Dancing Dog’s revival By Goya Dmytryshchak Saved from the clutches of developers, the former Dancing Dog Cafe site in Footscray may reopen as a live music venue operated by a local duo. Emily Chen and mother Linda Chen, trading as Mamma Chen’s, have lodged plans with Maribyrnong council to complete an interior fit-out and change the use of the 111-year-old building at 42a Albert Street from a licensed cafe into a live music venue. The proposal includes ground floor renovations to the music hall and guest hall areas and artist studios for rent upstairs. Emily told Star Weekly the initial proposed hours of operation were Fridays 4pm-1am, Saturdays 1pm-1am and Sundays 1pm-11pm. “We’ve applied to open Friday, Saturday and Sunday to start with. The studios upstairs would be open to the artists 24/7. “Hopefully we can extend the trading hours to be seven days in the future, but for now it’ll just be Friday to Sunday.” The iconic cafe closed its doors in March last year, after 17 years of trading. When the building went up for sale in 2015, the community started a crowd-funding campaign to help buy the heritage-listed site, raising nearly $60,000. The building was sold to an investor for $1.6 million, who kept the lease arrangements. Emily posted on social media that they had signed a lease for the building and hoped to gain council and community support to open a live music venue. “I’ve been playing bands around Melbourne for the past 14 years and my mum has been a huge supporter of local music since I was just a little ’un,” they wrote in the post, shared with consent. “We understand that there may be concern about sound travelling etc so we’d love to chat to the community to explain our plans and hopefully alleviate any concern.” Emily said the plans included professional

acoustic treatment to avoid sound carrying out to neighbouring houses and businesses and making the venue more accessible with inclusion of an electronic lift platform to the stage, widened doorways and ramps for wheelchair accessibility, and installation of an accessible toilet. Built in 1909 as The United Friendly Societies
Dispensary, the Edwardian Freestyle building is listed in the Victorian Heritage Database as being significant as “the region’s most prominent reminder of the friendly societies and their dispensaries which, when it was built, were invaluable to working men and women in the region to alleviate the affects of long hard working days among noxious industries
and provide some guarantee against sickness, injury and consequent destitution”. Its creation involved some of the area’s prominent pioneers and personalities and it was claimed at the time of opening as “absolutely the finest specimen of a modern dispensary building to be found in or around Melbourne”, the database states.

Sadly, we have made the decision to cancel this year’s New Year’s Eve Fireworks at Footscray Park due to the State Government guidelines but I am certain that this long-standing event will be back bigger than ever in 2021! Mary, Janine, Hannah, Lochy and I will be enjoying this time with family and I hope you are able to do the same. Given the distances between us over the past nine months – being able to gather around the table with friends and family this Christmas is something to savour. Social housing construction blitz By Benjamin Millar The state government’s record $5.3 billion spend on public housing will invest millions of dollars in Maribyrnong after it was declared one of the scheme’s priority sites. The ‘Big Housing Build’ will result in more than 12,000 new homes built across the state in the biggest public housing blitz on record. Maribyrnong has been identified as one of 21 priority sites in the scheme, which is expected to support about 10,000 jobs each year over the next four years.
In announcing the spending last week, Premier Daniel Andrews said the investment would provide much needed housing for some of the state’s most vulnerable people and “supercharge” Victoria’s economic recovery through the pandemic and beyond. “This package will boost our state’s social housing supply by 10 per cent in just four years – providing a stable foundation for thousands of Victorians to build their lives,” he said. The program will deliver 9300 new social housing homes and a further 2900 new affordable and low-cost homes.

