Virus numbers rise By Ewen McRae Ater weeks of low COVID-19 numbers, Melton has seen a spike in active cases. Mirroring similar rises in neighbouring Brimbank, the Melton municipality jumped from just two active cases on June 21 to 16 cases as of July 5. Melton has experienced the 11th highest number of cases among Victorian local government areas. A number of cases have been in local schools including 14 cases linked to Albanvale Primary School as of last hursday. Of those 14 cases, one is a student who was a close contact of the original case, and another is a household contact of a known case. Creekside College in Caroline Springs had a conirmed case and Springside Primary School had three conirmed cases. Both schools were to be deep cleaned over the holidays and contact tracing was to occur. here have been 59 cases linked to Al-Taqwa College in Truganina. While Albanvale was one of 10 Victorian coronavirus hotspots to be locked down again last week, no other suburbs within the Melton municipality have had restrictions increased. Additional testing sites have opened up nearby, including at the Caroline Springs Bunnings store. Victoria’s chief health oicer, professor Brett Sutton said it was vital residents got tested. “his virus is not selective, it will impact anyone it encounters, and personal contact is the clear source of its transmission,” professor Sutton said. “We need everyone to do their part and ensure it is stopped in its tracks. “here is no excuse for not getting tested. We have people knocking on your door, coming to your neighbourhood – we are bringing the testing to you. here are also several drive-through and ixed sites where people can go. “We have made some great progress in slowing the spread of coronavirus, but we are still seeing new cases in the community. “Don’t take this disease lightly. If you feel unwell with any symptoms of coronavirus, however mild, you should stay home and get tested.” ■ Return

said. “he month of June has seen a three-fold increase in sales at projects in Melbourne’s north and north west, which not only helps builders but a host of sub consultants such as designers, engineers and town planners that at the outset of the COVID-19 crisis we were considering putting on hold.” Mr Payten said the group had sold eight home sites for about $2 million at Kerani Heights in the new suburb of Fraser Rise, adjacent to Caroline Springs, in the past month alone. It had also sold 40 blocks for about $11

million at its Trijena residential project in the Mickleham region. “he surprising aspect is that our mix of buyers is 80 per cent of people that qualify for the building grant and 20 per cent that don’t,” Mr Payten said “We are deinitely seeing conidence in the market and that is largely a result of the federal government stimulus and the quality of product on ofer at an afordable price. “he Potter George Group has now brought future stages forward as a result of the strong demand and market conidence.”

Salmonella warning

Support for cancer patients It was supposed to be the happiest of times, but in June last year Alana Romeo’s life changed forever. Just ive weeks ater marrying the love of her life and two days before her honeymoon, Ms Romeo discovered she had breast cancer. She had visited a local doctor in Hillside who examined her lump and told her it was fat. But the lump began to grow and Ms Romeo decided to get a second opinion before leaving for her European honeymoon. She was diagnosed with HER2 negative and HR positive cancer, common for women who are in their 40s – Ms Romeo is 27.

It may be a life-changing experiece, but Ms Romeo was determined to not let it beat her. “I had two grade three tumours, inding the second one in my irst ultrasound,” she said. “My world was completely turned upside down. I completed four rounds of hardcore chemotherapy however decided that I would return to school in term four. “I did chemotherapy once a week and taught full-time at my high school in Hoppers Crossing.” A year on from diagnosis, Ms Romeo is turning her attention to helping other women going through a similar journey.

“Right ater I had my mastectomy I decided I needed to share my story with others,” she said. “I wanted to share the whole experience from the side efects of chemotherapy to what I used during treatment including skin care, diet and how to put on a scarf.” She started an Instagram page Life.of.lana.26 and began blogging on her website Lifeolana.net. “I make an efort to respond to anyone who messages me about their own experiences and have helped a few women who have recently been diagnosed,” Ms Romeo said.

