Sculptures bring joy Acclaimed western suburbs artist Felipe Reynolds is known for designing giant inflatables around the world such as the bear mascot for the Sochi Olympics and for the world premiere of King Kong the musical. Now, he has taken up residency at Seaworks, making inflatables that can be seen from the street to give people hope and joy during the COVID-19 lockdown. One is Puck, a six-metre high baby dinosaur inspired by world-renowned artist Takashi Murakami and Japanese toy design. “The inflatables which are on display here at Seaworks, I’ve arranged them with Halloween in mind so that’s why it’s got a bit of a ghoulish theme in the window,” Felipe said. “I’ve faced them towards the window … even at night-time, they’re illuminated so people can come by and have their own interaction while social distancing. “I think hope is what’s needed and making things possible and keeping your hopes and imaginations alive was really important to get through [lockdown].” Goya Dmytryshchak

Road out of covid ‘paused’ By Jessica Micallef Premier Daniel Andrews has delayed his highly anticipated announcement about Melbourne’s next step out of lockdown. Mr Andrews on Sunday said he was taking a “cautious pause” and wanted to see the results of more than 1000 tests connected to a northern suburbs outbreak before easing further restrictions. He said it “was not safe” to make any announcements on Sunday, but he hoped to do so this week.
“I know plenty of people were looking forward to some good news. And soon, very soon, we will have some,” Mr Andrews said. “The results may tell us that there are a handful of extra cases, they are all linked and we have the thing wrapped up. “If that is the case, then we can make detailed announcements about the next steps and we will be able to take those steps. “It would have been irresponsible today [Sunday] to stand up and say ‘there are so many tests that we do not have results for but I reckon
we should wing it’.” It was expected retail and hospitality businesses would be able to reopen from Wednesday. “This is not anything other than a cautious pause. This is not a setback,” Mr Andrews said. On Sunday, the Premier announced further easing of restrictions for regional Victoria. From tomorrow, Macedon Ranges indoor gyms and fitness spaces can reopen with a 10 person limit per space or class and a maximum of 20 patrons per venue. Non-contact indoor sport can resume for
children under 18 and indoor pools can reopen to all age groups with no more than 20 people on site. Up to 50 people can attend outdoor religious gatherings and funerals, while indoor services are capped at 20. Grade 6 and year 12 graduations can go ahead within the school community, food courts can reopen and live music can begin for outdoor hospitality. As of Sunday night, Hume had the highest number of active COVID-19 cases in the state with 17, while the Macedon Ranges had none.

Primary school expansion funded St Ambrose Parish Primary School pupils can look forward to new “first class” facilities. The school has received $3.2 million as part of the state government’s Non-Government School Capital Fund to upgrade and expand schools. The money will be used to update the existing facilities at the school, increase the learning areas to respond to growing student numbers, address accessibility issues and provide a welcoming entry to the school. Principal Bronwyn Phillips welcomed the “exciting news”.
“This money has come at a time where it is needed to build further classrooms to cater for increasing enrolments, as well as make our learning areas more contemporary and flexible,” she said. “We also need this money to enable us to make our campus inclusive for all. We can now have wheelchair access built in, as well as amenities upgraded to cater for everyone.” The successful schools to receive funding can start their projects within the next six months. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said 56 projects funded under the Non-Government
Schools Capital Fund Program will create close to 800 jobs in construction. “This is a really exciting project for the entire St Ambrose school community and it will give our students the opportunity to learn in first-class facilities,” she said. “Not only is this investment at St Ambrose and other Catholic and independent schools vital to Victoria’s economic recovery, but it will continue building the education state right here in the Macedon Ranges.” Jessica Micallef

