Sprout’s big surgery Young kitten Sprout may be tiny in size, but he has a large amount of luck. Four-week-old Sprout and his littermates were born after his mother came into the care of Purrs of Point Cook. The registered charity and cat rescue group launched an online fundraising campaign last week after discovering that Sprout needed emergency surgery. Purrs rescuer Rebecca said Sprout was born with a congenital defect known as Atresia Ani, which would have been fatal without surgery. Thanks to the generous support of donors and community members, more than $1500 was raised. “We are blessed to be supported by so many animal lovers in our community,” Rebecca said Sprout underwent the emergency surgery at the Hobsons Bay Vet Clinic last Tuesday, under the watchful eye of Dr Lisia Sturm and other team members. Calls for election probe By Alesha Capone Several candidates in this month’s Wyndham council elections have called for an investigation following the release of ‘dubious’ how-to-vote material. Wyndham residents have received an “election guide” in the mail, purporting to be “authorised by the Wyndham Ratepayers’ Association”. However, the pamphlet does not contain the name and street address of who authorised its publication – a requirement of the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) – and the association does not appear to exist any more. Star Weekly last week spoke to several Iramoo

ward candidates who confirmed they had been contacted via email by the association asking about their policies. Most said they had responded in good faith, believing the association to be genuine. However, some questioned the legitimacy of the association, which does not appear to have an online or social media presence. Candidate Mick French said: “I gave no consent and I have not spoken to anyone from the organisation.” Amandeep Kaur, said she was “very surprised” to see her name on the flyer. “Definitely this matter should be investigated properly,” she said. Dhiren Trivedi, said he was “shocked” that

his name appeared on the pamphlet. Iramoo ward nominee Lisa Field called for “firm action” by the Local Government Inspectorate (LGI). “We need to focus on the capable and experienced candidates, those who are running a genuine campaign,” she said. Different versions of another document, spruiking itself as a “how to vote guide” from the “Independent Coalition for Good Governance”, have also been posted. Harrison ward candidate Larry Zhao said he had never heard of the coalition, despite his name appearing in the top five on some its “how to vote” lists. Mr Zhao said he has also noticed misleading

posts in other languages on social media, claiming that Wyndham can only have one councillor from a certain cultural background. “I do feel the LGI should jump in to monitor the process,” Mr Zhao said. Harrison ward candidate Tully Smith said there had been instances of “unauthorised material” being sent out to voters. “The VEC provides all candidates with an information pack, including a very clear set of guidelines,” Mr Smith said. “It has been incredibly disappointing to see that some candidates have … chosen to ignore it.” Star Weekly contacted the Wyndham Ratepayers’ Association’s email address and did not receive a response.

Virus cases fall across the west By Alesha Capone The western suburbs reached a positive milestone last week but hopes for significant easing of restrictions on businesses are fading as new infections persist. Retail, hairdressers, beauty therapists and outdoor dining were flagged to reopen with strict hygiene protocols under the third step in easing restrictions from October 19, if Victoria hit a rolling 14-day case average of five or less, and fewer than five mystery cases in a fortnight.

But the average lingered around 9.9 on Monday – well above the metropolitan Melbourne target. The number of active coronavirus cases in Wyndham continues to fall with 24 active on Monday, down from 32 a week earlier. Brimbank recorded the state’s second-highest number of active cases (21), followed by Monash (19) and Hobsons Bay (14). The Department of Health and Human Services has advised that a person with the virus shopped at Manor Lakes Central,

including at the Coles store, between 11am and noon on October 6. Anyone who attended the centre during this timeframe, and who displays any COVID-19 symptoms, is urged to get tested immediately. Several covid-hotpots in the north and western suburbs last week reported zero new cases for the first time since March. An outcome that community health service cohealth put down to a community-led response, a joint response from multiple community health services, and culturally specific health efforts.

Artists push for regional gallery Representatives of Wyndham’s arts community held a demonstration at the former Melbourne Water Discovery Centre on Friday, calling on Wyndham council to use the site as a regional art gallery. The council announced last year that it had acquired the Werribee centre from Melbourne Water. Since then, groups including the Wyndham Artists Advocacy Group (WAAG) and RedWest Creatives Co-Op Ltd have been urging the council to transform the centre into a regional art gallery. WAAG convenor Angela Hickey said last

week’s demonstration was held in accordance with pandemic regulations, and included herself and Werribee artist Will Francis. Ms Hickey said turning the centre into a gallery would create jobs post-COVID-19 and attract tourists to Werribee – much like the Heide Museum of Modern Art does in Bulleen, in Melbourne’s north-east. Mr Francis said being positioned between Footscray’s arts scene and Geelong meant that Werribee was the ideal place for a regional art gallery. He said a gallery could work with other

regional galleries in the state and become part of an “art trail” for tourists. “We’ve got something to offer here, the west is developing so quickly and there is a real need for something like that,” Mr Francis said. Wyndham chief executive Kelly Grigsby said the council was “still in the process of finalising the purchase” of the centre. “Further engagement will take place with the community before a decision on its future use will be made,” she said.