The state government has allocated $4.4 million towards the revitalisation of the Altona foreshore in this year’s budget. The funds will be used for upgrades to the seawall and improved beach access. In a joint statement, Hobsons Bay councillors Tony Briffa and Daria Kellander welcomed the cash boost. “The $4.4 million of state government funding for the Altona and Seaholme foreshore is an excellent outcome for Hobsons Bay,” they said. “This has been a key focus area of advocacy for many years and we thank the Victorian government for supporting the growing need to protect our residents, visitors and the regionally significant Altona Beach precinct from the effects of climate change. “We look forward to continuing our strong partnership with the state government through the delivery of this work, in particular with Parks Victoria, as they undertake the upgrade of the Altona Pier.” As reported by Star Weekly in July, Altona Pier will undergo a $10 million redevelopment. Three options for the new pier are: • Replacing the pier to a similar layout and length; • A new T-shaped pier head, providing more space for recreational activities such as fishing; and • A new angled pier head (45 degrees) with shade and seating. Parks Victoria will select a preferred design option later this year, which will be further refined through a detailed design process.

A champ at history An Altona student has won a national history contest for her research into Australian prisoners of war taken captive by the Japanese and Germans in the Second World War. Ella Bibby, in year 12 at Mount St Joseph Girls’ College, won three categories of the National History Challenge, which had a theme of “contested histories”. She won a gold award (state champion) in the senior category and using primary sources category, and a platinum award (overall national champion) in the using primary sources category. “I felt there is a lot more information available regarding what happened to those under the Japanese, compared to those who were captured by the Germans and the horrific nature of what they went through,” Ella said. “When I was researching the Japanese prisoners, there was loads of research that was available … whereas, when I researched Australians in German captivity, I had to research a lot deeper.” Ella said she examined declassified information but there was still a lot of classified information not yet released. She said winning the awards made her feel “like I had done justice to all of those that were prisoners of war”.

Second-term Greens councillor Jonathon Marsden has become Hobsons Bay mayor for the second time. He was first elected to Strand ward in 2016 and previously served as mayor in 2018-19. Cr Marsden replaced immediate past mayor Colleen Gates who did not contest the Hobsons Bay election but successfully ran for Campaspe Shire council in the state’s north. Cr Marsden is one of three incumbents re-elected, along with independents Tony Briffa and Peter Hemphill. “These past few months of the second lockdown have been pretty stressful for everyone in Victoria and the business of council was disrupted like everyone else’s,” Cr Marsden said. “The previous council worked hard to deliver a COVID budget, including a number of support packages to address hardship and to underpin the recovery and, already, the new council have turned our mind to how we could continue that good work. “There’s something like a 15 per cent downturn in unemployment, particularly in the retail sector, which was particularly hard hit along with other key sectors like entertainment and anyone who had a public-facing role – hospitality, pubs, business – where they’ve lost clientele and they’ve lost staff.” Cr Marsden said another priority was continuing to work on Hobsons Bay’s “virtual energy network”, harnessing solar power to “provide low-cost, clean energy to households and retailers”. First-term independent councillor Daria Kellander, of Cherry Lake ward, was elected deputy mayor. She is one of four new councillors.

Ballarat Street in Yarraville is abuzz with diners enjoying the ambiance created by sparkling festoon lights. Maribyrnong mayor Michael Clarke checked out several of the new spaces, including the famous Back Ally Sally, which is even cooler now with its laneway bar and dining. Littlefoot Bar and Kitchen in Yarraville received a helping hand from Footscray Hockey Club, with the latter providing synthetic turf for an outdoor dining area. I am delighted to have been elected mayor of Hobsons Bay for a second time and to have the opportunity to represent my community for a second term on council. This has been a tough year. We are now at triple doughnuts but the lockdown has taken a toll. The previous council worked hard to deliver a COVID budget and developed several targeted community support packages to address hardship and underpin economic recovery. Council has also been fortunate to partner with the Victorian government on the Working for Victoria program. We are providing employment for a six-month period to 134 people who have lost their job or whose income has fallen significantly due to COVID-19. Already the newly-elected council has turned its mind to how we can continue to drive our economic recovery. I am very much looking forward to working on those initiatives already under way. I know there are a number of other exciting ideas the new council is keen to put forward in 2021 to fulfil its election mandate. I am proud to say Hobsons Bay is leading the way to an ecologically and financially sustainable future. Council’s virtual energy network initiative will generate clean electricity, sharply reduce carbon emissions and stimulate the local economy. Already the first solar photovoltaic infrastructure is being installed on council facilities with more sites to come online in early 2021. We are also delivering projects that will