$5m college upgrade By Jessica Micallef A long-awaited science and design learning centre is a step closer to reality at Salesian College Sunbury. The college has received $5 million as part of the state government’s Non-Government Schools Capital Fund to build a new food technology, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and design manufacturing learning centre. Salesian College Sunbury principal Mark Brockhus said he was looking forward to turning his vision into a reality. “Salesian College Sunbury has wanted these
facilities for a long time and to have this vision come to life, is truly exciting for our community. “We are delighted to move forward with plans for these new modern educational facilities within the food technology, STEM and design manufacturing centre. “The $5 million will enable Salesian College Sunbury to transform our older facilities into something truly amazing. It will meet our enrolment demands and interest in the fields of food technology, STEM and design manufacturing.” A purpose-built food technology centre with two laboratories, each equipped for 28 children, with specialist equipment and association food
preparation, storage and staff facility will be built. “We will refurbish the heritage-listed Battery Building for a flexible learning space focused on STEM to blend technology with the skill of making and testing,” Mr Brockhus said. “The refurbishment of our 1950s woodwork room will provide safe, best practice work environment for students to combine design, new technology with a range or materials. “Funding will also be used to landscape, provide better disabled access and services connections to upgrade the design manufacturing learning precinct.” Stage one is expected to begin next year.
Two Macedon Ranges organisations are celebrating Children’s Week with community grants. Cobaw Community Health and Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House have received a state government grant of up to $1000 to host activities for children and their families during the annual week-long festivities. Cobaw Community Heath will host a COVID-Safe outdoor scavenger hunt on October 28 from 9.30am-12.30pm. Families can visit Cobaw Community Health, at 49 Forest Street, Woodend, to collect a map to begin the hunt. Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House will be celebrating Children’s Week online with yoga, art, cooking, storytime and dance sessions. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the Children’s Week grants can go towards organisations to host online art exhibitions, outdoor or messy play activities, dance workshops, arts and crafts, musical and story-telling performances, drawing competitions and picnics. She said grant recipients were creating innovative ways to safely host events for the community, in line with coronavirus restrictions in the area. “Cobaw Community Health and Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House have embraced the challenge to think creatively about how to host activities and events safely to engage children and their communities,” she said. “This Children’s Week will have to look a little different than normal, but it will still be a great celebration for families to enjoy together.” Children’s Week runs until November 1. I was so excited to see her again and when I could, that first visit was horrible. “She was a completely different person. She was angry and quite agitated. She’s a lot better now but after that first visit, I came out in tears.” Now, Jo has set herself a challenge to walk 100 kilometres around Kyneton as part of The Stroke Foundation’s Stride4Sroke fundraising event next month. She is also hoping to raise $2000 for the foundation. “Mum was quite active, she would walk her little dog almost every day and I used to joke and say she was fitter than me,” she said. “I’m probably at a higher risk of having a stroke because mum had one so I need to get out there and be active. “I don’t think people think about having a stroke because they think it won’t happen to them.” To donate: bit.ly/31rAhHv
Melton Christian College is set to expand it’s school community into Toolern Vale. The college will receive $5 million as part of the state government’s Non-Government Schools Capital Fund to build a new campus on Coburns Road, Toolern Vale. The new campus is expected to have learning areas, specialist rooms, an administration area, gymnasium and associated external and internal infrastructure. New buildings will be located on site, navigated by pathways and passive areas, student security measures and car parks with roadways coming in from entry points and serving each learning area. The Toolern Vale site will be the school’s second campus. It also has a prep to year 12 campus in Brookefield. College principal David Gleeson said he was grateful for the state government funding. “The news of this funding is wonderful for the whole community of Melton Christian College – parents, staff and most important, students both current and future,” he said. The funding was announced by Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas and Melton MP Steve McGhie last week. Doctors join training program Four Northern Hospital medical officers have been accepted into the prestigious Royal Australian New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) training program. Those successful are Dr Brittany Green, Dr Hemma Valluvan, Dr Daniel McLean and Dr Michael Jones. RANZCOG trains and accredits doctors in the specialties of obstetrics and gynaecology, providing the highest standards of health care. It’s a six-year specialist program with only 25 doctors per year selected from just seven hospitals across Victoria. Tara Murray

Kyneton’s Jo Hudgson is stepping up to raise money for the Stroke Foundation. In February, Jo’s mum Maureen Green suffered a stroke that caused her to lose 75 per cent of the right-hand side of her brain. Jo was visiting her mum when Maureen said she wasn’t feeling well. “She was a bit wobbly and at the time, she had blood running down her arm,” Jo said. “As I took a step towards her to help her sit down, she lost her balance, fell back and hit her head on the cupboard. I straight away called triple-0. “She was unresponsive and I had to do compressions because she was not breathing. I only had been in the house for two minutes.” Maureen was transported to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where doctors confirmed she had a stroke on the righ side of her brain.
“She had damage to 75 per cent of her right side of the brain and she has memory loss. “She lives in the past now. You’ll ask her what she has been doing and she’ll say she was sitting on the veranda with her mum and dad who died 45 years ago … there is quite a bit of memory loss and confusion,” Jo said. After spending two weeks at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Maureen was transported to a geriatric evaluation and management facility before she was transferred to the Kyneton Hospital. Maureen requires 24-7 care and is bed and chair-bound. She is currently living at Bupa Aged Care in Kyneton. Jo said when Maureen was transferred to the aged care strict COVID-19 restrictions were in place so she wasn’t able to see her mum for six weeks. “It was really hard,” she said. “We did video chats but it’s not the same.

