Young hero shines By Alesha Capone A Williams Landing boy has become the youngest-ever recipient of the Lalor Hero Awards. Eight-year-old Samarveer and his father Japinder Sandhu were last month recognised for their extensive volunteer work to help the community. The pair, who have been volunteering with the United Sikhs for about two years, helped prepare and deliver meals to people in need throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. And last year, Samarveer touched hearts when he visited Werribee Police station dressed in his police costume after four police

officers were struck and killed by a truck on the Eastern Freeway at Kew. Samarveer paid his respects at the station, asking the officers present if they could hold a minute of silence. Samarveer last week said he was “happy and emotional” to receive the Lalor Hero award. “How I got inspired is that I saw my dad work hard to help the community and I decided to work hard too,” he said.

Mr Sandhu said he started volunteering with the United Sikhs after meeting the organisation’s directors at a Sikh temple in Tarneit. The United Sikhs, a worldwide group, provided food and meals to people affected by the 2019-20 bushfires and the pandemic. Samarveer joined the group just after his sixth birthday, and is the youngest volunteer of all the group’s international members. During the bushfires, Mr Sandu collected donations of food and essentials to deliver from Melbourne to Bairnsdale. He also worked at the Bairnsdale Neighbourhood House and an Indian restaurant to organise a community meal for

250 residents affected by the fires. After seeing the impact of the bushfires, Mr Sandhu joined the CFA in Point Cook and is now a volunteer firefighter. Mr Sandhu said that be enjoyed helping others. “Once you’re involved you can’t go back – the love and support of people in the community is so much,” he said. Mr Sandhu and Samarveer also volunteer at the Wyndham Park Community Centre and Uniting Wyndham. Samarveer said he hopes to become a police officer when he grows up. The Lalor Hero Awards, presented by local MP Joanne Ryan, acknowledge residents and groups who “go above and beyond” within the Lalor electorate.

Honour for women’s champion By Alesha Capone Truganina resident Winitha Bonney says she feels “seen and heard” after receiving a medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in this year’s Australia Day honours. Ms Bonney was acknowledged for her service to women, dance and the community. She is the founder and chief executive of the not-for-profit Bounczn Dance Company; founder of #ColourFULL, Australia’s first leadership and entrepreneurship conference and awards night by women of colour,

for women of colour and their allies; and founded Amina of Zaria, a digital platform and community that empowers and educates women of colour to succeed. Ms Bonney said although the public has received an insight into the struggles faced by people of colour since the Black Lives Matter movement began last year, the work done by her community is often “pushed to the back of the pile” by organisations. “A lot of women and people of colour often get sidelined and sidetracked,” she said. The business coach and motivational speaker

said that 150 women attended the soft launch of her #ColourFULL event in 2019. “The thing I probably enjoy most is being in a space where I am no longer a minority, where the other women are no longer a minority, and seeing the joy on their faces too,” she said. Ms Bonney, whose heritage is Tamil-Sri Lankan, was born in London and raised in Australia. She said that during her own dance career, she noticed much of Australia’s dance scene is “Euro-centric” – something she worked to change while serving as acting chief executive of Ausdance Victoria in 2015.

We just fell in love with that name.” Wyndham’s Tegan Forder, a first-time mother to young Oliver who came into the world on June 24, said she and her husband did not find out the gender of their baby until he was born. “We had a few names for each gender and my husband suggested Oliver for the boy and I liked it, it was one of the only boy names we agreed on,” she said. Youngsters named Oliver and Charlotte are in good company. A report released by the market research firm McCrindle has revealed that Oliver was the most popular boys’ name of 2020, while Charlotte was the most popular girls’ name. During the year, 1609 Australian baby girls were named Charlotte and 2206 boys named Oliver. Olivia was the second-most popular name for girls in Australia, with 1575 babies given this name, followed by Amelia (1494), Isla (1397)

A police car was damaged when officers were called out to an illegal hoon event in Hoppers Crossing at the weekend. Police attended Industrial Avenue after receiving reports that 30 to 40 vehicles were doing burnouts, just after midnight on Saturday. It is believed the cars were travelling between Industrial Avenue, Richards Road, Horne Street and Dunlop Road, at the time. When police arrived on the scene, the crowd began to disperse. However, a male wearing a balaclava ran up to the police vehicle and kicked the driver’s side wing mirror, damaging it. Police were not injured during the incident. Police said the meeting broke up into smaller groups with one group headed toward Greens Road, Wyndham Vale and the other group travelling along Forsyth Road towards the CBD. Investigators are keen to speak with anyone who has dashcam or CCTV footage of the incident, specifically businesses in the Werribee area. Meanwhile, police charged three teenagers following a stabbing in Carlton at the weekend. Two teenagers, aged 15 and 16 years old, were arrested on Sunday after a warrant was executed at a Tarneit address. A third boy, aged 14, was arrested later that night. Service recognised The Committee for Wyndham has recognised Reclink Australia founder Peter Cullen for his efforts to connect vulnerable residents with sport, arts and employment. Mr Cullen has been named winner of the committee’s 2020 John Nicol Community Service Award, an annual prize given for exceptional community service in the municipality of Wyndham. The award recognises a Committee for Wyndham member, or an individual in a member organisation, who has substantially contributed to the improvement of the quality of life of people in Wyndham, beyond that expected in their usual occupation. Mr Cullen founded Reclink Australia, a registered charity, in 1990. The organisation, which is based in Wyndham, aims to enhance

