Pupils at a Hoppers Crossing school were surprised when a red helicopter, bearing an important visitor, landed on their oval on Friday. Santa Claus arrived at Woodville Primary School, express from the North Pole, to wish the children a merry Christmas. Assistant principal Jodi Binion said Santa sang Christmas carols, handed out lollipops and posed for photos with each class and school staff. Mrs Binion said that helicopter company Mile High Australia helped to organise Santa’s visit. “We thought it would just be a nice way to celebrate the end of the year and surprise the children,” she said. “It just lifted our school … seeing the reactions and joy from the pupils.”

Council controversy erupts By Alesha Capone A Wyndham councillor has accused his colleagues of dictatorship-like behaviour and is calling for an external investigation. Councillors were last week due to confirm the appointment of Cr Josh Gilligan as Wyndham’s delegate to the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV). However, six of the 11 councillors instead voted for Cr Sahana Ramesh to be the delegate. Cr Gilligan was elected as the MAV’s interim president last month when the serving president retired. The MAV board will elect a

new president on March 5. A motion by Cr Mia Shaw that Cr Ramesh become MAV delegate if Cr Gilligan does not retain the MAV presidency after March 5, was defeated. Cr Gilligan said the Wyndham councillors who voted against him becoming the MAV delegate were using the opportunity “to exact political revenge”. He described the behaviour as similar to what is “seen in dictatorships”. “Taking that away tonight is the most egregious breach of trust and teamwork that anyone would ever have seen in a council,

except for examples of where councils have ultimately led to their own demise,” Cr Gilligan said. In a statement issued after the meeting, Cr Gilligan said the council was “deeply divided with the personal agendas of newly elected councillors triumphing over decisions that are in the best interests of the community”. He said the councillors conduct also “speaks to an emerging toxic culture within the council that must be externally investigated”. Cr Heather Marcus said that Cr Gilligan, who has served on the MAV board for four years, had represented the council in “a brilliant,

outstanding way”. She said the six councillors who voted for Cr Ramesh were engaging in “bloc voting” and that Wyndham “will be the laughing stock of all the councils in the western suburbs” for not appointing Cr Gilligan, given his experience in the role. “I just feel really sad that we’ve got to this situation … I can see a monitor coming in and probably we will get sacked over this type of behavior,” she said. However, Cr Jasmine Hill and Cr Susan McIntyre said they both did “due diligence” in deciding to vote for Cr Ramesh.

New design to stop leaking roof By Alesha Capone Wyndham council is working on a new design to permanently fix the leaking roof at Werribee’s Eagle Stadium. The $47 million stadium has been plagued by a leaking roof since its construction about four years ago, forcing the cancellation of basketball and netball games on days of heavy rainfall. Council city operations director Stephen Thorpe said designs for the permanent roof works would be finalised by the end of the year.

“We’ll release a tender for the works in early 2021,” he said. “We’ve planned for up to $7 million to complete the permanent works in our budget, however this will not be known until the tender process is completed.” “Unfortunately, leaks will continue to happen from time to time until a permanent fix is in place,” he said. “We know how important these works are to provide an uninterrupted experience for stadium visitors and will have a contractor on-site to start the works as soon as the tender process is complete.”

The council’s website states that some of the sources of Eagle Stadium’s roof woes include leaking from skylights, box gutters and roof panels. While design work is under way on a permanent solution, interim measures will include taping some roof areas to prevent leaks. A trial of the taping method will run between March 2 to 20 to assess its effectiveness. “Council appreciates the frustrations of the community/users of the facility and that’s why we have been looking at the best ways to minimise disruptions in the short term, while

taking the necessary steps to resolve the issue permanently,” Mr Thorpe said. “Our priority is to ensure the roof stops leaking permanently, and once the issue is resolved we will then consider steps to recoup costs.” In June, former mayor Cr Josh Gilligan said the council would pursue the parties responsible for the leaking roof. “We will recoup the cost, of what we can, to ratepayers,” he said at the time. Willow’s Christmas wish Bergman said. “She keeps reliving the story at school and re-telling the teachers about talking to Santa. “Willow’s a very happy kid and she’s very active, even though with her condition she tires out fairly easily. “We call her Willow the Warrior because she fights so hard and never gives up.” Mrs Bergman said that Willow, who loves swimming and playing T-ball, worked hard on her cardiovascular fitness with the help of a physiotherapist. Willow developed her wish to go swimming with Nemo and Dory because she has spent a lot of time at The Royal Children’s Hospital, where she enjoyed watching fish in a large aquarium. During the pandemic, Make-A-Wish has sent Willow postcards from Nemo, colouring-in items and a video showing her around the Cairns Aquarium.

Six-year-old Willow joined Santa Claus to switch on the Christmas lights in Federation Square earlier this month. Make-A-Wish Australia and the City of Melbourne organised for the young Point Cook resident to switch on the lights, accompanied by her parents Paul and Mary Bergman and siblings James, 20, Ellisha, 14, Lincoln, 12, and Amelia, nine. Willow, who has hypoplastic left heart syndrome, underwent open-heart surgery when she was just six days old. She has since had another three surgeries. Mr and Mrs Bergman said that Make-A-Wish Australia has been working to grant Willow’s wish of swimming with Nemo and Dory, from Finding Nemo, in the ocean. When this was put hold due to COVID-19, Make-A-Wish arranged for Willow to turn on the Federation Square lights. “We’ve never seen her so excited, she started dancing around and wouldn’t stop,” Mr

Two WynActive staff members have been recognised at this year’s Aquatics and Recreation Victoria awards. AquaPulse member relations team member Sarah Chadwick took out the ARV’s Victorian Member Sales Award. Eagle Stadium staff member Shelby Rae received the Most Valuable Employee Award. Ms Chadwick started out as a lifeguard with WynActive. She progressed to become a swim teacher and swim school leader, before joining the sales team. AquaPulse and the Werribee Outdoor Pool general manager Barry Harrison said Ms Chadwick was “an outstanding example of an emerging young leader in our industry”. “Her award success is acknowledgement of her dedication and ability to understand what

drives a person to want to live a healthier life,” he said. Ms Rae has been employed in a range of roles across WynActive since 2015. She has served as a stadium officer and founding team member at Eagle Stadium, where she is now centre care manager. Prior to this, she worked at AquaPulse. Eagle Stadium manager Rod Gaut said Ms Rae’s personal and professional attributes have seen her continually exceed expectations in the workplace. “Shelby has always given her absolute best for our team and customers and is viewed as a mentor and a role model by her peers,” he said. AquaPulse also received the Watch Around Water gong at the ARV awards for the fourth year in a row.

