Hospital under pressure By Alesha Capone Werribee Mercy Hospital does not have the capacity or infrastructure to manage the rapidly increasing demand for its services, according to a top official. Mercy Health Group chief executive Stephen Cornelissen has called for the hospital to be redeveloped to expand its capacity and the services it can offer. It comes as latest Victorian Agency for Health Information (VAHI) data revealed the median waiting time for patients at Werribee Mercy Hospital’s emergency department (ED) was 31 minutes between July and September

this year – the longest wait time in the state. Ninety per cent of patients at Werribee Mercy were seen by a nurse or doctor within 158 minutes, compared to 176 minutes a year earlier. Adjunct Professor Cornelissen said the Werribee Mercy “faces significant challenges that contribute to recording ED waiting times that are longer than any other Victorian public hospital”. “Werribee Mercy Hospital does not have the capacity nor the infrastructure to manage the rapidly increasing demand for our hospital’s services,” he said. “We currently have 15 cubicles in our ED, many of which are frequently

occupied by patients waiting for mental health inpatient placement or community transfer. “We are also treating increasingly more complex health issues at our hospital as a result of having an Intensive Care Unit.” Adjunct Professor Cornelissen said ED presentations are projected to increase by more than 107 per cent by 2026 as a result of Wyndham’s population growth. Adjunct Professor Cornelissen said Werribee Mercy was grateful the state government had constructed the Catherine McAuley Building, with an eight-bed Intensive Care Unit and additional surgical capacity, two years ago. “However, what our hospital and, most

importantly, the people of Melbourne’s west needs, is to move forward with additional redevelopment through the expansion of both the physical capacity of Werribee Mercy Hospital, and the services that it provides.” Adjunct Professor Cornelissen said that new infection control safety measures, plus the furloughing of hospital staff due to coronavirus infection or close contact with the virus, had contributed to ED waiting times. He said the “small improvement” to Werribee Mercy’s ED waiting times could be attributed to a number of service improvements implemented and a committed and high-performing workforce.

Distribution centre jobs boost By Alesha Capone A $135 million supermarket distribution centre in Truganina will provide more than 400 jobs. The 38,000 square metre Melbourne Fresh Distribution Centre (MFDC) in Foundation Road was unveiled by the Woolworths Group’s supply chain arm, Primary Connect, earlier this month. Woolworths supply chain general manager for southern region, Justin Dowling, said they were in the process of hiring for roles including warehouse staff and forklift operators. “Each week we have 20 or 30 new people starting, which will likely continue until

February next year,” Mr Dowling said. “Being a local to Point Cook, it’s just good to be able to open up in the area and provide jobs to locals.” Fruit, vegetables, meat and chilled products from the MFDC will be delivered to 230 Victorian supermarkets. The centre will process about 1.5 million cartons of groceries per week from more than 500 fresh food suppliers. Moving the MFDC from Mulgrave to Truganina will take an estimated 3600 truck movements off Melbourne’s roads each year. The MFDC is also hoping to receive a five star green rating from the Green Building Council of Australia, with a solar panel system on the roof, charge points for electric trucks and fuel

savings of more than 400,000 litres each year. Mr Dowling said the Truganina facility featured banana and avocado ripening technology, which gives bananas a longer shelf-life and more even colouring. Tarneit resident Renee Watene started working at the MFDC in August. Ms Watene, a workplace coach, was previously based at Woolworths’ Mulgrave facility. She said it was “terrific” to now be employed at the Truganina MFDC, which has cut her work commute from 45-60 minutes to just 15 minutes. “I love the job, the people here are really good to work with,” she said.

Testing drive under way Residents with even the mildest COVID-19 symptoms are being encouraged to get tested as part of a new testing drive in Wyndham and Hume. The Department of Health and Human Services launched the testing drive on Sunday, with five pop-up testing sites set up across the two municipalities. The testing sites in Wyndham are at the Jamieson Way Community Centre in Point Cook, Tarneit Community & Learning Centre and Werribee South Foreshore Reserve. Hours of operation will vary, with the Point Cook site’s last day of operation to be Saturday, November 21 and the other two sites to finish up on Sunday, November 22. Wyndham and Hume have been among the municipalities hardest hit by the virus, with Wyndham recording a total of 2265 cases and Hume 1663 cases since March. The DHHS said that more pop-up testing sites would be set up in other local government areas in the coming weeks, as well as at summer hotspots. Between November 2 and November 15, 8588 COVID-19 tests were carried out in Wyndham, with all tests returning a negative result. On Monday, Victoria recorded its 17th straight day of no new cases or deaths from the virus. As of Monday, there were three active virus cases in Victoria – two in the Greater Dandenong area and one in the Casey area.

