The truth is out there People are being invited to ilm their reaction to a UFO sighting for a movie being made during Victoria’s COVID-19 lockdowns. Toxic Alien Zombie Babes from Outer Space, directed by Footscray’s Gerardo Chierchia, will feature people’s self-shot footage within the ilm and in the credits. The brainchild of producer David Black, the ilm is a tongue-in-cheek sci-i/horror that pays homage to cult classics such as War of the Worlds, Plan 9 from Outer Space and Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. Black said people were being invited to use a phone to ilm their reaction to a UFO sighting, and a UFO would later be superimposed on the self-shot footage. “It’s a simple scene: how would you react if you saw a UFO? Do they scream? Council’s COVID lifeline By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong residents and businesses hit hard by the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic are being thrown a $2.5 million lifeline from council cofers. Councillors last week voted to provide the extra assistance to those hardest hit by the economic impact of COVID-19, adding to the $6.5m in direct support and payment relief that has been rolling out since April. he council last month decided to keep a further $2 million in the pockets of ratepayers by voting not to take up the two per cent rate
rise it had earlier planned to apply over the next 12 months. he latest allocation follows almost 1500 requests for assistance from people let vulnerable due to the COVID-19 crisis. Mayor Sarah Carter said the council has provided or earmarked $11 million in resources and assistance since April 2020, through the initial COVID-19 relief packages, frozen rates, in-kind support and now the expanded COVID-19 Community and Business Support packages. “During this diicult time, it is important that we continue to provide the relief packages already in place and that we support those
who are most at risk in our community – our vulnerable residents, community organisations and local traders,” she said. “Council has received a total of 1446 requests for assistance from vulnerable people, due to COVID-19 impact on our community.” he calls for help have come through a range of avenues including 180 via maternal and child health services, 700 from aged care assessments, 230 via youth services, 310 from community connectors and 26 via community centres. Cr Carter said the council’s expanded COVID-19 Community and Business Relief
Support Packages include direct funding and material support, as well as referrals to services supporting housing, mental health and family violence. Cr Carter said meal delivery has also been increased by 60 per cent. he $2.5 million package includes $1.9 million to extend existing support such as fee waivers, rate deferrals and lease and license fee reductions, along with COVID-19-related community and arts grants. he council will also be providing a $350,000 relief package for the most vulnerable families and young people and a $271,000 business relief package.

City Deal blueprint for recovery By Benjamin Millar New performing arts and aquatic centres, redevelopment of Whitten Oval and a rail tunnel from Newport beneath the Yarra River to the city are just some of the big-ticket projects outlined in a blueprint for getting Melbourne’s COVID-19 ravaged north and west back on track in the wake of the crippling pandemic. he ‘North and West Melbourne City Deal’, launched on Monday by former premiers John Brumby and Steve Bracks and current senator Scott Ryan, highlights 66 key projects
that would help boost jobs and aid the ailing economy. he 20-year plan is looking to leverage existing strengths in health, food production, manufacturing and logistics to help kickstart the recovery in one of the fastest-growing and worst-hit regions of Australia. Former premier and Williamstown MP Steve Bracks said: “Before the pandemic, 300,000 jobs were going to be needed to match the projected population growth in the region. Even more jobs will be needed now.” Footscray is one of eight key precincts identiied under the plan for unlocking new
jobs. he wider Maribyrnong area is highlighted as “a thriving cultural centre and business precinct” with signiicant health, education and housing development opportunities, while Hobsons Bay is identiied as being ripe for opportunities in employment and innovation. he Footscray Library and Community Cultural Hub (NeXT project) is identiied as a key project to help leverage existing investments and priorities for Footscray. An “outstanding opportunity” also exists to redevelop RecWest in West Footscray into
an interconnected community, sport and recreation precinct. he plan also identiies the 127-hectare Maribyrnong Defence Site as a major urban renewal opportunity. Major Hobsons Bay projects include the proposed state-of-the-art Western Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Altona Meadows, which needs an estimated $30 million for the feasibility study and development of the project. Foreshore infrastructure and a new Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre are also identiied, as well as the expansion and upgrade of Scienceworks.

