Art for the soul One of Sunshine’s newest murals pays homage to the Australian African community and their contribution to Brimbank. Artist Katherine Gailer’s Flourish: Story of a Diaspora in Stark Place was created as part of council’s Creative Brimbank initiative. It has been nominated for The Global Art Awards 2020, an international award for visual arts. Gailer worked with the western suburbs African women’s group, Kontiki Cultural Women Empowerment, to ensure the mural was culturally appropriate. “My work honours the beauty of diversity, women and the connection to our natural environment,” she said. “I want to spark a light in people’s hearts.” Originally from Bogota, Colombia, Gailer moved to Melbourne more than a decade ago to study fine arts. Youth gang crackdown By Esther Lauaki More than 250 arrests have been made in the past month as part of a statewide police operation focusing on serious and violent offenders. Operation Alliance, which started in September, was established to prevent, disrupt and dismantle youth street gangs responsible for crimes such as robberies, aggravated burglaries, serious assaults, car thefts, and home invasions. Over the past month, local police worked alongside specialist units to target youth gangs across suburbs in Melbourne’s north-west, south-east and east, as well as Geelong.

Police also targeted known offenders and persons of interest in relation to serious and violent crimes. A total of 88 search warrants were executed at addresses across suburbs including Caroline Springs, Deer Park, Werribee, and North Melbourne. Police issued 24 Firearm Prohibition Orders across the state. Regional operations deputy commissioner Rick Nugent said Operation Alliance would remain focused on youth offenders engaged in networked criminal offending causing the most harm within our community. “Operation Alliance uses an integrated and co-ordinated approach to tackling youth

gangs in every region,” Deputy Commissioner Nugent said. “This sees local police working alongside specialist units – sharing real-time intelligence and information. “We anticipated Operation Alliance would be successful and that has proved to be the case early on, with multiple arrests and seizures of dangerous items, such as firearm and other weapons. “Combined with a strong focus on other serious and violent offending in the regions, this has meant there are 70 serious offenders currently sitting in cells awaiting their court date, rather than roaming our streets.” More than 720 charges have been laid as part of Operation Alliance.

The majority of offenders arrested were males aged between their mid-teens and mid-twenties. Deputy Commissioner Nugent said youth gangs weren’t solely restricted to offending in their local neighbourhood, with offenders often striking in a sequence and showing no reservations travelling … to commit further crimes. “We make no apologies for targeting the individuals who commit the most serious and violent crimes in our community.” Anyone with information about offences or gang activity is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Council services update In line with the Victorian Government’s easing of restrictions from 19 October 2020, Council has opened skate parks and public BBQ facilities in the municipality. events cancelled across Melbourne due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Shrine of Remembrance Melbourne Service in partnership with RSL Victoria and Victoria Remembers will be live-streamed on Facebook on 11 November, from 10:45am. Roadmap out of covid ‘paused’ By Esther Lauaki Brimbank residents and businesses continue to wait for more easing of COVID restrictions. Premier Daniel Andrews on Sunday dashed any hopes of reopening retail and hospitality this week because of concerns over a growing outbreak in Melbourne’s north. “I know plenty of people were looking forward to some good news today … and soon, very soon, we’ll have some,” Mr Andrews said. “But for now, we need to do again what we’ve

done throughout this pandemic: follow the advice of our public health experts. “That means there can be no changes to restrictions in Melbourne. “Put simply: this is a couple of extra days that might put us weeks ahead of this virus. “To not only get on top of this outbreak – but to stamp it out.” Mr Andrews said that it was not a step backwards, but rather to ensure that “we can take a step forward and stay there”. “We can’t let everything Victorians have

sacrificed, everything we’ve given up, simply slip away. “Until then, we’ll continue to keep a careful eye on the numbers – and the all-important stories that sit behind them.” The disappointing news comes after a single positive Brimbank case, recorded on Tuesday, was being treated as a reinfection of a person who had previously tested positive. “The person who tested positive twice, the first time back in July, he is currently regarded as a reinfection of coronavirus, so he will be

recorded as a positive case,” Mr Andrews said. “There have been very few reported cases of reinfection around the world. “It is also the case that persistent shedding over a long period of time can be a feature of this virus.” Mr Andrews said a panel of experts could not determine if the infection was old or new. “So through an abundance of caution, the assumption is that they have it for a second time.” Brimbank had just eight active cases as of Sunday.

A big bear hug for local children More than 100 hand-knitted teddy bears will make their way into the homes and hearts of children across Brimbank this week, as part of Brimbank City Council Children’s Week celebrations. Children and their teddy bears are invited to join in online activities including a virtual Teddy Bear’s Picnic. Children’s Week runs until November 1. The teddy bears have been created by local volunteers, Anastasia Tsipas, Lina Belios and Doreen Scanlon. Mrs Tsipas said the trio took on the project as a way of staying connected with their community – including younger generations.

