In an Australian first, 650 students will next month graduate from Victoria University after completing their studies in block mode. Block teaching, introduced at VU in 2018, enables students to study one subject at a time in a four-week “block”. Imogen Hair is among the class of 2020, earning a bachelor of business with a major in event management. “It 100 per cent benefited me,” she said of the block model. “I did have an experience overseas doing a regular model and the comparison was actually very interesting.” Block teaching has been credited with helping students who struggle with their course and has led to an increase in pass rates and attendance at VU. In the first year, 86 per cent of students passed compared with 74 per cent the previous year before its introduction. The little rink that could, can no more. It is the end of an era with the closure of one of Melbourne’s original roller skating rinks at Laverton. Laverton Skate Centre, which opened in 1983 as West End Roller Disco, is a COVID casualty, according to operator for the past eight years, Bryan Bergman. Mr Bergman said the centre had been closed since March but it was the second lockdown that sounded the death knell. “The final nail in the coffin was Melbourne’s second wave,” he said. “We were gearing up to reopen and then the second wave came along and it hit us between the eyes. We were already
on the ropes, as were the other rinks. “Melbourne was in a good position in June and then the wheels fell off.” Laverton resident since 1964, Giuseppe ‘Joe’ Inserra, 84, owns the building and founded the centre. “I’ve been very happy to give to our community the roller skating rink for a very long time,” he said. “I feel it’s a privilege to give this service to our community between Werribee and Hobsons Bay. It’s sad to close it down.” Its closure leaves Sunshine with the only traditional roller skating rink in the west. In a poignant Facebook post, Mr Bergman thanked parents for “patiently sitting rinkside

Bulldogs’ pokies deal a safe bet By Goya Dmytyshchak The Western Bulldogs have officially left the pokies industry after a gaming machine handover was finalised last week. The Melbourne Racing Club has bought the licences for 65 gaming machines at Club Leeds in Footscray and the Peninsula Club in Dromana for “a seven figure sum”. While the deal was struck last November, its completion was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Part of the money will be used to fund
the $58 million Bulldogs’ Whitten Oval redevelopment, which the state government has pledged $36.6million toward. The Bulldogs will retain ownership of freehold land at the Peninsula Club and continue to be the landlord. Bulldogs chief executive Ameet Bains said the club had a long history of delivering programs to improve men’s and women’s health, and felt ownership of gaming machines was “inconsistent”. “It’s a proud day for our football club to now be formally out of the gaming industry,” he