State’s best leads the way By Goya Dmytryshchak Victoria’s tennis coach of the year Mark Peel has spoken of the toll of the second COVID-19 lockdown as the sport makes a comeback. Peel, who has coached at Altona Tennis Club for 12 years, was recently named Club Coach of the Year in the prestigious Tennis Coaches Australia Victoria awards. He said his business, Vida Tennis, was working with Altona Tennis Club on several initiatives related to the return to tennis after stage 4 restrictions.

“People have come back a little bit unfit, a little bit overweight and some people have struggled mentally and have seen the doctor,” Peel said. “There’s been a number of issues that people have gone through one way or another, and we’re just glad to get people back on the court and them out there into some kind of normality. “Any community club is as much about the social interaction – the game itself is just a catalyst for people to meet up and socialise and make new friends.” The award is given to one tennis coach in Victoria each year, and Peel’s award recognised his work in making tennis inclusive for people living with a mental disability and females, and his achievements with growing the number of kids playing tennis at Altona. “It’s important to stress that any award that I receive really is on behalf of the Altona Tennis Club committee and members as well as the Vida Altona coaches, players, parents and the wider Vida Tennis team,” Peel said.

Roving angels delight Internationally renowned street theatre company Born in a Taxi delighted passersby with their Illuminated Angels roving performance in Altona, Williamstown and Laverton last week. The Altona North-based ensemble will make further appearances in Hobsons Bay’s outdoor trading precincts from December 10-12.
Albrey Walmsley photographed the roving angels in Altona last week. “My girls and I really delighted in watching the beautiful performance art,” she said. “It gave us that real community, festive feeling that we are all so in need of right now. “Normally this sort of performance art is only something you see in visits to the CBD so
it is wonderful to see in our own backyard.” Hobsons Bay council is also delivering 22 neon hearts to trader locations across the municipality as part of its festive season program and to put that extra sparkle on the Business Has Heart Outdoors program.
Hobsons Bay council is again inviting feedback from the community on new residential zones that will guide future development. Three proposed zones are: neighbourhood residential zone (NRZ) with a two storey limit; general residential zone (GRZ) capped at three storeys; and residential growth zone (RGZ) with a discretionary height of four storeys. “Substantial” change is proposed for the RGZ, which includes pockets of Altona, Laverton, Altona North, South Kingsville and Williamstown. The RGZ includes areas around Altona, Aircraft, Laverton, Westona and North Williamstown train stations. New residential zones in Newport are to be determined separately as part of the Newport Structure Plan and Newport heritage Gap Study. “Minimal” and “incremental” change is proposed in the NRZ, which aims to recognise areas of predominantly single and double storey residential development. In the GRZ, the council aims to encourage development that respects the neighbourhood character and encourage a diversity of housing types, with “moderate” change proposed. The new zones will apply to more than 40,000 properties across the municipality. People can have their say until December 23. Champ heads new park International motorcycle champion Steve Martin has taken over operation of the new motocross track at Lawrie Emmins Reserve in Laverton North. The new state-of-the-art facility is now open to the public. Wyndham council’s city life director, Allison Kenwood, said she was confident the new track would be well-used by the motocross community. The council has spent $1.6 million redeveloping the track, which has three different circuits – junior, intermediate and main – built to the latest Motorcycling Australia safety standards.

