Luana is using her passion for fashion and design to give back to the community. The Aintree teenager has been busy sewing up a storm, creating handmade masks for residents and local organisations. In a month, she had made about 600 masks and she recently decided to donate about $450 worth of masks to a local health service. “I always wanted to give to the Sunbury community because my dad is a pastor of a church there and everyone is so friendly,” Luana, 14, said. “So I thought, why not make those masks for the people who need them? I have all this free time and it is a great opportunity.” Luana has also donated her colourful masks to churches throughout Melbourne and to nurses working on the front line. “Just being able to sew and know it is for a good cause makes me happy,” she said. “I have always loved sewing when I was growing up, especially with my grandmother.” Jessica Micallef

Virus numbers give hope By Ewen McRae Melton has recorded 40 new case of COVID-19 in the past week, as numbers begin to stabilise across the state. he Melton municipality passed 500 active cases on Sunday, with 506 cases now active in the community. here have been 933 cases of the virus in Melton since the pandemic began. Djerriwarrh Health also notched up more than 20,000 tests at its drive-in testing site in Melton last week. Moorabool has just eight active cases of

the virus, with 25 in total since the pandemic began. On Sunday, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced that the state of emergency for Victoria would be extended for a further four weeks, until September 13, and urged the community to continue following the rules to drive down virus case numbers. “We will beat this virus – and extending the state of emergency ensures we have all the tools we need for the ight,” Mr Andrews said. “I thank every Victorian who is part of our massive team keeping our community safe –

you can thank them too by following the rules, which will see us all get through the pandemic. “hese numbers are heading in the right direction. I am and always was very cautious, but there is, on my part at least, a cautious optimism and a sense of real hope that this strategy is working and that we are seeing numbers fall now.” Victoria’s chief health oicer Brett Sutton, also expressed optimism about advances for a vaccine for the virus, with trials internationally showing promising signs, but he said it was unlikely a vaccine would be available for at least

six months. “We’ll get a picture of that level of protection in the next couple of months,” Professor Sutton said. “he fact there are vaccines in phase three development is very encouraging. But we have to prepare ourselves for the long-haul if there isn’t a vaccine available.” As of Sunday, Victoria had 7671 active coronavirus cases and had recorded more than 16,7060 cases since the pandemic began. More than 300 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.

Report to assess power project By Ewen McRae A comprehensive report on the environmental impacts of a planned transmission tower project will need to be prepared, following a state government decision. he Western Victoria Transmission Network Project will deliver power from wind farms in Bulgana, near Ballarat, along 190 kilometres of transmission lines through Moorabool and Melton to Melbourne. Project operator AusNet had referred the plans to the state planning minister to determine if an Environment Efects Statement

(EES) was needed. Minister Richard Wynne recently decided that it was. “While this project is important to the future of Victoria’s power system, it’s critical we assess its environmental efects to avoid or minimise impacts on the community or the environment,” Mr Wynne said. “his will assess the proposed area between Bulgana and Sydenham through Victoria’s most transparent and rigorous environmental assessment framework. “he Victorian government supports an eicient, modern, sustainable and afordable energy system – the EES process will tell us

exactly where we stand and how we can move forward – it’s important to get this right.” Landowners afected by the proposed project have expressed concerns about the impact on their livelihoods and way of life, with many calling for the transmission lines to be put underground instead of on towers. Moorabool council has raised concerns that the project would ruin the visual aesthetic of the region, and has also advocated for the underground option. However, AusNet says that underground lines are not being considered. Buninyong MP Michaela Settle said the

Last inancial year, Variety – the Children’s Charity Victoria funded nine assistance dogs to help improve the lives of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sensory Processing Disorder, anxiety and epilepsy. his year, the charity has received applications for dogs totalling more than $195,000, with eight children on their waiting list. Variety chief executive Mandy Burns said it was a great cause. “We know how much pets are loved, but for our children in need, an assistance dog will change their life and that of their family. “When specially trained seizure-alert dogs pull a child into the recovery position or a highly skilled Autism assistance dog keeps a child from running on the street, it is life-saving and gives a git of independence and safety that has been missing.” Details: www.petember.com.au

More grants for Moorabool businesses Businesses in Moorabool afected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic can apply for state government assistance under a grants program announced recently. Grants for businesses in regional Victoria became available last week, with payments to metropolitan Melbourne (including Melton) businesses already under way. Grants of up to $5000 for eligible businesses will help them get through the current lockdown and continue to survive as the pandemic continues. Premier Daniel Andrews said supporting business was vital for the state’s future. “We want businesses to survive this pandemic – we want people healthy and back at work,” Mr Andrews said. “We want to begin the process of rebuilding our economy and our community and setting us up for the future. “We can’t get to that point unless we all play a part in making this strategy work, but we will continue to support businesses to the other side.” Eligible businesses from metropolitan Melbourne that have received or applied for the initial grant will be eligible for an additional $5000 that will be processed automatically, without previous applicants needing to apply again. he state government has already paid $776 million to 77,600 eligible businesses in the irst round of the Business Support Fund as part of a $1.7 billion economic survival package.

