Six pupils from Werribee Primary School are celebrating a top tech award. The youngsters, from the school’s robotics team, the Watt Wasps, competed in the Werribee Regional FIRST LEGO League Robotics Tournament last month and received two gongs –The Robot Design Award and The Robot Performance Award. The school’s leading teacher of ICT, Nathan Cuthbertson, said the pupils spent months preparing for the competition. The Watt Wasps, consisting of Jordi, Ku, Harnoor, Seril, Nathaniel and Owen, have progressed to the National Championships – South round, competing against teams from Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia, on Sunday. New police station push By Alesha Capone A Wyndham Vale father concerned about rising crime in the suburb is leading a push for a police station to built in the area. Kanwar Singh’s online petition, calling for a police station to be built in Wyndham Vale or Manor Lakes, has so far been signed by 585 people. The petition states that the area is “in need of a police station due to its increasing crime rate alongside its population growth”, and calls on the Victorian Legislative Council to request

Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville, Premier Daniel Andrews and Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton work together to build the police station. “Compared to previous years, the crime rate in Wyndham Vale has risen by 29.8 per cent and over the next 10 years the area is expected to register as having one of the highest growing populations in Victoria,” the petition states. “In both Wyndham Vale and Manor Lakes, thefts, assaults, burglaries and other forms of crime are on the rise with on-street crime comprising the majority of total incidents.”

Mr Singh said he moved to Wyndham Vale in 2017, and at the time felt the suburb was safe for children to play outside. But an assault and robbery at a local playground two months ago sparked a conversation between his friends about how “something needed to be done”. “The basic need is that everyone wants to be safe and we urge the government to support us by building a local station and putting more police in the area,” Mr Singh said. “More police would also result in more peace of mind for young families.”

Mr Singh hoped at least 1000 people would sign the petition and that a local politician would sponsor it in Parliament. A Victoria Police spokesperson said the community could be assured that there is “sufficient resourcing in the Wyndham area”. A government spokesperson said: “The Victorian government has provided more than $45 million to build a new 24-hour Wyndham Police Complex as part of the broader Wyndham Justice Precinct – one of the largest police facilities outside Melbourne. Extra weekday services on the Werribee line, which go to Newport but do not go through the Altona Loop, will run at least every 10 minutes for more than three hours in the morning and afternoon peaks. Most Werribee line trains will continue on to the Frankston line after arriving at Flinders Street station. To reduce overcrowding on weekdays, only two early services will stop at South Kensington station. Trains from Williamstown and Laverton will stop at South Kensington every 10 minutes during the morning peak instead.

The state government will introduce 60 new train services for the Werribee line, including 50 which will start or end at Laverton station. Ten of the new services, set to begin on January 31, will begin or terminate at Werribee station. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said 20 extra services would be added during the busy morning period and 40 new services in off-peak periods.

Weekend trains on the Werribee line will run directly to and from Flinders Street station and not via the City Loop. “Our new train timetable will improve reliability and flexibility – delivering a train at least every 10 minutes for Werribee line passengers during peak times,” Ms Connolly said. Forty-five new services have been added on the Geelong line, which services Tarneit, Wyndham Vale and Little River stations. This includes 20 new peak services per week between Wyndham Vale and Southern Cross stations, and an extra five services stopping at

Plenty of fun in Hollywood Mark Samual Bonanno has enjoyed every step of his journey from Werribee to Hollywood. Bonanno – a member of the comedy group Aunty Donna, along with Broden Kelly and Zachary Ruane – grew up in Wyndham Vale and Werribee. The trio’s six-part series, Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun, debuted on Netflix last month. The series features sketches, songs and a guest appearance by Weird Al Yankovic. Bonanno said the way the series started was “pretty nuts” after the group received an email from a Hollywood manager who had seen their YouTube videos.

“We were like, ‘Are we being catfished? Is this real?’” he said. For the next few years the trio visited Los Angeles while on tour and had a series of meetings with studios and production companies. Pacific Electric Picture Co – run by Edward Parker Helms, from television show The Office and The Hangover movies, and his production partner Mike Falbo – signed on to develop the program, which was picked up by Netflix. “We had to keep that secret for about two years,” Bonanno said. A 46-year-old woman has been charged with murder and arson causing death following a fire at a Point Cook home last week that claimed the lives of a young couple and their daughter. Abbey Forrest, 19, her partner Inderpal Sohal, 28, and their 19-day-old daughter Ivy were inside their Totem Way townhouse when the fire began about 3.40am last Wednesday. Arson and explosives squad detectives arrested a woman in Airport West on Thursday, charging her with three counts of murder and arson causing death. The woman was scheduled to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court that same evening but declined to make an appearance. The woman did not apply for bail and is due to face court again in March. Abbey’s sister, Emily Forrest, visited the scene of the fire last week, telling reporters that Abbey and Inda had only moved into the townhouse a few weeks ago after Ivy was born. “Their lives had pretty much just started and should be like the perfect time of their life and now this awful tragedy has happened,” Emily said. A GoFundMe appeal, launched by Emily to help raise money to cover the funeral costs, had raised more than $19,900 by Friday. New rules for a COVIDSafe summer Victorian pandemic restrictions have been eased until the end of January as part of a “COVIDSafe Summer” plan. Premier Daniel Andrews announced the changes, which came into effect at midnight on Sunday, at the weekend. Masks are now only required in a limited number of places, including on public transport, in rideshare vehicles and taxis, and some retail settings, such as indoor shopping centres, supermarkets and department stores. However, people must carry a mask with them whenever they leave home.