Among those ined $1652 for breaching the chief health oicer directions last week was a woman breaking curfew in Hobsons Bay. She told police she had just visited a friend’s house and “didn’t think it was that serious”. An Altona Meadows man, was ined for visiting a friend because he had “got bored at home”.

Skate parks fenced off Hobsons Bay council has fenced of its skate parks ater fears that skaters ignoring stage 4 restrictions risk spreading COVID-19. Under stage 4 restrictions, people can exercise within ive kilometres of their home once a day and for one hour, but outdoor sports facilities are closed. People could be ined $1652 for breaching lockdown rules. Skate parks, outdoor itness stations and outdoor playgrounds were closed during both stage 3 and 4 restrictions, under chief health oicer directions. Despite signs advising of the closures, members of the community have made multiple reports to the council of skate parks still being used. In response, the council has erected temporary fencing around skate parks at HD Graham Reserve in Altona Meadows, McCormack Park in Laverton and Newport
Skate Park. Hobsons Bay mayor Colleen Gates said she understood the restrictions were tough for young people but they were necessary for public health. “Similar to many metropolitan councils, we have received complaints from concerned residents about skate parks still being used in stage 4 restrictions,” she said. “To comply with the state government’s regulations, temporary fencing has been erected to restrict access. “We know lockdown is tough, particularly for young people but we all need to follow the rules to reduce the risk of the virus spreading. “We will reopen the skate parks as soon as it is safe to do so within the guidelines of the state government.”

New charges over chemical ire By Benjamin Millar he man who allegedly orchestrated the illegal dumping of millions of litres of dangerous chemicals in the Tottenham warehouse that erupted in the 2018 ire has been charged with recklessly placing people in danger of serious injury. WorkSafe has charged Graham Leslie White, 59, with recklessly engaging in conduct that placed or may have placed people in danger of serious injury, and for failing to ensure that the Tottenham site was safe and without risks to health. he charges are among 26 that White is

Taxpayers are likely to be forced to pick up the multi-million dollar bill for the clean-up of the site, which is yet to begin despite almost two years passing since the blaze. WorkSafe alleges that White failed to take all reasonable precautions at each site to prevent any ire or explosion involving dangerous goods in his ownership, control or possession. “WorkSafe further alleges at each site White failed to take reasonable precautions to prevent leakage of dangerous goods and failed to take reasonable precautions to prevent damage to property or danger to the public incurred by an accident involving
dangerous goods,” a spokesman said. “White also faces three aggravated charges with WorkSafe further alleging that White knew, or ought to have known, that each of his failings would likely endanger the safety or health of another person, property or the environment.” he new charges come on top of 55 charges under the Dangerous Goods Act announced earlier this year, consisting of 11 ofences for each of the four warehouses White occupied in Epping and one in Campbellield. he latest matters are listed for a iling hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on September 14. 12458706-CG35-20

