Sacrifices remembered By Goya Dmytryshchak Australia’s most elite troops say this Remembrance Day the COVID-19 global pandemic has shone a different light on the meaning of sacrifice. Recently retired SAS Major Mark Bainbridge, who spent most of his 22 years’ service in the special forces on multiple tours to the Middle East, said this year had brought into perspective the meaning of real hardship. “I think Remembrance Day this year helps keep perspective on things,” the Newport RSL member said.

“If you think back, all those generations, and saw the commitment and sacrifice they made over a number of years … they were so resilient. “I think, in the light of today’s current global crisis, it really helps me keep perspective on current times versus some real hardships that people have been through before.” Major Bainbridge said he also reflected on those who made the ultimate sacrifice. “I’ve had a lot of my mates and colleagues killed in action,” he said. “Of the 41 Australians who have lost their lives overseas in the last few decades, I do know a lot of them and their families.

“So, I usually get in touch with their families and let them know we’re thinking of them.” Fellow Newport RSL member, Lieutenant Rebecca Hogan, followed her parents’ footsteps into the British navy full-time in 2002. She transferred from the UK military into the Australian navy in 2013, predominantly flying helicopters off the back of ships. “In the UK, we don’t have Anzac Day so Remembrance Day is our primary day to remember our war heroes and the armistice,” she said. “I do have many generations of family in the forces so, for me, remembrance revolves around family.

“I’ve been the one away deployed but I’ve also been the child with the parent deployed and seen the struggles that mum went through. “When dad was away doing his bit, she had to step up and be both parents to two children. “So, for me, Remembrance Day is as much about remembering the sacrifices that families have made in sending their loved ones away to the campaigns, as much as the service of the individuals themselves. “I think being ADF helped me cope with COVID a lot more … I remember my dad saying to me when we went into the first lockdown, just treat it like a deployment.”

COVID-19 community testing site at Shorten Reserve carpark To support the State Government’s efforts in stopping the spread of COVID-19, a drivethrough COVID testing facility has been set up in the Shorten Reserve carpark off Market Street in West Footscray. This facility has been established by the Department of Health and Human Sciences (DHHS) to replace the Bunnings West Footscray facility, which has closed as the store moves to reopen following an easing of restrictions. The COVID-19 testing facility will maintain stringent infection control standards and be cordoned off to the general public. Shorten Reserve and the playground will still be available for use by the community during this time. Street dining proves a hit Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay locals are wishing for a mask-free Christmas. Crowds have flocked to cafes and restaurants in newly-turfed streets sealed off to traffic as COVID-19 restrictions ease. One of Williamstown’s most colourful and majestic buildings is on the market in what has been described as “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity”. The Old Royal Hotel, originally built in 1852 and replaced by a newer building in 1893, is being sold by an expressions of interest campaign. Selling agent, Jellis Craig director Campbell Ward, said it was a rare opportunity to acquire the historic seafront property. “One of Williamstown’s most iconic buildings, awaits a transformation,” he said. “The bulk of the interest is from local buyers wanting to convert the property into a family home.” Lantern Ghost Tours founder Jacqueline Travaglia said the hotel was named after the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Alfred Ernest Albert, who once visited on a grand tour. “It was built as superior accommodation for captains and governors,” Ms Travaglia said. “Over the years, it fell into disrepute and was known for illegal gambling. “The pub was also home to a female publican Hannah, who enjoyed a drink so much that her husband would lock her in an upstairs room to sober up … She’d beg passers-by to buy rum from her own pub, put it in a bucket and she’d hoist it back up.” The advertisement states the hotel has “towering ceilings and hydronic heating throughout 20 spacious rooms, five workable kitchens and six bathrooms”. The rear garden, on about 973 square metres with a second frontage to Aitken Street, could also be used for multi-townhouse development. Foot Pain or Heel Pain? Foot pain is extremely common, affecting more than 80% of people at some point in their lives, with heel pain being the most common of all human foot complaints. But why are such common problems seemingly so hard to treat effectively? Either only the symptoms are being addressed and not the underlying cause or the exact nature of the condition is not being identified or understood. For example, most heel pain is incorrectly assumed to be an inflammatory condition, but it is nearly always a result of nerve impingement or tissue degeneration. Tissue thickening is often mistaken for inflammation, contributing to incorrect diagnoses and treatment. Dining pods the new norm By Goya Dmytryshchak Yarraville’s Set Square Productions is rolling out COVID-safe modular dining pods to distribute across Melbourne as outdoor dining returns. Director Mark Neilsen said as restrictions eased and Melbourne started to recover, the pods were going across the city outside restaurants and cafes. “We’re in the middle of building 1700 planter boxes for the City of Melbourne,“ he said.

