Travelling in style “Accidental blogger” Debasree Das Mall, may be grounded because of the coronavirus pandemic, but her fashion blogs are inding new audiences. The Manor Lakes woman, Mrs Singapore India 2014 and Mrs Asia International 2015, said she started the blog after moving to Australian about four years ago because she loved travelling and style. She said working full-time as a business head at a multinational company headquartered in Hong Kong, had given her plenty of opportunities to travel before the COVID-19 pandemic. “My job allows me to travel the length and breadth of the globe and I just wanted to share these travel stories to the world at large,” Debasree said. “Having lived in Africa, Moscow and Singapore, I have some amazing and fond memories of these places that I still keep sharing through my blogs.” Debasree also models part-time and is a monthly content contributor to G’day India magazine. “The best thing about blogging is working with local businesses and giving them a platform to showcase their brand,” she said. Debasree said that although the pandemic has halted her ability to travel overseas, the fashion segment of her blog “is doing really amazing”. “I had an amazing few months working with both international and Australian brands,” she said. he grandson of a woman living in a Hoppers Crossing aged care facility is concerned the public is not being made aware of the extent of COVID-19 cases among the centre’s residents and staf. Kodei Mulcahy said his 77-year-old grandmother, Sandra, lived at Mecwacare’s John Atchison Centre. On July 29, the Department of Health and Human Services reported that two cases of coronavirus had been linked to the home. However, Mr Mulcahy said there had since been at least ive deaths and dozens more cases of the virus diagnosed at the facility, which the wider public have not been made aware of. Mr Mulcahy said that his grandmother had been diagnosed with the virus, but that she seemed to be “doing better”. Star Weekly has seen emails marked “conidential” and signed by the Mecwacare chief executive Michele Lewis which have been sent to relatives of residents of the aged care centre since late July. One email, dated July 28, said three residents and one staf member at the home had tested positive for COVID-19. On August 2, an email stated 17 residents from Block A at the facility had tested positive. On August 4, an email from the Mecwacare chief executive said 11 more residents had returned a positive test for the virus. On August 6, three residents had passed away due to the virus, and eight residents remained in hospital. On August 14, an email stated: “I am deeply sorry to inform you that another two of our treasured residents has succumbed to the coronavirus”. Mr Mulcahy said he believed workers who attended the centre, such as food delivery people, should know about the number of positive COVID-19 cases at the facility so they can take measures to protect themselves. Star Weekly contacted Mecwacare for comment. A Mecwacare spokesperson said: “he information you have been given is not correct”. As of Monday, there were 2075 active coronavirus cases linked to aged care across Victoria.

Active virus cases start to fall By Alesha Capone Wyndham continues to have the most active COVID-19 cases in Victoria as overall case numbers show signs of stablising across the state. According to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the municipality had recorded 864 active cases of the virus as of Monday, down from 942 a week earlier. Brimbank recorded the second-highest number of active cases with 784. he 3029 and 3030 postcodes also topped

the list of Victorian postcodes for virus cases on Friday. he 3029 area (Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina) recorded 464 cases, while 3030 (Werribee, Point Cook, Werribee South and Quandong) recorded 330 cases. he 3024 postcode (Mambourin, Manor Lakes, Mount Cottrell and Wyndham Vale) recorded 106 cases, and 3027 (Williams Landing) 31 cases. An outbreak at Baptcare Wyndham Lodge Community in Werribee has been linked to 131 cases, while 83 cases have now been linked

to Glendale Aged Care Facility in Werribee. he Linfox warehouse in Truganina has been linked to 59 cases. DHHS is also investigating cases linked to Werribee Mercy Hospital. Meanwhile, last Monday, police attended an address in Wyndham where they found ive people in a garage drinking and smoking. All ive were issued with an infringement for breaching the Chief Health Oicer’s pandemic regulations. On Friday, Woolworths announced it has expanded its contactless drive-through service

to almost 30 more stores in Victoria, to help make social distancing easier for customers when picking up their online orders. Stores in Altona North, Hogans Corner, Hoppers Crossing, Werribee Central, Werribee Plaza and Williamstown are ofering the click and collect services. Customers conirm when they’ve arrived in the store’s carpark via the Woolworths app or SMS link, and store employees will pack the order into the vehicle. All drive-through orders must be placed through Woolworths.com.au with a minimum value of $30.

