come with Audi’s permanent quattro all-wheel-drive system including a self-locking centre differential and adaptive damper control. The 60/40 standard rear-wheel bias, can send up to 85 per cent of the power in either direction as needed. The optional quattro sport rear differential provides even more dynamic driving qualities by splitting torque between the wheels of the rear axle.

is standard across the S4 / S5 range. Bluetooth connectivity is simple and intuitive and you also get Apple Carplay and Android Auto, as well as DAB+ digital radio.

Driving The words ‘Sport’ or letter ‘S’ can set off alarm bells for older and less supple drivers because they can mean access problems and cramped interior space. Fortunately, there are no such problems with the Audi S4 and S5, including the coupe and convertible S5 variants. There is good head and legroom, even for taller backseat passengers, with the larger door openings allowing for easy entry and exit. The instrument cluster display can be switched between a ‘hockey stick’ rev counter with a digital speedometer or standard twin conventional dials.

We were able to drive both the S5 Sportback and S4 sedan during the launch drive program which took us on a round trip from the south-west of Sydney down through the Southern Highlands. The tried and proven V6 engine is engaging and responsive and blends perfectly with the eight-speed automatic transmission allowing the engine to operate close to its ideal load point. With up to 500 Nm of torque over a wide rev range (1370 to 4500 rpm) there’s plenty of flexibility for relaxed driving. Braking is excellent with more ability than you will probably ever need in everyday situations. Standard adaptive dampers mean you can choose from Comfort, Auto and Dynamic settings. Ride quality is a good balance between

comfort and performance. The occasional bumps, inevitable on the rural roads that dominated the test route, were handled easily even when we came into some without warning in mid-corner. We’ve been able to jump the queue and get into an S4 Avant as soon as it arrives in Queensland in early January and so we can expand our opinions with our usual week-long review. This will include much more urban driving than we did on the launch program.

It’s achievable – if you can comfortably already walk 2-3km, then 3km on work days is achievable for you. Of course, you’d set the goal distance shorter or further, depending on your starting point. Either way, the goal needs to be something you know you can do. It’s realistic – by walking on work days, you are being realistic with your time, rather than

A new year brings new beginnings – and often times, the desire to set new year resolutions for your health and fitness. These resolutions come with good intentions, and for the most part are a great stepping stone to making some great improvements in your lifestyle. But, how many times have you set a health or fitness-based resolution with a strong start through January and even into February, only to have your motivation and desire to see it through peter out by March or April? This is why setting a goal, one using the SMART technique, can be much more effective – and you’ll be more likely to succeed in achieving your goal than you might a long-term resolution. For the simple reason that a SMART goal has clear outcomes and clear steps for achievement. Let’s look at a typical fitness-related new year resolution, and turn it into a SMART goal. ‘In 2021, I am going to walk every day’ – this resolution has great intentions, but it is not clear on how far you’d walk, nor why you want to walk every day. It’s end point is 12 months away and has an easy failure point – a missed walk one day. Instead, let’s reword this into a SMART goal. ‘During January and February 2021, I will walk 3km before work, on work days, to help decrease my resting heart rate’. But, just how is this a SMART goal? It’s specific – the goal is very clear on what,

setting yourself up for failure by expecting to walk every day. It allows for the ups and downs of day-to-day life. And it’s time-bound – the goal has an end point (in this case, the end of February). Doesn’t two months feel much more achievable than 12? The shorter time frame here allows you to reassess at the end of the two months to work out if you want to increase distance or days for the next two months. Importantly, this goal also outlines why you are walking. If you want to dig a bit deeper into why you have set a goal, then ask yourself

‘Why?’ three times and see if that gives you a clearer picture. Why do you want to improve your fitness? Why do you want to improve your health? What would achieving your goal mean to you? The more specific you can be with yourself about your health and fitness goals, the greater chance you have of achieving them. Of course, you will need to work at it. But having the specifics of your goal written down somewhere will give you a reference point if the going does get tough – and help you to continue with it.