the lives of people through sports participation, specialist recreation and arts programs and pathways to employment opportunities. Reclink works with people experiencing multiple forms of disadvantage including social isolation, physical and mental health issues, unemployment, family violence, drug and alcohol addiction, problem gambling and other forms of socio-economic disadvantage. Mr Cullen is also the brains behind the Sports Share program, which operates out of Werribee and distributes sports packs for people to do at home. New stadium a step closer By Alesha Capone

School journey begins Young Lilly will be among the thousands of children in Wyndham starting school within the next two weeks. Five year-old Lilly will begin her prep studies at Derrimut Heath Primary School in Hoppers Crossing, which is part of Baden Powell College, on February 4. Proud mum Emma said that on the first day of school, the entire family – including her younger daughter Aurelia, 2, and six month-old son Spencer – would visit Lilly’s grandparents’ house before embarking on a walk to the Derrimut Heath campus. Emma said that Lilly was feeling a little shy and nervous about her first day in class, but that she was very interested in the process of buying her uniform and school supplies. “She actually really enjoyed doing that,” Emma said. However, Lilly has voiced concerns that she might miss her family’s company. “She has said she will miss me,” Emma said. “She often also asks if school is one day on, one day off, like kindergarten is.”

The construction of a 15,000-seat stadium in Tarneit is a step closer, after the state government approved a key planning amendment. Planning Minister Richard Wynne signed off on an amendment to the Wyndham Planning Scheme which will allow detailed design of the stadium and development at 1160 Sayers Road to be finalised, it was announced on Friday. The stadium, known as Wyndham City Stadium, will be built in partnership with Wyndham council and The Western Melbourne Group. It will be home to A-League side Western United and include a commercial, residential and sports training precinct. The next step towards building the stadium will be for Mr Wynne to approve a concept master plan for the site, followed by final approval and implementation of detailed plans by Wyndham council. The stadium is predicted to kick in $147 million to Victoria’s economy through the construction phase and create 125 ongoing full-time jobs. Western Melbourne Group chairman Jason Sourasis said the state government’s amendment approval was “a huge milestone”. “The planning approval signals the official start to the project and means construction on the stadium can commence by mid-2021 and should be ready in time for the Women’s World Cup in 2023,” he said. “We could not have achieved this milestone without the amazing support from Kate Roffey and her team at Wyndham City Council, as well as our state government representatives, in particular, Sarah Connolly.” Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said large projects such as the stadium “are significant for a city like Wyndham”.

Suspicious fire Police are investigating a suspicious fire which occurred at a real estate agency in Wallace Avenue, Point Cook last Wednesday. Fire Rescue Victoria crews responded to the blaze, after a passerby reported it about 1.30am. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

By Alesha Capone Victims of a spate of tyre slashings in Manor Lakes and Wyndham Vale are urging the offender to consider the impact of their actions. Paul Palis noticed his two front tyres had been slashed while his vehicle was parked in Eureka Drive about 4.30pm on January 15. He said the tyres, both of which were flat, had cuts of about 20-25 millimetres in their treads. Mr Palis said that at the time he was tired from his workday, supporting people with disability, and wanted to spend the night with his children and make them dinner. Instead, he spent the evening “angry and stressed” while calling tow trucks and tyre shops. “These people don’t think how families are affected by their actions,” Mr Palis said. He has reported the slashed tyres to police. Another resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said the front tyres of his vehicle were slashed when it was parked outside his Field Street house. Neighbours informed him his that they tyres were flat about 9.30am on January 19. The man said his tyres had a “very subtle pattern” of puncture marks in multiple places. He is now facing a bill of least $1000 to replace the tyres, and is looking to install security cameras at his property. The man said he moved to Manor Lakes after his Werribee house was burgled. “My moving to Manor Lakes was part of wanting to move to a safer area, a nicer area, and this [the tyre slashings] has left me shaken,” he said. He has since signed a petition calling on the state government to build a police station in Wyndham Vale or Manor Lakes. Details: bit.ly/3mUDdoA

Driver fined A 22-year-old Epping man has been fined for traffic offences including using a mobile phone while driving, and failing to display P-Plates, after crashing into a barrier on the Princes Freeway at Little River last Wednesday. Police received reports that the driver was swerving between lanes before the incident, which occurred about 1.15am. After hitting the Princes Freeway barrier, the man allegedly continued driving before police intercepted him at the Point Wilson overpass.

On the lookout Police and Neighbourhood Watch volunteers fitted anti-theft screws to the number plates of 90 cars on January 16, at a Safe Pl8 Day. During the event, which was held at Pacific Werribee, police also spoke to more than 120 community members about crime prevention tips and advice.

