Buzz about fundraising The Werribee Hospital Foundation will host its irst virtual fundraiser, The BIG BUZZ Trivia Night, next month. The event will raise funds to upgrade the 24-hour Mental Health Crisis Line at Werribee Mercy Hospital, which is experiencing a rise in calls due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The online trivia night will include prizes for the winning team, best dressed and best team name. The foundation’s community engagement and fundraising manager, Lisa Field, said the family-friendly event would include ive rounds of general trivia. The ticket price for the night is $25 per device, with as many people as participants would like allowed on the one device. Ms Field said the foundation was also seeking business support and donations of prizes for the trivia night. The event will be held at 6.30pm on Friday, August 14. Goodbye to family man By Alesha Capone Geof Fitzgerald is being remembered as a devoted family man with a passion for bringing Christmas spirit to the community. Mr Fitzgerald, a long-time Hoppers Crossing resident, passed away on Friday at Werribee Mercy Hospital, from COVID-19. he 64-year-old father of three and grandfather of three, was well-known in the local area – along with his wife Jenny – for decorating their Macedon Street house and garden at Christmas time. Mrs Fitzgerald said their Christmas eforts
started with Geof putting a few lights in the front yard. “He started putting a couple of lights out the front, I said, ‘You’ve got to add in colour,’ and it took of from there,” she said. “he council used to close the street of for us every year. Once we had a choir and the Lions Club selling Christmas cakes.” he couple had stopped decorating their house in more recent years as their children grew older, and they travelled more. Mrs Fitzgerald described her husband as a “fantastic” person. “He would go work and come home to his
family, he was a real family man and loved his garden,” she said. As a younger man, Mr Fitgerald was employed at a glassworks in Spotswood and later started working for his son-in-law’s building business. Mrs Fitzgerald said she was unsure where her husband had contracted COVID-19. He was diagnosed with the lu and underwent a coronavirus test about four days later, which came back positive. He was admitted to hospital about 10 days before he died. Mrs Fitzgerald said Geof’s passing had made her incredibly sad.
“One day he was there, next day he’s not,” she said. Mr Fitzgerald is survived by his wife, their children Tina, Kristie and Jason, son-in-law Peter, daughter-in-law Jenny and grandchildren Matilda, Olivia and Eliza. he number of active coronavirus cases in Wyndham has risen by more than 150 in the past week. As of Tuesday, there were 535 active cases of the virus in Wyndham – the second highest number of cases in the state. Victoria has recorded more than 9,000 cases of coronavirus, according to DHHS.

Housing market remains strong he Victorian property market is holding irm in the face of COVID-19, according to the Real Estate Institute of Victoria. REIV president Leah Calnan last week said that despite predicted “doom and gloom”, the market was still going strong. “While there has been a small adjustment from the previous quarter, the market is in much better shape than it was in 2019 across all property types,” she said. Within Melbourne’s outer suburbs, Williams
Landing has had the largest increase in quarterly median house prices, jumping by 29.1 per cent between March and June to reach $832,500. In Tarneit, where there were less than 30 sales in the quarter, the median price increased by 8.6 per cent to $603,000. he median in Manor Lakes, where there was less than 30 sales, rose 2.8 per cent to $586,000. Median prices in Point Cook fell by two per cent (to $645,000), in Hoppers Crossing by 2.7 per cent (to $527,500) and by 7.7 per cent in Werribee (to $491,000).

