Young Wyndham residents Jumess and Alexander will have their story shared on ABC radio and television next week. The pair have been named the Wyndham region representatives for Takeover Melbourne, an ABC storytelling competition for young Victorians aged 12 to 18 years. Jumess, a Truganina resident, wrote a story about her experience of overcoming internalised racism to inspire fellow African-Australians to love their culture.

An expanded emergency department at Werribee Mercy Hospital is on the cards after a $4.8 million injection as part of last week’s state budget. Mercy Health Group chief executive Stephen Cornelissen welcomed the funding to go towards planning the hospital’s $300 million third stage. He said construction needed to start within the next three years if Wyndham residents were to “receive the level and quality of health services they deserve and need”. “With the population growth at its current rate, it’s projected by 2026 our emergency department presentations will have increased by more than 107 per cent,” Adjunct Professor Cornelissen. “We have 15 cubicles in our existing emergency department, many of which are frequently occupied by patients waiting for mental health inpatient placement or community transfer. “We are also treating increasingly more complex health issues at our hospital as a result of having an Intensive Care Unit. At times, we cannot provide care for patients … because we do not yet have the specialist services required.” He said it was anticipated that the third stage would include an expanded emergency department and short-stay department with satellite medical imaging. It would also increase capacity for maternity and birthing services, and include a special care nursery and a postnatal inpatient ward. Renal services would be expanded too, including six additional dialysis chairs. Improved outpatient clinics, a modern pathology laboratory and pharmacy and more diagnostic endoscopy rooms are on the cards. “Expansion will also improve our capacity to retain and attract some of Australia’s most skilled doctors and nurses,” Adjunct Professor Cornelissen said.

New medical centre planned By Alesha Capone Plans for a $1.9 million medical centre on the Princes Highway in Werribee have been lodged with Wyndham council. Western Health Property Holdings has lodged a planning permit application for the centre, to be built across from Werribee Mercy Hospital. The medical centre will be constructed in two stages. Planning documents submitted to the council reveal plans for the construction of the centre’s ground floor and 44 carparks

during stage one, with a first floor to be added four to five years later. The medical centre will have a total floor area of 884 square metres – 330.45 square metres smaller than an earlier application lodged for the same development. The centre will feature 20 consulting suites, with up to 14 people providing health services on site at any one time. A proposed stage one would include 10 consulting rooms, a treatment room, two dental treatment rooms, a dental sterilisation room, patient waiting areas and reception,

a pathology room, toilets, a dispensary and storage. Stage two will have 10 consulting rooms, two offices, a lunchroom for staff, toilets and a conference and training room. According to the planning permit application, the medical centre would become a “one-stop shop allowing patients access to broader specialist medical facilities, allied health services and pharmaceuticals”. The proposed opening hours of the medical centre are 8am to 9pm, Monday to Saturday,

and 9am to 6pm on Sundays. Vehicle entry and exit to the site would be provided via two one-way accessways from the Princes Highway service road. “The proposed medical centre would be appropriately sited on the land, with generous buffers from the adjoining residential properties to the east and west,” the proposal states. “The design of the medical centre would minimise visual impact on the streetscape by ensuring all car parking is located at the rear and maximum front garden area is retained.”

Wyndham’s kerbside bin collections may experience disruptions during the next two weeks. The council recently issued an online notice that bins may be emptied later than usual on collection day, or on the following day. “Due to some disruption to kerbside bin collection, contractor JJ Richards & Sons will be starting their collections an hour earlier than usual each weekday from now until 5 December 2020,” the notice said. “Please remember to put your bins out the night before collection to ensure they don’t get missed.” The notice stated the council’s waste management and disposal team “is working closely with JJ Richards & Sons to ensure that all kerbside bins are emptied each week”. “We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience”. A Wyndham council spokesperson said the disruption to collections was caused because JJ Richards & Sons “briefly experienced a shortage of qualified drivers”. “This meant the company extended its hours of operation to ensure residential bin pick-ups continued,” the council spokesperson said. “Our contractor has informed us that all runs are being completed by 5pm each day and any missed bins are being picked up within 24 hours.” Earlier this year, the council awarded a new kerbside waste collection contract to Cleanaway, which will take over from JJ Richards & Sons on December 7. Champ heads new park International motorcycle champion Steve Martin has taken over operation of the new motocross track at Lawrie Emmins Reserve in Laverton North. Police are appealing for witnesses to a collision about 12.40pm on November 19. A white semi-trailer truck was driving inbound on the Princes Freeway just after the Forsyth Road overpass, when the vehicle allegedly drove through the centre median strip and struck a white Honda CRV, before coming to a stop in a car park in Wallace Avenue. The driver of the Honda, a 33-year-old man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries, while the truck driver, a 58-year-old man, was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Gold Coast flights set for takeoff By Alesha Capone Jetstar will resume flights from Avalon to the Gold Coast in January next year. A Jetstar spokesperson said the airline would operate four weekly return services a week and would look to increase services based on demand. “This will mark the first time we have flown this route since March,” the spokesperson said. “We are excited to help more families and friends reconnect and help to boost local tourism in Geelong and the region during the

school holidays.” Avalon Airport chief executive Justin Giddings said he was thrilled that Jetstar would resume Gold Coast flights from January 1. “This is a hugely popular route for our passengers, and the timing is perfect for summer holidays after such a difficult 2020,”

Mr Giddings said. “Our airport experience will utilise touchless check-in and upgraded faster security screening. “With flights to the Gold Coast starting at just $99, flying at peak periods has never been more affordable.” Mr Giddings said that to celebrate the announcement, Avalon Airport would extend its $5 a day car parking until the end of February. Overall, Qantas and Jetstar will start operating more than 160 flights per week from Melbourne, as of December 1.