House prices tipped to grow By Alesha Capone Median house prices in Manor Lakes, Werribee and Wyndham Vale are predicted to experience “strong growth” next year, according to a property market outlook report. The report, from property analytics company Higher than Average Growth (HtAG), was prepared for the developer Vestbuild last year. The report predicts the median house price

in Manor Lakes, which presently stands at $565,000, will grow by 4.95 per cent by the second quarter of 2022. Median house prices in both Wyndham Vale and Werribee are predicted to grow by 2.67 per cent in 2022. The report states that Werribee houses increased in value by 2.16 per cent to $579,472 last year, although Wyndham Vale houses fell in value by 1.12 per cent to $491,560. House prices in Tarneit are forecast to

increase by 0.29 per cent by 2022 on top of a 0.06 per cent toof $588,805. The report states its price predictions were based on historic sales data. AVID Property group general manager Peter Vlitas said that demand was growing for larger homes in areas such as Wyndham Vale. AVID Property is developing the Savana estate, which has 640 residential lots, near Wyndham Vale train station. “There’s market demand for larger homes

in Savana and with 86 per cent of homes being built falling into the four and five-bedroom category, we have definitely been seeing that in our community,” Mr Vlitas said. AVID Property Group expects the Savana community to grow more than 20 per cent in the next 12 months and become home to 1600 residents. “Demand for land has been so strong that we began construction on our next stage even before a release had taken place,” Mr Vlitas said.

Boatsheds hit the market A estate agent who is selling two Werribee South boatsheds says that interest is soaring in the properties due to COVID-19 affecting people’s travel plans. Reliance Real Estate Point Cook sales professional Donna Carson is selling the licenses to the boatsheds, which are located on Crown land at 405 Cunninghams Road and 158 Campbells Cove Road. The Cunninghams Road boatshed, located on Bailey’s Beach adjoining Campbells Cove, was constructed in the 1940s and has been in the same family for four decades. It has a private boat ramp and decking. Ms Carson said the boatshed has a “relaxed, vintage feel” and is very private, with total waterfront views. An auction to sell the boatshed’s license would be held at 11am on Saturday, January 30, unless sold prior. The owners are hoping for a sale price of between $125,000 to $138,000. Ms Carson said she showed eight groups

through the boatshed during an inspection last weekend, and inquiries were coming in daily. The boatshed at 158 Campbells Cove Road is newly renovated with an expanse of lawn in front before the water. It is being sold off-market. Ms Carson said both sheds were attracting interest from potential buyers across Melbourne and further afield. “When I ask people why they are interested in buying, they say it is about current travel restrictions and looking for their own little holiday, their own little escape,” she said. “Where else can you own a property on the waterfront for that price, in Melbourne?” Alesha Capone

Chasing a world record By Alesha Capone Point Cook’s Kiko Dos Santos is on a mission to beat the world record for doing the most muscle-ups in a row. Mr Dos Santos, a former fitness model who has competed in Australia, Italy, and Thailand, said he quit the sport when his best friend passed away in 2016. But after experiencing mental health issues which resulted in constantly feeling negative during the past few years, he re-discovered his love of fitness during the pandemic lockdown last year. Mr Dos Santos said his wife purchased exercise equipment to help them “keep sane” and work out at home. He also took up his old hobby of calisthenics, using fitness stations located within Point Cook parks. Beating the world record for muscle-ups – which are usually performed on a chin-up bar or gymnastics rings – didn’t cross his mind until he realised he could easily complete about 20 in a row, which is only six below the world record. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the highest number of consecutive muscle-ups reached is 26, which was achieved by Maksim Trukhonovets in Belarus in 2018. Mr Dos Santos said he believed he would need to undergo another seven to nine months of training before he could attempt to conquer the record. In the meantime, he has recently made a challenge via social media to keep himself motivated. “I challenge anyone one-on-one in person, if they manage to beat me I will give them $250 in cash, if they lose, they give $50 towards a mental health organisation of their choice.” Details: @KikoDosSantos on Instagram

Art prize increased The total prize pool for this year’s Wyndham Art Prize will be $24,500, with Wyndham council adding a new $5000 category to the competition. Now in its seventh year, the annual contemporary art prize attracts entries from across Australia and Wyndham. In 2021, prize money for the competition will include a $12,000 non-acquisitive prize, a $5000 acquisitive Local Emerging Art Prize and a $2500 People’s Choice Award, sponsored by Arts Assist. The council has introduced a new $5000 commission prize to this year’s competition, in a category titled TREAT – A Socially Engaged Art Prize. The winning artist will work within the Wyndham community and on a Deakin University research initiative, the Public Art Commission, to develop a project in partnership with the Wyndham Art Gallery for a series of place-based public art pieces in the west. The project will be curated by David Cross and Cameron Bishop of Deakin University. Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said the annual Art Prize strengthened the municipality’s reputation as a place where art is valued and central to residents’ experience. Flipping conventions Hoppers Crossing artist Leesa Gray-Pitt is set to hold her first solo exhibition next month. Works by Gray-Pitt will be displayed in The Seven (not so) Deadly Sins Exhibition at the BlackCat Gallery in Collingwood from February 17 to 28. Gray-Pitt said the exhibition was originally scheduled for May last year, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced her to re-schedule the event. The exhibition will feature 15 paintings by Gray-Pitt, including three as a triptych and two as a diptych. The artworks, which will be for sale, are named after the Seven Deadly sins - lust, greed, gluttony, sloth, pride, wrath and envy. Gray Pitt said she came up with the concept for the exhibition in 2018. “Just like there are two sides to a coin I