Lythia Good didn’t plan on “making it a big thing” when she began sewing face masks. But ater she last week posted in the Point Cook Community Facebook page that she was sewing masks she has been inundated with orders. “I just wanted to help the community,” she said. “hen I had a huge inlux of orders. “It worked out, I think, to around 200 masks and still counting.” Ms Good said her partner Toby has been a “superstar”, helping her to cut up fabric and take orders. “I couldn’t do it without him, it’s a team efort,” she said. Ms Good said the biggest challenge was keeping up with demand, and sourcing fabric and elastic as supplies sell out across the state. She said her full-time work as a dental nurse meant she understood infection control. he outer section of her masks – which have three layers – are made up of cotton with polyester on the inside, which absorbs moisture so that particles will not spread. Ms Good said she would like to thank all the other sewers who are making face masks during the pandemic. “Other people that are doing this for the community, deserve the biggest praise ever,” she said. Wyndham council will no longer apply overdue charges to items borrowed from the municipality’s libraries. he council will also remove all existing overdue charges. Mayor Josh Gilligan said the council was also implementing an auto-renewal system, which would allow borrowers to have an item on loan for a set number of automatic renewals, or until an item is placed on hold. “We know that for residents on lower incomes, library charges can have a signiicant impact on their inancial situation and provide a barrier to borrowing items,” Cr Gilligan said. “While individual charges for overdue items may be small, this can make a big diference to the community, with a total of almost $100,000 worth of charges being paid in the 2018-19 year. “By removing these charges, we are ensuring that every Wyndham resident … can access materials that enrich their lives and allow them to participate in lifelong learning. his is even more important in the current environment.” Cr Gilligan said that the removal of library charges in other municipalities had been an overwhelming success, leading to an increase in returns and people signing up to become members. “I encourage all residents to take advantage of our free delivery services and 24/7 online library that has e-books, e-magazines, e-audiobooks, movies streaming, children’s educational games, study support and more,” he said. “For every $1 invested in public libraries, $4.30 is generated in beneit to the local community.” Details: www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/ services/libraries

Police are appealing for help following the recovery of a body from the Werribee River on July 15. Emergency services had attended the scene about 5.40pm the previous day, after reports a man had gone into the water near Chirnside Park. A kind gesture from a woman living interstate is helping to spread cheer in the Wyndham community. Owner and manager of Werribee Station Place Florist, Nella, said one of her staf members recently received a call from a woman living in Tasmania. he woman – who wishes to remain anonymous – ordered a bouquet of lowers, to put in the Werribee lorist shop’s window, to boost the spirits of residents during the COVID-19 lockdown. A card attached to the bouquet reads: “Dear Werribee community, We are thinking of you right now as things get tough again. We hope everybody keeps safe and in good spirits, and anyone who is ill recovers quickly. hese lowers are from us, to you! Love from your
friends in Tasmania, at Woodbridge, Kettering, Middleton and Bruny Island.” Nella, who has been running Werribee Station Place Florist for 19 years, said that she thought the Tasmanian lady’s gesture was lovely. “I thought it was great, I was really touched too,” Nella said. “It just made you feel like you’re not alone in the hard times ahead. Nella said some of her customers have commented on the lowers, and people have also stopped to look at the bouquet in the shop window. She said that since the second lockdown started, a lot of people have been sending lowers on special occasions that they cannot visit their loved ones, such as birthdays.

Vicki’s invincible spirit shines By Alesha Capone Whether she is jumping out of planes or getting a tattoo, Vicki Bellizzi has been living life to the full since recovering from breast cancer. “I’ve always said that I’m one of the lucky ones, because I survived,” the Point Cook mother of two said last week. “I’ve just got the scars and I don’t care about that.” In 2015, when she turned 49, Ms Bellizzi was encouraged by a friend to get a mammogram. She said she had already been thinking of undergoing screening because her sister had been diagnosed with breast cancer, at the age of 39. Ms Bellizzi said she showed no symptoms of the illness, but her mammogram revealed she had cancer in both of her breasts. She said she was “lucky” her cancer was diagnosed early on. Soon ater being diagnosed, Ms Bellizzi underwent a 12-hour double mastectomy and reconstruction. She spent Mother’s Day at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. “My kids came to see me, with tubes hanging out of me – it wouldn’t have been very nice for them, but I was very pleased to see them,” Ms Bellizzi said. She also underwent three months of chemotherapy, which caused her hair to fall out. Ms Bellizzi attended a ‘Look Good, Feel Better’ day hosted by the Cancer Council Victoria, which featured make-up artists and a Wigs on Wheels service. “I found a wig I liked and it was great, my kids would say to me, ‘How are you going to do your hair today, Mum?’” Ms Bellizzi said. Ms Bellizzi said that her best friend from Western Australia, Liz, came to support her