MY PLACE Altona’s Rob Richardson last week celebrated his 80th birthday and reflected on a lifetime of community involvement with Goya Dmytryshchak. I was born here 80 years ago. My grandfather Harold Phair built Altona Primary School. My grandmother Harriet had the tuck shop in Upton Street and also the lolly bar at the local picture theatre. I’ve been involved in the local community over many years at St Eanswythes Church, junior football, Altona Lifesaving Club, local Freemasonry at Altona Lodge and Altona Laverton Historical Society. I was schooled at Altona Primary School and later went to Footscray Technical School, and was recorded as the school’s ice skating champion in 1954. My football career started with Altona Juniors then Newport, also playing cricket for the Yarraville Scottish Society. I joined the St John Ambulance rescue squad specialist unit as a first responder and took part in several major incidents such as the West Gate Bridge collapse. I joined Freemasonry in 1960 and was a Master first in 1969 – the youngest in the No. 7 group, then five times more – four more in Seaholme No. 813 and once in Altona No. 572. I was installed to Grand Rank in 2019 as Past Grand Standard Bearer. This November, I am celebrating 60 years as a proud Freemason. I’m currently president of Altona Probus and president elect for 2021. You became a Scottish lord this year. Can you tell me about that? After another world tour and a visit to Scotland

For the past nine years, you’ve presented a Life and Style program on radio station WYNFM 88.9. How did COVID-19 affect your broadcasting and your personal life? It had a big effect, not being able to see family here in Melbourne and in Adelaide, particularly not seeing my grandchildren. Also, not being able to be on radio since March, but now returning on Apple 98.5FM on Thursdays from 10. What do you like about Altona? It is one of the jewel suburbs in Melbourne – it’s beach, parks and bike trails. What would you change? Nothing except putting a border fence around it to keep it to ourselves. By Goya Dmytryshchak Australia’s most elite troops say this Remembrance Day the COVID-19 global pandemic has shone a different light on the meaning of sacrifice. Recently retired SAS Major Mark Bainbridge, who spent most of his 22 years’ service in the special forces on multiple tours to the Middle East, said this year had brought into perspective the meaning of real hardship. “I think Remembrance Day this year helps keep perspective on things,” the Newport RSL member said.
“If you think back, all those generations, and saw the commitment and sacrifice they made over a number of years … they were so resilient. “I think, in the light of today’s current global crisis, it really helps me keep perspective on current times versus some real hardships that people have been through before.” Major Bainbridge said he also reflected on those who made the ultimate sacrifice. “I’ve had a lot of my mates and colleagues killed in action,” he said. “Of the 41 Australians who have lost their lives overseas in the last few decades, I do know a lot of them and their families.
“So, I usually get in touch with their families and let them know we’re thinking of them.” Fellow Newport RSL member, Lieutenant Rebecca Hogan, followed her parents’ footsteps into the British navy full-time in 2002. She transferred from the UK military into the Australian navy in 2013, predominantly flying helicopters off the back of ships. “In the UK, we don’t have Anzac Day so Remembrance Day is our primary day to remember our war heroes and the armistice,” she said. “I do have many generations of family in the forces so, for me, remembrance revolves around family.
“I’ve been the one away deployed but I’ve also been the child with the parent deployed and seen the struggles that mum went through. “When dad was away doing his bit, she had to step up and be both parents to two children. “So, for me, Remembrance Day is as much about remembering the sacrifices that families have made in sending their loved ones away to the campaigns, as much as the service of the individuals themselves. “I think being ADF helped me cope with COVID a lot more … I remember my dad saying to me when we went into the first lockdown, just treat it like a deployment.”