Motorists are being warned to watch out for lane closures and roadworks, as early construction works on the Old Geelong Road level crossing removal ramp up this month. Works at the site were halted in August, in line with stage four pandemic restrictions. However, the Level Crossing Removal Project last week announced that works were starting again, with strict health and safety protocols in place. Intermittent lane closures and reduced speeds will be implemented in the project area, and workers will be positioned on the median strip between the Princes Highway and the Princes Freeway, to realign lanes with new temporary line-markings and relocate light poles. Work will take place in the rail corridor at night to install underground services, excavate and pour concrete. From November 5, the northern and southern car parks at Hoppers Crossing station will be closed until mid-2022 to make way for the new pedestrian overpass. More than 400 car parks will be available at a temporary car park on the opposite side of the Princes Highway, off Hoppers Lane. The temporary car park is a five to 10-minute walk from Hoppers Crossing Station. Vehicle access will be via Old Sneydes Road. Existing accessible car spaces at Hoppers Crossing station will remain open. The Princes Freeway city-bound off-ramp towards Princess Highway, in Hoppers Crossing, will remain closed until 2022. Police in Geelong charged four people with drug possession and fined them for breaching COVID-19 restrictions following a check on an unregistered vehicle. Mental health appeal Werribee Hospital Foundation has launched the 5KOK appeal for local mental health services. The foundation’s chief executive Leanne Down said the appeal would take place in October, which is National Mental Health Month. Ms Down said the appeal allowed everyone to join in by fundraising while boosting their mental health through exercise. “We all have mental health and it’s important to take care of it, just as you would with any other health focuses,” Ms Down said. “Just because it is invisible to the eye doesn’t mean it’s not important. “Exercise can really help when it comes to taking care of your mental health. “It increases blood flow to the brain and stimulates chemicals like endorphins and serotonin.

“It can also help with our moods, anxiety, mental clarity, improve productivity and memory and you can even get a better night’s sleep.” To participate in 5KOK, choose an activity you would like to do for five kilometres, such as walking, running, cycling, skating or swimming. Start your tracker – if you have one on your mobile phone, for example – so you know when you’ve reached five kilometres and take a photo at the end. Afterwards, share your achievement and upload a photo of your tracker and/or yourself on social media, using #whf5kok. Nominate five other people to do the same and make a donation to the foundation at whf. org.au. All donations will go towards helping support patients with mental health services.

A 23-year-old Laverton man is facing 38 charges following a crime spree in the northern and western suburbs. Police allege the man committed two aggravated burglaries in Laverton and also stole credit cards and personal items from parked cars in the Altona, Altona North, Kingsville, Point Cook, Wyndham Vale, Tarneit, St Albans, Keilor, Sunshine, Sunshine North and Reservoir between August 17 and September 26. He was remanded in custody to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on October 16.

Support for struggling families By Alesha Capone An Albert Park couple have started an online fundraising campaign to help vulnerable Tarneit families pay their electricity bills during the COVID-19 pandemic. Henry and Jan-Maree Blatman established the GoFundMe campaign last month, titled Helping Hand for Tarneit (Victoria), with the goal of raising $6000. Mr Blatman said they hoped to divide the money between 20 or so Tarneit families, to help them pay their electricity bills for a period

of two to three months. Mr Blatman said that he and his wife decided to start the fundraising campaign after watching an episode of the ABC’s Four Corners program, which showcased a Tarneit family struggling to pay their electricity bill. “We felt helpless watching these people talk about their distress and decided we would not go back to our relative comfort without doing something,” he said. Mr Blatman said he and Jan-Maree started the GoFundMe campaign the next day, and also posted a video on YouTube.

So far, the campaign has raised $3580 in donations. “I’ve been blown away by the support we’ve got, I’m still determined to get to $6000,” Mr Blatman said. He said a Four Corners producer had put him in touch with the United Sikhs, who are working to help Tarneit families who have lost income due to the pandemic. Mr Blatman, an accountant, said the United Sikhs would decide which households to allocate the Helping Hand for Tarneit funds to. He said while some people felt helpless

to assist others doing it tough due to the pandemic, he and Jan-Maree had decided to be proactive. “This is a small drop in the ocean, but it’s doing something,” he said. “It’s helping people who, through, no fault of their own, are in need and need to maintain their basic needs. “I think it’s a good thing for the western suburbs, to know that people on the other side of town are thinking of them.” To donate: www.gofundme.com/f/helpinghand-for-tarneit-victoria.