An Altona North family-owned-and-operated psychology clinic inundated with clients says Victorians could beneit from New Zealand’s buddy system during lockdown. Hobsons Bay Psychology owner and clinical psychologist, Michelle Gopold, says the practise doesn’t have enough psychologists for the current number of referrals. She said although the lockdown was needed, it had resulted in people struggling more with their mental health. “With the current lockdown and the restrictions, the social supports and other
coping mechanisms that involve getting out of the house are taken away,” Ms Gopold said. She said New Zealand’s buddy system, which had allowed a person living alone to visit one other residence during its lockdown, was a strategy the state government should look at. “I actually think that would be a fantastic idea – to allow one person to see another person – because we know that one of the biggest protective factors in mental health is that social connection and that social support,” Ms Gopold said. “Oten there’s more of a risk of an increase in suicide when someone’s feeling that they don’t have anyone, that there is no one out there, that
they don’t have that connection and they don’t have that face-to-face contact. “From a mental health point of view, I think that would be a very healthy strategy because it helps mitigate that risk a little bit if you are able to have one person over. “here is a mental health crisis at the moment. Our clinic is inundated with referrals and we just cannot ind psychologists to help meet the demand. “hat’s not just with our clinic. Masks can take a mental toll As the second wave of coronavirus sweeps across Victoria and mandatory mask use is enforced across the state, a Victoria University psychology expert is warning of the challenges these changes can trigger. Melbourne and Mitchell Shire residents have lived with compulsory face covering laws since July 22, while the rest of the state has now been ordered to follow suit as part of desperate measures to slow the spread of the deadly pandemic. VU clinical psychologist Dr Glen Hosking said while the laws are well intentioned they can also present people with some unexpected psychological hurdles. “his pandemic continues to impact every area of our lives; physically, socially, economically and psychologically, so it’s OK to take some time to adjust while complying with this new stage – that is a completely normal response,” he said. Dr Hosking said wearing masks during social exchanges can be challenging for people, given how much we use our face to convey emotions and to reciprocate a smile, so people now need to ind new ways to interact and respond. “Maybe we need to perfect a friendly nod or a wave, just a small gesture to acknowledge each other,” he said. “I also think we have to remember that anyone with a hearing or vision disability will ind wearing a mask especially diicult; being mindful of this is beneicial for the whole community.” Dr Hosking noted that some children might be feeling unnerved by seeing adults wear masks, so it is helpful to encourage candid conversations about how children are coping. One way of helping to adjust to challenging changes, according to Dr Hosking, is to keep up or adopt healthy routines such as regular exercise. “Due to the new rules, there might a tendency to stop exercising, but I’d encourage everyone to keep up your itness routines,” he said. “here is scientiic proof that regular physical activity has a positive impact on our mental wellbeing, so in times like this, it’s even more important that we keep moving.”

Like their colleagues across the state, doctors and nurses at Northern and Sunshine hospitals have been at the forefront of the ight against coronavirus since the start. hese are their messages to the community. Dr Megan Robb Northern Health Director of Emergency How has COVID-19 changed your job? here has been a lot of change in the way we work due to COVID-19. his has included undertaking additional training and implementing new models of care in the emergency department. We work in full PPE [personal protective equipment] which is hot and everything takes much longer to do. One of the biggest challenges is the PPE makes it harder to communicate and develop a personal connection with our patients. We all struggle with this aspect of our job at the moment. he pandemic has brought us closer as a team … it has been a challenging time but we’re very proud of our staf. What’s your message to the community? Our staf on the front line are working extremely hard to care for our patients and help protect our community. We stay here for you, please stay home for us. It’s crucial that everyone continues to maintain 1.5 metres distance and wears mandatory face coverings. Maintain strict hand hygiene – wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser. And please, be kind and support each other – we are in this together. What’s the one thing you would like the community to better understand about COVID-19? COVID-19 doesn’t discriminate. It can afect anyone so we all need to be vigilant. Healthcare workers don’t consider themselves heroes. We are the last line of defence and need all to be involved in the ight against COVID-19.

Top marks for VU teaching model By Benjamin Millar Victoria University’s “block model” of teaching students one subject at a time has helped to deliver the western suburbs uni the state’s highest-ranking for student engagement, according to a leading university guide. VU took out the top spot for Victoria for undergraduate learner engagement in the 2021 Good Universities Guide. he annual ratings ranked VU as the fourth most successful university in Australia and the best in the state for the proportion of students reporting they are engaged with their studies and institution, have a sense of belonging, and