“They’re going all over Melbourne. “The COVID-19 pandemic restrictions have reminded us of the vital role public space plays in supporting our physical and mental wellbeing. “We need to act swiftly to retrofit our public spaces … This is where tactical urbanism is a way to quickly reconfigure public spaces to create places that are both safe and social. “We’ve been offering our expertise in pop-up and temporary installations for major sporting events, brand and marketing activations for

many years and would like to extend our service offering to councils as we reactivate Melbourne.” Set Square’s outdoor dining pods are modelled on New York’s ‘Open Restaurants’ initiative, which has been credited with helping 9500 businesses survive during the crisis. Set Square has manufactured pop-up outdoor dining pods, retail pods and outdoor dining settings that are ready to go. And it’s likely to become the new ‘COVID-normal’.

A Christmas lockdown wish has come true. When UK citizen Colin Evans couldn’t see his daughter in Williamstown due to COVID-19, he reached out to fellow Lions club members across the globe. Mr Evans contacted the Australian Lions national cake co-ordinator to send daughter Joanna Gumley and her family a famous Lions Christmas cake. Lions Club of Altona’s Maurie Tanian personally delivered the gift. “Joanna was delighted to receive the gift from her father, and she said that whenever he came to Australia he always purchased a Lions Christmas cake, especially as there is no such Lions project in England,” Mr Tanian said. School zone warning By Benjamin Millar The long hiatus from classrooms during the COVID-19-driven lockdown period has allowed bad driving habits to develop around school zones, according to police. Caroline Springs police are urging drivers to take extra care in and around schools now that students have returned to class. Caroline Springs Acting Sergeant John Harris said it’s vital that drivers stick to the designated 40km/h speed limit in school zones and make sure they’re not distracted by mobile phones when driving.

“Children can be unpredictable, and drivers need to remember this as they travel through designated 40km/h school zones,” he said. “With extra people moving about, it is so important that we take note of those reduced speed limits and stick to them.” Acting Sergeant Harris said mobile phone use remains the biggest driver distraction issue that police continue to see. “Driving at any speed while using a mobile phone has a significant impact – it can impair a driver’s reaction time, ability to maintain speed and position on the road and general awareness of other traffic,” he said. Parents are also being reminded to park correctly when letting children out, as dropping them off in the middle of the road poses a “completely unnecessary risk”. Acting Sergeant Harris warned that police will continue patrolling in and around school

zones to make sure everyone gets to and from school safely. “If you choose to do the wrong thing behind the wheel of a car, expect to get caught,” he said. “All dangerous driver behaviour, including speeding and illegal parking, will be closely monitored with the assistance of our local schools and highway patrol officers.

“We do not want to be issuing infringements, but if people choose to put lives at risk then we will hold them to account.” The 40km/h school zone speed limit is in place from 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm on weekdays during school terms. The minimum penalty for speeding in a school zone is a $207 fine and one demerit.

After more than two decades, Altona Village Traders Association president Kim Walsh is handing over the reins. New president, Altona trader Ilch Mickovski, recently represented Hobsons Bay’s four main trader groups to successfully lobby for a rates reduction. Mr Walsh first joined the original Altona traders association, which evolved into the new group. “Our goal was always to make Altona a destination,” he said. “After a whole lot of hard work and many, many events – I mean, we used to run the massive Australia Day event, we’ve had the sand sculptures in the middle of Pier Street, we’ve done the mural in Edwards Arcade, we got the summer policing program up and running. “We feel that we’ve turned Altona around and it’s now a place to be. “I just think it’s time for some fresh eyes, perhaps some new ideas. I leave it with a little bit of sadness but at the same time I am quite relieved to hand over the reins.”

Pigeon club to fly off the block By Goya Dmytryshchak It will be race to win at auction. The 94-year-old home of Yarraville Racing Pigeon Club, at 23 Regent Street, is being advertised for sale for $730,000-$780,000. It is scheduled to go under the hammer on Saturday, November 7. Club president John Saggers said there were eight remaining members of the Yarraville club. “The proceeds, we hope to put back into the sport some way or another, maybe with equipment and things like that for the pigeons,” he said.

