The route for the Melbourne Airport Rail Link has been set following a historic agreement between the state and federal governments. Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Premier Daniel Andrews on Saturday announced that airport trains would run through the Metro Tunnel and the majority of Victorians could get to the airport with just one interchange from their closest station. Melbourne’s west will have direct airport access via a single interchange at Sunshine station, or Footscray station for Werribee and Williamstown line passengers. Construction on the rail link will begin in

2022, with a target completion date of 2029. The multi-billion-dollar project will take travellers into the heart of the CBD in less than 30 minutes and connect Victoria’s regional and metropolitan rail networks to the airport for the first time. Brimbank mayor Ranka Rasic welcomed the Melbourne Airport Rail Link announcement, calling it an unprecedented opportunity for lasting and positive change. “This is much more than a transport project,” Cr Rasic said. “Through job creation and economic growth, we will be on the way to recovery from COVID-19 and on track to see Sunshine become the economic powerhouse of the west.

Councillor Ranka Rasic elected new Brimbank Mayor Cr Ranka Rasic will lead Brimbank for the next 12 months after being elected by her fellow Councillors on 17 November 2020. This is Cr Rasic’s first time as Mayor and also her first time as a Brimbank Councillor. Cr Rasic said she looked forward to the opportunity to lead Council, and thanked everyone who had supported her, and also her fellow Councillors for voting her in as Mayor. She said that she wanted to continue the special legacy of inclusion that is embodied in Brimbank. She also looked forward to the important task of improving and enhancing the municipality to ensure the best possible quality of life for the community, and supporting and advocating for Brimbank through the process of recovery from the COVID-19 crisis.

Mask rules, restrictions relaxed By Esther Lauaki Masks are no longer compulsory outdoors and Brimbank residents can welcome up to 15 visitors in their homes as the state takes its biggest steps yet towards ‘Covid normal. The Victorian government on Sunday announced the new rules that will apply to the state. Premier Daniel Andrews foreshadowed a number of significant changes including changes to mask-wearing rules, household visits and patron limits at hospitality and

entertainment venues. From this week, masks are not required outdoors where people can physically distance but they are required indoors – workplaces, shopping, public transport, hospital and ride shares – and Victorians must carry a mask at all times. Up to 15 visitors per day are also permitted in homes, with infants under 12 months old not included in the cap. The changes come as Victoria clocked up 23 days without new infections. There remains

And the clearest evidence there is of our determination to not only get on top of this virus – but to squash it,” Mr Andrews said. “Outdoor gatherings in a public place – the park, the beach – will increase to 50. “For those couples who’ve had to delay their special day, weddings will increase to 150 people. The same number will apply to funerals and religious ceremonies indoors. “There’ll be changes for our hospitality

sector too. For smaller venues, the density limit will change to one person for every two square metres – up to 50 customers.” In hospitality, QR code record-keeping will be mandatory and for bigger venues, the density limit will stay the same but the cap will increase to 150 and total venue capacity will rise to 300. Cinemas, galleries and museums will also be able to host up to 150 people indoors. “We’ll have more to say about what a ‘COVIDSafe summer’ will look like in the next few weeks,” Mr Andrews said.

Death, burglary ‘likely’ linked

Armed Crime Squad detectives are investigating the death of a man in Derrimut last week. A 34-year-old Maribyrnong man was found dead on Boundary Road shortly after 6am on November 19. Police believe the man may have fallen from a motor vehicle in East Derrimut Crescent. The death was not being treated as a homicide. A burglary and shooting at a property in East Derrimut Crescent are also being investigated. Police believe the incidents are likely linked to the man’s death. Witnesses told police they observed a white van speeding along Derrimut Drive and Boundary Road with the rear door open just after 11.15pm on November 18. It is believed the man may have fallen from the van. Detectives are keen to speak to anyone who was in the Derrimut area between 8pm on November 18 and 1am on November 19 and may have witnessed the incident or have dash cam footage. Darryl Leech’s winning artwork will be showcased as a mural in one of Melbourne’s laneways, and he says he has the Sunshine Primary School community to thank for it. The grade 5/6 teacher, who runs a weekly drawing club at lunchtimes, won a recent art competition as part of a promotion for The Elder Scrolls online video game series. His drawing made it through a selection phase and went on to win a community vote to have it painted as a mural in Caledonian Lane in the CBD. Mr Leech said he owed his victory to the supportive school community. “I won and it was in large part due to the parent and staff community at Sunshine Primary School casting their votes and supporting my goal,” he said. “It was pretty cool to see how quickly our community got behind it in boosting my votes. “If it wasn’t for their votes I wouldn’t have won.” Mr Leech’s entry was inspired by one of his comic book icons. “I went for an old school comic book/Conan the Barbarian vibe – I immediately thought of [American fantasy and science fiction artist] Frank Frazetta’s work when coming up with an idea,” he said. “I just hope people think it’s cool and enjoy looking at it when the mural is up.”