interact with other students inside and outside the classroom. VU vice-chancellor Peter Dawkins said the results can be traced to the success of the Australia-irst block model of intensively teaching one subject at a time in small class groups. “We know that our block model leads to stronger student engagement and better student outcomes,” he said.
“I am delighted that our reimagined and transformative model of teaching and learning has been externally validated.” VU was also in the top 20 per cent of Australian universities for social equity, measuring the proportion of domestic students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. he university also rated highly for the proportion of domestic students who are the irst in their families to go to university. VU’s postgraduate subjects in tourism, hospitality, personal services and sport & recreation took out top spot nationally for skills development and teaching quality. Creative arts undergraduate subjects were
highly rated for skills development, overall education experience and learner engagement, earning the highest result in Victoria and second-highest nationally for skills development. Humanities, culture and society postgraduate subjects inished top in Victoria for skills development and top nationally for learning resources. Learner engagement in agriculture and environmental studies undergraduate subjects was rated irst in Victoria and second in Australia. he rankings coincided with VU also making its irst entrance into the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), a list of the world’s top 1000 universities.

Station plaza plans unveiled A pedestrian plaza would be built between the platforms at North Williamstown train station under Hobsons Bay council’s plans for the Ferguson Street precinct. he state government last month announced the rail line would be lowered under Ferguson Street as part of the level crossing removal. he Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) has earmarked the eastern station building for demolition. As reported by Star Weekly, Williamstown Crossing Group spokesman Lorenzo de Falco said the community clearly wanted to preserve
North Williamstown train station. he council this month released its vision for the station surrounds and is lobbying the government for a funding partnership to implement its plans. he council wants both station buildings to be retained, upgraded and repurposed for community use. A central plaza would tie the station precinct together, with new seating and community spaces. Level Crossing Removal Project program director Tony Hedley said only the main
station building would be retained. “While a smaller station building needs to be removed to accommodate the rail corridor, we will retain the main station building on the city-bound platform,” he said. “he design for the new station will consider how the main station building can be used to protect and celebrate its heritage.” Construction at Ferguson Street will begin in early 2021 and the level crossing will be removed in 2022.
A Hobsons Bay councillor has issued an SOS rallying cry to residents. Cr Peter Hemphill has launched a campaign to Save our Station, urging the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) not to bulldoze the east building at North Williamstown train station. As reported by Star Weekly, Williamstown Crossing Group spokesman, Lorenzo de Falco, said people clearly wanted to retain both station buildings. Cr Hemphill said it was appalling the LXRP had “thumbed its nose at residents”. His campaign follows the release of Hobsons Bay council’s plans for the Ferguson Street precinct, which include a plaza between the station platforms. “he LXRP has been aware of council’s position that it supported the community’s wish to retain both station buildings,” Cr Hemphill said. “It has not engaged with the council on seeking ways to retain the building and has instead worked behind the scenes to justify its position to bulldoze the building. “Rather than talk to us about solutions to retain the east railway building at North Williamstown station, they have gone out to hire heritage consultants to argue their case for why it should be pulled down. “It sends a message to the Williamstown community the LXRP does not give two hoots about heritage.” LXRP program director Tony Hedley said the “smaller station building needs to be removed to accommodate the rail corridor”. Australia Post reduces frequency of letter deliveries Australia Post has temporarily ramped up its parcel delivery eforts and reduced the frequency of letter deliveries across six postcodes in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Brimbank. he postal service has announced it will be delivering letters to residents every second day in all or part of the postcodes 3024, 3027, 3028, 3029, 3030 and 3038. hese postcodes cover suburbs including Altona Meadows, Derrimut, Hoppers Crossing, Keilor Downs, Keilor Lodge, Laverton, Mambourin, Mount Cottrell, Point Cook, Seabrook, Taylors Lakes, Tarneit, Truganina, Werribee and Werribee South.

Australia Post is receiving, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In Victoria, the number of online purchases increased by 96 per cent between April and July, when compared to the same time last year. Australia Post general manager deliveries south, Shane Plant, said that signiicant reductions in light capacity, government directions and additional safety measures introduced to protect postal staf had contributed to a delay in delivering some parcels. Mr Plant said delivering letters every second business day “will free up some of our people

