Tiny baby Hunter continues to defy the odds – just like his mum Chloe Zammit. Delivered by emergency cesarean on July 5 at 27 weeks, Hunter weighed little more than a block of butter at 811 grams and set a record as the smallest baby born at Joan Kirner Hospital in Sunshine. Ms Zammit, who was told by doctors in 2018 that should couldn’t have anymore children, said she counted herself and Hunter “lucky to be here”. “It was a high-risk pregnancy … When they delivered Hunter, I didn’t think I would hear him cry but he cried and I was so relieved,” she said. “I didn’t get to kiss him at all for six days and I had my first cuddle on July 12.” Hunter’s first three months were spent on a breathing machine, having blood transfusions, COVID-19 tests and fighting infection. Doctors believed he would need oxygen for the next two years but Hunter proved them wrong and is now breathing on his own. “He’s a little machine and I’m so thankful for all the support that we have received,” Ms Zammit said. Support for crash victims By Benjamin Millar Friends of a Hillside family involved in a serious crash are seeking public support to help steer them through the recovery. Mark Esposito and his three boys were on their way home from school recently when an allegedly stolen truck that was fleeing from police crashed into their car on Melton Valley Drive, forcing it off the road and into a telegraph pole. All four were taken to hospital suffering serious injuries, with Mr Esposito sustaining a fractured spine. Close family friend Manny Chircop said the crash was a severe blow for the family and follows an earlier road accident that left Mr Esposito in a long coma and fighting for his life.

Mr Chircop said that his friend had lost his successful landscaping business following the first crash and the latest setback was yet another cruel twist of fate. “Mark has three fractures in his spine, but I think the biggest concern is the oldest son,
he hit his head on the windscreen and has numbness right down his side,” he said. “The youngest has a broken arm between his elbow and the shoulder.” Mr Chircop said Mr Esposito and the three boys are now back at home after stints in the hospital, but all are in a lot of pain and further surgery may still be on the cards. He has set up a GoFundMe page in a bid to help the family pay bills and put food on the table. “I had to do something he’s a good mate of mine and it made me sick,” he said. Another victim of the crash was Mr Esposito’s restored classic car, written off due to the heavy impact. “We’re part of a car club and that was his
pride and joy,” Mr Chircop said. “Mark has done a lot of work on it himself, it was the last thing he still had left from before his accident.” A 33-year-old Melton South man driving the truck that was being pursued by police allegedly attempted to flee the scene after the crash, but crashed into an embankment near the Western Highway and was arrested nearby. He is facing a series of charges including dangerous driving causing injury, reckless conduct endangering life, unlicensed driving and failure to render assistance. Mr Chircop said almost $30,000 has been raised to help the family but more donations would be gratefully received. Donations can be made via gofundme.com/esposito-boyssupport-fund.

Brimbank Leisure Centres win three awards Brimbank Leisure Centres won three awards at the 2020 Aquatics and Recreation Victoria Awards – including the Sustainability Award, Customer Service Award, and a prestigious Facility Management of the Year Award. The Facility Management of the Year Award recognised improvements to Brimbank Leisure Centres in 2019. Brimbank Leisure Centres have achieved some incredible results in the past year, despite the very significant challenges presented by COVID-19, including more than 30,000 extra visits and gaining an extra 300 members.