Out of this world project Pupils at a Point Cook school will track how wattle seeds grow after they have been sent into outer space, as part of a scientific program. Stella Maris Catholic Primary School is participating in the ‘What’ll happen with the wattle??!’ project, which will send native golden wattle seeds to the International Space Station this month. The One Giant Leap Australia Foundation is sending the seeds to the space station in collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and with the support of the Australian Space Agency. The seeds will live in space for six months and be returned to Australia in time for Science Week 2021. Chosen schools across the nation will be sent some seeds which have been sent into space and some seeds which have not. Pupils will be asked to monitor the seeds’ growth across two years.

More than 150 schools, Scout groups and Australian Air Force Cadets have been selected to participate in the project. To be picked for the program, schools had to send in 200 words and a short video. Stella Maris submitted a video titled Seeds in Space to the competition. Budget ‘delivers in spades’ By Alesha Capone A new court will be built, schools will be upgraded and a key intersection will be made safer as part of the state government’s budget spend in Wyndham. The 2020-21 state budget includes $272 million for a new Wyndham Law Court, to assist in the construction of a new building with 13 courtrooms, four hearing rooms, three mediation suites and a specialist Family Violence Court. The budget also contains $15.27 million to widen the Point Cook and Sneydes road intersection, including the installation of traffic lights. Upgrades to local schools will be funded, with $10.1 million for Hoppers Crossing Secondary College, $10.7 million for Woodville Primary School and $8 million for Warringa Park School. Funding has also been set aside for land acquisition for future schools including Truganina North Secondary College and Holyoake Parade, Lollypop Creek, Riverdale East and Tarneit Missen House primary schools. New bus connections for Almanda College students living in Wyndham Harbour have been funded. In public transport, $2 billion has been allocated to the Geelong Fast Rail project to reconnect Werribee to Geelong. Funding to acquire land for the future Point Cook Community Hospital is another feature. Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said the budget “has delivered in spades for Wyndham”. Cr Hegedich thanked residents, council staff and the Point Cook Action Group, who have spent years campaigning for an upgrade to the

Social housing build blitz

By Benjamin Millar The state government’s record $5.3 billion spend on public housing will invest millions of dollars in Wyndham after it was declared one of the scheme’s priority sites. The ‘Big Housing Build’ will result in more than 12,000 new homes built across the state in the biggest public housing blitz on record. Wyndham has been identified as one of 21 priority sites in the scheme, which is expected to support about 10,000 jobs each year over the next four years. In announcing the spending recently, Premier Daniel Andrews said the investment would provide much-needed housing for some of the state’s most vulnerable people and “supercharge” Victoria’s economic recovery through the pandemic and beyond. “This package will boost our state’s social housing supply by 10 per cent in just four years – providing a stable foundation for thousands of Victorians to build their lives,” he said. The program will deliver 9300 new social housing homes and a further 2900 new affordable and low-cost homes. Mr Andrews said a quarter of the funding would be spent in regional Victoria. The new homes will meet 7-star energy efficiency standards, making them more comfortable during summer and winter, and saving tenants money on power bills. Mr Andrews said the unprecedented investment would generate an estimated $6.7 billion in economic activity and support more than 18,000 jobs at its peak – with 10 per cent

of the work on major projects to be done by apprentices, cadets and trainees. “This will change lives – giving thousands of Victorians the security and stability of a home, and tens of thousands of Victorians a job,” he said. “It’s a profound investment in a stronger, fairer Victoria – a Victoria that recognises everyone deserves a place to call home.”

Pair jailed for Truganina assault By Alesha Capone Two young adults, who bashed a man unconscious after he came to their assistance following a car crash in Truganina, have each been sentenced to six years jail. Baroch Baroch, 26, and Mawut Ater, 24, were sentenced in the County Court last month. The court heard that Baroch was driving a stolen car that ran off the road and hit an embankment on July 25 last year. Ater was a passenger in the car. A driver who witnessed the crash stopped to help but as he approached Baroch and Ater punched him. When the man fell to the ground, the pair kicked him and stomped on his head until he fell unconscious. Baroch and Ater stole the man’s car as residents from a nearby property called emergency services. Baroch pleaded guilty to intentionally causing injury, committing an indictable offence while on bail, dealing with the proceeds of crime, being in possession of a weapon and theft. Ater pleaded guilty to intentionally causing injury, carjacking, robbery, obtaining property by deception and handling stolen goods. In a victim impact statement, the assault victim said he has trouble sleeping and is reluctant to stop at the scene of future accidents he may drive past. Judge Marich described the assault and theft of the man’s car as an “extremely painful, traumatic and distressing event for him.” The court heard Baroch and Ater, a mother of two, both used ice on occasion. Judge Marich sentenced Baroch to six years and six months in prison with a non-parole period of four years and three months. Ater was sentenced to six years’ jail with a non-parole period of four years.

Park pops up at Point Cook

A pop-up picnic park has opened in Point Cook. Stockland Point Cook officially launched the park, being run in partnership with not-for-profit organisation CoLocal, and with support from Wyndham council, last Wednesday. Located in the dining precinct on Murnong Street, the park has transformed the road into a community space with turf, shades, planters, benches and social distancing bubbles. CoLocal founder Sara Mitchell said the pop-up picnic park aimed to support local retailers in their post-COVID recovery and to reconnect residents. Retailers on Murnong Street, including Grill’d, Priya Indian Restaurant, Cold Rock and Burrito Bar, are offering outdoor dining. Customers can also order takeaway from any of the Murnong Street restaurants and local eateries in the picnic space. Stockland Point Cook centre manager Frank Pizi said that past Point Cook pop up parks have been popular with the public. The pop-up picnic park will operate under a COVID-Safe plan, with marshals present to ensure compliance. The pop up picnic park will run until mid-April 2021. Details: stockland.com.au/PointCook.