said. “When we made the decision to exit gaming, we wanted to ensure we were still going to be financially prosperous into the future. “Thanks to some pleasing financial results over the last decade, and some meticulous planning for the future, we can move forward
with optimism to offset the loss of funds we were receiving from gaming machines. “With the gaming sale, combined with a generous funding boost from the state government, we’re thrilled to be able to push ahead with construction on our redevelopment next year once design work is complete.” The redevelopment includes a new EJ Whitten Stand and broadcast-quality lights to allow AFLW games to be shown on television in high definition. Plans for the project have been submitted to Maribyrnong council.
Tests urged for Altona residents Coronavirus testing continues to be offered in response to a positive wastewater sample in Altona late on Friday. The Department of Health and Human Services is advising residents and people who visited Altona and surrounds between November 16 and 18 to be tested for COVID-19, even with the mildest of symptoms. Suburbs in the wastewater catchment include Altona, Altona Meadows, Laverton, Point Cook and Sanctuary Lakes. The DHHS said the find was unexpected given it had been about eight weeks since the last known resident in the area had a coronavirus illness or diagnosis. The locations of local testing sites are on the DHHS website. It comes as Victoria recorded its 24th day of no new cases or deaths from the virus and restrictions were eased again on Monday. Fifteen visitors are allowed to homes and can be split across different times. Fifty people can gather outdoors. Weddings, funerals and religious ceremonies indoors can have 150 people. Indoors, smaller hospitality venues can have one person for every two square metres, up to 50 customers. Bigger venues can have 150 people and the total venue capacity indoors and outside will rise to 300. QR code record keeping will be mandatory. Cinemas, galleries and museums can have 150 people indoors. For sports, 150 people are allowed indoors with group sizes of up to 20 and 500 outdoors with groups up to 50.
Siblings set sail Point Cook siblings Atticus and Ashlea are cutting a path in the world of sailing. The brother and sister, who are aged 12 and 10 respectively, took up the sport two years ago. They won top spot for the Green Fleet at the Australia National Optimist Championships, and first girl and first boy for Green Fleet at the Victorian Optimist Championships, earlier this year. “Green Fleet” refers to a sailing program for primary school-aged children and “optimist” is the small, single-handed sailing dinghy used by children 15 years and under. The siblings’ mum Leah said the youngsters trained twice a week with the Victorian International Optimist Dinghy Association (VIODA). Leah, a VIODA volunteer, said the association was keen to get more children “into sailing in the beautiful waters in the west”. VIODA president Xavier Vandame said most children enjoyed the social aspect of sailing. “What they also learn about is being autonomous and independent, you make your own decisions – to go to the left, to go to the right, to pull the sail or not pull the sail,” he said. Mr Vandame said many young sailors also went on to become good drivers, after learning how to navigate among up to 50 boats in a regatta, plus deal with wind and the tide. Help to thrive not just survive By Michael Clarke, Maribyrnong mayor I am humbled and privileged to have been elected as mayor for this first term of office for our new council and to be Maribyrnong’s first three-term mayor. There is a lot of work to be done to support the community as we move forward through this unprecedented time. We may have finally overcome the yoke of this virus but we’re not out of the woods yet. Our community is hurting and we are here to help our people, our community and our businesses. Council is also working as quickly as it can, within the rules, to return services – the Aquatic Centre and two of our libraries have already reopened. We are also conscious our business community must do more than simply survive – they must thrive for the good of us all – and as a council we have a role to play in that. I am extremely proud of how quickly Maribyrnong has acted to create more outdoor dining opportunities for residents. Parking bays have been repurposed to accommodate outdoor seating; footpath dining has been increased; streets and laneways utilised; and car parks and other vacant land converted to outdoor dining spaces.
Briefs Derrimut death Armed Crime Squad detectives are investigating the death of a 34-year-old Maribyrnong man in Derrimut last week. The man was found deceased on Boundary Road, shortly after 6am on November 19. Police believe the man may have fallen from a motor vehicle seen speeding along Derrimut Drive and Boundary Road just after 11.15pm on November 18. A burglary and shooting at a property in nearby East Derrimut Crescent are also being investigated. Police believe the incidents may be linked to the man’s death. Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
School readiness funding Altona MP Jill Hennessy last week announced that 40 local kindergartens would share in almost $100,000 in funding from the state government. The funding will help support children to participate in kindergarten during term four and prepare them for school.

Move demolition: BRAG
Budget cash for school upgrades
By Goya Dmytryshchak The Brooklyn Residents Action Group is calling for three demolition companies to be moved far away from residential communities, outside the metropolitan area. About 40 per cent of the state’s metals and more than one million tons of materials from the construction and demolition sector are reprocessed on the Brooklyn industrial estate. In a joint letter, BRAG executive members Bert Boere, Laurie Bell and Geoff Mitchelmore state the relocation of demolition companies is necessary “to protect the health and amenity of our residential communities”. BRAG has written to Sustainability Victoria requesting the relocation of three Brooklyn operations, along with the Altona North landfill. The call comes in the wake of a report to the state government, which showed people in the inner west were being hospitalised at higher rates due to poor air quality. The report, Air Pollution in Melbourne’s Inner West – Taking direct action to reduce our community’s exposure, was released in September and makes 26 recommendations with 65 suggested actions. “The recently released report commissioned by the state government … identifies the issues from which the inner west communities are suffering, especially in Brooklyn and Yarraville, particularly those which are impacted by the resource recovery industries in the Brooklyn industrial precinct,” the letter states. “The primary dust sources are the crushing operations and site stockpiles on each of the three demolition company sites in the Brooklyn industrial precinct. “Secondary dust sources are from the trucks that operate out of these sites. In 2016, the state government arranged for Jones and Bunting
Footscray Primary School has received $18.2 million in the state budget to fund an upgrade catering for an extra 200 children in 2023. Footscray MP Katie Hall said it built on $2.249 million already awarded through the Infrastructure Planning and Acceleration Fund. “Families in Footscray have done a phenomenal job in supporting students to learn from home,” she said. “As kids return to their classrooms, we want to make Footscray Primary School better than before.” Altona College, formerly Altona P-9 College, has been allocated $3.556 million to deliver stage two of the school’s masterplan, including an upgrade of the learning community wing. After announcing its expansion in 2018, the school will teach year 12 students for the first time next year. Education Minister James Merlino said the government’s investment in schools would drive post-COVID economic recovery. “This is an investment in our kids and their future because every child, no matter where they go to school, deserves access to state-of-the-art facilities,” he said. “Schools are the heart of our communities, so it makes sense that we’re investing in upgrades to support local jobs to drive our economic recovery.”