Cr Rasic was elected as mayor by her fellow councillors at the new council’s first official meeting after being sworn in earlier this month. The first-time councillor said she looked forward to the opportunity to lead and thanked everyone who had supported her. “I am very grateful for the opportunity to represent the best municipality in Victoria,” Cr Rasic said. “When I migrated to Australia in the ‘90s, Brimbank became my home. “I want to continue the special legacy of inclusion that is embodied in our city. “As mayor of Brimbank I look forward to the important tasks we have before us, of improving and enhancing our city to ensure the best possible quality of life for our

community, and of supporting and advocating for Brimbank through the process of recovery from the COVID-19 crisis. “It will be my privilege to lead our council as we work with our community to make Brimbank a better place for all.” In the October local government elections, Cr Rasic campaigned to bring change to council and pledged to lobby for the duplication of Taylors Road, upgrades to Calder Park Drive, fix Sydenham Road and car parks at the council-owned road near Watergardens station. Newcomer to lead Brimbank council

Thousands of car owners in the west are driving around with deadly Takata airbags in their vehicles, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has warned. ACCC data reveals there are still 589 vehicles in Hoppers Crossing with Takata airbags which need replacing, 575 vehicles in Point Cook and 449 vehicles in St Albans. Sunshine West is home to 431 cars which need the airbags replaced, Caroline Springs has 430 vehicles fitted with the airbags, Hillside 238 vehicles and Melton 271 vehicles. The airbags are the subject of a recall after being associated with more than 330 injuries and 30 deaths worldwide. Under the recall, vehicle owners are entitled to have their faulty Takata airbags replaced free of charge. ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard said the Takata airbags “are very dangerous and have the potential to explode with too much force, even in low-speed accidents, sending sharp metal fragments into the vehicle at high speed, potentially killing or seriously injuring its occupants”. Budget cash to help slash energy bills Spending more time at home this year has meant bigger power bills for many Brimbank households. That is why the state government has pledged to help residents cover the cost of their power bills and make homes more energy-efficient, with a $797 million investment to be included in today’s state budget. The investment includes $335 million to replace old wood, electric or gas-fired heaters with new energy-efficient systems that are safer and cheaper to run, while also driving down emissions. Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the program will be open to low-income earners and save 250,000 households between $300 to $900 each year on their energy bills. “Most Victorians have spent more time at home this year – and more on power bills – than they ever have. That’s why we’re helping those struggling to pay their bills and making homes across the state more energy efficient,” Ms D’Ambrosio said. “This pandemic has been hard enough without worrying about whether you can pay the power bill. “Not only will we help cover that cost – we’ll help Victorians make their home more efficient and fight climate change.” A further $112 million will seal windows and doors, and upgrade heating, cooling and hot water in 35,000 social housing properties – slashing bills and making homes more comfortable. Ms D’Ambrosio said, to reduce energy bills for tenants, the government would introduce minimum efficiency standards for rental properties.