Police are appealing for information after a car sped away from them at high speed. On Thursday, August 6, about 7.55pm, police observed a red-coloured Holden utility travelling very fast in an easterly direction on High Street, Melton West. As police attempted to get into a position to intercept the vehicle, it increased its speed and began to drive more erratically. The vehicle continued east along High Street between Trethowan Avenue and Coburns Road, overtaking several vehicles while travelling about 180-200km/h. Police did not attempt to intercept or follow the vehicle. Libraries gain popularity Libraries in Melton and Moorabool have had a rise in membership during the pandemic, with locals turning to books to help them through lockdown. An extra 399 members have signed up to Melton libraries since March, with more residents taking up library programs online and getting their favourite books to read. Anh Do, Aaron Blabey and Andy Griiths are among the municipality’s most popular authors, penning seven of the top 10 most borrowed books. “It’s wonderful to see our residents using this time at home to build their kids’ interest in reading, learn a new skill online, research their own ancestry, and so much more,” Melton mayor Lara Carli said.

By Ewen McRae It has been nine years since Alexia Yiangoulli received the news that would turn her adolescence upside down. At just 13, the Frasers Rise girl was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma, going through months of treatments while juggling school and the at times awkward side efects of her battle. Now 22, Ms Yiangoulli said it was, at times, a painful journey. “I was at my cousin’s place and they kept looking at my neck and saying there was a lump there,” Ms Yiangoulli said. “At irst the doctors just said it was a viral infection, but mum wasn’t happy with that so we got it checked again. Pretty soon I was in the Royal Children’s getting a biopsy and we found out it was Hodgkins Lymphoma. “I was lucky because they caught it early, but they couldn’t remove about 50 per cent of it because it was wrapped around my neck … we started chemo straight away.” What followed was ive months of chemotherapy and a month of radiotherapy, a huge strain for anyone, let alone someone so young. “At the time I had never really heard about cancer,” she said. “No one in my family had it, no one I knew had it, I just remember the only thing I was worried about was going bald. “It deinitely took a toll on me physically and emotionally, especially at that age. he younger kids at school would ask me about my hair or why I was wearing a beanie or a wig, so it was tough to be a young girl and going through that. “I think people understand it more now, and I don’t think they meant any harm back then, but it was tough when all you want to think about at that age is going to parties or meeting boys and all that normal stuf.”

Real estate oices may be shut due to COVID-19 restrictions, but property sales and rentals haven’t ground to a halt. Real Estate Institute of Victoria said real estate agents are still able to prepare properties that are due to settle for sale or those that are under a lease that ends during this six-week lockdown period. People who were already planning to move can still do so. REIV chief executive Gil King said it was important for certain services to continue operating. “It is critical that services related to contract settlements and end of lease continue as people have signiicant inancial commitments tied to these activities,” Mr King said. “Any contracted rentals or sales will not be disrupted; new buyers and renters will still be able to get into their new home. “At this stage, new listings will be impacted, but we are continuing to work with the state government to create provisions that will allow new transactions to proceed safely.” Final inspections, key collections, inal cleaning and any other services directly related to the settlement of property are able to proceed under strict safety measures.

hrough it all, Ms Yiangoulli received support from the Cancer Council, as well as her school, which organised fundraisers and World’s Greatest Shave events to show solidarity with her ight. Now in remission for nine years, Ms Yiangoulli said she is forever grateful for the support she received. “I’m far more aware of it all now, because my chances of cancer are obviously increased,” she said. “I did some volunteering for the Cancer

Council over the years, and help educate people a bit, because I knew nothing before I went through it personally. “Sadly I think more people are getting cancer these days, but also the education is so much better now, so with things like Dafodil Day it’s great to see people wearing the pin or buying the teddy bears to show support for people who are doing it tough.” Dafodil Day is on Friday, August 28. Melton’s pokies savings climb By Ewen McRae Nearly $30 million has been saved from gaming machines in Melton since the COVID-19 pandemic began, according to new data. he Alliance for Gaming Reform recently announced that Victorians had saved more than $1 billion from electronic gaming machines since March, with $28 million staying in the pockets of Melton residents. Alliance chief advocate Tim Costello said while the pandemic had been a terrible time for many communities, one positive had been the

closure of electronic gaming machine venues. “It has been awful reading about the lives lost to COVID-19 around Australia, and especially the devastating spikes in Victoria, and my heart goes out to the people afected,” Reverend Costello said. “We also feel tremendously deeply for the people who have lost their jobs through this dire crisis. “But we have experienced a silver lining in all this – the shutdown of poker machines has undoubtedly improved lives for many local people in Melton for the better, and perhaps even saved lives.”