Helping hand for clinics Inventor and designer Joe Ferlazzo is making touch-free surgical glove removers for local medical centres. Mr Ferlazzo is part of Grow With Joe, a group of volunteers who upscale recycled materials into useful items. He is also a driving force behind the Wyndham Repair Café, which was based at Envision in Werribee before it closed its Wyndham operations earlier this year. While the search for the café’s new headquarters continues, Mr Ferlazzo has been thinking of ways to help the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr Ferlazzo said he did not come up with the idea for the glove-removers, but has modiied a design he irst saw on the internet. he glove remover can be attached to a surface, such as a bench or trolley, and allows a person to hook their disposable glove onto the end for hands-free removal.

Mr Ferlazzo is using a 3D-printer to manufacture the plastic glove removers at his Werribee South residence and is keen to donate them to medical centres in Wyndham which would like one. He has already supplied two GP clinics, in Truganina and Werribee, with a glove remover. hrough the Grow with Joe website, Mr Ferlazzo is also ofering to donate a glove remover to a medical centre of someone’s choice, if they purchase 20 ear-protectors (which are designed to prevent pain behind the ears of people wearing a face mask). “All I want to do is get out and help people,” Mr Ferlazzo said. Police have charged a 25-year-old St Albans woman as part of an ongoing investigation into a series of shoplifting incidents in Hoppers Crossing and Werribee. Police executed warrants at residential properties in St Albans and Deer Park on August 7, seizing products including baby formula and cosmetics valued at more than $150,000. The St Albans woman has been charged with possessing proceeds of crime and handling stolen goods.

Array of fun at libraries Wyndham council’s libraries may be closed, but they are ofering a host of free activities and resources on the internet. Wyndham City mayor Josh Gilligan said the libraries ofered an online world of learning, accessible to everyone. “We are running programs for all ages, from babies to adults, and everyone can take part in the online events,” Cr Gilligan said. “Parents can view Rhyme Time hosted by the familiar faces from our libraries whatever time of day suits; teenagers can play online games safely with Gamer Den and adults can enjoy the book club and language café – and that’s just a glimpse of the array of educational events available from our online library services.” Rhyme Time is a recurring event which runs

Police are appealing for public assistance following a sexual assault which occurred on July 31 between 8.45pm and 10pm in a public toilet block at Soldiers Reserve, Werribee, near the College Road entrance. Police have been told a woman, aged in her 30s, was led into the toilet block by an unknown man, who committed the assault. Detectives are urging anyone in the area who has CCTV footage, or who was driving through the area that night and has dash-cam footage, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Sky safari plan for zoo

Land rezoned for housing

By Alesha Capone Plans for an $83.83 million expansion of Werribee Open Range Zoo include a 1.6-kilometre treetop sky safari, which will give visitors views of the entire facility. he $27.76 million treetop attraction would be constructed as a gondola system, stretching across the zoo, with a capacity to accommodate 1200 people per hour (one way). New details of the planned expansion were revealed by zoo director Glen Holland during a Committee for Wyndham meeting last week, held via the online platform Zoom. he plans are still in the early stages and subject to funding approval from the state government. Mr Holland said the sky safari would provide 360-degree views of the zoo savannah, the You Yangs, Melbourne’s CBD and the bay beyond. he zoo’s expansion plans also include a 400-seat Water Hole Cafe with indoor and outdoor areas, providing diners with views of some animals. he cafe will serve as a prelude to the elephant sanctuary walking loop. As previously reported, as part of the expansion, Zoos Victoria’s herd of Asian Elephants will be relocated to Werribee, where they will live in a 22-hectare open range, naturalistic setting. A new walking trail will guide visitors through an immersive large landscape where the elephants roam. Mr Holland said a new carpark with 1000 spaces may also be built at Werribee zoo. An economic impact assessment completed by Ernst & Young, for Zoos Victoria, has found that the expansion – once it is fully operational – will create about 199 new direct and indirect jobs across the state. Mr Holland said that ideally, the zoo’s

Up to 240 new residences could be constructed in Point Cook, ater Wyndham council voted in favour of rezoning a 15.12 hectare section of land in the suburb. Wyndham council last week approved an amendment to rezone 315 Boardwalk Boulevard from a Farming Zone to a General Residential Zone. he council also voted to apply a new schedule to the Development Plan Overlay on the land, which has been vacant since the 1960s, “to facilitate future orderly residential development”. he council will send the amendment to the Planning Minister for approval. Under the amendment, up to 12.41 hectares of the land could be used to develop housing, while 3.94 hectares of drainage reserves along Boardwalk Boulevard could include a wetland area. he council received 10 objections to the rezoning of the land, for reasons including the impact of increased traic; a loss of open space; and amenity impacts on adjoining dwellings. A submission from the nearby Featherbrook College said there was an “urgent need” for a community leisure centre, including a public pool, in Point Cook and suggested a 50-metre pool be built at the Boardwalk Boulevard site. However, an independent planning panel recommended that the rezoning amendment be adopted by council.