Stranger’s kindness helps family By Tara Murray Travis McCarty is walking 100 kilometres over 24 hours to help a family he doesn’t know. The father of four was so struck by a news item about the Woronka family he decided to do something to help them. Seven-year-old twins Riley and Cooper, along with their two-year-old brother Logan, have all been diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a rare and progressive muscle-wasting condition which has no cure. It’s likely all will need wheelchairs by the time they are 12. Mr McCarty, said the story really stuck with him. “It was a really moving thing,” he said. “I saw it on the news and I wanted to do something. I sat there for a bit and the first thing I did was donate to their GoFundMe page to help them buy a big van. “I felt like we could do something more and in the end I decided to do that walk.” Mr McCarty, who had never met the family, messaged them to see whether they were happy with him doing a fundraising walk. He said Bekk Woronka was ’stoked’ that a stranger would do that for the family. The family have set up their own fundraising page, firstly to buy a van to fit three wheelchairs and then for a house deposit. Mr McCarty will walk from Craigieburn to Point Cook, where the Woronka family lives, on December 12. He will be joined by three friends, including his boss and Sunbury Cricket Club coach Scott Yardley, and colleague JD Houston, who will walk 100 kilometres between them. The walk will start in Craigieburn and go through Thomastown, Epping North, Altona

Gisborne and Kyneton police responded to a triple-0 call regarding a male acting suspicious in High Street, Woodend on October 12, about 3.30am. Upon arrival, a 30-year-old St Kilda man was found to be in possession of stolen items. The man was charged with burglary, theft and breaching bail conditions. He appeared at the Kyneton Magistrates Court on the same day and was remanded in custody.

Owners urged to be fire-ready By Jessica Micallef Macedon Ranges residents are urged to start preparing now for the upcoming fire season. Fire and rescue agencies have started their preparations under a COVIDSafe plan to ensure burns and fuel reduction activity can be conducted safely, and residents in fire-prone areas are encouraged to do the same. Although metropolitan Melburnians cannot travel into regional Victoria for leisure due to lockdown restrictions, Sunbury residents can now travel to their second property
or home in regional Victoria to undertake fire preparedness activities ahead of the fire season. Written formal approval is required from the council where the second property is located. Sunbury residents will need to provide the relevant council with details about the property, the type of work needed to be undertaken and the date of travel. Macedon Ranges residents can continue to travel to a second property, holiday home or business within regional Victoria to prepare it for an emergency.
Councils will also continue to issue fire prevention notices were it is deemed necessary to place an obligation on property owners to legally travel to a property to clean it up. Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp said that in the lead-up to the summer season, CFA brigades and Fire Rescue Victoria across the state will be running fire safety essentials online sessions to help residents prepare for fire risk. “Significant planning has been under way for some time across the sector to prepare not only for the potential of fire, but also for the
potential for floods and other emergencies,” he said. “This is an important reminder for all Victorians to know where to go for emergency information and how you and your family can stay safe this summer.” Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville said now was the time for residents to increase their understanding of the fire risk in their area. “Prepare your property, talk to your loved ones about what you’ll do to stay safe from fire,” she said.
Water plant upgraded The Gisborne Recycled Water Plant is set for a “major” upgrade. As part of Western Water’s investment into the region, the Gisborne plant will be upgraded to manage an increasing volume of sewage. Western Water’s chief operating officer Graham Holt said the Gisborne plant has been an essential community asset, treating local sewage since it was constructed in the early 1980s. He said despite several upgrades over the years, population growth meant the plant was nearing capacity. “The planned major upgrade will not only meet the region’s increasing demand for sewage treatment, but also improve the quality of the Class B recycled water produced and significantly reduce the plant’s energy consumption,” he said. The Gisborne plant receives sewage from customers in Gisborne, New Gisborne, Mount
Macedon and Macedon, treating an average of close to two million litres per day. Sewage is treated to become Class B recycled water which is used to irrigate green spaces, as well as crops in the Gisborne South agriculture precinct. Recycled water not locally used is released into Jacksons Creek. “As we upgrade the plant and plan for the future, Western Water wants to ensure we deliver the best outcomes for the community and environment,” Mr Holt said. Councils unite to help ‘abandoned’ By Goya Dmytryshchak Hum, Whittlesea and Hobsons Bay are among 14 Australian councils to sign a declaration to provide financial or in-kind support to asylum seekers, international students and others unable to access federal government income support during the COVID-19 pandemic. Racial and economic justice organisations, Democracy in Colour and Welcoming Australia, say two million people have been “abandoned”. The 14 councils which have signed a mayoral declaration also include Hobart, Fremantle,

