Twins Colby and Sebastian, and Rania and Dania, were among the excited pupils starting school at Furlong Park School for Deaf Children last week. The school reopened for 2021 on Thursday and there was plenty of fun for the two sets of twins and their school friends. Colby and Sebastian, 8, and Rania and Dania, 6, are two of three sets of twins at the school this year. The school has about 65 students. A third set of twins will start on February 11 and will be part of the school’s early years program. Fire sparks call to arms Two western suburbs advocates are calling for government action after a waste management fire in Brooklyn last week. There have been at least eight factory, waste management or tip fires across the west and Hume since October, while the Kealba landfill has had underground fires burning continuously for more than a year. Former LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley and former state MLC member Colleen Hartland say enough is enough. “It’s a long-running issue,” Mr Rowley said. “It doesn’t matter which party has been in power at the time, they haven’t done enough clean-up of the west.

“The urgency to clean it [industry] up has never been greater.” Mr Rowley said during his time with LeadWest, from 2010-18, one of the biggest concerns raised by local councils was the need for a cleaner, greener and more liveable western metropolitan area. “We were constantly talking about it with the other tiers of government, about the investment needed in the west to make it cleaner and greener. “It just seems that it is taking a long time to get there.” Mr Rowley said an Environment Protection Act, which changes how the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) regulates pollution, waste and contamination in Victoria, had been
delayed for 12 months. “We’ve been waiting for so long to have confidence to be able to breath fresh air. Confidence that our creeks aren’t going to be polluted.” He suggests forming a steering committee which would include the EPA, WorkSafe, MFB and council representatives to have a co-ordinated approach to industry clean-up. “I don’t think questions are being asked on Spring Street as often as they should.” He also proposed government funding to help bring old industrial estates up to the 21st century and the introduction of better air quality monitoring systems. Ms Hartland is a member of the Facebook group Anti-Toxic Waste Alliance, which was
set up after the West Footscray warehouse fire which spewed toxic fumes across the western suburbs for days in August 2018. She said the group, a non-political alliance of community groups, organisations and individuals, wants action. “There’s been a spate of these fires,” she said. “There’s been three in the last 10 days. “The EPA and the state government don’t seem to be taking it seriously.” Ms Hartland said the group wanted more regulation on industrial sites, clear information about when the EPA is called in and when and for how long air quality equipment is set up. In the headspace Youth Advisory Group, Otto has not only advocated for positive change to the LGBTQIA+ community, but also for children at school and those who identify as having disability, such as autism.

They are pivotal in helping tackle broader community issues, have advocated on behalf of the community, acted as role models, and over the years have fostered 87 children.

Fire under investigation By Tara Murray A fire at a recycling centre in Brooklyn, which blew smoke across the western suburbs last week, is under investigation. Residents of 17 suburbs were forced indoors last Monday amid concerns about smoke from the fire at the Cleanaway Brooklyn Resource Recovery Centre in Old Geelong Road. An advice message was issued for residents in Altona, Altona Meadows, Altona North, Brooklyn, Laverton North, Seaholme, Williamstown, Williamstown North, Altona Gate, Laverton, Altona East, Seabrook, Newport, South Kingsville, Tottenham, Point Cook and Sunshine West, urging them to close their windows and doors and turn off their air conditioning. Fire Rescue Victoria crews were called to the fire at 174 Old Geelong Road about 5.40am. Crews arrived to find a pile of non-hazardous building waste well alight. The fire was brought under control at 6.20am but the smoke surrounded nearby suburbs forseveral hours. At the height of the fire, there were 65 FRV firefighters and more than 11 firefighting appliances on scene. Firefighters had some issues accessing water while fighting the fire. The site is a transfer station that backs onto a former landfill and takes all types of waste, e-waste, green waste and skip bins. It is not required to have an Environment Protection Authority (EPA) licence. A Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson said on Wednesday that the blaze was still under investigation. The EPA attended the site on the day of the fire to report on the localised smoke impacts. Cleanaway was contacted for comment.