Brimbank students will take to the screen in the upcoming Victorian State Schools Spectacular. The 25th anniversary show pivots and pirouettes into a television format for 2020, which will be broadcast by the Seven Network later this year. Parkwood Green, St Albans Meadows and Keilor Heights primary schools will be among those performing at the annual event. While the live arena event cannot proceed, this year’s modified, alternative performance outcome has inspired more than 2000 students to put in much effort during a time of upheaval in their lives. This year’s spectacular features performances reflecting themes of resilience, rising up and the art of connection. Victorian State Schools Spectacular creative director Neil Gladwin said students have dedicated countless hours across many months involving about 2000 Zoom sessions since April in preparation for this show. “Spectaculars come in many shapes and sizes! By moving the production into the virtual and made-for-TV space, the spectacular ventures into a new arena,” Mr Gladwin said. “Effectively making 14 music videos all with different styles and themes, the songs capture the spirit of the cast who decided not to give up, but to give in to the delight of music, song and dance in the pandemic’s lockdown days. “This spectacular delights in the expression of hope, light and life seen in the eyes of all of its young participants.” Songs of resilience from Emilie Sande, Aloe Blac, Stevie Wonder, Goanna and John Farnham will carry the show. Featured artists include the Victorian State Schools Pasifika Choir, the VSS Mass Choir and the Victorian State Schools Choir.

Seven-month search for work finally over Elizabeth Phan has started work with the Brotherhood of St Laurence after a seven-month search that yielded only three interviews from 200 job applications. The Deer Park social work graduate recently captured Premier Daniel Andrews’ attention because of her determination to find a rewarding job during COVID-19’s challenge of job losses and increasing unemployment. Ms Phan found the community worker position through the state government’s Working for Victoria program – designed to match people with jobs that contribute to Victoria’s pandemic response. But the road to her new role was far from straight forward.

Born to a Vietnamese refugee family as Ngoc Bao Tran Phan, she discovered early in her job search that she needed to legally change her first name to Elizabeth to overcome the discrimination she said she experienced when looking for work. “One company I was interviewing with assumed I couldn’t speak English so they hired an interpreter without asking me if I needed one,” Ms Phan said. Ms Phan tried a few other careers, including nursing, pathology, and even make-up artistry before she found her true calling. She said that her “light bulb moment” came when she recognised she loved helping to empower people, especially women.

Ms Phan graduated from Victoria University in 2019 and said she was thankful that she could use her social work training and Vietnamese language skills to support some of Melbourne’s most vulnerable residents in her new role. Victoria University social work Associate Professor Annie Venville said Ms Phan’s capacity to lead, inspire and connect was nurtured and encouraged during her degree. “At VU, we believe in strong partnerships with our students and communities, and Elizabeth’s experience is a shining example of the commitment of our social work programs to students from all backgrounds,” she said. A Deer Park man has been charged with 14 offences after an alleged carjacking in Hoppers Crossing. A security guard who witnessed a crash on Heaths Road about 3.40am on November 7 was assaulted and his vehicle stolen. The stolen vehicle was later involved in another accident and was recovered in Deer Park about 10.30am. An 18-year-old man was arrested in Werribee on November 14. The Brimbank community is being urged to play “Santa Paws” this Christmas and help pets in need. Petbarn Caroline Springs and Petbarn Foundation recently announced the launch of their annual Tree of Hope Appeal to help save the lives of animals in need across Victoria. The foundation hopes to raise $1.2 million through the appeal. All funds raised will help more than 50 charities continue their important work caring for pets in need. With the Victorian Government’s plan to ease restrictions on track for a continued reopening across metropolitan Melbourne, Council is reopening some services and facilities to the community.

I will ensure that we continue to advocate to the Victorian Government to secure funding for important priorities including the electrification of the Melton line, building the Melton Hospital, and upgrading the Western Highway.

