Concept design for the new-look Gap Road level crossing. (Supplied)

Crossing design revealed By Jessica Micallef The first concept design for the new-look Gap Road level crossing in Sunbury has been released. Gap Road will be lowered under the rail line to preserve the character of the heritage-listed Sunbury station. Construction on the project was brought forward to begin this year, with the level crossing expected to be removed by late 2022, and the remaining works completed in 2023 – two years ahead of the initial 2025 completion date. About 19,000 vehicles pass through the Gap

Road level crossing each day, with the number expected to reach 27,000 in 2026, according to state government data. A three-week community consultation period was held in November last year for the public to provide feedback on the design, landscaping and public artworks for the new level crossing. Sunbury MP Josh Bull said more than 170 residents contributed to the preliminary design. “The level crossing will be gone for good by the end of 2022, with a road under rail design as promised,” he said. “This year we will see site investigations continuing as well as some early works, with

the majority of major construction towards the end of 2022.” The level crossing removal is being delivered in conjunction with the $2.1 billion Sunbury line upgrade, which includes platform extensions, train stabling modifications and rail track power upgrades at Sunbury station to enable bigger and more modern trains to run on the line. The line is expected to transport up to 113,000 passengers in peak hours every week when the Metro Tunnel is open. “We promised to remove this crossing by 2025, but this vital project has been fast tracked to synchronise works between the level

crossing removal and the $2.1 billion Sunbury line upgrade,” Mr Bull said. “It means we will only need to close the line for an extended period of time once, rather than twice, resulting in less disruption and a level crossing-free Sunbury three years ahead of schedule. “This is a critical project that will improve safety and ease congestion in the heart of our community and it is time to get it done.” The Gap Road level crossing will be the fourth crossing removed on the Sunbury line and is one of 75 “dangerous and congested” level crossings in Melbourne to be gone by 2025. 12476330-CG03-21

Phone tower decision deferred By Jessica Micallef Macedon Ranges council has deferred making a decision on a planning permit to build a telecommunications facility at Mount Gisborne. During last Wednesday’s council meeting, councillors voted to defer the application to no later than the March council meeting. The application includes the construction of a 17.5-metre high monopole at the summit of Mount Gisborne that overlooks Gisborne and the surrounding locality. It would involve the removal of some native

vegetation and would replace a tower which was previously on the site. The planning permit states that before being destroyed in a storm in July 2019, the previous tower was “pivotal” in providing voice communications for the CFA in surrounding areas. Cr Dominic Bonanno said deferring a decision on the application gave the applicant time to provide a report on why the Mount Gisborne site was preferable to other sites. It also allowed them time to consider additional sites for the tower, including Mount Aitken, other sites in Gisborne South and less

“environmentally sensitive” sites. “Giving the applicant a bit of time to give us more and better information will help answer our questions,” he said. “I am a resident in Gisborne South and we are absolutely crying for telecommunications services … you don’t know what you’ve got until you lose it. “We are in the middle of a black spot. My phone line has gone down so I have no communication at all. “I understand how the CFA feels when they are in the middle of a fire and they have no communications.

“There are alternative sites, but the idea is to get a win-win situation for our community in Gisborne South. We want a tower. It’s an important issue.” Cr Mark Ridgeway called for a new report to express the council’s desire to see the tower come to fruition but also its concern that Mount Gisborne was not the best site for it. “We would like to know for sure all other avenues have been explored and eliminated,” he said. “Telecommunications is an important issue right across our area.”

Road safety works set to begin

The Bulla Hill Railway team Graeme Precious, Kris Siderov, Brian Parkinson and Allen Williams.