Brimbank community wellbeing acting director Lynley Dumble said Children’s Week celebrates the right of all children to choose their friends and safely connect with others. “Staying connected has become more important – and more challenging – for all of us, including children,” Ms Dumble said. “During the pandemic, children have had to adjust to online learning and reduced time with friends, carers, teachers and other contacts in the community,” Ms Dumble said. “Our Children’s Week activities will help children and their families reconnect with new learning opportunities and their community.” Children and their families are invited to

Hoon drivers are on notice – police are on their tail. Operation Ricketier, a new operation in Caroline Springs, involves local police, the Brimbank Highway Patrol, Air Wing, Dog Squad, Mounted Branch and the Brimbank Offender Management Team. It’s in response to small groups of drivers engaging in hoon activity. Police believe the activity is linked to existing antisocial behaviour as well as robberies and burglaries in the area. In addition to the highly visible police presence, police will be using Automatic Numberplate Recognition Technology (ANPR) to gather intelligence and detect those people who shouldn’t be on the roads. Caroline Springs Acting Senior Sergeant Nick Di Mieri said whether it was organised or not, police had no tolerance for those who engage in risky behaviour such as hoon driving. “While we are not seeing a great amount of organised hoon meet-ups, we are seeing a small number of people conducting dangerous driving behaviour in a spur of the moment decision. “Not only does this put the person driving and their passengers in danger, this activity puts the entire community at greater risk of harm. “There is no place for this type of activity on our roads.” Acting Senior Sergeant Di Mieri also highlighted the community’s role in reporting any anti-social, criminal or dangerous activity to police. “The more intelligence we receive … the better opportunities police have to… respond quickly and accordingly,” he said. EPA extends landfill fire trial By Esther Lauaki

hotspot material by leaving it exposed to the air overnight. The extension was for the end of this month. Since the trial began, 56 reports of odour have been made to the EPA. Western metropolitan regional manager Stephen Lansdell said the trial could save weeks, possibly months, in the work to end problems with hotspots and the resulting odour at Kealba landfill. “We’ve really listened to our community in managing this difficult issue, and it is clear that together we want this fixed as quickly and safely as possible,” Mr Lansdell said.

Residents neighbouring Kealba landfill have complained of worse odours than usual as the operators trial a new solution to end its hotspot issues for good. Fire burning in underground chambers at the landfill has been wreaking havoc on air quality in the area for many months. The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) last week approved an extension of a month-long trial, which began in September, permitting landfill operator Barro Group to speed up the cooling of excavated

Barro Group must continue air quality monitoring and community engagement as required by an EPA-issued clean up notice. The notice also required the operator to enact a plan to prevent future hostpots, prevent leakage from the landfill, conduct comprehensive air quality monitoring and keep the community informed of its remediation strategy and air quality monitoring results. Mr Lansdell said the trial, to end on October 30, came after discussions with some of the most affected residents, most of whom told EPA that the much earlier completion time is preferable, despite the increased odour they

had experienced during the trial period. A recent EPA analysis of odour monitoring and community reports showed the increase in odour during the trial was partly attributable to the remediation works progressing into deeper, older and hotter waste typically creating more odour. Mr Lansdell said the completion date still depends on how large and hot the waste hotspots are, but the process of digging up and cooling each hotspot will now take considerably less time. Treasure hunt brings joy “Originally, we planned that the treasure hunt would take about a week but the interest from the community was so high that it only took 12 hours for all three plush toys to be found,” Mr Dalli said. “People really responded well to the hunt and it wasn’t easy either.” Mr Dalli said the initiative also helped boost support for the local restaurants and cafes that have continued operating throughout the pandemic. He said another treasure hunt is in the pipeline.

A community treasure hunt has helped residents to explore Syndenham’s hidden gems. Organiser Shaun Dalli, a longtime Sydenham resident, said he wanted to spread some joy around the community. “I’ve wanted to do this for a while,” Mr Dalli said. “My brother and I grew up in Sydenham and we know all the parks and we’ve always thought we could start a treasure hunt for people to get out and visit some of our local parks.” After securing sponsorship from three local businesses for prizes, Mr Dalli purchased three plush puppy toys which he hid in obscure locations in Pioneer Park, Stagecoach Reserve and Rosehead Reserve. Mr Dalli, with the help of his partner, created the Sydenham 3037 Facebook group, which has attracted nearly 500 members, where they posted cryptic clues for residents to follow.

Learner driver nabbed

A learner driver’s car was impounded after he was allegedly caught driving at more than four times the legal alcohol limit in St Albans. Police observed a vehicle speeding on Arthur Street about 3.45am on October 19. The 25-year-old driver was breath-tested, allegedly returning a reading of .233. His car was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $932.40. The St Albans man will also face court on a number of traffic offences including drink driving and driving while unaccompanied.