Year 12 student Chelsea has sewn 100 reusable masks which have been donated to homeless people. Chelsea, who attends Thomas Carr College in Tarneit, made the masks as part of a community service project she completed for her personal development skills & work-related skills subject. Chelsea donated the masks to Vinnies Victoria to give to people sleeping rough. The 18-year-old said she initially started making masks for her friends and family, then decided to create masks for the school project. “I chose to make masks for the homeless because they don’t have access to them or the means to buy them,” she said. “To make 100 masks was my goal, because we had to set goals for the project as to how we would plan it out.” Chelsea said she spent about a fortnight cutting out fabric, sewing and packaging the masks, which she made in six different sizes. “I did enjoy making them and I’ve done a lot of charity work at school, it’s just me and what I like to do,” Chelsea said. “I’m happy to be able to help homeless people out as well. “Also the teachers here are really, really great and supportive.” Chelsea said she has taken part in the annual Vinnies Sleepout four times. She said the fundraising event usually involved Thomas Carr students sleeping in the school gym, but this year they participated from home, due to the pandemic. She has also participated in bake sales for St Vinnies and the RSPCA, plus the Canteen Foundation’s bandana campaign.

Art tells local story Thomas Carr College students have collaborated with Aboriginal artist Nathan Patterson to create artwork celebrating Wyndham’s Indigenous culture. Patterson, whose art uses both traditional and modern techniques, is known for large-scale murals and his work featuring on four AFL Indigenous guernseys. He visited the school during NAIDOC Week, where he spoke to students and oversaw a year 10 art collective piece. The artwork includes local elements which connect the community such as Werribee River, the You Yangs, a camp fire, a wedge-tailed eagle, gum leaves and wattle flowers. “Our collaborative artwork is full of symbolism taken from the Wyndham Shire

story,” Patterson said. “[I was] so honoured to share my personal art journey as well as having the opportunity to educate youth about Aboriginal art, culture and storytelling.” College art teacher Mary Udovicic said it was great to see the students being mentored by Patterson. “What a delight it was to see our year 10 drawing and painting students … completely immersed in an artist workshop where they explored our rich Aboriginal culture,” she said. Principal, Craig Holmes said Thomas Carr is in the process of developing a Reconciliation Action Plan “and is proud to have celebrated NAIDOC week with our students of Indigenous heritage”.

Jetstar’s first flight from Avalon in almost nine months will take off in time for Christmas, with services between the airport and Sydney set to resume on December 18. The twice-daily return service follows the New South Wales government’s announcement that its borders will open to Victoria. This will be the first time Jetstar has operated between the two destinations since March 31. Jetstar will continue to monitor the easing of restrictions between Victoria and other states and will add more flights from Avalon where there is demand.

The Lumen Christi School in Point Cook will receive $2 million from the state government’s Non-Government Schools Capital Fund. Altona MP Jill Hennessy announced the funding last week. Ms Hennessy said the $2 million would help Lumen Christi to construct a new administration staff room and senior hub. The project will feature interconnected learning spaces and refurbished admin areas downstairs. This will include work areas, meeting rooms, storage, a kitchenette, a sickbay, reception, school entry and a waiting area as well as a new shared relief, work and training area. “This project will help Point Cook’s Lumen Christi School and give local students and staff the best possible facilities,” Ms Hennessy said. “This investment is vital to Victoria’s economic recovery and creating jobs in the ‘Education State’.” More than 50 schools across Victoira will receive fast-tracked funding for upgrades. The schools will be able to start their projects within the next six months. The 56 projects will create close to 800 jobs during construction. Education Minister James Merlino said that fast-tracking funding for educational projects would help to drive Victoria’s economic recovery from COVID-19. “Every child – no matter where they live or go to school – deserves the best facilities,” he said.

The Alliance for Gambling Reform has expressed concern that poker machines are being switched back on in Victoria, as the state eases out of lockdown. The alliance has estimated that the pandemic lockdowns between March 16 and November 8 prevented more than $69.88 million being spent on Wyndham’s poker machines. Between July 2019 and March 15 this year, the average daily loss on Wyndham’s electronic gaming machines was $293,626. The alliance’s chief advocate, the Reverend Tim Costello said that Victorians “saved more than $1.8 billion from being lost to poker machines while in lockdown”. “These savings have been nothing short of extraordinary in some council areas, such as Brimbank where more than $100 million has been saved from being lost on poker machines,” he said. “That’s money that will have circulated in their local economies at a time when it has been most needed. “But it’s not just the financial impacts on local economies that have been so remarkable; gambling harms people and families on a daily basis.” Reverend Costello commended the state government for implementing a staged reopening of poker machines following the last lockdown, but said more needed to be done. “We’re hopeful the Victorian government will learn from this experience and recognise how much it has helped people to have poker machines off. “We’d like to see the government commit to permanently reduce operating hours (for poker machines) to 10am to midnight.” Contact Gambler’s Help on 1800 858 858 or see gamblershelp.com.au for assistance.