New record for Hoppers By Alesha Capone A Hoppers Crossing house with its own putting green and in-ground trampoline has sold for $1.67 million, setting a new record for the suburb. The five-bedroom property, at 5 Amstel Court, was sold last week by Abhi Elawadhi and Kamlesh Kamani from Reliance Real Estate. Mr Elawadhi said the house set a price record for non-acreage residences in Hoppers Crossing. He said other houses in the area have fetched higher than $1.67 million, but they have all been on blocks of about an acre or more – the Amstel Court house is on about 0.36 of an acre.

In 2018, Reliance sold 19-21 Ashley Avenue in Hoppers Crossing – which is on just over half an acre – for $1.6 million. The Amstel Court property has a sauna, basketball court, four-car garage and features an 80,000-litre swimming pool with a solar-heated spa and an alfresco area with a built-in barbecue equipped with natural gas. “It’s one of the unique houses in the area, it’s only nine years old and most of the houses in the area are around 20 years old,” Mr Elawadhi said. Business as usual at U-Vet The University of Melbourne says that no changes are planned to operations or staffing levels at the U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital “at this time” despite reports some staff would be made redundant. Racing.com last week reported that the university was looking to make 11 of the 50 academics at the hospital redundant. It was also reported that the future of the university’s Werribee Equine Centre, which provides care for international racehorses ahead of the Spring Carnival, was “clouded” due to “considerable changes” which could potentially be rolled out. The Equine Centre’s head, Dr Chris Whitten, said the university was in discussions as to how it could “deal with the substantial shortfall in income based on the loss of international students”. In a statement, a university spokesperson said: “There are no changes to U-Vet operations or staffing at this time. “Staff are currently being consulted on a proposed change plan for the U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital as part of the university’s response to the impact of COVID-19, but no decisions have been made and no changes have been implemented. “U-Vet Werribee Equine Centre is a valuable research hub and the university plans to maintain it so our researchers can continue their work.” Alesha Capone

Top gig for Werribee farmer By Alesha Capone Werribee South egg farmer Danyel Cucinotta says she is “humbled and grateful” to be elected vice-president of the Victorian Farmers Federation. Mrs Cucinotta, 28, is the federation’s youngest-ever vice-president. Her appointment was announced last week, along with the federation’s new president, South Gippsland farmer Emma Germano. Together, Mrs Cucinotta and Ms Germano are the first female leadership team in the VVF’s history.

Along with her sister Renay Ahmed, Mrs Cucinotta is a third-generation farmer at LT’s Egg Farm in Werribee South. Mrs Cucinotta said she first started attending VFF meetings with her father, Brian Ahmed, who is president of the federation’s Eggs Commodity Group. She has also volunteered with the VFF’s Egg Group committee, which represents 33 Victorian egg producers. Last year, Mrs Cucinotta was invited to address a state parliamentary inquiry into the impact of animal rights activism on agriculture.

Mrs Cucinotta said that as the VFF’s vice-president, she would work with groups focused on all aspects of farming to ensure they were represented in policy and political decisions. “For local farmers, access to affordable water will always be a massive one,” she said. “For me personally, I’m very passionate about animal welfare within agriculture and guidelines in that area are under review at the moment.” Mrs Cucinotta said that in becoming the VFF vice-president, she hoped to be a strong role model for her own daughter.

Get ready to explore An Explorer Scavenger Hunt has been launched across 11 parks and reserves in Wyndham. The free Wyndham council initiative has been designed to help children and families stay active during summer and enjoy their local parks in a new way. The scavenger hunt can be completed at just one park or all of the locations. Heathdale Glen Orden Wetlands, Riverbend Historical Park, Riverwalk Village Park and Wyndham Park in Werribee feature in the scavenger hunt, along with Point Cook’s Coastal Park and Saltwater Coast Crocodile Park. Hogans Road Reserve in Hoppers Crossing, Skeleton Creek (Autumn Fields Circuit) in Tarneit, Mainview Boulevard Park in Truganina, the Werribee South Foreshore and Presidents Park in Wyndham Vale are also included.

Wyndham’s active city portfolio holder, councillor Peter Maynard, encouraged residents to get involved in the Explorer Scavenger Hunt. “Wyndham Explorer provides new reasons to visit our parks close by as well as head out to explore parks that you haven’t been to during the school holidays,” Cr Maynard said. “The scavenger hunt is also a great way for families to be active together.” Maps and clues to be used in the scavenger hunts can be found on the council’s website, along with a series of questions to test your explorer skills. Family, sports centres planned By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has awarded a $26.2 million contract to build facilities including family centres and sports fields in Truganina and Tarneit. The council announced Commercial Industrial Construction Group as the successful tender bidder last week. Mayor Adele Hegedich said the company would begin on-site works for the Truganina South East and Tarneit North master plans in January. The Truganina South East area, which is

bound by Boundary, Derrimut, Leakes and Forsyth roads, covers 1089 hectares. There are plans for up to 9105 new houses to be built there in the coming years. The Truganina South East master plan includes an integrated family centre with early education and care rooms, a sports pavilion, fields for soccer and cricket, tennis courts and a carpark. Tarneit North, an area of 1065 hectares – where 10,200 new homes will be built – is bordered by Boundary, Davis, Leakes and Derrimut roads. Its master plan includes an integrated family

centre, public playground and carpark. According to Wyndham council’s ‘The Loop’ website, the two integrated family centres are due to be built by the end of next year. The Truganina sports pavilion and open space is due for completion by June 30, 2022. The council’s city design portfolio holder, Cr Josh Gilligan, said: “As our population grows at a rapid rate, it’s important that we work to build a liveable city where residents can access all the services they need close to home – and this project will deliver just that”.