Hit-run probe continues Police continue to investgate a hit and run accident in Deer Park on New Year’s Day that left an Ardeer man fighting for his life. Nick Topia, 55, was riding his motorcycle on January 1 when he was hit by a silver SUV performing a U-turn on Station Road, Deer Park. Mr Topia’s daughter, Tiffany, said he was dragged 100 metres down the road, causing extensive leg injuries. He has since had multiple surgeries and will lose one leg. His family has set up a Facebook page, Justice for Nick, to keep people up-to-date with his condition. The family confirmed on Wednesday that Mr Topia would lose his leg after surgery to try and save it failed. Police released images of the SUV, possibly a Ford Territory, which investigators believe may have had two female occupants at the time of the incident. The occupants of the car failed to stop after the collision and were last seen heading north on Station Road. Police are seeking assistance from anyone who saw the incident or who may know the occupants of the car. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000. Heavy rain keeps SES busy By Benjamin Millar and Tara Murray Heavy rain has caused havoc across the west as almost a month’s worth of rain dumped on the area last Friday. Part of Fitzgerald Road in Sunshine West was closed for several hours as a result of flooding. The Department of Transport said the northbound lanes between Swann Drive and the M80 Ring Road were closed about 1pm, with water across the road. Meanwhile, locals took to social media to
report flooding along Kororoit Creek behind Arthur Beachley Reserve. In Melton, State Emergency Service volunteers responded to 23 calls for help, working through until to midnight to deal with flooding and building damage. The SES received more than 500 calls from across the state in the 24-hour period. SES state commander Josh Gamble said more than 70 SES units had responded to calls on Thursday night and Friday morning, many of which were in Melbourne’s west. He said the majority of calls related to
building damage, leaking roofs and leaking walls, however the SES also received three calls for help from motorists who had driven through floodwater. Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Dean Narramore on Friday said that metropolitan Melbourne had recorded 40 millimetres of rain in four hours. “The month’s average for January is 47 mm so for many locations … we’ve had a month’s worth of rain in less than six to 12 hours,” he said. Myth-busting seminar An online seminar for people living with Parkinson’s aims to dispel some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding the disease. Brooklyn’s Pam West, who founded the ParKanDo peer support group for people living with Parkinson’s in Melbourne’s west, said the disease didn’t define people. “The focus for us is about busting perceptions and myths around capacity of people with Parkinson’s to engage and contribute within the community,” she said. “People seem to view someone with shakes or someone whose speech is impacted by the condition as not having the capacity to do things. “We’ve had members refused service in hotels because they had the shakes. We’ve had people who are with a carer [and] the conversation is directed at the carer instead of the individual.” The seminar will include a speaker from
Parkinson’s Victoria and people with lived experience of the disease sharing their personal perspectives. Ms West’s professional life included the roles of business development and project management before she used her skills to establish the support group. In the year since it was launched, ParKanDo’s membership has doubled to more than 60 people from all walks of life. The youngest member is 40 and the oldest is 87. Ms West said last year’s COVID-19 lockdowns had pushed many of the group’s events online, which had led to a growth in membership from across Australia. Car driven into house Specialist Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) operators were called to a Keilor Downs house on Thursday night following reports a car drove through a wall of the house. Eye witnesses reported a vehicle had travelled across a park adjacent to the Willy Avenue property, striking trees before crashing into the home causing the roofline to partially collapse. A resident who was home at the time was not injured. The building was assessed by a Brimbank council building surveyor. Vicpol, SES and Ambulance Victoria are also on scene.