Safety poster a stand out Point Cook youngster Ashlea has been selected as the winner of a statewide creative competition which received hundreds of entries. Earlier this year, Transdev Melbourne launched a competition seeking artwork for a poster promoting safe behaviours when travelling on buses. The competition was open to Victorian students in years 5 to 8. Transdev last week announced Ashlea, 10, as winner of the competition’s years 5-6 category. Ashlea, a grade 5 pupil at Alamanda College, said she featured Australian animals in her poster and researched the topic before commencing her design work. “I picked the koala because it loves to hold on to tree branches tightly and that is exactly what we want to remind people to do when they are

standing onboard a moving bus – hold tight,” she said. “I also enjoyed adding in bits of humour into the messages of the poster so that anyone who looks at it would have a little chuckle. “Posters shouldn’t be boring.” Ashlea said she felt “really surprised” and “very happy” to win the competition. She received a Nintendo Switch, a certificate, Transdev puzzles and souvenirs as first prize. “I am excited to hear that Transdev will be using my poster design for their communications with schools, newsletters and future educational tours,” Ashlea said “I hope I can create more of such work in the future.” Alesha Capone

Back in business By Alesha Capone Wyndham businesses have welcomed the support from local residents as Melbourne emerges from pandemic lockdown. The Park Werribee owner Nick Christou said the hotel received more than 500 calls in just two days last week after Premier Daniel Andrews announced that eateries could host sit-down meals again. Committee for Wyndham chief executive Barbara McLure said it was terrific to see people shopping and eating in Watton Street, Werribee last Thursday. “I think there is a sense that people have an understanding that local businesses did it really hard and it’s very important to support local businesses now,” she said. Renay Ahmed, from the Wyndham Cache café and deli and LT’s Egg Farm in Werribee South, said the café was encouraging customers to order grazing boxes and drinks to enjoy on the lawn. “The response has been phenomenal. As soon as the Premier’s announcement happened, the phones were ringing off the hook,” Ms Ahemd said. Pacific Werribee centre manager Patricia Gardiner said the shopping centre was pleased to welcome back traders which were closed during the pandemic. “The centre community is certainly beaming with positivity,” Ms Gardiner said. State manager for Cedar Woods, Lloyd Collins said it was encouraging to see the Williams Landing town centre reopen. He said Cedar Woods was working with tenants and council to expand the external dining area to help businesses get back on track. Wyndham council last week announced measures to help eateries extend their dining areas, by creating an additional 1938 square metres of outdoor dining space across the municipality. Wyndham city design and liveability director Ludo Campbell-Reid said the council was also planning the West End Experience, an outdoor dining area in Watton Street between Bridge Hotel and Wedge Street Piazza, as a series of one-day activations. In addition, three “parklets” will be installed in Hoppers Junction and outdoor dining precincts created in the Point Cook Town Centre and Soho Village.

Teenage boxing champion Marissa Williamson has been awarded a scholarship by the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame. The scholarship gives the 18-year-old $10,000 to put towards boxing costs, access to wellbeing programs and staff, and she will be mentored by Olympic gold medallist and professional beach volleyballer Kerri Pottharst. Williamson grew up in Wyndham and took up boxing when she was 16. She is the 64kg Victorian Boxing Champion, 64kg Australian Boxing Champion and is on the National Futures Team which aims to train athletes for the 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2024 Olympics. Williamson said the scholarship has been the highlight of a “tough year”. She left foster care earlier this year and was temporarily homeless before finding her own apartment. And she was all set to represent Australia at the World Youth Games in Poland last month, before it was postponed until next year due to COVID-19. Williamson said she usually trains six days a week. For the past few months she has been training at Crew Fitness and Performance in Braybrook, which was co-founded by five-time Australian boxing champion Jason Mallia. “What I have enjoyed [about boxing] is just the opportunity to travel and learn life skills, which I didn’t have the chance to do when I was younger,” she said. PFAS ‘migrated’ from RAAF base By Goya Dmytryshchak The Department of Defence has confirmed off-site contamination from chemicals found in firefighting foams used on the RAAF Base Williams at Laverton, including in groundwater, world-listed Cheetham Wetlands and waterways discharging into Port Phillip Bay. It will now investigate the risk to residents of Williams Landing and nearby from eating home-grown fruit, vegetables, and chicken eggs. It will also look at the risk from eating fish and eels caught at Skeleton Creek and Sanctuary Lakes. A federal Department of Health fact sheet

states there is “no conclusive evidence” that per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) cause cancer although some studies had shown a possible link. Luke McLeod, assistant secretary of the department’s PFAS Investigation and Management Program said Defence was not a health authority and relied on evidence that exposure to PFAS be minimised as “important health effects for individuals cannot be ruled out based on the current evidence“. He said a survey of how the community near the Laverton base used or had used bore and surface water “did not identify any users of groundwater for drinking water purposes and