Dishing up kindness Werribee restaurant Indo Eats is helping international students and others who are doing it tough during the COVID-19 pandemic. In early August, Indo Eats Werribee started offering free meals to international students and other disadvantaged people, such as those who have lost their jobs but have no access to government welfare support. The free meals are available every Wednesday, from 5pm until closing time. Indo Eats co-owner Aladin Mohamed, who runs the business with his wife, said they started the Wednesday sessions after seeing an increasing number of international students hand their resume in at the restaurant in the hope of finding work. Aladin said while they were unable to hire new workers due to the pandemic he and his family wanted to help the international students.

“It’s just time to give back to the community,” he said. Aladin said some international students, who live as far away as Footscray and the Melbourne CBD, were requesting the free meals be delivered to them. Indo Eats was opened in January, achieving a five year dream for Aladin and his wife, but operating during the pandemic has been tough. “It’s a bad time to open, but we just stay positive and keep going,” Aladin said. He said that some regular customers were supportive of Indo Eats’ efforts to help international students. “Some of our customers donate to us and say, ‘well done, you’re doing a good job’,” he said. Budget investment welcomed By Alesha Capone and Tara Murray Wyndham council has welcomed the federal government’s $30 million funding commitment to the Western Rail Plan, as outlined in last week’s federal budget. Under the plan, the state and federal governments will deliver two new electrified metropolitan train lines to Melton and Wyndham Vale, which are currently serviced by diesel V-Line trains to Ballarat and Geelong. Electrification of a separate rail line to Wyndham Vale would also be required to

enable a fast rail connection to Geelong. Wyndham council’s chief executive Kelly Grigsby said: “Both Wyndham and Geelong are facing issues with the capacity of the Regional Rail Line to meet demand from years of rapid urban growth. “Bringing this plan forward will provide urgently needed capacity for additional trains to Wyndham Vale and Tarneit.” The Western Rail Plan would also potentially link the Wyndham Vale line with the Werribee line, which Ms Grigsby described as “an important component for the Suburban Rail

Loop which will connect every rail line from Cheltenham to Werribee.” The state government’s 2019-20 budget included $100 million to deliver detailed planning and design works for the Western Rail Plan. Staging of the Western Rail Plan is being considered alongside planning which is under way for the Melbourne Airport Rail Link business case, which is due this year. In last week’s budget, the federal government also brought forward $5 million funding for the Outer Metropolitan Ring Road/E6 corridor

preservation, a 100 kilometre-long high-speed transport link to create better connections to key transport hubs such as Melbourne Airport, Avalon Airport and the proposed Western Interstate Freight Terminal. Ms Grigsby said the council hoped the federal budget would also assist Wyndham residents in recovering from the economic impact of the pandemic. “As one of the hardest-hit municipalities in Australia during COVID-19, Wyndham residents need assistance and support from all three tiers of government,” she said.

Internationals arrive Twenty-nine international thoroughbreds are being quarantined at the Werribee Racecourse ahead of this year’s Spring Racing Carnival. A flight with the horses on board arrived at Tullamarine Airport earlier this month. The racehorses completed a mandatory two-week quarantine period at facilities in the United Kingdom and Ireland, before coming to Australia. Some of the horses being housed at TAB International Horse Centre in Werribee will compete in the Stella Artois Caulfield Cup Day on Saturday. Racing Victoria’s general manager – international and racing operations, Paul Bloodworth, said: “It’s very pleasing to see such a high-quality group of horses arrive here in Melbourne to contest some of Australia’s greatest races. “Despite the additional challenges that 2020 has presented, the show of support from some

of the world’s leading stables once again proves what tremendous value they place on Victoria’s Spring Racing Carnival. “With no spectators currently allowed on racetracks in Victoria, it is vitally important that the quality of our racing remains extremely high for TV audiences here, and indeed across the world, to enjoy. “I’m confident that the combination of an elite international presence and a very strong local contingent will ensure that this year’s Spring Racing Carnival commands great interest for racing fans and punters alike.” One well-known horse living in the Werribee stables is Prince of Arran, who finished third in the 2018 Melbourne Cup and second last year. Mr and Mrs Wall, two founding members of the ParKanDo peer support group, said one of the reasons behind the group was “to help people know they are not isolated and there is help out there”. Mr Wall is a co-leader of ParKanDo, along with Brooklyn resident Pam West, while Mrs Wall is treasurer.