For many, this Christmas will act as a release valve for a year’s worth of extraordinary pressure. And after everything we’ve endured to stop the spread of COVID-19, we certainly deserve some rest and relaxation. But it’s also vital that we are aware that the difficulties of the year don’t just disappear because of the festive season – and for some people, they can get worse. In a normal year, the risk of suicide, dangerous behaviour and mental health issues increase around Christmas. This year we need to be particularly vigilant. Even as social restrictions ease, financial, employment and personal pressures remain, and mental health issues cannot be turned off like a tap. ‘Suicide’ is one of our most socially taboo words. Yet suicide is the leading cause of death for young Australians and older men. LGBTIQ people are also more at risk than the general population – but suicide can affect anyone, and its triggers are complex. Our silence is part of the problem. Alertness to warning signs, and a willingness to act, are other pieces to the puzzle. Taking notice if someone’s not engaged, or if something’s not quite right, is something we can all do. And we are helping more people learn how to go a step further and ask the right questions, listen, and refer someone in need on to professional support. In close consultation with experts and the community in the higher-risk areas of Melton, Brimbank and the Macedon Ranges, North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network has developed support models and delivered training to GPs, frontline workers
community including for suicide aftercare, mentoring for LGBTIQ youth and affirmative practice training program among its recent successes. We’re also excited to be on the cusp of launching a new community awareness campaign – to not only highlight the greater risk of suicide experienced by LGBTIQ people, but to improve overall health and wellbeing, and promote more supportive and responsive communities. Mercifully, the suicide rate has not increased compared to last year so far. But during the final six weeks of lockdown there were reports of growing numbers of young people presenting to emergency departments with suicidal thoughts, or serious self-harm. We weathered the worst of lockdowns by pulling together as a community – and that’s also what we need to do to stay well and prevent suicide. With the determination shown by community, restrictions are starting to ease and this will enable many to see family this Christmas. Christmas cheer can be a veneer. Enjoy the holidays, but don’t be afraid to seek help, speak up or ask questions. Let’s stay connected and keep looking out for each other.

Speeding drivers on police radar The Speeding Has Consequences campaign aims to remind motorists to focus on the road and their speed when driving. Road policing adviser Sergeant Marty Wallace from Westgate Highway Patrol says speeding on our roads has consequences for the driver. “If you’re caught speeding, no matter how much over the speed limit, at the least you will receive an on-the-spot infringement, and penalty points will apply,” Sergeant Wallace says. “Excessive speeds can also include suspension of licences for three months or more and your vehicle can be impounded for at least 28 days. In extreme cases a prison sentence is a possibility. “The simple solution for avoiding any loss of points or fines is to be a safe and considerate driver. Like most things in life, it takes time and practise to become a confident driver on the road. The best thing any driver can do is to slow down and travel at a speed that is safe for the conditions. “Victoria Police will continue with a number of enforcement measures that target the small minority of drivers who put safe road users at risk.”

RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings says it has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. “Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face,” he says. “Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen.” Mr Giddings says the work of his group, along with initiatives like Road Policing Operations

identified as a key issue in the Victorian government’s road safety strategy. Speeding and inappropriate travel speeds directly contribute to at least 30 per cent of deaths on

Spirited Swift spreads its wings By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring The Suzuki Swift might be in the featherweight division of the car market, but joining the upgraded flagship Sport, the Series II is far from light-on in modern features of the automobile. With up to $2000 in added features, including advanced safety technology, the recently released Series II of the Japanese hatchback represents very good value for money at $18,990, plus on-road costs, for the entry-level Swift GL Navigator manual. The GL Navigator manual and automatic, GL Navigator Plus, and GLX Turbo automatic continues the three-model line-up. Two engines are fitted, either a 1.2-litre four-cylinder in the ‘Navis’, or a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged unit in the GLX. Standard features across the board include blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, heated door mirrors and reverse parking sensors. New additions across all grades include digital speedometer and auto-up windows. Rear speakers, already standard in the GLX Turbo, have been added to the GL Navigator variants. Exterior design changes include a new front bumper and grille, and sporty alloy wheels.
Styling Exterior design changes include a newly engineered front bumper and grille, and new alloy wheels with low rolling resistance in keeping with its sporty nature. Rear door handles ‘hidden’ in the C-pillar again follow the modern design trend without taking anything away for the Swift character. The Swift Series II colour line-up remains the same, except for the two-tone grey which has been replaced with a single grey tone.
Interior A flat-bottom steering wheel, which is adjustable for tilt and reach in GLX only, gives the driver the ability to tailor the best position. The Swift has 242 litres of luggage space, 32 litres more than the previous model. The area has been optimised to carry a wide range of cargo, made easy to load by a high-lift tailgate.
Infotainment A 7-inch four-zone touch screen, situated at driver’s eye level on the central dashboard, enables easy access to audio and video playback and hands-free phone and navigation. Thanks to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the driver can also connect a smartphone.
Engines / transmissions The GLX test car was powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder putting out 82 kW of power and 160 Nm of torque. The GLX Turbo gets a six-speed torque-converter auto as its only transmission option. The GL Navigator and GL Navigator Plus are powered by a 66 kW / 120 Nm 1.2-litre four-cylinder motor. Both are available with automatic CVT transmission. A five-speed manual is also available in the base GL Navigator.