Grant boost for Galvin Park By Alesha Capone he state government has announced $1 million in funding to help build a new soccer pavilion at Werribee’s Galvin Park. Werribee MP Tim Pallas, who announced the funding on Friday, said the money would come from the state government’s $68 million Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program. growing number of people in Werribee keen to get involved in sport and recreation,” Mr Pallas. Mr Pallas acknowledged Wyndham council for its commitment and inancial contribution to the Galvin Park project. he $3.8 million redevelopment of the Galvin Park soccer pavilion began last month.

According to the council, the project will be completed over two stages, with stage one including site mobilisation, early carpark works and construction of the irst part of the pavilion. Construction of stage two, which is expected to begin in October, will include the demolition of the existing pavilion and construction of the second part of the new pavilion. he project is expected to be completed in mid-2021 however, construction timelines may be afected by COVID-19 restrictions. Mayor Josh Gilligan said the soccer pavilion redevelopment was the ith stage of the Galvin Park Master Plan rollout. “In 2018 council demolished the reserve’s

old tennis pavilion and built a new $2 million sports club and community pavilion,” Cr Gilligan said. “Last year, council invested a further $1.7 million into the facility for a new oval.” Wyndham’s sports development portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard, said the project would provide a new home for the Werribee City Soccer Club and the many community groups and schools that currently use the facility. “he Galvin Park soccer pavilion will service four soccer pitches and will provide another great asset in Werribee that will help boost participation in sport,” Cr Maynard said.

A cast of colourful and creative characters is popping up on a patch of lawn in Point Cook. Resident Jade Anderson, who is also a grade prep teacher at Tarneit Rise Primary School, started the “Spoonville” village near the corner of Boardwalk Boulevard and Featherbrook Drive. Aterwards, she posted on a local Facebook page to encourage people to put their own spoon character at the site. he idea of Spoonville villages, a trend which has taken of across Australia and around the world, is to bring cheer to communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. People are invited to decorate wooden spoons and install them at Spoonville villages, which are oten located on nature strips or in open spaces. Ms Anderson said she started the Spoonville in Point Cook for local children. “I know that for children, staying indoors can be really hard and I wanted to create something fun for them to see on their walks, and something for them to contribute to if they wished,” she said. “Something that hopefully brings a little bit of joy in a time where everything is so uncertain. “I am not sure now if it is for the kids or myself though as I get so much joy out of watching Spoonville Point Cook grow and watching children stop to look or add their own spoon.” Spoonville villages are also popping up in suburbs including Tarneit and Altona North. Revamp ideas sought Preliminary designs for an upgrade of Possy Newland Reserve in Little River include a redeveloped basketball court and a revamped play space. Wyndham council is calling for the public to submit ideas for the reserve’s revamp, which will also include improvements to the picnic and barbecue area. he existing skate park, path network and toilet block will be retained. Wyndham’s family friendly city portfolio holder, Cr Mia Shaw, said the completed upgrade would provide Little River residents with the perfect space to exercise, play, socialise with friends or relax. “Over the past decade, a growing body of research has shown that a high-quality network of public open space has direct beneits for

Family thanks hospital he father of a young Point Cook girl who sufered an unexpected cardiac arrest last year, has thanked the paediatrics and emergency teams at Werribee Mercy Hospital for saving her life. Just weeks ater the paediatrics ward was oicially opened last August, Mark and JunJie Aves took their inluenza-stricken daughter Calista to the hospital. hree hours ater arriving at Werribee Mercy, seven-year-old Calista experienced a cardiorespiratory arrest. “We were told at irst that she was showing symptoms of pneumonia and further infection, but we weren’t prepared for the frightening events that were soon to follow,” Mr Aves said. “he doctors performed chest compressions for 28 minutes, and twice during that period her heart stopped beating. “he teams at Werribee Mercy Hospital deinitely saved her precious life.” While the doctors and nurses at Mercy Health kept Calista alive, another battle was soon to begin. Four hours ater her cardiac arrest, Calista was transferred to the Royal Children’s Hospital where she required artiicial heart and lung support, known medically as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation

(ECMO). ECMO is the technique of providing prolonged cardiac and respiratory support to patients, oten children, whose heart and lungs are failing to work as they should. Calista spent two months recuperating at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Towards the end of last year, Calista was able to gradually return to school, attending classes for one-to-two hours a day as she built her strength up. Calista andher family have since visited Werribee Mercy Hospital to thank the staf for their eforts in saving her life. Paediatrics ward nurse unit manager Simone Danaher said all the hospital’s team members were proud of the role they played in helping Calista. “It was a moving and memorable occasion to see her returning to good health ater such a frightening experience,” Ms Danaher said. “It is extremely rare for a child to present with lu and then arrest as she did. Calista was fortunate to have the arrest within our emergency ward, surrounded by skilled practitioners.” he paediatrics ward at Werribee Mercy Hospital is this month celebrating its irst anniversary. Upgrade for town centre