Call to move demolition industry By Goya Dmytryshchak The Brooklyn Residents Action Group is calling for three demolition companies to be moved far away from residential communities outside the metropolitan area. About 40 per cent of the state’s metals and more than one million tons of materials from the construction and demolition sector are reprocessed on the Brooklyn industrial estate. In a joint letter, BRAG executive members Bert Boere, Laurie Bell and Geoff Mitchelmore state the relocation of demolition companies is

necessary “to protect the health and amenity of our residential communities”. BRAG has written to Sustainability Victoria requesting the relocation of three Brooklyn operations, along with the Altona North landfill. The call comes in the wake of a report to the state government in September, which showed people in the inner west were being hospitalised at higher rates due to poor air quality. The report, Air Pollution in Melbourne’s Inner West – Taking direct action to reduce our community’s exposure, makes 26

recommendations with 65 suggested actions. “The recently released report commissioned by the state government … identifies the issues from which the inner west communities are suffering, especially in Brooklyn and Yarraville, particularly those which are impacted by the resource recovery industries in the Brooklyn industrial precinct,” the letter states. “The primary dust sources are the crushing operations and site stockpiles on each of the three demolition company sites in the Brooklyn industrial precinct. “Secondary dust sources are from the trucks

that operate out of these sites.” The report was researched by the Inner West Air Quality Community Reference Group, whose members represent Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay and Brimbank councils, community and environmental groups and the broader community. It heard from scientific, public health and industry experts to develop the report. Independent group chair Patsy Toop OAM, a personal injuries lawyer, said the relocation of demolition companies was one of the “priority recommendations” in the report.

Mr Kennedy said there has been a dramatic increase in shoppers throughout the centre since the easing of restrictions on October 28, with numbers even up compared with the same time last year. He encouraged shoppers who are able, to be flexible with timing to try and shop outside of peak times. “This helps us manage the social distancing aspects still in place,” he said. “The most important thing to remember is the safety and wellbeing of everyone in our centre is our highest priority.”

Local businesses hard hit by the lengthy coronavirus lockdown are welcoming the return of customers in time for the traditional busy Christmas period. Traders are reporting an increase in foot traffic in shopping strips and centres across Brimbnak, with increased movement since the five-kilometre and then 25-kilometre travel limits were dropped. CS Square centre manager Rod Kennedy said after nearly three months in lockdown, the centre was excited to welcome back retailers and customers. “Retailers were thrilled to finally open their doors and it was fantastic to see customers enjoying a coffee with friends, shopping for clothes and getting their post-lockdown makeovers,” he said. “Whilst customers have experienced queues, difficulty in booking appointment times and increased safety measures, we are incredibly

MY BRIMBANK Jason Whiter aspires to do his best for the community through programs that assist people living with disabilities and their carers. He spoke with Esther Lauaki about his passion projects.

How long have you lived in the area?

I eventually got my real estate license and set up my business in Keilor with my wife who quit her job to go on this journey with me.

Aside from owning a business in Keilor, what other hats do you wear in the community?

What are you passionate about?

I started the Brimbank Business Association with three other colleagues about four years ago. I do a lot of voluntary work with Vision Australia, Donate Life, Kidney Australia and Diabetes Australia. I also started blind tennis sessions in Keilor every Sunday and I recently ran for council. I am trying to start up a physically-challenged bodybuilding group. All this keeps me busy.

What’s your connection to Brimbank? I wanted to move to Keilor because my mum used to clean the house of the owner of the Keilor hotel. I’ve always wanted to live in the area.

Being highly active in the community, helping promote and support local businesses and raising awareness of, and initiating, disabilityinclusive programs within our community. Having low vision provides me a unique opportunity to really hear others’ perspectives of our community and see things through their eyes. It has taught me that most things are achievable given the right knowledge, resources, opportunities and commitment. Living with multiple disabilities, I have had to overcome challenges that I feel has made me a stronger and more resilient person, driven to achieve my ambitions of raising a family in our beautiful community, starting my own business and being an advocate for others.

You were recently nominated for The Aspire Awards for Melbourne which recognise the achievements of people who identify with a disability. What were you nominated for? I received a nomination for the business award and the community advocacy award. The

What do you love about Brimbank? The history behind it. I’m a Gold Rush fanatic and there’s a lot of history behind Brimbank Park. We are one of the most diverse areas in all of Victoria. What would you like to see improved? We do need a lot in the way that we are developing. More green spaces, we need to get on top of the Kealba tip fire, more mental health programs, support for people with disabilities and their carers, and changes in attitudes about physical health. I also think that we need more awareness about Indigenous culture and issues.

CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2020

A year to remember for Year 12 students Ray Pisani, Principal of Marian College, notes that this year has been challenging for all people around the world, especially so in a school setting. Students have found school life very different. Some have thrived through remote learning while others have found it to be a struggle in their learning and wellbeing. “For our Year 12s, their final year of secondary school has been disrupted and they haven’t had the opportunity to experience many of the important occasions that make the year special. “Brigidine Celebration Day, the annual athletics day, the school musical production, Year 12 Retreat, College assemblies, Leadership Program, Awards Night, graduation ceremony, the end-of-year 12 Celebration Day as well as the learning program have all required a re-imagining of how these events and activities could be realised. “It is important to acknowledge the resilience and creativity of the Senior Student Leadership Group who, with support of peers and staff, was able to ensure that the majority of the events could be held in some way. “Marian College was able to organise a Graduation Ceremony and Celebration Day. Graduation was streamed into family homes and the night incorporated a prayer liturgy, the presentation of the graduands with their certificates, and addresses by the Principal, and the College Lamp Bearers (school captains), Dahlia Cremona and Farah Besisou. “The Year 12’s Celebration Day had the students dressed up in costumes and sharing a prepared breakfast together. They also affirmed the value of the experience they have shared over the years at Marian by presenting to the entire student body a celebration video they produced.

“This day incorporates the announcement of the new Lamp Bearers and this year the “handing over of the Lamp of Learning” was live streamed into classrooms. The special moment was especially poignant this year - we all desperately need a sign of hope, light and promise for the future. “The final part of Celebration Day was the official farewell that would normally include

a guard of honour by all students and staff. We were still able to say our goodbyes but on a smaller scale, with the wonder of technology coming to support in transmitting the farewell to the rest of the school. “This year has been very hard for many and we are very aware that, especially for our Year 12s, it has been challenging. Through all of what has transpired in 2020, and the experiences

VCE students also completed their school assessment tasks under difficult circumstances. Self-motivation was key for students to stay on track, despite the distractions that came with remote learning. While all assessments have been completed, the VCE journey is not quite over for the year 12 students.

Here are a few tips to help you prepare so you can make the most of this fun event…

Communication is key Sign up to mailing lists now and you’ll receive all the info you need to know about the sales. Businesses often send out emails with early Black Friday discounts to members, so if you can access deals early it’s a good idea to get in first to ensure you’re able to get the items you want.

Spirited Swift spreads its wings By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring The Suzuki Swift might be in the featherweight division of the car market, but joining the upgraded flagship Sport, the Series II is far from light-on in modern features of the automobile. With up to $2000 in added features, including advanced safety technology, the recently released Series II of the Japanese hatchback represents very good value for money at $18,990, plus on-road costs, for the entry-level Swift GL Navigator manual. The GL Navigator manual and automatic, GL Navigator Plus, and GLX Turbo automatic continues the three-model line-up. Two engines are fitted, either a 1.2-litre four-cylinder in the ‘Navis’, or a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged unit in the GLX. Standard features across the board include blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, heated door mirrors and reverse parking sensors. New additions across all grades include digital speedometer and auto-up windows. Rear speakers, already standard in the GLX Turbo, have been added to the GL Navigator variants. Exterior design changes include a new front bumper and grille, and sporty alloy wheels.

Styling Exterior design changes include a newly engineered front bumper and grille, and new alloy wheels with low rolling resistance in keeping with its sporty nature. Rear door handles ‘hidden’ in the C-pillar again follow the modern design trend without taking anything away for the Swift character. The Swift Series II colour line-up remains the same, except for the two-tone grey which has been replaced with a single grey tone.

Interior A flat-bottom steering wheel, which is adjustable for tilt and reach in GLX only, gives the driver the ability to tailor the best position. The Swift has 242 litres of luggage space, 32 litres more than the previous model. The area has been optimised to carry a wide range of cargo, made easy to load by a high-lift tailgate.

Infotainment A 7-inch four-zone touch screen, situated at driver’s eye level on the central dashboard, enables easy access to audio and video playback and hands-free phone and navigation. Thanks to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the driver can also connect a smartphone.