Rubbish fire spreads Police are investigating a grassfire in Sunshine North on January 27. Fire Rescue Victoria was called to Bunnett Street after a caller to triple-0 reported heavy smoke in the area. Fire crews found two piles of rubbish on fire, which had spread to nearby grasslands. By Tara Murray Keilor Residents and Ratepayers Association fears residents will be forgotten when future operations of the Melbourne Airport are considered. The association has made a submission to the Melbourne Airport Environs Safeguarding Standing Advisory Committee, which was set up to advise the planning minister on improvements to the planning provisions safeguarding the airport. As reported by Star Weekly, airport operators Australia Pacific Airports (Melbourne) have lodged a submission asking the state government to give it more power to intervene in developments which could impact aircraft operations or lead to noise complaints. In its submission, the Keilor association urged the committee to consider the consequences any changes would have on residents and businesses surrounding the airport. Association president John Jennison, who will address the committee at a public hearing this week, said surrounding businesses are all affected by the airport’s operation. He said they all have “genuine concerns” that should be heard. The association’s submission outlines Keilor residents’ concerns and expectations of living near an airport. It states “living together becomes difficult and confrontational” when airport corporations expand capacity and more people move into residential growth areas around the
airport. “Keilor Residents & Ratepayers Association, who are long established neighbours on the south side of Melbourne Airport, are advocating for better protection of their environment, houses, investments, living standards, health and community,” the submission states, “A holistic approach to planning, control and management at all levels of government must be instigated … to ensure that the needs of residents like us in Keilor cannot be overridden.” The association has called for a cap on passenger numbers at the airport – not greater than 40 million passengers – and for a second international airport to be constructed once Melbourne’s population hits five million people. “Two major airports is an expected requirement for a major international city,” the submission states. It suggests aircraft flight paths for approaches and departures, where possible, should follow green wedges and industrial corridors and calls for noise abatement procedures to be reviewed and made more effective, including the reinstatement of an EMU (noise monitor) at Keilor. Monitor readings should also be made publicly available, the association said. Association spokeswoman Susan Jennison told Star Weekly that it was currently “near impossible” to lodge noise complaints. She said the airport’s record of complaints did not accurately reflect the number of complaints that had been raised.

Residents call for airport cap
Splishing and splashing Brimbank children have been eagerly hitting the pool since the COVID-19 lockdown ended. AQUA Schools in Keilor Park has reported a 127 per cent increase in the number of enrolments since reopening on November 9. The centre, which opened in 2018, was closed for nearly eight months due to COVID-19 but now has more than 500 children enrolled in

Top citizens recognised By Tara Murray Uncle Graham (Boots) Cooper and Aunty Joyce Cooper were stunned to be named joint winners of Brimbank council’s citizen of the year award. Following the council’s Australia Day ceremony, Uncle Graham said they were ‘gobsmacked’. The two local Aboriginal Elders were honoured for their work in helping tackle broader community issues, advocating on behalf of the community, acting as role models and having fostered more than 87 children. “We thought we were getting an OAM [medal of the Order of Australia],” Uncle Graham said. “This award, in my eyes, citizens of the year is a bit better than the OAM … because, it’s the community nominating you and looking at you as community-minded people. The OAM is the government in my eyes.” Aunty Joyce added, “It’s been a lot of hard work, worthwhile work and we will continue to fight and do what we need to do for our children and our people within the western suburbs. We thrive on it.” In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Uncle Graham and Aunty Joyce continued to work with various service providers across Brimbank to advocate for the needs of Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders. The council said both elders had been pivotal in helping tackle broader community issues such as health, education, unemployment, racism and oppression; making many people feel positive and connected with the community. We’ve set the programs up to show the non-Indigenous community who we are as First Nations people and we are going to continue to do that through our programs.” Otto Riddell was named the young citizen of the year for work inspiring and empowering youth across Brimbank through activities with the Crystal Queer program. Through the program, Otto has shared the journey as someone who identifies as being both
transgender and asexual, and has empowered, educated and advocated for the LGBTQIA+ community. Otto is part of the headspace Youth Advisory Group and has not only advocated for positive change to the LGBTQIA+ community, but also for children at school and those who identify as having disability, such as autism. Council chief executive Helen Morrissey said Otto’s non-judgemental attitude and openness inspires others, both young and older, to see things from a different perspective.
Brimbank welcomes new citizens More than 60 Brimbank residents marked Australia Day by becoming Australian citizens. The ceremony was the first in-person citizenship ceremony held in Brimbank since April, 2020 due to COVID-19. The council, which usually welcomes about 1500 new citizens each year, hosted a number of online ceremonies last year during the pandemic restrictions. Last week’s new citizens came from 22 countries including Vietnam, Malta, China and New Zealand. Mayor Ranka Rasic spoke about her own journey to Australia and becoming a citizen many years ago. She said it was a special day for the new citizens. “On Australia Day we welcome thousands of new members to the Australian family,” she said. “Becoming an Australian citizen is a major decision involving commitment, responsibility and public recognition. “We congratulate today’s citizenship candidates on making their decision to become Australian citizens.” According to the council, almost 45 per cent of Brimbank residents were born overseas.

