Face masks are now mandatory across Victoria and one Darley woman is doing her bit to help the community stay safe. Karen Pinder started making a few masks for friends and family who wanted them, and has now made nearly 400 masks for those in need in recent weeks. She said it was an easy way of making a difference. “When I saw people advertising masks and making a proit out of it I thought that was wrong, so I started with a few and just kept going,” Ms Pinder said. “People are struggling, and I had material here and I’m a basic sewer so I thought ‘why not’?” “They’re pretty easy to make, but people have been very thankful for them. A lot of people can afford to buy them, but there’s a wait now so this works well for them.” Ms Pinder has donated all the masks she has made, with some in the community giving her material and elastic to help keep up with demand. She has also provided a number of masks to local charities providing hot meals for those in need. “Making a mask is a small way of helping and hopefully it makes a difference in the community.” Ewen McRae

Millions for virus recovery By Jessica Micallef A recovery fund to support the community and local businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic has been approved as part of the Hume and Macedon Ranges’ 2020-21 budgets. Hume councillors endorsed the inal budget last week, which includes an $11.5 million stimulus package to assist businesses, sporting clubs, community groups and ratepayers recover from coronavirus. he package includes a rate waiver of $50 for residential and rural properties, funding for food parcels and essential items for families

in inancial hardship, grants for small and medium businesses, rent relief for tenants occupying council facilities and fee waivers and grants for local sporting clubs. Cr Karen Sherry said the economic efects of the virus were going to progress longer than the pandemic. “Now more than ever, we are required to balance the iscal responsibility with making provisions for our city’s future needs,” she said. “he COVID-19 epidemic will continue to be felt in Hume ater the health crisis is gone [and] we are ready to meet the challenges. “here has never been a more important

time for council to invest in critical projects, our community’s needs and to create jobs for our local people.” More than $10 million has been allocated towards car parking across the municipality, including building a multi-deck carpark at the corner of Station and Evans streets in Sunbury, new indented parking bays on narrow streets and resurfacing of existing carparks across the city. Cr Jana Taylor said the council had demonstrated its ability to utilise the budget in a “reactive way” in a time of crisis. “At a very base level, these works will endeavor to make our footpaths walkable, our

bike paths rideable, our bridges crossable and our open spaces fun and engaging,” she said. he Macedon Ranges 2020-21 budget has allocated $1.1 million to a COVID-19 recovery fund which includes the deferral of late fees on animal registrations, waiver of footpath permit renewals and additional funding to the council’s existing grant programs. Key projects funded in the budget include stage two of the Romsey Ecotherapy Park and the Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Precinct. Hume and Macedon Ranges’ 2020-21 budgets include a rate increase of two per cent, in line with the state-imposed rate cap.

Airield plans clear for take-off By Jessica Micallef he long-awaited Kyneton Airield Masterplan has received the tick of approval – minus plans to build a tourism hub and new private hangars. Councillors at their meeting last month knocked back plans to rezone a lot at 8 Rawson Place from farming to public use to accomodate a tourism hub, oices and up to 12 privately-owned hangers at the airield. he proposed masterplan suggested lights could almost double from 5100 to 10,000 a year if supporting infrastructure such as additional

hangars were available to aircrat operators. Cr Mandi Mees said a major focus of the council was to invest in recreational activity, and providing hangars at the Kyneton Airield would be “prudent” to sustaining the airield. However Cr Jennifer Anderson said there had been not enough community support for a tourism hub and additional hangars. he airield, which is operated by the Kyneton Aero Club, currently has 34 hangars to house 60 aircrat. Club president Warren Canning said he was pleased with the “realistic” masterplan and was

not phased about the rejection of the hub or extra hangars. “he tourism hub was not something the aero club was seeking, however the aero club would support it if council felt that it was of beneit to the broader community,” he said. “More importantly, the council did approve the building of two to three commercial hangars and they are for things like aircrat maintenance and engine rebuilding, so from a community point of view, it brings not just economic activity, it brings employment and education and training in the form of

apprenticeships. “So I think as the economy tries to recover post COVID-19, that is a great opportunity.” As part of the master plan, about 150 metres of the northern runway would be sealed to increase landing and takeof distance available and, in turn, reduce noise over the Kyneton township. Macedon Ranges Residents Association secretary Christine Pruneau said the new plan took a “calmer approach”. “From where it was, it’s a much better outcome for the community,” she said.