mayoral declaration are taking a stand with us and saying that it’s time all workers, regardless of visa status, are protected and taken care of during this pandemic,” she said “The economic impacts of this pandemic have hit us all in ways that we might not have been prepared for, but we’re seeing now that migrants, international students, people seeking asylum and refugees have been left out of any income support from the federal government. “The more councils that we have signed onto the pledge, the stronger our message to the Morrison government is.”
Welcoming Australia chief executive Aleem Ali said more councils were being urged to sign the pledge to demonstrate support for vulnerable people. “People have been left without a safety net and are relying on the goodwill of local councils, state governments, community organisations and generous individuals to continue to pay their rent and put food on their table,” he said. “Many local councils are standing in the gap for recently arrived migrants, refugees and people seeking asylum because they value communities where people of all backgrounds can belong, contribute and thrive.”

Mental health boost for students More secondary school students in Macedon will have access to school-based mental health support. The state government’s $51.2 million Mental Health Practitioners in Government Secondary Schools initiative provides funding to schools to recruit mental health practitioners including psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists and mental health nurses While schools in the Loddon Mallee region, including Gisborne Secondary and Kyneton Secondary colleges, have already received funding for school-based mental health
practitioners, the roll-out of the program across the state has been brought forward and is expected to be competed by the end of 2021. All government secondary schools will receive between one and five days a week of support from a practitioner. Mental health practitioner at Gisborne Secondary College Allison Hicks said it was more important than ever to provide students with the right support, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. “It is really important that we can help young people to move through this challenging time
and to help them build resilience, which is going to help them as they get older where we do come across unexpected situations,” she said. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the program would help young people experiencing mental health challenges access the support they need, when they need it. “Mental health is one of the biggest issues raised with me when I talk to young people, parents and carers across Macedon, which is why this initiative is so important,” she said.
Recent wet weather has “significantly” reduced the available storage capacity at the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant as part of the Kyneton Solutions Project, according to Coliban Water. The water company’s managing director Damian Wells said the Bureau of Meteorology has forecast wetter conditions over the next few months due to the current La Nina weather event. “The recent rainfall has caused a sharp increase in lagoon levels at the water reclamation plant,” he said. “Last week, 55 millimetres of rain fell in the region over two days, resulting in inflows to the plant which increase lagoon volume from 85 to 95 per cent. “Typical inflows to the plant average two megalitres per day and last week we experienced a day in which plant inflows exceeded 11 megalitres.” Phase one works of the project were completed in March, and work is underway on phase two, which includes the construction of an additional 200 megalitres storage lagoon at the plant. “We had planned this would be completed by December, however … with more wet weather forecast until phase two is completed early in the new year, we will need to release additional Class B recycled water into the Campaspe River,” Mr Wells said. “We are planning to release around four megalitres of Class B recycled water per day … and around eight truckloads a day will transport 200 kilolitres of treated water per day to help create lagoon storage at the plant. “We are doing everything possible to remain compliant with our licence.” Jessica Micallef

Free transport during COVID-19 crisis Throughout the COVID-19 crisis in Victoria, St John Ambulance has been providing free transport for the more vulnerable. Lesley Musial, 75, is one of the beneficiaries of the service. She has been driven by volunteers to be tested for the coronavirus three times. If she hadn’t been transported by a St John community transport vehicle, she said she would have taken the bus. Ms Musial said she had been tested due to being in touch with a close contact, by a doctor’s referral after losing her sense of smell and after experiencing a sore throat. “I rang up the Altona North Medical Group to make an appointment and they said, ’How
will you get here?’ “I said, ‘Hmm, bus’. “They said, ‘We’ll send a St John’s car,’ which was lovely. “It was just lovely as an older person. “I’m quite capable of going on buses and things but if you think you might be a bit infectious, you don’t take buses.” Nearly 1500 people have been transported by St John to get tested, which equates to more than 20,000 kilometres travelled. Each patient is taken by a trained volunteer wearing personal protective equipment. All vehicles have a Defibrillators in case of an emergency. St John event health services general