BUDGET 2020/21 DECEMBER COMMUNITY UPDATE This has been a challenging year for Victorians, and as we get to the other side of the global pandemic, the Andrews Government continues to make people a priority. Last week, I presented our State’s Budget – which delivers on the investments that will see our community recover and come back even stronger, including here in Werribee. Burger chain boosts jobs Global burger chain Carl’s Jr. is set to open a new eatery in Williams Landing this month, which will create about 60 jobs. The venue will open on Sayers Road, next to the BP. An exact date for the restaurant’s opening is yet to be set. The burger chain already operates seven stores across the state, including in Altona. CJ’s QSR Group managing director, Andrew Firn, said: “We are delighted to be bringing Carl’s Jr. to Williams Landing. We are excited to be providing 60-plus jobs to local residents, many of whom will be starting their first job.” CJ’s QSR Group general manager Domit Makhoul said: “We’ve had so much online buzz asking when we were opening Williams Landing, so finally we can announce it’s a

December 2020 launch.” Gaven Needham, Asia Pacific general manager CKE Restaurants, the parent company of Carl’s Jr., said the company was aiming to open more than 100 restaurants across Australia during the next 10 years. “We have no doubt that Carl’s Jr. will soon become the ultimate destination for Australian consumers seeking the most premium burger at affordable prices,” he said. The restaurant chain was founded by Carl N. Karcher. In 1941, Carl and his wife Margaret purchased a hot dog cart and in 1945, Carl opened Carl’s Drive-In Barbecue in Anaheim, California. DELIVERING FOR WERRIBEE The Budget includes $272 million to build new law courts in Wyndham, as well as $84 million for the transformation of Werribee Zoo, and $4.8 million to plan for the future expansion of the Werribee Mercy Hospital. In addition, the Budget will deliver $2 billion towards Geelong Fast Rail, reducing travel times and supporting more passengers on Victoria’s busiest regional rail line. Construction of Geelong Fast Rail is set to include major investments to the Werribee rail corridor. Stage One of the project delivers track upgrades between Werribee and Laverton, including a new dedicated express track, cutting-down travel time to the CBD. Once the level crossings are removed on the Werribee line in Wyndham, returning Geelong services to the Werribee corridor also frees up room for more trains to Melbourne’s west, including through to Wyndham Vale. For Wyndham residents, it’ll mean less time commuting and more time with the people we love. Through this Budget, the Andrews Government is also making the single biggest investment ever in our schools and in the education of all Victorian children, making sure they have access to great classrooms, libraries and learning spaces. For the Werribee electorate, this means a $10.66 million upgrade for Woodville Primary School, with students to benefit from modernisation of Block A and Block B, and a $7.97 million upgrade for Warringa Park School, supporting students by delivering the next stage of the school’s masterplan.

The Park Werribee owner Nick Christou said the hotel received more than 500 calls in just two days last week after Premier Daniel Andrews announced that eateries could host sit-down meals again. Committee for Wyndham chief executive Barbara McLure said it was terrific to see people shopping and eating in Watton Street, Werribee last Thursday. “I think there is a sense that people have an understanding that local businesses did it really hard and it’s very important to support local businesses now,” she said. Renay Ahmed, from the Wyndham Cache café and deli and LT’s Egg Farm in Werribee South, said the café was encouraging customers to order grazing boxes and drinks to enjoy on the lawn. “The response has been phenomenal. As soon as the Premier’s announcement happened, the phones were ringing off the hook,” Ms Ahemd said. Pacific Werribee centre manager Patricia Gardiner said the shopping centre was pleased to welcome back traders which were closed during the pandemic. “The centre community is certainly beaming with positivity,” Ms Gardiner said. State manager for Cedar Woods, Lloyd Collins said it was encouraging to see the Williams Landing town centre reopen. He said Cedar Woods was working with tenants and council to expand the external dining area to help businesses get back on track. Wyndham council last week announced measures to help eateries extend their dining areas, by creating an additional 1938 square metres of outdoor dining space across the municipality. Wyndham city design and liveability director Ludo Campbell-Reid said the council was also planning the West End Experience, an outdoor dining area in Watton Street between Bridge Hotel and Wedge Street Piazza, as a series of one-day activations. In addition, three “parklets” will be installed in Hoppers Junction and outdoor dining precincts created in the Point Cook Town Centre and Soho Village.

Back in business Teenage boxing champion Marissa Williamson has been awarded a scholarship by the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame. The scholarship gives the 18-year-old $10,000 to put towards boxing costs, access to wellbeing programs and staff, and she will be mentored by Olympic gold medallist and professional beach volleyballer Kerri Pottharst. Williamson grew up in Wyndham and took up boxing when she was 16. She is the 64kg Victorian Boxing Champion, 64kg Australian Boxing Champion and is on the National Futures Team which aims to train athletes for the 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2024 Olympics. Williamson said the scholarship has been the highlight of a “tough year”. She left foster care earlier this year and was temporarily homeless before finding her own apartment. And she was all set to represent Australia at the World Youth Games in Poland last month, before it was postponed until next year due to COVID-19. Williamson said she usually trains six days a week. For the past few months she has been training at Crew Fitness and Performance in Braybrook, which was co-founded by five-time Australian boxing champion Jason Mallia. “What I have enjoyed [about boxing] is just the opportunity to travel and learn life skills, which I didn’t have the chance to do when I was younger,” she said. ‘Lavish’ monologue wins