Safety More and more new vehicles are taking up advanced warning systems such as blind-spot monitoring which detects vehicles in or approaching the rear blind spots flanking the Swift with an illuminated LED icon in the relevant exterior mirror. Driving With peak power of 82 kW at a distant 5500 rpm, the 1-0 litre three-cylinder motor needs some attention to get the best out of it. Turbocharging earns its keep here. Engineers looked to Europe for Swift nimbleness and agility from a the carried-over platform and suspension. For example, a new underbody contributes to lower fuel consumption and better performance in terms

of acceleration, turning and stopping. Steering is sharp with a light and highly rigid suspension and is able to follow contours in the road but does pick up bumps and share them equally among all occupants. Large glassed areas all round make for a bright interior, wide views for passengers and the expansive rear window fills the whole of the interior rear-view mirror giving the driver, together with reversing camera, a safe indication of what’s behind. Petrol consumption on test averaged 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres in city and suburbs, and 3.8 litres per 100 kilometres at motorway speeds, which just about fits in with the car’s claimed 5.1 litres per 100 kilometres combined urban / highway figure. SPORT Rupertswood looks at the positives Rupertswood Cricket Club is taking the positives out of a tough year which has put sport on the backburner. With COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns a big part of the year, Rupo has kept things ticking over behind the scenes. Captain-coach Andrew Pizaro said it was about looking at the opportunities and getting the club in the right place so it could go from strength to strength. “Not just in sport, as you look a lot of places are doing things differently and they have flourished through COVID,” he said. “A sports club can do something differently as well and it makes us reflect and see the things we can do better. “As soon as COVID hit we started having a group meeting nearly every week. We did quizzes online and started some investigation into what we could do to promote the club. “It opened the door for me to do a podcast about the club. Interviewing players, former
players and juniors. I didn’t think it would be as big as it would be.” After a delayed start to training Rupo has had some good numbers. They’ve gone from four to five senior teams with a good junior program. Pizaro has also taken the opportunity to change training, with a focus on centre wicket practice. Several players have come into the Johnstone Shield side that just missed out on finals last season. Tristen Taylor-White steps up after playing in the lower grades as he had a gap year from serious cricket. Keegan Guy, who plays football at Rupertswood, has slotted straight in, while Shane Abdilla, who has done plenty of work with the junior side, has decided to take his cricket more seriously. Matthew Castle, who had the past season off, also returns. The club had recruited Corey Woolley, but he returned to the Sunbury Kangaroos after they lost a number of players.
Pizaro said he was happy with where things were sitting. “We’ve got all the pieces in the right place,” he said. “Bert Van Den Heuvel is back as my assistant coach and that role is crucial. He’s up there with my best assistant coaches. “I couldn’t be happier with where things are.” Having put some plans into place the past couple of years, Pizaro said he was still aiming high to try and win a premiership. “It never goes out of my mind,” he said. “I set the bar high.” Rupertswood started its season with a win against Wallan. Maintaining the Roar By Tara Murray Sunbury is confident its side will shape up well in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 4 season. Runners-up in division 5 in their first season in the VTCA, the Roar has stuck with a similar line-up as it looks to go one better in the higher division. New coach Scott Yardley said they were pleased with how things were looking to start the season. Yardley, who is in his third stint as coach of the club, replaces Craig Ballinger, who stood down from the captain-coach role due to other commitments. “It was a good, nice sharp pre-season and then we were into it,” Yardley said. “We’ve stuck with what we had and we’re confident in that and we have plenty of juniors coming through. “It’s about developing the youth and we’ve got a good batch of under-17s.”
Yardley said they had looked to add one new player, Jack Landt. But he will miss the season after signing to play football in the Northern Territory. Yardley said they would get an idea of where the top side sits in the competition over the first few weeks. He said there was plenty of motivation to win a premiership after so many close misses. Last season, the Roar was just two wickets away from claiming first innings points in the division 5 grand final after the first two days. The second weekend of play was cancelled due to COVID-19, with Moonee Valley awarded the premiership for being the higher-ranked team. “We’re still hoping to play finals as a minimum and we are confident that we can get there with what we have,” Yardley said. “St Andrews [who they played round one] played in the grand final last year and they’ve recruited well, so it shows us we’re in the ball park. “The bowlers could be playing in higher