LEMON RIND BISCUITS Ingredients 150g butter 1 3/4 cups caster sugar 3 eggs 1 tsp vanilla essence
Grated rind of 1 lemon 300ml sour cream 5 cups self raising flour 2 cups icing sugar
Method 1. Cream butter and caster sugar using electric beater. 2. Add eggs, vanilla essence, lemon rind and beat until mixture is fluffy. 3. Add sour cream and mix well. 4. Fold in self raising flour (use hands to mix). 5. Leave in an airtight container in fridge overnight. 6. Next day: Preheat oven to 160 degrees. 7. Roll mixture into balls. 8. Roll each ball in icing sugar and place on a tray lined with baking paper. Add an extra sprinkle of icing sugar to the top. 9. Bake for 10 minutes or until biscuits start to brown on top. 10. Let biscuits cool and enjoy!

KINETIC SAND Ingredients 5 cups of sand 1.2 cups of corn flour 1/2 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid 1 cup of water (approx.) 1 teaspoon tea tree oil (optional)
Method 1. Put 5 cups of play sand in a container. 1. Add 1.2 cups of corn flour and mix. 2. Mix 3/4 a cup of water with 1/2 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid and mix through. Add tea tree oil if using (tea tree is antibacterial and will keep it smelling fresh and lasting longer). 3. If mixture is too dry, add 1/4 cup water. SPORT Hillier bolsters Wyndham’s coaching panel The lure of working at a big association was behind Gerard Hillier’s move to the Wyndham Basketball Association. Hillier is a successful coach at a number of different levels and has worked with both Basketball Victoria and in club land. He joins Wyndham as its new player and coach development manager. Hillier said it was exciting to join a club such as Wyndham. “It’s a big club and big growth area which has a lot of good pathways and good programs already,” he said. “I grew up in Yarraville so I’m a western suburbs boy. I was at Southern Pen for the last 10 years. “Southern Pen is a small club, I wanted to look for a bigger club. Wyndham is in that growth corridor and there’s so many options.”
Hillier, who was the Sharks director of coaching and pathways, coached just about every level of basketball at Southern Peninsula, He also was Australian head coach for the 3X3 team for the Youth Olympics. Hillier replaces Reece Potter in the role, with Potter moving back to Sydney. With the two men sharing a friendship, Hillier already has plenty of knowledge of the Wyndham program. “Reece and I worked side-by-side and mentored each other with our programs and everything at club land. “I’ve got a good grip on the program and we’re well positioned to move forward again.” Hillier, who started the role last week, said while the focus would be on helping further develop all their programs, the first step was a simple one.
“After COVID-19 the immediate challenge is getting all young players and senior domestic players back playing again. “Obviously this has been an extremely challenging time for everyone in our sport, but it has been heartening to see players and coaches continue to commit to improvement through online sessions. “I would love to talk about championships and winning things, but getting local players back playing basketball again is the most important thing.” He said there would be some junior players move into the Big V program next season. “We not only want to be a big program, but a program filled with locals,” he said. “We want to bring a few junior players into the program to help develop them and for the longevity of the program.”
Late coaching change By Tara Murray Altona has had a last minute coaching change ahead of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west season, with Shane Jones moving to Queensland. Jones was appointed the club’s coach for this season earlier this year having returned from premier club Footscray. But a job opportunity in Queensland has meant he can’t continue on in the role. The club announced last Saturday that James Grubb, who was set to be an assistant coach this season, will step up into the coaching role. A’s president Darren McConville said it was disappointing to lose Jones, who previously played at the club. “Shane got the promotion and they asked him to move to Queensland to run the office up there. “It’s a good opportunity for him and the family to relocate.” McConville