Pokies loss hits $14.7m a month By Tara Murray Lockdown failed to dent the amount of money lost to gaming machines in Brimbank, new Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation data has revealed. In 2019-20, nearly $102 million was lost to gaming machines in Brimbank, despite venues being closed between April and June during the COVID-19 lockdown. In November alone, almost $6.7 million was lost on gaming machines in Brimbank – more than $700,000 more than the next highest municipality. In December, nearly $14.7 million was lost on pokies in Brimbank – the highest spent on pokies in the municipality in recent years and an increase of $2.7 million from December 2019. Brimbank’s pokie spend for December was more than $2 million more than Casey, which recorded the second highest losses for a second straight month. Alliance for Gambling Reform chief advocate Tim Costello said the increases were hugely concerning and showed how important it was for reduced poker machine operating hours. “Communities like Brimbank cannot sustain these kinds of losses,” Reverend Costello said. “These are stressed communities being exploited by the gambling industry at a time when local families and businesses are trying to recover from months of lockdown. “In November, when there were restrictions on poker machine operating hours and other limits, we saw a reduction in daily losses. That
was a real-time, real life experiment showing that gambling harm is reduced when opening hours are shortened. “It’s simply absurd that Victoria has the worst pokies opening hours in Australia at 20 hours a day.” In September, 13 councils including Brimbank wrote an open letter to Premier Daniel Andrews requesting poker machines be closed between midnight and 10am when restrictions eased.

They saved $20,000 for that renovation with pokies off, and lost it all almost as soon as those awful, addictive, predatory machines came back on,” Ms Bardsley said. “The amount lost in Brimbank says so much about how dangerous these machines are, and how much damage they do to our communities. Brimbank council has long sought state and federal government support for stronger gambling regulation and tougher enforcement of the state’s gambling code.