We have introduced 24-hour gym access at Sunshine Leisure Centre and completed the design and planning of the exciting new St Albans Health and Wellbeing Hub, which will replace the old St Albans Leisure Centre. We have also improved our environmental footprint at Sunshine Leisure Centre, by ‘thinking outside the box’ and adopting a mix of innovative technologies and simple, yet smart, solutions – such as using up-cycled building materials for the outdoor café, and reducing plastic waste. City’s new-look council By Esther Lauaki Six more women have been elected as part of Brimbank’s revamped council with five sitting councillors dumped. Women make up the majority of the council, elected to eight of the 11 seats on council last weekend. Former mayor Georgina Papafotiou has been ousted in Taylors ward, while Bruce Lancashire is returned with newcomers Maria Kerr and Ranka Rasic. Grasslands ward newcomers Sarah Branton and Thuy Dang were elected, joining Victoria Borg who returned. Sitting councillor Duyen
Ahn Pham just missed out on re-election despite leading on first preference votes while Janev Aziz was defeated. At just 23, Jasmine Nguyen is the youngest councillor elected in Brimbank, she will represent Harvester ward alongside returned councillor Sam David and new blood Trung Luu. They replaced deputy mayor Kim Thien Truong who was not re-elected while incumbent John Hedditch stood down from council due to health concerns. Horseshoe Bend ward’s Virginia Tachos was returned, along with newly elected Jae Papalia who step in for outgoing Daniel Allan. The 11 councillors-elect were voted in from a
pool of 55 candidates. Brimbank chief executive Helen Morrissey extended congratulations to the new councillors. “It is both an honour and a tremendous responsibility to be voted to represent the best interests of a city of 208,000 people,” Ms Morrissey said. “Together we can build a better Brimbank, a vibrant, harmonious and welcoming city that is a great place to live, work and grow – a Brimbank that is transforming to become the powerhouse of Melbourne’s west.” The councillors-elect will be officially sworn in on Tuesday (November 10) at 4.30pm and the mayoral election will be held next Tuesday at 7pm. Time to remember Brimbank residents are being urged to observe a minute’s silence and commemorate those who served and sacrificed in all wars on Remembrance Day this week. Sunshine RSL president Garry Collins and dozens of volunteers will be selling poppies as part of the annual appeal to support men and women who served in the armed forces as well as their families.
This Remembrance Day, RSL Victoria is asking all Australians to Remember to Remember – to commit to pausing for one minute at 11am on November 11 to mark when the guns fell silent on the Western Front after the bloodshed of World War I. The Melbourne Remembrance Day service will be broadcast via the RSL Victoria Facebook page from 10.45am. The theme for
this year’s service will be the 75th anniversary of the end of the World War II. Trams, cars and busses will stop as musicians stationed at iconic Melbourne landmarks join in unison for the annual bugle playing of The Last Post in a solemn tribute to the fallen.

Ring of steel comes down Brimbank residents awoke this week to more freedoms as the state government took another big step towards Covid normal following nine straight days of zero new cases. With just four known active cases remaining in the state, the government on Sunday announced a raft of changes to coronavirus restrictions, including the removal of the 25-kilometre limit on travel from home for Melburnians, the reopening of cinemas and galleries and a slight relaxation of restrictions on household visitors. Regional Victoria’s “ring of steel” was scrapped on Monday with a new push for tourism to hard-hit areas. Premier Daniel Andrews on Sunday said the state would be “whole again”. “Nothing about this year has been easy,” Mr Andrews said. “But the hardest thing of all has been missing the people we love most. “Collectively, we’ve missed the big moments and the small. “You can still only have a maximum of two people to visit per day. Going forward though, those two people don’t need to be from the same household, and they’ll be able to come at different times. “It’s really important that people stick within these rules.” Additional changes include restaurants, pubs, and cafes able to host up to 40 customers indoors and 70 outdoors. Gyms and indoor sports facilities can open with up to 20 visitors – subject to density limits – and indoor sport for children can recommence. Wearing masks remains mandatory. Indoor religious ceremonies, including funerals, will be increased to a 20-person limit, while there will be 50 allowed outside. There is no change for weddings. Overnight accommodation will reopen with limits on those who can stay. Cinemas, galleries, museums, and music halls can open with a limit of 20 people per space. Mr Andrews also announced more easing of restrictions that would come into effect from November 22. Private gatherings would increase to 10 people, hospitality venues will be able to have 100 people indoors and 200 people outside. “There has been a lot of pain and hurt and there is a need for healing, for investment, for all sorts of repair. The most important thing of all that all of us has to do is to stay the course on this, to be as stubborn as the virus,” Mr Andrews said. Esther Lauaki

A Keilor Downs man was nabbed by police twice and had two vehicles impounded in the space of 90 minutes. Public Order Response Team members patrolling St Albans as part of Operation Saturn caught the man on October 30, first at 11.15am and again at 12.45pm, driving while suspended in two separate vehicles. One was a work vehicle (unregistered) and the other was a family car. Both vehicles were impounded at a tow cost of $950 and $932 respectively. The man in his 30s faces multiple driving charges and will appear before a magistrate in the new year.