wanted to do that with these so-called Deadly Sins,” she said. “Flip them over and have a fresh look at why they were, or rather were not, in my opinion so deadly?” Gray-Pitt said she was “really looking forward to showing everyone what I’ve been working on over the past two years and getting their feedback”. “We all come with our own view of the world with our life experiences so seeing my art through the lens of my audience is always interesting and fresh.” Entry to the exhibition is free. Former patient gives thanks By Alesha Capone Anubhav Aggarwal has donated $1900 to Werribee Mercy Hospital, where he spent time as a patient during the thunderstorm asthma event about four years ago. Mr Aggarwal, also known as Anu, was placed on a ventilator for more than 10 hours when weather causing thunderstorm asthma hit Melbourne. The Point Cook man said he had no history of asthma, but attended his GP’s office when he began showing symptoms. The doctor

gave him Ventolin but when it didn’t work an ambulance was called to take him to hospital. Mr Aggarwal said that although the whole experience was “a bit shocking” for him, staff at Werribee Mercy Hospital took excellent care of him. He said he wanted to give back to the staff and wider community so has made a donation to the Werribee Hospital Foundation to go towards purchasing an EZIO Intraosseous Drill for Werribee Mercy’s special care nursery. The drill will be used for babies and newborns requiring cannulation insertion,

and to establish vascular access in critically-ill patients. Mr Aggarwal, has made the donation through his business, Find My Real Estate. “With 2020 being an unprecedented year, if there is any opportunity to where you can help to save lives, why not?” he said. He urged other Wyndham residents to support Werribee Mercy and the foundation as it aims to raise money to purchase an AccuVein for the paediatrics ward. Bell rings for new schools The construction of two new schools in Wyndham has been completed ahead of children starting classes for the year. Riverbend Primary School in Wyndham Vale and Garrang Wilam Primary School in Truganina are both ready for pupils to commence their first term. Riverbend Primary School has an administration building, outdoor play courts, sports field, a performing arts and physical education building. The school has been designed to allow attendance of a high number of students with a disability, with facilities including wider corridors, more spaces for consultation classrooms and a fitness room for therapeutic use. Lisa Conibeer has been appointed as the school’s first principal and enrolments are now open for pupils up to grade 6. “Our community is growing rapidly and

that is why we need to build new schools and upgrade existing schools,” Werribee MP Tim Pallas said. Garrang Wilam Primary School features an administration building, outdoor play courts, a sports field and a performing arts and physical education building. “This is a great school with the state-of-the-art facilities that will match the excellent teaching that will occur in the classrooms,” Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said. Natalie Nelson has been appointed as principal of the school, which will have the Truganina South East Integrated Family Centre built next door. The Park Werribee owner Nick Christou said the hotel received more than 500 calls in just two days last week after Premier Daniel Andrews announced that eateries could host sit-down meals again. Committee for Wyndham chief executive Barbara McLure said it was terrific to see people shopping and eating in Watton Street, Werribee last Thursday. “I think there is a sense that people have an understanding that local businesses did it really hard and it’s very important to support local businesses now,” she said. Renay Ahmed, from the Wyndham Cache café and deli and LT’s Egg Farm in Werribee South, said the café was encouraging customers to order grazing boxes and drinks to enjoy on the lawn. “The response has been phenomenal. As soon as the Premier’s announcement happened, the phones were ringing off the hook,” Ms Ahemd said. Pacific Werribee centre manager Patricia Gardiner said the shopping centre was pleased to welcome back traders which were closed during the pandemic. “The centre community is certainly beaming with positivity,” Ms Gardiner said. State manager for Cedar Woods, Lloyd Collins said it was encouraging to see the Williams Landing town centre reopen. He said Cedar Woods was working with tenants and council to expand the external dining area to help businesses get back on track. Wyndham council last week announced measures to help eateries extend their dining areas, by creating an additional 1938 square metres of outdoor dining space across the municipality. Wyndham city design and liveability director Ludo Campbell-Reid said the council was also planning the West End Experience, an outdoor dining area in Watton Street between Bridge Hotel and Wedge Street Piazza, as a series of one-day activations. In addition, three “parklets” will be installed in Hoppers Junction and outdoor dining precincts created in the Point Cook Town Centre and Soho Village.

