Cafe serves up relief By Jessica Micallef Sunbury’s Brown Cow Cafe is providing relief packages for those are who experiencing inancial hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pasta, longlife milk, rice, hand sanitiser, masks and toilet paper are just a few of the items provided in the packages. Cafe owner Nick Truong said this was his way of giving back to the community. “hey have been supportive of us, we are a new business,” he said. “We did the relief packages in the irst lockdown and that went

really well and we were able to help out a few families.” Mr Truong is hoping to deliver about 200 packages during the second lockdown. He said families can pick up the packages from his cafe or arrange for home delivery. “If anyone is really struggling they can come and help themselves, no questions asked,” he said. “However, with stage four lockdown, we are looking at doing door-to-door delivery for those we won’t be able to come down to the shop. “I think this time, going into stage four, it is going to be tough so we are reaching out to

our family and friends who know people who might need the packages as well. “I just don’t want people to feel embarrassed when they reach out to us because we really are here to help.” Mr Truong said the relief packages were also helping his staf stay in work during the pandemic. “We have created more work for employees because they are spending one day packing and one day delivering so it is allowing more employment for the business,” he said. Sunbury retailers have been forced to shut up shop and thousands of jobs could be forever lost ater the state government introduced strict stage four restrictions in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell shire in a bid to slow down the spread of coronavirus. All retail businesses have closed their doors to shoppers for at least six weeks but can still provide a click and collect and delivery service. Supermarkets, grocery stores, bottle shops, pharmacies, petrol stations, banks, newsagencies and post oices will continue to operate. Cafes and restaurants will continue to provide takeaway and delivery services only and local butchers, fruit and vegetable shops and bakeries will remain open. Premier Daniel Andrews said he never thought he would have to ask people not to go to work. “We have to make this work. Livelihoods are counting on it,” he said. Regional Victoria, including the Macedon Ranges re-entered stage three lockdown last Wednesday. his means, there are only four reasons for Macedon Ranges locals to leave their home – shopping for essential items, exercise, care or caregiving and school or work, if it cannot be done from home. It is mandatory statewide for face coverings to be worn when leaving homes for one of the four essential reasons. Macedon Ranges chief executive Margot Stork said customer service centres, community halls and other facilities would remain closed until further notice. “We are all in this together and our Macedon Ranges community is strong, caring and resilient,” she said. “Our community did a great job in complying with the irst round of restrictions and we can support each other to do so again.” As of last Sunday, there were 578 active cases of cornavirus in Hume and 25 active cases in the Macedon Ranges. Airport’s rates plea denied By Laura Michell Melbourne Airport’s request for a $6 million rates waiver has been knocked back by Hume council. Australia Paciic Airports (Melbourne), which owns Melbourne Airport, made a submission to the council’s 2020-21 budget, urging councillors to consider reducing its rates bill for the next 12 months. APAM’s corporate and public afairs executive, Jai McDermott, told councillors the airport had been signiicantly impacted by the

COVID-19 pandemic. Mr McDermott said Melbourne Airport’s total revenue was down 85 per cent in May, compared to May 2019. He said passenger numbers had dropped dramatically, with just 73,000 passengers passing through the airport in May, compared to the long-term average of three million passengers. Mr McDermott said that despite the drop in revenue, the airport had ofered about $78 million in relief measures to its business partners to help them weather the pandemic. However, it needed a reduction in its rates to

enable it to continue providing assistance, he said. “Melbourne Airport has made a long and ongoing contribution to Hume City Council, in the order of $100 million over the last 10 years,” Mr McDermott said. “Right now, we need some support so we can continue our eforts on supporting our people and businesses in restarting the aviation industry. “We ask that the council consider the signiicant contribution made in previous years.” A report to the July 27 council meeting

said that while the council welcomed the opportunity to meet with the airport to work towards a new long-term agreement, it did not have the capacity to provide a rate reduction. “APAM’s request for rate relief is more than 50 per cent of council’s entire [$11.5 million] stimulus and support package which is for the beneit of over 92,000 ratepayers,” the report stated. Cr Joseph Haweil said he was shocked by APAM’s request. “Council has not approved the waiver of rates for any ratepayer,” he said.