Victorians will be able to host up to 30 people in their home throughout the day. Outdoor gatherings in public places will increase to a maximum of 100 people. Density limits in pubs, restaurants and cafes will change to one person per two square metres for both indoors and outdoors. This will also apply to retail businesses, beauty services, nightclubs, libraries and RSLs. Mr Andrews said 50 per cent of office workers should be able to return to work by January 11, depending on public health advice at the time. Cedar Woods state manager Lloyd Collins

Summer asthma warning By Alesha Capone Healthcare experts have urged Australians with asthma to have an action plan in case their illness flares up this summer. According to Asthma Australia, more than 2.7 million Australians are living with asthma, but 71 per cent do not have an asthma action plan. Hoppers Crossing resident Melissa Cugley, who was diagnosed with asthma at the age of two, said her illness flared up during the 2019-20 bushfire season, when heavy smoke drifted over Melbourne. She also had to stop working as a nurse due to COVID-19, on her doctor’s recommendation. Ms Cugley compared asthma to “trying to breathe through a straw or trying to breathe with someone standing on your chest”. The 29-year-old was admitted to hospital earlier this year, after a cold caused her asthma to flare up. “Because of my symptoms I had to be placed in the COVID waiting room,” she said. “I didn’t have COVID and I was really scared I might catch it from someone in the ward,” she said. Ms Cugley said that when she was younger, her mother would pay $100 per month for her asthma medication. She said it was good to see new medications being added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme – such as Fostair, a combination therapy for adults with asthma, which was added to the PBS this month. Ms Cugley said that although asthma impacted her life, she was still able to keep active. In addition to being a Scouts and Girl Guides leader, she is in charge of the Victorian Olaves the Girl Guides Australia’s program for women aged 18 to 30 – and helps back stage at theatrical shows. “My advice for people with asthma is that there is always a way of doing the things you want to do, you just might have to do them differently,” she said.

Obey parking time limits: Mayor Wyndham council is asking motorists to obey parking time limits in the city centre, to help support local businesses as they emerge from COVID-19 restrictions. Mayor Adele Hegedich said: “We want to support local businesses who need on-street parking for customer turnover. “We’re urging the community to park within the suggested time limits to not only avoid the disappointment of receiving a fine, but more importantly to help our business community who rely on turnover of parking bays for their customers. “Let’s support our businesses together.” Cr Hegedich said that the less time people spent looking for a carpark, the longer they could spend visiting Wyndham’s “terrific” restaurants, cafes and stores. “We want to create vibrant city centres that provide great shopping and dining experiences for everyone,” Cr Hegedich said. “If you’re visiting our shopping centres for an extended period, try parking in an all-day parking area.” “There are plenty of car spaces for customers provided the workers don’t park there.” There are 2616 car parking spaces available within 500 metres of Werribee’s city centre, the equivalent of a 7.5-minute walk. Major off-street parking areas include the West End carpark on the corner of Watton Street and Werribee Street (with 182 all-day car spaces), the Riverbend carpark (181 car spaces with a two-hour limit) and the Cherry Street carpark (150 car spaces with a two-hour limit).

Thieves stole Christmas By Alesha Capone

Tributes for fire volunteer Tributes are flowing for long-serving Werribee Fire Brigade member Ken Heddle, who passed away this month. Mr Heddle, who served in the brigade for 57 years, died after a battle with illness. Mr Heddle joined the brigade as a junior member in 1961 and served in the CFA and MFB. He also volunteered at the Fire Services Museum for 25 years. Mr Heddle joined the Eaglehawk fire brigade after moving to the town in 2018. In September, he received a medal for his 60 years of service. At the time, Mr Heddle said his favourite part of being with CFA was the companionship with other members. Ex-Werribee CFA captain and Mr Heddle’s brother-in-law, Darryl Wells, served for many years alongside him. “When he was young, every time the siren went off, he was keen to see where the trucks went and visit the station from a young age,” Darryl said. “Ken also got involved in judging at firefighter competitions, became involved with various committees and ended up being track master for many regional and state competitions.” “Ken was above all a firefighter, he was outstanding in his service and absorbed as much information as he could,” Darryl said. Police are investigating the theft of an inflatable Christmas decoration from the front garden of a Hoppers Crossing house last month. Two men on a white scooter motorcycle rode past the Parkside Walk residence about 10am on November 26 snatching a large inflatable dog, with presents on its back, as they went. The scooter, with registration plates 1Z4FY, is believed to have been stolen from an address in Hoppers Crossing the day before. The rider was wearing black clothing and a black helmet. The passenger is described as Caucasian and was wearing black clothing and a red helmet. Investigators have released CCTV and an image of two men they believe will be able to assist with their inquiries. Shannon, a resident of the house from where the decoration was stolen, said his five year-old son was devastated by the theft. “He was pretty upset, it happened while he was at kindergarten,” Shannon said. Shannon said that his girlfriend had given the inflatable dog to his son as a gift. Shannon said he usually put up his Christmas decorations in December, but had decided to put them out early to help cheer up local children and families “after the year it’s been”. He has shared footage of the theft on a local Facebook group and it has received about 20,000 views in total. He said one kind person has offered to replace the inflatable dog. “I appreciate that offer no end, but I don’t want to take it away from someone else,” Shannon said. Police arrested five people after an allegedly stolen car was driven erratically and at high speeds across several suburbs in the west, before coming to a stop in Wyndham last Wednesday. Gifts that keep on giving Handmade blankets, toys and baby clothing are among the many items Kathy MacKendrick is selling to raise funds for the Werribee Hospital Foundation (WHF). Kathy has transformed a room of her home into a shop and is selling the items – which have been made by other WHF volunteers – from her house and via the Gumtree website. The items include animal print cushions, baby bootees for Christmas, beanies, children’s bedding, footy team items, jewellery, kitchen aprons and towels, knee and cot rugs, owl motif heat packs, peg aprons, macramé wall hangings, tote bags and toys. Kathy said she decided to sell the items on behalf of the WHF because she thought “it would be a nice thing to do for the community”.