When the COVID-19 restrictions were put in place and residents were asked to stay home, Maribyrnong City Council took a number of measures to help residents through this challenging period, which included not enforcing timed ‘green zone’ restrictions. With the easing of restrictions, there are more cars back on our roads. This means we need to manage timed parking in green zones again as we want drivers to park safely and share parking spaces. We thank the community for observing the timed green zones and enforcement of these zones will resume from 14 December 2020.
Nearly one million Victorians with gym membership from this week are finally able to exercise without having to book in online and abide by time restrictions. Fitness Australia chief executive Barrie Elvish has welcomed the state government’s decision to allow gyms and other indoor fitness facilities to have up to 100 people, class sizes of up to 20 people and a density quota of one person per four square metres. Masks are still required for low-intensity activity but not for cardio workouts. “As an industry, we have strict COVID-Safe protocols in place to protect everyone and businesses will do whatever is required to keep members and staff safe,” Mr Elvish said. “The last thing these businesses want is to be shut down again.”

Her gym reopened on November 9. “Being able to just give back to our community, being able to offer that service to our community – especially in Altona – it’s just been amazing … seeing everyone so happy and just how much they have missed the gym,” she said. “This is a huge part of people’s lives. Come along for the ride By Goya Dmytryshchak A Williamstown North business that restored an EJ Holden for the EJ Whitten Foundation and documented the journey for TV has now produced a series about the day-to-day operations of its car restoration workshop. Co-owners of Restos and Rods Garage, Dec McKearney and partner Sam Martin, have produced Australia’s first car restoration television show called Resto my Ride. The show is the first Australian series to be acquired by 9Rush and season one will have six one-hour episodes, premiering with episode
one titled, EJ for EJ. “We have a lot of firsts up our sleeve with Resto my Ride, but this one really is a huge achievement for us,” Ms Martin said. “Being the first show acquired by Nine for the partnership, especially during these tough times, really shows how well received the content is by the network powerhouse. “Plus, we are thrilled to be able to bring it to Aussie audiences on free to air.” Resto my Ride has already been broadcast in the US on Discovery’s Motor Trend Network. “Our fans in America loved the Aussie cars we have in the series,” Ms Martin said.
In the season premiere, Mr McKearney commits to building an EJ Holden for the EJ Whitten charity in just nine weeks. Running out of time, he has to call in his buddies to help finish the build in time. He gets a huge surprise from his dad and works with AFL footy legends Ted Whitten Jnr, Sam Newman, Robert ‘Dipper’ DiPierdomenico, Billy Brownless, Doug Hawkins and Sam Kekovich. “You will see and recognise many places and probably a few local faces as you watch the series,” Mr McKearney said. Maribyrnong council is starting Christmas celebrations early with a photo competition, inviting people to show how they are preparing for festivities. Entrants can send in their best “festive spirit selfie” to go in the draw to win a visit from Santa. The winner will see Santa arrive in a vintage fire truck, spreading good cheer with the jingle of bells. The council is also calling on carollers and singers to be part of a music video. Local artists, including Rebecca Barnard, have written and recorded a Maribyrnong 12 days of Christmas e-carol. 12 years jail for terror crimes By Goya Dmytryshchak and Benjamin Millar A Braybrook man has been sentenced to 12 years’ jail for planning terror attacks and preparing a handbook for terrorists. Phillip Galea, 36, was sentenced in the Supreme Court on Friday. In December 2019, he became Australia’s first right-wing extremist to be found guilty of
planning and preparing a terror attack under federal anti-terrorism laws. During his jury trial, it emerged Galea planned to target a left-wing rally with chemical bombs. He had looked up the addresses of a range of ‘left-wing’ targets, including the union movement’s Trades Hall headquarters, the Socialist Alliance’s Resistance Centre and the Melbourne Anarchists Club.
The jury also found Galea guilty of producing an instruction manual he called the Patriot’s Cookbook, which prosecutors described as a how-to guide for terrorists. In her sentencing remarks, Justice Elizabeth Hollingworth said Galea was not being punished for his “radical right-wing views” but for “the violent means by which you contemplated promoting your beliefs”. She said Galea, who was a member of
Reclaim Australia and the True Blue Crew, had proposed to blow up his targeted buildings with Molotov cocktails. His Ballarat Road property was raided by counter-terrorism police in August 2016. The court heard he had spent most of the past four years in custody in solitary confinement due to the nature of his crimes. He must serve at least nine years of his 12-year sentence before being eligible for parole.
Teens give back Hobsons Bay teenagers are taking part in the ‘Teens Give Back’ Christmas campaign, filling hundreds of bags with food and essential items for Christmas. The bags will be delivered to West Welcome Wagon, a not-for-profit organisation supporting asylum seekers in the community. The appeal is co-ordinated by a network of parents raising teens, called Bubbling Up! Parent Julie Noonan said teenagers across Hobsons Bay would fill bags with much-needed items at a time of year when many were struggling. “It’s so important, particularly in a COVID environment, for our teenagers to understand the contribution they can make in their own community,” she said. “It is supported by Compton Green Williamstown and local schools, including Williamstown High School, who have all students across the Pascoe and Bayview campuses filling bags this year.” Suitable items include toiletry necessities, non-perishable food and children’s items such