Wyndham council is encouraging residents and visitors to explore Werribee’s most iconic street art murals, in a new self-guided trail and free audio tour. Starting at the Wyndham Cultural Centre and finishing at Kelly Park, the kilometre-long walking tour through the city centre will take about an hour to complete. The council’s city design and liveability director, Ludo Campbell-Reid, said the trail took in works by Ash Keating, who is known for his large-scale murals created with paint-filled fire extinguishers. Mr Campbell-Reid said the trail also included the works of internationallyrenowned artists Tom Gerard, Ghost Patrol, Minna Leunig and Makatron, plus Megan Bonnici and Liz Hooker, who have worked with Blender Studios to create works in Werribee’s laneway precinct. “This walking tour offers Wyndham residents and tourists an insight into the arts and an opportunity to look at their streets with a fresh perspective,” he said. “At each stop, you can use your mobile phone camera to scan the QR code and listen to the artist talk about their work. “The tour is suitable for all ages and each bite-sized interview includes a conversation with the artist who created the work – it’s like having your own personal guide.“ Details: www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/ arttour Wyndham Theatre Company president Joshua Ferguson in his role as Benedict Allistaire Percival Clairecroftenson III. The Wyndham Theatre Company has taken home two gongs at the Victorian Drama League Monologue Competition. Alaine Beek, of Essence Productions, wrote and directed the winning monologue, which was performed by the theatre company’s president Joshua Ferguson. They entered a video of the monologue into the competition earlier this month, winning first place in the Adult Comedy category. The production, which was filmed and edited by Max Hopkins of Cascade Classic, also received an Adjudicators Award for its “lavishly detailed period set and costume, plus sound design”. The monologue was filmed in the drawing room of Mr Ferguson’s 1930s Spanish mission-style manor in Wyndham. The character Mr Ferguson portrayed in the monologue was an eccentric and lonely rural doctor named Benedict Allistaire Percival Clairecroftenson III. “I haven’t done anything like this before and to be able to work closely with Alaine on this project during the struggles of lockdown has been the best fun and so exciting,” Mr Ferguson said. He said the 50-year-old Wyndham Theatre Company (WTC) was seriously impacted by COVID-19, as was the rest of the performing arts industry. “We have a wonderful group of followers and performers that just want to get back in the spotlight and put a smile or a tear on someone’s face, while doing what we love,” he said. Building a ‘smart’ community More than 215 properties with an estimated value of $70 million, including some residences aimed at first-home buyers, will be built in the Mambourin estate. Developer Risland Australia has partnered with building company Tomorrow Homes to deliver the project across the next four years. The properties will be located within the $1.6 billion Windermere estate on Greens Road, which is planned to include 5000 homes, retail and recreational precincts, four schools and 50

hectares of open spaces across 360 hectares. Initially, Risland Australia and Tomorrow Homes plan to construct 15 residences ranging from three to four-bedroom homes, with prices from $354,900 to $480,000. The houses, to be built as part of the Flora Residences project, will include internal herb gardens and Google smart home integrated systems featuring security cameras, carbon sensors and electric car chargers in the garage. The chief executive of project marketing

for Oliver Hume, Windermere estate’s sales and marketing agent, Julian Coppini, said first-home buyers represented more than 40 per cent of purchasers in the Windermere estate. “Flora Residences is targeted at the first-home buyer demographic,” he said. “The concept of building communities within a community is a new idea in Windermere estate.” Mambourin developers are also working with Wyndham council to plan the

Mambourin town centre, including a retail centre with 27,000 square metres of floor space, a supermarket, specialty stores, a cinema and green spaces. Stage one plans for Mambourin, which feature a 5.4 hectare wetland and park, have been approved by the council. In the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2016 census, just four residents were recorded as living in Mambourin. This is expected to grow to about 3200 residents within the next six years.

A master of his trade Werribee carpenter Ben Taylor has been named State Apprentice of the Year by Master Builders Victoria. Mr Taylor, a third-year apprentice, works for Appetite for Construction and studies at Victoria University Polytechnic. He said receiving the award was both “a privilege and a surprise”. “It certainly wasn’t something I was seeking or expecting to win but it feels pretty awesome that my hard work has paid off,” he said. “I would like to thank my boss Nick Lightfoot for giving me a start as an apprentice and all those I’ve worked with at Vic Uni.” Mr Taylor said he has never won anything like the Master Builder Victoria’s award in his carpentry career, but when he was in the army as an infantry soldier he won the Most Outstanding Soldier award in his recruit course. Mr Taylor said he decided to pursue carpentry when he was discharged from the army.

“I’m currently in the process of getting the required study under my belt in order to get my builder’s licence,” he said. “Once I’ve done that I will be looking to run my own projects with a focus on prefabricated off-site building as I think this is the future of building efficient, cost-effective housing.” Co-director of Appetite for Construction, Nick Lightfoot, said Mr Taylor was “a very deserving winner” of the Master Builders Victoria award. “He’s been a real asset to our business and I believe he’s got a great career in the industry ahead of him,” Mr Lightfoot said. What do you like about Point Cook? Point Cook is a great place to live. I have been fortunate enough to make connections with amazing people in our community all through the act of doing what I love, serving and cooking. Point Cook has some of the best schools, restaurants and outdoor parks. With such a wide range of communities, you get to experience so many traditions and cultures. How many people do you employ across your two restaurants? I own Pizza Industri in Point Cook and Landing Point which is opening soon in Williams Landing. Industri Pizza in Point Cook has 15-20 staff and this was 25 pre-COVID-19. Landing Point has five-10 staff and will hopefully grow from there.