the general groundwater quality is not suitable for drinking water or irrigating home-grown produce, due to high levels of salinity”. “The base and surrounding properties are serviced by mains water supplied by City West Water,” he said. “This is important, as the primary route of exposure to PFAS in humans occurs through drinking-impacted water or through consumption of food that has been exposed to impacted water or soil.” Defence started using foams containing PFAS chemicals in the 1970s for fighting high-intensity liquid fuel fires. The RED CENTRE exhibition will return to Werribee this month. The annual outdoor gallery-style exhibition, featuring six temporary works of art, is part of Wyndham council’s public art program. Now in its sixth year, the event will feature photography, street art, illustration and light-based installations by local and Victorian artists. In a nod to the upcoming Christmas season, each artist has been asked to reference the colour red in their work. Located in the west end of Watton Street, RED CENTRE will run from November 27 until January 18 next year. Internationally-renowned street artist Ash Keating will return to create a new temporary work near the Wyndham Cultural Centre. Photographs taken by Atong Atem also will feature in the program, while local artist Rukz One, aka Paul Zahra, has collaborated with public artist, photographer and illustrator Carla Gottgens to bring pandemic secrets and isolation habits to life in a large-scale work along Wedge Street. The Wedge Street Piazza will be festively lit and include work by artists Buff Diss and Jessica Jane. The federal government has appointed Bolton Clarke to deliver in-home personal care, domestic assistance and flexible respite services in Wyndham from January 1 next year. Bolton Clarke is one of the largest Australian-owned not-for-profit healthcare and aged care service providers. Wyndham’s director of city life, Allison Kenwood, said the council was working closely with both the federal government and Bolton Clarke to ensure a smooth transition for the 1000 residents currently receiving in-home care through council. “These changes are part of the federal government’s aged care reforms and aim to give older people and their families the ability to ‘shop around’ for services, in turn giving them greater choice and control over who provides in-home care,” Ms Kenwood said. She said the council would continue to provide a variety of other aged care services, including delivered meals, social support, assessments, home modifications and maintenance, and community transport. Bolton Clarke’s executive general manager of at home support, Deidre McGill, said the organisation was thrilled to be named the preferred service provider for Wyndham. “We look forward to expanding our existing Commonwealth Home Support Program services across Melbourne to support more clients in the Wyndham region with home care and assistance that will help them stay independent and well,” Ms McGill said. Referee lands award nomination Tarneit’s Tony Warland has been named one of two finalists in the Official of the Year category at the annual Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation Awards. The VDSR awards will be held as a virtual event on December 3. Mr Warland was also one of three finalists in the VDSR award last year. Height limit plan for RAAF base By Alesha Capone The Department of Defence is proposing to apply height regulations to buildings constructed within 15 kilometres of the Point Cook RAAF base. The DOD is seeking public feedback on a proposal for the “Defence Aviation Area” which aims to control activities which might be dangerous to aviation activities. The regulations, if adopted, would apply to buildings, communication towers, trees and gas plumes emanating from an exhaust stack, plus temporary structures such as cranes. Extensions to existing buildings or

structures exceeding the height limits would also be required. Although developers would not be prevented from building above a certain height stipulated in the regulations, they would be required to seek approval from the DOD if planning to do so. Breaching the regulations could result in a fine of up to $4400. The proposal outlines five areas in which buildings above a certain height would require permission, including parts of Point Cook Homestead Road, Main Drive and Point Cook Road, where all new structures would have to gain approval from the DOD.

Other areas near the RAAF base would require permission for buildings to be constructed at 7.5 metres or higher, 15 metres or higher, 45 metres or higher and 90 metres or higher. The 7.5 metre zone includes sections of Point Cook Homestead Road, Rifle Range Road, Luthine Circuit, Esperance Plane and Vivianne Avenue. The 15 metre zone is bordered by, or located near, parts of Crawfords Road, Duncans Road, O’Connors Road, Aviation Road, Hoppers Lane, Boardwalk Boulevard, Dunnings Road, Point Cook Road and Sanctuary Lakes North Boulevard.

The other two zones cover parts of Point Cook, Seabrook, Laverton, Laverton North, Williams Landing, Truganina and Ravenhall. The DOD has asked for public feedback on the proposed Defence Aviation Area, before it is sent to the Minister for Defence for approval. Snap up a piece of history A popular Werribee South eatery is selling its collection of historic photos to raise funds for a good cause. Apart from food, the Wyndham Cache café and deli is known for the images decorating its walls, which show scenes from Werribee and Werribee South’s past, including its agricultural heritage. The cafe and deli is located next to LT’s Egg Farm, a third-generation family business run by sisters Renay Ahmed and Danyel Cucinotta. The siblings said that Wyndham Cache was renovated during the first pandemic lockdown. As a result the historic photos were taken down. The sisters have since decided to sell the photos to raise funds for the Rotary Club of Werribee, of which their father Brian is past president. All proceeds raised through the photo sales will be donated to the Rotary Club, to go towards local community projects. “Although the majority of photos have been taken down, the local history is embedded in our walls,” Ms Ahmed said. “The history remains in our core with our family and our extended family of customers.” The sisters said that of about 200 images, they have sold about a quarter – including some to the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of people depicted in the pictures. Wyndham council has started construction of a new tennis court at Oaktree Avenue Park in Wyndham Vale as part of a $484,000 upgrade. The tennis court, which is expected to be open to the public by the end of the year, is the first stage of the park’s redevelopment. Designs for an upgraded playground featuring new equipment are being finalised. The project will also include redeveloped picnic areas with barbecues, upgraded pathways, furniture and landscaping, and is expected to be complete in late 2021. Bail for murder accused Five teenagers charged with murdering 15-year-old Solomone Taufeulungaki have been granted bail and told they must follow strict conditions – including a curfew and a social media ban – in the two years before their trial. Solomone, 15, was stabbed to death on June 16 outside the Brimbank Shopping Centre in Deer Park. Police have charged a total of 11 people with murder over his death, including nine boys, aged 13 to 17, and two men, aged 20 and 23. Supreme Court Justice Paul Coghlan this month granted bail to five of the boys – two aged 13, one aged 14 and two 15-year-olds. Justice Coghlan said he was leaning towards granting bail to the five boys because of their young age, the expected delay before their trial and their previous good compliance with bail. Roaming cats a risk to wildlife The discovery of a dying duckling in Manor Lakes has prompted calls for cat owners to keep their pets indoors. The duckling, from a protected native species, was found near a local waterway with a hole in its chest and bites to its body –injuries likely inflected by a cat. The Werribee River Association said that despite the efforts of two residents, the tiny bird “spent the last few minutes of its life in agony”.