Work is under way to improve safety at Beauchamp Street in Kyneton. More than $627,000 has been allocated to Macedon Ranges council as part of the federal government’s Roads to Recovery Program, to resurface the road and improve gutters and footpaths. The works are taking place from Mollison Street to about 150 metres past Victoria Street. Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters said the “busy” road served as direct access to the Calder Freeway. “I’ve spoken to a number of locals who have raised the safety of his road as a key issue in the area,” she said. “I have seen parents struggle with prams, cyclists navigate traffic and cars and trucks backed up in busy times. “The road is used by heavy duty vehicles because of the industrial area beside it and the direct access to the Calder Freeway.” The Roads to Recovery Program has provided almost $9.2 million in road upgrades across the Macedon Ranges during the past 12 months. The projects are either complete or on track to begin soon but Ms Chesters said more funding needed to be provided to the ranges. “These works are important for improving safety as well as boosting economic and social outcomes in the region, but the current investment is not enough to upgrade all of the roads that need attention,” she said. “Road safety is one of the key issues that is raised with me by locals.”

Full steam ahead for tourist railway The miniature train had it’s first run day of the year last month. Mr Siderov said the railway was missed by the community. “We had a good run day in January and everyone was really good and helpful with signing in,” he said. “It was a really pleasant day to come back to everything. “We had people coming in at a steady rate, especially because it was the last few weeks before the schools holidays finished and people

wanted to get out. To ensure a COVIDSafe environment, passengers are required to sign in and to bring a mask. There are also limits on the number of people allowed on site. The Bulla Hill Railway operates on the third Sunday of each month. The next run day is on Sunday, February 21. Details: facebook.com/BullaHillRailway

The Bulla Hill Railway is back on track for 2021. The railway’s last run day was in March last year before the COVID-19 pandemic put a stop to public events. Railway committee member Kris Siderov said members couldn’t visit the railway during lockdown. “When we finally got given the all clear, we found weeds across the tracks … so we’ve been slowly cleaning up and trying to reduce the amount of weeding.”

Green boost for buses A fleet of electric buses which operate across Melbourne, including along routes in the north and west, are being fitted with technology to make them even more environmentallyfriendly. CDC Victoria’s Volvo hybrid (self-charging electric) buses will be fitted with Zone Management technology, which will allow the vehicles to achieve zero emissions in designated zones, where they will operate exclusively in electric drive mode. Operating in electric mode means a silent ride for commuters and less road noise for residents and other road users. Volvo’s Zone Management system will optimise the performance of CDC Victoria’s hybrid buses, meaning they do not have

to rely on the electricity grid or expensive infrastructure for charging. The Zone Management systems are being installed in the buses by workers at CMV Truck and Bus in Derrimut and Volgren in Dandenong. Nicholas Yap, chief executive of ComfortDelGro Australia, of which CDC Victoria is a subsidiary, said the Zone Management system would “greatly benefit the local community … for a cleaner, greener Australia”. Nine of the hybrid buses equipped with the Zone Management system have commenced operating on the streets of Melbourne. The remainder of the fleet will be fitted with the new system in two stages over the next four months.

CFA stalwart honoured

Gardens set to bloom

By Jessica Micallef Bullengarook’s Ian Hay has been recognised for more than four decades as a volunteer firefighter with the CFA. Ian was presented with the Australian Fire Service Medal last week as part of the Australia Day honours. “It’s a great honour to receive the award and be nominated by my peers,” Ian said. “It’s not something you aim for but I have been a firefighter for a long time.” Ian joined the Bullengarook CFA in 1975 before he made the move to the Gisborne CFA.

- Ian Hay

“The fire brigade was the centre of the community, it was local and you helped one another, that’s why I joined,” Ian said. “When I moved to the Gisborne CFA, it was to run urban competitions.” Ian said the CFA was “a lot different today than what it used to be”. “There is far more safety now, we have better equipment, our uniforms and our gear have also evolved. “There is a lot more paperwork and there are police checks involved to become a volunteer firefighter.” Ian has been involved in many major fire events, including the devastating 1983 Ash Wednesday fires, Black Saturday and the more recent Victoria/New South Wales fires of last summer. “Ash Wednesday was the one that scarred

most people, certainly around here,” Ian said. “It was a big fire in a big hurry and we were in its way … the conditions were so ripe for it to burn. “Things were just burning around you. All it was, was save yourself.” Ian is also a life member of the CFA and the Gisborne CFA and is the group officer for the

Mount Macedon Group. He said the comradery was what he enjoyed the most about being with the CFA. “You are put through hard times together and you work it out together,” he said. “Through the CFA, I can go most places in Victoria and know someone. We’re a big family.”