By Esther Lauaki Hundreds of empty seats have been a familiar scene at Village Cinemas Sunshine as the state grappled with a second wave of coronavirus. Now the industry fears for its future after being snubbed in last Monday’s state government announcements which lifted lockdown restrictions on retail and hospitality. Cinemas have been closed to patrons for months, and are likely to be closed for several more weeks. Village Entertainment chief executive Kirk Edwards said the latest government decisions have excluded the arts and entertainment sector and placed unnecessary pressure on the entire industry and its stood down employees, who are receiving little to no income.
He joined a chorus of calls for the government to provide information on when cinemas can reopen and requests for the same level of consideration given to other industries – such as restaurants, cafes, gyms and churches. “It was very disappointing to see that cinema and entertainment had been left behind by the Victorian government once again,” Mr Edwards said. “While we are delighted to see so many other industries beginning to reopen, we are simply seeking the same level of consideration that has been given to those industries. Cinema is such an important part of our community, and sharing stories is an integral part of how we connect with one another. “We believe we are in a strong position to be able to allow Victorians an opportunity to
reconnect and unwind in a safe environment – an experience that so many Victorians sorely need.” No confirmed COVID-19 cases in Australia have been linked to cinemas which, in other states, have been operational since late June and reopened in line with the hospitality and retail industry. Mr Edwards said that within the environment of a cinema, the risk of transmission is lessened by the large well-ventilated movie theatre auditoriums, where guests are facing one direction, wearing masks and not speaking. Cinema businesses, including Village Entertainment, have prepared stringent COVID-safe plans in order to keep staff and customers safe. Mr Edwards said that based on the research,
cinemas should be allowed to open alongside restaurants, gyms and churches from November 8. Village Entertainment operations chief Gino Munari said he was looking forward to seeing all cinemas re-open in the coming weeks. “The past few months have been very difficult for our staff, and the latest announcements have left many of us feeling very let down,” Mr Murani said. “The lack of clarity and consistent exclusion from reopening decisions has placed unnecessary stress on the thousands of young Australian part-time and casual workers that cinema employs. While we are incredibly grateful to be able to welcome back our Coburg Drive In team, we are dedicated to protecting the livelihood of all of all our staff.”

Family opens home, heart By Tara Murray Taylors Lakes couple Maria and Andre Rasquinha don’t see themselves as volunteers. For the past 20 years, the pair have been part of the Interchange Hosts program which involves families volunteering to look after children on a regular basis. Gateways Support Services’ Interchange Hosts buddy program carefully matches a child or young person with a disability, with an individual or host family. Mrs Rasquinha said the role is something that the family enjoys and for them it has never been a big thing.

“We haven’t thought much about it,” she said of volunteering for 20 years. “It’s not something that involves a lot of effort or time. “I could see the benefits to the family of the child but also enjoyed being able to give to the community and involve my own children in developing an understanding and acceptance of children with a disability.” Mrs Rasquinha said the children they have helped look after, and their families, have become part of their extended family. She said her two children had an extra playmate once a month while growing up. “We don’t think of our role as volunteers. We consider all the children we look after as part of our family,” Mrs Rasquinha said. The family has looked after many children over the years, including 18-year-old Andrew who has been coming to the family for 13 years.

Andrew’s mother, Joanne, said the Rasquinhas have become an extension of the family. Gateway Support Services Interchange Hosts volunteer co-ordinator Maggie Costa said the Rasquinha’s commitment, flexibility, love, passion and caring nature have enabled the

Two new parks for Brimbank Two new pocket parks to be built in Brimbank have received more than $1 million each in state government funding. The pocket parks, to be built in Cary Street, Sunshine North and Leslie Street, St Albans, will include community event areas, landscaping and greenery, improved pedestrian connections, seating, shade, play areas and drinking fountains. They are among 13 new spaces and five off-leash dog parks to be established across Melbourne with a $15 million government contribution announced last week. Pocket parks are created by repurposing unused land in built-up areas to create green space. Local councils were invited to nominate sites for the new parks as part of the Suburban Parks Program. A new dog park and a pocket park were both funded in Brimbank in the first round of funding. The dog park will be located at Kevin Flint Memorial Reserve. Feedback on the draft concept design closed late last month. A pocket park was approved for the corner of Glengala Road and Gum Street. The project will include the conversion of an existing traffic island, and a small portion of Gum Street road reserve into a pocket park. Police shut down auto shop By Tara Murray A St Albans man has been charged with a number of offences following an investigation into the handling of allegedly stolen vehicles at an automotive wrecking business in Sunshine North. Police executed a search at a Baldwin Avenue address on January 27 following information the business had allegedly been operating in contravention of the Second Hand Dealers Act. During the search, police located information to indicate a second holding yard nearby and a
search was conducted at this premises. Police said that multiple items were seized during the second search, including a 2000 Mercedes A190, a Ford AU Fairmont and a de-identified motorcycle. A 35-year-old St Albans man was charged with a range of offences, including handling stolen goods, possessing/negligently dealing with proceeds of crime, failing to keep accurate records, buying unidentified vehicles for scrap and failing to notify authority of change of address. He was bailed to appear at the Sunshine