Engines / transmissions The GLX test car was powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder putting out 82 kW of power and 160 Nm of torque. The GLX Turbo gets a six-speed torque-converter auto as its only transmission option. The GL Navigator and GL Navigator Plus are powered by a 66 kW / 120 Nm 1.2-litre four-cylinder motor. Both are available with automatic CVT transmission. A five-speed manual is also available in the base GL Navigator.

Safety More and more new vehicles are taking up advanced warning systems such as blind-spot monitoring which detects vehicles in or approaching the rear blind spots flanking the Swift with an illuminated LED icon in the relevant exterior mirror. Engineers looked to Europe for Swift nimbleness and agility from a the carried-over platform and suspension. Steering is sharp with a light and highly rigid suspension and is able to follow contours in the road but does pick up bumps and share them equally among all occupants. Large glassed areas all round make for a bright interior, wide views for passengers and the expansive rear window fills the whole of the interior rear-view mirror giving the driver, together with reversing camera, a safe indication of what’s behind. Petrol consumption on test averaged 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres in city and suburbs, and 3.8 litres per 100 kilometres at motorway speeds, which just about fits in with the car’s claimed 5.1 litres per 100 kilometres combined urban / highway figure. SPORT Sunshine United to make most of second chance Sunshine United is hoping to make the most of a second chance in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division. The Tigers finished seventh last season and were to be relegated, but earned a reprieve when the top division was expanded to 10 teams. Tigers president Mark Dalrymple said they were looking forward to making the most of a second shot in the top grade. “Had we been relegated it would have been really tough,” he said. “We would have taken the medicine, but we did a little bit better than the results indicated. “It was wise to move back to 10 teams, so it’s not so cut through. “We have a second chance and we’re looking forward to it. You still have to perform on the day.” Wanting to make an impact, the Tigers added a couple of key players to strengthen the side. The biggest move was signing Kaushal Lokuarachchi, who had been playing for rival senior division team Keilor.

Lokuarachchi, who is an assistant coach this season, averaged nearly 45 with the bat last season, making the second most runs in the division. He also chipped in with 21 wickets. Dalrymple said one of the main reasons they recruited the former Sri Lankan test player was to help them stay up in the top grade. Former captain-coach Neetan Chouhan returns after several seasons off. He will skipper the side. The third key addition is Michael Glowacki, who after a couple of injury-interrupted seasons, is fit and firing and ready for a big season. “They are three good recruits which is exciting … they’ve been around a while and played a lot of cricket,” Dalrymple said. “With our other core players we have a lot of experience.” Dalrymple said there had been plenty of players at training with people keen to get back into sport after lockdown.

They managed to get in a couple of practice matches before the season got underway, which was a good test of the COVID-19 protocols., he said. Dalrymple said they expected the one-day format this season to suit the side. They faced Aberfeldie in the opening round of the season on Saturday. The Tigers last week also kicked off their T20 campaign with a win against Sunshine YCW. The Tigers bowled YCW out for 53, with Lokuarachchi taking three wickets. It was easy work in the run chase, the Tigers finishing 1-54 off 10 overs. Dalrymple said the T20 competition remained a big focus this season. Roosters up to the test By Tara Murray Altona Roosters are keen to keep their strong form from recent years intact in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 1 season. After five finals series in six years across multiple divisions, the Roosters will be expected to be one of the teams to watch in an expanded division 1 competition this season. Captain-coach Ash Peters said he was backing the group to have another strong season. “Training has been really good,” he said. “We’ve had six or seven sessions in the lead up and a practice match. We’ve played finals the last three years and won the premiership from fourth in 2018-19. “We’ve got a good balance in recent years and I’m backing our boys in.” Despite making finals in their first season in division 1, Peters admits they were slightly disappointed after last season, when they were knocked out in the semi finals. Playing in division 1 west, the Roosters finished on top of the ladder. All four finalists had the same number of wins. Peters said had they made the grand final against Aberfeldie, they were confident they could have beaten them in the grand final. There will be changes to the squad for this season, with a couple of players stepping away. Jayodh Hennayake won’t play due to work commitments, while Mark Longhurst has left to play elsewhere with friends. Peters said those two departures would open spots in the batting order in the top side. He said there were a few blokes pushing for opportunities. Veeral Patel, who joined the club last season after walking in off the street looking for a club close to home, and Nathan Moon are two players that will be among those looking to fill those spots. Peters said they were looking forward to a couple of different challenges that have been thrown at them this season. The first being teams from division 1 west and north coming together in a merged competition. “We’ve played most of them the last few years in the lower divisions,” he said. “It’s a real good test having to play those teams again after a couple of years. It’s exciting.” The other challenge will be getting used to playing one-day games. Usually, there’s a mixture of one-day and two-day games, but due to COVID-19 all matches this season are one-day games. Peters said while it suits his game personally, it was 50-50 among his teammates whether it