“There are some lovely things at reasonable prices,” she said. “The toys would make a wonderful small gift.” Kathy, who has also volunteered for St Vinnies and other community causes, is legally blind. She said she wanted to inspire other blind people to pursue their passions. “I think it’s getting more and more important for people with a disability to know they can do all sorts of things and shouldn’t be overlooked,” she said. New waste contract Cleanaway Pty Ltd has taken over the collection of household garbage, recycling and garden organics in Wyndham this week. Wyndham council awarded the company a seven-year kerbside waste contract earlier this year. Trial’s heart health focus By Alesha Capone A not-for-profit medical research institute in Hoppers Crossing is looking for 400 senior citizens with type 2 diabetes to take part in an important study. The Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute opened its new Clinical Trial and Research Centre (CTRC) at HeartWest this year. Researchers at the centre are looking to recruit people aged 65 and over who have type 2 diabetes for a trial involving the prescription medication Dapagliflozin. Dr Amera Halabi, who is based at the CTRC, said the medication lowered blood sugar levels in people with diabetes and reduced their risk of kidney decline and failure. However, the trial will examine the medication’s impact on preventing heart failure in the early stages of diabetes. The study could have important implications for the more than 1.5 million Australians living with type 2 diabetes. Dr Halabi said the study, which will run for two years, would give participants either the medication or a placebo pill. Dr Halabi said the CRTC hoped to use clinical trial facilities at Sunshine Hospital for the study. She said one of the good things about the study was that all volunteers received a free echocardiogram to ascertain any early stages of heart failure. She said most people would not undergo such a test unless they displayed symptoms of heart disease, but that patients benefited from early diagnoses of such conditions. Dr Halabi said anyone feeling apprehensive about taking Dapagliflozin could be reassured that it was already an “established therapy” approved for use in Australia.

Trial participant, 72-year-old Gisborne resident John Dunlop, said he and his wife Judy previously participated in another Baker Institute study. Mr Dunlop said he liked participating in the study because of how professional the researchers were. “It’s been great, I would highly recommend it

Concern over law change The Opposition and Police Association of Victoria have raised concerns about the state government’s plan to decriminalise public drunkenness. According to the Crime Statistics Agency, more than 4000 people were arrested for being drunk and disorderly in public across Victoria in 2019-20. In the 12 months to June this year, 105 people were arrested in Wyndham for being drunk and disorderly in public. Brimbank recorded 122 such offences, Maribyrnong 66 offences, Melton 35 offences and Hobsons Bay 34 offences. An expert panel, including police and Indigenous representatives, last week tabled a report recommending that outreach workers, or drug and alcohol workers, should be the first responders when someone is found intoxicated in public, rather than police. The state government has committed to decriminalising public drunkenness before next year. In response, the Opposition said the Victorian government “was putting the cart before the horse by rushing out proposed reforms”. Opposition spokesman for Police and Community Safety David Southwick said the plans “failed to address key stakeholders’ serious community safety concerns”. The Police Association of Victoria labelled the decriminalisation plan “all press release and no policy”. Alesha Capone

Wyndham council will launch a pop-up retail space in Werribee for local creatives, designers and artists to showcase their products next year. The MADE on Watton pilot project will transform a vacant store at 90 Watton Street into a curated, market-style experience featuring hand-made textiles, stationery, ceramics, homewares and jewellery. As well as supporting local creatives hit hard by COVID-19, the short-term project is part of the council’s efforts to bring people back to the Werribee city centre and “reactivate” its retail spaces. Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said MADE on Watton will also give shoppers a unique shopping experience, where they could meet and buy directly from amazing local designers and makers. “We know that our local creative industry has been hit hard during COVID-19, and it has been particularly challenging for those emerging artists and designers who would normally do their businesses through markets and stalls,” Cr Hegedich said. “That’s why this summer, Wyndham City will create an innovative pop-up retail space in Werribee city centre to give a leg up to Wyndham makers, designers and artists. “MADE – which stands for Makers, Artists, Designers and Entrepreneurs – is an opportunity to celebrate local artisans, showcase their creations, and give them the opportunity to test their product in a commercial environment.” Expressions for interest are now open for stallholders at www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/ madeonwatton

Wyndham council is calling on the community to help shape the municipality’s future by helping to refresh the Wyndham 2040 Community Vision. Developed in 2016, the vision is an aspirational document that details what the community wants Wyndham to be like in the coming decades, encompassing everything from parks to the arts, education, tourism, the local economy, community services, road projects and more. Wyndham chief executive Kelly Grigsby said that as the area enters a new council term, it was important to review the vision “to ensure that it still reflects the needs of the different places and diverse people which make up Wyndham”. “The past four years have seen many changes in the way we all live, work and play – particularly due to COVID-19 – and the Wyndham 2040 Community Vision needs to factor in this shift in our lifestyle and values,” Ms Grigsby said. Seniors enjoy benefits of exercise Exercise parks built specifically for senior citizens, including one located at the Central Park Community Centre in Hoppers Crossing, can significantly improve older people’s physical and mental health, according to a new study. Research carried out by the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) has found that the exercise parks, which are also located in Thomastown and St Helena, help seniors to sustain these health improvements in the long-term. As part of the study, 80 people aged 60 years and older underwent a three-month structured, supervised physical activity program using the Seniors Exercise Park equipment, which has been designed for older people. This was followed up with six months unstructured, independent use of the exercise parks. Participants were assessed when they started out, at three months and nine months and were evaluated for physical activity, physical function and health-related quality of life measures. At three months, many participants recorded significant increases in physical activity levels, physical function, self-rated quality of life, and wellbeing. They also had a reduced fear of falls, less depressive symptoms and felt less lonely. NARI Professor Pazit Levinger said participants in the ENJOY Seniors Exercise increased their physical activity levels “from sedentary to being sufficiently active to gain health benefits”. “The excellent physical gain benefits we saw at three months were sustained at the nine-month mark,” Professor Levinger said.