during her chemotherapy. She also wanted to thank her daughters, Jasmine, 17, and Holly, 14, for their support. Ms Bellizzi has returned to work as an operating theatre technician at Western Health and has also gotten a tattoo on her arm, showing a pin-up lady with muscly arms, which reads, “Fight like a girl” as a reminder of her ight. Since her recovery, she has gone on to
raise funds for the Cancer Council Victoria, including organising an event at Altona Bowling Club which raised about $2500. Aterwards, she and other Cancer Council members were invited to go skydiving. “It was bloody scary, I was OK until I had to jump out of the thing,” Ms Bellizzi said. Last year, she and her partner George also participated in a dragon boat training session with he Dragons Abreast crew, a group of
breast cancer survivors and supporters. Ms Bellizzi has encouraged residents to support the Cancer Council’s upcoming Dafodil Day Appeal, which will culminate in Dafodil Day on August 28. he Cancer Council Victoria is aiming to raise more than $300,000 for cancer research through online donations, during this year’s appeal. Call to protect passengers By Alesha Capone A politician has called for direct trains from Melbourne’s lockdown areas to regional areas, to help protect regional passengers from commuters living in lockdown suburbs and towns. Geelong radio station Bay FM last week reported that West Victorian MP Bev McArthur has also requested the state government consider introducing carriages reserved only for regional passengers on V/Line trains. Some regional V/Line trains travel through
Geelong to Wyndham Vale, Tarneit, Deer Park, Ardeer, Sunshine and Footscray. Ms McArthur said that if regional Victorians needed to travel to Melbourne for essential reasons, their risk of exposure to people from “highly-infected areas” – such as Wyndham – should be minimised. “Dedicated carriages for passengers boarding outside of the stage three restricted areas would be an efective solution to try to minimise intermingling of passengers,” Ms McArthur said. “Alternatively, direct trains that run express through suburbs that are
highly contaminated could be a good way to get regional Victorians in and out of the city with minimal contact with people from high risk areas.” A Department of Transport spokesperson said stage three “stay at home” restrictions are currently in place across metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire based on advice from Victoria’s Chief Health Oicer, with people only permitted to travel for the reasons of shopping for food and essential items; medical care and caregiving; and work and study, if they cannot do it from home. “Public transport services across the state
continue to run as normal to support those who need to make essential journeys,” the spokesperson said. “We’re keeping passengers and our frontline workers safe on public transport by cleaning high touch surfaces regularly and deep-cleaning trains, trams and buses every night. “We ask passengers to help us by travelling outside the peak, practising good hygiene, keeping distant from other commuters wherever possible and wearing masks when it is not possible.” he state government was contacted for comment.
Galvin Park works begin Work has begun on a $3.8 million redevelopment of the Galvin Park Soccer Pavilion in Werribee. he project will be undertaken over two stages, with stage one including early carpark works and construction of the irst part of the pavilion. Stage two, which is expected to begin in October, will include the demolition of the existing pavilion and construction of the second part of the new pavilion. Once complete, the facility will include a large community social room, six new change rooms, a kitchen and canteen, public toilets, modern referee facilities and new carparking spaces. It will also provide a space that is accessible for people with a disability, with three accessible toilet/shower rooms. he project is expected to be completed in mid-2021 however, construction timelines may be afected by COVID-19 restrictions.
Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan said the soccer pavilion redevelopment was the ith stage of the Galvin Park Master Plan roll-out. “In 2018 council demolished the reserve’s old tennis pavilion and built a new $2 million sports club and community pavilion,” Cr Gilligan said. “Last year, council invested a further $1.7 million into the facility for a new oval.” Wyndham’s sports development portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard, said the project would provide a new home for the Werribee City Soccer Club and the other community groups and schools that currently use this space. “he Galvin Park Soccer Pavilion will service four soccer pitches and will provide another great asset in Werribee that will help boost participation in sport,” Cr Maynard said. Youth weapons concerns By Alesha Capone Police have expressed concern ater inding teenagers as young as 13 carrying weapons in public areas of Wyndham, including knives and imitation irearms. A Victoria Police spokesperson said that last month, Wyndham police attended some reports of anti-social behaviour. he spokesperson said that at a “few incidents”, police had detected youths aged between 13-to-18-years-old “carrying weapons and dangerous articles in public places as a