Vandals target park Wyndham ratepayers have forked out $1700 to clean up graffiti at a newly-upgraded Werribee skate park. One of the latest cases of vandalism included Nazi and satanic symbols spray-painted onto the Loyola Reserve skate facility earlier this month. Wyndham council officially opened the new skate park in November. Council city operations director Stephen Thorpe said: “We are incredibly disheartened to see this new $345,000 skate park, which formed part of Wyndham City’s 2019-20 capital works program, being vandalised. “Council has received five complaints of graffiti at this skate park since it was upgraded earlier this year, which has cost ratepayers $1700 to remove.” Mr Thorpe said the council was “constantly looking at ways to prevent graffiti in our city and one of the most effective ways to combat this behaviour is through public artwork”.

He said the council has two ‘Legal Wall’ areas which youths can visit to legally create artwork. “Council’s graffiti team also runs mural workshops and projects to assist youth who want to express themselves in a creative manner,” Mr Thorpe said. “We also provide graffiti education sessions to school students to make youth aware of the negative impacts of illegal graffiti not only for themselves but for the wider community.” Mr Thorpe said the council recorded all graffiti incidents in Wyndham and reported them to Victoria Police. “To report graffiti or to express an anti-graffiti artwork idea, please email graffiti@wyndham. vic.gov.au,” Mr Thorpe said. Fundraiser’s street appeal Angela, Henry and Lily are ensuring that Santa’s reindeer will have plenty of room to land at their house on Christmas Eve, while helping a good cause. The siblings’ parents have installed a sign reading “Be Aware Reindeer Landing” in the garden of their Hoppers Crossing home. Many Woodville households, who have decorated their properties for the festive season, have also erected the signs which encourage passing pedestrians to make a donation to the Werribee Hospital Foundation (WHF) Christmas appeal. Driver school zone warning By Alesha Capone Motorists are being urged to take care when driving in school zones. Within the past two weeks, Star Weekly has been contacted by local residents concerned about driver behaviour on Tarneit Road. A school, kindergarten, early learning centre and childcare centre are all located along the busy road. One resident, who did not want to be named, said she was driving in a 40km/h zone of Tarneit Road last week, near a school crossing,

when she saw several motorists driving faster than the permitted speed limit. The resident said she was honked at by other drivers, presumably for obeying the speed limit, and tailgated by another vehicle. “I’m worried what might happen if one of these speeding cars can’t stop at the school crossing in time,” the woman said. “I’d hate for them to hit a child or the crossing supervisor.” Another resident said he was not sure if drivers realise the school year wasn’t over. A Victoria Police spokesperson said

Operation Drive Through was under way in Wyndham. “It is focused on speeding, pedestrian behaviour, seat belts, parking and other dangerous road user behaviour with a view to reducing road trauma and collisions,” the spokesperson said. “Westgate Highway patrol officers and local members regularly patrol and enforce school zone speed limits including school zones in Tarneit Road.” Wyndham council’s director of city operations, Stephen Thorpe, said: “Wyndham

City urges all drivers to be mindful of their driving behaviour, particularly around schools in order to ensure the safety of Wyndham families and our school crossing supervisors.” “Council works closely with Victoria Police to ensure drivers remain under the prescribed speed limits, particularly around the 40km/h school zones from 8am to 9.30am and from 2.30pm to 4pm, and to follow the guidance of school crossing supervisors,” Mr Thorpe said. He said the council regularly placed electronic signage around the municipality and schools, warning drivers to slow down.

Prehistoric park preview Some lucky youngsters were given a sneak-peak of the highly-anticipated dinosaur-themed park in Truganina this week. Children and families living in the Stockland Grandview estate were invited to road-test the park on Monday, before it opens to the general public next year. The Grandview Dinosaur Park, one of the largest residential prehistoric-themed parks in the state, was inspired by the history of the site and the nearby Mt Atkinson Conservation Reserve being a dormant volcano. The new communal space spans across one hectare at Altezze Drive, between Healey Drive and Bratan Way. Construction of the $1.5 million Grandview Dinosaur Park started this year. The park features a custom-made dinosaur head sculpture measuring 3.2 metres in length; a multi-storey play tower with dual-level slide arms landing on pads framed with claws, a

climbable sculptural tail, dinosaur eggs with baby dinosaurs popping out, a flying fox, swings, a matrix climber and see-saws. The park also features several open spaces including a 50 x 50-metre lawn kick-about area for picnicking and exercising, and a large picnic shelter area with barbecue facilities and a drinking fountain. Stockland project director Ed Krushka said: “The Dinosaur Park has been in construction for over a year and we are very excited for Grandview residents to experience the new space as we head into peak summer. “As our community grows, it’s encouraging to be able to offer residents in the area access to one of the largest prehistoric residential themed parks in Victoria – providing a safe and fun place for all families to enjoy.” The new park gets put through its paces by local children. Panic over infestation By Alesha Capone Large tumbleweeds are causing a nightmare for residents living in part of Truganina. The serrated tussock – also known as hairy panic – is being blown into the houses and gardens of the Forsyth Park area. Since early November, strong winds have carried the tumbleweeds from the nearby 44-hectare Truganina South Nature Reserve onto residential properties, according to local man Sam Mathew. It is believed the problem has been exacerbated by a lack of maintenance at the reserve since March, due to COVID-19 lockdowns. “It [the tumbleweeds] all comes inside the house … it is in our front yard and backyard, it just hangs around the property,” Mr Mathew said. “You can’t vacuum it up easily from the carpet, it’s really long and thin, and you have to pick it out manually. It’s really sharp as well. “Some other residents have had the weeds right on their front door and garage, and can’t even get in and out of their homes.” Mr Mathew said his wife and some other residents have allergic reactions to the weeds, including rashes. “When you’re drying your clothes outside, it gets into them and the pricks are very sharp,” he said. “It gets into the trampoline and scratches the kids.” Residents are also worried the weeds could pose a fire danger. Mr Mathew said authorities had “passed the buck” or did not take the matter seriously when residents complained about the weeds. However, he said Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly had taken on their cause. “She really, really helped us out,” he said.