“People continued to use the exercise park without a supervised program. “Not only were they motivated, they enjoyed the equipment and the socialising opportunities. “This sustained engagement provides promising results for the potential benefits of scaling up the ENJOY program to reach a greater number of older people.” Professor Levinger said there was “very little public outdoor exercise equipment suitable for older people” in Australia. “But our research shows when you create accessible outdoor environments … they will participate. ‘Heroic’ staff hailed By Alesha Capone Emergency department staff at Werribee Mercy Hospital have been presented with an award for their “heroic” efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lalor MP Joanne Ryan presented the ED workers with a Lalor Hero Award for 2020. The annual award recognises people who make a contribution, or provide a service, to the federal Lalor electorate community. Emergency department nurse unit manager Lynn O’Neill said that while the award was a tremendous honour, every Mercy Health staff member deserved the recognition, not just those who work within the ED. “We stepped up to the plate, and we know that, but equally we are proud and humbled by the response and gratitude we received from the community,” Ms O’Neill said. Ms Ryan said Werribee Mercy Hospital (WMH) has built a great rapport with residents not only in Wyndham, but across the west. She said the hospital staff were worthy recipients of the award. “Given the year we’ve endured, and the significance of the hospital’s role, it was not difficult to choose the emergency department as the award’s first recipient,” Ms Ryan said. “It’s well documented that Melbourne’s west was a hotspot during the peak of COVID-19 but the community was protected by WMH. “From all reports, the treatment was well above par and was everything it was meant to be.” Werribee Mercy Hospital emergency department director John Pasco said COVID-19 had generated “outstanding cohesion amongst staff“. “We understood the battle we faced and appreciated how important it was to work as a team,” Dr Pasco said

“It was a tremendous team effort.” In October, Mercy Health Group chief executive Stephen Cornelissen said that Werribee Mercy Hospital could have been “brought to its knees” during the COVID-19 pandemic if it were not for the efforts of “heroic” frontline staff.

“At its height, the second wave of this terrible pandemic added extraordinary pressure and danger,” Adjunct Professor Cornelissen said. “Our team’s bravery and the support of their families who watched workers return to work each day can never be understated or permitted to be forgotten.”

Fire danger period nears The official fire danger period will begin in Wyndham, Melton, Hume and Whittlesea on Monday. The fire danger period will begin at 1am in the four areas, which are all in the CFA’s North West Region. The latest Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for Victoria, released on November 26, said that due to significant grass growth, 2020-21 “has the potential to be more of a grassfire-dominated season”. CFA District 14 acting assistant chief fire officer Paul Elso said “fire potential is only going to increase with the warmer weather over the next three months”. Mr Elso said that once the fire danger period comes into effect, the CFA will have a zero-tolerance approach to any fires caused by negligent behaviour. “Expect any escaped or uncontrolled fire you start to be investigated by CFA and Victoria Police,” he said. During the fire danger period, fires must not be lit in the open air without a permit from the CFA or a Municipal Fire Prevention Officer. A permit is required to burn off grass, undergrowth, weeds or other vegetation. Lighting a fire in the open without a permit is an offence and can incur a penalty of more than $19,000 and up to 12 months imprisonment. Barbecues and fires for cooking and warmth do not require a permit, but must be lit in properly-constructed fireplaces. All burn-offs should be registered with the VicFire Burn-off notification line on 1800 668 511.

A new dining experience Part of Watton Street will be transformed into an alfresco dining precinct at the weekend, with food available from 15 different venues. Wyndham council’s West End Experience will transform the street, between the Bridge Hotel and Wedge Street, with outdoor dining furniture, umbrellas, greenery and comfortable spots to relax. A Wyndham Cultural Centre pop-up, live tunes from local musicians, neon artworks from Carla O’Brien and sparkling festoon lighting will complete the experience. Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said the West End Experience was one of several council initiatives aimed at supporting businesses after the devastating effects of COVID-19 restrictions. “As restrictions continue to ease, Wyndham City is working with businesses to make it as easy as possible to welcome people safely back to our city centres, while meeting social distancing and density requirements,” Cr Hegedich said. “When local Werribee businesses came to us with the idea for the West End Experience, we were excited by the opportunity to pilot this new outdoor dining concept. Across the world, cities have embraced new modes of alfresco dining and here in Wyndham we want to make it as easy and as practical as possible for businesses to be able to bring the café and restaurant experiences we love, outside.” Participating local restaurants include the Bridge Hotel, Truckstop Deluxe, Ages Pizza Place, Mama Lor, Teddy Picker and Corked. Road, rail disruptions Residents of the west have been advised to factor in extra travel time this summer as work on Victoria’s Big Build continues. Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan and Werribee MP Tim Pallas announced the “summer disruption timetable” in Werribee last month. While in the suburb, they said the Werribee Street level crossing removal project is more than a year ahead of schedule. Annual maintenance on the West Gate Bridge will take place from Boxing Day until January 6, with three of the five outbound lanes to be closed and overnight closures impacting inbound lanes. The West Gate Freeway will close in both directions at Grieve Parade between January 6-11. Inbound M80 traffic will be detoured, as crews on the West Gate Tunnel project demolish the southbound bridge before rebuilding and strengthening it. For six weeks, from Monday, January 11, both inbound and outbound ramps from the Princes Freeway to Geelong Road and the M80 inbound ramp to the West Gate Freeway will also be closed. Buses will also replace trains on the Werribee and Williamstown lines from February 26 to March 3 between North Melbourne and Newport/Williamstown stations, including on the Altona Loop. Standing up with women By Goya Dmytryshchak The photo of AFLW star Tayla Harris’s famous airborne kick, at first attracting trolls and now immortalised with a bronze statue, is a prime example of how things can be turned around. Men across Melbourne’s west are sharing their stories of what it means to be an “ally” in the fight against gender-based violence in a YouTube video created by Victoria University. VU sports historian Matthew Klugman, features in the video, Tips for Allyhood: Working together to end violence against women. He recalls one instance of standing up for a female student at an overseas conference. “A student was giving a presentation at a conference and a big name in the field really harangued her at the end of it and no one did anything,” Dr Klugman said. “So, I went and spoke with her and asked if it was OK if I followed it up and she was OK with that. And then I went and spoke with him. “It didn’t seem something that he would have done to a young man and it had clearly shaken her. It was pretty appalling.” Dr Klugman said there were aspects of masculinity that men needed to work on. “We see it in terms of people at sports events saying, ‘You kick like a girl’ or the various insults that might be called at male players, such as ‘pussy’,” he said. “I tell my students that if they want to get a sense of how unequal the world is, just look at social media and look at the way people react to female athletes as opposed to male athletes. “Tayla Harris is a great example. A classic kicking action, beautiful kick, wonderful photo by Michael Wilson, and all these people come and start making crass, sexist comments demeaning it.” The video features men talking about the