- Tate Moore “If we fail to put it back into the sport and the pigeon club members then decide that we disperse or wind up, the money will go to charity. “One of the members actually mortgaged his house to buy the property and the members of the club, back then, paid him back so the money was reimbursed to him.” Mr Saggers said he had been around pigeons all his life and it was sad to see the clubhouse sold. His father Max and uncle Les raced pigeons as kids, before being called up to the army. “After they came out of the service, they started racing pigeons as adults … and they lived virtually across the road from each other,” Mr Saggers said.

Dedicated volunteer honoured By Goya Dmytryshchak A Yarraville resident and Sunshine Hospital health worker has been recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work with children with disabilities. Timothy Chiu was honoured in the Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation Awards for his volunteering with junior sport and recreation camps held twice a year. “It might be campfire cooking activities or we might go down to the beach and take them surfing,” he said. “Then, in the winter, there’s a ski camp

which is held at Falls Creek and we take the kids – not all of whom but many of whom are in wheelchairs – and we take them skiing or snowboarding.” Mr Chiu started volunteering with the camps 27 years ago. “I’m a physiotherapist by training and I was at university … and I saw a notice on the physiotherapy notice board seeking volunteers,” he said. “I’ve always loved school camps and I thought combining that with what I was learning at the time … might be a good match. “Essentially, it’s still the same in terms

of getting children involved and trying to build their independence and confidence and social interactions with other children with disabilities. “It’s incredible. The children are usually between the ages of eight and 17, so they have different needs at different ages. “The main thing that I see them get out of it is not only just having a great time and having fun, but the ability to challenge themselves and do something different in a very safe environment.” The awards will be formally announced as a virtual event on December 3.

Light in a tough year Teenage boxing champion Marissa Williamson has been awarded a scholarship by the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame. The scholarship gives the 18-year-old $10,000 to put towards boxing costs, access to wellbeing programs and staff, and she will be mentored by Olympic gold medallist and professional beach volleyballer Kerri Pottharst. Williamson grew up in Wyndham but moved to Ascot Vale this year. She took up boxing when she was 16. She is the 64kg Victorian Boxing Champion, 64kg Australian Boxing Champion and is on the National Futures Team which aims to train athletes for the 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2024 Olympics. Williamson said the scholarship has been the highlight of a “tough year”. She left foster care earlier this year and was temporarily homeless before finding her own

apartment. And she was all set to represent Australia at the World Youth Games in Poland last month, before it was postponed until next year due to COVID-19. Williamson said she usually trains six days a week. For the past few months she has been training at Crew Fitness and Performance in Braybrook, which was co-founded by five-time Australian boxing champion Jason Mallia. “What I have enjoyed [about boxing] is just the opportunity to travel and learn life skills, which I didn’t have the chance to do when I was younger,” she said. MY PLACE Hobsons Bay council careers support officer Wendy Grenfell is helping people find jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic. She speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. know that the environment is breathing better. During the lockdowns, where have been some of your favourite places to go or outlets to cope and maintain mental wellbeing? Going for walks and runs and always being able to find water and nature has kept me sane, centred and healthy. When locked down in Seddon recently, I re-introduced myself to the beautiful walks along the Maribyrnong River. I move back to Williamstown shortly, so I am looking forward to re-introducing myself to my favourite ‘zen’ place – the Williamstown Botanic Gardens.

Could you tell me about the jobs being created during this time? In my role as careers support coach for the Working for Victoria staff, I get to see first-hand how special this initiative is and how it stimulates economic recovery, but at the same time supports local community members and others to get back on their feet and then some.

What are you looking forward to doing when restrictions ease more so? Dinners out with loved ones and friends and regional travel. I am also looking forward to getting out and about and meeting my colleagues. I’d love to run a coaching session or a group training session in one of Hobsons Bay’s beautiful outdoor locations. It’ll make a great change to just ‘talking heads’ across a video screen.