Road rage victim speaks out By Goya Dmytryshchak The victim of a vicious daylight road rage attack in Altona has spoken out after suffering a fractured jaw in the unprovoked assault. Tony Bacon, 65, said he was driving along Queen Street, towards Altona, when a car started tailgating him on October 7 shortly before 2pm. “The three cars in front of me were doing 65km/h, so I was doing 65, and he’s right up my butt – like, I’m talking two feet – and

moving backwards and forwards trying to make out like he’s trying to get around me,” Mr Bacon said. “I put my brake lights on a couple of times to try to tell him to back off, which didn’t do much.” Mr Bacon said when the vehicles got to the corner of Maidstone Street, the other car overtook him “with a dangerous manoeuvre” and “pulled up abruptly”. “I just about smashed into the back of him but I stopped probably a couple of inches off his bumper bar,” Mr Bacon said.

An altercation ensued and a male passenger got out of the other car and abused him. “When I turned my head to address him, I was king hit to the side of the head,” Mr Bacon said. “Then, when I fell onto my bonnet and I came back, he gave me an upper cut to the underside of my left jaw and I thought, ‘Oh my God’.” Mr Bacon has reported the incident to Altona police. He described the car as a 2004 Ford Falcon sedan in a dark metallic green colour. He remembers the first three letters of

the registration were IIE. He said the driver was about 193 centimetres, of slim build, Caucasian, with short black hair, clean shaven and was wearing a dark tracksuit top and dark pants. His passenger was about 160 centimetres, average build, Caucasian, with long blond wavy hair and wearing a cream-coloured T-shirt. Both offenders are believed to have been aged in their late 20s or early 30s. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 300 000.

Army joins beach patrol Summer policing at Altona and Williamstown beaches will be like no other year as the state grapples with COVID-19. Hobsons Bay Inspector Tim O’Connor said previous years had focused on ensuring a strong visible police presence. “We don’t know what this summer’s going to bring,” he said. “Obviously, we’re thinking about what the chief health officer guidelines are going to be and what impact they’re going to have on summer policing. I think it’s more moving away from that public order response to incorporate more of a public safety response.” The federal government has provided the services of the Australian Defence Force to assist police. “Hobsons Bay, or the beachfront at Williamstown and Altona, has been identified as one of those key locations where the three branches of the armed services are working side by side with Vic Pol as we patrol the foreshore areas,” Inspector O’Connor said.

The Maribyrnong River, Werribee and CBD are among other locations where armed forces are patrolling. Inspector O’Connor said there would still be a strong police presence but a balance had to be struck between public order and public safety. Earlier this month, a woman was arrested at Altona Beach in an incident widely shared on social media. S he and other members of a group were issued with infringement notices for breaching chief health officer guidelines, including failing to wear a mask and being further than five kilometres from home. Inspector O’Connor said Hobsons Bay’s beaches attracted people from across the northwest and, depending on the health guidelines, police had to ensure everyone could enjoy the amenities and operate together. Waiting game for candidates By Esther Lauaki Brimbank has voted and is awaiting the results of its council election. while there were 11 nominations for three vacancies in the Harvester ward this year – down from 19 candidates in 2016. Incumbent Brimbank councillors Victoria Borg, Duyen Anh Pham and Janev Aziz all stood again in the Grasslands ward. Deputy mayor Kin Thien Truong and fellow incumbent councillor Sam David ran again in the Harvester ward while John Hedditch bowed out due to health concerns. Keeping hope afloat Acclaimed western suburbs artist Felipe Reynolds is known for designing giant inflatables around the world, such as the bear mascot for the Sochi Olympics and for the world premiere of King Kong the musical. Now, he has taken up residency at Seaworks, making inflatables that can be seen from the street to give people hope and joy during the COVID-19 lockdown. One is Puck, a six-metre high baby dinosaur inspired by world-renowned artist Takashi Murakami and Japanese toy design. “He was originally designed for the SummerSalt Festival, which activated the arts precinct throughout Melbourne, and he was part of a suite of inflatables,” Reynolds said. “The inflatables which are on display here at Seaworks, I’ve arranged them with Halloween in mind so that’s why it’s got a bit of a ghoulish theme in the window. “I’ve faced them towards the window … even

at night-time, they’re illuminated so people can come by and have their own interaction while social distancing.” During the lockdown, Reynolds also created the ‘Messengers of Brisbane’ for the Brisbane Festival, working alongside acclaimed artist Florentijn Hofman. Their six giant gouldian finches nest around Brisbane in key festival areas. “Of course, they are under lockdown like we are but what was really good about it and the Brisbane Festival is being able to engage art and have people, even though social distancing was engaged, to be able to go and see art and basically inspire,” Reynolds said. “I think hope is what’s needed and making things possible and keeping your hopes and imaginations alive was really important to get through.” Goya Dmytryshchak

MY BRIMBANK Service to the Brimbank community runs deep in Despina Havelas’ heart – and she has dedicated more than a decade to her volunteer work. The former Citizen of the Year talks to Esther Lauaki about her latest challenge.