101 joyous years Jean Algie was the toast of the town last week when she celebrated her 101st birthday. The Sydenham resident celebrated with friends and family at Arcare aged care last Thursday and said she was thrilled by all the love and support. Ms Algie migrated from Scotland to Australia in 1959 with her husband and three children. “We had nothing,” she said. “It was challenging, but that’s life, you just keep getting on with it. I’ve always worked and I’ve always seen the fun in things. I love talking and having a laugh.” Ms Algie worked as a house cleaner in Toorak into her 80s and many of her former employers still keep in contact today. These days, her main source of happiness lies in receiving phone calls and visits from her
children and grandchildren. Although not as steady on her feet as she once was, Ms Algie finds joy in the lighter side of life. “You have to laugh, you have to have fun and you have to take things as they come.” These days she’s a proud grandmother of five and a great-grandmother of five. Amazon delivers jobs boost By Benjamin Millar More than 300 new jobs will be delivered to the Melton area when global retail giant Amazon Australia opens a huge new local distribution centre next year. Amazon Australia recently announced it will open a second Melbourne fulfilment centre in Ravenhall in late 2021, creating about 200 jobs during construction and 300 ongoing roles on completion. The new centre in Dexus’ Horizon 3023 estate will be 37,000 square metres – almost double the size of the Melbourne Cricket Ground – and capable of holding up to six million items. The new centre will be Victoria’s second Amazon site, joining Dandenong South, and helping Amazon more than double its local operating footprint. Amazon Australia operations director Craig Fuller said the new site will enable Amazon to expand its range and speed up shipping to local customers. “We’re proud to have played a unique role in supporting our Victorian customers during this unprecedented time, helping them to get the items they need for their families without leaving their homes,” he said. “Furthermore, we are dedicated to enriching and giving back to the communities in which we operate and we look forward to working with Melton City Council, and the surrounding schools and local community groups, to create impactful community programs.” Melton council chief executive Kelvin Tori said having Amazon in Ravenhall would benefit all involved, including local residents. “Amazon’s decision to base its new fulfilment centre here makes great business

Survey examines future of news Newspaper readers in Brimbank are being urged to have their say on the future of country media in Australia’s biggest survey on local news. The survey, launched nationally this week, is part of the largest study of its kind in Australia, running for three years with almost $250,000 backing from the Australian Research Council, one of the federal government’s main competitive research funding agencies. Deakin University, RMIT University and Country Press Australia, the peak regional media organisation, of which this newspaper is
a member, are leading the study. The project’s lead investigator, Deakin Associate Professor Kristy Hess, said the future of local newspapers depended on support from local audiences. The survey aims to give people a voice on ways to improve the sustainability of their local paper. “If you read your local newspaper, then it’s absolutely vital you fill in this survey to show your support for local news. We are depending on you,” she said. “We want to hear your ideas and feedback on the role of country newspapers in these digital times. We want to know what
the paper means to you and how it might improve into the future.” Project partner and Country Press Australia executive director, Bruce Morgan, said the project was as much about regional communities as it was about local media businesses. “Local media outside metropolitan Australia is very much the journal of record for the towns and regions it represents,” he said. “It is not exaggerating to say that, should we lose local media representation, it will impact not just on the fabric of those communities, but
the very principles of democracy. That is, the ability to record, champion, challenge and hold accountable. That is why this highly-credible, well-funded research is vital to those communities and their future.” The survey should take up to 10 minutes and will ask a range of questions that relate to your views on local newspapers. Dishing up compassion Fostering a community connection in Brimbank can be as simple as sharing a meal. That’s why Taylors Hill resident Deepti Alurkar and her husband began delivering homemade meals earlier this year for those struggling with food insecurity as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The self-funded project has picked up traction in the past five months and Ms Alurkar and a team of volunteers distributed more than 750 meals in the past week. Ms Alurkar, who heads up the Multicultural Association of Community Empowerment, said she started the food delivery initiative to help her neighbours and meet more people. “As a migrant I realise the importance of family and friends because we arrived here and we didn’t know anyone. I started a social club with eight mums in a backyard … and now we have about 500 mums. “We started a not for profit organisation
and through that we do a lot of initiatives, activities, donation drives and fundraising for the community. “Everyone was being impacted by COVID and people were losing jobs left, right and centre. Many people are facing this for the first time, they have a lot to deal with.” Ms Alurkar said the service delivers “free meals with dignity, no questions asked”. Dinners include homemade curries, pasta dishes, soups, fried rice. At the height of the pandemic, volunteers were also delivering groceries to international students and donating food parcels to council organisations. “It’s a way to connect with our neighbours,” Ms Alurkar said. “I hope to motivate others to do the same. Hotel a Keilor landmark By Esther Lauaki If the walls of Keilor Hotel could talk – the stories they would tell. The landmark celebrated 171 years with a small gathering of locals earlier this month. Keilor Historical Society president Susan Jennison said the history of the building and the people associated with it dates back to the Gold Rush era in the early 19th Century. “There are so many stories entwined with this extremely important building, which is an integral part of Keilor region’s history,” Ms Jennison said.