Back in business Teenage boxing champion Marissa Williamson has been awarded a scholarship by the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame. The scholarship gives the 18-year-old $10,000 to put towards boxing costs, access to wellbeing programs and staff, and she will be mentored by Olympic gold medallist and professional beach volleyballer Kerri Pottharst. Williamson grew up in Wyndham and took up boxing when she was 16. She is the 64kg Victorian Boxing Champion, 64kg Australian Boxing Champion and is on the National Futures Team which aims to train athletes for the 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2024 Olympics. Williamson said the scholarship has been the highlight of a “tough year”. She left foster care earlier this year and was temporarily homeless before finding her own apartment. And she was all set to represent Australia at the World Youth Games in Poland last month, before it was postponed until next year due to COVID-19. Williamson said she usually trains six days a week. For the past few months she has been training at Crew Fitness and Performance in Braybrook, which was co-founded by five-time Australian boxing champion Jason Mallia. “What I have enjoyed [about boxing] is just the opportunity to travel and learn life skills, which I didn’t have the chance to do when I was younger,” she said. AFP Commander Todd Hunter said Australian authorities and their international partners remained committed to holding alleged offenders accountable for their role in horrific crimes against children. “If you are downloading and sharing child abuse material you are complicit in the sexual abuse of children and the lifelong harm it causes – it’s as simple as that,” he said. “But you are not anonymous and you will be caught.” Anyone with information about people involved in child abuse and exploitation is

urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. An online report can also be made to alert the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation, which in the past financial year received more than 21,000 notifications. Anyone impacted by child sexual abuse and online exploitation can access support services at www.accce.gov.au/support. Advice for parents and carers about protecting children online is available at ThinkUKnow, an AFP-led education program to prevent online child sexual exploitation: www.thinkuknow.org.au.

Plants protect wetlands A wetlands located within a Truganina estate will become home to more than 160,000 indigenous plants. Stockland has unveiled a plan to revitalise wetlands located on the corner of Clara Avenue and Kirkpatrick Boulevard in Mt Atkinson, where about 8000 residences are being built. The wetlands will act as a natural filter and treat storm water before it enters Skeleton Creek, which flows into Port Phillip Bay. The list of indigenous plants selected for the wetlands, which was developed in consultation with Melbourne Water and Melton council, have been selected specifically to attract native wildlife. Mature trees have also been retained around the wetlands, which provide a home to birds including wedge-tailed eagles. The new plantings will support other birds living in the western region, including 330 species such as the country’s smallest bird, the weebill and one of the largest, the brolga.

Stockland project director Ed Krushka said boosting the wetlands’ plant life would play a big part in future-proofing the local environment for generations to come. “We’ve worked closely with Melbourne Water and our local indigenous community to ensure that we are not only revitalising the area but we’re also playing a role in educating the local community about the heritage and importance of the area,” he said. Melbourne Water’s Ken O’Neill said the project would contribute to the organisation’s vision under the Healthy Waterways Strategy, to protect and improve waterways across the western region. A pathway and vantage points will be constructed in the wetlands, so Mt Atkinson residents can access the site. The wetlands will open to the public mid-year. Road safety plea as students return to school Wyndham council has called on the community to help keep children safe, as schools start reopening for the first term of the year. Mayor Adele Hegedich said it was important for families to feel that their children are protected as they make their way to and from school. “It’s important for all road users to remember to slow down around schools, especially at drop-off and pick-up times,” Cr Hegedich said. “There are reduced speed zones around schools

in place between 8am and 9.30am and in the afternoons 2.30-4pm. “To help keep our kids safe remember to slow down in school speed zones during school times, be extra cautious around schools and be aware that young children can be unpredictable and difficult to see.” Cr Hegedich said it was also vital to teach children how to cross supervised crossings, to stick to the footpath and be aware of their surroundings.

Wyndham’s community safety portfolio holder, Cr Susan McIntyre, encouraged parents to also be mindful of how they drop off and pick-up children from school. “Look for parking restriction signs and make sure to obey them,” she said. “Don’t forget to allow extra time if you are a parent or carer dropping kids off at school and remember that double parking, parking in a no-stopping zone, parking on nature strips, is illegal.”

Cr McIntyre said the council was offering grants of $5000 to primary schools within Wyndham to participate in the Active Travel To School program. “The program supports schools to reduce traffic congestion which will make it safer during drop-off and pick-up time while also increasing walking, riding and scooting to school,” Cr McIntyre said. Role call for free course By Goya Dmytryshchak A charity empowering and supporting women is seeking at least 15 students to commence a free aged care course at Victoria University’s Footscray campus. Women CAN Australia, a charity that links women to vocational training, is supporting women who are interested in obtaining their certificate III in individual support. Its Placement Circle program helps mature-aged students overcome barriers to finding meaningful jobs and financial independence. Case manager Indira Burekovic visited