I have lived in the Brimbank area for over 20 years. I am very knowledgeable about our local area, particularly its need for improving services in the west. What’s your connection to community groups in the area? I have extensive experience in volunteer work, having started a non-for-profit group in 2008, Autism Angels, from this I found the importance in enhancing community connections, especially among families and individuals with disabilities. Eight years later, I was awarded Brimbank Citizen of the Year in 2016 for my community work I have done, and continue to do, in Brimbank with my husband and two adult children. You ran for council this year. Why do you think it’s important to roll up your sleeves and get involved in your community? I ran as an independent candidate for the Brimbank council elections this year because I

wanted to prioritise a shared vision in bringing change to the Brimbank municipality. I wanted to be that voice on behalf of our local residents advocating for better services for locals to enjoy. By nature, I am determined to be immersed within such diversity, and a collective environment. My motivation for wanting to serve Brimbank stems from wanting to foster community connections and employ strategies for better services and facilities for all our locals. What would you like to see improved in Brimbank? I want to see better information for our residents about what local programs there are available. Improve the mental health services locally, especially with impacts of COVID-19 on our municipality. We need to work as a team and advocate to get more funding and programs in Brimbank. We need better parks, supports for sporting clubs, community programs, health services in the west, advocate for facilities to have a carers hub, further youth mentoring programs, directories for community groups and small businesses within the Brimbank region.

Foster carers in short supply By Alesha Capone Uniting Vic.Tas says there is a “critical need” for more foster carers across the western suburbs. The organisation is calling for people and families from all walks of life to consider becoming foster carers. Uniting Vic.Tas chief executive Bronwyn Pike said there were many children and young people “who are in desperate need of short and long term care”. Uniting western metropolitan region children, youth and families services co-ordinator Sharon Tyrell said that at any time, there could be up to 11,000 children and

young people in need of foster care. “Wyndham, Brimbank and Melton have some of the highest rates of child protection involvement with children and young people,” she said. “We could get up to 10 references a day to place a child or young person at any given time.” Ms Tyrell said there was a need for more short-term, long-term, emergency and respite carers. Emergency carers usually care for a youngster overnight, or for a few nights, until a more permanent carer can be found. “We’re really in great need of emergency carers – these are people who can take a call at 2am in the morning so children aren’t sitting

at a police station for hours on end,” Ms Tyrell said. She said that not all children needing foster care have experienced trauma and related issues, but might – for example – have a single parent who is suddenly hospitalised, leaving their youngsters in need of care. Ms Tyrell said Uniting Vic.Tas provided training, ongoing support and upskilling for

foster carers. She said foster carers could be single, in a relationship, working, studying or retired. “We welcome carers of any culture, religion and sexual orientation,” she said. Learning basic first aid skills for pets can mean the difference between life and death, RSPCA Victoria has warned Brimbank pet owners. To help pet owners learn vital first aid skills that could save a furry friend’s life in an emergency, RSPCA Victoria is launching its first ever virtual animal first aid course, Focused First Aid for Pets. The first course started last week and the next will be held on November 24 at 7pm. Focused First Aid for Pets is an hour and 30-minute webinar focused on providing participants with the best information available to be better placed to help a pet in the case of an emergency situation. The course comprises an one-hour presentation plus a question and answer session to ensure participants understand the information provided. Belinda Marchbank of RSPCA Victoria, and a veterinary nurse with many years’ experience, said the course provides necessary tools for all pet owners. “Focused First Aid for Pets will teach pet owners the basics of pet first aid, providing people with important knowledge that will support them to act without panic and do the best they can for their pets in the case of an emergency,” Ms Marchbank said. As pet owners prepare for the spring and summer seasons ahead, the course also provides advice about a range of scenarios which are common in the warmer months. This includes how to pick up on the warning signs of heat stress and how to avoid it, what to do if a pet is bitten by a snake and how to manage insect bites. Participants will hear about CPR, bandaging, how to monitor a pet’s vital signs and react appropriately, along with the importance of pet first aid kits and how to improvise with common household items. RSPCA Victoria’s Focused First Aid for Pets course also provides basic knowledge about how to care for a pet that has been injured by a car and the steps to take when travelling to seek veterinary care. A stranger’s kindness helps Woronka family Travis McCarty is walking 100 kilometres over 24 hours to help a family he doesn’t know. The father of four was so struck by a news item about the Woronka family he decided to do something to help them. Seven-year-old twins Riley and Cooper, along with their two-year-old brother Logan, have all been diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a rare and progressive muscle-wasting condition which has no cure. It’s likely all will need wheelchairs by the time they are 12. Mr McCarty, said the story really stuck with him. “It was a really moving thing,” he said. “I saw it on the news and I wanted to do something. I sat there for a bit and the first