Macedon Ranges council has been awarded $180,000 to upgrade two botanic gardens in the region. The council has received a $130,000 grant to install an automatic recycled water irrigation system at the Gisborne Botanic Gardens to help deliver more sustainable use of water within the gardens. The grant will also finance expansion of the garden’s living collection to include indigenous and exotic plants. A grant of $50,000 has also been awarded to upgrade the manual irrigation system to an automatic system at the Malmsbury Botanic Garden. The upgrade will provide a more effective water supply for the garden’s trees and plant collections, maintain and improve plant health and assist in future-proofing the garden. The grants form part of the state government’s $2.4 million second round of the Growing Victoria’s Botanic Gardens Grants Program. Most of the gardens funded through the program are in rural or regional Victoria and contribute to the local tourism industry. Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the funding will help to ensure the state’s botanic gardens are properly maintained and continue to be a treasured part of the state. “Victoria is the garden state and this funding will help us continue to enjoy that reputation,” she said. Train change ‘unfair’ on students By Jessica Micallef A Riddells Creek mum claims the new V/Line timetable on the Bendigo train line has a lack of suitable times and is unfair for regional students travelling into Sunbury. Leeanne Barrett’s year 11 son is a student at Salesian College Sunbury. She said her son used to take the 7.22am train from Riddells Creek to arrive in Sunbury at 8am. She said V/Line’s new timetable across the network, which came into effect on January 31,

does not have a train departing Riddells Creek at an “appropriate” time for her son to arrive in Sunbury in time for school. “There are now four trains that leave in the morning and only two of them stop at Sunbury but it gets in at 7.10am which is too early or 8.32am which is too late … so we are stuck on how to get to school,” Ms Barrett said. “I am not going to have my son wait around Sunbury for an hour and a half so he’ll have to get in late which the school isn’t going to be happy with.”

Ms Barrett said the times have also changed for afternoon trains. She said her son used to catch the 3.51pm train but will now have to leave school 15 minutes early to take a 3.37pm train or “wait around town” until the 4.36pm train. “If kids aren’t getting home for 45 minutes to an hour later, how is that going to work with part-time jobs?” she said. “Put the train times back the way it was, or stop more trains at Sunbury.” A spokesperson said the Department of

Transport will work closely with passengers affected by the timetable changes. “This new timetable will deliver extra services for passengers right along the Bendigo line, with better access to trains through Malmsbury, Macedon, Riddells Creek and Clarkefield,” the spokesperson said. The Department of Transport has encouraged regional students to take a VLine service that stops at Watergardens station at 7.39am or 7.59am to connect with a Metro service back to Sunbury.

Fire sparks call to arms By Tara Murray Two western suburbs advocates are calling for government action after a waste management fire in Brooklyn last week. There have been at least eight factory, waste management or tip fires across the west and Hume since October, while the Kealba landfill has had underground fires burning continuously for more than a year. Former LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley and former state MLC member Colleen Hartland say enough is enough.

“It’s a long-running issue,” Mr Rowley said. “It doesn’t matter which party has been in power at the time, they haven’t done enough clean-up of the west. “The urgency to clean it [industry] up has never been greater.” Mr Rowley said during his time with LeadWest, from 2010-18, one of the biggest concerns raised by local councils was the need for a cleaner, greener and more liveable western metropolitan area. “We were constantly talking about it with the other tiers of government, about the investment

needed in the west to make it cleaner and greener. It just seems that it is taking a long time to get there.” Mr Rowley said an Environment Protection Act, which changes how the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) regulates pollution, waste and contamination in Victoria, had been delayed for 12 months. “We’ve been waiting for so long to have confidence to be able to breath fresh air. Confidence that our creeks aren’t going to be polluted.” Ms Hartland is a member of the Facebook

group Anti-Toxic Waste Alliance, which was set up after the West Footscray warehouse fire which spewed toxic fumes across the western suburbs for days in August 2018. She said the group wants action. “There’s been a spate of these fires,” she said. “There’s been three in the last 10 days. “The EPA and the state government don’t seem to be taking it seriously.” Ms Hartland said the group wanted more regulation on industrial sites, clear information about when the EPA is called in and when and for how long air quality equipment is set up.