Earlier this month, Ms Connolly organised a Zoom meeting between residents, Parks Victoria, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and other bodies. Mr Mathew said contractors have since begun cleaning up the weeds. Parks Victoria is also looking at installing higher fences temporarily around the reserve. Ms Connolly said DELWP and Parks Victoria confirmed their commitment to removing the

weed from the area and explained the negative impact the weed is having on the biodiversity of the conservation reserve. The resilience of the weed means it will take a few years to eradicate it. She said a community fire safety briefing for residents is also being organised with the Truganina CFA. “I am committed to providing affected residents with ongoing support … until the weed is removed entirely,” she said.

New home for indoor sports A new sports complex has officially been opened in Truganina. Badminton & Table Tennis Connect – an initiative to establish world-class inclusive, accessible and affordable indoor sports facilities for the Wyndham community – launched its Infinity Drive facility at the weekend. The centre includes 14 badminton courts and has the capacity to hold up to 20 table tennis tables, including four wheelchair-accessible tables. Other indoor games and activities such as carrom (a tabletop game of Indian origin) chess, yoga and meditation will be available at the Truganina premises. The facility is the biggest combined badminton and table tennis centre in the west of Melbourne. Tarneit resident Nandakumar Alavandar, a long-time table tennis player and an Australian National Veteran Champion, is one of the organisers behind the new sports complex. Mr Alavandar established the Tarneit Table Tennis Club about 12 months ago after local parents began asking him to coach their children. He said the talent shown by his students inspired him to plan for the Infinity Drive complex, and he collaborated with the Badminton Connect team to deliver the new facility. New plea to green the west By Alesha Capone A state Opposition member has called for more trees to be planted across the western suburbs. Western region MP Bernie Finn made a speech in Parliament last month, calling on Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio to increase the number of trees in Wyndham, Brimbank, Melton and Hobsons Bay. Mr Finn said that while many parts of the west were “green and leafy”, several areas – especially new developments – have barely any

trees. “Their houses are built and they have a road and footpath, and that is about it,” he said. “What we need is a comprehensive and intensive program to ensure that more trees are planted throughout the western suburbs of Melbourne, because not only does it enhance the aesthetics of the local area but of course it also, as has been pointed out, does lower the temperature.” Mr Finn suggested he and Ms D’Ambrosio work together to organise a program to plant a “substantial” number of trees in the west.

Star Weekly reported recently that Wyndham has the lowest level of green coverage in the nation, according to a study from RMIT University and Greener Spaces Better Places. The research found that just 5.4 per cent of Wyndham was covered by trees and shrubs. Melton placed second-lowest for tree coverage in the report, followed by Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Hume, Port Adelaide Enfield and Brimbank. A Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) spokesperson said that the state government was “working

to increase tree cover in Melbourne through policies both within Plan Melbourne 2017-2050 and Victoria’s Climate Change Adaption Plan 2017-2050”. The recent state budget delivered $92.3 million to restore land and plant four million trees across more than 6000 hectares. Wyndham city operations director Stephen Thorpe said the council was planning to plant 21,500 trees in the coming year. The council also planted 11,800 street trees and a further 31,000 shrubs and trees in the 2019-20 financial year.

Betty Parker has spent the past 40 years volunteering for Wyndham’s Meals on Wheels service and other charitable groups. Mrs Parker started delivering meals in 1980 with her mother, who volunteered for the Red Cross, a number of church organisations and Baptcare. Mrs Parker’s father was also active in the community, working on the local hospital’s board. Mrs Parker is an op shop volunteer and a member of the Werribee Craft Festival committee. The annual event, which has been running for more than four decades, raises funds for Wyndham charities and causes. “Volunteering is giving back to your community in some way,” Mrs Parker said. “It’s nice to help people and you’re helping yourself by being out and about.” Mrs Parker said her husband was a great

supporter of her volunteer work. “You can only do volunteering when you’ve got a good husband who puts up with you going out and about all the time,” she said. In 2010, Mrs Parker was named Wyndham council’s Citizen of the Year. Wyndham’s active city portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard said Mrs Parker’s contribution to the municipality demonstrated an “outstanding commitment”. Open house for art Local artists will have their work shown in a free digital exhibition at the Wyndham Art Gallery. Presented by Wyndham council, OPEN HOUSE will run until January 17. The show reflects the growth of Wyndham’s art community, with work from 10 artists who work across a variety of mediums, ranging from video to paper-mâché. Cats sell Point Cook hotel The Geelong Football Club has sold The Brook hotel in Point Cook to the Melbourne Racing Club. Geelong FC chief executive Brian Cook described the sale as “a proud day for our club”. “While there may have been sound reasons for entering gaming years ago, we recognised that this was not aligned with our club values and wider community expectations,” he said. “In recent years we have been working toward a complete exit from gaming. MY WYNDHAM Sasha Deenathayalan, 18, was a recipient of the One Wyndham award last month. The Wyndham council award recognises young people aged between 12 and 25 who positively contribute to the community and are role models to other youth. Sasha chats with Alesha Capone.