thing I did was donate to their GoFundMe page to help them buy a big van. “I felt like we could do something more and in the end I decided to do that walk.” Mr McCarty, who had never met the family, messaged them to see whether they were happy with him doing a fundraising walk. He said Bekk Woronka was ‘stoked’ that a stranger would do that for the family. The family have set up their own fundraising page, firstly to buy a van to fit three wheelchairs and then for a house deposit. On December 12, Mr McCarty will walk from Craigieburn to Point Cook, where the Woronka family lives. He will be joined by three friends, including his boss and Sunbury Cricket Club coach Scott Yardley, and colleague JD Houston, who

will walk 100 kilometres between them. The walk will start in Craigieburn and go through Thomastown, Epping North, Altona North and Newport on the way to Point Cook.

By Goya Dmytryshchak Victoria’s first and only female premier could be recognised with the renaming of the federal electorate of Gellibrand after “the west’s favourite daughter”. Joan Kirner, who died in 2015 at age 76, has been remembered as the ultimate trailblazer whose love of Williamstown was matched only by her passion for education and equal rights for women. She was the member for Melbourne West from 1982-88 and for Williamstown from 1988-1994. Labor MP Tim Watts is petitioning the Australian Electoral Commission to rename the federal electorate he represents from Gellibrand to Kirner. Watts previously pushed for Gellibrand to be renamed Cooper, after Indigenous rights pioneer William Cooper. Instead, the electorate of Batman, which took its name from John Batman, was abolished in 2019 and replaced by the division of Cooper. In 2018, Mr Watts said European lawyer and explorer Joseph Gellibrand, who is thought to be a drafter of the Batman Treaty that dispossessed several Aboriginal clans of their land, was not an appropriate namesake for a federal electorate. Mr Watts’ current petition states the names of federal electorates should recognise Australians who have made outstanding contributions to our nation. “Yet the contributions of women who have helped make Australia the country it is today are dramatically underrepresented in the names of our federal electorates,” it states. “There are many women who have made outstanding contributions to Australia but only 17 of the 150 federal electorates are named after them. We can do better.” The AEC is currently considering public suggestions on the redistribution of Gellibrand and Mr Watts told Star Weekly it was “our opportunity to show them we want to give women the recognition they deserve”. “That’s why I’ve launched this campaign to rename my electorate after Joan Kirner, a great Australian woman and a great woman of

More state funding is available for Brimbank women in sports. Applications are open for the Change our Game scholarship program, which aims at achieving a level playing field in sport and active recreation, and supporting more women to take on leadership roles. Community Sport Minister Ros Spence encouraged sporting clubs and bodies to identify emerging female leaders within their community for the scholarship program. Scholarships range in value from $2000 to $10,000 and support a range of professional development activities aimed at enhancing skills in sport and recreation leadership and management. “These scholarships are helping to level the playing field for women and girls, and will create greater diversity in decision-making roles across all levels of Victorian sport and active recreation,” Ms Spence said. “This boost will ensure women working and volunteering in sport and recreation are given opportunities to further their career, and the sector as a whole can continue the momentum that has been built around gender equality.” Applications are submitted on behalf of individuals by state sport and recreation bodies, regional sports assemblies and local government authorities. The sector has been heavily impacted by coronavirus so a new category has been developed to support career coaching for women who have had their employment impacted as a result of the pandemic. Schools go above and beyond In a year like no other, the inaugural Rotary Teacher Team Awards have recognised a local primary school among the state’s most outstanding. Annunciation Primary School at Brooklyn was recognised for delivering online learning during COVID-19, with teachers meeting in their own time. Altona City Rotary Club vocational director Bryan Goodwin said there had been 36 nominations. “The team awards [are] where a group of teachers have collaborated effectively to address an important challenge or new development

for a school,” he said. Other awards included Altona College for a two-year project to expand from P-9 to a P-12 college, creating the first Altona school catering for all years. Bayside College’s Williamstown campus was acknowledged for introducing a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) program for upper primary to year 9. Williamstown High School was honoured for managing its international student program during the coronavirus pandemic, supporting many students in Melbourne without their

parents. Back to the gym A good instructor should allow for this, and will have some great modifications if you really do find something too tricky.