Myth-busting seminar An online seminar for people living with Parkinson’s aims to dispel some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding the disease. Brooklyn’s Pam West, who founded the ParKanDo peer support group for people living with Parkinson’s in Melbourne’s west, said the disease didn’t define people. “The focus for us is about busting perceptions and myths around capacity of people with Parkinson’s to engage and contribute within the community,” she said. “People seem to view someone with shakes or someone whose speech is impacted by the condition as not having the capacity to do things. “We’ve had members refused service in hotels because they had the shakes. We’ve had people who are with a carer [and] the conversation is directed at the carer instead of the individual.” The seminar will include a speaker from

Parkinson’s Victoria and people with lived experience of the disease sharing their personal perspectives. Ms West’s professional life included the roles of business development and project management before she used her skills to establish the support group. In the year since it was launched, ParKanDo’s membership has doubled to more than 60 people from all walks of life. The youngest member is 40 and the oldest is 87. Ms West said last year’s COVID-19 lockdowns had pushed many of the group’s events online, which had led to a growth in membership from across Australia. The free e-seminar will be held via Zoom on Tuesday, February 9, from 5-6pm. Register for the event via https://bit. ly/2K6TOr0. Details events@parkinsons-vic.org.au or call 1800 644 189.

Volunteer groups embrace solar By Jessica Micallef Volunteer committees in Lancefield and Riddells Creek have received a solar power boost. Volunteer community groups at the Lancefield Mechanics Institute, Lancefield Recreation Reserve and Riddells Creek Mechanics Institute can install solar PV systems as part of the state government’s Solar on Public Buildings Program. More than 220 volunteer committees will be supported

through round one of the $9.2 million initiative that was announced in May last year. The program will provide local jobs with accredited regional contractors to be appointed from a panel of approved providers. Lancefield Mechanics Institute committee of management president John Sevenson said he was looking forward to having solar panels installed at the institute. “The committee is very excited about this success and is so grateful to all those who helped put together our application, especially

the Renewable Energy Action Group team, part of the Macedon Ranges Sustainable Group,” he said. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said there had been a high level of interest in the program from eligible committees in the Macedon Ranges. She said successful committees were selected through a robust assessment process following an initial expression of interest. “This is a terrific outcome for the community, the environment and our hard-working volunteer committees at Lancefield Mechanics

Institute, Lancefield Park and Riddells Creek Mechanics Institute,” she said. “Local committees of management on public land are the backbone of small communities, which often have limited capacity to raise funds for their venues. This initiative is not only helping these committees to survive, but to thrive in the future.” The first round of projects will enable work at selected sites to get underway, starting with an energy audit and electrical upgrades if necessary ahead of the solar installation.

Supermarket for sale Coles Woodend has been put on the property market. The newly-developed supermarket, which opened it’s doors to customers in late 2018, has been labelled a “prime supermarket investment” as Coles Group aims to sell the site. The 3780 square metre supermarket includes a Liquorland, more than 180 car parking spaces and a new 10-year net lease to Coles Supermarkets Australia. Real estate agency Stonebridge Property Group has been appointed to sell the supermarket, which was put up for sale last Thursday. Director Kevin Tong said it was very common for Coles to sell its supermarkets to investors. “It’s a very good investment opportunity,” he said. “Only a handful of supermarkets come on the market and any time they do, investors take every chance because they are a safe investment. “The investor appetite for supermarkets