How have things changed for you during COVID-19? My ‘day-job’ work – I am a freelance career coach and HR consultant – certainly shrunk, but then ’boom’: I picked up this role. It has been tough not seeing much of my adult children in 2020, but apart from getting used to face masks and not being able to go to the hairdressers, life is still pretty good. I have been enjoying the stillness of Melbourne and I

What are you passionate about? I’m passionate about people reaching their full potential and living their best lives. I see career being an important vehicle for achieving success in all areas of life. I am honoured to be working in this space at this vulnerable time, with these wonderful Working for Victoria staff members. The project has an amazing energy about it and every day I am grateful for the opportunity to sit at the centre of it.

My parents grew up in Footscray and moved to Hobsons Bay after my mother hopped on a train one day and put down a deposit on a Californian bungalow in Newport, where I was ultimately raised. My family and I have had a connection with Hobsons Bay ever since. I’ve gone on to raise a family of my own in Williamstown and my children and I were also educated in Hobsons Bay. I’m currently working in Hobsons Bay through the Working for Victoria program and have previously worked with Sea Shepherd Australia at their Southern Ocean headquarters in Williamstown.

Keep on top of your health Christopher Carter CEO, North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network COVID-19 has impacted all our lives in many ways, from the fear of getting the virus itself, to the restrictions in place to limit the spread and prevent the terrible situations we have seen in many countries around the world. It’s made us all more cautious about the places we go and the people we see. This has helped stop the spread of the virus, and thankfully we appear to have defeated the second wave of infections here in Victoria. But there is one place you should always feel comfortable going to if you need to – your local general practice. GPs and practice nurses in our local area have told us that some of their patients are reluctant to come in for routine tests or check-ups until the pandemic is over. Practice Nurse Emma Thompson from Bacchus Marsh Medical Centre said her clinic has been experiencing a drop-off in regular patient visits since COVID-19 began spreading widely in Australia. “A lot of patients won’t want to come out for bloods until the pandemic’s settled,” she said. For many of us delaying a check-up a few months might not be a big deal. But for people with chronic conditions, like diabetes, not keeping on top of things can have very serious consequences. “You’re more likely to suffer from complications of your disease rather than consequences of coming in to the doctor,” Ms Thompson said. “You’re less likely to catch COVID from the doctor than you are to have a secondary complication [from your existing illness].” Earlier this month the Australian Institute of

Health and Welfare released a report on breast, cervical and bowel cancer screening rates in Australia for the first half of this year. The report was extremely concerning. Breast screening plummeted in April, and overall there were nearly 150,000 less breast screening tests done in the first half of this year compared to last year. Cervical cancer screening was also well down. Every one of these tests is a chance to catch cancer earlier, when more can be done in treatment and people are more likely to recover. While we can’t say for sure that all the missed screening tests are because of COVID-19, it matches up with what we have seen across our region throughout the pandemic. It is completely normal to be concerned about COVID-19, and not going out if you don’t need to is a good thing right now. But it is OK to see your GP – just call them first. All general practices have substantial measures in place to help keep you safe, from the use of telehealth where possible, to regular cleaning, compulsory mask wearing and physical distancing in the waiting room if you have to come in. UPDATE ON THE WEST GATE TUNNEL PROJECT Work is progressing on the West Gate Tunnel Project with crews adding more lanes to the West Gate Freeway to reduce congestion, and upgrading pedestrian bridges first installed in the 1970s. New lanes one step closer Work to widen the West Gate Freeway from 8 to 12 through lanes is well advanced, after a massive amount of work over the past few months. New lanes have been created and traffic moved to the outer edge of the West Gate Freeway to create a new work site in the middle where crews can carry out further works. New bridges create new connections Vital community-linking pedestrian bridges have been installed over the West Gate Freeway, connecting communities on either side of the freeway. These integral crossings link the suburbs of Altona North with Brooklyn at Rosala Avenue, and Spotswood with Yarraville at Muir Street. The new pedestrian bridges are wider to allow pedestrians and cyclists to comfortably share the space, include improved safety features such as CCTV, lighting and higher barriers, and are accessible for people of all abilities with both ramps and stairs. The bridges will be soon be open for community use. Transforming industrial land into green space The West Gate Tunnel Project is turning vacant industrial land into a new park for the community at New Street on the border of South Kingsville and Altona North. This is one of four new parks the project will create.