Mr Wall said ParKanDo also aimed to get people involved in physical and social activities, and has been running a regular strength and balance class on Zoom, in partnership with Victoria University’s Werribee gym, during the pandemic. Mr Wall said that although Parkinson’s is the second-most common neurological condition for Australians to be diagnosed with, some people do not know much about the illness. It is estimated that 27,000 Victorians are living with Parkinson’s, with 18 per cent of people diagnosed while aged under 65. There is no known cause or cure for the illness, which has symptoms including stiffened muscles, slowing movement, tremors, pain, depression, speech changes and loss of facial expression. Mrs Wall was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 13 years ago. “It can be a very isolating disease, it’s much

easier to stay home and not go out, if you have trouble walking and talking,” she said. However, Mrs Wall said she did not want to be defined by her diagnosis. “I’m still me,” she said. Mr and Mrs Wall have encouraged residents

Pilot unites community A pilot project aimed at reducing the social isolation of African men living in Wyndham has been declared a success. The not-for-profit Edo Club of Australia Inc was established in 2007, as the peak national Edo State organisation for associations, organisations and individual groupings of Edo migrants, who originally hail from southern Nigeria. The Edo Club’s welfare, innovation and advocacy chair, Mohammed Isah, said members voted the Men’s Support Group as an important project, at an annual club meeting held last year. The club went on to receive a community grant from Wyndham council, to help establish the support group as a pilot project. The group aims to provide an opportunity for Wyndham men, from an African background,

to come together and develop social support networks while engaging in activities. Mr Isah said the support group also aims to build healthy relationships and increase awareness about Australian culture, provide cross-cultural learning and develop information and referral pathways to other services including mental health, education and employment for African-Australian men. A man who has participated in the support group, business and finance professional Edwin Ngbeken, said: “The group brought me closer to my community, the African community in Victoria. “I benefited from the workshops organised, especially the kitchen table discussion about fathers as good role models for children.” Details: https://www.edoclub.org.au.

I love creating, whether it’s creating a social media post, course or team that drives or helps scale the business. Every day is different and I’m creating every day. How has your business grown since you started out in 2011? Last year we ran a conference which saw 200 people come to the city of Melbourne. To go from teaching eight people (how to use Facebook for their businesses) in the Point Cook library, to over 200 people in the NAB building, was quite exciting. We work with a lot of small businesses – in accounting and personal trainers – it’s wide and varied. Our clients are not only in Australia but in the USA. Has COVID-19 impacted on your business, either negatively or positively? It’s definitely been a mix of both. We have lost some clients in the wedding and entertainment industry but gained some new ones – for

example, a professional home organiser. We were also selected to mentor businesses as part of Wyndham council’s efforts to help businesses in pandemic recovery efforts, as part of the WYNLocal Economic Support Package. We’ve been delivering mentoring sessions to small business in Wyndham since April and May, it’s been good to be able to help other businesses. One thing this mentoring program has demonstrated to us is how valuable our expertise, support and guidance is, especially right now, when businesses need to be marketing themselves online if they wish to survive. How did you feel when your business was announced as a Preferred Facebook Marketing Partner earlier this year? I’m incredibly excited because we’ve been doing Facebook ads since 2011 and in that time, to get that recognition from Facebook, is great. migrants and young families who had already lost jobs or businesses in the current crisis. Several Wyndham councillors criticised the move, one comparing the idea to a Monty Python skit. Cr Henry Barlow, who was first elected to the council in 1997, said: “This would have to be the worst notice of motion I’ve ever heard in my life”. “It looks as if it comes out of a Monty Python sketch.” Cr Barlow said that cutting rates by 10 per cent would give the majority of residents an

extra $2.80 to $4 per week. He said he sent Cr Khan an email on March 31, urging Cr Khan to be transparent about where the cuts would be “otherwise this just looks like blatant electioneering with a council election coming up”. Cr Kim McAliney said Cr Khan had not provided any financial modelling to support a 10 per cent rate reduction, which would result in “severe cuts” to the council’s capital programs and staff. Cr Peter Maynard said a 10 per cent cut in rates would result in the loss of about $21

Wyndham tops mortgage deferral By Alesha Capone Wyndham recorded the highest number of deferred mortgages in the nation during the middle of the year, according to credit reporting agency Equifax. The agency has released figures showing that about 5000 Wyndham property owners were granted a mortgage deferral in May. The municipality of Wanneroo, in Perth’s northern suburbs, placed second, with more than 4000 mortgage deferrals. The Equifax analysis, which was based on credit history, repayment information and Australian Bureau of Statistics data available

difficulty experienced in these regions could be attributed to a higher prevalence of lower socio-economic suburbs, with low-income households and young people just starting out on the property ladder. “COVID-19 is having a particularly negative effect on the employment of young people,” Mr James said. “For those without significant savings, it isn’t easy to service a home loan when cash flow dries up. “We know Melbourne’s second lockdown will have further exacerbated the difficulties we’ve seen in our initial analysis on the available May data.