grades, so we’ve just got to get the runs on the board for them to bowl at.” The Roar won their opening round match against St Andrews with the bowlers doing the job as they defended just 104. He was happy with how new captain Stephen Treweek went in his first game in the role. The Roar will only get stronger with last season’s captain-coach Craig Ballinger starting the season in the second XI. Yardley said Ballinger remains one of their premier batters, he just needed to get a few hits under his belt to start the season. With an influx of numbers this season, the Roar is fielding an extra senior team, with three teams playing in the VTCA and two in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association. Gerard Hillier will take on a dual role at the Wyndham Devils after being named as the Devils’ Big V women’s state championship coach. Hillier was recently appointed as the association’s player and coach development manager and the experienced coach was last month named the women’s coach. Championship-winning coach Reece Porter previously held both roles before moving to Sydney. Hiller said he was excited to take on the roles. He previously coached Southern Peninsula’s state champ side, has coached at national level in 3x3 and has been part of Basketball Victoria’s high-performance team. “It was something that was flagged early in the interview process,” Hillier said about doing both roles. “I still had to go through the process separately. “I’m pumped to take over what has been such a successful program over the last couple of years, and equally as excited to promote some of the Wyndham local youngsters in to a more senior role within our program to ensure that our success continues well in to the future.” The Devils will start training this week. Hillier said while he’s coached against many of the players, it was good to finally meet them. The core group of local players – Georgia Tauschke, Sam Moodie, Lauren Jones and Jess Slade – are all returning. Hillier said there were a number of new additions, which would likely be announced in the new year. He said they were still clear on what the league will decide in relation to overseas players. The youth league women’s team will join the senior team for the start of pre-season. Hillier said the two teams would work together for several months. “As a coaching group we want six young girls who can slide between the two programs,” he said. “We’ll look to see who best suits that role.” John Dorge, who was appointed for the 2020 season, remains the men’s coach. Name change reflects club diversity Victorian Turf Cricket Association club Footscray Angliss hopes its name change will better reflect its diversity. The club, which will celebrate its 90th anniversary next year changed its name from Footscray ANA during the off season. The change was first raised by vice-president Rohan James at the club’s annual general meeting in July and was discussed with members, life members, Cricket Victoria, Cricket Australia and Maribyrnong council. ANA stood for the Australian Natives’ Association, which was formed in the 1870s and was limited to white men born in Australia. “I brought it up as it was a personal issue for me,” James said. “I found the ANA and linkage to the white Australia policy … quite disrespectful to the
nation’s first people. The diversity at our club is massive … I didn’t think a name like ANA represented our club.” James’ point hit a nerve with new junior co-ordinator Michael Cox. Cox, who has been involved at the club for 35 years, has been trying to set up the club’s first all-girls team. “From what Rohan and his brother Jason shared at the AGM, I thought my possibility of inclusion for everyone was contradicted by the Australian Natives Association acronym. “If we want a women’s team, this association would not have allowed them to take on leadership roles, I saw that as contradicting what our club is about. “I couldn’t really fathom the idea. We’re such an inclusive club and these things are going