The chance to play football with his three nephews has led Collingwood premiership player Ben Johnson to Roxburgh Park Football Club. The Magpies last week announced Johnson, who played 235 AFL games for the Pies, had signed on with the club for the Essendon District Football League division 1 season. Magpies coach Michael Farrelly said it was exciting to get someone of Johnson’s calibre at the club. Johnson retired from the AFL at the end of the 2013 season. Farrelly said he believed it was the first time that Roxburgh Park had a former AFL player at the club. “It’s been in the works since before Christmas,” he said. “He [Johnson] did a session on Wednesday and looked good and looked fit. He hasn’t played properly in the last few years, but his knowledge, experience, skills and stories will help 10-fold.

“His ability to play the game hasn’t gone away. Wednesday was the biggest number of people we’ve had at training in my four years there.” Farrelly said the conversation for the move to Roxburgh Park started between Johnson and his nephews and went from there. When it was put to the club, there was no hesitation. Zac, Luke and Nathan Reichelt have all joined the club in recent years. The 2021 season is set to be their first one together at the Magpies. Farrelly said they hadn’t spoken about how many games Johnson may play. Johnson has most recently played superules football and was planning to continue this year to keep fit. Johnson is the third former Collingwood player to sign with EDFL division 1 sides for this year, including “ratpack” member Heath Shaw. Farrelly said he expected a bit of banter

By Tara Murray Sporting competitions came to a screeching halt at the weekend, with Victorians back in stage 4 COVID-19 lockdown. All weekend matches for both juniors and seniors were called off, and training cancelled until Thursday at the earliest, following the state government’s announcement on Friday. Under stage 4 restrictions, outside exercise is limited to two hours a day per person within five kilometres of your house and with a maximum of two people or members of your house. Gyms and sporting facilities are closed, along with sporting clubs. Among the competitions affected are the NAB League Girls football competition, a number of cricket competitions, Bowls Victoria pennant, Baseball Victoria competitions and the Country Basketball and Victorian Junior Basketball League competitions, as well as local domestic competitions for a number of sports. Some cricket competitions had finals scheduled for this weekend. Many competitions had started seasons later than usual due to last year’s lockdown and were running restricted seasons. All of last year’s winter sports seasons were completely cancelled in Melbourne due to lockdowns. The Gisborne and District Cricket Association pulled the pin on all matches on Thursday, a day before the premier’s announcement, in response to several locations in Sunbury being identified as high risk locations, including the Sunbury Shopping Centre. The competition has junior and senior teams across Sunbury, the Macedon Ranges, Melton and Moorabool. GDCA president Rob McIntyre said cancelling one round of cricket was better than cancelling a whole season. “This is not just a Sunbury COVID issue. Many people from Kyneton, Woodend, Gisborne, Riddell, Romsey and the wider area work, shop or go to school in Sunbury,” he said. “We don’t know how many of these people have visited the exposure sites and we certainly don’t know how many have been tested and have self-isolated waiting for their results. “The potential is there to shut the whole area down for weeks again should the virus spread into these communities. “We are not prepared to put the health and safety of our cricket participants and members of the wider community at risk.” McIntyre said they would review health authorities advice following the weekend and then consider if matches can resume the following weekend. Netball director Julie Priestley said they were keen and positive ahead of the season, which is set to start on April 10. “It’s the best year we’ve had for quite a few years for trials, which is quite positive,” she said. “There’s a lot of opportunity and we’re looking to have five teams. “We haven’t had under-17s for nearly five years.” Tylah Marchbank has been reappointed coach of the A-squad. She was set to coach for the first time last year before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. She will be a playing coach, returning from a knee injury she suffered in 2019. Priestley said Marchbank, who has plenty of experience, had fitted in well. She said the A-squad, which would include the club’s top two sides, would have a few new additions this season. While keeping the new arrivals close to their chest, Priestley said the club was aiming for a finals berth for the A-grade team with much of the 2019 side returning. Among those are the Mangan sisters Rachelle, Jessica and Brooke, and Michelle Fletcher. “We’re looking similar to other years with a few new players coming in,” Priestley said. “They play extremely well as a team and are just in sync with each other. We just missed out on finals in 2019, our first year back in A-grade. “We’re aiming for finals.” Priestley said they had good numbers for their B-grade and B-reserve teams, but were still looking for a coach and assistant coach to look after those teams. Former A-grade coach Di Guest-Oakley is coaching the under-17s. Priestley said Guest-Oakley and former netball director Cara Grambeau had done a lot of hard work in recent years to get that side back up and going.