Solve it HOMMUS Ingredients 400g can chickpeas 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 lemon, juiced 3 tbsp tahini

1 tbsp olive oil, plus a splash of extra virgin on top to serve Salt and black pepper, to taste 1 tsp ground cumin (optional)

Method 1. Drain chickpeas and reserve the liquid. Put all the ingredients, except salt, pepper, ground cumin and saved liquid, in a food processor and whiz for about 30 seconds or until smooth. 2. Add a little of the reserved chickpea liquid to achieve the perfect consistency. The mixture should be creamy, not wet. 3. Season to taste and add ground cumin (optional). For extra flavour you can experiment with different flavours such as dried chilli, extra garlic or ground coriander. 4. To serve, drizzle with a little extra olive oil and garnish with chopped fresh coriander leaves or continental parsley or paprika. Serve with vegie sticks, pita crisps or biscuits.

SPORT Eagles get to work By Tara Murray Eynesbury Eagles are on track for the upcoming Gisborne and District Cricket Association Jensen Shield season. With COVID-19 restriction announcements last week the Eagles, and the rest of the metro clubs in the GDCA, were given the go ahead to train and prepare for a season start date of November 21. Eagles captain-coach Tristian Francis said the uncertainty over restrictions meant a lot of things had been up in the air. “It’s good news, but now we’ve got to understand what the procedures are. The GDCA has released a statement on how the season might play out and we’ll go from there.” Francis said there had been a fair bit of interest to play at the club this season and they would field an extra team. He said with no football played this year, many were keen to have a hit. “We’ve put in that extra side, a one-day side,” he said. “A few of the footy guys are a lot more keen and they want to get around everyone and in that team spirit. “I wouldn’t be surprised if a few more come out of the woodwork with the season confirmed to go ahead.” Francis said they had lost a couple of their young stars who were looking to test themselves at the next level. With those three stepping up, it gives some more youngsters an opportunity. “Cam Davis won the MVP in the twos last season as a 14-year-old and he was the club’s Flying young Eagle, so hopefully he will be able to play up,” Francis said. “Cody McLaughlin just turned 15 and will play a big part of the season ahead.” Despite claiming the Jensen Shield premiership last season, after being the highest ranked side entering the grand final, which was cancelled due to COVID-19, the Eagles haven’t been promoted. Francis said the club had wanted to stay in the same grade, having struggled in the higher grade in the 2018-19 season. “We’re staying there and we are basically in the same grades as last year,” he said. “We thought we were quite fortunate to end up in the position we were in. “We gave ourselves a great opportunity after winning the semi-final and it put us in the driver’s seat [to claim the premiership]. “Was Diggers Rest the best side all year? Yes. Were we in the right spot at the right time, the answer was yes.” Francis said when COVID restrictions allowed, they would look to celebrate the premiership. “The question has been asked a few times,” he said. “We’ll do that when we’re allowed.”

‘Stronger’ Spotswood side ready for a challenge Spotswood president John Wheeler expects the side’s Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 1 team to be stronger than last season. The side which played finals in division 1 west last season has kept the core group of players together, led by playing coach Dan Schuppan and captain Mac Short. Wheeler said the younger players in the side, having had an extra 12 months under their belts, would form the basis of their improvement. Just one player from last season’s team, Cory Jacobs isn’t returning. Coming into the side is Gisborne premiership-winning captain Jarryd Vernon. Vernon has been one of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s best players in recent years as a top order bat and spin bowler. Wheeler said that Vernon’s leadership would also be important for the side. “He was the Gisborne captain and he’s a really good bat,” he said.

“Plus he bowls a little. “Dan has coached him before and was rapt that we spoke to him. He’s also played with Jakson Knight at Gisborne. “Jarryd brings that experience and we’ve got some young kids in the side … Mac is only 21 so that helps with the leadership as well.” Vernon already has a couple of games under his belt, having played with his former team the past few weeks. Gisborne is able to play competition as it is in a regional area. The VTCA is scheduled to kick off on November 21. Spotswood will face Craigieburn in the opening round. The competition this season will be all one-dayers with a best of three game grand final series. The division 1 competition has the best teams of division 1 west and north from last season join together in one division. Wheeler said they were looking forward to the challenge.