“Equifax will be closely monitoring this over the coming months to identify new hotspots.” Mr James said Australians aged 36 to 45 years old were the most likely age group to defer their mortgage repayments during the COVID-19 pandemic. “There are more middle-aged people seeking mortgage payment relief than any other age group,” he said. “This group is likely to have relatively high outstanding mortgage balances and may have been harder hit with business lay-offs or lower income from JobKeeper payments.” The age group with the least number of mortgage deferrals was 56 to 65 year olds.

Students have the write stuff Grade five pupils at Cambridge Primary School in Hoppers Crossing have been writing historical narratives, based on knowledge they gained through learning about colonisation. Teacher Jessica Green said that while engaged in remote learning last month, pupils researched colonisation from an Indigenous Australian perspective. Ms Green said the youngsters also studied the writing process; thinking critically about themes and connections in text; and looking at the features which make a hybrid text, a mix of

fiction and non-fiction, unique. “Throughout the process, the students learnt about the loss and treatment of Indigenous Australians and the action that the European settlers took during that period,” she said. “It was great to see that the kids were learning a side to Australia’s history that they may not have been aware of.” Ms Green said the pupils had enjoyed “taking fact and giving it their flair to turn it into fiction”. “During the remote learning process, I

think the one thing that stood out to me that the students had learnt … that they could take control of their learning and that they were more resilient than they gave themselves credit for,” she said. “I was so proud and, to be honest, left a little speechless because of the work that they have produced.” Ms Green said she wanted to thank the pupils and their parents for their efforts during remote learning.

IndianCare has launched an online program to help South Asian International Students during the pandemic. IndianCare, which is based in St Albans, is a not-for-profit organisation which aims to address the welfare needs of Victorians from an Indian background. The organisation last month launched Project SASS (South Asian Student Support) after receiving funding for the program through the state government’s International Student Welfare Program. Project SASS aims to promote the welfare and wellbeing of international students from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar, through culturallyappropriate activities to increase their leadership skills, workplace knowledge and social cohesion. The program also aims to address student’s physical, mental and emotional wellbeing during the pandemic. IndianCare has partnered with The University of Melbourne, RMIT University, La Trobe University, Victoria University and Federation University for the project, along with the Hindu Organisations Temple Associations Forum, the Australia India Society Victoria, the Aussizz Group of Immigration and Education Consultants, the Good Cycles social enterprise and the Australia India Sports Council. IndianCare is encouraging South Asian international students to get in contact if they would like a chat or information on emergency relief, job opportunities, accommodation, immigration, financial and legal services, mental health services, welfare support and services or assistance to access services. IndianCare is also committed to addressing the issue of family violence in the Indian communities in Victoria through prevention, early intervention, awareness-raising and education activities, with funding received from the state government. New generation is impressive By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring New Kia Sorento has just been launched in Australia. It’s aimed at those looking for the comfort of a sedan / people mover-type vehicle, not simply an SUV. The fourth generation of Kia’s popular Sorento SUV is the first vehicle to be based on Kia’s new-generation ‘N3’ SUV platform. It is wider than its predecessor and sits on a longer wheelbase so can accommodate seven people in comfort, and a significant amount of luggage. Even with all seven seats in place, boot space is 32 per cent larger than the superseded Sorento.

Styling The new shape is a collaborative design between all three studios in Kia’s worldwide design network – in Korea, Europe and North America. It is more sculpted than before with the front having the latest interpretation of Kia’s hallmark ‘tiger nose’ grille. There are rectangular lower air intakes, wing-shaped air curtains channel air around the car. The sharp bumper lip is capped with a skid plate. The trailing edge of the bonnet wraps around the front wings and turns into a single, strong character line which extends along the side of the Sorento and into the rear lights. The wide D-pillars that have defined all three Sorento previous generations have been retained but this time with a fair bit more style than previously. New Sorento has a choice of seven paint finishes; one standard colour in Clear White, and six Premium Paints ($695 option); Mineral Blue (New Colour), Snow White Pearl, Steel Grey, Silky Silver, Aurora Black and Gravity Blue.