he latest poker machine losses data for the 2019-20 inancial year showed that patrons lost $10,962,852 at the West Waters Hotel, the highest losses in Melton. Mac’s Hotel in Melton recorded the second highest losses of $9,100,714. Reverend Costello said it stood to reason that at least some of the $28 million in savings from poker machine losses in Melton would have been spent locally, boosting the economy at a time when it is needed most. “Poker machines are an efective drain on our economy. hey prevent people from having

the money to not only pay their bills, but to also do the little things in their community like buy a cofee and cake or a book from a local shop,” he said. “Poker machines are not innocuous, they do the majority of gambling harm in our community as they are seemingly inescapable, and the machines themselves are designed to addict people. “COVID-19 is presenting us with a unique opportunity to rethink the appalling situation Australia has gotten itself into with the prevalence of gambling.”

A stranger’s kindness Harpreet Marwaha has always been a big believer in helping his community. Early in the COVID-19 pandemic he helped prepare and deliver meals to those in need around the Melton region, and in recent weeks he has turned his focus to providing free masks and hand sanitiser to those who are unable to get it. More than 2000 donations have been made to community members who may be struggling or are unable to get to the shops for the necessary items. “Everybody is afected by COVID in some way, and some people ind it hard to get things like mandatory masks,” Mr Marwaha said. “I put up a post on the community page on Facebook, and within ive minutes I think I had 100 messages, so it was a bit overwhelming to see so many people in need. “here was one lady who had cancer so she couldn’t get out, and another lady who was pregnant so was inding it hard as well, so

many people in the community who need these mandatory items and I was happy to help.” While some of the items have been donated by local businesses, most of the items have been purchased by Mr Marwaha himself, something he said he was happy to continue doing. “I’m lucky that my business has been able to continue throughout, so I’m in a position to help out,” he said. “I’ve always been taught from my family to help those less fortunate, and obviously I get a lot of help to distribute everything so every little bit helps. “he response from the community has been amazing. VCE scores relect COVID impact By Ewen McRae Local students going through the inal year of high school will get extra support as part of a new state government plan to help them through the coronavirus pandemic. As part of the plan, every Victorian student will be individually assessed, and any adverse impacts of coronavirus will be relected in ATAR rankings as part of a wide-ranging process to ensure fair and accurate results. here will also be a wide-ranging “Consideration of Educational Disadvantage”

process to calculate VCE scores, taking into account disruptions to learning caused by the pandemic. Extra mental health support programs will also be put in place ahead of the exam period. Education Minister James Merlino said the changes were a relection of the strain that students had been under as they inish their schooling away from the classroom. “I know the very real stress and anxiety that many students and their parents are feeling. Today’s announcement will mean one less thing to worry about,” Mr Merlino said.

“With this additional support, we’ll make sure every student at every age has the support to be their best.” In a normal year, individual students are assessed for special consideration on a case by case basis. his year, schools will provide the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) with information on every single one of their students. he VCAA will consider a range of data alongside exam results, including a student’s expected achievement levels before the impact of coronavirus, school assessments completed

prior to remote and lexible learning, the General Achievement Test (GAT) and a range of statistical analyses to calculate inal results. Victorian premier Dan Andrews said it was an important step to allow students to focus on what matters most. “he bottom line is that every student has been impacted in some way by this pandemic – the challenge is to make sure that it doesn’t decide their future,” Mr Andrews said. “My message to VCE students is clear: you concentrate on doing your best, and we’ll take care of everything else.”