MY PLACE Adriana Nicu owns L’uccellino Italian restaurant in Yarraville Village. When the coronavirus struck, she was instrumental in persuading Maribyrnong council to close Ballarat Street to create more outdoor dining space. She speaks with Goya Dmytrshchak. What’s your connection to the city of Maribyrnong? I’ve lived in Yarraville and Spotswood since 1997. I’ve run a business for about 12 years.
I contacted the council upon receipt of an email suggesting ‘parklets’ (turning parking spaces into dining areas), which I didn’t think were suitable for our space. I then recommended the street to be closed and have the eateries have dining out in the street. I submitted a basic drawing with some pictures showing them what I envisage for our space and council loved the idea – and the rest is history. We have achieved an amazing result with great feedback from locals and diners. How have things changed for you during the COVID-19 situation and lockdowns? L’uccellino was shut for the entire period since March until November. It’s a very challenging situation in many aspects of the business. What do you like about Yarraville and what are some of your favourite places? I absolutely love the feel and vibe of the Yarraville Village. The Sun Theatre, Maribyrnong River, Footscray Park, up-and-coming Seddon. The mixture of the heritage and contemporary buildings, an array of little bars and eateries, quirky retail shops creating a funky vibe.

Many streets have been tree-lined by council … certainly brings a little European feel to it.

successful corporate career to hospitality? My father was a passionate chef for 40 years; he sadly passed away last year. But that’s the connection. Diversity of skills always works well in business. In life, everything is possible if you are willing to work hard for it and block out the noise of the ‘naysayers’.

Finding a good personal trainer As the weather warms up and the COVID restrictions continue easing, you may notice an influx of personal training groups around your local area – and you may even be interested in joining one of them. But, how do you know which group and which personal trainer will be the best fit for you? There is such a wide scope of experience and areas of expertise within personal training – so it is really going to depend on exactly what you are hoping to achieve. This is the first thing you need to do: become clear on your own health and fitness goals. What are you hoping to achieve? When are you hoping to achieve it by? How much time can you dedicate? Once you know this, you can be armed with better information to help you consider the rest of these handy tips:

Feel free to ask a trainer about this – they should be able to tell you about the past few courses they did and how that will help them help you.