Six Australian Defence Force oicers have been deployed to help assist nurses at Kyneton Health’s COVID-19 respiratory screening clinic. Oicers will help with swabbing patients and triaging people calling to make an appointment for testing. he oicers have medical, nursing and clinical skills and will be in Kyneton for the next two weeks. Central Highlands Rural Health’s deputy chief executive Phil Catterson said the additional support would give nurses an opportunity to catch a breath from the “demanding” workload. “Every day we have three to four nurses swabbing, four to six nurses on the phones booking appointments and our administration staf supporting the clinic with patient records,” he said. “his is on top of an already busy acute ward and urgent care centre.” Mr Catterson said more individuals were making the trip to the Kyneton respiratory clinic to get tested. “he numbers in the clinic are increasing daily,” he said. “Last week we saw an average of 160 patients each day. “his kind of workload can take its toll so we are very grateful that the Australian Defence Force team have come to assist our nursing team.” Since the clinic’s opening at the beginning of April, nurses have tested more than 8500 individuals for coronavirus. he clinic is open seven days a week. Macedon Ranges council is calling on its residents to show their support for small businesses across the shire as the region re-enters stage three restrictions. he Go Local First campaign, an initiative of the Council of Small Business Organisations Australia, is helping to highlight the important role small buisnesses play in the country’s economic recovery from the pandemic. he campaign encourages Australians to choose local small businesses when purchasing essential items. Macedon Ranges council’s planning and environment director, Angela Hughes, said small businesses accounted for just over one-third of Australia’s gross domestic product. She said an economic recovery would not be possible without small businesses trading and hiring people. “hroughout this pandemic, small businesses have done it tough,” she said. “Now is the time to be supporting Macedon Ranges’ local grocers, butchers, restaurants, cafes, accounting and legal irms, gardeners, tradespeople and goods producers like wineries and farmers. “Our local small businesses need our loyal communities to back them now by going local irst when they need to buy a product or service.” Ms Hughes said shopping locally meant local jobs and local economies “thriving”. “When you shop locally, your money stays in the community,” she said. “Small businesses are the heartbeat of local communities, when they thrive, communities thrive and the national economy prospers.“ he Go Local First campaign will be rolled out over the next six months.

Four year contract for Hume CEO By Laura Michell Hume council has reappointed chief executive Domenic Isola for another four years, despite one councillor claiming he was “too comfortable” in the role and that it was time for a change. Cr Jodi Jackson urged her colleagues to reappoint Mr Isola for just two years. “Some would – and oten do – argue that we are overdue for a change,” she said.

“Mr Isola has been part of this organisation for over 20 years, he is practically part of the furniture. “I think that Mr Isola is possibly a little bit too comfortable now, and my observation … [is] the relationship that the councillors have with the CEO is too close … to be as objective as required when reviewing his performance. “I regret to report that I have oten heard very negative comments about the CEO from all over the municipality.”

But the nine other councillors who attended the July 27 meeting threw their support behind Mr Isola, who has been at the helm of the council since August 2007. Cr Jack Medcrat described Mr Isola as “one of the best CEOs in Victoria”, adding that he was highly-regarded by his peers. “Going back a few years, council was in a broke situation – we were basically bankrupt. And now, look at us, we are possibly one of the most successful councils in the whole of

Victoria,” he said. “We have only got to look around at councils like Whittlesea and others to see what can happen if you don’t have the ship in the right direction.” Cr Leigh Johnston said he believed Mr Isola was the second-longest serving council chief executive in Victoria at the moment. “I have worked under a lot of leaders and managers … and I’ve got to say I’ve only ever seen Mr Isola as an ultimate professional.”

Grant boost for creatives Newham artist Samantha Slicer has received a funding boost to keep working throughout the coronavirus pandemic. Slicer is one of nine Macedon Ranges creative businesses or artists that will share in $45,000 through the state government’s Sustaining Creative Workers program. Hudson Japananga Maxwell of Mount Macedon, Woodend’s Katherine Scott and Shaun Evans, Elisabeth Langslow from Malmsbury, Woodstock Music and Joshua Tyler from Kyneton, Sandy Schelteme from Trentham and MDP Photography and Video in Fryerstown were also grant recipients. he money can be used to develop, deliver and adapt work in a changed environment, including supporting equipment upgrades, research and development, digital initiatives and professional and business capacity building. Slicer, who is a visual artist and photographer, welcomed the grant money. “COVID-19 has disrupted conventional public displays of many art forms but it has created a whole new demand for remote experiences that are genuinely immersive,” she said.

“With this grant, I will be researching virtual reality presentation methods to allow better remote communication and presentation of completed and in-progress works. “he aim is to create intuitively navigated virtual walk-through and 360 degree experiences of large works in real, or apparently real, spaces.” Macedon MP Mary-Anne homas said the grants would help artists adapt and future-proof their businesses and careers. “he Sustaining Creative Workers initiative is investing in the careers of our Macedon Ranges and Hepburn creatives and we are determined to help them survive and connect with audiences during this pandemic and beyond.” Jessica Micallef

Honouring a friend

Grants help keep clubs aloat

By Jessica Micallef Kristi Gilbert remembers her friend Rebecca Harrison as a “very kind, helpful and generous” Romsey resident. Rebecca succumbed to stage four breast cancer in April ater a short seven-month battle with the disease. “She knew straight away that it was a terminal diagnosis [and] she was only 47 when she was diagnosed,” Kristi said. “She was really well for a couple of months and ater Christmas she got ill, she deteriorated and passed away in the middle of COVID-19 restrictions.” During the last few months of her life, Rebecca decided to put others before herself. She chose to help the Romsey and Lanceield community that she knew and loved by donating her money and time to community groups and sports clubs. “Ater Bec was diagnosed she knew her time was short,” Kristi said. “She didn’t have children or a husband that she needed to care for aterwards so she wanted to give her money to people who needed it. “She felt very philanthropic and was donating money to many community groups in Lanceield and Romsey and local areas to help them with sport equipment and in the form of git vouchers. “She contacted a lot of groups herself to see if they needed anything. She was really supportive our of local community especially ater COVID-19 struck. “She was very passionate about our community. She took a lot of pleasure in helping people out.” Now Kristi is taking up her own challenge in honour of Rebecca. During August, the Kyneton resident is aiming to achieve 10,000 steps a day and