Police are on the lookout for a serial petrol thief suspected of more than 20 drive-offs across Melbourne’s western suburbs. Investigators believe the same woman has been involved in up to 24 petrol drive-offs in Melton, Taylors Lakes, Ravenhall, Burnside, Derrimut, Deer Park, Kealba, Ardeer, St Albans and Sunshine. On each occasion the woman has been driving a dark-coloured older model Mitsubishi, possibly an Outlander, with false number plate registration RYI 757. Investigators have released images of a woman who they believe can assist with their inquiries. She is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, a g e d between 25-and-35-years-old, with a stocky build, and long blonde hair which at times has been died pink. Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or

“The Galway Arms Tavern, and the Red Lion were former names for the hotel. “The last name change occurred in 1862 when Mathew Goudie bought the hotel for 1000 pounds and called it Keilor Hotel.” Ownership has been retained within one family since 1862 – with the hotel now owned by Ray Dodds. “The list of licensees, which are displayed on an honour roll inside the bistro area, shows a large proportion of women … because their husbands were not suitable candidates for becoming licensees due to gambling offences or other illegal activities and therefore they would have records,” Ms Jennison said. She said that other notable milestones were also marked by the Arundel Road Bridge and the Caroline Chisholm Shelter Shed site.

Mother and son traffickers jailed By Esther Lauaki A Brimbank mother and son have been convicted and sentenced to prison for supplying and trafficking a commercial quantity of methamphetamine as part of a criminal syndicate. The duo appeared before the Melbourne County Court on October 28. The 28-year-old Sunshine North man, charged with a string of illicit drug offences,
including trafficking illicit drugs and dealing the proceeds of crime, was handed a jail term of 12 years with a non-parole period of six years. The 57-year-old Deer Park woman, charged with trafficking one kilogram of methamphetamine, was given a 10-year jail term with a non-parole period of seven years. The pair were charged following a multi-agency law enforcement operation, known as Operation Sunrise, which investigated a large-scale heroin syndicate
operating in Melbourne in 2018 and believed to be responsible for the importation of an estimated $20 million dollars of illicit drugs using international airline cabin crew. The Victoria Joint Organised Crime Taskforce – comprising Australian Federal Police (AFP), Australian Border Force, Victoria Police and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission – launched inquiries into the pair in December 2018 as part of a wider investigation into the criminal syndicate.
Taskforce members arrested the woman at her Deer Park home on March 8, 2019, after she facilitated the sale of a kilogram of methamphetamine, which was delivered by her son to a co-accused on December 12, 2018. The man was arrested at his Sunshine North home on January 8, 2019, after he delivered the methamphetamine to a co-accused, while also providing an additional five kilograms of methamphetamine to the same co-accused.
Back in the pool Brimbank children are thrilled to be back in the pool and learning to swim again. Aqua Schools Keilor Park, which also has a school in Sunbury, welcomed children back to swimming lessons this week. As part of the state’s roadmap out of the pandemic, more restrictions were eased from Monday, including reopening indoor pools for up to 20 swimmers at a time. Aqua School, owned by Murat Binyazar and Emre Gul, offers beginners lessons and a raft of swim safe education programs for about 400 children aged between three months and 12 years old. Aqua Schools Keilor Park manager Estela Micallef said children were behind on their lessons and keen to return to the water. “We finally have the green light to reopen and return to swimming lessons on Monday 9 November,” Ms Micallef said. “We have had a great response from parents who are so happy that their kids will be back to learning to swim.