is growing consistently and we think Coles Woodend will be an extremely attractive opportunity for savvy investors seeking highly secure income with growth potential.” The property will be sold via an expression of interest campaign that closes on March 3. Stonebridge Property Group partner Justin Dowers said Coles had picked the perfect time to offer the “trophy asset” to the market. “Coles Woodend ticks all the boxes, it’s a blue-chip supermarket achieving strong sales growth, a modern building with depreciation benefits, a long 10-year lease and a prime position opposite Woodend train station,” he said. “Coles Woodend is dominant in its trade area serving … over 30,000 people and forecast to grow strongly. The reserve includes the keeper’s residence built in 1897, underkeeper’s quarters from 1915, 16.5 hectares of salt marsh and sand dunes, remnants from the magazine, an explosive testing shelter and tramway lines used to transport explosives. Truganina Explosives Reserve Preservation Society treasurer, Ralph Coghill, said the group began restoring the keeper’s quarters more than five years ago. “We’ve now commenced restoring the underkeeper’s, and during all of that time we’ve also been maintaining and improving the heritage ornamental gardens,” he said. “We’ve also established a demonstration vegetable garden.” The site has a new boardwalk winding around a water-storage tank, built in case of fires, and former laboratory buildings. “This place was used for the storage and distribution of explosives for civilian use, so things like dynamite and gelignite,” Mr Coghill said. “Explosives were taken out of here on the trams and there was a pier that went straight out into the bay – it was 100 metres longer than the existing Altona pier. “The fence is a very important part of the heritage of this place. “During the First World War and the Second World War, the military did commandeer the place and the fence along Queen Street was painted in camouflage paint.” Hobsons Bay council’s conservation team leader Frank Fardell said his vision was to return the site to a sheoak forest, providing a habitat for diverse species of animals. “I think what people would find surprising is, there’s five species of micro-bats that have been recorded within the reserve,” he said. “These are small bats that would fit in the size of your palm and they feed on mosquitoes and moths and beetles. “They don’t necessarily all live in caves … a lot of them live in fissures of bark.” The site also attracts the rare Altona skipper butterfly and leads to the Cheetham Wetlands, which is internationally recognised under the Ramsar environmental treaty and is home to more than 200 bird species. Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre is hosting events for World Wetlands Day, on Saturday, February 6, from 11am-3pm. For details, visit the Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre page on Facebook. The reserve, at 274 Queen Street, Altona, will be open on the first Sunday of each month for guided tours from 1-4pm, starting Sunday, February 7.

Liz Ellis snapped these photos of the Werribee River at Riverbend Historical Park.

St Thomas Anglican Church Werribee held its first flag raising ceremony on its newly refurbished flagpole on Australia Day. The commemoration started with the acknowledgement of the traditional custodians and then all present sung the first verse of the national anthem, as a squad from the Werribee Half Battery raised the flag. MC Ron Bubeck reflected on Australia’s multicultural community. This was followed by a cooked breakfast and an Australia Day quiz in the church hall. Sherene Magana-Cruz, a COVID-19 survivor, reflected upon how lucky we are to live in this great country and its first class medical system with its dedicated health workers. It was the first opportunity church members have had to gather as a group to join in a meal and socialise since the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

13 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 2 February, 2021

“New home sales reached remarkable heights in December, nearly doubling compared to the number of sales recorded in November,” reports HIA’s economist Angela Lillicrap. The HIA New Home Sales report – a monthly survey of the largest volume home builders in the five largest states – is a leading indicator of future detached home construction. “This is the second strongest month of new home sales in the 20-year history of the survey, only exceeded by March 2001,” adds Ms Lillicrap. “This surge in sales can be attributed to HomeBuilder as households finalised contracts to build a new home before the December 31, 2020 deadline to access the $25,000 grant. “The extension of the timeframe to commence building from three months to six, which was announced in November, played a significant role in December’s results. “New home sales in 2020 increased by 32.5 per cent compared to 2019. This is an exceptional result, given the nature of the pandemic and the effect that it has had on the broader economy. “It is not expected that this remarkable volume of sales will continue into January. The extension of HomeBuilder to allow contracts to be signed before March 2021 with a grant of $15,000 will support the sales of new homes into 2021, but not at this elevated level. “Low interest rates, improved lending assessment and growth in the price of established homes will also support demand for new homes in 2021. “The monthly increase in sales has been broad-based across the states with