What changes have your businesses experienced during the COVID-19 lockdowns? I was worried Industri Pizza would suffer from the closure, but the community was very supportive online through our Facebook page. We increased our takeaway capacity straight away because a lot of people started ordering. We will usually sell 400-500 pizzas on a Friday night. The Williams Landing community was already supporting the new Landing Point Facebook page even before we opened. Stella Maris Catholic School was a big hit. We also delivered 40 freshly cooked meals to health workers at Sunshine Hospital in collaboration with the United Sikh Community. Why did you decide to expand your business

into Williams Landing? Customers from Pizza Industi were wanting us to deliver to Williams Landing because there wasn’t any Italian food local. Industri Pizza does stone-cooked pizzas and customers kept telling us they wanted a woodfire pizza option,

For many, this Christmas will act as a release valve for a year’s worth of extraordinary pressure. And after everything we’ve endured to stop the spread of COVID-19, we certainly deserve some rest and relaxation. But it’s also vital that we are aware that the difficulties of the year don’t just disappear because of the festive season – and for some people, they can get worse. In a normal year, the risk of suicide, dangerous behaviour and mental health issues increase around Christmas. This year we need to be particularly vigilant. Even as social restrictions ease, financial, employment and personal pressures remain, and mental health issues cannot be turned off like a tap. ‘Suicide’ is one of our most socially taboo words. Yet suicide is the leading cause of death for young Australians and older men. LGBTIQ people are also more at risk than the general population – but suicide can affect anyone, and its triggers are complex. Our silence is part of the problem. Alertness to warning signs, and a willingness to act, are other pieces to the puzzle. Taking notice if someone’s not engaged, or if something’s not quite right, is something we can all do. And we are helping more people learn how to go a step further and ask the right questions, listen, and refer someone in need on to professional support. In close consultation with experts and the community in the higher-risk areas of Melton, Brimbank and the Macedon Ranges, North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network has developed support models and delivered training to GPs, frontline workers

community including for suicide aftercare, mentoring for LGBTIQ youth and affirmative practice training program among its recent successes. We’re also excited to be on the cusp of launching a new community awareness campaign – to not only highlight the greater risk of suicide experienced by LGBTIQ people, but to improve overall health and wellbeing, and promote more supportive and responsive communities. Mercifully, the suicide rate has not increased compared to last year so far. But during the final six weeks of lockdown there were reports of growing numbers of young people presenting to emergency departments with suicidal thoughts, or serious self-harm. We weathered the worst of lockdowns by pulling together as a community – and that’s also what we need to do to stay well and prevent suicide. With the determination shown by community, restrictions are starting to ease and this will enable many to see family this Christmas. Christmas cheer can be a veneer. Enjoy the holidays, but don’t be afraid to seek help, speak up or ask questions. Let’s stay connected and keep looking out for each other.

Mix it up with your own routine spine – so think about pushing your bottom back and let your torso fall forwards as you do, rather than just bringing your chest down. Rotation – We rotate a lot in our day! From putting the washing out, to getting in and out of the car to just turning over in bed. Human rotation happens in the torso – so any exercise that requires you to twist is a rotation exercise. As you twist, be sure to get your eyes and belly button to face the direction you are twisting to.

With more freedom to move around outdoors now, you may be keen to get some more exercise into your day. You may even want to come up with a workout routine for yourself. But, where do you start? Writing a simple exercise program for yourself can be easy – as long as you know the key ingredients. So, let’s take a look at what you might like to include. (This advice is general in nature. You should consult your GP before undertaking any new exercise programs. Please consider any injuries or limiting concerns that you may have, and modify your program accordingly).

Locomotion – Very simply, locomotion is another way of saying walking, jogging, running, etc. Basic human locomotion is typically forwards, but we do also move from side to side and backwards through the day, so try to include this in your exercise.

A workout should always start with a warm up. A good warm up has some gentle movement and dynamic stretching – think arm circles, leg swings, torso twists, etc. It can last from 5 to 15 minutes, depending on your needs and the intensity of the following workout.

Workout Basic human movement for an exercise program can be broken down into seven areas – squat, lunge, push, pull, hip hinge, rotation and locomotion. You can create a complete workout by combining these movement patterns, counting repetitions or time. Squat – A squat is the human sitting pattern. A basic squat is as simple as pretending you

Cool down and stretch – A basic cool down is much like the warm up, but instead of raising your heart rate, the aim is to lower it with gentle movement. A basic stretch routine would include all the major muscle groups – those of the legs, torso and arms.

Lunge – The lunge is the ‘step forward to pick something up’ pattern. Start with your feet hip width apart, take a step forward on one foot and bend the back knee down towards the ground. Reverse the move to return to standing.

Pull – So, therefore, anytime we move an object towards our centre of gravity, we are pulling. A crunch is a pull movement, because you are pulling yourself up.

Push – Any time we move an object away from our centre of gravity, we are pushing. The most typical bodyweight push exercise is, of course, the push up. Push ups really can be done in

Middle-distance runner David Ryrie, a year-11 student at Werribee Technical School, recently finished third in the Victorian Schoolboys’ steeplechase title over a distance of 2000 metres at Olympic Park. Finishing in the time of six minutes and 27 seconds, David bettered his own record set with the Werribee Athletics Club’s under-19 division by five seconds.