“There are a lot of unsupervised swimming environments that people will have access to when COVID opens up. We don’t simply teach kids how to swim, we teach them about how to get themselves out of a situation. “Kids are going through a whole swimming and water safety program where we teach them about swimming at the beach, by themselves, with clothes on, swimming between the flags.” Ms Micallef said a stringent COVIDSafe plan is in place with strict hygiene measures, contact tracing and declaration forms. “We want people to be confident in us that they can bring their kids back into swimming lessons safely,” she said. “We are COVIDSafe and ensure all safety and hygiene procedures. If one has been bashed over bad roads there may be squeaks from the body and trim. So it makes sense to find some bumpy stuff during your test drive. As the Lexus is relatively low slung for aerodynamic reasons it can suffer scrapes under the front bumper. If these are out of sight and only minor you may care to ignore them. On the earliest models some build quality problems were reported on overseas cars, these appear to have been sorted by the time the CT200h arrived in Australia. Smoothness and quietness are major features in all Lexus models. Though the CT200h isn’t quite in the same class as its bigger brothers it is still very pleasant to travel in. Interestingly, the Lexus CT200 was the first model to be sold in Australia only as a hybrid, there was no pure-petrol option. Again in the Lexus manner the CT200h’s interior is finished to a high quality both in materials and fit and finish. Interior space is good in the front seat but the back is tight for legroom. The typical mum, dad and two kids family will find it fine. Check the boot, though, as it’s relatively shallow and may not suit full-on family needs. This smallish Lexus is a five-door hatchback with styling that takes its own direction. A facelift in April 2014 added the Lexus ‘spindle grille’ shape at the front. Inside there were changes to the trim designs. Another facelift in October 2017 again saw styling changes, including a fashionable honeycomb grille. The tailgate was renewed to use a similar design to the ‘L’ shaped lights used in larger model Lexuses. The infotainment screen was increased from 7 inches to 10.3 inches. Safety was further improved by a pre-collision warning system and autonomous emergency braking and lane departure warning. Lexus CT200h is still on the new-car market after close to seven years. While far from being a hot hatch the CT200h has a touch of sporting flair thanks to the sharp throttle responses that are a feature of all electric, or part-electric vehicles. Lexus CT200h has a 1.8-litre petrol engine assisted by an electric motor and drives the front wheels through a CVT automatic. There

SPORT Giants rebound from promotion disappointment

Werribee Giants are determined to come back bigger and stronger in Baseball Victoria summer league division 2. After strong performances last season, the Giants had hoped they had done enough to earn promotion into division 1. While they claimed the minor premiership, which put them in contention for promotion, the club was left disappointed when Baseball Victoria decided not to promote them because they didn’t have the numbers for the junior team. Giants president Dave Bishop-Worn said it was disappointing for the team and the club would look to ensure it met all the points for qualification for promotion next time round. The Giants were knocked out in the preliminary final. “We will come back bigger and stronger,” he said.
“We’re looking to be at the pointy end of the table again. The guys in the ones are keen, so hopefully we can go that one step further.” Bishop-Worn said that they would have a similar team to the past season. Like most other teams, they’ve had trouble securing an import due to travel restrictions. “It’s basically the same team as last year, with a couple of returning players, who haven’t played for a few years. “The numbers are good and they will start to filter down to the other sides.” There has been a coaching change, with Ryan Balzer taking over from John Curnow. Curnow is continuing on as a player. Bishop-Worn said the club was rapt that Balzer, who has been president at the club in 2018 and 2019, had been appointed coach. The division 1 season is expected to start in early December.