Drug-affected driver jailed By Goya Dmytryshchak An ice-afected driver has been sentenced to seven and a half years’ jail over a high-speed crash that caused catastrophic injuries to two men at Altona. Carlyle Barbara, 58, pleaded guilty in the County Court to two charges of negligently causing serious injury and driving while suspended. he court heart, that at the time of the crash, Barbara was serving a community correction order following a 10- month jail term for a 2012
head-on collision that killed the other driver. On October 18, 2017, there were roadworks on the outbound lanes of the West Gate Freeway, between Williamstown Road and Millers Road at Altona. he speed limit had been reduced from 100km/h to 40km/h and the far let lane was closed. One of the victims, Phillip Smith, had stopped his vehicle in the emergency lane ater it overheated. By chance, his close friend, Modesto Calandrelli, was passing and recognised Mr Smith’s distinctive Ford Mustang. He stopped

Snake sightings tipped to rise Snake season is just around the corner and this year’s will be a little diferent due to COVID-19. Stewart Gatt aka Stewy the Snake Catcher expects more snake reports with more people staying at home. “In previous years, most people are at work or at school during the day, which means most snakes go about their business undetected around the homes, but this year we are expecting a lot more calls during the day,” he says. “In the last two weeks, we have already attended to more than 15 call-outs, with catches including eastern brown snakes, copperheads, tiger snakes and blue tongue lizards.” Snakes don’t hibernate but do something called brumation, Stewy says.

have time to call a snake catcher to come and remove it safely. “Snakes are nature’s pest control. One adult snake could potentially control around 10,000 rats or mice a year.” If you see a snake in your yard, Stewy’s advice is to slowly move away, remove any children or pets and call a snake catcher. “If you are walking in the park and you come across a snake, you need to simply give it a wide berth,” Stewy says. Hobsons Bay council is calling for $1.5 million in state government funding for a separate crossing over the Queen Street bridge, enabling pedestrians and cyclists to safely cross Laverton Creek at Altona Meadows. Last July, the council, pedestrians and cyclists launched a campaign calling on the government to incorporate a foot bridge in its Queen Street bridge strengthening project. More than 1000 postcards calling for safe pedestrian and cyclist access over the Queen Street road bridge were handed to Altona MP Jill Hennessy. But the campaign fell on deaf ears. Up to 20,000 vehicles use the bridge each day, but pedestrians, cyclists or those with wheelchairs and prams have to take a 1.6 kilometre of-road detour across Laverton Creek. Deputy mayor Sandra Wilson said many cyclists and pedestrians were taking a risk to cross the road bridge. “People on bikes and foot currently need to make a considerable detour to safely cross the river downstream, with many choosing instead to take the risky shortcut and use the narrow shoulder on the road bridge, crossing alongside cars, trucks and buses,” she said. Mayor Colleen Gates said the council had produced designs for a shared-use cyclist and pedestrian bridge, adjacent to the road bridge, that is 60 metres long and 3.5 metres wide. “We all pay taxes to the state government and deserve to see those taxes invested back into state level infrastructure in our immediate area,” she said. he council is calling for the funding to be allocated to the shared bridge in October’s budget. Plaza with big screen touted for Aviation station A plaza with a big screen in front of a lawn area could be built at Aviation train station in Laverton, under a proposal by Hobsons Bay council. he Aviation Road Level Crossing Precinct Plan was this month adopted by the council. It follows the level crossing removal at Aviation Road, which was completed in September by moving the road onto a new bridge over the railway line. he bridge has a pedestrian walkway and dedicated bike lanes, and a new road connecting to the nearby Royal Australian Air Force base.
Pedestrian connections for commuters to the nearby Aircrat station will be completed in second stage works, which will align with level crossing removal works at Werribee and Cherry streets in Werribee to minimise train service disruptions. he council is pushing for elements of its Aviation Road Level Crossing Precinct Plan to be included in stage two works. Features of the plan include a station plaza with a large lat screen display to support summer events. he council is also pushing to formalise 100 spaces promised for a station carpark,
end-of-trip cyclist facilities and a kiss and ride point. Earlier this month, the state government announced Aircrat station was one of 11 metropolitan stations being upgraded. he station was ranked the second-worst in Victoria in the RACV’s latest On Track survey, with crowding, diiculty inding a car park and inadequate shelter cited as the top concerns. A state government spokesperson said works were still in the planning phase with details to be inalised. Plans for a Laverton plaza have been revealed.