The ridiculous irony of aged care was brought to light at a recent Werribee Council meeting, when it was shown that private nursing homes were receiving more government funding than publicly-run facilities, such as the Wyndham Lodge Nursing Home. The nursing home, already more than $400,000 in debt due to government bungling, is facing a shaky future with each passing day and local councillor, Stuart Southwick, is up in arms.

Residents have been warned that Wyndham’s planned primary health centre may be scrapped unless the community unite behind the project. The warning comes despite assurances from the Department of Human Services (DHS) last week that the proposal was all but signed, sealed and delivered, and a decision to sell land off Derrimut Road to the DHS at Monday’s council meeting.

Key promises, including $18 million to complete the Derrimut Road interchange in Werribee, are in jeopardy after the Ted Bailieu-led Coalition secured power at the state election. Wyndham’s three state Labor MPs – Tarneit’s Tim Pallas, Lara’s John Eren and Altona’s Jill Hennessy – all comfortably retained their seats, despite swings to the Liberals.

Speeding drivers on police radar The Speeding Has Consequences campaign aims to remind motorists to focus on the road and their speed when driving. Road policing adviser Sergeant Marty Wallace from Westgate Highway Patrol says speeding on our roads has consequences for the driver. “If you’re caught speeding, no matter how much over the speed limit, at the least you will receive an on-the-spot infringement, and penalty points will apply,” Sergeant Wallace says. “Excessive speeds can also include suspension of licences for three months or more and your vehicle can be impounded for at least 28 days. In extreme cases a prison sentence is a possibility. “The simple solution for avoiding any loss of points or fines is to be a safe and considerate driver. Like most things in life, it takes time and practise to become a confident driver on the road. The best thing any driver can do is to slow down and travel at a speed that is safe for the conditions. “Victoria Police will continue with a number of enforcement measures that target the small minority of drivers who put safe road users at risk.”

Strong property market forecast following budget announcements Homes in Victoria are being snapped up according to the latest figures and, after the recent announcement on stamp duty reductions, the property market is not expected to slow down, reports Ruth Lewis. “Since the easing of real estate restrictions in metro Melbourne, we have seen a massive spike in properties being listed on our site: properties across all price points and with a large geographic spread,” said Toby Balazs, chief executive of realestateview.com.au. “There has been a corresponding surge in buyer demand in the Victorian market as well, which has led to strong competition for property, and therefore strong prices being achieved. “The feedback we are consistently receiving from our agency partners is that they need more quality stock to satisfy buyer demand. “The Victorian government’s budget announcement on November 24 that stamp duty costs will be reduced by 50 per cent on newly constructed and off-the-plan homes up to $1 million, and a 25 per cent discount on existing homes up to the same value, will provide important further support to the property market into 2021. We trust there will be strong market activity right up to the end of the year, and 2021 will also start positively.” Strong market activity was also reflected in October’s Days on Market data report from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria. Figures revealed that the average Victorian home is spending just 33 days on the market before being sold, the lowest recorded since 2009. REIV president Leah Calnan says that the Victorian real estate market is starting to shine post-COVID-19 restrictions, with

homes across the state taking less time to sell. Calculated as a rolling monthly average for properties sold by private treaty, days on market data is a metric that reflects the level of buyer interest in the market. The October results show a market picking up strongly after recording a sluggish 71 days on the market in September, coming back stronger even

when compared to the 40 days it took to sell in October 2019. Ms Calnan said Victorian real estate agents are enthusiastically servicing buyers returning to the market. “With homes in Victoria taking less time to sell, optimism is returning to the Victorian real estate market,” she said. “Days on the market is a strong indicator

of buyers’ desire. Competition between buyers is heating up, and people aren’t waiting to purchase the property they want. “Low days on market data is very encouraging as we are coming out of COVID-19 restrictions.”

Toyota Camry and Aurion 2011 - 19 By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Toyota Camry and Aurion in the period being examined here are medium-to-large family cars competing against Commodore and Falcon. Though slightly smaller than the big Aussies, these Toyotas have almost as much interior room. They were built in the Toyota factories in Melbourne for more than 30 years, most recently at Altona. However that factory closed in October 2017 and the Camry and Aurion have been imported from then on. Australian-built Toyotas were virtually to the same high standards as Japanese made ones because Toyota’s head office kept an eagle eye on the output. Indeed many Toyotas made in Oz were imported to other countries. Camry and Aurion have many changes from Japanese models to suit them to Australian driving conditions and Aussie drivers’ tastes. Basically, they have slightly firmer suspensions and the engines are tuned to give them grunt starting lower down in the rev range. The four-cylinder Camry engine in the gen-seven of 2011 had a capacity of 2.5 litres. The V6 used in the Aurion is a 3.5-litre that’s smooth and powerful with plenty of punch. The eighth generation Camry – the name Aurion was gone – arrived in October 2017, is larger and sits on a longer wheelbase. It’s surprisingly stylish, with quite a bold grille and sloping tail. Engines were as before, but significantly revised: a 2.5-litre four-cylinder, 3.5-litre V6 and a hybrid petrol-electric four. Transmissions are all automatic: a six-speed beside the four-cylinder, a CVT in the hybrid and an eight-speed with the V6. There are paddle shifters on the upmarket models. Toyota launched the Australian-built Camry Hybrid in February 2010. With more power

and torque than the full-petrol Camry the hybrid had added performance. Depending on where and how it’s driven the Hybrid can use 10 to 40 per cent less fuel than a pure-petrol car. Toyota has arguably the most widespread dealer network in Australia. There are dealers in many remote areas due to its major presence in the 4WD and light-commercial fields. Spare parts and servicing costs are generally reasonably priced, with spares continuing to be sold here after local manufacture ceased. Good home mechanics will find these cars are reasonably easy to work on. As they are aimed at conservative buyers these Toyotas are often cheaper to insure than fully imported cars in this segment.

