Woolies online hub By Tate Papworth Woolworths will temporarily convert its Watergardens South supermarket into an online delivery hub as Melbourne endures stage 4 COVID-19 restrictions. he store was closed to in-store customers last Tuesday and will now solely serve online grocery delivery customers until further notice. Woolworths says the conversion of the store and two others located at Dandenong Plaza and Mountain Gate will enable it to pick and dispatch tens of thousands more weekly online orders to customers in the surrounding suburbs. his includes online orders for the most

Brimbank’s active COVID-19 case tally was heading toward 900 cases on Sunday night. An additional 15 cases on Sunday brought the municipality’s total to 878 active cases, second only to Wyndham (942). It comes as three outbreaks within Brimbank continue to grow. A total of 146 cases had been linked to the troubling outbreak at the Estia Aged Care Facility in Ardeer, while the outbreak at the JBS abattoir in Brooklyn also surpassed 100 with 125 cases. he outbreak at Catholic Regional College in Sydenham reached 38 linked cases over the weekend. Residents have now endured a week of strict stage 4 measures in a bid to quell the rampant spread of the virus. Premier Daniel Andrews said he was pleased with the number of people doing the right thing, but had a clear message for those breaking the rules. “I think that people – a growing number of Victorians know and understand that this is a battle, this is a ight the likes of which we’ve never been engaged in, ever,” he said. “But we overcome. We overcame ire. We overcame drought. “We overcome lots of challenges. We are a resilient people. “But everyone has to play a part in that. “To those whose aren’t, Victoria Police are out there and they will ine you.” Sunday marked the state’s lowest tally of new cases (394) in 12 days, but Mr Andrews warned Victorians not to get the wrong idea. “Obviously, any day where there’s fewer cases than the previous day is a good one,” he said. “But I wouldn’t want to be trying to predict, I wouldn’t want to take one day’s data or even a week’s data.” Tate Papworth

Councils dirty on toxic soil By Tate Papworth Brimbank and Melton councils have stepped up their eforts to prevent contaminated soil from the Westgate Tunnel project being dumped at Melbourne Regional Landill in Ravenhall. he landill’s operator, Cleanaway, is currently seeking planning approval from the Planning Minister to construct a soil management and reuse facility (SMRF) to store soil. But the two councils are calling on the Victorian Government and Transurban to reject Cleanaway’s bid. Melton mayor Lara Carli said the council

has opposed the proposal to dump the spoil in Ravenhall in the interests of nearby families and future investment and job opportunities for locals. “Although we fully appreciate that the Westgate Tunnel Project will reduce congestion and increase productivity, Ravenhall is not an
appropriate site for contaminated soil to be located,” Cr Carli said. “he site is adjacent to established residential suburbs in a signiicant growth area. he neighbouring Rockbank/ Mount Cottrell area has the second fastest growth rate in Victoria at 37 per cent, while Caroline Springs, Burnside, Albanvale, and Deer Park are home to well-established communities.” Brimbank council is also strongly opposed to the bid and has thrown it’s weight behind Melton’s opposition. Brimbank mayor Georgina Papafotiou said two voices are stronger than one. “he construction of this facility should not compromise the environment for our local
communities in the years to come. It would be inappropriate to send contaminated soil to Ravenhall. “here would be 460 additional truck movements every day on local roads. “hat’s a truck movement every three minutes, placing burden on existing and growing residential and commercial areas. “Dumping contaminated soil at Ravenhall undermines the work that has already been undertaken in Brimbank and Melton by all levels of government, and should be considered in the context of employment, education and development opportunities for local communities.”

Giant solar farm to power airport Melbourne Airport is in the process of creating a massive solar energy farm that it says will generate enough renewable energy to power all four of its passenger terminals. he farm is set to be turned on in January 2021 and will generate nearly 15 per cent of the airport’s annual electricity consumption. Melbourne Airport chief of landside access, utilities and facilities group Lorie Argus, said she was proud of the investment. “With the airport’s electricity demand expected to grow, the construction of our solar farm makes sense for several reasons,” Ms Argus said.
“he project is expected to deliver signiicant annualised energy cost savings, a timely beneit with the impacts of COVID-19 wreaking havoc on the aviation industry. “We are committed to growing the airport in an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable way. his renewable energy project is another chapter in that story.” he installation is one of the largest in the country and the largest of any Australian airport. he farm is being produced by Beon Energy Solutions with construction set to be complete next month.