More than 4700 women in St Albans who were eligible for a breast screen between 2017-19 did not take up the offer, according to latest figures. BreastScreen Victoria is hoping the opening of a new clinic on Hampshire Road, Sunshine will encourage more women to get their breasts checked. Eligible Victorians aged 50-74 can have a free mammogram every two years. Breast screening can find cancer the size of a grain of rice, and is the best way to detect breast cancer early when treatment is most likely to be successful. The participation rate for the program in the St Albans electorate is 52.8 per cent, just below the state average of 53.8 per cent. Family violence network expands By Tara Murray People seeking help with family violence will soon have greater access to support services close to home, with the Orange Door Network set to expand to Brimbank and Melton. The network helps Victorians impacted by family violence to get the help they need. The Brimbank and Melton site is one of four new sites recently announced, and is expected to open in 2023. Family Safety Victoria is currently
negotiating a site for the primary premises. Each Orange Door has a primary site which is complemented by additional access points and outposts, making it easier for people to get in-person support wherever they live. The network is currently operating in seven areas in Victoria. The Orange Door Network is part of the state government’s 10 year agenda to free Victoria from family violence. The local expansion of the Orange Door Network follows a $1.2 million state government investment in crisis accommodation and

Behind the iron fence One of the west’s historic gems, home to rare flora and fauna behind a corrugated iron fence, will this weekend open to the public for the first time in a year. Goya Dmytryshchak reports.
T
he Truganina Explosives Reserve at Altona reopens on Saturday for World Wetlands Day and on Sunday for guided tours. Once used to store explosives for civilian use such as mining and quarrying, the reserve operated from 1901-62 and is home to flourishing wildlife untouched for decades. The reserve includes the keeper’s residence built in 1897, underkeeper’s quarters from 1915, 16.5 hectares of salt marsh and sand dunes, remnants from the magazine, an explosive testing shelter and tramway lines used to transport explosives. Truganina Explosives Reserve Preservation Society treasurer, Ralph Coghill, said the group began restoring the keeper’s quarters more than five years ago. “We’ve now commenced restoring the underkeeper’s, and during all of that time we’ve also been maintaining and improving the heritage ornamental gardens,” he said. “We’ve also established a demonstration vegetable garden.” The site has a new boardwalk winding around a water-storage tank, built in case of fires, and former laboratory buildings. “This place was used for the storage and distribution of explosives for civilian use, so things like dynamite and gelignite,” Mr Coghill said. “Explosives were taken out of here on the trams and there was a pier that went straight out into the bay – it was 100 metres longer than the existing Altona pier. “The fence is a very important part of the heritage of this place. “During the First World War and the Second World War, the military did commandeer the place and the fence along Queen Street was painted in camouflage paint.” Hobsons Bay council’s conservation team leader Frank Fardell said his vision was to return the site to a sheoak forest, providing a habitat for diverse species of animals. “I think what people would find surprising is, there’s five species of micro-bats that have been recorded within the reserve,” he said. “These are small bats that would fit in the size of your palm and they feed on mosquitoes and moths and beetles. “They don’t necessarily all live in caves … a lot of them live in fissures of bark.” The site also attracts the rare Altona skipper butterfly and leads to the Cheetham Wetlands, which is internationally recognised under the Ramsar environmental treaty and is home to more than 200 bird species. Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre is hosting events for World Wetlands Day, on Saturday, February 6, from 11am-3pm. For details, visit the Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre page on Facebook. St Thomas Anglican Church Werribee held its first flag raising ceremony on its newly refurbished flagpole on Australia Day. The commemoration started with the acknowledgement of the traditional custodians and then all present sung the first verse of the national anthem, as a squad from the Werribee Half Battery raised the flag. MC Ron Bubeck reflected on Australia’s multicultural community. This was followed by a cooked breakfast and an Australia Day quiz in the church hall. Sherene Magana-Cruz, a COVID-19 survivor, reflected upon how lucky we are to live in this great country and its first class medical system with its dedicated health workers. It was the first opportunity church members have had to gather as a group to join in a meal and socialise since the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