The WRA has asked Wyndham’s cat owners to take more responsibility for their pets and develop a “cat plan” this summer. This includes preventing cats from roaming away from home by keeping them indoors or having a secure outdoor enclosure, such as a cat run. According to the RSPCA, kittens generally adapt well to an indoor lifestyle if they have been contained from an early age.

It is recommended that if you have a cat who roams, that you try to introduce them to being contained gradually – initially keeping them inside at night, then gradually increasing the time they are contained during the day The WRA said this would help to prevent the deaths of native animals, but would also help keep cats safe from cars, from being stolen and from being involved in fights with other felines. A 2019 study found that cats kill two billion

native animals in Australia every year – including birds, reptiles and small mammals. Researchers also found that the average pet cat kills 186 animals a year. “A myriad of other animals call Melbourne home, including the critically endangered orange-bellied parrot, which uses Werribee as a key habitat during their migration,” the WRA statement said. Dance puts spotlight on mental health

Spectacular students More than 2000 students were due to perform in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular at John Cain Arena in September, but the coronavirus put a halt to plans. Instead, students have been rehearsing online via Zoom since April. More than 500 Zoom sessions have recorded all the principal singers and dancers, with the footage to be edited into a TV special which will be broadcast by the Seven Network later this year. Year 10 student Lara Crotty from Suzanne Cory High School and year 8 student Grace Ulsa from Tarneit College, are both in the Victorian State Schools Choir. Neema Kashindi, who is in year 10 at Tarneit Senior College, was selected to be a principal vocalist in this year’s Spectacular after several rounds of auditions. Neema, 15, said she has previously sung in the Spectacular’s mass choir four times. She said she enjoyed the diversity among the event’s performers, who are all from different schools and backgrounds. “We’re all there for the same reason, we all love performing and entertaining people,” she said. Neema she said had always loved music and would consider pursuing a singing career, but she also enjoyed legal studies at school. Neema encouraged other students to try out for next year’s State Schools Spectacular, with virtual auditions now open. “It would be awesome to see a lot of new people come and join the family,” she said. An organisation which provides youth counselling and support has been presented with a donation of $5000, which was raised at last year’s Avalon Dance Stars on the Floor. Event organiser Heather Marcus presented a cheque to headspace Werribee last week. The Avalon Dance Stars on the Floor committee and Mental Health Foundation Australia (MHFA) joined together for the show, which eight prominent Wyndham residents participated in. The “dance stars” all raised funds for youth mental health support and suicide prevention in Wyndham, in addition to performing at the gala event. They were trained by Dance Worx in Essendon, with the assistance of balloon dancing teachers Kym and Shane Hocking. Ms Marcus, who is also a multicultural ambassador for the MHFA, said the dance event raised almost $41,000. Apart from headspace Werribee, the funds raised have also been donated to programs run by mental health groups in Wyndham, at Iramoo Community Centre and by the Catholic Church. “If we could help save a couple of young lives, it’s all worth it,” Ms Marcus said. Young swimmers keen to jump right in As pandemic restrictions ease in metro Victoria, children are diving back into swimming lessons. JUMP! Swim School, which operates at Hoppers Crossing and Point Cook, re-opened on Monday. The swim schools provide lessons to youngsters aged from three years, with bookings essential. JUMP! and other swim schools and municipal pools were forced to close on March 23 due to a strict pandemic lockdown. likely and immensely concerning.” Mr Collins said that as warmer weather approaches, families might start spending more time in and around water. “This will mean time spent around pools, rivers, beaches and other bodies of water where the chances of accidents happening are heightened,” he said. Mr Collins said it was important for parents to keep an eye on their children around water and to talk to them about water safety. But, how do you know which group and which personal trainer will be the best fit for you? Happy customers a key ingredient As a local resident, Charlene Fang noticed that her community lacked a Chinese restaurant so she took the bull by the horns and launched Wok Wok BBQ & Chinese in Williams Landing Town Centre three years ago.