the exception of Western Australia which declined by 9.5 per cent. “Western Australia has been the strongest performing state since the announcement of HomeBuilder and the state government’s Build Bonus grant in June. Despite the underperformance relative to other jurisdictions, the December

results are still elevated compared to previous years, with sales in the December 2020 quarter double the same time last year. “The strength of New Home Sales is a positive sign that home building will support jobs on the ground throughout 2021,” concludes Ms Lillicrap.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

Across the country, new home sales in the December quarter were higher in all regions when compared with the same period in 2019: South Australia (188.3 per cent), Victoria (103.1 per cent), Queensland (99.9 per cent), Western Australia (99.2 per cent), and New South Wales (61.7 per cent).

It has real RWD handling, excellent throttle control and steering that talks to you. It’s just perfect for early morning Sunday drives on your favourite bits of road. The Subaru is offered with a six-speed manual or an auto with the same number of forward ratios. The auto is a good one – but simply not in the class of a ‘real’ gearbox. The engine features Subaru’s trademark four-cylinder boxer layout and has a capacity of 2.0 litres. It puts out a neat 200 horsepower (147 kW) in its original format. Engine power is nothing to get excited about and even when revved to the heavens you don’t get a huge amount of hard acceleration. This is fine with us, we enjoy the skill of getting the best from a car by having it in the right gear from moment to moment. The BRZ first went on sale Down Under in July 2012. Anticipating a huge demand Subaru Australia made the interesting move of selling it only on the internet. It took just over three hours for a complete sellout of the initial shipment. After that initial burst of sales the BRZ eventually went on sale in dealerships. New car prices were lowered over the years as the ‘newkid-on-the-block’ excitement faded and sales dropped to more normal levels. The front seats are low and may prove awkward for some to get down into. But once you’re in there they’re firm, but comfortable, with good leg and headroom. Though the BRZ has four seats rear legroom is very cramped, indeed it’s non-existent when the front seats are all the way back. Boot space is reasonable although Subaru Australia opted for a full-size spare wheel,

which takes up a huge amount of space. If ever a car needed a space saver wheel it’s the BRZ. A BRZ S pack by Subaru Tecnica International (STI) was offered from mid 2013. It features lowered suspension; a body kit consisting of a front spoiler, rear diffuser and spoiler, and side skirts. It rides on 17-inch black alloy wheels. Inside there’s a Duracon gear knob on manual boxes. The engine gains a push-button start with the large button done in brilliant red. Subaru BRZ S pack was only available to new-car buyers, it could not be retrofitted. So it may become a sought-after model in years to come and even go up in price. No promises, though. Late in 2016 BRZ received minor design tweaks, another six horsepower and revised suspension tuning. Exterior changes included LED headlights and taillights, a wider and lower bumper design and new-design 17-inch alloy wheels. Inside there’s optional red stitching and

BRZ embossing on the front seats, modified instruments and a new steering wheel. Incidentally, Toyota also makes a version of the Subaru BRZ, called the 86. It’s built in the Subaru factory and has a Subaru engine, albeit with some Toyota fuel injection components and a different tune.

The engine should start easily and idle smoothly. If it doesn’t, get a dealer to check it as there were timing and injection problems in some earlier BRZs. The clutch should take up smoothly, if it doesn’t it might be near the end of its life.

How much? What to look for Check for a full service record, ideally from a Subaru dealer. Has the BRZ been thrashed, either legally at track days or illegally in street racing? A roll-cage is a clue, as are signs of one having been removed. Extra instruments may be for show, or intended to keep track of constant hard work during races. Unevenly worn tyres are a giveaway, as are damaged rims. Lowered suspension is easy to spot.