Jovic steps up for Collingwood By Tara Murray Collingwood Magpies midcourter Molly Jovic is taking every chance thrown at her as she steps onto the court in the Suncorp Super Netball competition. From being a temporary injury replacement to a full squad member and then best on court in just her third game, Jovic has looked right at home among the best players in the world. For the 24-year-old, just being part of the Magpies team this season was a shock, ater deciding to step back from high-level netball last year.

“I played two years with Vic Fury and last year I was probably at that point. I had got my degree and got a job and I was working full-time and trying to do ANL [Australian Netball League] as well,” she said. “It’s all ater hours and I found it really challenging giving my time to work and also netball. I decided to have a year of to see if I miss it and see if I want to give it another go. “I ended up having the irst few months of pre-season of and then an injury came up with the Tassie Magpies ANL side and I got a phone call asking if I’d like to help out with them … and I thought why not. “It’s a bit of a shock that I’m here now.” For the City West Falcons gun, the decision proved to be the right one with the Collingwood Magpies, who are aligned with the Tassie Magpies, seeing what Jovic could do on court. It led to her being signed as an injury replacement for Australian player Kelsey Browne. Jovic thought she would just be with the side until Browne was right to play, but a knee

injury to cross-code star Ash Brazill, resulted in her being signed for the rest of the season. “I was just stoked that I was going to have an opportunity to train with the likes of Kesley Browne, Madi Browne and Ash Brazill. Obviously it was devastating that Braz got injured as well. “Sometimes I was inding myself thinking I’m actually training with these amazing athletes, it’s incredible now that I’m getting to play alongside them as well.” With COVID-19 shutting down training just before the start of the season, Jovic said she was determined to do whatever it took to keep playing. “We would go from training really intense with your teammates to taking home some equipment from the Holden Centre and just trying to keep ticking over, until we heard something about a potential season,” she said.

When the talk started coming about hubs, I was absolutely going to be on board for that as it’s potentially my only opportunity to play at this level. “If that’s what I have to do to get a go, I’ll move my life to Queensland.” Having already stepped down to part-time work when she joined Collingwood, Jovic is now having a career break so she can follow her dream of playing netball. Jovic said while there had been some challenges living in the hub, it also had its beneits. “It has been really good for us as a team, we’ve gotten to know people a lot faster than you normally would in a normal training environment.” Among those in the hub, is Collingwood assistant coach Nicole Richardson.
Richardson has coached Jovic for many years, irstly at Altona representative netball and then at the City West Falcons. Jovic said it was “pretty cool” to have someone involved in the team who she’s known nearly her whole life. he condensed season has changed how clubs use their players and bench, resulting in younger and newer players being given more opportunities than before. Jovic has played in every match so far, as was named best on court in her third match. She said that knowing the calibre of her teammates, she wasn’t expecting to get the opportunities she has. “I was deinitely in shock [when she made her debut]. I think [coach] Rob [Wright] called me on as a rolling sub within the irst quarter. “I thought it would be a bit later in the game than in the irst quarter, so it was a bit of a surreal moment. “It was amazing to even get the opportunity to step onto the court at all.” Jovic has split her time playing the three midcourt positions, which has taken her out of her comfort zone. At the Falcons, she is predominantly a centre. At ANL, she normally plays centre or wing attack. She’s played on a number of international level players, including gun New Zealander Laura Langman. Jovic admits there are times where she’s had to take a breath and take in what is happening around her. For the Magpies, making inals is the aim. “We want to make inals and give it a good shot, just because it’s going to be a year to remember for everyone. We want to head out on top,” Jovic said. While it’s been a crazy ride to get a spot in the world’s best competition, Jovic is keen to stay in it for more than one year. “Absolutely, if an opportunity arises in the future, I would love to do that.”