Footscray to promote the program, which was piloted in Dandenong last year. “We need about 20 women to join the program so we have to spread our wings and really promote, so this is what we’re doing for the next two weeks,” she said. “We have a peer support group so we support them throughout the whole course.” Ms Burekovic said the Dandenong pilot had resulted in women who experienced disadvantage being supported to enter the workforce. “They needed someone to lift them daily because they came from family violence and stress and anxiety and depression,” she said. “I

was able to connect with them daily and just push them through and they’ve come so far … We’re hoping that these women from Footscray will get the same benefit.” The nine-month course, scheduled to start in February, is three days a week including one day on campus, two days online and workplace placement. Participants may also access mentoring from community service organisations, referrals to support services, social activities and closed Facebook pages. Maribyrnong Gift draws crowd More than 400 people to date have entered the Maribyrnong Gift, which is the only local event of its kind after COVID-19 shut down the Keilor and St Albans gifts. The event is being held at Braybrook’s Pennell Reserve on January 31. Cat owners in Melbourne’s north-west are being reminded to make sure their cats and kittens are fully vaccinated following more than 50 kittens dying across Melbourne from a Feline Parvovirus (Parvo) outbreak. Paws For A Purpose (PFAP) chief executive and veterinarian, Dr Mark Kelman said that local vets and cat rescue groups have reported deaths from the virus in a number of areas including Deer Park, Altona, Point Cook and Newport in the past month. Dr Kelman said Feline Parvo is a highly infectious and devastating disease that can kill both kittens and adult cats, with unvaccinated felines at a higher risk of catching the disease. Signs of Parvo disease include lethargy, lack of appetite, diarrhoea, vomiting, dehydration, and immune-suppression. “This current outbreak has been especially deadly with near 100 per cent fatality in the last month,” Dr Kelman said. “Kittens can die as quickly as in 24 hours, often without even showing any clinical signs first. “What is most worrying about this recent outbreak is the number of kittens affected in such a short time. “Although most cases in December were in rescue kittens, it is highly likely the virus is circulating in cat populations across Melbourne and pet cats – especially kittens – are at a high risk.” The origin of the outbreak is unknown, however, it is suspected that kittens brought in from regional areas may have seeded this latest outbreak. MY WYNDHAM Mark Fenton is a long-time Werribee resident and community volunteer. He chats with Alesha Capone. Tell me a bit about yourself? I turned 60 last August and have spent 57 years of that in Werribee, so I really see myself as a local. My wife Jennifer (nee Acciarito) was born in Werribee and we have been married for 38 years. We have two children and two granddaughters. I am an electrician by trade but spent the last 22 years in account management in the electrical world and happily retired in October 2019. As a teenager I was on the ISCW youth committee, then when married and children came along I was president of both their kindergartens – Sister Rita Douglas and College Road. I’m also a past committee and life member at Werribee Districts Football Club where I was involved from 1991 til 2017, so volunteering in the Werribee community has been a big part of my life. Being involved in a club is so enjoyable and rewarding.

Has your family lived in Werribee for a long time? My parents moved here in 1963, dad worked for The State Rivers and Water Supply Commission and mum looked after the family. My in-laws were part of the original market gardening families of Werribee dating back to 1920s. Both of my wife and I still have elderly mothers in Werribee.

If you had to change anything about Werribee, what would it be? The sheer size of Werribee, the traffic, a council that struggles to keep up with the growth. I’d love to see a council that is not full of factions and agendas. Let’s go back to that main street where everyone knows each other. Do you have a favourite restaurant or cafe in Werribee, or a favourite place to get a coffee? The South Corner, transformed from Gerald & Lou’s corner store which was an old favourite for many a Werribee kid for so many years. Now a modern-day cafe, great coffee and lovely staff. Loving the rebirth of the Bridge Hotel. Would you like to add anything else? Werribee has still got so much to offer, discover the Werribee River, join a club and get involved. You won’t regret it.

Has the area changed a lot since you were growing up? Werribee has changed so much, when I was younger you couldn’t walk up Watton Street and not have multiple conversations with people you knew. No traffic lights, no roundabouts, no congestion, there was never a problem getting from A to B. When I went to school no one carried a house key because no one locked their houses in Werribee. As kids

What do you like most about Werribee? Our history, feeling part of that. Having lifelong friends, great memories of a fantastic childhood in Werribee, spending winter Sundays at the VFA footy, which most of Werribee attended and all the players were locals. Nowadays seeing kids playing along our beautiful river – that’s one thing COVID has done, it’s helped people discover our river again. Wyndham Park is something to be proud of, what a magnificent asset for the people of Werribee. The wonderful walking paths along our river, we are so lucky to live on the river, I walk it every day. I’m loving the way the main street is starting to utilise the river.

Sloan, a Manor Lakes resident, is a landscape photographer who specialises in taking shots along the iconic Great Ocean Road. Recently, he wrote a photography guide to locations along the Great Ocean Road for his website’s blog. The post also serves as a guide for people wanting to travel within the area, including to its lesser-known spots. “Everyone has heard of the 12 Apostles and Hopetoun Falls, they’re the main ones,” he said.

“But as you go down the Great Ocean Road there are 10, 15 other amazing destinations that aren’t as well-known, such as Beauchamp Falls, Teddy’s Lookout and Clifton Springs.” Mr Sloan said some of Great Ocean Road’s attractions could be found within a 30-minute drive of Geelong, and a 45-minute drive from Werribee. “Especially when you can barely travel internationally at the moment, it’s great to remember we have these amazing places to visit,” he said. Sloan said it was also important to support local businesses along the Great Ocean Road, many of which have been impacted by a loss of trade from international and interstate tourists due to the pandemic. “Even if you just take a day trip, people need

A proposal to implement a new scale of fees for child care centres, involving quite steep rises, has been returned by the council to its general purposes committee for reassessment. The original proposal would have meant a 28 per cent increase to $45 a week for one child.