You don’t have to be fit to start Just like you wouldn’t get your hair trimmed before you go to the hairdresser, you don’t have to be fit to start in a group fitness class (as long as the class is suitable for all fitness levels). Stage 4 Restrictions have not made good bedfellows for allowing Melbournians to maintain a fitness regime of any sort. Some have made it outside, kids in tow, for daily ‘iso walks’ and some have done a home workout each day. But, for the past six months, we haven’t been able to step foot inside a gym. And that’s a long time to have off! Things will have changed – some out of necessity and some changes to reinvigorate fitness businesses. So, the post-Iso return to the gym or group fitness class will be reminiscent of being a beginner. Here are some tips that should help you have a great time at your first session back.

Wear comfy clothes and runners/sneakers You just need to be able to move well in them – so a pair of tracksuit pants, shorts or leggings and a comfy t-shirt or active wear top is best. Your shoes should ideally be laced-up runners with good grip to keep yourself safe. Masks must be worn at all times until you are physically exerting yourself.

Some other things to bring You may need to bring your own mat and maybe even your own weights at the start – check ahead about this; your own full water bottle; bring a towel (a hand-towel will do here); and a small bag for your things. And hand sanitiser, although this should be supplied.

There are usually a couple of ways to do this – best bet to check out your gym’s website. While gathering numbers are restricted and contact tracing is required, you will have to book in to attend.

Go with a friend Having a familiar face to smile or grimace with can be reassuring if you’re new. Remember, everyone in that room was new at one stage. Even the instructor!

While some moves may feel uncomfortable or unusual, nothing should physically hurt you during the class.

Take your time Go in with an open mind Don’t set any expectations of yourself or of the class. Be open to trying new things.

From a practical point of actually getting yourself to the class and your expectations on yourself in the class.

Firstly, arrive at least 10 minutes before the class starts. You need time to get a lay of the land and to fill out any paperwork, to set up and to have a chat to the instructor. Secondly, take your time once you’re in the class. It’s much better to do five great squats while everyone else is doing twenty, than to hurt yourself doing those twenty squats poorly.

Solve it HOMMUS Ingredients 400g can chickpeas 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 lemon, juiced 3 tbsp tahini

1 tbsp olive oil, plus a splash of extra virgin on top to serve Salt and black pepper, to taste 1 tsp ground cumin (optional)

Method 1. Drain chickpeas and reserve the liquid. Put all the ingredients, except salt, pepper, ground cumin and saved liquid, in a food processor and whiz for about 30 seconds or until smooth. 2. Add a little of the reserved chickpea liquid to achieve the perfect consistency. The mixture should be creamy, not wet. 3. Season to taste and add ground cumin (optional). For extra flavour you can experiment with different flavours such as dried chilli, extra garlic or ground coriander. 4. To serve, drizzle with a little extra olive oil and garnish with chopped fresh coriander leaves or continental parsley or paprika. Serve with vegie sticks, pita crisps or biscuits.

You will need 1/2 cup cornflour 1/4 cup water balloons Method 1. Mix cornflour and water in a bowl until combined. Mixture will appear to go hard but as you mix it will loosen again. 2. SPORT Hillier bolsters Wyndham’s coaching panel The lure of working at a big association was behind Gerard Hillier’s move to the Wyndham Basketball Association. Hillier is a successful coach at a number of different levels and has worked with both Basketball Victoria and in club land. He joins Wyndham as its new player and coach development manager. Hillier said it was exciting to join a club such as Wyndham. “It’s a big club and big growth area which has a lot of good pathways and good programs already,” he said. “I grew up in Yarraville so I’m a western suburbs boy. I was at Southern Pen for the last 10 years. “Southern Pen is a small club, I wanted to look for a bigger club. Wyndham is in that growth corridor and there’s so many options.”

Hillier, who was the Sharks director of coaching and pathways, coached just about every level of basketball at Southern Peninsula, He also was Australian head coach for the 3X3 team for the Youth Olympics. Hillier replaces Reece Potter in the role, with Potter moving back to Sydney. With the two men sharing a friendship, Hillier already has plenty of knowledge of the Wyndham program. “Reece and I worked side-by-side and mentored each other with our programs and everything at club land. “I’ve got a good grip on the program and we’re well positioned to move forward again.” Hillier, who started the role last week, said while the focus would be on helping further develop all their programs, the first step was a simple one.

“After COVID-19 the immediate challenge is getting all young players and senior domestic players back playing again. “Obviously this has been an extremely challenging time for everyone in our sport, but it has been heartening to see players and coaches continue to commit to improvement through online sessions. “I would love to talk about championships and winning things, but getting local players back playing basketball again is the most important thing.” He said there would be some junior players move into the Big V program next season. “We not only want to be a big program, but a program filled with locals,” he said. “We want to bring a few junior players into the program to help develop them and for the longevity of the program.”