Zipping into the future Ian Trewin has got the twinkle back in his eye and now that restrictions have lifted is looking forward to eating seafood in a restaurant with his wife Barbara and zipping around the shops.

nd it’s thanks to the mobility scooter organised for Ian through his home care package with not-for-profit aged care provider Uniting AgeWell. The Werribee South 84-year-old has had three five-hour kidney dialysis sessions a week for the past 10 years, and getting to and from hospital was proving increasingly difficult. Over the years, his wife Barbara, 81, dropped him off and later fetched him – which entailed four trips a day – but things grew more difficult as his mobility decreased and her exhaustion increased. The retired mechanic and bus driver tried ambulance transfers but this often entailed long waits. “The whole thing got me down so much I was about to give dialysis away,” Ian says. He used his home care package to buy the scooter, and hasn’t looked back. Now he orders a maxi taxi, roars into the back on his mobility scooter and heads off to the hospital, doing the same for his trip home. Ian also used his home care package to buy an electric bed, has a leg massage once a week and knows he only has to pick up the phone to get extra help. “It’s great,” Barbara says. “We love our home and we’re so glad we can carry on living here.” Ian is one of thousands of clients across Victoria and Tasmania receiving home care services through Uniting AgeWell – many of whom are in Melbourne’s west and north. I think it’s a good thing that the players understand each other.” During the off-season, United was boosted by the signing of young attacker Lachie Wales, who joined from last season’s runners-up, Melbourne City. Mark also confirms that the club is working on strengthening its squad even

Reconnecting with the community Iramoo Community Centre, providing a range of community programs and activities to advance social inclusion, vibrancy and resilience of Wyndham residents, stepped up during COVID-19 lockdowns by providing an online platform.

entre manager Renae Paul says that to reduce the feelings of loneliness and isolation in the community, they had to adapt quickly. “We offered weekly Zoom sessions to provide an interactive experience, which our community was needing,” Renae says. “These sessions ranged from gardening, cooking, yoga, arts, crafts and tai chi classes. “We also set up a YouTube account where we could post videos of some of our regular programs, share tips and provide a variety of workshops. We currently have more than 70 videos! “Collectively, we had to boost mental health and wellbeing. Our community was craving interaction and positivity, when there was so much negativity going around. “As manager, I thank my team, volunteers and our community for staying connected.” Iramoo is now opening to the community, as restrictions ease. COVID-19 restrictions will be in place to ensure social distancing, and hygiene measures are being met. Renae says it’s great to see the community returning to the centre, with programs and services restarting. “The centre is focusing on offering a variety of free or low-cost workshops to encourage the community to feel safe and confident to reconnect. “The aim of these workshops is to provide a safe environment to improve the mental health and wellbeing of all. will be small groups, keeping in line with the restrictions.” Iramoo has a variety of support groups, while online programs will also continue during this time for those not quite ready to leave home. “Community centres have always played

a vital role in bringing together communities and reducing isolation – a place for people to feel safe and connected. “It was challenging having to close our doors to the public, knowing it goes against everything we do. We’re very happy to be reconnecting with our community.”

Cute Kia Picanto ideal urban ride By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring Kia Picanto is the smallest car in the high-flying Korean brand’s range. It has been on sale here since 2016 and currently, with more than 80 per cent of total sales, it dominates the – admittedly very small – micro car market segment. Small city cars have historically been poor sellers in Australia which is a shame as these

small and affordable economy cars are really all that many urban dwellers need. The primary buyer profile for Picanto will be late-teen / early 20s females, with a smattering of baby boomers taking up the slack. Those at the young end of the age scale typically have a three-point check list – cute styling, affordability and the latest in infotainment technology. The previous model

ticked the first two boxes but missed out on the third, a problem which has now been fixed with this latest upgrade. New Picanto is currently offered in two variants, S and GT-Line both powered by a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine and either manual or automatic transmission. A third model the GT is expected to be added towards the end of 2020. We don’t have specific

details at this stage but the outgoing GT was a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol.

Styling Styling of Picanto (love that name, it sounds like it should mean something in Italian … but doesn’t) is fresh and contemporary. To our eyes the GT-Line variant that’s the subject of this test is just about the cutest car on Australian

Engine / transmission The 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine in the Picanto S and GT-Line generates 62 kilowatts of power and 122 Newton metres of torque at 4000 rpm. Both models come with the choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions.

Sharp and agile in its urban natural habitat the little Kia had no trouble keeping pace with traffic over the undulating terrain of the M1 Pacific Motorway to the north of Sydney. Only in steeper hills in the semi-rural segment of our test route did it struggle. SPORT Chancellor excited by Jets opportunity New Western Jets coach Robbie Chancellor is looking forward to the opportunity ahead of him with the NAB League club. Having been in the AFL coaching system for a number of years, most recently at St Kilda for nine years, Chancellor decided to look for a new role with AFL clubs needing to restructure due to cuts. Chancellor said the pathway system was an exciting one to be a part of. He will coach both the boys and girls under-19 teams in a full-time role. “I have been working in the AFL for quite a while and to be part of the pathways with both girls and boys is an exciting opportunity,” he said. “I knew I was in a little bit of trouble with the cap squeeze. I was proactive and being a young coach, the time was right to look for something else. “The knock on me was I had experience as an assistant coach at AFL level, but I hadn’t

coached my own team … now I get to coach my own team twice.” Chancellor said he had a little bit of experience with the pathway system and the western suburbs through his role at St Kilda. He said the western suburbs potentially had a lot of untapped talent. “That’s the exciting part,” he said. “It’s an exciting area and very multicultural,” he said. “There are some really good players in the area and sport is a big part of the community out there.” Chancellor said his focus would be to make sure the two programs were successful. “The St Kilda assistant coaches in the men’s did rotate through and do some trainings with the AFLW team the last couple of years, so I’ve done bits and pieces. “It’s a great opportunity to get to know the difference between coaching boys and girls. “I want to set the club up as the Western Jets