Old house becomes new hub A group of residents rallying to save an old house in Macedon have recevied a funding boost. Macedon and Mount Macedon Community House Group members have received more than $92,000 from the council to renovate and transform the house at 47 Victoria Street, Macedon into a community hub. Group chairperson Samara Hodson said she was grateful councillors had once again shown their support, ater the council previously committed $142,000 to the project. “It’s great that councillors have been able to see that we mean what we say, that we want this

building to stay and we want to create a central hub for the Macedon and Mount Macedon community.” Earlier in the year, group members launched an online crowdfunding campaign to raise money for the renovation. More than $31,000 was raised. “We started fundraising just as COVID-19 kicked in and it was of the back of the bushires and we thought the whole thing would fall lat,” Ms Hodson said. “I think the community have showed they really want this hub.”

A community campaign last year by the then Victoria Street Neighbourhood Working Group successfully stopped an impending sale of the house. Earlier this month, the state government introduced new rules outlawing the sport and forcing clubs to shut their doors. However, Victoria is the only state to introduce a ban on golf, with the sport able to continue on greens interstate, as long as social distancing regulations are followed. Mr van Pelt said the Victorian ban had caused a lot of frustration among golfers. He has called for the state government to reverse its decision. “Golf is an outdoor activity that can be run in line with the isolation requirements,” he said. Mr van Pelt said the golf club, like many other supporting organisations, had been impacted inancially by the coronavirus pandemic. Woodend function centre plan refused Macedon Ranges councillors have knocked back a planning permit application to build a retail premises in an industrial zone in Woodend. he application proposed to redevelop an existing building at 30 Brooke Street, Woodend into a retail premises consisting of a market, restaurant, bar, function centre and oice space. It also requested a liquor licence for the restaurant, function centre and bar, a reduction in car parking spaces in the area and the removal of ive council-owned blue gum trees along Brooke Street.

he council received several objections to the redevelopment which stated the proposal was at odds with the character of the town. Cr Jennifer Anderson said the application was “very complex”. “his proposal … is going to afect the amenity of the land in terms of traic, parking [and] the issues of noise,” she said. “Parking is a big issue. here is a large amount of parking to be waived that is going to have to occur in the surrounding streets.” he application proposed varied hours of operation and patron numbers, depending on

the facility. he function centre could have held up to 365 individuals and on request, be open until 1am on weekend evenings. Cr Anderson said the proposed operation hours were a concern. “he area is thought to be quite safe by residents and quiet. hey enjoy being next to an industrial zone because it doesn’t cause them too many troubles because the hours of operations are really during business hours during the week,” she said. “his development proposes much longer hours and on the weekend.

Training hub takes shape By Jessica Micallef he Sunbury SES has a new “state-of-the-art” training room facility. A portable building was installed at the Sunbury headquarters last month, which will be used to train and recruit new SES members. Volunteer Jarrod Bell said the training spaces and facilities had been “woefully inadequate” to accommodate the nearly 100 SES volunteers. “When I irst joined the service 10 years ago, we had about 30 volunteers and now we have just under 100 so we have more than doubled in size,” he said. “Our training room was just too small.” he SES applied for a state government Pick My Project grant and was awarded with $200,000 in 2018 to build a new training facility. Mr Bell said SES members reached out to Jayco to put together a portable building. “We always looked at doing a portable design that gave us the lexibility to move it in the future,” he said. “When the building is complete, it will triple our available training space, it will allow us to run state-of-the-art conferences, there will be audio visual facilities so we can run presentations and Zoom training sessions. “With this new facility, it means that will have a dedicated facility to meet.” he new building will also be used by local community groups and organisations, including Sunbury Festival, the Sunbury Blue Light Disco committee and the St John Ambulance Sunbury division. he site’s motor bay room is also getting extended, with construction expected to be completed in a few months. “It absolutely will revolutionise and change the way we train, how we respond to emergencies and how we meet as both an emergency service but as a community service group,” Mr Bell said. “With the extension of the building and the new training room, it will make us an SES training hub for the north west of Melbourne.”