SES blood drive By Alesha Capone Victorian State Emergency Service members and volunteers are putting in a red-hot efort to boost blood donations to the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood organisation over three months. Since June, 147 individual VICSES members have made 251 blood donations to the Red Cross, as part of the Emergency Services Blood Challenge. he annual challenge, which runs until August 31, involves emergency services organisations across the state participating in

a friendly competition to see which service can make the most blood donations. he SES Wyndham West Unit controller, Cliford Heri, is an active blood donor. Mr Heri said although the VICSES has a smaller number of members than other emergency services, members have been doing well in this year’s challenge. “We are proud to say we have done our bit and are punching above our weight,” he said. Mr Heri, a former Red Cross volunteer, said he usually donated blood and plasma at the Lifeblood Werribee Donor Centre. He described the staf there – who follow a

set of pandemic health and safety regulations – as “very friendly and capable”. “I’d encourage anyone who is thinking about donating blood, but not sure, to give it a go,” Mr Heri said. “It’s such a simple thing but it can make a world of diference to people who need blood. “It seems scary, and I personally don’t like needles, but I haven’t had any challenges there.” Mr Heri said that as a bonus, blood donors were always given something to eat ater making a donation. “My favourite is the fruitcake,” he said. he state government has announced $500,000 in funding to upgrade the Tarneit town centre. he funding, allocated under the Suburban Activity Centre grant program, will support projects such as minor infrastructure upgrades and maintenance, community activities and local business activation. he grant is part of a $6 million investment in suburban and neighbourhood centres announced by the state government as part of the building works stimulus initiative. Melton, Boronia, Reservoir, Lilydale and Noble Park will also share in the $3 million program. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said: “his investment will enhance community cohesion, revitalise local business and maintain the great character of the local neighbourhoods.” he state government has also encouraged councils across Melbourne to apply for funding through the Neighbourhood Activity Centre Renewal Fund, which will provide grants of up to $100,000 to stimulate business activity, support the local economy and improve public amenity and accessibility during the coronavirus pandemic. he state government will work with councils, businesses and the community sector to deliver the initiatives. Agency with family values Gary Singh has been a busy man since arriving in Australia in 2009 as an international student, gaining his advanced diploma in business management while working as a waiter and other basic jobs to keep body and soul together. Gary recognised he’d arrived in the land of endless opportunity and, by 2014, began his real estate career – and never looked back. In his irst year, he honed his negotiation skills and, through hard work and focus, received a leading agent award for his efforts across three Sydney suburbs, and found himself in charge of multi-million dollar deals and achieving many record sales. By 2016, with his wife, three kids and a sister in tow, Gary was ready for a change and moved to Wyndham. The family built their own home in 2019 and settled down as Manor Lakes locals. Gary says to date, he’s done one billion dollars in real estate transactions as he’s stepped through his career, gaining knowledge, experience and steadily building a proven track record of success. ”Some say negotiation is skill, for me its an art!” he says. A commitment to community When Sanjay Kandel arrived in Werribee from his native Nepal, he says he felt right at home, with the surrounding farmland reminding him of his upbringing in Nepal’s farming community. More than that, Sanjay got a job he loved, working hard at Crust Gourmet Pizza Bar, learning the ropes and becoming familiar with what customers look for in a good pizza. He eventually became owner of Crust Werribee eight months ago, just as the pandemic began. He and his team of Emma Simak, Shashank Chintamani and Soni Shrestha share a passion for excellence, and put everything into providing pizza and other tasty items that ensure it’s “love at irst bite” for everyone who comes through their door or gets a home delivery. “It’s our well-oiled teamwork that makes work here a pleasure, and our pizzas, salad bowls, pasta and other treats show the efort we all put in – as do the smiles on our customers’ faces,” Sanjay says. “And the fact that we use our own house-made dough for our pizza crusts adds considerably to the taste and quality of a Crust pizza – and we ofer gluten-free and low-carb bases as well.” Sanjay has a strong feel for community, wanting to contribute where he can. “It’s always been about community for me, getting to know our customers and reaching out to introduce others throughout the area to the Crust way. Our aim is to have everyone in Wyndham taste our food within ive years – it will be a real thrill when we succeed, and I believe we will.” As part of Sanjay’s commitment to locals, Crust ofers a 25 per cent discount to all on-duty emergency personnel, such as police, ireys and ambos.