Siblings help refugees Two Delahey siblings have been given a leg-up in settling into Australian life thanks to a STEM scholarship provided by Western Chances and Toyota. Joseph and Julie Alkarra, originally from Damascus, Syria, moved to Melbourne in 2016. he brother and sister have both settled into Australian life, with Julie undertaking a bachelor of pharmacy (honours)/master of pharmacy at Monash University and Joseph studying a bachelor of science/master of engineering (mechatronics) at the University of Melbourne. Joseph said the scholarship had gone a long way to helping them achieve their dreams. “Our Western Chances scholarships are more than just money … we also got the opportunity to get involved with community camps through Western Chances where we now volunteer yearly.” Julie also had the opportunity to participate

in a mentorship program as a mentee through Western Chances, and also participated in a Victorian Multicultural Commission meeting and helped provide advice to the government departments and agencies on how best to ensure critical information is available to multicultural communities. Ater receiving a helping hand, Julie said the siblings are keen to give back. “We try our best to help new arrivals experience the best things about being here,” she said. “It is very scary to leave one’s country and come to a new place where you do not know anyone or the language … therefore we take part in a camp called ATLAS with an organisation called the Lord Somers Camp & Powerhouse. We volunteer with amazing other people to help those kids settle in and feel welcome in their new community.”

Contaminated soil from the West Gate Tunnel Project could be dumped in our area if a proposal by Cleanaway, operators of the Melbourne Regional Landfill, is approved. This means that 2,900,000 metric tonnes of contaminated soil would be taken to the Ravenhall landfill site, which neighbours Caroline Springs, Burnside, Rockbank, Mount Cottrell, Albanvale, and Deer Park. It would add 460 truck movements to local roads every day, for 16-18 months. That’s one every three minutes! Victoria University has found a unique way to support the mental health and wellbeing of hundreds of staf members and students during lockdown. As COVID-19 took hold in early March, Victoria University moved switly to ensure the safety, mental health and wellbeing of staf and students remained a number one priority. From there, the Elevenses Program was born. Each week day, Professor Alex Parker, a clinical psychologist and researcher in the Institute for Health and Sport delivers the VU Elevenses Program to staf and students.

It’s a 15 minute online session focusing on a range of topics with only one aim: to improve the wellbeing of participants. Each session is developed in collaboration with university experts in the ield of psychology, physical activity, and mental health. he name was inspired by Michael Bond’s famous Paddington Bear, who enjoyed daily 11am chats with his friend Mr Gruber. While the title of the program is whimsical, the initiative has successfully impacted the audience in profound ways. “We know that the program has signiicantly reduced participant’s experience of depression, anxiety and stress,” Professor Parker said.

“he sessions are made up of mini-interventions and strategies to help people manage and maintain wellbeing during this pandemic. “We focus on ways to nurture ourselves and our loved ones, how to better manage such a massive disruption and most importantly, how to avoid being overwhelmed during the COVID-19 pandemic.” Now, as Victorians are in stage four lockdown, the irst episodes of the VU Elevenses Program are free and available for sharing, with more added each week. Telehealth’s a real help for young family A western suburbs mum has found a silver lining in the coronavirus crisis, with the pandemic enabling her son to access speech therapy for the irst time in a year. Nina Parharidis said her son, Andronicus, was able to access regular speech therapy sessions via telehealth with the help of Melbourne City Mission, ater being without a therapist for 12 months. “here was no therapy available to him for a year but then COVID allowed us to get a spot through telehealth,” she said. “He is enjoying it … it has helped him. “When he wasn’t able to access speech therapy, he regressed … to see your child regress is heartbreaking.” Andronicus, 6, was recently diagnosed with KBG Syndrome – a rare genetic disorder caused by a mutation of the ANKRD11 gene. KBG Syndrome afects Andronicus in every way imaginable, Mrs Parharidis said. She said Andronicus has been receiving intervention services for developmental delays since he was four months old, adding that he didn’t start talking until he was 4.5 years old. “We are grateful to get a diagnosis. It is a very rare condition,” she said. “Each year, we did a lot of genetic testing and were told nothing had been detected. “Now we know what it is and it has helped us work out what we need to do.” Mrs Parharidis said Andronicus had taken to the telehealth sessions better than she expected. “It challenges him. He can’t point to something, so it challenges him to actually use words,” she said.

RAAF history uncovered By Alesha Capone A trove of signiicant Royal Australian Air Force documents, many of which have been locked away for 100 years, will be digitally recorded. he project will allow the public to gain online access to about 191 bound volumes of historic documents, many detailing the aspects of the daily operations of the RAAF in Point Cook and Laverton since 1920. he RAAF documents will be digitised through a $300,000 project delivered with the National Archives of Australia. It is expected to take about 12 months. he Point Cook airbase, which was established in 1913, is known as the birthplace of the RAAF. It is the oldest continually operating military airield in the world and served as the RAAF’s only base until 1925, when the Laverton base and another base in New South Wales were established. Deputy Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Stephen Meredith, said the RAAF records were regarded as key artefacts in the history of the air force. he documents include the Air Board and Air Council agendas and submissions, along with Chief of Air Staf Advisory Committee submissions. he Air Board was established in 1920 to administer the Australian Air Corps (AAC) and investigate the feasibility of establishing an independent air force. It later oversaw the disbandment of AAC and formation of RAAF. “he Air Board was responsible for all aspects of the daily operations and management of the RAAF, so these documents include intricate details of how the RAAF was initially structured and controlled,” Air Vice-Marshal Meredith said.