Tips for wearing masks around pets Masks are the newest accessory residents are donning in a bid to help slow the spread of coronavirus. But the RSPCA is urging pet owners to consider how the introduction of face masks may impact their furry friends. RSPCA Victoria behaviourist Nikki Johnson said it would not be surprising if pets reacted diferently to their owners wearing a mask. “One of the main ways pets communicate with their owners is by facial expressions,” she said. “Masks remove much of this form of communication so it would not be unusual for them to feel uneasy with this new change.” Ms Johnson said it was important to pair the experience of introducing face masks to pets with something desirable including a treat, fun game, praise or afection. “his will help them associate the mask with something positive,” she said. “If you note your animal is showing fear, and it is safe to do so, consider removing or lowering your mask to normalise the situation and help them read your facial expressions.” he RSPCA encourages pet owners to wear plain masks of pale colour, avoid masks with faces, eyes or mouths and to keep eye contact with the animal while wearing a mask. “Pets usually respond better to change when it is slow or gradual,” Ms Johnson said. Op shop helps shelters Woodend’s Sandy Howe is doing her bit to support the region’s dedicated wildlife rescuers. Ms Howe has opened Wildlife Rescues Op Shop in Woodend, to help raise funds for animal shelters, carers and rescuers across the Macedon Ranges. “I want to be able to give each shelter a couple thousands of dollars,” Ms Howe said. “It [the shop] is very well supported, both through donations and shopping.” Ms Howe opened the shop last month because she wanted to help protect wildlife that are oten injured on the roads. “I live on acreage in Wooded and every day I drive on Black Forest Drive and see the casualities from the night before. “hese shelters and carers and rescuers … they receive little or no funding so I thought this was a way I could pay it back.”