Late coaching change By Tara Murray Altona has had a last minute coaching change ahead of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west season, with Shane Jones moving to Queensland. Jones was appointed the club’s coach for this season earlier this year having returned from premier club Footscray. But a job opportunity in Queensland has meant he can’t continue on in the role. The club announced last Saturday that James Grubb, who was set to be an assistant coach this season, will step up into the coaching role. A’s president Darren McConville said it was disappointing to lose Jones, who previously played at the club. “Shane got the promotion and they asked him to move to Queensland to run the office up there. “It’s a good opportunity for him and the family to relocate.” McConville said it was an easy decision to appoint Grubb as coach. Grubb returned to the club last season after spending time at premier club Footscray. McConville said COVID-19 meant it was difficult to look at external coaches without getting them into the club and being so close to the start of the season. Lsst season Grubb averaged more than 50 with the bat, making more than 800 runs for the season, the second most in the division. He also took 26 wickets to be in the top 10 as well as being one of the standout players of the competition for the season. “James is more than capable,” McConville said. “He was doing a lot of the pre-planning with Shane anyway, so it won’t be a massive jump in learning for him.” McConville said they had managed to keep most of last season’s playing group together heading into this season. The A’s made the semi-finals last season, losing to Williamstown, which was crowned premiers for finishing on top of the ladder after the grand final didn’t go ahead. In a bonus for the A’s, Josh Young returns from Willy Imps. McConville said the club was looking to use the semi-final appearance as a base to go at least one step further this season. The A’s are scheduled to start their season on November 21 against Yarraville. The season will be all one-dayers due to COVID-19. McConville said they would be ready to start training once they were given the go ahead. It’s expected that clubs will have clearer timeframes in the next week or so. “We’ve had a lot of help from the VSDCA, Cricket Victoria and council,” he said.

The Devils are starting to put their rosters in place for next season. Boomers legend John Dorge is back as men’s coach, while the club is set to announce a new women’s coach in the coming weeks. Potter, who had a dual role at the club, was also coach of the women’s side. Hillier said he would likely do some coaching at the club as well. WBA general manager Craig Armstead said Hillier would be a terrific asset for the association. “Gerard’s resume speaks for itself, with experience across all levels of basketball, and his commitment to improvement during his time at Southern Peninsula really stood out for the WBA executive,” Armstead said. Lakers ready to pounce Caroline Springs believes it’s in a good position for a finals tilt in Western Region Football League division 1. Having improved every year in the top flight, the Lakers were hoping for a finals berth in 2020 before COVID-19 hit. Lakers football director Marc Raak said with the majority of their list signing on and a few new recruits, they were happy with how things were going. Brodie Holland will again lead the side after re-signing as coach. “We were in a really good position, thinking that the season was going to go ahead,” Raak said. “We had 50-odd on the training track and we were a bit devastated that it didn’t go ahead. “We spoke as a club and set goals for this year to get into a finals game for the first time in div 1. The players and coaching staff are driven.” Raak said they had lost just one player from this year’s squad, which was due to business commitments in Mildura. Their new signings for 2020 have re-signed for next year, led by former Adelaide-listed player Will Young. The Lakers have announced their first new signing for 2021, with ruckman Brock McGregor joining the club. McGregor had been playing with Essendon District Football League premier division side Keilor. He missed last year’s premiership after injuring his knee. “He is a ruck and it was a hole that we needed to fill,” Raak said. “We spoke with him a while ago about giving him an opportunity. What we are looking for suited us both and he’s looking to move into the Caroline Springs area and be part of our community.” Raak said they were delighted with where the list was sitting at the moment. He said they were still talking to players. “There’s one or two others we would like to add to our list as well. “We’ll look to improve in one or two other areas.” Like all clubs, the Lakers are unsure when they will be able to start pre-season training due to COVID-19 restrictions. Raak said they would look to start as soon as they were allowed. “We’re just waiting for clarification,” he said. “When we’re allowed, we will be out there on that day we’re allowed.” Tara Murray

Seidel appointed Melton Thoroughbreds coach Andrew Seidel is returning to the coaching hot seat after being appointed Melton Thoroughbreds’ Big V women’s coach for next year’s division 2 season. Seidel coached the Sunbury Jets youth league girls team to back-to-back championships in 2017-18, but was not reappointed to lead the side in the Youth League Championships division for the first time. After two years out of coaching, Seidel decided he wanted back in and successfully applied for the Melton women’s role. Seidel said the COVID-19 break, which resulted in limited basketball this year, had played a role in getting him back into basketball. “Unfortunately I wasn’t reappointed after two championships at Sunbury and I had to walk away from coaching as there wasn’t any jobs,” he said. “I’ve had the passion and the bite to coach again the last month or two. I applied for a couple of jobs and got this one.