Women of the airforce

Oral historian and documentary maker Jessica Ferrari shares her “moving and inspirational” experience chronicling the untold stories of the Women’s Royal Australian Air Force in Point Cook. She talks with Alesha Capone.

s Ferrari runs Memento Media, making legacy memoirs and celebration tributes for individuals, communities and organisations. In 2017, she received a grant from the federal government’s Community Heritage and Icon Grants Program to create an eight-part documentary series about the Women’s Royal Australian Air Force (WRAAF) personnel who were based at Point Cook’s air base between 1951 and 1977. The series, which was a finalist in last year’s Victorian Community History Awards and Premier’s History Awards, features archival footage, photos and interviews celebrating the contribution which the “amazing women” of the WRAAF made to the nation. Ms Ferrari said a letter of support from RAAF historian Martin James was a great help in enlisting support for her online documentary series, which has been viewed more than 17,500 times. Ms Ferrari said she came up with the idea for the series after visiting the RAAF Museum in Point Cook, where she was impressed by the aircraft displays but did not see much about the WRAAF’s heritage. Elantra well worth considering By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Hyundai i30 hatch has been a big seller for many years in Australia, but the i30 sedan, confusingly called Elantra rather than i30, is well worth consideration. The fourth generation Elantra reached us here in August 2006. It’s the one we are concentrating on in this used car checkout. Styling at that time was unashamedly Korean, with the sort of lines that didn’t appeal to Aussies. The fifth generation Elantra, from July 2011 is more European in style. Then from February 2016 the gen-six Elantra arguably led the way on the international market with lines that some European cars look to be following. It is not just the styling that’s making Hyundai Elantra stand out. The South Korean marques – Hyundai and Kia are allied with one another – and are starting to lead the world in build quality, owner satisfaction and reliability. Australian engineers are being more and more involved in the steering and suspension departments during the design stages. You wouldn’t call Elantra a sports sedan, but for its class it’s not too bad. Elantra is almost a full four-seater for adults in its latest iteration, with each new generation providing a slightly larger car with a bit more interior space. Headroom for tall travellers may be limited, especially if a sunroof is fiftted, so take your teenagers along for a test drive before settling on an Elantra. Three kids in the back seat will have room to move, especially in the later generations. Power for the gen-four Elantra comes from 2.0-litre engine matched with either a fifve-speed manual or four-speed auto. A new generation four-cylinder 1.8-litre engine arrived in the generation-fifve Elantra, power was transferred to the front wheels

though manual or automatic transmission, both with six forward ratios. This responsive unit and added gears improved performance and reduced emissions. An improved version of the 1.8 arrived with the next generation Elantra in 2016. Its capacity was increased to 2.0 litres. It also had a six-speed manual or six-speed auto. October 2016 saw Hyundai stick a toe-in-the-water with a medium-performance model called the Elantra SR Turbo. It has been reasonably successful and owners say they love them. When looking to buy a used sporty car be aware it may have been thrashed. Late in 2018 the Elantra range received a facelit, with a cascading grille, redesigned headlights and taillights, an integrated bootlid spoiler and lower diffuser. Inside there’s a revamped dashboard, a Supervision infotainment cluster, there was a new steering wheel design and new trims and fifnishes. Hyundai Elantra Active gets an 8.0-inch touchscreen satellite navigation system paired

with an eight-speaker Infifnity premium audio system with a DAB+ radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Since its early rough and ready days Down Under in the mid-1980s, Hyundai has improved out of sight and is now a major player on our market. Spare parts and servicing costs are about average for this class and we’ve heard no major complaints on prices or availability of parts Insurance is about average in this class.

What to look for We haven’t seen many ex-rental Hyundai Elantras, but be wary of any with a lot of kilometres on the clock. Seat trim and boot mats that are in poor condition may intricate an uncaring owner. It’s possibly also a sign of an ex-rental car. A clicking noise when the steering wheel is turned probably means coupling may be damaged. The covering on the steering wheel may flake off. It’s not a danger, but is unsightly.

Make sure that all electrical items work correctly. Using the owner’s handbook instructions is the simplest way to make sure you cover everything. Check the engine starts easily, especially if it’s cold. A manual gearbox which crunches on fast downchanges could be due for an overhaul, or there may be a clutch problem.

SPORT National competition preferred for second tier A true national soccer competition is the favoured model for the National Second Division (NSD) competition. The Reshaping the second tier of football in Australia progress report, released last week, sets out the proposed working model for the NSD as developed by Association of Australian Football Clubs [AAFC] together with its NSD Partner Group. It identifies and explores the critical success factors for a successful NSD and discusses the available options for governance and commercial arrangements for the new league, and its clubs. Among the 32 clubs in the partner group are local clubs Altona Magic, Hume City, Caroline Springs George Cross and Melbourne Knights.