Interior The dashboard area is reminiscent of the current Mercedes-Benz design, with two wide rectangular screens occupying an area stretching about two thirds of the way across the dashboard. Sorento is fitted with premium-quality materials and cutting-edge infotainment. Depending on grade there is embossed black cloth, leather-appointed black cloth and black quilted Nappa leather-appointed seats. New Kia Sorento has a stance that gives it an upmarket look. Infotainment A powerful 12-speaker BOSE surround-sound audio system is standard in the GT-Line. The S, Sport and Sport+ come with what Kia simply calls, “a quality six-speaker sound system”. The new Sorento incorporates Kia’s latest 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system offering audio-visual navigation. Entry-level S features an eight-inch colour LCD touch screen, and along with Sport and Sport+, a 4.2-inch colour TFT supervision instrument cluster. The infotainment system also allows Bluetooth smartphone pairing for two phones concurrently, enabling separate phones to be used for, for instance, phone calls and music, while front passengers can also plug in their mobile devices via three USB chargers. For second-row passengers, two USB charging sockets are integrated into the backs of the front seats (Sport+ & GT-Line only), with a third at the back of the front-row centre console. Both third-row passengers also have their own 12V Power Outlet charging points (whilst Sport+ and GT-Line offers two additional USB chargers), meaning all seven passengers can keep their mobile device charged – the perfect measure to maintain harmony in a full car during longer journeys. The 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment and navigation system has many functions and can also be controlled with new buttons on either side of the screen.

Engines / transmissions Kia’s new four-cylinder 2.2-litre ‘Smartstream’ diesel engine debuts in Australia in the Sorento. Producing 148kW and 440Nm torque

it is paired with Kia’s new eight-speed wet double-clutch transmission and drives all four wheels. An updated Lambda III 3.5 litre V6 petrol engine producing 200kW and 332Nm will drive the front wheels through Kia’s eight-speed torque converter automatic. It won’t be here till late November, perhaps early December. A plugin hybrid Sorento is due to be launched in 2021, it’s likely to come to Australia but Kia won’t comment at this stage.

Driving Like all Kia models, the Sorento’s on-road capability and comfort has been optimised to best suit the tastes of Australian drivers through the local tuning program. On road the designers have come close to providing the sedan-like comfort they were aiming for. Noise levels are low in general driving, bump-thump on joining strips on bridges is minimal, sound does increase on concrete motorways but is lower than average for a vehicle of this type. Cornering is positive, with good feedback

through the steering wheel and positive changes in direction when the driver wants it. Obviously it’s no sports car, nor a sports sedan, but those who enjoy diving won’t feel as frustrated as they would in others in this vehicle class. The engine is quiet even when accelerated hard. The automatic transmission changes imperceptibly and responds quickly to the conditions. Manual control through steering wheel paddles is there but unless you’re pedalling hard on your favourite driving road – which seems unlikely in an SUV – you’re probably not going to need the transmission overrides. Off road the Sorento has enhanced all-terrain ability thanks to having Terrain Mode (only in the diesels, keep in mind the petrols only have 2WD). TM assists the driver in mud, snow and sand. It controls the car’s standard electronic stability control, as well as the distribution of torque to all four wheels. The TM adapts transmission shift times to help maintain traction in hard off-road driving. However we didn’t do any off-road testing as many tracks are closed at the moment as locals are keen to keep strangers out. As with all Kia models Sorento is covered by the seven-year unlimited kilometre warranty, seven-year capped price service and seven-year roadside assist.

SPORT Ellard hoping to inspire Roadrunner women A post on Facebook was enough to grab Tom Ellard’s interest in the North Sunshine women’s football senior coaching role. Ellard, who spent six years playing in the VFL, applied for the role and was appointed earlier this month. Having achieved what he wanted on the footy field, Ellard said he wanted to give back and help some others learn at the Western Region Football League club. “It’s a bit of a challenge and a bit of change up,” he said. “I have a bit of time on my hand and I decided I wanted to use my knowledge and try and help. “I had a bit of a chat with Prokick and my dad. As long as it didn’t interfere with my footy

and the club was happy knowing that I might have to fly out to America at some stage, I was keen. And here we are.” Having come from a footballing family, which includes Richmond premiership defender Alex Rance, Ellard has always been at home on the footy field. He spent six years in the VFL, including a number of years at Werribee, and won an NEAFL premiership recently with the Southport Sharks. Ellard wants to bring some of that experience to the Roadrunners. The Roadrunners have had a women’s side since 2018. They won two games that year and three games in 2019. The 2020 season didn’t go ahead due to COVID-19.