meaning of “allyhood” and emphasise that it doesn’t mean being a “white knight” and standing up for women, but rather “standing up with women”. “It’s not asking men to ride in and save the day, it’s asking them to start doing work in various ways but a key part of that work being listening,” Dr Klugman said. Two schools in Werribee will receive funding to deliver upgrades under the state government’s Minor Capital Works Fund. Wyndham Park Primary School will receive $262,165 and Thomas Chirnside Primary School $66,120, to upgrade their playgrounds. The upgrade projects are set to commence early next year. Werribee MP Tim Pallas last week announced the funding would be fast-tracked as a priority project to support local jobs. “We are making sure that students in Werribee have access to the best school facilities and a great education,” Mr Pallas said. Mr Pallas also announced the state government would provide $54,500 to help the Werribee Coast Guard improve its Werribee South facilities. The Werribee Coast Guard is one of 125 projects sharing in $20 million from the Emergency Services Refurbishment Fund. The fund aims to help volunteer emergency services agencies to carry out urgent maintenance and upgrades of their existing facilities and provide support to Victorian businesses affected by the downturn in the economy. The volunteer agencies which receive funding will engage businesses from their local communities to undertake the upgrade work and to supply equipment and materials.

Pokies bid rejected by VCAT By Alesha Capone Plans for a $56 million entertainment venue in Truganina, which would have included 80 gaming machines, have been knocked back by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). As reported by Star Weekly, Truganina Metropolitan Pty Ltd was seeking permission to build a seven-storey integrated entertainment and commercial venue on the corner of Leakes and Palmers roads, along with a serviced apartment hotel and residential building, a 200-seat bistro and more than 270 carparks.

Rugby league club Melbourne Storm would have operated the venue. In their judgement earlier this month, VCAT presiding member Picha Djohan and member Cindy Wilson found there was an “absence of net community benefit” in the proposal. They said that the proposed gaming venue and electronic gaming machines were contrary to Wyndham council’s electronic gaming policy, noting that new gaming machines were “discouraged” in locations where the social and economic locational context was still emerging, and the impact of a gaming venue could not be accurately determined.

Although the planning application was exempt from public notice, due to Urban Growth Zone provisions, Wyndham council received objections to the proposal from residents and Hobsons Bay council. Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said the VCAT decision was a victory for residents. “Gaming machines do more harm than good,” Cr Hegedich said. “This decision sends a clear message that Wyndham opposes additional gaming machines in areas where there is already financial vulnerability. “This is particularly relevant in the wake of COVID-19, where many of our residents have

been significantly impacted in both a financial and social sense. “Wyndham City was the eighth-highest Victorian municipality for gambling losses in 2018–2019. Seddon’s Lay Low Bar and Seagulls Laundromat say they will continue the inventive business cocktail, which was born of necessity during the COVID-19 crisis. Seagulls owner Fabrizio De Cesaris started operating a laundry delivery service at the front of 93 Buckley Street with the bar at the rear. “We’ve … put a counter at Seddon so people can pick up and drop off their laundry, ironing, dry cleaning at the front of … the same premises that Lay Low Bar do their cocktails,” he said. “We were doing the deliveries for Lay Low and Lay Low Bar would organise a Zoom cocktail party between three or four different households. Some of the customers would also

engage us to do their laundry.” Lay Low owner Colin Wood said it was a “perfect match”. “We had the space at the front – we used to run a cafe in there and of course with COVID that was closed down,” he said. “What we started doing through the bar was a lot of take-out and home delivery cocktails. “So, the perfect match was Fab and his guys are out in vans all day delivering laundry and shirts … He was looking to expand the business up into the northern and western suburbs and it all came together at the right time. “You would get your shirts dropped off with your negroni or your espresso martini. “Now, you can drop your laundry off, go for a cocktail, or have your laundry and your cocktails delivered.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Naturally, as we watched the suburb grow and office space continue to be delivered, it seemed sensible to be able to work close to home. The office space being new with great facilities is important, as well as being easily accessible for clients to be able to get to us, and for us to be easily able to reach our clients in Melbourne and Geelong. I love being able to walk to work each day and see the people I live around. What do you like about being based in Williams Landing? This is the first office for the business and I own the office space. It’s a corner office in 101 Overton Road and I have beautiful views of the You Yangs, the Dandenong Ranges and the bay. I really love the location, and it works for my clients. The area is still in its infancy but I expect it to grow and become a real hub. I live about a 15-minute walk from the office. Get your Christmas binge on The holiday season is upon us and ‘tis the time for many traditions, including binge-watching the same old Christmas films we know and love. But which classic makes us feel the most Christmassy? Interested in finding the films that fill us with the most festive spirit, the experts at OnBuy. com created a Christmas film Index. They set a points-based system where each festive element in the movies, such as the number of Christmas trees and how many times Santa appears, would earn a point (from 1 to 3) based on how Christmassy they are. Using this points-based system, at the end of the study, OnBuy.com was able to crown the most Christmassy film of all time.