How did you come to serve as a member of the Wyndham West District Advisory Committee? I was on the committee during its 2018 and 2019 terms, from February to December, for two years. I was the committee’s youngest-ever member. I was attending the local Youth Services every second week and a youth worker there showed me the expression of interest card for joining the committee. I thought, ‘Why not, the worst thing that can happen is that I may not get on the committee.’ I also thought it would be a good experience in getting interviewed. I understand you became something of a youth spokesperson on the committee, is that right? I didn’t set out to become a youth spokesperson but I ended up being the only person under the age of 30 on the committee. One of the priorities of the Wyndham West District Advisory Committee was engaging with young people and a lot of the members turned to me when there were matters related to youth. There

was also a teacher on the committee, so she could speak about that too. A lot of it is trying to get young people involved in things, but sometimes that is hard. You have also volunteered at other Wyndham events? During my time on the committee I was asked if I wanted to get involved in community clean-up days, in which NatureWest was involved. Some people said, ‘Let’s start doing a clean-up around the Manor Lakes area’ and we organised a couple of events to do that. I have also volunteered with Wyndham Youth Services, at events like the Winter Street Party in Werribee. What do you enjoy about volunteering? I love helping people, I have always thought it is one of my strengths – there is a quality in me, that I love to help people. You were school captain this year and you have also finished year 12. What’s next? My initial plan is to go to university to do a double-degree, hopefully in law and international studies. (Supplied)

How did you react when you heard you would receive the One Wyndham award? I was very surprised and I am very grateful. I looked at the previous participants and I know a few, because I have met them at multiple events. I know how well-accredited they are.

Western Savings Credit Union which went into liquidation on 23 July, re-opened its doors yesterday with a new name and the support of one of Victoria’s biggest and strongest credit unions. The old credit union has been purchased by a new credit union, Western Credit Co-operative Limited, which is associated with Telecom Employees Credit Co-Operative Limited which has 16,000 members and assets of over $30 million.

Wyndham council has declined to rule out the possibility that the poisoning of local peppercorn trees was conducted unknowingly by workers employed under its auspices to do environmental work in the city. Speaking yesterday, the city’s chief executive officer Mr Ian Robins indicated that the peppercorns were scheduled for removal down the track.

The weather is warming up as we head further into summer here in Melbourne. So, what exactly does that mean for your exercise routine – especially if you prefer to exercise outdoors? Rather than languishing in the heat and letting your exercise go by the wayside, these hints and tips will help you get the most out of your outdoor summer workouts. As the UV levels can be much higher in summer, it is very important to be SunSmart during your outdoor workouts. Ideally, head outdoors before 10am or after 3pm – to avoid the peak of the UV levels, and it is more likely to be cooler. Even then, it is wise to wear a broad spectrum sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, a loose fitting top that covers your neck and shoulders and stay in the shade as much as you can. Before, during and after your summer workout, staying hydrated is important. There is much conjecture over what is an appropriate daily amount of water for the average adult to consume – but it is widely accepted that about two litres is a great benchmark. So, if you do a strenuous workout on a summer’s day, aiming for more than this will help your recovery. Make your water more enjoyable by adding ice cubes, some citrus slices, summer berries or a sprig of mint. Being outdoors in Australia in summer can bring with it some interesting challenges – in the form of our dangerous wildlife! Most

infamously, our venomous snakes. You are more likely to encounter a snake near a water source, so take care when walking along river and creek tracks. Keep dogs on leads and steer

clear of long grass. You may wish to change up your workout routine for the hotter days. A few laps of the pool may be better suited to summer than your

lunchtime run. Or get out and about early, before the heat of the day sets in – and getting out early gets the workout done and dusted, rather than having it looming over your head all day. You may also wish to try something new – like stand up paddle boarding or indoor rock-climbing. Take advantage of having the kids around on their school holidays by exercising in ways that suit them – going out for a family bike ride, or a hike, or even a swim at the beach. Any physical activity is better than none, so even if you aren’t specifically working out, you are still getting some exercise. Moving your body can be fun and a really positive way to spend time as a family. And as for fuelling your body for all this movement? Take advantage of all the fresh, seasonal fruit that we have available in summer. Stone fruits (peaches, nectarines and apricots) are plentiful and budget-friendly at this time of the year. Watermelon is a great snack and can help keep you hydrated. The possibilities for summer salads are endless and a great way to get your five daily serves of vegetables. Enjoy the wonderful, warm, long days of summer. It is recommended that Australian adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous (enough to leave you out of breath) exercise per week – so get your minutes in by exploring our great outdoors with your nearest and dearest.

Operation Roadwise kicks off During the 2020 Christmas and New Year holiday period, Victoria Police will be conducting Operation Roadwise from Friday, December 18, 2020 to Wednesday, January 6, 2021. Road policing adviser Sergeant Marty Wallace from Westgate Highway Patrol says during this road policing operation, Victoria Police will implement a strategically co-ordinated and tactically-focused approach targeting the key contributing factors to road trauma. Police will be targeting the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries in crashes which are: • Excessive speed • Driver distraction • Restraint and seat belt non-compliance • Fatigue • Impaired driving (alcohol and/or drug) “We’re watching your speed,” Marty says. “Are you?” “Motorists will see numerous police units on our major arterial roads during this holiday period and speed cameras will be set up in identified speed and high collision locations throughout the state. “Those planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major freeways and highways.” Police will be targeting drivers who attend end of year work functions as it has been identified that some drivers will take risks whilst they are impaired by alcohol and drugs. Sergeant Wallace encourages drivers to plan their trips, be patient and ensure that they have frequent breaks when driving long distances. “Road trauma isn’t just about the lives that are lost – it’s about the enormous impact on the community from family members, to the

emergency service workers who have to deal with these tragedies … and to the police who deliver devastating news to loved ones. “All of the community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma. Travel so that you arrive at your destination safely and enjoy your Christmas and New Year holiday.” RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings says it has been demonstrated time after time that speed

is a contributing factor in most road crashes. “Stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions,” he says. “Speeding increases both the risk of a crash … and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen.” Mr Giddings said the work of his group, along with initiatives such as Operation Roadwise during the 2020 Christmas and New Year holiday period would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on roads. “Road safety is not everyone else’s

responsibility. It is yours. If you plan to have a drink, then plan not to drive. The risk of drinking and driving is just not worth endangering your life or those of other road users.” Before embarking on any driving trips drivers should check their tyres, windscreen washers, indicators, brakes and lights. Augustus Gelatery Werribee is Ciska Momesso’s happy place. Ciska was a stay-at-home mum before she and her husband decided to snap up the Watton Street gelatery, one of a franchise of 12 stores across Victoria, late last year. Create some memories this Christmas Christmas is a fun time of year, but for some people it can be very overwhelming, writes Alana Richards. With monster shopping lists, stretched finances, last-minute gifts and a lot of planning, time and effort going into making the day as wonderful and cheery for the family as possible, it can end up being exhausting. After a tumultuous year and drawing on the heightened sense of community the pandemic has created, this is the perfect year to do things a little differently and remember the real meaning of Christmas – the spirit of giving and spending time with loved ones. Here are some ideas to make this Christmas a little bit different …

Quality, not quantity Instead of exchanging gifts with friends, pick a night and go out for a relaxed dinner and overdue catch-up. Some quality time laughing and enjoying each other’s company easily trumps a token gift.