What to look for Look over the complete body for damage, or indications it has been repaired after a crash. If there’s any doubt either pass up on the car or get an expert appraisal.

Run your hand over the front tyre tread – more resistance one way than the other means uneven tyre wear. That’s often caused by a wheel alignment problem, possibly caused by the car being thumped against a kerb and twisting the suspension. The engine should start quickly and settle into a steady idle within a few seconds. SPORT Rupertswood looks at the positives Rupertswood Cricket Club is taking the positives out of a tough year which has put sport on the backburner. With COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns a big part of the year, Rupo has kept things ticking over behind the scenes. Captain-coach Andrew Pizaro said it was about looking at the opportunities and getting the club in the right place so it could go from strength to strength. “Not just in sport, as you look a lot of places are doing things differently and they have flourished through COVID,” he said. “A sports club can do something differently as well and it makes us reflect and see the things we can do better. “As soon as COVID hit we started having a group meeting nearly every week. We did quizzes online and started some investigation into what we could do to promote the club. “It opened the door for me to do a podcast about the club. Interviewing players, former

players and juniors. I didn’t think it would be as big as it would be.” After a delayed start to training Rupo has had some good numbers. They’ve gone from four to five senior teams with a good junior program. Pizaro has also taken the opportunity to change training, with a focus on centre wicket practice. Several players have come into the Johnstone Shield side that just missed out on finals last season. Tristen Taylor-White steps up after playing in the lower grades as he had a gap year from serious cricket. Keegan Guy, who plays football at Rupertswood, has slotted straight in, while Shane Abdilla, who has done plenty of work with the junior side, has decided to take his cricket more seriously. Matthew Castle, who had the past season off, also returns. The club had recruited Corey Woolley, but he returned to the Sunbury Kangaroos after they lost a number of players.

Pizaro said he was happy with where things were sitting. “We’ve got all the pieces in the right place,” he said. “Bert Van Den Heuvel is back as my assistant coach and that role is crucial. He’s up there with my best assistant coaches. “I couldn’t be happier with where things are.” Having put some plans into place the past couple of years, Pizaro said he was still aiming high to try and win a premiership. “It never goes out of my mind,” he said. “I set the bar high.” Rupertswood started its season with a win against Wallan. Maintaining the Roar By Tara Murray Sunbury is confident its side will shape up well in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 4 season. Runners-up in division 5 in their first season in the VTCA, the Roar has stuck with a similar line-up as it looks to go one better in the higher division. New coach Scott Yardley said they were pleased with how things were looking to start the season. Yardley, who is in his third stint as coach of the club, replaces Craig Ballinger, who stood down from the captain-coach role due to other commitments. “It was a good, nice sharp pre-season and then we were into it,” Yardley said. “We’ve stuck with what we had and we’re confident in that and we have plenty of juniors coming through. “It’s about developing the youth and we’ve got a good batch of under-17s.” 30 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 2 December, 2020

Yardley said they had looked to add one new player, Jack Landt. But he will miss the season after signing to play football in the Northern Territory. Yardley said they would get an idea of where the top side sits in the competition over the first few weeks. He said there was plenty of motivation to win a premiership after so many close misses. Last season, the Roar was just two wickets away from claiming first innings points in the division 5 grand final after the first two days. The second weekend of play was cancelled due to COVID-19, with Moonee Valley awarded the premiership for being the higher-ranked team. “We’re still hoping to play finals as a minimum and we are confident that we can get there with what we have,” Yardley said. “St Andrews [who they played round one] played in the grand final last year and they’ve recruited well, so it shows us we’re in the ball park. “The bowlers could be playing in higher

grades, so we’ve just got to get the runs on the board for them to bowl at.” The Roar won their opening round match against St Andrews with the bowlers doing the job as they defended just 104. Yardley said they always expected low scores early in the season and were confident of getting the win defending everything over 100. He was happy with how new captain Stephen Treweek went in his first game in the role. The Roar will only get stronger with last season’s captain-coach Craig Ballinger starting the season in the second XI. Yardley said Ballinger remains one of their premier batters, he just needed to get a few hits under his belt to start the season. With an influx of numbers this season, the Roar is fielding an extra senior team, with three teams playing in the VTCA and two in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association. Gerard Hillier will take on a dual role at the Wyndham Devils after being named as the Devils’ Big V women’s state championship coach. Hillier was recently appointed as the association’s player and coach development manager and the experienced coach was last month named the women’s coach. Championship-winning coach Reece Porter previously held both roles before moving to Sydney. Hiller said he was excited to take on the roles. He previously coached Southern Peninsula’s state champ side, has coached at national level in 3x3 and has been part of Basketball Victoria’s high-performance team. “It was something that was flagged early in the interview process,” Hillier said about doing both roles. “I still had to go through the process separately. “I’m pumped to take over what has been such a successful program over the last couple of years, and equally as excited to promote some of the Wyndham local youngsters in to a more senior role within our program to ensure that our success continues well in to the future.” The Devils will start training this week. Hillier said while he’s coached against many of the players, it was good to finally meet them. The core group of local players – Georgia Tauschke, Sam Moodie, Lauren Jones and Jess Slade – are all returning. Hillier said there were a number of new additions, which would likely be announced in the new year. He said they were still clear on what the league will decide in relation to overseas players. The youth league women’s team will join the senior team for the start of pre-season. Hillier said the two teams would work together for several months. “As a coaching group we want six young girls who can slide between the two programs,” he said. “We’ll look to see who best suits that role.” John Dorge, who was appointed for the 2020 season, remains the men’s coach. Grant Duca will lead the youth men side, while Corey Michailidis steps up into the role of youth women head coach. Tara Murray