“During COVID I missed basketball.” Seidel has just built a house in the Melton municipality, which played a factor in applying for the role. He replaces Lauren Olcorn, who stood down as coach. Olcorn was instrumental in getting the women’s Big V program back up and running in Melton. The side was reestablished in 2018 after folding at the end of 2010. “Lauren stepped away due to some family commitments and decided to not go on with the role,” Seidel said. “I want to see if we can develop the side even further and get it up into division 1.” Seidel said he knew a couple of players from this year’s squad, having previously coached them at Sunbury. He said he would look to recruit a few players to help strength the side. The club has also announced Adrian Adams as the youth league women’s coach. The club was due to have a yough league girls team for

the first time this year, before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. Seidel said it was exciting to see the pathway being established at the club. “I’ve had experience coaching youth league and getting a pathway and somewhere to move up to, gives them a bit more incentive. “Hopefully they’ll stay around and play women’s.” Seidel said he can’t wait to get things underway. “I’m excited,” he said. “I’m someone with fresh ideas and new to the club. “Hopefully the club is heading in the right direction and I’m extremely excited about this new opportunity.” Tara Murray Andrew Seidel is back in the coching hot seat. Second win for Dragons By Tara Murray It’s been a juggling act for Gisborne as it returned to the nets and field in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association. As a regional club, the Dragons are allowed to train in groups of set numbers. Regional teams in the GDCA are also playing against each other in a round robin competition until the metro teams are allowed to play. New McIntyre Cup captain Jason Wilson said it had been good to be back. “We’re getting about 70-odd people to training,” he said. “It’s good to have a run around with some mates and be back out there after six months. “It’s challenging organising it all and we have to do it over a couple of different ovals and there’s a few different team leaders.” Among those training with the Dragons are several Gisborne-based cricketers who are playing in Melbourne competitions. All have played for the Dragons at some point in their careers.

Several of them, including premier cricket players Lachie McKenna and Roby Lane, last season’s captain Jarryd Vernon and Luke Macumber, all played in the Dragons opening round matches. “It’s great having their knowledge and leadership around with them all playing at a high level of cricket,” Wilson said. “It’s good to see them pass on the knowledge to the younger players, as we have a lot of them. “I’m just trying to balance that on the field as we have plenty of depth with those guys playing. “I do have to manage everyone on the field and give everyone a hit and rotate the batting.” Another player who has started the season with the Dragons is former Australian under-19 captain Pat McKenna. McKenna, who spent time on Greater Western Sydney and Melbourne’s AFL lists, hasn’t played a lot of cricket in recent years. He played two games last season for the Dragons. Wilson said McKenna would play with them until Christmas but is unsure of his

availability after the break because of work commitments. Wilson, who captained his home club back in Gippsland for a number of years, said he was enjoying the opportunity to step up and captain the Dragons. On Friday, the Dragons faced Woodend in the second of its regional senior competition pool matches and made it two from two. Woodend made 9-83 from its overs, with former Dragon Riley Vernon top scoring with 40. Roby Lane took two wickets. The Dragons made the runs two wickets down and with five overs remaining. Sam Mackay top-scored with 40 not out. Making the most of the public holiday proved a successful move with rain resulting in few other matches being completed. Just three other senior matches achieved results over Friday and Saturday. In Pool B, Bacchus Marsh 2 was too good for Riddell. The other pool A match featuring the McIntyre Cup teams, Romsey and Bacchus Marsh didn’t go ahead.

Glen Marr has held many coaching roles at Taylors Lakes Cricket Club. He’s coached junior sides and, for the past three seasons, has been the batting coach for the senior Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association side. This season he has taken on the senior coaching role, replacing Janaka Deegodagamage who has left the club to coach at a higher level. Marr said he just loved cricket and being involved. “For me, I’m just happy to do anything,” he said. “I’ve been on and off at the club for 20 years and my sons play here. “I’ve been helping out in the past and I’m not working any more, so I have more time to put into it. “I just love the game and the enjoyment for me is seeing them all improve.” Marr already knows most of the playing group and has played with several of the junior players coming through. He said the club had kept most of last year’s side together, but travel restrictions meant they would be without international players – Aamir Raza was meant to be an assistant coach while playing at the club for a second season. Marr said they were still settling their line-up, with COVID-19 delaying some people’s decisions about their playing future. Amhit Padwal, who played with Altona last season, will be a playing assistant coach. Marr and Padwal have already been speaking about training plans, with a likely date for a return to training nearing. The Lions last season made a qualifying final after an exciting final round of the season. Marr said the biggest focus this season was improvement. “The first thing is we will try and focus on the skills,” he said. “We won’t set any targets, it’s a funny season. “We are traditionally better in one-dayers from my experience because of our batting, but I will take it as it comes. “I’ll try and get the guys to enjoy it and better themselves. If we make good choices when in the middle, the rest will take care of itself.” The Lions are set to kick off their season on November 21, at home against Ivanhoe. Tara Murray