Williamstown identity releases long-awaited novel In October 1993, Jim McIntyre spent five days trapped inside his Moscow apartment while tens of thousands of pro-parliament demonstrators marched in the streets below, protesting against Boris Yeltsin’s economic reforms. The clash came to a bloody head and 147 people died in the 10-day conflict. Army tanks rolled through the streets surrounding Moscow’s White House. Jim recalls the moment the TV stations went off air. From his window he could see the city smoking like burnt toast. Back in Williamstown, Jim wrote his novel Nikolai the Perfect – a book that has taken him the best part of 30 years to complete. A year to remember for Year 12 students Ray Pisani, Principal of Marian College, notes that this year has been challenging for all people around the world, especially so in a school setting. Students have found school life very different. Some have thrived through remote learning while others have found it to be a struggle in their learning and wellbeing. “For our Year 12s, their final year of secondary school has been disrupted and they haven’t had the opportunity to experience many of the important occasions that make the year special. “Brigidine Celebration Day, the annual athletics day, the school musical production, Year 12 Retreat, College assemblies, Leadership Program, Awards Night, graduation ceremony, the end-of-year 12 Celebration Day as well as the learning program have all required a re-imagining of how these events and activities could be realised. “It is important to acknowledge the resilience and creativity of the Senior Student Leadership Group who, with support of peers and staff, was able to ensure that the majority of the events could be held in some way. “Marian College was able to organise a Graduation Ceremony and Celebration Day. Graduation was streamed into family homes and the night incorporated a prayer liturgy, the presentation of the graduands with their certificates, and addresses by the Principal, and the College Lamp Bearers (school captains), Dahlia Cremona and Farah Besisou. “The Year 12’s Celebration Day had the students dressed up in costumes and sharing a prepared breakfast together. They also affirmed the value of the experience they have shared over the years at Marian by presenting to the entire student body a celebration video they produced.

“This day incorporates the announcement of the new Lamp Bearers and this year the “handing over of the Lamp of Learning” was live streamed into classrooms. The special moment was especially poignant this year - we all desperately need a sign of hope, light and promise for the future. “The final part of Celebration Day was the official farewell that would normally include
a guard of honour by all students and staff. We were still able to say our goodbyes but on a smaller scale, with the wonder of technology coming to support in transmitting the farewell to the rest of the school. “This year has been very hard for many and we are very aware that, especially for our Year 12s, it has been challenging. SPORT Sunshine United to make most of second chance Sunshine United is hoping to make the most of a second chance in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division. The Tigers finished seventh last season and were to be relegated, but earned a reprieve when the top division was expanded to 10 teams. Tigers president Mark Dalrymple said they were looking forward to making the most of a second shot in the top grade. “Had we been relegated it would have been really tough,” he said. “We would have taken the medicine, but we did a little bit better than the results indicated. “It was wise to move back to 10 teams, so it’s not so cut through. “We have a second chance and we’re looking forward to it. You still have to perform on the day.” Wanting to make an impact, the Tigers added a couple of key players to strengthen the side. The biggest move was signing Kaushal Lokuarachchi, who had been playing for rival senior division team Keilor.
Lokuarachchi, who is an assistant coach this season, averaged nearly 45 with the bat last season, making the second most runs in the division. He also chipped in with 21 wickets. Dalrymple said one of the main reasons they recruited the former Sri Lankan test player was to help them stay up in the top grade. Former captain-coach Neetan Chouhan returns after several seasons off. He will skipper the side. The third key addition is Michael Glowacki, who after a couple of injury-interrupted seasons, is fit and firing and ready for a big season. “They are three good recruits which is exciting … they’ve been around a while and played a lot of cricket,” Dalrymple said. “With our other core players we have a lot of experience.” Dalrymple said there had been plenty of players at training with people keen to get back into sport after lockdown.
They managed to get in a couple of practice matches before the season got underway, which was a good test of the COVID-19 protocols., he said. Dalrymple said they expected the one-day format this season to suit the side. They faced Aberfeldie in the opening round of the season on Saturday. The Tigers last week also kicked off their T20 campaign with a win against Sunshine YCW. The Tigers bowled YCW out for 53, with Lokuarachchi taking three wickets. It was easy work in the run chase, the Tigers finishing 1-54 off 10 overs. Dalrymple said the T20 competition remained a big focus this season. Roosters up to the test By Tara Murray Altona Roosters are keen to keep their strong form from recent years intact in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 1 season. After five finals series in six years across multiple divisions, the Roosters will be expected to be one of the teams to watch in an expanded division 1 competition this season. Captain-coach Ash Peters said he was backing the group to have another strong season. “Training has been really good,” he said. “We’ve had six or seven sessions in the lead up and a practice match. We’ve played finals the last three years and won the premiership from fourth in 2018-19. “We’ve got a good balance in recent years and I’m backing our boys in.” Despite making finals in their first season in division 1, Peters admits they were slightly disappointed after last season, when they were knocked out in the semi finals. Playing in division 1 west, the Roosters finished on top of the ladder. All four finalists had the same number of wins. Peters said had they made the grand final against Aberfeldie, they were confident they could have beaten them in the grand final. There will be changes to the squad for this season, with a couple of players stepping away. Jayodh Hennayake won’t play due to work commitments, while Mark Longhurst has left to play elsewhere with friends. Peters said those two departures would open spots in the batting order in the top side. He said there were a few blokes pushing for opportunities. Veeral Patel, who joined the club last season after walking in off the street looking for a club close to home, and Nathan Moon are two players that will be among those looking to fill those spots. Peters said they were looking forward to a couple of different challenges that have been thrown at them this season. The first being teams from division 1 west and north coming together in a merged competition. “We’ve played most of them the last few years in the lower divisions,” he said. “It’s a real good test having to play those teams again after a couple of years. It’s exciting.” The other challenge will be getting used to playing one-day games. Usually, there’s a mixture of one-day and two-day games, but due to COVID-19 all matches this season are one-day games. Peters said while it suits his game personally, it was 50-50 among his teammates whether it