He has already joined the side’s Facebook group and is starting to plan for the pre-season. “The vision that I have for my coaching role is to teach the women all about AFL and the different areas in AFL,” he said. “I’m wanting to create a family environment where the girls enjoy every second playing football, I can’t wait to crack in and get started. “There hasn’t been a lot of success around the club in recent years and hopefully I can help bring some. AFLW is a big thing at the moment and it’s an awesome thing to try and bring out the best in the girls. “Hopefully they’ll enjoy it and I can take their football a bit further.” For Ellard, the move into coaching comes as

he steps away from football with his eyes on a new career, punting in America Football. Ellard has joined Prokick Australia, which was developed in 2007 to help guide and transition Australian athletes to perform at the College/ NFL level. He said it was a challenge he was enjoying. “I’m trying to land a scholarship in America through Prokick,” he said. “It’s taken a couple of months to get the gist of it. “It’s a bit of a change up coming out of a professional system where I’d achieved everything I wanted to achieve. “This is about focusing on schooling as well.” Tara Murray

Waiting game for bowls By Tara Murray Werribee bowlers are playing a waiting game ahead of the Bowls Victoria pennant season. Bowls Victoria has scheduled the season to kick off on November 7, but that is dependent on COVID-19 restrictions being lifted to allow games to go ahead. Werribee Bowls’ Steve Weston said it had been tough for the bowlers not being able to hit the green. “As soon as all this is over, the first thing we will do is to get back together doing what we do best and that is – playing bowls and celebrating the fact that once again we can put real meaning into the current topical words ‘we are all in this together’. “The club and its members are so keen to get back out there and enjoy this camaraderie we have at the club, that is why we are one of the successful bowls clubs in the west. “The game involves social interaction, relative closeness during games and provides an important opportunity for those, among our senior members who live alone, to enjoy the sense of community it and the club provides. “Only through the volunteer spirit that has got the club to the stage of being within two years of its centenary will its future be secure.” Weston said they had about 100 bowlers wanting to play in the upcoming Saturday pennant competition. The Bees will have six sides, with their top side playing in division 1. Weston said most of the playing group from past season had returned. This season there will only be eight teams in each section, with less travel than previously. In the draft fixture, Werribee’s opposition is Sunbury, Moonee Valley, Bacchus Marsh, Werribee, Aberfeldie CBC, FlemingtonKensington, Glenroy and Altona Sports. Weston said they were expecting a really competitive section. “There’s not as much travel as last season,” he said. “All the sides in our division, with the exception of Bacchus Marsh, are pretty much a lot of the teams we’ve played in the past few years. “Last year was fairly close and finals spot came down to the last round. Three or four teams could have got in. “Everyone was competitive and around the one standard.” While the season is scheduled to kick off next month, Weston said they were aware it could just as easily not be the case due to COVID-19 restrictions. “Restrictions could mean we don’t get a start before Christmas,” he said. “Places like Altona Sports and Altona have pokie machines, so they even might not be allowed to open. “We’re hoping the season will go ahead if restrictions are lifted soon.” 22 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 14 October, 2020

There’s a new beginning for female football in the Ballarat region. The Ballarat Football League has announced it will have a women’s competition for the first time next season, which will be called BFLWomens, or BFLW. Previously clubs in the region had played in the AFL Goldfields women’s competition which was run by the region’s governing body. Both the BFL and neighbouring Riddell District Football League have made the decision to step away from AFL Goldfields from next season. BFL general manager Shane Anwyl said it made sense to align the women’s competition with the existing men’s, junior and netball competitions. “It will be one of the leading competitions in regional Victoria,” he said. “It will have its own identity and structure and it will help clubs be able to recruit players. “It’ll be a very strong competition.” Anwyl said two clubs had already expressed interest in joining the competition. The new competition is open to all women’s teams that were involved in the AFL Goldfields competition. Melton, Melton Centrals, Gisborne, Bacchus Marsh and Darley were all part of that competition and have been invited to the new competition. In consultation with existing clubs, the competition structure, bylaws and rules will be developed to ensure a long-term and sustainable BFLWomens. Velardo stunned with football rise New Collingwood AFLW draftee Amelia Velardo is still in disbelief that she is on an AFLW list, having played just three games of football. Velardo entered the draft as a relative unknown after the NAB League season came to an abrupt end. But Collingwood had seen enough of the Western Jet star and selected her at pick 25. Velardo said she was struggling to put into words how she’s feeling. “I’m trying to come to terms and wrap my head around the last 24 hours,” she said. “I’m rapt to be going to such a great club. I always had the goal of playing AFLW since I started playing football. “After the season was cancelled this year and with only three games under my belt, I didn’t think [I would be picked] this quickly or that early in the draft.” Velardo said she had fallen in love with the sport the minute she picked up the football

after searching for a change from basketball. “I think playing basketball for so long, that I had lost the love for it,” she said. “Footy was more prominent in my environment. I played a few school games and started the pre-season with the Jets and there was the fire in the gut and real passion. “Before that, I had only kicked the footy in the backyard with my dad and brother. “I have a real love for the game.” Velardo joined her local club, Essendon District Football League side Keilor, with many of her friends already playing there. Ambitious with her football dreams, she made a phone call to the Western Jets. “I made contact with the Jets to see whether they had any spots open to train,” she said. “They were full at first but there was an opportunity to join the girls in January. “I did quite well at the training sessions and they selected me for the squad. It was a pretty short pre-season with the Jets and I was starting