A brainstorming session for gifts can not only save you money, but gives you time to add a personal touch by creating something handmade (or getting the kids to), lets you space out your Christmas spend and avoids the last-minute ’that’ll do’ rush around the shops. If your gifts are sorted early, you’ll get to enjoy the fun of the Christmas lead-up instead of missing it.

Take it all in With the time saved avoiding some of the usual Christmas chaos, you’ll be able to take some time out to enjoy the festivities. Take the kids to see a light show, visit the Christmas windows or simply wander around a well-decorated part of your city and enjoy. A night-time Christmas tree hunt is timeless fun for all ages and there are plenty of Christmas-themed activities the kids can enjoy at shopping centres leading up to the big day.

Give a little lesson A reverse advent calendar is a fantastic way

to teach kids the value of giving at this special time of year. Ask kids to pick one of their toys to give away each day for one week, or for the month of December, and put it in a box. At the end, wrap up the box like a present and give it to a local charity or pop it under a wishing tree for the toys to be given to children in need. Another idea is to fill a sack with toys on Christmas Eve, leave them by the tree and let Santa do the rest. He’s popping by anyway, so being such a kind gesture, he won’t mind delivering the donation toys to children who will love them. Not only will your child feel good helping to make another child’s

Christmas special, it’s a great way to clean out some of the unused toys and give them to a worthy cause.

Play games and be merry Children are easily excited by Christmas, so catch a piece of their magic and join in the fun. Grab an Elf on the Shelf and watch the kids race to see what funny thing he’s doing each morning when they get up. Involve them in the treat-baking and present-wrapping, have a laugh and worry about the mess later. To you, it’s a task, but to them it’s Christmas – and that just makes everything exciting.

Rental law delay “the right move” REIV president Leah Calnan welcomed the Victorian government’s decision earlier this year to hold off on introducing changes to rental laws until next year, allowing the state to deal with coronavirus. Rental reforms were due to take effect on July 1 this year, which would have been difficult to implement while the real estate industry was dealing with the fallout of coronavirus.

In April, the Victorian government announced that it agreed that this year was not the best time for rental reforms and it would hold off for the time being. Ms Calnan said it was a sensible decision. “The … decision to delay the introduction of rental law changes was a huge relief to everybody in the Victorian real estate sector and allowed us to focus our full attention on

dealing with COVID-19,” she said. “Dealing with drastic changes to rental laws would have been impossible to manage when the industry was already dealing with significant increases in workload with reduced resources and income. The financial viability of real estate businesses was also heavily impacted at that time. “Everybody had enough on their plate;

delaying rental law changes was the right call. Delaying changes to the RTA helped protect VCAT from being further flooded with residential cases, creating an unnecessary backlog during the pandemic. “We congratulate the … government on listening to our industry and making the bold decision to delay rental changes which allowed us to … tackle the impact of the coronavirus.

The air scoops ahead of the rear wheels are beautifully integrated into the lower side panels and follow the shape of the doors. Altogether, the Lexus LC 500 Coupe is well-presented and executed.

Interior The dash area is neat and simple with large sporting instruments in a binnacle, a wide infotainment horizontal central screen, and there’s an elegant way the dash area is integrated with the far side of the car. A steering-wheel heater is now standard along with an ‘easy access’ front seat slide function to further aid front and rear seat ingress and egress.

Infotainment The LC 500 has a 10.3-inch display, enhanced voice recognition, satellite navigation with SUNA Live Traffic information, Lexus Enform connected mobility works with compatible Apple and Android smartphones. Setting that all off is Siri Eyes Free and Miracast. A bespoke Mark Levinson 13-speaker premium sound system was developed specially for the LC 500.

Engines / transmissions The 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine in the LC 500 mates with a revised transmission set-up to maximise responsiveness. Enhanced logic patterns for the LC 500’s 10-speed Direct Shift automatic means it upshifts at higher engine speed when 60 to 70 per cent throttle is applied. The LC 500h’s is now able to downshift to second gear (previously third) when braking in Sport S and Sport S+ modes to give more immediate acceleration.

Safety Lexus LC Lexus Safety System+ includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision safety system, lane keeping assist and sway warning.

There’s also blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic aler and reversing camera.

Driving For 2021 the front and rear coil springs have been strengthened and the shock-absorber lengthened. The standard Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) has been modified to improve linear response and control. Rear roll rigidity distribution has been revised, making it easier for the driver to feel the LC’s posture through corners and assist with more accurate line-tracing capability. The LC 500 now has Yamaha-developed performance dampers. Newly standard on LC is Active Cornering Assist (ACA), which utilises the vehicle stability

control to provide subtle braking of the inside wheels during high-G cornering, helping to create a natural and neutral cornering feel for the driver. The front seats are well shaped and provide support during cornering, but not to an excessive extent. This is after all a high-speed cruiser, not an out-and-out sportscar. Rear seats are a reasonable size but unless those in front are willing to power their seats a fair way forward there’s very little legroom. The 5.0-litre V8 is a real delight to sit behind. It has virtually instantaneous response. An exhaust sound-control valves gives it a healthy growl and a racecar like fast idle at start-up. We spent most of our time in the Sport and Sports+ plus modes as otherwise the LC feels too refined for our tastes. Handling is tenacious, with more grip than most owners are ever likely to want. There’s 52 / 48 per cent weight distribution for excellent balance. The feel through the steering is pretty good, though we have felt better in this class. Again, this might be because it’s a quick cruiser not a quick bruiser.