The report states that Football Australia chief executive James Johnson, has repeatedly said it was no longer about “if” we will have a national second division but about “how” and “when”. In the report, the group highlights the forming of a new competition in 2022-23 with 12 clubs initially and plans to expand to 16 by 2025. It states there is a pathway gap between the A-League and the NPL clubs. “This report is about what our member clubs can contribute to Football Australia in establishing and operating a true national second tier,” it states. “It is about the best possible. Not about a notional ‘best’ or the merely ‘possible’.” Promotion and relegation with the NPL competitions is essential for the competition,

with discussions about promotion and relegation with the A-League once the competition is established also on the cards. The report looked at three different models for how the competition could run – a national competition; a conference system; and the existing National Premier League’s playing an extended national finals series. The partner group’s view is for a singular national competition. “The proposed model represents the best possible financially viable and responsible true second tier which can be delivered. “We understand it may disappoint those with more ambitious hopes for it from the start – that it might be immediately fully professional, for example.”

While it’s predicted to cost more than the other options, more than $1 million per club, overall the competition structure’s benefits outweigh the others. “As disclosed by the analysis, any savings in travel costs are more than off-set by the expected reduced revenue from such a model,” the report states. “Further, the wider benefits a truly national second division will bring to the game will not be achieved by a localised conference model.” The report a states a national second tier women’s competition would kick-off in 2025. NSD clubs continue to participate in NPL at youth level. The final report is due in April. Tara Murray

Squad leads the way By Tara Murray Williamstown Athletics Club is putting together a female track and field squad to rival the best in the country. Led by Australia’s top female heptathlete Celeste Mucci, the squad includes a number of talented athletes and, with the development of some exciting talent coming through, has coaches at the club excited. Club president Stefan Voorham said the club was proud of its female program. “Through all their hard work, our female athletes have recently achieved fantastic results with six state titles at the 2020 State Championships,” he said. “The Williamstown Athletic Club is excited to watch their development and see them reach their goals.” Mucci, who has been part of the club since she was a little athlete, has gone on to represent Australia in the heptathlon in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games where she placed 4th overall. Mucci said the club had done a lot for her and her career. “I’ve been with Williamstown since I was a junior and transitioned to seniors with them,” she said. “I love my small club. They have done a lot to support me over the years and I’m excited to have more of my squad join this amazing club.” Maddie Coates, Kiara Reddingius, Jessie Andrew and Mareelou Boyle have all joined the club in recent years. Coates, from Watsonia, has represented Australia at both junior and senior level, including at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2019 World Championships in both the 200 metres and 4 x 100 metres relay. Coates said Williamstown felt like the right fit for her, having previously been involved in coaching clinics at the club. Reddingius, who moved to Avondale Heights from Western Australia, has been with the club the past two seasons and has represented Australia at the Oceanic Games. Jessie Andrew, who is from Riddells Creek, was the 100 metre sprint champion at the Oceanic Championships in 2017 and was the 2020 state 200 metre champion. Yarraville’s Mareelou Boyle has been at the club the past two years and was part of the Australian 4 x 200m indoor relay team that set a new Australian record in 2017. Mucci and Andrew were also part of that team. Up-and-comer Ashlee Farrar is also impressing. She won the Stawell Gift Little Athletics 100m in 2019 and holds many Williamstown Little Athletic records. The club is also establishing a strong coaching line-up. Elite distance running coach Elizabeth Mathews is involved at the club. Among the athletes she trains are Olympian and western suburbs athlete Morgan Mitchell and up-and-coming athletes Lucinda Rourke,

She said the club is supportive of coaches and athletes and having both a little aths and senior club allows great transition from junior to senior athletics. Darren Clark, another high profile coach at the club, highlighted the location and

supportive club as reasons for their success. Coach Robbie Spencer, who specialises in sprints, hurdles and long jump, believes that having elite, approachable and dedicated role models will ensure the young athletes can “be what they can see”. “We pride ourselves on being a club that accepts any athlete that wants to join.”

Melton Bowls Club members were keen observers of the Bowls Victoria State Champions week earlier this month. With four of its new recruits among those competing against the best of the state, there was plenty of excitement. New club coach Todd Trewarne, along with a young trio of stars Lisa Trewarne, Sophie Kurzman and Lily Dodd, all put in some strong performances. Melton’s Conrad Dawson said the club hadn’t seen results such as these at a state level in a long time. “Results aside this season, we’ve had some amazing young kids coming to the club and kicking goals. “The kids were flying at the championships against the champions of different clubs and regions. “We’ve brought a lot of youth into the club. It was something the club had to do and we’re focusing on. “They’ve done a fantastic job and we’re proud as punch.” Lisa Trewarne paired with her old Sunbury teammate Carla Krizanic, who also won the champion of champions women’s single title, to claim the women’s pairs title in a thriller. Todd Trewarne also teamed up with Krizanic, winning the mixed pairs by one shot. Dodd, who came across from Bacchus Marsh, made the semi-finals of the under-18 girls competition and the final of the under-18 open triples. Kurzman, who came from Sunbury, along with the Trewarnes, won the under-18 girls pairs title. Lisa Trewarne and Kurzman also made the semi-finals of the women’s fours, alongside Krizanic and Akasha Fortune. Dawson said all four had fitted in well in their Saturday pennant side and the club.