suited their games. “Being one-dayers, you can’t be off the ball for five to seven overs,” he said. “The game changes dramatically if you’re not on your game for the whole overs.”

Centrals on the rise Melton Centrals has benefited from players looking to get out of the house and play some sport ahead of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 4 season. Like many clubs, the Centrals have had an influx of people returning to the sport after spending a large chunk of the year in lockdown. Centrals captain Adam Hulett said they were putting in an extra team this season due to an increase in numbers. “It’s good enough just to be out of the house, let alone playing cricket,” he said. “The whole club is keen to be out there and we’ve even got a fifth side, which is credit to the club. “It’s been a few years since we’ve had five teams.” The top two sides will play in the VTCA and the other three in Gisborne and District Cricket Association. Hulett said there would be some additions to each side, making every team stronger. Keeper-batsman Bradley Coulson, who played two games last season, has returned and will play the full season. Lahiru Kumara has come across from Ferntree Gully Footballers Cricket Club and looks to be a good cricketer. Hulett said a couple of returning players had brought some friends across too. “There’s a good spread across the grades,” he said. “We’re retained all the players from the top grade and we added a couple of players in and it will filter down through the grades. “It adds depth and it will help create a bit more competition for those in the top grade to retain their spots.” Centrals will be in division 4 for a second straight season. In their first season at that level, they finished seventh with four wins. Hulett said they would like to make finals, but there a plenty of unknowns in a competition which will be one-day matches only this season. “We don’t know too much about what other teams have with players,” he said. “For all we know they have recruited well and developed more kids. “Ideally the goal is to play finals.” Centrals started their season on Saturday against Williamstown Congs. Coaching duo appointed to Spotwood’s women’s side The successful coaching partnership of Ian Allan and Chris Grant will continue, with the pair appointed co-coaches of Spotswood’s women’s football side. Having coached the under-15 girls and then under-18 girls teams at the club the past five years, the pair has taken teams to grand finals in four of those years, with the fifth season, 2020, cancelled due to COVID-19. They take on a senior team that won the 2019 Western Region Football League women’s premiership under inaugural coach Theo Theodorou. Allan said they were keen to continue building on what they had been doing with the youth girls. “Last year we had four or five girls go up into the women’s team, this year it’s close to 20 players coming up,” Allan said. “We want to make that transition easier and continue building what is best for those girls.
We want to make sure they feel wanted and comfortable with everything. “There’s some good development ahead of the group.” Allan said having co-coaches was unique, but they worked really well together. He said they were like yin and yang when it comes to coaching. “We think we have done pretty well,” he said. “The girls enjoy playing and we just love it and have the passion for it and seeing the girls improve. “We’re so excited to go on for the next challenge.” While Allan’s daughter is in the Spotswood women’s team, Grant has continued on at the club even though his daughter Isabella is no longer there. Isabella was drafted by the Western Bulldogs in 2019 under the father-daughter rule. Grant played 341 games for the Bulldogs and is the club’s football department director.
Allan said Grant wanted to continue to share his passion for football. “Chris has a passion for girls’ footy. He has built strong relationships at the club and girls love having him around. “It’s a bonus to have someone of that level. “The girls are really excited Chris and myself are coming on board, along with the guys who support us.” Allan said they would start pre-season next year when they were allowed. He said despite the success of the girls’ and women’s sides at the club, their motto hasn’t changed. “We’ve played in four grand finals in a row, but that wasn’t the aim. “For us, it’s that every girl takes the opportunity to play a role in the team. Hawks hunt for new players
By Tara Murray Western Jets draft hopeful Eddie Ford didn’t sit on his hands this year while there was no football. Keen to put his best foot forward and keep his name in front of recruiters, the utility looked at other ways to improve his game. It included contacting AFL clubs to help him out. “I asked Fremantle for some vision of Nat Fyfe and a couple of other clubs for vision of their players to just show their inside work, how they work in contested footy in the midfield and running patterns as well,” he said. “I try and base my game on the best players to get the best out of it. Nat Fyfe is obviously a cracking player with two Brownlows under his belt. “I got a bit of vision of him, which was good to see how he plays the game.” Ford’s work wasn’t just restricted to studying visio. He also set up a gym at his dad’s place to help him keep fit. He said he had managed to keep himself in pretty good shape. “I stayed up-to-date with running and fitness,” he said. “It was pretty average, hard not playing something you love doing, especially through the winter months and early spring months – it’s what you do. I’ve been doing it for nine, 10 years. “I guess I had the combine in mind to stay fit and I’m a pretty active bloke. I was running four to five times a week and the only thing I missed out on was the game awareness sort of stuff.” Ford said that he tested pretty well at the combine, including having the equal highest vertical jump on the board that day. Those results and his performances last season have seen the Yarraville-Seddon Eagles player speak to about 14 clubs. “Hopefully it’s a good indication of what is to come and they’ve all been pretty good, I think they like me,” he said. “I ended my season pretty well last year and played the all-star game and had a good game according to some people. “I would have liked to have had a more consistent season as a bottom ager and I think the two pre-seasons games for this season showed glimpses. “If I was to get drafted, I would take the opportunity on-board and make the most of it.” Ford said one of his strengths going into the draft is his flexibility and ability to play multiple positions. While he’s played a lot down forward in recent years, he’s more than capable of having an impact in the midfield. He said he’s happy to play in any position to achieve his dream of being an AFL player. “I’ve been wanting to play more midfield lately as I didn’t get the biggest crack at it last