The results Starring Jim Carrey, How the Grinch Stole Christmas is crowned the most Christmassy film of all time with 586 points. The film scored the most points (50) for Christmas outfit appearance and presents appearance (66 points) out of all the considered films. Although the word Santa is said 11 times, adding 22 points to the scoreline, and the classic down the chimney scene occured four times (adding 8 points), the only Christmas element that the film didn’t score points on was Santa Claus appearance – if we don’t count Grinch dressing up in Mrs. Claus’ clothes. The second place revealed that there’s no Christmas story more Christmassy than Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch (2018), scoring 484 points. With an animated version of Mr Grinch dubbed by Benedict Cumberbatch, the film got the highest points for Christmas food appearance (15 points), carol singers appearance (4 points),

film of all time is the musical White Christmas. Its highest score is 19 points for the number of times the word Christmas is said. The five Christmas songs (15 points) also disappoint and aren’t quite what we would expect from a Christmas musical.

“Cowardly misuse of parliamentary privilege” was how Mr Doug Rathhone, manager of Nufarm Chemicals, Laverton North described Dr. Ken Coghill’s speech to Parliament recently, in relation to Nufarm. Mr Rathbone claimed that Dr Coghill was misusing Parliament to say things he could not say outside it for fear that he would have to justify them.

A proposal to build a multi-cinema complex, three restaurants, café, bar and amusement centre at the Werribee Plaza has been rejected by the Ministry for Planning and Urban Growth. Werribee Council has also rejected the proposal because it had no option but to go with the minister’s decision.

Wyndham council has provided police with a list of Work for the Dole participants employed on environmental projects around the city to aid the investigation into the poisoning of up to 100 peppercorn trees. The trees, many along the Werribee River, died after one centimetre diameter holes were drilled around their base and a herbicide poured into their stumps.

Police have charged two people over a fire which destroyed a $3 million Werribee school hall. Last Monday’s blaze caused $1.2 million damage to the gymnasium at Manorvale Primary School.

Subaru BRZ 2012 - 2019 By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Subaru BRZ is a full-on sportscar that’s delightful to drive. It has real RWD handling, excellent throttle control and steering that talks to you. It’s just perfect for early morning Sunday drives on your favourite bits of road. The Subaru is offered with a six-speed manual or an auto with the same number of forward ratios. The auto is a good one – but simply not in the class of a ‘real’ gearbox. The engine features Subaru’s trademark four-cylinder boxer layout and has a capacity of 2.0 litres. It puts out a neat 200 horsepower (147 kW) in its original format. Engine power is nothing to get excited about and even when revved to the heavens you don’t get a huge amount of hard acceleration. This is fine with us, we enjoy the skill of getting the best from a car by having it in the right gear from moment to moment. The BRZ first went on sale Down Under in July 2012. Anticipating a huge demand Subaru Australia made the interesting move of selling it only on the internet. It took just over three hours for a complete sellout of the initial shipment. After that initial burst of sales the BRZ eventually went on sale in dealerships. New car prices were lowered over the years as the ‘newkid-on-the-block’ excitement faded and sales dropped to more normal levels. The front seats are low and may prove awkward for some to get down into. But once you’re in there they’re firm, but comfortable, with good leg and headroom. Though the BRZ has four seats rear legroom is very cramped, indeed it’s non-existent when the front seats are all the way back. Boot space is reasonable although Subaru Australia opted for a full-size spare wheel,

which takes up a huge amount of space. If ever a car needed a space saver wheel it’s the BRZ. A BRZ S pack by Subaru Tecnica International (STI) was offered from mid 2013. It features lowered suspension; a body kit consisting of a front spoiler, rear diffuser and spoiler, and side skirts. It rides on 17-inch black alloy wheels. Inside there’s a Duracon gear knob on manual boxes. The engine gains a push-button start with the large button done in brilliant red. Subaru BRZ S pack was only available to new-car buyers, it could not be retrofitted. So it may become a sought-after model in years to come and even go up in price. No promises, though. Late in 2016 BRZ received minor design tweaks, another six horsepower and revised suspension tuning. Exterior changes included LED headlights and taillights, a wider and lower bumper design and new-design 17-inch alloy wheels. Inside there’s optional red stitching and

BRZ embossing on the front seats, modified instruments and a new steering wheel. Incidentally, Toyota also makes a version of the Subaru BRZ, called the 86. It’s built in the Subaru factory and has a Subaru engine, albeit with some Toyota fuel injection components and a different tune.

The engine should start easily and idle smoothly. If it doesn’t, get a dealer to check it as there were timing and injection problems in some earlier BRZs. The clutch should take up smoothly, if it doesn’t it might be near the end of its life.

How much? What to look for Check for a full service record, ideally from a Subaru dealer. Has the BRZ been thrashed, either legally at track days or illegally in street racing? A roll-cage is a clue, as are signs of one having been removed. Extra instruments may be for show, or intended to keep track of constant hard work during races. Unevenly worn tyres are a giveaway, as are damaged rims. Lowered suspension is easy to spot.

Expect to pay from $8000 to $12,000 for a 2012 Subaru BRZ; $13,000 to $19,000 for a 2014 BRZ; $15,000 to $22,000 for a 2014 BRZ S; $17,000 to $24,000 for a 2015 Premium; $18,000 to $25,000 for a 2018 BRZ; $19,000 to $25,000 for a 2016 SE; $22,000 to $30,000 for a 2018 tS; and $25,000 to $33,000 for a 2019 tS.