Football Club and it doesn’t matter whether you play for the boys or girls.” As part of his new job, Chancellor has taken on the head football coaching role at Maribyrnong Sports Academy. “I wish I had the opportunity to go there when I was growing up,” he said. “Sport is an important part of growing up for young boys and girls. There’s the opportunity to work on team work, camaraderie and it helps round them as people. “It’s an opportunity to work with some of the younger players as well.” Chancellor said he hoped to begin pre-season within the next month, especially for the girls who kick off their season in February. “To get them training is exciting for those kids, boys and girls who have not had a season of footy and were doing school from home.” Tara Murray

Saints eye finals berth By Tara Murray New St Albans coach Brenton Cook is intent on maintaining the club’s standing as a premiership contender. Cook, who is in his third full season for the Saints, takes over the coaching role from Robert Nikolic, who stood down after two seasons as captain-coach. Cook has previously played and coached in Western Australia and New South Wales. “Rob stepped down at the end of last year,” he said. “He’s done some really good work at the club the last two years. “I want to continue the club in the right direction, the direction Rob wanted to take it.” The Saints have climbed up the ladder in recent seasons and were awarded the senior premiership last season. The Saints successfully appealed the decision, after illegal work was done by the Clubbers on the wicket between day one and two and were awarded the premiership. Cook said they were yet to celebrate the premiership. “We thought we were in a good spot regardless of what happened at the end of the day. “We were going into the final in pretty good form having knocked off the Doutta Stars the week before. “It’s not the way to end a final, not getting to finish it off.” Cook said they were keen to take that strong form into this season. Trevor Bauer, who batted at three for the Saints, is the only out at this stage. Cook said

he might return to the field later in the season. “He’s having a break,” Cook said. “He has other commitments and travels from Mordialloc, so he’ll see how it goes.” A few former players have returned and will add depth across the club as they look to field three strong sides. Cook said they were hoping some of the younger players kept progressing through into the senior side. “We’ve got some younger guys who are coming through. There’s about three under-18s that we would like to keep bringing through. “Yuvraj Singh is starting to come of age and Kyle Chamberlain played most of last season in the seconds. “Shaun McAndrew is a keeper and batsman. We’re really keen to develop them and bring them along when the opportunities arise.” The Saints kick off their season on Saturday against the Doutta Stars. All matches this season will be one-dayers.

New Wyndham Basketball Association general manager Craig Armstead believes there’s plenty of room to grow the sport in the municipality. Armstead, who has had a long involvement in sports administration, was appointed to the general manager role in September. Having spent recent years working in football at the Essendon District Football League and then Williamstown, Armstead is enjoying the return to basketball. He was previously president of the Melbourne Tigers and has worked for former NBL club the South Dragons. “It’s been a unique start to the job,” Armstead said. “It was four to five weeks without meeting any of the staff face-to-face. “There were several things for me that interested me in the job. Part of that is population growth and the last census shows it’s a big area. It’s growing and it’s culturally diverse. There’s plenty of challenges and opportunities. “I’m passionate about sports participation and administration and I love basketball. My aim is to use my knowledge and experience to continue to build on the WBA.” Armstead said there was a big opportunity to grow the sport in Wyndham on a local and state level. “I’m keen and excited by the opportunity,” he said. “Basketball is underrepresented in the west of Melbourne and there’s opportunities and challenges around that. We’ve got the under-18 championships and the Kevin Coombs Cup at Eagle Stadium next year, which is a significant event. “It’s one piece that will allow us to showcase the west of Melbourne. We want it to be a legacy and use it to help drive participation and awareness in the west of Melbourne.” Armstead said the association would love to get involved with the state’s top competition, NBL1, down the track. Some training has resumed for the Wyndham sides, with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. Armstead said they were hoping to get full competitions back in the next four weeks. Tara Murray

Brand is seen as one of the top key defender prospects ahead of next month’s AFL draft ,with many clubs watching the key position player. Essendon has the right to match any bid for Brand, a Next Generation Academy player linked to the Bombers, on draft night. A die-hard Bombers supporter, playing for Essendon would be a dream come true for Brand. “I grew up supporting Essendon and we’re an Essendon family through dad’s bloodline,” he said. “It would honestly be a dream come true to play for the Bombers … but I’m open to any club. “Anywhere would be a dream come true for me to play the sport I love, and do it professionally at the highest level. “I dreamt about it as a little kid running

around the backyard, but I’m trying to stay as calm as possible.” As an NGA member, Brand spent time with Essendon during the pre-season and has been in touch with them during the year. He also had Fletcher, who played 400 AFL games for the Bombers, as his backline coach for school football at PEGS. Brand said he was lucky to have been able to learn from Fletcher. “He has definitely taught me a few of his tricks along the way and showed me how to go about your football on field and off field with game vision, how you can improve your defensive capabilities and one-on-one skills.” Tony Lucas, who coached Brand at the Sunbury Lions, is another person who made a big impact on his career. “I played my juniors at Macedon,” Brand said. “I came back to Sunbury to play under Tony Lucas in the under-18s in 2018. Credit to him, he pushed me pretty hard during that year and probably developed me into the player I am physically and mentally today.”