Anger grows over toxic soil By Jessica Micallef Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn is throwing his support behind Sunbury residents trying to block a proposal to send toxic soil Sunbury’s way. Mr Finn will present a petition to Parliament this month, asking the state government to reject the necessary permits required to allow waste management and recycling company Hi-Quality to treat and dispose of soil excavated from the West Gate Tunnel project at the Sunbury Eco-Hub on Sunbury Road. As of Wednesday last week, 900 individuals had signed the petition. Mr Finn said he was “vehemently opposed” to the proposal to dump toxic waste in Sunbury. “I think it is an outrage that is is being considered,” he said. “Just down the road they are building a new housing estate. I don’t know how the developers feel about this … it is a threat to their investment but it is also a threat to the lives of people who will be buying homes there. “PFAS is poisonous and it is a threat to everybody in this area and I include myself in that area because I live in Bulla.” According to Mr Finn, Hi-Quality briefed residents about the proposal in the form of letterbox drops. He said that was not good enough. “If that is consultation then that is not on,” he said. Deb Butler has lived in Sunbury for 12 years. Residents urged to shop local Macedon MP Mary-Anne homas has launched a Shop Local, Spend Local, Enjoy Local campaign, to encourage Macedon Ranges residents to shop and spend their money at local businesses. Ms homas is encouraging individuals to share their shop local experiences on social media, by snapping a photo of their favourite Macedon Ranges cafe, restaurant, shop or product and using the hashtag #ShopLocalMacedonRanges. Ms homas said while everyone played an important role to help stop the spread of coronavirus, everyone also played a part in helping small businesses that may have been hit hard inancially as a result of the pandemic. “I know many of our businesses, especially those that rely on visitors from Melbourne, have been hit hard by the coronavirus. “Our local small businesses have also been there when we have needed them, whether it be through sponsorship of our sport clubs or giving a helping hand to our community groups. “Now is a crucial time for us to return that support.” Ms homas encouraged locals to take a drive to one of their surrounding Macedon Ranges towns to make their purchases. New importance to Red Cross calling Victorians experiencing loneliness or social disconnection due to coronavirus will receive support from the Australian Red Cross and local community organisations with one call to the coronavirus hotline, thanks to a new Victorian government initiative. Disability, Ageing and Carers Minister Luke Donnellan has launched the Community Activation and Social Isolation initiative with more than $6 million over six months to support people experiencing loneliness or social disconnection as a result of coronavirus (COVID-19). he initiative is part of the Victorian government’s $59.4 million mental health and wellbeing package, helping Victorians with additional support to deal with signiicant changes to thier lives as a result of the pandemic. “he coronavirus pandemic has bought into even sharper focus the importance of community and social connections to improve health and wellbeing. his initiative is about people getting the help they need safely and locally,” Mr Donnellan said. ”If you’re feeling lonely, give the coronavirus hotline a call on 1800 675 398 and press three to speak to an Australian Red Cross volunteer who will provide a friendly ear and can connect you to support in your local community.” For many Victorians, physical distancing and social or work-related restrictions have led to feelings of loneliness and disconnection. For those already lonely or isolated before the pandemic, it’s been even harder to get help to

feel happy and well. he Community Activation and Social Isolation initiative will expand the Victorian coronavirus hotline (1800 675 398) by partnering with the Australian Red Cross whose volunteers have been trained in psychological irst aid to provide emotional support and help to callers who may be distressed or anxious. he hotline will also link people in need to community connectors for local practical supports and social activities, such as video chats, online book clubs or itness groups. To help older Victorians stay connected and participate in social activities during the pandemic, a Social Support Hub has also been set up at the Victorian government’s Seniors Online. Seniors can ind out what services and activities are available in their local area via the hub. he hub will be regularly updated with information and links to other community-based organisations ofering support and activities to older Victorians, including information about phone line support and local community connectors. n Taking care of your physical health will have a positive eﬀect on your mental health. n Take a walk, jump on your skateboard or take an online exercise class. n Do what feels right for you. n Reach out to your mates and hang out online or chat over the phone. n Having mates is good for your mental health and wellbeing and while we are physically distancing from one another, it doesn’t mean we need to be socially isolated.

Lengthy lockdown restrictions have been taking a toll on Victorians and grass-roots suicide prevention charity Hope Assistance Local Tradies wants to reach out more than ever. HALT, best known throughout Australia for its Save Your Bacon brekkies, information sessions and other events for tradespeople, is inding innovative ways to get the message to those that need it most. Founder and chief executive Jeremy Forbes says HALT North West Melbourne understands how challenging these times are for all. “More than ever we need to be aware of our mental health and the things we need to support our wellbeing,” he says. “COVID-19 has presented our communities with some unique and interesting challenges, which many may be struggling with. But there is plenty of support out there for people and we want to make sure people are accessing it.” The charity is committed to reducing the stigma associated with anxiety and depression and encourage everyone to seek help if needed. Jeremy says, with lockdown regulations across Melbourne, it’s important to check in with family, mates, colleagues and neighbours. HALT supports workplaces, sporting clubs, apprentices and community groups to have tough conversations. “We give people the tools to support their mate, whoever that is, to seek support and get the help they might need during this tough

It seems a little unfair that our “comies” can turn on us if we wear them for long periods, which is what many of us are doing – blissfully unaware of potential issues ahead.