Community sport in the Macedon Ranges has been given a boost. he Riddell District Football and Netball League, Kyneton Basketball Association and Macedon Ranges Netball Association have all received grants as part of the state government’s Community Sport Sector COVID-19 Short-Term Survival Package. he grants can be used to help the clubs and associations meet the ixed costs to ensure they can remain operationally viable now and into the future and provide a boost for their clubs and memberships. Macedon MP Mary-Anne homas said since the start of coronavirus lockdown and restrictions, community sport and recreation had sufered a signiicant revenue loss, putting associations, leagues and clubs at inancial risk. She said more than 200 local leagues and associations across Victoria have scored a share in more than $1.4 million as part of the package. “People in the Macedon Ranges love their footy, basketball and netball and these grants are helping our associations keep their eye towards a return to play,” she said. “Ensuring community sport and active recreation organisations survive this crisis and come back better than ever is critical to our economic and social recovery and to our community’s physical and mental wellbeing.”

Shooting arrest

A 31-year-old Roxburgh Park man was arrested last week in relation to a non-fatal shooting of a Sunbury kebab shop owner in February. Yusuf Kucukbas and his wife were returning home to their Belleview Drive property about 1am on Saturday, February 8 after attending a wedding, when Mr Kucukbas was allegedly shot by a male offender. Police previously charged a 39-year-old Kangaroo Flat man and 40-year-old Long Gully woman in February in relation to the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.

Share the dignity Woolworths is encouraging Sunbury and Macedon Ranges shoppers to donate sanitary items as part of its August Dignity Drive. Collection boxes have been set up at the supermarket giant’s Kyneton and Sunbury store for Share he Dignity to help women and girls who may be experiencing period poverty, have free access to sanitary items. Share he Dignity’s volunteer state leader Breanna Tsemetzis said more women are having to choose between buying food or sanitary items due to the economic and inancial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. She said Share he Dignity has reported a 54 per cent increase in the number of charities registered for the August Dignity Drive compared to previous drives.

“COVID-19 continues to have a profound impact on communities across Australia and it is so important that we come together to help those in need during these diicult times,” she said. “hrough no fault of their own, more woman and girls in Sunbury and Macedon Ranges are not going to be able to aford basic essentials and will have to resort to toilet paper, socks or washers to deal with their period.” Woolworths will also donate ive cents from the sale of sanitary products in August to Share he Dignity to help the charity fund more Dignity vending machines that dispense free sanitary items.

Macedon Ranges council will plant more than 300 trees on nature strips throughout the region until September as part of it’s annual tree planting program. Before planting, council staff will inspect tree planting sites to check that the trees are suitable for each location. All tress are selected from the council’s preferred species list and are purchased from local nurseries. Council staff will regularly water the trees during the warmer months for the irst two years to ensure the trees mature. Residents are encouraged to help water the trees in the hot weather and will be provided with a bucket and information brochure, explaining how to look after trees.

MY PLACE Ian Pumpa considers himself a Sunbury local. He spoke to Jessica Micallef about his design business and how ‘people work’ in a pandemic. tell me about the app and why you decided to create it. I wanted to make life simpler for people who were undertaking a building or renovation project. Ater years of meeting with clients and seeing the bundles of documents they needed to carry around, the huge potential for things to be misplaced and the struggle to keep all this information organised, I believed there must be a better way. I worked through a few ideas and eventually signed up with an app development company, we spent the next 12 months in development and testing and MY Build hit the App Store and Google Play in January 2018. he My Build App was a inalist in both the 2018 and 2019 Australian Construction Awards in the category of Technological Innovation of the Year which I am extremely proud of.

What is your connection to Sunbury? My family moved to Sunbury from Canberra at the start of 1984 when I was nine-years-old. I’m pretty sure the sign at the top of the hill near Goonawarra had the Sunbury population at 14,000 people back then. I went to Sunbury West Primary School from grade 4 until the end of grade 6 and then all of my high school years were spent at Sunbury Secondary College (Sunbury College). I moved away from Sunbury in my mid-20s only to return again, this time with my wife and kids when I was about 30. I think I can get away with saying I’m a local. What do you love most about Sunbury? Sunbury has an amazing sense of community which I think I took for granted for many years but ater returning about 12 years ago from living elsewhere, I can’t help but appreciate it and believe it’s a great place for my two sons to grow up.

Tell me about your business Urban Tech Design? I established Urban Tech Design ater heading up the national design and product development department of a large Melbourne-based builder for more than 22 years. he experience I gained in that role … gave me the knowledge and ability to design homes practically and cost efectively whilst still providing the wow features that people expect.