New era for Clubbers For the first time in a long time, there’s a little bit of an unknown factor surrounding Yarraville Club in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division. A perennial grand finalist and premiership contender, the Clubbers have had a summer of change. They’ve got a new captain-coach in Mitch Johnstone, while three of the club’s biggest names – Emmett Bronca, Andrew Cullen and Adam Contessa – have all retired. They were hit for another loss when former state player Will Sheridan decided that he couldn’t commit a month out from the season. Johnstone sees the changes as a challenge, but also an opportunity. “It’s a little bit of an unknown how we will go this year,” he said. “We’ve got an established senior core, but it’s the young faces that are just as exciting. “We might sneak under the radar in an even competition. Anyone can beat anyone and the shorter the format, normally means the closer the competition.”

Johnstone is the big inclusion into the side, having played second XI premier cricket for Essendon in recent years. Chris Martin, who has captained Geelong West, is the other big in. Martin, an all-rounder, will help offset the loss of Sheridan. Johnstone said other players would get more opportunities with the key departures. “There’s guys who have played in the twos and guys who played in the ones and played bits and pieces roles,” he said. “Now they might bat in the top four and bowl first change. There’s opportunities that aren’t normally there. “The guys are excited. Daniel Janka played on the weekend and didn’t get a whole lot of opportunities, but has done everything right. “Guys like Luke Destito, Connor Poulton and Allister Powell. They’ve had fantastic pre-seasons and will be thrown in the deep end. “To play finals we need them to go to the next level.” Despite the change over in the team, Johnstone said they were keen to keep the high standards intact on the field. Since the 2003-04 season, the Clubbers have made 14 grand finals, winning 10 of them. The Clubbers made last season’s grand final which was cancelled halfway through due to COVID-19. The Clubbers were the higher-ranked team in the final, but St Albans was awarded the premiership after it successfully appealed the result due to the wickets being worked on overnight between day one and two.

Williamstown has started its list announcements for next season with a bang, adding two former AFL players to its squad. Former Hawthorn player Teia Miles and Greater Western Sydney big man Tom Downie were announced as new signings last week ahead of the new-look VFL and East Coast second-tier competition. Miles played 12 games for Hawthorn before being delisted at the end of 2019. He put in some strong performances at AFL and VFL level and is known for his elite work rate and ability to use the ball. Seagulls general manager of football Stephen Soulsby said they were pleased to sign Mileswho who had signed with Geelong’s VFL side for 2020 before the season didn’t go ahead. “To have someone of Teia’s calibre come on board for 2021 is a great outcome for us,” Soulsby said. “He’s someone that can cover a number of positions for us, gives us plenty of versatility around the ground and will continue to set high standards around our club.” Downie played nine matches for the Giants before retiring in 2016. He played with Victorian Amatuer Football Association club Old Scotch last year and led them to a Premier B grand final. He kicked 37 goals and was named in the team of the year and won the GT Moore Medal as the competition’s best and fairest player. Standing at 203 centimetres, Downie is a major coup for the Seagulls as a big-bodied leading ruckman who can float forward and damage the scoreboard. Soulsby said Downie’s character will have a profound impact for Williamstown both on and off the field. “Having Tom come on board is really exciting for us heading into the 2021 season,” he said. “His ability to play as a ruck/forward gives us a really dynamic look working alongside Joel Ottavi and will be a valuable asset to our midfield group with his experience at AFL level.” The Seagulls are yet to announce a coach for next season, with Andy Collins standing down after taking on a full-time teaching position. He has since signed with the Box Hill Hawks as an assistant coach. In other news at the Seagulls, women’s coach Penny Cula-Reid has been reappointed for the 2021 season. Tara Murray