Expect to pay from $8000 to $12,000 for a 2012 Subaru BRZ; $13,000 to $19,000 for a 2014 BRZ; $15,000 to $22,000 for a 2014 BRZ S; $17,000 to $24,000 for a 2015 Premium; $18,000 to $25,000 for a 2018 BRZ; $19,000 to $25,000 for a 2016 SE; $22,000 to $30,000 for a 2018 tS; and $25,000 to $33,000 for a 2019 tS.

Car buying tip If you come across owners of cars like the BRZ perhaps have a chat to them. This is the sort of machine that appeals to enthusiasts and they’re happy to share stories.

17 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 2 February, 2021

SPORT STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Have an active Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day can conjure up romantic images of chocolates, Champagne and candlelit dinners. If this is your usual MO for the day to celebrate love, then why not try something different this year and have an active Valentine’s Day? There are many ways you can enjoy an active day with those you love, and organising a walk with a picnic could be one of the most simple! There are so many amazing short walks around Melbourne (see www.victoriawalks. org.au/Best_Melbourne_Walks/ for some inspiration). Pack your own picnic lunch, or use a pre-made picnic hamper service to keep it even easier and fuss free. Be sure to check the weather conditions before you head out, and if you do choose to venture into the bush, then check out www.parks.vic.gov.au for any changes in conditions. If walking is not really your thing, then why not relive your youth and go roller skating? There are still rinks around Melbourne – just be sure to check if you have to book ahead and bring your own skates or blades due to current COVID-19 restrictions. Even just half an hour of blading or skating will have you feeling invigorated, and give you that burn in your legs! Another great indoor activity for an active Valentine’s Day is rock climbing. Rock climbing will have you challenging yourself physically and relying on clear communication with your

partner as you ascend and descend the walls. If heights are not your thing, then why not try a game for partners, such as tennis or squash? Most tennis and squash clubs will allow public hire of courts. Another game to play with your partner could be lawn bowls, or bare foot bowling. Again, most clubs will allow for public hire of greens and you may or may not have to supply your own bowls. This is a lower impact game than tennis – and you could check out whether or not the bar really does have 1975 prices.

Or maybe water activities are more your scene – imagine going for a paddle boat ride on a light-dappled lake, or rowing a boat along a glass smooth river? Or how about a surfing lesson or even just a body board at your local beach (again, be sure to check conditions). If you’d prefer to keep your feet dry, but moving, a dance class might be more in your lane. Learning a few new dance moves and steps is great exercise for the body and mind, and will give you much-needed time with your partner.

And you’ll have a new skill to share together! The truth of it is, there are many active ways to enjoy time with those you love. We have so many amazing outdoor spaces around us, and some pretty great indoor activities too. Being active together can help deepen your connections with others, from the shared experience to the exhilaration of physical activity. You’ll make many new memories, and may even have something to look back on to laugh at over the years!

SPORT Ready for Big V return

Blake Henderson. (Shawn Smits)

By Tara Murray There’s plenty of excitement at the Altona Basketball Association as the Gators field a Big V women’s side for the first time since 2017. Having focused on the youth league women’s side in more recent times, the club now has the players to reform a women’s side. New coach Cameron Wilkosz said after some hard work behind the scenes, they were set to go. Wilkosz’s basketball journey is a well travelled one, with a role as lead assistant coach for the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Alberta Canada, WNBL Bendigo Spirit Academy head coach and head coach of the Bendigo Braves Victorian Youth Championship Women. “They had a few rough seasons and decided to focus on the kids,” he said of Altona. “There’s a lot of talent coming through the club. “It’s a credit to the club and who they are.

Now there’s kids travelling the world and playing at college.” Wilkosz said his experiences coaching against the club’s youth league side made it a no-brainer to apply for the women’s role when it came up. He’s of the view that the players who are stepping up into the women’s side are more than ready. “Randy Shanklin [coaching director and youth league women’s coach is an amazing coach and the opposing coach I was most close with,” he said. “Altona is a really good club. Altona just doesn’t put on the best spread after the game, they are a friendly club. “The kids are looking for feedback from opposition coaches. You didn’t get that at Bendigo. “I wanted to be a part of that.” Wilkosz said he had a certain way of coaching and the playing group was starting to adjust to his ways. He had been impressed by the team.