said it was an easy decision to appoint Grubb as coach. Grubb returned to the club last season after spending time at premier club Footscray. McConville said COVID-19 meant it was difficult to look at external coaches without getting them into the club and being so close to the start of the season. Lsst season Grubb averaged more than 50 with the bat, making more than 800 runs for the season, the second most in the division. He also took 26 wickets to be in the top 10 as well as being one of the standout players of the competition for the season. “James is more than capable,” McConville said. “He was doing a lot of the pre-planning with Shane anyway, so it won’t be a massive jump in learning for him.” McConville said they had managed to keep most of last season’s playing group together heading into this season. The A’s made the semi-finals last season, losing to Williamstown, which was crowned premiers for finishing on top of the ladder after the grand final didn’t go ahead. In a bonus for the A’s, Josh Young returns from Willy Imps. McConville said the club was looking to use the semi-final appearance as a base to go at least one step further this season. The A’s are scheduled to start their season on November 21 against Yarraville. The season will be all one-dayers due to COVID-19. McConville said they would be ready to start training once they were given the go ahead. It’s expected that clubs will have clearer timeframes in the next week or so. “We’ve had a lot of help from the VSDCA, Cricket Victoria and council,” he said.
The Devils are starting to put their rosters in place for next season. Boomers legend John Dorge is back as men’s coach, while the club is set to announce a new women’s coach in the coming weeks. Potter, who had a dual role at the club, was also coach of the women’s side. Hillier said he would likely do some coaching at the club as well. WBA general manager Craig Armstead said Hillier would be a terrific asset for the association. “Gerard’s resume speaks for itself, with experience across all levels of basketball, and his commitment to improvement during his time at Southern Peninsula really stood out for the WBA executive,” Armstead said. Lakers ready to pounce Caroline Springs believes it’s in a good position for a finals tilt in Western Region Football League division 1. Having improved every year in the top flight, the Lakers were hoping for a finals berth in 2020 before COVID-19 hit. Lakers football director Marc Raak said with the majority of their list signing on and a few new recruits, they were happy with how things were going. Brodie Holland will again lead the side after re-signing as coach. “We were in a really good position, thinking that the season was going to go ahead,” Raak said. “We had 50-odd on the training track and we were a bit devastated that it didn’t go ahead. “We spoke as a club and set goals for this year to get into a finals game for the first time in div 1. The players and coaching staff are driven.” Raak said they had lost just one player from this year’s squad, which was due to business commitments in Mildura. Their new signings for 2020 have re-signed for next year, led by former Adelaide-listed player Will Young. The Lakers have announced their first new signing for 2021, with ruckman Brock McGregor joining the club. McGregor had been playing with Essendon District Football League premier division side Keilor. He missed last year’s premiership after injuring his knee. “He is a ruck and it was a hole that we needed to fill,” Raak said. “We spoke with him a while ago about giving him an opportunity. What we are looking for suited us both and he’s looking to move into the Caroline Springs area and be part of our community.” Raak said they were delighted with where the list was sitting at the moment. He said they were still talking to players. “There’s one or two others we would like to add to our list as well. “We’ll look to improve in one or two other areas.” Like all clubs, the Lakers are unsure when they will be able to start pre-season training due to COVID-19 restrictions. Raak said they would look to start as soon as they were allowed. “We’re just waiting for clarification,” he said. “When we’re allowed, we will be out there on that day we’re allowed.” Tara Murray