Victoria University will empower newly arrived migrants and refugees in Melbourne’s West to participate in sport and physical activity ater it was awarded a $330,000 Australian Government social inclusion grant. he two-year project, Change Makers: Empowering sports to enhance social inclusion for migrants and refugees, was one of only 57 accepted from more than 800 applications for the Department of Health’s $19 million Driving Social Inclusion through Sport and Physical Activity program. he project will focus on a community-driven, evidence-based ‘Change Makers’ program that VU’s sport diversity and social change researchers – Dr Brent McDonald, Dr Fiona McLachlan, Dr Carla Luguetti and Professor Ramón Spaaij – have previously used with great success. Beginning in September, the team will collaborate with Brimbank City Council, Welcoming Australia, Volunteer West and the Wyndham Basketball Association to identify 60 volunteer change makers. Dr Brent McDonald said the change makers will complete workshops and be mentored to co-create and implement individual programs targeted to increase inclusion, diversity and equity in a range of sports – substantially and sustainably. “We are delighted our project that uses sport as a vehicle for social justice and social transformation in Melbourne’s West is part of the Australian Government’s social inclusion program,” Dr McDonald said. “Migrant and refugee groups in the region will beneit through enhanced opportunities for participation and social connection in sport, as well as from the increased capability of community Change Makers to lead and assist in inclusion projects in their sports.” Tate Papworth
Fundraising appeal launched to help migrant children he Refugee Migrant Children Centre (RMCC) has launched a fundraising appeal to give children from refugee and migrant backgrounds the technology they need to access their school’s remote learning. he centre says hundreds of children from refugee and migrant backgrounds across Victoria are locked out of remote learning because they don’t have the technology and internet access they need at home. To redress this inequality, RMCC has launched Tech to Connect, a digital fundraising
campaign to provide children from refugee and migrant backgrounds with the technology and internet access they need at home to continue their education. During Victoria’s irst round of remote learning, approximately 70 per cent of the children supported by RMCC lacked the technology and internet connection they needed to access remote learning during the nine weeks of lockdown, preventing them from participating efectively in their education, according to RMCC.
RMCC chief executive Alice Wojcik said the complexities of the settlement journey are hard enough without adding an additional layer of uncertainty and disadvantage that lockdown and remote learning has brought. “It has been heartbreaking to see the repercussions it has had upon them, through no fault of their own, because they can’t access their school’s remote learning or the support of their RMCC mentors,” Ms Wojcik said. “heir resilience and determination to keep pushing forward is a privilege to witness and
I hope the community can come together to support them through this time.” She said the longer it takes to get children connected, the more they risk falling behind. Hopes of market bounce back By Tate Papworth While it may be a turbulent time for the economy, one Brimbank real estate agent is bullish that the property market will hit the ground running when stage four restrictions are lited. Jim Hatzimosis at Barry Plant Real Estate Taylors Lakes said while times are uncertain, there’s a sense of familiarity about the current situation. “Now efectively stage four throws totally diferent dynamic into the mix … we
can’t have physical inspections and whilst we’re setup with tech and can do virtual tours, history tells us people want to physically look at a home,” he said. “Moving forward we’ll see transactions stop or slow to a trickle, but if we look back, stats from Domain and RealEstate.com show us since the impact of COVID, eyeballs on their sites have increased, so the demand is still there. “You’ll always have people who need to transact … look at someone who has sold
their home – they can’t buy over the next ive weeks, but when we can get back out on the street again, there will be a number of people in that sort of situation and really the weeks ater restrictions are lited should be quite busy.” Mr Hatzimosis hoped that the industry would take learnings from the last round of restrictions and put them to good use this time around. “When this all irst hit us, the reality for the irst few weeks was that none of us knew what was going to happen, but straight ater, a new
playing ield emerged,” he said. “We couldn’t do open house but went back to old school selling – private inspections and tours … that sort of thing. “As they eased, we saw a real lit again in activity and although we’ve had new restrictions hit, we’ll use this time to stay engaged with our client base and keep them in the loop in changes in rules. “Other than that, we’ll be preparing for the exit ramp and to hit the ground running in September.”
Community help sought to name hub In the spirit of Boaty McBoatface, the Brimbank council is seeking the community’s help and creativity to name the new St Albans health and wellbeing hub. he new hub will replace the ageing St Albans Leisure Centre and is set to feature a 50-metre, 10 lane swimming pool, two massive water slides, wellness centre, 24-hour gym, community program room and more. Mayor Georgina Papafotiou said the community is encouraged to get creative and submit a name that is meaningful, distinctive and will inspire pride of place. “his new hub will be a meeting place for our community to swim, relax, work out, heal, learn and grow for generations to come,” Cr Papafotiou said. “We want our community to take ownership of their new leisure, learning, aquatic, wellness and health hub by giving it a name that is meaningful to them, local and timeless.” Works on the new hub are set to start in