The facility neighbours Caroline Springs, Burnside, Rockbank, and Mount Cottrell where we know many families live and work. Although this decision is out of Council’s hands, we are doing what we can to give a voice to our residents and I’d urge you all to join us. Together with Brimbank City Council, we’re calling on the Victorian Government and Transurban to reject this proposal.

Cleanaway has proposed to accept the contaminated soil at the Melbourne Regional Landfill in Ravenhall, which neighbours Caroline Springs, Burnside, Rockbank, Mount Cottrell, Albanvale, and Deer Park.

While we support building the West Gate Tunnel so that residents can access work, education and health services quickly, Ravenhall is not an appropriate site for contaminated soil to be located.

We are absolutely opposed to dumping contaminated soil in an area where local families live and work. This soil could compromise our local environment.

Dr Kennedy said that as Melbourne moves through its second lockdown period, many will feel overwhelmed and isolated. “he mental health impacts of this lockdown have been signiicant and we’re starting to see this trickle through,” he said.

“People are struggling with mood, anxiety and other things, which is perfectly normal. “We’ve entered an extended period of lockdown again and people are feeling like that light at end of tunnel has been snatched away.” While we may not be able to control government decisions, Dr Kennedy said simple things can do wonders for your mental health. “One of the big things I’ve been talking about is routine,” Dr Kennedy said. “It sounds so simple, but it really has a signifcant impact on mental health. 12 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 18 August, 2020

“If you’re working from home, continue getting up as you would for work, shower at the same time, ind jobs around the house … plot these things ahead of time and keep them as a schedule.” While a schedule works wonders, Dr Kennedy also encouraged people to “switch it up”. “If you had an event like a dinner or movie night with friends, don’t cancel it and spend the night at home by yourself, switch it up. “Watch the movie over Zoom or Facetime with each other, keeping that social interaction up is very important.” here are many things we can do to improve our mental health, but one of the most important is knowing when it’s time to seek help. “here’s absolutely nothing wrong with feeling these things, but if you’re asking if you’re handling it as well as you could, or wondering if you should get some help, then that’s a bit of a red lag that it’s time to reach out,” Dr Kennedy said. “here’s also other subtle signs such as not enjoying things you usually do, lat on energy, keeping up work feeling diicult, and obvious ones like thoughts of self harm.” Dr Kenendy urged anyone who may need help to reach out to their local GP or mental health bodies. COVID-19 has upended children’s daily lives, resulting in added stress and uncertainty, according to a new report. he Royal Children’s Hospital National Child Health Poll has found the coronavirus has impacted on the mental health of more than one in three Australian children (36 per cent) and almost half (46 per cent) of parents report feeling that COVID-19 has had a negative impact on their own mental health. One in 10 (9%) children and one in 10 (11%) parents were reported to be either struggling or unable to cope with life at the time of data collection. hose parents who had experienced a negative inancial impact from the pandemic were more likely to report experiencing a negative mental health impact and/or report struggling or being unable to cope. Experiencing loneliness during the pandemic was also associated with an experience of a negative mental health impact for both parents and children. hose children who were reported to be doing more exercise since the pandemic were more likely to experience either no change or a positive impact on their mental health than those who did the same exercise or less. Despite the hardships, families have found some silver linings, including an appreciation of what is important and an increased closeness in the family. Families have spent more time reading, playing games and eating meals together than before. Poll director, paediatrician Dr Anthea Rhodes, said parents spending time with their child reading books, playing games or exercising are some of the best ways to create positive relationships, and these activities also come with beneits for both physical and mental health. “As we continue to adjust to life through the diferent stages of the pandemic, one helpful thing parents can do is focus on how they can continue with these positive new habits and activities,” Dr Rhodes said. “If kids have formed unhealthy habits during the pandemic, the best way to get back on track is to re-establish a routine that works best for you and your family. his could be cutting down on screen time and replacing it with some exercise, or setting boundaries around a healthy bedtime. “We should also try to remember it’s OK to feel a bit lost during the pandemic. Parents may need to go easy on their kids, and themselves, and it’s reasonable to relax the rules at home for a while. “However, as we all adjust to a ‘new normal’ it will be really important for families to ind a way to get back into healthy habits, as this will help not only your child, but you too.”