Brand, who is sitting his year 12 exams, said this year was about working on the areas he could. “I’ve done a fair bit of work in the previous years, hopefully to get my name read out on draft night,” he said. “I took on a training program put together by our high performance manager at Vic Metro. It was a pretty rigorous program. “I’ve tried to show my progression through lockdown. Speaking to clubs, they’ve been asking what have you been doing to stay fit and improving on your inadequacies. “I’ve been trying to tick off little boxes.” Brand was selected for the AFL combine and tested alongside other Victorian players earlier this month. A hamstring strain meant he couldn’t do all the testing. While the nerves have started to set in for Brand, he said his year 12 study was keeping him focused. Tara Murray

Coleman joins Footscray By Tara Murray After a long drawn out off season, Footscray is ready for the return of matches in Victorian Premier Cricket. Like cricketers across Melbourne, the Bulldogs have been left off the field, with COVID-19 restrictions delaying pre-season training and matches. Bulldogs coach Allan Wise said everyone had been keen to return to training and get things under way. “It has been a long drawn out off season for everyone, not just in a cricket sense,” he said. “Everyone is excited to have normality after an abrupt end to last season. “We’ve started training and working towards a start date.” Wise said there hadn’t been much player turnover across all four grades, which has proved beneficial with such a short pre-season and limited time to get to know people. The Bulldogs though have one big recruit in Melbourne Stars bowler Jackson Coleman.

Wise said with the competition now only one-day matches due to COVID-19, Coleman was set for an even bigger role. “We had some pressure with injuries last season, especially losing our recruit Jake Reed to an ACL injury. “Someone like Jackson is a mature bowler who has been around for a number of years and has played state one-day cricket and T20 cricket. “He is an experienced recruit which is heightened with only one-day cricket, which is somewhat a speciality for him.” Coleman is likely to play the opening games before heading off for his BBL commitments. He will return to the Bulldogs later in the season. Wise said that period was a good chance for other players to have an opportunity. He said they would take a healthy list into the season, with several youngsters set to take the next step. “Dylan Brasher and Jordan Buckingham are in the Cricket Victoria Emerging Squad and that

is an endorsement of their improvement and continuing to give them the best opportunities. “We’ve got a couple of young players coming through the grades. It’s a good catchment area and we have a good strong list.” The Bulldogs finished last season in second spot, but lost in the opening week of the finals to Melbourne. They were due to play St Kilda in the semi-finals, which were cancelled due to COVID-19. After its win in the first week of finals, Melbourne was the highest ranked team and was awarded the premiership. Wise said they were hoping to have another strong season. “Last year our one-day form was a little bit patchy,” he said. “That format is about match winners and we think that we have them. “We improved last year in the one-day format, but our two-day form was better.” The Bulldogs start their season on November 28 against Greenvale.

The Western Rams are building on this year’s momentum ahead of next year’s Riddell District Netball League season. The Rams, which were formerly known as Rockbank, put together a strong line-up for this year but didn’t get on the court with the season cancelled due to COVID-19. A number of players who returned to the club for this year have signed on for next year. Star shooter Rebecca Hicks headlines those returning, along with Marie Bolitho, Olivia Burrow and Danni Jane Umaki. All are set to play a key role in the Rams A-grade side. Rams coach Nathan Selvidge said they were happy with how things were looking ahead of next year. “A lot of girls from the year before have recommitted and we’ve got confirmation that the girls who were supposed to come back and play this season are returning. “It’s looking like a really strong team. Getting Becca back is a step in the right direction. “She’ll make a huge improvement in the shooting end and the girls from the season before will slide in around her. “Getting the top level girls back like Becca and Deej will improve the depth, so we not just have a strong A-grade side, but B and C grade sides.” Selvidge said it was encouraging for the club that players wanted to come back. The club’s netball program has traditionally struggled, having made A-grade finals just once, in 2018, when they made it to the preliminary final. “It shows we’re doing the right thing,” Selvidge said. “We’re trying to get a good vibe around the club.” The Rams missed finals by one game in 2019, with Selvidge keen on returning to finals next year. “We’re hoping this season to be in the top three teams,” he said. “It’s a step in the right direction.” Selvidge said they were happy with the side, but they were still open to more players joining the club. He said if easing COVID-19 restrictions allow, they would like to start training in the next few weeks. The club is also hoping to get junior netball teams strted for the first time, to help create a pathway to the seniors. They are looking for players in under-9s, 11s, 13s, 15s and 17s.