Name change reflects club diversity Victorian Turf Cricket Association club Footscray Angliss hopes its name change will better reflect its diversity. The club, which will celebrate its 90th anniversary next year changed its name from Footscray ANA during the off season. The change was first raised by vice-president Rohan James at the club’s annual general meeting in July and was discussed with members, life members, Cricket Victoria, Cricket Australia and Maribyrnong council. ANA stood for the Australian Natives’ Association, which was formed in the 1870s and was limited to white men born in Australia. “I brought it up as it was a personal issue for me,” James said. “I found the ANA and linkage to the white Australia policy … quite disrespectful to the

nation’s first people. The diversity at our club is massive … I didn’t think a name like ANA represented our club.” James’ point hit a nerve with new junior co-ordinator Michael Cox. Cox, who has been involved at the club for 35 years, has been trying to set up the club’s first all-girls team. “From what Rohan and his brother Jason shared at the AGM, I thought my possibility of inclusion for everyone was contradicted by the Australian Natives Association acronym. “If we want a women’s team, this association would not have allowed them to take on leadership roles, I saw that as contradicting what our club is about. “I couldn’t really fathom the idea. We’re such an inclusive club and these things are going

on around the club which are all great but essentially, my mum who came to Australia in the 1950s wouldn’t have been allowed in as she didn’t speak English.” Treasurer Spiros Koziaris said it took him some time to come around to the decision, but he knows it’s the right one. “I don’t think anyone has seen the past players or officials or anyone involved in the club as a racist or associated with what the Australian Natives Association stood for or represents,” he said. “We don’t believe our history is clouded by people behaving that way. There was some reluctance to change it as we were all getting branded as racists, because of what ANA once stood for. “Once we heard from the various people at

New era for Clubbers By Tara Murray For the first time in a long time, there’s a little bit of an unknown factor surrounding Yarraville Club in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division. A perennial grand finalist and premiership contender, the Clubbers have had a summer of change. They’ve got a new captain-coach in Mitch Johnstone, while three of the club’s biggest names – Emmett Bronca, Andrew Cullen and Adam Contessa – have all retired. They were hit for another loss when former state player Will Sheridan decided that he couldn’t commit a month out from the season. Johnstone sees the changes as a challenge, but also an opportunity. “It’s a little bit of an unknown how we will go this year,” he said. “We’ve got an established senior core, but it’s the young faces that are just as exciting. “We might sneak under the radar in an even competition. Anyone can beat anyone and the shorter the format, normally means the closer the competition.”

Johnstone is the big inclusion into the side, having played second XI premier cricket for Essendon in recent years. Chris Martin, who has captained Geelong West, is the other big in. Martin, an all-rounder, will help offset the loss of Sheridan. Johnstone said other players would get more opportunities with the key departures. “There’s guys who have played in the twos and guys who played in the ones and played bits and pieces roles,” he said. “Now they might bat in the top four and bowl first change. There’s opportunities that aren’t normally there. “The guys are excited. Daniel Janka played on the weekend and didn’t get a whole lot of opportunities, but has done everything right. “Guys like Luke Destito, Connor Poulton and Allister Powell. They’ve had fantastic pre-seasons and will be thrown in the deep end. “To play finals we need them to go to the next level.” Despite the change over in the team, Johnstone said they were keen to keep the high standards intact on the field. Since the 2003-04 season, the Clubbers have made 14 grand finals, winning 10 of them. The Clubbers made last season’s grand final which was cancelled halfway through due to COVID-19. The Clubbers were the higher-ranked team in the final, but St Albans was awarded the premiership after it successfully appealed the result due to the wickets being worked on overnight between day one and two.

Seagulls sign two former AFL players Williamstown has started its list announcements for next season with a bang, adding two former AFL players to its squad. Former Hawthorn player Teia Miles and Greater Western Sydney big man Tom Downie were announced as new signings last week ahead of the new-look VFL and East Coast second-tier competition. Miles played 12 games for Hawthorn before being delisted at the end of 2019. He put in some strong performances at AFL and VFL level and is known for his elite work rate and ability to use the ball. Seagulls general manager of football Stephen Soulsby said they were pleased to sign Mileswho who had signed with Geelong’s VFL side for 2020 before the season didn’t go ahead. “To have someone of Teia’s calibre come on board for 2021 is a great outcome for us,” Soulsby said. “He’s someone that can cover a number of positions for us, gives us plenty of versatility around the ground and will continue to set high standards around our club.” Downie played nine matches for the Giants before retiring in 2016. He played with Victorian Amatuer Football Association club Old Scotch last year and led them to a Premier B grand final. He kicked 37 goals and was named in the team of the year and won the GT Moore Medal as the competition’s best and fairest player. Standing at 203 centimetres, Downie is a major coup for the Seagulls as a big-bodied leading ruckman who can float forward and damage the scoreboard. Soulsby said Downie’s character will have a profound impact for Williamstown both on and off the field. “Having Tom come on board is really exciting for us heading into the 2021 season,” he said. “His ability to play as a ruck/forward gives us a really dynamic look working alongside Joel Ottavi and will be a valuable asset to our midfield group with his experience at AFL level.” The Seagulls are yet to announce a coach for next season, with Andy Collins standing down after taking on a full-time teaching position.