Summing up The first ever Lexus LC Convertible will come to Australia within the next few months and we’ve already got our name on the list to borrow one – can’t wait.

SPORT AFL draft dreams come true for Brand, Ford

Calder Cannons defender Cody Brand and Western Jets gun Eddie Ford were kept up late last Wednesday night, but it was worth it as both realised their AFL dreams. The draft went until nearly 11.30pm, keeping possible draftees and their families on tenterhooks well into the night. Brand, who was a Next Generation Academy [NGA] member with Essendon, had a few nervous moments when his name was called out at pick 53. The Western Bulldogs selected Brand, with Essendon able to have the opportunity to match the pick. After what seemed like an eternity, it was announced the Bombers had matched the bid for the defender. Speaking before the draft, Brand, who played for the Sunbury Lions, said playing for the Bombers would be a dream come true. “I grew up supporting Essendon and we’re an

Essendon family through dad’s bloodline,” he said. “It would honestly be a dream come true to play for the Bombers … but I’m open to any club. “Anywhere would be a dream come true for me to play the sport I love, and do it professionally at the highest level. I dreamt about it as a little kid running around the backyard.” Brand, a key defender, models his game on his mentor and Essendon legend Dustin Fletcher. Just three picks later, Ford’s name was called out by North Melbourne at pick 56. North national recruiting manager Mark Finnigan said they were excited to get Ford. “Eddie is an exciting forward who performed well on Grand Final day in 2019 in the Futures game,” Finnigan added. “He has speed, power and clean hands while having the ability to take a big mark and kick bags of goals.”

There were only 59 picks on the night. Earlier in the draft, two other Cannons found their way onto draft lists. Matt Allison, who played for Strathmore, is headed to St Kilda after being taken at pick 26. Josh Eyre, like Brand, was an NGA player with Essendon meaning the Bombers could match any bid on him. Richmond picked him at pick 39, with the Bombers quickly matching the pick. Eyre is a key forward from Kilmore, who moulds his game on Joe Daniher. Connor Menadue, who signed with Werribee for the 2020 season, gets a second chance on an AFL list after being taken by North Melbourne in the rookie draft. A winning partnership By Tara Murray Western United has shown its commitment to the growth of female soccer, forming a partnership with the top female team in Melbourne’s west, Calder United. Western United, which has applied for a W-League license for the 2022 season, will work with Calder United, sharing resources and expertise to grow participation in the sport and talent pathways for females of all ages. The partnership vision includes programs from juniors, through the transitional youth years and on to the high performing Women’s National Premier League (NPLW) in the hope of producing the next crop of young and senior Matildas, as well as forming the core of a future Western United W-League team. The Keilor Park-based Calder United claimed all three trophies on offer in 2019, winning the National Premier League women’s title, the Nike FC Cup and the 2019 Premiership. The club is committed to supporting FFA’s target of 50:50 male-to-female participation in the sport by 2027, and today’s announcement is a big step towards achieving that vision.” Calder United president Amanda Stella said the partnership would not only benefit her club, but other clubs in the west. She said discussions had started 18 months ago. “I’m very excited,” she said. “It’s about the full picture and Calder is at the forefront and will look to bring everyone on the journey. “Calder is looking forward to being able to continue with the development of female footballers while working closely with Western United to build a platform for the successful transition of players through mini Roos, NPLW and the W-League. “Western United is developing the female

space, before they have set up a boys [junior] space, which is a big tick for us. “What we’re doing with it, is putting female football on the map.” Ms Stella said there were no other programs like this in Victoria and she hoped it would be the start of something bigger. She said they had players who could match it with the international players who play in the W-League. Several Calder players have signed with Victory and City for the upcoming W-League season. “It makes sense and it’s a win-win situation,” she said. “It’s a uniformed approach and we’ll work with United to be the number one female team. “We’re producing players and the opportunities we can give them are getting better. “Other clubs and their coaches and players will be invited. The journey will be good.” Western United is also planning several on and off-field programs in the areas of women’s development and leadership, complemented by investments in female football employment and female community scholarships to be announced in 2021.

New Sunbury Lions coach Josh Burns is looking forward to finally getting the opportunity to coach in the Ballarat Netball League. Burns had been set to coach Melton this year and took the group through the first part of pre-season before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. When the club decided to head in another direction, Burns didn’t have to wait long to find another coaching role with Sunbury keen to get him onboard. Luke Marko Rawlings had been set to coach the Lions in 2020 for the first time. “They sought me out once they knew that I wasn’t coaching at Melton,” Burns said. “Renee Hulls [Lions coach and player] said to me about it and said that we would love to have you. “It was a nice easy-going process to get it done. Hopefully this great opportunity that will allow me to showcase my knowledge of the game.” The Melton job was Burns’ first experience in coaching, but he brings an extensive playing and umpiring background. He first made a state team at the age of 12 and played at a number of national championships. Burns also made four Australian teams, both indoor and full court netball, the most recent the under-23 men’s team four years ago. Burns’ coaches include City West Falcons coach Marg Lind and new Collingwood Super Netball coach Nicole Richardson. Burns said he had heard that Sunbury was in a development stage after several A grade players stepped away after the 2019 season when the club decided to change coaches. “There will be a lot of new faces, which will be good,” he said. Burns will also coach the B-grade team. Hulls, a premiership-winning coach at the club will coach C-grade, with Tami Hardwick appointed the D-grade coach. Janine Hodgson will coach the under-19s. An E-grade coach is still to be appointed. The Lions held the first of their trials at the weekend and have another one this Saturday between 10-1pm at Clarke Oval. Details: tamihardwick@gmail.com. Hatzoglou’s stunning rise It’s been a stunning rise for Peter Hatzoglou – he’s gone from playing for Sunshine Heights in division 3 in Victorian Turf Cricket Association in 2017, to being called up to the Melbourne Renegades squad. Hatzoglou had played just 10 first XI premier cricket games before being called up as a local replacement player for the Renegades first two matches. Speaking before the Big Bash got under way last week, Hatzoglou said he was excited about getting the opportunity to be with the squad. “It’s been a pretty crazy season really,” he said. “I went to Adelaide at the beginning of the season trying to get a gig over there and it’s all sort of happened quickly. “I got the call last week and was told to fly down from Adelaide as soon as you can. “I’d been talking with the Renegades and I was involved with South Australia in an emerging program, so I sort of felt like I was in and around the level … I was hoping it would come.