suited their games. “Being one-dayers, you can’t be off the ball for five to seven overs,” he said. “The game changes dramatically if you’re not on your game for the whole overs.”

Centrals on the rise Melton Centrals has benefited from players looking to get out of the house and play some sport ahead of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 4 season. Like many clubs, the Centrals have had an influx of people returning to the sport after spending a large chunk of the year in lockdown. Centrals captain Adam Hulett said they were putting in an extra team this season due to an increase in numbers. “It’s good enough just to be out of the house, let alone playing cricket,” he said. “The whole club is keen to be out there and we’ve even got a fifth side, which is credit to the club. “It’s been a few years since we’ve had five teams.” The top two sides will play in the VTCA and the other three in Gisborne and District Cricket Association. Hulett said there would be some additions to each side, making every team stronger. Keeper-batsman Bradley Coulson, who played two games last season, has returned and will play the full season. Lahiru Kumara has come across from Ferntree Gully Footballers Cricket Club and looks to be a good cricketer. Hulett said a couple of returning players had brought some friends across too. “There’s a good spread across the grades,” he said. “We’re retained all the players from the top grade and we added a couple of players in and it will filter down through the grades. “It adds depth and it will help create a bit more competition for those in the top grade to retain their spots.” Centrals will be in division 4 for a second straight season. In their first season at that level, they finished seventh with four wins. Hulett said they would like to make finals, but there a plenty of unknowns in a competition which will be one-day matches only this season. “We don’t know too much about what other teams have with players,” he said. “For all we know they have recruited well and developed more kids. “Ideally the goal is to play finals.” Centrals started their season on Saturday against Williamstown Congs. Coaching duo appointed to Spotwood’s women’s side The successful coaching partnership of Ian Allan and Chris Grant will continue, with the pair appointed co-coaches of Spotswood’s women’s football side. Having coached the under-15 girls and then under-18 girls teams at the club the past five years, the pair has taken teams to grand finals in four of those years, with the fifth season, 2020, cancelled due to COVID-19. They take on a senior team that won the 2019 Western Region Football League women’s premiership under inaugural coach Theo Theodorou. Allan said they were keen to continue building on what they had been doing with the youth girls. “Last year we had four or five girls go up into the women’s team, this year it’s close to 20 players coming up,” Allan said. “We want to make that transition easier and continue building what is best for those girls.

We want to make sure they feel wanted and comfortable with everything. “There’s some good development ahead of the group.” Allan said having co-coaches was unique, but they worked really well together. He said they were like yin and yang when it comes to coaching. “We think we have done pretty well,” he said. “The girls enjoy playing and we just love it and have the passion for it and seeing the girls improve. “We’re so excited to go on for the next challenge.” While Allan’s daughter is in the Spotswood women’s team, Grant has continued on at the club even though his daughter Isabella is no longer there. Isabella was drafted by the Western Bulldogs in 2019 under the father-daughter rule. Grant played 341 games for the Bulldogs and is the club’s football department director.