“New home sales reached remarkable heights in December, nearly doubling compared to the number of sales recorded in November,” reports HIA’s economist Angela Lillicrap. The HIA New Home Sales report – a monthly survey of the largest volume home builders in the five largest states – is a leading indicator of future detached home construction. “This is the second strongest month of new home sales in the 20-year history of the survey, only exceeded by March 2001,” adds Ms Lillicrap. “This surge in sales can be attributed to HomeBuilder as households finalised contracts to build a new home before the December 31, 2020 deadline to access the $25,000 grant. “The extension of the timeframe to commence building from three months to six, which was announced in November, played a significant role in December’s results. “New home sales in 2020 increased by 32.5 per cent compared to 2019. This is an exceptional result, given the nature of the pandemic and the effect that it has had on the broader economy. “It is not expected that this remarkable volume of sales will continue into January. The extension of HomeBuilder to allow contracts to be signed before March 2021 with a grant of $15,000 will support the sales of new homes into 2021, but not at this elevated level. “Low interest rates, improved lending assessment and growth in the price of established homes will also support demand for new homes in 2021. “The monthly increase in sales has been broad-based across the states with

Have an active Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day can conjure up romantic images of chocolates, Champagne and candlelit dinners. If this is your usual MO for the day to celebrate love, then why not try something different this year and have an active Valentine’s Day? There are many ways you can enjoy an active day with those you love, and organising a walk with a picnic could be one of the most simple! If walking is not really your thing, then why not relive your youth and go roller skating? There are still rinks around Melbourne – just be sure to check if you have to book ahead and bring your own skates or blades due to current COVID-19 restrictions. Even just half an hour of blading or skating will have you feeling invigorated and give you that burn in your legs! Another great indoor activity for an active Valentine’s Day is rock climbing. Rock climbing will have you challenging yourself physically and relying on clear communication with your partner as you