“Maybe it came a bit sooner than I thought it would.” Hatzoglou will be with the team for the first two games, but was unsure what would happen after that. He trained with the group for the first time last Tuesday, before practice matches the following day. He said he was looking to make the most of the opportunity. “To be honest, I feel like I’m ready to go out there and give it a real good go, if I do find myself lucky to get a game,” he said. “I’ll try and get a game in the Big Bash and try and lap that up as much as I can. If not, it’s still a great experience to get amongst guys the likes of Shaun Marsh, Benny Howell the list goes on. “At the minute it’s a two game thing, but I’m hoping it will potentially be more games, if not this season, next season.” This is the latest achievement in a crazy ride the past few years for Hatzoglou.

He moved to Melbourne University for the 2017-18 season and went from the fifths to be part of a third XI premiership. He was part of a second XI premiership the following season, before making his first XI debut last season as the club finished on top of the ladder. Hatzoglou said while he would have liked to have made his first XI debut earlier, he was able to learn from former Australian spinner Fawad Ahmed, who was the spinner in the first XI. “He has been enormous for me, he has helped me come such a long way so quickly.” This season, Hatzoglou and his brother Max have played with Prospect District in the South Australian Cricket Association Premier competition. Having been named in the Victorian emerging squad earlier this year, he has been given the opportunity to train with the South Australian emerging squad. “We’ve loved the whole move,” he said. Richardson’s super step By Tara Murray After thousands of hours developing netballers in Melbourne’s north-west, Nicole Richardson will coach the Collingwood Magpies Super Netball team. The City West Falcons and Altona Netball Association coach, who has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at the Magpies, will replace Rob Wright as coach. Richardson has represented Australia in both softball and netball and said she was excited by the challenge of coaching a club entrenched in Australia’s sporting culture. “I put myself in positions that if opportunity arose, I could look to put my hand up for a role like that,” she said. “I was fortunate enough to have two years working with West Coast Fever and I’m very grateful for them, backing a Victorian to come along into their coaching environment. “I’m then very grateful to Rob Wright and the Collingwood Magpies as an assistant coach. “Four years as an assistant coach across the two clubs, both those experiences I think have put me in a really good position to put a stamp on the Collingwood Magpies netball club.” The Magpies won just one game this year,

finishing bottom of the ladder in an unusual season. The competition was played in a hub in Queensland because of the coronavirus pandemic. Richardson said they were competitive, with the side losing four games by less than five goals. “I’m not hiding away from the fact that the results weren’t good enough, still a lot of work to be done, but there’s still a lot of positives to be taken out of the 2020 season,” she said. “In particular those young players who got some court time, particularly the likes of Molly Jovic who has come through the Altona Netball Association and City West Falcons, it was great to see her get her opportunity out on court and really flourish within the environment.” Richardson’s new role means an end to her time at the Falcons. She said it was a hard decision to move on from the club that she describes as a second family. But she will take much of what she learnt to the Magpies. “I’ve been fortunate enough to learn my craft under Marg Lind and the development that I’ve had in my coaching through the Falcons. “What I take from them is the winning culture that we have developed at City West Falcons … and being part of a family environment. “We’re really big on that and when I put

my case forward [to the Magpies] that was one of my big philosophies about developing a winning culture and developing those athlete-coach relationships. “That’s something that is embedded throughout the City West Falcons and I want to further that and extend that to the Magpies.” The Magpies started training earlier this month and Richardson said she was excited for the 2021 season. “You see the likes of Ashleigh Brazill coming back into the line-up and we’ve got Jacqui Newton, who has spent four years in the Vixens environment and has come from a very successful winning culture. “Kalifa McCollin is coming over and joining us from Trinidad and Tobago. I guess those three add a little flair to our line-up. [I’m] looking forward to seeing what they can do. “I think one difference between Collingwood and the rest of the teams this year, was we were up against teams that are rather established in combinations. For me, the exciting thing moving forward is we get to spend another year further developing these connections. “I want Collingwood Magpies to be the choice of clubs for Victorian athletes and fill a stadium, hopefully we can show the supporters an exciting brand of netball.”

Werribee coach Mark Williams is returning to the AFL system after accepting a role with Melbourne. The 2004 AFL premiership coach, who has been at Werribee the past two seasons, will become Melbourne’s head of football development. Williams said that he had loved his time at Werribee, which included leading them to the semi finals in 2019. “The club is strong, well-run and as we have all seen in the last year, resilient,” he said. “I thank the club and the community for making me feel like I could have stayed here for 20 years.” Werribee president Martin Carter said there were mixed emotions about Williams stepping away from the club. “Choco is unique in his way of thinking about football and the way he goes about engaging everyone to be part of that,” Carter said. “His impact at our club will resonate for a long time with coaches, players, staff, sponsors and supporters. “It is no surprise to see him back in the AFL system. We wish him well and thank him for everything he did in two very different years with us. “He planted the seeds of success both on and off field that his successor will be able to build on.” Werribee chief executive Mark Penaluna said the search for a new coach had already begun. “It is a prime job in the football world and one that offers outstanding opportunities to run your own team in an elite competition in the best facility outside the AFL, working in a club with an exceptional culture and strong community roots.” Werribee, which has started pre-season training, has announced a number of re-signings for the 2021 season, with the club competing in an expanded eastern seaboard state league competition. Longstanding skipper Michael Sodomaco leads that list, having signed on for an 11th year, while three-time club best and fairest winner Matt Hanson, 2019 VFL team of the year player Nick Coughlan, wingman Bior Malual and Kye Declase and former AFL ruckman Matthew Lobbe have also re-signed.