Allan said Grant wanted to continue to share his passion for football. “Chris has a passion for girls’ footy. He has built strong relationships at the club and girls love having him around. “It’s a bonus to have someone of that level. “The girls are really excited Chris and myself are coming on board, along with the guys who support us.” Allan said they would start pre-season next year when they were allowed. He said despite the success of the girls’ and women’s sides at the club, their motto hasn’t changed. “We’ve played in four grand finals in a row, but that wasn’t the aim. “For us, it’s that every girl takes the opportunity to play a role in the team. By Tara Murray Western Jets draft hopeful Eddie Ford didn’t sit on his hands this year while there was no football. Keen to put his best foot forward and keep his name in front of recruiters, the utility looked at other ways to improve his game. It included contacting AFL clubs to help him out. “I asked Fremantle for some vision of Nat Fyfe and a couple of other clubs for vision of their players to just show their inside work, how they work in contested footy in the midfield and running patterns as well,” he said. “I try and base my game on the best players to get the best out of it. Nat Fyfe is obviously a cracking player with two Brownlows under his belt. “I got a bit of vision of him, which was good to see how he plays the game.” Ford’s work wasn’t just restricted to studying visio. He also set up a gym at his dad’s place to help him keep fit. He said he had managed to keep himself in pretty good shape. “I stayed up-to-date with running and fitness,” he said. “It was pretty average, hard not playing something you love doing, especially through the winter months and early spring months – it’s what you do. I’ve been doing it for nine, 10 years. “I guess I had the combine in mind to stay fit and I’m a pretty active bloke. I was running four to five times a week and the only thing I missed out on was the game awareness sort of stuff.” Ford said that he tested pretty well at the combine, including having the equal highest vertical jump on the board that day. Those results and his performances last season have seen the Yarraville-Seddon Eagles player speak to about 14 clubs. “Hopefully it’s a good indication of what is to come and they’ve all been pretty good, I think they like me,” he said. “I ended my season pretty well last year and played the all-star game and had a good game according to some people. “I would have liked to have had a more consistent season as a bottom ager and I think the two pre-seasons games for this season showed glimpses. “If I was to get drafted, I would take the opportunity on-board and make the most of it.” Ford said one of his strengths going into the draft is his flexibility and ability to play multiple positions. While he’s played a lot down forward in recent years, he’s more than capable of having an impact in the midfield. He said he’s happy to play in any position to achieve his dream of being an AFL player. “I’ve been wanting to play more midfield lately as I didn’t get the biggest crack at it last

year, unfortunately,” he said. “I grew up playing a lot of my footy in the midfield, forward and that was my role. I guess the thing I wanted to show clubs is my versatility and being able to play any position. “Growing up I played back, midfield and

forward. There was a grand final once when I was in under-15s and there was a really strong wind, I would swap between forward and back to be around the footy.” “I enjoy playing midfield and enjoy kicking a goal as well.”

Woodend-Hesket netballers have returned to the court with a spring in their step after a season of without netball. Riddell District Netball League was cancelled due to COVID-19, leaving netballers on the sidelines for much of 2020. However with restrictions easing, the Hawks are training in preparation for next season, under Carly Arkinstall. Arkinstall was appointed the Hawks head coach for the 2020 season before being reappointed for next year. Arkinstall is looking forward to having a full pre-season with the group. “We had 12 girls at the first session and there were four new faces, which was really great to start with,” she said. “It was great to see them and hopefully we’ll have a few more at training over the coming weeks. “Coming in late for this year, in terms of trials and preparation, wasn’t ideal. “It’s now a really great chance to get to know them and understand where the gaps are and be productive in sourcing other players.” Arkinstall said a number of players who were due to play in 2020 are set to return. A few of the girls who had been playing under-19s and A-grade, led by Sarah Duff, would now only play A-grade which should benefit the team. Arkinstall said they had a few things in the pipeline in terms of possible new players. “Things are moving faster than we thought and there’s some exciting leads with respect to strong players coming out of the Victorian Netball League and interstate leagues. Arkinstall said they were still looking for other players who might be interested in joining the club and invited prospective players to join a training session. The Hawks coaching panel remains the same with Anne-Louise Lindner coaching the C-grade side and Kellie Duff coaching the under-19s. Arkinstall said they were set to have a strong under-19 team which is hoping to claim its first premiership. Rupertswood, which has won every under-19 premiership previously, is no longer in the competition, opening the door for the Hawks.