“It should be good,” he said. “You always want to play the best cricket you can.” Wheeler said they were hoping to hit the training track this week after restrictions had eased last week. He said they had to get a few things in place before they could start training. “We still have to get permits for it to work,” he said. “From tomorrow [last Wednesday] we’ll be getting groups to get the practice nets up and going. “Because we are doing work at the ground there’s no clubrooms at the moment either and there’s no synthetic nets either. “Our ground is in fantastic condition and as good as in the competition. When the facilities are done they will be up there with the best of them.” Jarryd Vernon has joined Spotswood. (Shawn Smits)

Honey’s sweet success By Tara Murray Melbourne Vixens midcourter Tayla Honey experienced mixed emotions on the way to being part of the club’s Super Suncorp Netball Championship. Returning from an achilles injury which forced her to miss last season, Honey was unsure whether she would get to play netball at all this season due to COVID-19. The season eventually did get under way in a hub in Queensland, where Honey made her official debut for the Vixens. She and the Vixens went on to win the grand final against the West Coast Fever. Honey, who grew up Keilor Downs, said those early days when there was some uncertainty over the season were stressful. “I honestly felt physically sick,” she said. “It was very, very scary at times at the start of the year … obviously not knowing if we would have a season and, knowing what happened last year with my injury, it was very panicked. “It wasn’t ideal circumstances at all and the fact that I might not have been able to play any netball at all again, even though I was physically capable, that was going to make it harder.” Honey said when they were told they were going into a hub, she had no hesitation in entering it. The move up north would come just five weeks after Honey moved into a house with fellow Vixens Kate Eddy and Sacha McDonald. As well as her new housemates in the hub, Honey was lucky enough to have her mum, Melbourne Vixens assistant coach Di Honey up there as well. “It was so good to have mum up there,” Honey said. “Obviously the hub experience was hard at times and the fact that I had her to turn to was amazing. “I’m really grateful, but I did feel bad at some points, all the girls missing their families and I was pretty lucky.” A third member of the Honey family was also in Queensland in a hub – brother Josh Honey, who plays for AFL club Carlton. The two siblings didn’t manage to catch up with each other. For Honey, this season was about learning as much as possible and soaking everything in. Sitting behind Australian Diamond Liz Watson at wing attack, Honey wasn’t expecting much court time. She was thrilled when she stepped on court in round two to make her official debut. “When [coach] Simone [McKinnis] said to me to get ready to go on, it was just a surreal moment,” she said. “To know all the work that I did in the previous year had been to some benefit and it was a great feeling to get up there.” Honey started a couple of games late in the

season with Watson out injured. She didn’t get on the court in the finals, but was part of the action on the sidelines. “It was really nerve wracking, especially the grand final, especially with it being so close. I had absolute faith in the girls that they would bring it home.” Honey and the Vixens spent a couple of days

celebrating in Queensland before all starting to come back home. Next for her is ensuring that her fitness remains high. Honey remains uncontracted. “I want to keep my fitness … and do some different sort of training in the off season. “I like to do longer runs, which we don’t do in the season which is exciting for me.”

Cats ready for new season Hoppers Crossing is working hard behind the scenes ahead of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west season. With COVID-19 restrictions easing last week, the Cats returned to the training track ahead of a scheduled season start on November 21. Speaking a couple of days after the announcement that training could start, Cats president Jake Porter said it was a stressful time. “There’s lots to do and not enough time to do it,“ he said. “It’s great news that we can train again. We’re planning to start training in the next couple of days for the seniors, or at least do a walk-through about the COVID protocols and then get fully into training next week. “The juniors will start next week too.” Porter said they would look to field the same number of teams this year, which includes a senior women’s and veteran’s team. He said their men’s first XI side was similar to last season. “A couple of players have stepped away for family reasons,” he said. “Jermey Swan has come back to the club after a couple of years away and we’ve had a couple of people who have expressed interest in playing. We haven’t been able to have a look at them yet. “Hopefully we’ll have a few guys putting pressure on the first XI.” Jack Rhodes has been named captain-coach of the side this season. Rhodes was appointed to the role last season, but stood down before the season started. “Jack has a lot of experience at district level [premier] and has been at the club the last couple of seasons,” he said. “Getting down to the nitty gritty last season, he knew it was a great deal of work and the timing wasn’t right for him. “He still played last season and things have changed to allow him to coach. We’ve got a bit more coaching support around him as well.” The Cats finished the past season in seventh, missing finals on percentage. Porter said there was plenty of motivation to break into that top six. “We lost one of our own early in the season and the guys battled through the season,” he said. “A lot of guys were emotionally drained at the end. “They are motivated to take that next step.” The Cats will kick off their season on November 21 against Melton.