SPORT Registration fee invoices anger soccer clubs More than 80 community soccer clubs are calling on Football Victoria to withdraw invoices issued for registration fees for the 2020 season. Football Victoria (FV) sent clubs invoices asking them to pay registration fees despite most players not getting on the pitch due to COVID-19. In a letter to Football Victoria, the clubs state the request to pay registration fees isn’t justified as some of the clubs had withdrawn from the season, while for others the season didn’t go ahead. The letter states clubs had endured a lack of payments and income this year, had issued refunds to members and incurred other costs. Clubs from Whittlesea, Hume, Macedon Ranges, Moorabool, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Wyndham are among the group of 80. Bundoora United president and group

spokesman Andrew Kyriazis said there had been a lack of correspondence from Football Victoria about their concerns. He said clubs were being asked to pay about $60 per player, with invoices of between $3000 and $30,000. “We’re being held to ransom,” he said. “It started with a group of 10 presidents and now there’s 80 clubs. We sent an email on November 23 and called for a face-to-face meeting to come up with an amicable solution. “We sent a follow-up email, but there was a lack of any acknowledgement. “So many clubs are suffering … We’ve incurred expenses and had no income. “We do not have money for everything else until we get rego fees from next year.” Kyriazis said that under the Football Victoria registration system, players can either pay the registration fee straight to FV or via a club,

which then passes it on. Players are entered into a system and clubs have to accept them, but Kyriazis said no players had been accepted because teams were withdrawn. FV has accepted all players on the clubs’ behalf, leaving them liable for the registration fee. If fees aren’t paid, players are unlikely to be allowed to play next season. United gave its members the option of having fees refunded or rolled over to 2021. Other clubs only gave members the option to roll their fees over, because they didn’t have the money to offer a refund. “We are one of the largest clubs in the north-west with 500 juniors,” Kyriazis said. “We made the decision with the board it was too risky to play and pulled out of the competition before it had even started. Most of our members took the option to get a refund. We had families who couldn’t afford groceries,

Titans return to the field By Tara Murray After the longest ever off season, the North Western Titans were thrilled to return to the field at the weekend in Baseball Victoria Summer League. With COVID-19 putting an end the Titans’ winter season even before it started, the Titans were finally able to return to the diamond for training about a month ago. There was a sigh of relief at the weekend, as their men’s, women’s and juniors teams all played opening round matches. President and coach Danny Haymes said everyone was excited to be back. “After not being able to play the winter season, everyone has a spring in their step,” he said. “We’ve been training since we’ve been allowed, with everyone wanting to get back out there and socialise.

“It’s been a hard seven months for a lot of people.” Haymes said they entered the new season pretty buoyant about the hopes of all their sides. The men’s side will again play in division 3. “We have recruited well,” he said. “We’ve added three guys from different clubs and we’ve had a couple of people that have rolled up which is nice. “We’re picked up blokes that live on this side of the city.” Most pleasing for Haymes is some of their junior players starting to step up and progress through the ranks. It’s something they’ve worked on the past few years and it’s starting to come to fruition. “Three juniors played on the weekend after coming through the ranks. “It means I can play in the second grade and a few other older guys are also going back into the second grade as well. “That is the plan that we wanted to do.” The club’s women’s side is hoping to build on a finals appearance in division 3 west. It was a brilliant season for the Titans, who won their first game ever early in the season and continued to build on that. Haymes said the women’s side would be slightly different to past seasons. “We’ve lost a little bit of experience due to work commitments and COVID-19. “We’ve had some new players as well, so we’re still expecting to be competitive as we have the core group back. 30 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 9 December, 2020

Storm stuns Saints Sydenham-Hillside upset St Albans in the opening round of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association T20 competition. The Storm, division 3 premiers last season, were able to hold off last season’s senior premiers on Tuesday night in the Border group. This year there are three teams in each pool group based on location, instead of four like last season, meaning one team has a bye each round. The Storm batted first and made 6-125. Gayashan Weerasekara finished 58 not out, with Ben Green making 23. The Saints fell just short, finishing 7-110. Greenvale Kangaroos beat Westmeadows in the Ponsford group. The Kangaroos made 6-120 before restricting Westmeadows to 9-108. Last season’s runners-up, Sunbury is also in that pool group. Spotswood started with a win against Altona Roosters in the Simpson group. The Roosters made 9-128 with a number of starts from the top and middle order batsmen. Captain-coach Ash Peters top scored with 28. Spotswood’s top three got the job done as they finished 1-129 off 15.3 overs. Declan O’Brien top scored with 55 not out. In the Morris group, Keilor Park came out on top against the more highly fancied Strathmore by 10 runs. The Devils made 7-144 with a half century to Ethan McShanag. Strathmore fell just short, making 5-134. Chris Williams made 50 for Strathmore. Grand United had a good win against Aberfeldie Park in the Paine group. Grand United made 9-126 with Ross Romeo taking two wickets. Grand United was able to restrict Aberfeldie Park to 9-81. Airport West St Christophers defeated Aberfeldie, while West Coburg and Haig Fawkner’s match was called off due to a soft pitch. Many round one matches were played over the previous few weeks. Royal Park Brunswick defeated Jacana, St Francis de Sales beat Pascoe Vale Central, Sunshine United beat Sunshine YCW, Seddon got over the line in a thriller against Yarraville Club and Sanctuary Lakes easily accounted for Footscray Angliss. Familiar face returns to Williamstown There’s a sense of familiarity for new Williamstown coach Justin Plapp. Appointed in late November, Plapp returns to the club where he was an assistant coach in 2011. With many of the same faces still around, Plapp is excited to return. “I said to the guys it seems familiar for me,” he said. “There’s still a lot of the people at the club from when I coached in 2011. The fabric that makes the club tick. “I know Stephen Soulsby and Jason Reddick from an admin side. We crossed paths when I was with Casey. “I’ve dealt with some of the players and have some relationships. “Some of the volunteers have been around the club for a long time. “I’m nervous about the role, but in a good way. I’m going into this role with a lot of clarity and a real confidence.” Plapp has been busy coaching since he left the Seagulls at the end of 2011, including stints as