Darley bounces back By Tara Murray Darley bounced back with a win following its first loss since early 2019 in the Ballarat Cricket Association. After an uncharacteristic performance against East Ballarat last weekend, the Lions were on fire at home against Ballarat-Redan in Saturday’s one-dayer. The Lions bowled Ballarat-Redan out for 150 with six balls remaining of the 50 overs. Dayle Locke and Hasitha Wickramasinghe took two wickets each for the Lions. The Lions, led by Danza Hyatt, made light work of the chase, reaching the mark with just over 22 overs remaining. The Lions made 2-151 with Hyatt finishing unbeaten on 80, in an innings which included seven fours and three sixes. Speaking before the game, Lions coach Brian Wheelahan said they had spoken about their poor performance during the week. He said they knew they could play better. “We were outplayed a little,” he said. “We had a quick chat about it. We were really embarrassed about it, as it’s not us. “The [winning] run had to come to an end but not like that as we departed from all aspects of our game.” Wheelahan said they had been confident of bouncing back and that’s exactly what they did. The win has the Lions in fourth spot after three rounds. Wheelahan said overall they were happy with how things had gone so far. “Golden Point was the side we were meant to play in the grand final and we beat them in round one,” he said. “It’s a really even competition and if you’re not on your game, anyone can get you. “Hopefully last week was a reality check.” Wheelahan was among the interested onlookers on Sunday, to see what restrictions Premier Daniel Andrews would ease. With the regional and metro ‘ring of steel’ in place, Wheelahan, who lives in metro Melbourne, hasn’t been able to attend any training or games the first three rounds. With the border coming down, Wheelahan will be back at training this week and at the game on Saturday. In a boost for the Lions, Rahmatullah Khwaja, who like Wheelahan lives in Melbourne, is now available for selection. “It has been frustrating just talking on FaceTime,” Wheelahan said. “Ryan is excited and looking forward to bringing in a lot of youth and enthusiasm to the ones,” he said. “He’s been part of Werribee for a long time. He’ll coach the firsts and the whole club. “He’s an accredited coach and they’re really hard to come by, especially in baseball.” As well as having good numbers in the seniors, the club has had good numbers with their junior sides. Bishop-Worn said everyone was keen to get back to train and socialise with their friends and teammates. The club is looking for players for its under-12 teams at its satellite clubs Tarneit Rangers and the Point Cook Pirates. Both play in a western suburbs competition on Friday nights. Tara Murray
New coach for Lakers women New Caroline Springs women’s coach Dean Ellis decided the time was right to step up and coach his daughter. Ellis was recently named the club’s women’s coach for next year’s Western Region Football League season, He has previously coached his son and been president of the Lakers. Ellis, who has watched the women’s side the past few years, said it was a good opportunity to coach. He replaces Colin Clohesy. “I’ve coached my son in the past and my daughter plays football at Caroline Springs,” he said. “I thought I would stand up and do something for her. “She is pretty excited by it.” Ellis admits that he’s an old fashioned coach that does give a bit of spray, but knows that women’s football is different to men’s. He was president of the club when it first introduced female sides. “The way women’s footy is, it’s come a long way,” he said. “There’s so much passion the girls have for it and I’m going to try and tap into that passion. “We’ve got sides in the under-18s and under-16s and I want to have a pathway for them. “I want them to have somewhere to play, if they can’t or don’t want to play at a higher level.” The Lakers have made finals every year since first fielding a women’s side in 2017. They were runners-up in 2018 to Manor Lakes, before falling short in the 2019 decider to Spotswood. The 2020 season was cancelled due to COVID-19. Ellis said he expected them to still have that core group of players, despite no football this season. “We had a core group of about 25 players and hopefully most of them will return. “There’s a few 18s girls who are coming up and this will be their first season playing in under-18s. “It’s a big step up for those players, but we have the other players there to help them with that transition.” The club is still waiting for AFL Victoria to announce when clubs can return to training. Heath Scotland takes the reins at Sunshine New Sunshine coach Heath Scotland was keen to get back into local football after losing his job in the AFL system. A development coach at North Melbourne this year, Scotland was one of several in the industry to lose his job due to COVID-19. Realistic about his chances of getting another job in the AFL for next season, Scotland decided to return to local football, signing with the Western Region Football League division 1 club. “I’m looking forward to it,” Scotland said. “Looking at it, 30 per cent of AFL coaches lost their jobs, so it was going to be difficult to step back into another role. “I wanted to get back into footy and get back into coaching and I love coaching local footy. I was approached by Sunshine and I sat on it for a week or two and now the rest is history.”

Scotland previously coached his junior club Darley, taking them to the 2017 Ballarat Football League premiership, before moving to North Melbourne.