Seidel appointed Melton Thoroughbreds coach Andrew Seidel is returning to the coaching hot seat after being appointed Melton Thoroughbreds’ Big V women’s coach for next year’s division 2 season. Seidel coached the Sunbury Jets youth league girls team to back-to-back championships in 2017-18, but was not reappointed to lead the side in the Youth League Championships division for the first time. After two years out of coaching, Seidel decided he wanted back in and successfully applied for the Melton women’s role. Seidel said the COVID-19 break, which resulted in limited basketball this year, had played a role in getting him back into basketball. “Unfortunately I wasn’t reappointed after two championships at Sunbury and I had to walk away from coaching as there wasn’t any jobs,” he said. “I’ve had the passion and the bite to coach again the last month or two. I applied for a couple of jobs and got this one.
“During COVID I missed basketball.” Seidel has just built a house in the Melton municipality, which played a factor in applying for the role. He replaces Lauren Olcorn, who stood down as coach. Olcorn was instrumental in getting the women’s Big V program back up and running in Melton. The side was reestablished in 2018 after folding at the end of 2010. “Lauren stepped away due to some family commitments and decided to not go on with the role,” Seidel said. “I want to see if we can develop the side even further and get it up into division 1.” Seidel said he knew a couple of players from this year’s squad, having previously coached them at Sunbury. He said he would look to recruit a few players to help strength the side. The club has also announced Adrian Adams as the youth league women’s coach. The club was due to have a yough league girls team for
the first time this year, before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. Seidel said it was exciting to see the pathway being established at the club. “I’ve had experience coaching youth league and getting a pathway and somewhere to move up to, gives them a bit more incentive. “Hopefully they’ll stay around and play women’s.” Seidel said he can’t wait to get things underway. “I’m excited,” he said. “I’m someone with fresh ideas and new to the club. “Hopefully the club is heading in the right direction and I’m extremely excited about this new opportunity.” Tara Murray Andrew Seidel is back in the coching hot seat. Second win for Dragons By Tara Murray It’s been a juggling act for Gisborne as it returned to the nets and field in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association. As a regional club, the Dragons are allowed to train in groups of set numbers. Regional teams in the GDCA are also playing against each other in a round robin competition until the metro teams are allowed to play. New McIntyre Cup captain Jason Wilson said it had been good to be back. “We’re getting about 70-odd people to training,” he said. “It’s good to have a run around with some mates and be back out there after six months. “It’s challenging organising it all and we have to do it over a couple of different ovals and there’s a few different team leaders.” Among those training with the Dragons are several Gisborne-based cricketers who are playing in Melbourne competitions. All have played for the Dragons at some point in their careers.
Several of them, including premier cricket players Lachie McKenna and Roby Lane, last season’s captain Jarryd Vernon and Luke Macumber, all played in the Dragons opening round matches. “It’s great having their knowledge and leadership around with them all playing at a high level of cricket,” Wilson said. “It’s good to see them pass on the knowledge to the younger players, as we have a lot of them. “I’m just trying to balance that on the field as we have plenty of depth with those guys playing. “I do have to manage everyone on the field and give everyone a hit and rotate the batting.” Another player who has started the season with the Dragons is former Australian under-19 captain Pat McKenna. McKenna, who spent time on Greater Western Sydney and Melbourne’s AFL lists, hasn’t played a lot of cricket in recent years. He played two games last season for the Dragons. Wilson said McKenna would play with them until Christmas but is unsure of his
availability after the break because of work commitments. Wilson, who captained his home club back in Gippsland for a number of years, said he was enjoying the opportunity to step up and captain the Dragons. On Friday, the Dragons faced Woodend in the second of its regional senior competition pool matches and made it two from two. Woodend made 9-83 from its overs, with former Dragon Riley Vernon top scoring with 40. Roby Lane took two wickets. The Dragons made the runs two wickets down and with five overs remaining. Sam Mackay top-scored with 40 not out. Making the most of the public holiday proved a successful move with rain resulting in few other matches being completed. Just three other senior matches achieved results over Friday and Saturday. In Pool B, Bacchus Marsh 2 was too good for Riddell. The other pool A match featuring the McIntyre Cup teams, Romsey and Bacchus Marsh didn’t go ahead.
Glen Marr has held many coaching roles at Taylors Lakes Cricket Club. He’s coached junior sides and, for the past three seasons, has been the batting coach for the senior Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association side. This season he has taken on the senior coaching role, replacing Janaka Deegodagamage who has left the club to coach at a higher level. Marr said he just loved cricket and being involved. “For me, I’m just happy to do anything,” he said. “I’ve been on and off at the club for 20 years and my sons play here. “I’ve been helping out in the past and I’m not working any more, so I have more time to put into it. “I just love the game and the enjoyment for me is seeing them all improve.” Marr already knows most of the playing group and has played with several of the junior players coming through. He said the club had kept most of last year’s side together, but travel restrictions meant they would be without international players – Aamir Raza was meant to be an assistant coach while playing at the club for a second season. Marr said they were still settling their line-up, with COVID-19 delaying some people’s decisions about their playing future. Amhit Padwal, who played with Altona last season, will be a playing assistant coach. Marr and Padwal have already been speaking about training plans, with a likely date for a return to training nearing. The Lions last season made a qualifying final after an exciting final round of the season. Marr said the biggest focus this season was improvement. “The first thing is we will try and focus on the skills,” he said. “We won’t set any targets, it’s a funny season. “We are traditionally better in one-dayers from my experience because of our batting, but I will take it as it comes. “I’ll try and get the guys to enjoy it and better themselves. If we make good choices when in the middle, the rest will take care of itself.” The Lions are set to kick off their season on November 21, at home against Ivanhoe. Tara Murray