head coach at NAB League club Sandringham Dragons and senior coach with VFL side Casey Demons. The past three seasons he has been an assistant coach with Melbourne. Having spent four and half months in Queensland with Melbourne for the AFL season, Plapp used the time to reconsider his football future. “I was in a position to make a decision on what I wanted to do,” he said. “I have a young family and spent four and half months away from them. I had time to reflect on what is important to me. “It’s family and to balance those two things is really important to me. AFL can take you away from a lot of that.” One of the things that attracted Plapp to the Williamstown role was being able to coach a stand-alone side. The Casey Demons are aligned with Melbourne. “I’ve been involved with an alignment and enjoyed it and it was good for my development,”

Plapp said. “This is the challenge of developing my own side. I’m 42 now and I want to embrace the program and what I believe in, which is exciting. “My time at the VFL level, I’ve seen Williamstown is really respected and has a proud history. “I hear nothing but good things. “Collo [Andy Collins] has done a fabulous job and I’ll embrace it, evolve and improve it.” Plapp comes on board as the VFL enters a new phase, with the club to play in an expanded eastern seaboard competition. For now he is working on a coaching panel and putting the list together. “We’ve retained a lot of players from last year and they will play an important role,” he said. “We’ve got a few spots to fill. We’ll let what happens in the draft play out. “We’re happy with where the list is at.” Tara Murray

Tsapatolis inks deal By Tara Murray There’s a massive sense of relief for Paul Tsapatolis after signing with Geelong as a B-category rookie. For most of his life Tsapatolis has been focused on his basketball career, with college or playing overseas beckoning. But in recent years he realised that wasn’t the dream and for the past eight months has been talking to AFL clubs about making the transition to football. He spent time in both Adelaide and Sydney this year training with clubs, but it was Geelong – just a 30-35 minute drive from home at Point Cook – that won his signature. “It was just pretty much everything,” he said of picking Geelong. “The connection I had with the club, and how they displayed their trust in one another. Not even to do with me. Stephen Wells, their recruiting manager, trusted Troy Selwood [talent ID manager] to deal with me for eight-odd months.

“They were smooth with the process and didn’t force me to do anything. It just felt right in the heart and it’s the best feeling ever.” Tsapatolis admits there were a few tears when he received his heads of agreement, with the contract for two years. After receiving his deal, Tsapatolis has been busy working at the club ahead of the pre-season starting this week. Having not played football since under-13s at Yarraville-Seddon, Tsapatolis knows that he has a lot of work ahead of him. “I’ve been training for two-odd weeks now, doing my own thing and getting a feel of it,” he said. “I’ve been training with [assistant coach] Shaun Grigg a bit and Cam Taheny, it has been good to get some sessions. “It’s about just getting better every day and there’s amazing resources at the club, so there’s no excuse not to get better.” He said while some players were still interstate after the AFL season, he had spoken to most of the playing group. Skipper Joel Selwood is among those who have given him some advice. “He has been good and gave me a call the day it happened,” he said. “He still comes up to me at the gym and asks if i’m enjoying it. “A few of the rookies have sent me messages as they know what it is like being a first year player. “Tom Hawkins came up to me today and said you will love it. He said just do all the little

things, same as Joel Selwood. They said do all the little things, work hard and have fun and the results will take care of itself.” Tsapatolis said in his early days he thinks he will be played in a combination of ruck and forward and has his eyes on a full-time ruck

spot in the next few years. For now, his focus is on improving. “Obviously I want to play senior games, but that’s out of my control and more up to the coaches. I’ll do everything I can to get into a position for a senior spot.”

Boldiston back coaching A year without netball left new Riddell coach Adam Boldiston keen to get back into coaching. A premiership-winning coach with the Sunbury Lions in the Ballarat Netball League, Boldiston was set to coach Romsey in this year’s Riddell District Netball League season but was forced to pull out before the season started because of other commitments. In a twist of fate, the season didn’t go ahead because of COVID-19. Now Boldiston is “putting my hat back in the ring”. “Over the break I found myself really missing netball. I thought I would contact Loz [Lauren Close] as Riddell was a bit closer,” he said. “They had someone signed for this season but couldn’t commit to the role next year. “Last year Loz said if she had known I was looking for a new role, she would have been keen for a chat. “It’s now worked out that way.” Boldiston and Close have played together previously at state and national level. He said he was thrilled to have an opportunity to reunite. Close is one of a number of signings that the Bombers have already announced. Star shooter Bec Cowell returns, while Ellen Close and Tara O’Grady will also be in the shooting end. Chelsea Tobin has also re-signed. Boldiston said he had tried to get Colwell to his previous teams in the past and was looking forward to finally getting to coach her. While he hadn’t coached Ellen Close before, he had seen her play in the Victorian Netball League. “I know there are some young ones and I believe some that could be given some opportunity in A-grade. “It’s similar to what I did at Sunbury, in blooding and giving them some opportunities. I’d love to nurture some of them and help them grow. Hopefully we get some good numbers at trials.” Boldiston will also coach the under-19 team. He said they were still looking for a few more under-19s. Boldiston, who is also the Victorian under-20 men’s coach, said the Bombers trials are on Wednesday, December 9 and 16.