Scotland said talking with people at Sunshine, he could see some correlation between the Kangaroos and Darley. Like the Devils, the Kangaroos have a young up-and-coming list. “It ticks a lot of boxes,” he said. “Sunshine is a really strong club and is filled by good people. They were speaking about correlations between Sunshine and Darley. “The club has struggled the last year or two, but made the grand final a couple of years before that. “There’s the challenge of building the side from down the bottom and bringing them back up. It’s an opportunity to test myself.” Scotland, who played 268 AFL games for Carlton and Collingwood, said he was aware of the level of competition in the WRFL with some of his family members having previously
played in the competition. Scotland replaces Adam Contessa who stood down from the role in late August. He said the club was now in the process of getting its list in place for next season. “Most players don’t want to commit until a club has signed a coach,” he said. “Now that’s happened, we’re going to look at bringing back Sunshine people to Sunshine. “We’re not going to be bringing in people left, right and centre. “Every club needs to bring in players when they’re down the bottom, so a couple of players will be essential. “We’ll start with looking to bring in locals and then see what we need from there. Eagles hope to soar By Tara Murray After a long winter of lockdown, Yarraville Cricket Club has had an influx of players ahead of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west season. With a season now confirmed, Eagles captain-coach Matthew Grose said they had a record number of players register to play. “I think it would have been really devastating if we hadn’t been able to play the sport that we love, like the footballers through winter,” he said. “Our sport has been a benefactor, with a prolonged period of lockdown, we’ve been overwhelmed with a record number of players. “It’s going to be difficult to organise training.” Grose said the majority of players had returned from the past season, while some former players had returned and would be looking to fill spots in the top two sides. A number of younger players were also keen to push their claims for a senior spot. “We’ve got a lot of young juniors who have been coming through the teams,” he said.
“They want to get some experience at senior level. “We will have five senior teams. Last season the fifth team was mainly juniors. We’re hoping some of those kids will fill spots in the fourth team and push higher.” From the first XI, two players from the past season won’t be returning. Arjun Sehrawat, who was named in the Victorian under-15 team, has moved on to Premier Cricket club Footscray. He took 17 wickets in the first XI as a 14-year-old. Tom Saunders, who came into the side in the back half of the season, has stepped away from cricket for family reasons. Grose said they had been able to fill those roles with a couple of key inclusions. “I think the players coming back from last year, after a season off or injury, will help strengthen the side. “Sam Shearer started last season [played five games] before needing to have shoulder surgery and will be a valuable recruit. “Mohan D’Souza played with us two seasons ago before missing last season. They’re both
super keen to come back.” Grose said the playing group had put high expectations on itself after a strong 2019-20 season where they finished second in their group. They were knocked out in the semi-finals by Werribee. Minor premiers Williamstown was awarded the premiership after the grand final was called off due to COVID-19. Grose said they were hoping to replicate that success not only next season, but in the long term. “We weren’t far off it … we were outplayed on the second day of the semi-final against Werribee. “Internally we think we’re good enough and really well suited to one-day cricket. “If we continue with that white ball form, we will take a lot of beating again. “We’ve got a lot of depth in our squad which is what one-day cricket is about. We’ve got a really even deep squad. “We certainly have high expectations of ourselves.” The Eagles face local rival Altona in the opening round of the season on November 21.
New Sunbury Lions women’s coach Daniel Brady decided to take on the coaching role after a couple of years cheering from the sidelines. With two of his daughters playing football with the Lions in recent years, Brady has been a keen observer and supporter. Phil Lithgow stepped down from the coaching role following the cancelled 2020 season and after moving away from the area. Brady decided to put his hand up to coach the Essendon District Football League side. Brady said he had always been keen to support his children with their different sports. “I became president of the Melton Basketball Association with my daughters playing basketball, but the two older ones are now playing football,” he said. “I was down at training sessions more and more and I started to get the passion to teach them. “They want to learn and know more and more. It was in the back of my mind and it snowballed from there.” Brady has never coached women’s or girls’ football, but has an extensive football and sporting background. He played football for nearly 20 years at the Sunbury Kangaroos, winning three premierships and having the honour of being the club’s first senior captain. Brady later stepped into coaching and held a number of different coaching roles, senior and junior, at clubs across the Riddell District, Central Highlands and Ballarat football leagues. With his daughters playing basketball, he started coaching basketball, which led him to taking on the Melton Basketball Association presidency, which he recently gave up. Brady said he was looking forward to the challenge of coaching football. “They asked me if I was able to recruit players from other teams, but with not coaching girls’ or women’s football I don’t have that ability. “For me, there’s a good mob of under-18s and they’re going to be the recruits and we need to provide that pathway.” Former Sunbury Kangaroos’ women’s coach Brian Millett has been appointed assistant coach. “Phil has done a great job in setting it up … and the girls and myself are keen to keep it going,” he said. “I don’t want to take the foot off the pedal in that regards.” Tara Murray