means of self-defence”. “he weapons being carried by young people in these incidents include kitchen knives, pocket knives and imitation irearms,” the spokesperson said. “Serious injuries can occur when someone carries or uses a weapon and police need to ensure the safety of the broader community.” he spokesperson said police were conducting several ongoing operations to detect and deter knife crime, and to hold people carrying illegal weapons to account. “We are also working with local schools in
an efort to educate students directly in relation to weapons and personal safety strategies,” the spokesperson said. he spokesperson said Victoria Police encouraged parents and guardians to talk to their children about the legalities and safety risks associated with carrying weapons. New pizza store boosts local jobs A new Domino’s store due to open in Tarneit this week will create 20 jobs. Free hotline for COVID support Encompass Community Services has launched a free telephone hotline to support people during the coronavirus pandemic. he not-for-proit organisation has launched the hotline, with support from the Ecstra Foundation, for residents of areas including Greater Geelong, Wyndham, Bellarine Peninsula, Golden Plains Shire and Surf Coast Shire. he Encompass Coronavirus Assistance Hotline aims to provide guidance and individualised support to anyone seeking help during the pandemic. “he Coronavirus Pandemic has created many areas of uncertainty in everyday life for all Australians,” Encompass Community Services said in a media statement. “We are also aware that the sheer volume of information being received by the community through the media and other sources may cause you to feel overwhelmed and confused.” he hotline aims to help people who may be facing unemployment, experiencing inancial hardship and sufering from the COVID-19. People feeling anxious, depressed, isolated, generally confused, overloaded with information or just wanting a chat are also welcome to call. he phone line will operate between the hours of 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday, on 1800 943 055. Park construction prioritised under new council policy Wyndham council will require developers of new estates to deliver parks and open spaces at the same time as roads and other infrastructure, under a changed policy. Mayor Josh Gilligan said that he recently became aware that residents of the Rothwell East area in Tarneit were still awaiting construction of a park, which the council had approved back in February 2017. Rothwell Estate is owned by property developer Dacland. In the past, the council has allowed estate developers to provide a inancial bond, amounting to 150 per cent of the costs of the works of a park, before constructing the actual park or open space. Once the developer has constructed the park or open space to the council’s satisfaction, the bond is returned. However, under the changed policy, the council will remove the ability for developers to provide security bonds, instead requiring them to deliver parks and open spaces at the same time as roads and other infrastructure in order to get planning approval.
“A liveable city is one that sees parks and open space constructed at the same time as the estate roads to your new home,” Cr Gilligan said. “We’re now requiring developers to construct parks and open space at the same as roads and essential infrastructure for future estates in Wyndham.” Cr Gilligan said that in the case of the as-yet-unbuilt Rothwell park, the developer “has failed Rothwell residents by not delivering the park they’ve paid for and that’s why we’re intervening in this estate”. Off-lead dog areas under review By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has launched a review of of-leash dog parks across the municipality, to identify areas where new areas could be created. Mayor Josh Gilligan said the review was in response to requests from residents and land developers. “he review, which has only just begun, will identify the gaps in the provision of dog of-lead areas across the entire municipality, including Tarneit and Hoppers Crossing,” Cr Gilligan said. “his audit will then be used to develop a
list of potential sites for new dog of-lead areas that will address these gaps. “Council will undertake consultation with the community and other stakeholders once these proposed locations have been identiied.” According to the council’s website, there are 18 existing dog of-lead areas in Wyndham, including six in Hoppers Crossing, ive in Werribee, two in Wyndham Vale, one in Werribee South, one in Point Cook, one in Truganina and one in Laverton North. hese areas include at the back of the council’s civic centre in Werribee; part of

Farm safety a top priority A Werribee farmer and a lawyer have teamed up to help teach agricultural businesses about workplace safety. RMIT University lecturer and workplace safety lawyer Neil Salvador has joined forces with vegetable farmer Catherine Velisha to develop a hands-on education and training program for the industry’s business leaders and owners. he course will take place on-site at Ms Velisha’s Werribee South farm. Ms Velisha is managing director of the third-generation horticulture business, Velisha Farms.