Full STEM ahead A Cairnlea robotics enthusiast who achieved her dream of completing a masters of mechanical engineering through a STEM grant program, is continuing to use her passion to inspire more women to follow in her footsteps. Selena was the recipient of a STEM scholarship which is ofered through a partnership between Western Chances and Toyota. he scholarships are given to talented young people in Melbourne’s west and aim to encourage them to pursue further study and careers in STEM as well as nurture and celebrate young talents. Selena, who was sponsored by Western Chances through her high school and university career, said her life could have looked a lot diferent without the support.
“hey sponsored me for about 10 years and opened up a lot of opportunities for me,” Selena said. One such opportunity led Selena on a path to employment. “In my inal year of uni we had a career program with Ernst & Young. “Prior to that I didn’t know much about consulting work, but it was really eye-opening and opened my eyes that I could do something else with my degree. “So I applied for a graduate program with them and I’ve been working for them as a business consultant since.” While well on her way to achieving her dreams, Selena hopes her story inspires other young women to get involved in STEM programs. A good Samaritan is being praised after returning $1740 cash they found in a small zip case in a shopping centre car park on Ashley Street, Braybrook. The owner was eventually located and said he had lost the money over a day before after withdrawing it from the bank in Braybrook. Police said he was on the verge of tears of joy when he attended the police station to collect it as his small business has been struggling lately due to the COVID-19 pandemic and losing the money would have pushed the business over the edge.