City signs key players Hume City has announced two key signings and a re-signing as it aims to remain at the top of the National Premier League ladder. Undefeated in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19, City has again put together a strong squad. Last week it announced the signings of Jordan Maricic and Aden Gardner. Maricic, a former Adelaide United youth product who joins from Adelaide City, will partner Hayden Tennant in Hume’s defensive line-up. Gardner joins Hume from fellow NPL side Bentleigh Greens. He spent part of 2020 playing with the Brisbane Strikers while there was no soccer being played in Melbourne for much of last year. The midfielder brings a wealth of experience and has a keen eye for goal. The club also announced the re-signing of Theo Markelis. A fan favourite, Markelis has found the back of the net on plenty of occasions for Hume. The signings will help fill the gap of five players departing in the off season. Captain Harry Monaghan is the biggest name to depart, along with Paul Wilson, Gideon Sweet, Will Hendon and James Kapuranovski. Coach Nick Hegarty stated on the club’s Facebook page that everybody was trying to get back to where they were this season. He said this year was a new season, the league had changed and they had to look forward. The club is in the middle of its pre-season, having played a number of games including one against Melbourne Victory.

“After watching training, they’re not a team that will just float around.” Wilkosz said they would have a ‘one club’ mentality, with players from the youth league squad to be part of the senior side every week. “The idea is to use it as a stepping stone.“ Wilkosz said that not only were they excited by the two Big V teams but there was more talent coming through. He was expecting big things of the players coming through and they could see more players joining the college system. Wilkosz said the first aim this year for the women’s side was to get the side back up and develop a solid foundation. “We want to be more than competitive. Win, lose or draw it’s about being the toughest team on the court.” The Gators play their first practice match this weekend and are keen to get crowds back after COVID-19 forced the cancellation of Big V last year. The club is also looking for sponsors, for the team and players.

Kangaroos add experience The Sunbury Kangaroos has added some experience to its squad ahead of the Essendon District Football League division 1 season. Kangaroos coach Leigh Sporle said the club lost a number of its 2019 division 2 premiership players. “We have a pretty young list,” he said. “These guys we have gotten in for this season are proven players. “We have a good mix, but we still want to focus on the youth.” The Kangaroos have announced six new signings in the past couple of weeks. Ferras Merhi, Saad Saad and Sammy Saad are no strangers to the EDFL. Merhi has been a dominant ruckman for a number of teams, having won a premiership at Roxburgh Park and Hadfield. He will take the pressure off premiership ruckman Brenton Sutherland. Saad Saad is a well-known goalkicker, having kicked more than 900 goals in 10 seasons playing with Seymour. He has previously played in the EDFL. Sporle said in hisplast season, Saad kicked plenty of goals despite playing more in the midfield. Sammy Saad is also a premiership player at Hadfield and Roxburgh Park and will add something up forward. All three have previously played together. This week, the Kangaroos announced the signings of Nathan Davidson and Blake Henderson. Henderson has played with both Romsey and Melton Centrals in the Riddell District Football League. He can play back, forward or in the ruck, adding some flexibility to the side. Davidson will add another key target up forward. He has been playing in BlackRoad in recent seasons but is known to many Sunbury locals having played for Romsey previously. Another former RDFL player, Mark Freeth, who was set to join the Kangaroos for the 2020 season, has committed for 2021. Freeth was a key player for Diggers Rest for a number of years. Sporle said the club was still in talks with a couple of other players but had nearly completed its recruiting. This will be the Kangaroos’ first season in division 1 after last season was cancelled due to COVID-19. The group started training last week. Meanwhile, the Kangaroos are after women’s and under-18.5s players for this season. Contact Allan Walters: 0400 408 019. Tara Murray