ascend and descend the walls. If heights are not your thing, then why not try a game for partners, such as tennis or squash? Most tennis and squash clubs will allow public hire of courts. Another game to play with your partner could be lawn bowls, or bare foot bowling. Again, most clubs will allow for public hire of greens and you may or may not have to supply your own bowls. This is a lower impact game than tennis – and you could check out whether or not the bar really does have 1975 prices.
Or maybe water activities are more your scene – imagine going for a paddle boat ride on a light-dappled lake, or rowing a boat along a glass smooth river? Or how about a surfing lesson or even just a body board at your local beach (again, be sure to check conditions). By Tara Murray There’s plenty of excitement at the Altona Basketball Association as the Gators field a Big V women’s side for the first time since 2017. Having focused on the youth league women’s side in more recent times, the club now has the players to reform a women’s side. New coach Cameron Wilkosz said after some hard work behind the scenes, they were set to go. Wilkosz’s basketball journey is a well travelled one, with a role as lead assistant coach for the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Alberta Canada, WNBL Bendigo Spirit Academy head coach and head coach of the Bendigo Braves Victorian Youth Championship Women. “They had a few rough seasons and decided to focus on the kids,” he said of Altona. “There’s a lot of talent coming through the club. “It’s a credit to the club and who they are.
Now there’s kids travelling the world and playing at college.” Wilkosz said his experiences coaching against the club’s youth league side made it a no-brainer to apply for the women’s role when it came up. He’s of the view that the players who are stepping up into the women’s side are more than ready. “Randy Shanklin [coaching director and youth league women’s coach is an amazing coach and the opposing coach I was most close with,” he said. “Altona is a really good club. Altona just doesn’t put on the best spread after the game, they are a friendly club. “The kids are looking for feedback from opposition coaches. You didn’t get that at Bendigo. “I wanted to be a part of that.” Wilkosz said he had a certain way of coaching and the playing group was starting to adjust to his ways. He had been impressed by the team.
City signs key players Hume City has announced two key signings and a re-signing as it aims to remain at the top of the National Premier League ladder. Undefeated in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19, City has again put together a strong squad. Last week it announced the signings of Jordan Maricic and Aden Gardner. Maricic, a former Adelaide United youth product who joins from Adelaide City, will partner Hayden Tennant in Hume’s defensive line-up. Gardner joins Hume from fellow NPL side Bentleigh Greens. He spent part of 2020 playing with the Brisbane Strikers while there was no soccer being played in Melbourne for much of last year. The midfielder brings a wealth of experience and has a keen eye for goal. The club also announced the re-signing of Theo Markelis. A fan favourite, Markelis has found the back of the net on plenty of occasions for Hume. The signings will help fill the gap of five players departing in the off season. Captain Harry Monaghan is the biggest name to depart, along with Paul Wilson, Gideon Sweet, Will Hendon and James Kapuranovski. Coach Nick Hegarty stated on the club’s Facebook page that everybody was trying to get back to where they were this season. He said this year was a new season, the league had changed and they had to look forward. The club is in the middle of its pre-season, having played a number of games including one against Melbourne Victory.
“After watching training, they’re not a team that will just float around.” Wilkosz said they would have a ‘one club’ mentality, with players from the youth league squad to be part of the senior side every week. “The idea is to use it as a stepping stone.“ Wilkosz said that not only were they excited by the two Big V teams but there was more talent coming through. He was expecting big things of the players coming through and they could see more players joining the college system. Wilkosz said the first aim this year for the women’s side was to get the side back up and develop a solid foundation. “We want to be more than competitive. Win, lose or draw it’s about being the toughest team on the court.” The Gators play their first practice match this weekend and are keen to get crowds back after COVID-19 forced the cancellation of Big V last year. The club is also looking for sponsors, for the team and players.
Kangaroos add experience The Sunbury Kangaroos has added some experience to its squad ahead of the Essendon District Football League division 1 season. Kangaroos coach Leigh Sporle said the club lost a number of its 2019 division 2 premiership players. “We have a pretty young list,” he said. “These guys we have gotten in for this season are proven players. “We have a good mix, but we still want to focus on the youth.” The Kangaroos have announced six new signings in the past couple of weeks. Ferras Merhi, Saad Saad and Sammy Saad are no strangers to the EDFL. Merhi has been a dominant ruckman for a number of teams, having won a premiership at Roxburgh Park and Hadfield. He will take the pressure off premiership ruckman Brenton Sutherland. Saad Saad is a well-known goalkicker, having kicked more than 900 goals in 10 seasons playing with Seymour. He has previously played in the EDFL. Sporle said in hisplast season, Saad kicked plenty of goals despite playing more in the midfield. Sammy Saad is also a premiership player at Hadfield and Roxburgh Park and will add something up forward. All three have previously played together. This week, the Kangaroos announced the signings of Nathan Davidson and Blake Henderson. Henderson has played with both Romsey and Melton Centrals in the Riddell District Football League. He can play back, forward or in the ruck, adding some flexibility to the side. Davidson will add another key target up forward. He has been playing in BlackRoad in recent seasons but is known to many Sunbury locals having played for Romsey previously. Another former RDFL player, Mark Freeth, who was set to join the Kangaroos for the 2020 season, has committed for 2021. Freeth was a key player for Diggers Rest for a number of years. Sporle said the club was still in talks with a couple of other players but had nearly completed its recruiting. This will be the Kangaroos’ first season in division 1 after last season was cancelled due to COVID-19. The group started training last week.