COVID-19 crackdown begins By Tate Papworth Victoria Police and Australian Defence Force personnel have looded the streets in a show of force, ensuring Victorians are abiding by stage four COVID-19 restrictions. As of last week, a ine of $4957 can be issued to a person who is found to breach the requirement to self-isolate for a second or subsequent time – the highest on-the-spot infringement Victoria Police can issue. here will be an additional 250 oicers joining Operation Sentinel – which polices Victoria’s coronavirus rules – bringing it to a team of 750 Victoria Police oicers. hey will be assisted by ADF personnel and Department of Health and Human Services authorised oicers making in-person visits to the homes of people who have tested positive, or are close contacts, to ensure they are self-isolating. Premier Daniel Andrews said there would be no exceptions. “If we all do the right thing, we will get through this. hose doing the wrong thing will cop a ine from Victoria Police because the only way to beat this deadly virus is if we all follow the rules,” Mr Andrews said. “We have a massive team going door-to-door to support all Victorians – including more powers and resources to Victoria Police to catch anyone who thinks they can get away with doing the wrong thing.” Last week more than 500 ADF personnel and 300 oicers joined the teams already on the ground, boosting the operation scale up to 4000 household visits every day. “he AASW has consistently, and persistently, called for an increase in allowable mental health sessions, over a long period of time and not just in response to the COVID-19 situation.” Ms Craik said increasing the number of sessions will allow social work mental health professionals to better support individuals to work through the anxiety and complicated presentations they are seeing at this time. While it is a welcome start, she warned it will not alone be suicient to address the growing mental health needs of the community
and the growing demand on mental health professionals and services. “We also need to see an extension of the use of telehealth and technology to support people where it is appropriate. For example, there is a huge need for work to address recovery for those who have experienced family violence. “It is clear that if we are to work to support the mental health of Australians through this pandemic and into recovery, there needs to be adequate service provision, and this is a long-term proposition, not a short-term situation.”
Healing through art Anyone passing by CS Gallery in Caroline Springs can view a new exhibition installed on the exterior of the building recently. Titled Healing, the work by Aboriginal artist Mandi Barton was commissioned by Melton council to address health and wellbeing messages related to the COVID-19 crisis and the impact on Indigenous connections, narratives and identities. With experience in storytelling and connecting communities through art, Ms Barton created large-scale digital pieces that cover the themes of culture, clan, country, community and connection. he works incorporate images taken at the local Wurundjeri country at Kororoit Creek in Burnside. he exhibition represents people socialising in video calls; those who are supporting the physical, emotional and mental wellbeing of others; the need for food, health and
accommodation; cultural connection and more. It’s devastating to see the impact that COVID-19 is continuing to have across the state of Victoria. With such high numbers it’s no surprise that we’ve now entered Stage 4 restrictions under the direction of the Victorian Government.
Under the State Government directions there is a limited list of reasons for leaving your home. If you do need to leave home, you must wear a face covering unless you have a lawful exception.
• Travel is limited to 5km from your home • If the nearest shop is more than 5km away, you may travel to the nearest provider • Only one person per household can leave home to shop and only once a day • If you are caring for a young child or at-risk person, they may accompany you Exercise • Limited to once a day and only for one hour
Care and care giving • If you need to see a doctor or health care professional, you should do so. Your doctor can provide advice on how to stay safe • You can care for a sick or elderly relative. You should try to keep 1.5 metres between you when you can and wear a face covering • You can accompany someone for essential medical treatment if you are a parent, guardian or necessary support person • You can take a pet to the vet Work • If you can work from home, you must continue to work from home • Study at TAFE and university must be done remotely Personal • You can still visit an intimate partner • Shared parenting arrangements can continue for children

Although these restrictions may seem challenging, please remember that they are only temporary and they will help keep us so much safer at this uncertain time. I’d like to thank everyone for following the rules and in particular the many residents who are helping their family, friends and neighbours to understand the restrictions and to support them wherever possible. Last week, we launched a joint campaign with Brimbank City Council against dumping contaminated soil from the Westgate Tunnel Project in our area, after learning that the Melbourne Regional Landfill was among the sites being considered. The facility in Ravenhall is in close proximity to Caroline Springs, Burnside, Rockbank, and Mount Cottrell where many families live and work. If this soil comes to Ravenhall, we can expect 460 additional truck movements on our roads every single day. Our priority is the wellbeing of nearby residents which includes protecting liveability, ensuring safety, and generating more local employment. The decision to locate contaminated soil at Ravenhall is out of Council’s hands, however we will be lobbying the Victorian Government to make the right choice in how they handle the soil from the Westgate Tunnel. New importance to Red Cross calling Victorians experiencing loneliness or social disconnection due to coronavirus will receive support from the Australian Red Cross and local community organisations with one call to the coronavirus hotline, thanks to a new Victorian government initiative. Disability, Ageing and Carers Minister Luke Donnellan has launched the Community Activation and Social Isolation initiative with more than $6 million over six months to support people experiencing loneliness or social disconnection as a result of coronavirus (COVID-19). he initiative is part of the Victorian government’s $59.4 million mental health and wellbeing package, helping Victorians with additional support to deal with signiicant changes to thier lives as a result of the pandemic. “he coronavirus pandemic has bought into even sharper focus the importance of community and social connections to improve health and wellbeing. his initiative is about people getting the help they need safely and locally,” Mr Donnellan said. ”If you’re feeling lonely, give the coronavirus hotline a call on 1800 675 398 and press three to speak to an Australian Red Cross volunteer who will provide a friendly ear and can connect you to support in your local community.” For many Victorians, physical distancing and social or work-related restrictions have led to feelings of loneliness and disconnection. For those already lonely or isolated before the pandemic, it’s been even harder to get help to