to find my feet and the game plan.” The three games were enough to get Velardo selected for the state combine and she had several interviews in the lead-up to the draft. She said she was shocked, but over the moon to be selected. It was a whirlwind few hours after the draft. “We had a Zoom meeting with the whole team and they got to know me,” she said. “Steph Chiocci gave me a call and I’m so excited to play and learn off her in an elite environment.” Many people have described Velardo as an undersized ruck, while she sees herself as a midfielder but admits she’s still to lock down a position. Velardo was one of two Jets selected. Isabelle Pritchard was taken by the Western Bulldogs at pick 16. Pritchard, a Spotswood junior, has spent most of her time in defence before moving into the midfield this year. Tara Murray

Chappy becomes a Tiger By Tara Murray New Kyneton coach Paul Chapman this year realised that he wanted to stay involved in football. Chapman started playing football when he was six, before launching an AFL career. He has been coaching ever since he retired. He started the year as Greenvale’s coach in the Essendon District Football League premier division, but stood down in June due to work, family and travel commitments. The three-time AFL premiership player said he soon realised that he wanted to stay involved with football. “I missed footy this year. I was hoping that I would miss footy. I loved coaching and loved the boys at Greenvale, but with travel and work it was too much. “I had started up my business and it was a bad time to start a business. I just wanted to make sure I got it off the ground and things are now looking good with the business. “I have moved up to the Macedon Ranges,” he said. “Being relatively close to Kyneton, I’m

looking forward to it. “I’m now excited to meet the boys and get to work.” Chapman comes to the Tigers having coached at Greenvale and previously Werribee Districts, after finishing his 280 game AFL career with Geelong and Essendon. He took Greenvale to the 2018 grand final. Chapman said the closeness of Kyneton to home and the quality of the Bendigo Football League were two of the main reasons for him signing with the club. “Nathan Thompson has a lot to do with the club, being his local club, and I caught up with him and the committee. “It sounded like an exciting time and a good time to be a part of it.” Chapman said that like Greenvale, Kyneton was focusing on bringing through young and local talent. It was something that excites Chapman. “What I loved about Greenvale was the number of local boys and most weeks we played with 25 points. “Being young and local guys at Kyneton,

hopefully I can help them improve individually and collectively. “I’m looking forward to going down to meet the boys.” Chapman said he was yet to get into the details about recruiting and training, but he said he would look to be guided by Thompson on any gaps they have. “I can’t wait to get into it.” New football manager Thompson said they were all pretty excited to have Chapman on board. Thompson was going to coach the senior and under-18 sides this year, before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. “It’s very exciting and everyone around the club is ecstatic,” Thompson said. “He’s a good fellow. He moved up here and we’ve had conversations the last couple of years about him coming to the club. “He’s a great person to have around the club.” Meanwhile the club is advertising for a netball director and A-grade coach for next season. New St Anthony’s coach Wayne Turner is looking to continue to bring youth through the Gisborne and District Cricket Association club. Turner, who has been involved in the club as a player since the 2015-16 season, has stepped up to take on the coaching role this season after the departure of former captain-coach Cam Clayton. Turner coached outdoor cricket teams a number of years ago, before turning his attention to coaching indoor sides. He has been coach of the Victorian Women’s indoor cricket team for a number years and played for both Victoria and Australia in indoor cricket. He said there were some slight differences between the two. The departure of Clayton is a big loss for the club, with him scoring 428 runs last season and taking seven wickets. They’ve also lost Alex Kerr and Conrad Farrugia, who have gone to test themselves on turf cricket. As a result, the Saints requested to drop down from the top grade McIntyre Cup and play in the Johnstone Shield. The Saints finished second bottom last season in the McIntyre Cup with just one win, coming against bottom side Riddell. Turner said they needed to keep focusing on rebuilding and bringing through younger players. “We just didn’t have the cattle,” Turner said of this season’s side. “From initial thoughts, the departures aren’t as bad as we thought they would be. “The team will be a mixture of older players and young players coming through. We’ve got a few juniors going to play at Melton. I will always encourage players to live the dream and play on turf to further their careers.” Turner said they expected to be competitive in the Johnstone Shield. He said they were still looking for players and anyone interested in playing can come down to the club once training starts. With St Anthony’s dropping down a division, the McIntyre Cup will have just seven teams this season. GDCA president Rob McIntyre said they had spoken to some teams in the Johnstone Shield about stepping up a grade, but they all felt they did not have the players to compete at that level.