She said that when she took over from her father, she inherited what she would describe as “a fear-based approach to compliance”. “Compliance was basically seen as hard to understand, a cost burden and another piece of red tape that makes the viability of farming all the more tenuous,” she said. “However, engaging with WorkSafe Victoria I have come to change my attitude towards compliance. It actually bolsters your business. It reduces risk, increases staf loyalty and it puts your business in a position where you can act as a leader – in your sector and in your

Wyndham council is calling for nominations of individuals and clubs which have made a diference to girls’ and women’s sport. he Wyndham Champions of Girls’ and Women’s Sport recognition program has ive categories: Young up-and-coming performers; Inspirational people or drivers of change; Coaches, umpires and referees who are role models; Clubs and organisations; and Elite performers. Nominees must have lived or trained in Wyndham, or be involved with a sports club in Wyndham, to be eligible. Each eligible nominee will be recognised with a certiicate and have their stories shared on the council’s website. Wyndham’s sports development portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard said the recognition program would celebrate inspirational athletes, coaches, umpires and club members. “Sport is a great way to have fun, keep in touch with friends and improve health and wellbeing, and by recognising those who have championed girls’ and women’s sport, and telling their stories, we want to inspire others to get involved,” Cr Maynard said. Applications close on Sunday, August 23. Eligible applicants will be announced at an online event in September. Reptile ramp provides extra wriggle room Werribee Open Range Zoo is ramping up the way it keeps resident snakes entertained. he zoo last week introduced a contraption dubbed the “snake ramp”, a two-metre ramp which attaches to the outside of the Dumeril’s boa snake exhibit. he ramp, on a 45-degree angle to the loor, provides a connecting bridge for the reptiles to explore their external environment. he ramp is itted with wooden pegs to encourage the boas to actively constrict and move their bodies, which are natural behaviours oten used by the reptiles to secure their prey. Keeper Malinda Delahant said the snake ramp was used by the reptiles for up to 30 minutes at a time and provided the Dumeril’s boas with a range of beneits. “he snake ramp gives the Dumeril’s boas choice and control,” she said. “hey’re able to stretch out and exercise and they can choose when they want to come out and engage with keepers. It’s really great
enrichment for them. “By giving these snakes the choice to come out willingly, it provides high-quality welfare.” Ms Delahant said the snakes were displaying positive behavioural signs, as a result of using the ramp. “Sometimes, they’ll be waiting for us at their exhibit doors, and when we open those doors they are choosing to engage in the activity,” she said. “hey are displaying relaxed behaviours and there’s a lot of tongue licking which indicates that they’re trying to get a sense of their new environment.” Werribee Open Range Zoo is home to four Dumeril’s boas, a species that is non-venomous and native to the coastal areas of Madagascar. hey can grow up to two metres in length and weigh up to nine kilograms. ATO income advice for those on JobKeeper JobKeeper payments on his behalf. he cafe continues operating as takeaway only and Ethan is given some hand sanitiser for use during his shits. He also purchases a face mask, which he is not reimbursed for. When he completes his tax return, he claims the cost of the face mask, ensuring he keeps his receipt as proof of his purchase. He also checks that his salary and wages and allowances on his income statement are up to date, including JobKeeper payments made to him by the cafe. Ethan needs to conirm that his total salary and wages and any allowances are included in his tax return. Generally, this will be included in his return by the ATO by the end of July and will include JobKeeper payments.
Taxpayers who have received JobKeeper payments from their employer, don’t need to do anything diferent. he payments will be included as salary and wages and/or allowances, in their regular income statement, which their employer provides directly to the Australian Taxation Oice. “Your income statement can be accessed via myGov and the information is automatically included into your tax return by the end of July. If you use a tax agent, they also have access to this information. he igures in your income statement should already include any JobKeeper you have received. If you aren’t sure, check with your employer,” advised ATO assistant commissioner Karen Foat. Sole traders who have received the JobKeeper payment on behalf of their business will need to include the payments as assessable income for the business. If you have received JobSeeker, the ATO will also load this information into your tax return at the Government Payments and Allowances question once it’s ready. If you are lodging before this information is included for you, you will need to make sure you include it. Leaving out income can slow your return down or result in a bill later so it’s deinitely best avoided.

Nineteen inch alloy wheels, Adaptive LED headlights, High Beam Assist and Driving Assistant Professional are now standard on the 520i. he 520i is powered by a 2.0-litre inline four cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine, which produces 135kW and 290Nm, and is mated to an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. he 2.0-litre inline four cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine of the 530i produces 185kW and 350Nm, it is itted with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission that provides a wider gear ratio spread. BMW’s advanced 530e Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) matches a 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder TwinPower Turbo with a synchronous electric motor that is fully integrated into the gearbox. Driving he front seats are comfortable, though some might prefer them to have more support in corners. he rears have decent legroom though. he 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine pulls strongly with little lag. he CVT automatic is
well-matched to the engine with the option of paddle shiting for manual control if required. Latest generation Honda G-Design shit logic aids acceleration and has a more positive driving touch with reduced turbo lag. he ride is rather irm at times and quite noisy on harsh surface. On the open road Civic grips well in corners and is happy to change direction. Fuel consumption is oicially listed at 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres. We averaged in the eight to nine litre range around town and six to seven in the country and on motorways.
Summing up he gen-ten Honda Civic looks great and has a reined feel.