year, unfortunately,” he said. “I grew up playing a lot of my footy in the midfield, forward and that was my role. I guess the thing I wanted to show clubs is my versatility and being able to play any position. “Growing up I played back, midfield and

forward. There was a grand final once when I was in under-15s and there was a really strong wind, I would swap between forward and back to be around the footy.” “I enjoy playing midfield and enjoy kicking a goal as well.”
Woodend-Hesket netballers have returned to the court with a spring in their step after a season of without netball. Riddell District Netball League was cancelled due to COVID-19, leaving netballers on the sidelines for much of 2020. However with restrictions easing, the Hawks are training in preparation for next season, under Carly Arkinstall. Arkinstall was appointed the Hawks head coach for the 2020 season before being reappointed for next year. Arkinstall is looking forward to having a full pre-season with the group. “We had 12 girls at the first session and there were four new faces, which was really great to start with,” she said. “It was great to see them and hopefully we’ll have a few more at training over the coming weeks. “Coming in late for this year, in terms of trials and preparation, wasn’t ideal. “It’s now a really great chance to get to know them and understand where the gaps are and be productive in sourcing other players.” Arkinstall said a number of players who were due to play in 2020 are set to return. A few of the girls who had been playing under-19s and A-grade, led by Sarah Duff, would now only play A-grade which should benefit the team. Arkinstall said they had a few things in the pipeline in terms of possible new players. “Things are moving faster than we thought and there’s some exciting leads with respect to strong players coming out of the Victorian Netball League and interstate leagues. Arkinstall said they were still looking for other players who might be interested in joining the club and invited prospective players to join a training session. The Hawks coaching panel remains the same with Anne-Louise Lindner coaching the C-grade side and Kellie Duff coaching the under-19s. Arkinstall said they were set to have a strong under-19 team which is hoping to claim its first premiership. Rupertswood, which has won every under-19 premiership previously, is no longer in the competition, opening the door for the Hawks.