Residents keeping chickens in their backyards have been warned to educate themselves about safe fowl handling practices. he Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) issued the warning last week, ater being notiied of nine cases of Salmonella Enteritidis within a two-month period. he DHHS said it was working with Agriculture Victoria to investigate the cases, ive of which occurred in people who had contact with backyard chickens or who ate eggs from household locks. Most of the people diagnosed live in separate households across Melbourne’s western and northern suburbs, with cases also in Gippsland and western Victoria. Agriculture Victoria has also conirmed that Salmonella Enteritidis has been detected at a commercial egg farm, which is under quarantine. It is understood end-of-lay chickens from this farm were sold to one of the afected backyard locks. Victoria’s deputy chief health oicer, Dr Angie Bone, said people could be at risk of Salmonella infection if they did not wash their hands thoroughly ater handling chickens or coming into contact with the birds’ environment, or if they ate raw or under-cooked eggs. Dr Bone said people should discard cracked, damaged or heavily soiled eggs and clean lightly soiled eggs with a dry cloth or a tissue. Do not wash eggs with water, as this makes them porous and can enable bacteria on the surface to penetrate the shell. Police are appealing for information following an assault at the intersection of Coburns and Barries roads, Melton at 12.20pm on June 29. The male victim was driving a grey Ford Falcon sedan and stopped at the trafic lights when a green utility pulled in front of him. Online food delivery service, iPantry gave away up to 3000 muins last week as part of a food relief initiative. A man who claimed his speedometer was frozen after being caught driving at more than 20km/h over the speed limit has had his licence suspended for three months. Police said the man was detected driving at 132km/h in an 110km/h zone on the Wetsern Freeway about 8.50am on June 28. Police said the man told them he didn’t realise he was speeding because his speedometer had frozen at 110km/h. The man was also issued with a penalty notice. Later that day, a 29-year-old Melton West man had his car impounded for 30 days after he was detected driving at 153km/h. By Ewen McRae Western Victoria MP Beverley McArthur has shown senior Liberal MPs around Bacchus Marsh, as the ight against the potential dumping of contaminated soil continues. On June 26, Ms McArthur showed shadow minsters Tim Smith and Richard Riordan around the town, including visits with Moorabool council, Bacchus Marsh Grammar, local residents and a look at the site at Maddingley Brown Coal that is under consideration to receive contaminated soil from the WestGate Tunnel Project. Ms McArthur, who has voiced her opposition to the proposal for several months, said it was important that other members of her party understood the concerns of the town and her constituents. “I wanted my colleagues to experience irst-hand just how dangerously absurd this proposal is,” Ms McArthur said. “It is not until you stand by the site, at the top of the hill, and look down to the Parwan Creek below, that you realise how patently unsuitable the area is for any kind of waste, let alone soluble chemicals which can leach into waterways. “It is already hard to believe that this tip can operate in such proximity to schools and residential properties. he idea its operations should be allowed to extend so much further, and to include the on-site classiication of seriously polluted material and the subsequent storage of toxic PFAS-afected soil is a nightmare.” he proposal to take toxic soil to MBC is currently under consideration by Planning Minister Richard Wynne. A inal decision on where the soil will be taken will be made by Transurban.

Ms McArthur said her frustrations were felt by the council and the community. “he deep frustration of the mayor and council oicers was absolutely evident to us,” she said. “hey are ighting hard to get the best for their people, but are faced at every turn with a state government which seems likely to usurp

local planning powers but oload enforcement responsibility, refuses to supply relevant information to council, demands impossible timescales, and is failing to ensure community consultation. “We took away the strongest message that the community is united against this proposal.”

With movement restrictions making things tough for local businesses of all sorts, the council-run Open for Business campaign has seen more than 300 stores and companies receive assistance and support. his has included free A-frames to advertise on, promotion on council websites, and additional support to help them maximise their business. Platinum Accounting & Taxation was one of the businesses to receive support, and partner Corinne Cole said the program had helped them reach more people than they would have previously, especially with information about government inancial support in the early days of the pandemic. “he campaign did result in favourable results for us and we have generated new business as a direct result of the ad,” Ms Cole said. “We didn’t have a ‘special ofer’ noted in our ad as many of the other businesses did, so what we did instead was make mention of our new podcast which, at the time of the advertisement, we had not oicially launched to our database and target audience. “We were just about to launch the podcast which was speciically designed to help small business and taxpayers, when the pandemic hit, so we had to change it up a bit.” Ms Cole said the response to the campaign and the new podcast had been huge. “We were able to explain to listeners how things like JobKeeper were going to work, and that really helped people,” she said. “Our download numbers went up tremendously, and the feedback from people was that many had found us through the council advertisements.

Hundreds of extra cleaners are set to hit the streets of Melton, under a new state government program to slow the spread of COVID-19. he state government is creating short-term positions for 1500 cleaners who will work across 10 regional and 26 suburban communities, cleaning public infrastructure, retail centres and shopping strips to help build community conidence as the staged liting of restrictions begins. Workers will disinfect and wipe down external surfaces such as street benches, handrails and door handles, traic light buttons, poles, bicycle stands and bins. Minister for Jobs Martin Pakula said the program would provide valuable work for those in need, as well as providing a valuable service for the community. “his blitz provides immediate work and wages to people who need it most, so they can pay the bills while they search for more permanent positions,” Mr Pakula said. “We’re taking the irst cautious steps when it comes to easing restrictions, and the jobs that will be done as part of this program are an important part of that process.” Moorabool will also receive state government support to help boost community outreach, including more meals on wheels drivers and in-house carers for vulnerable residents. Business calls for support By Tate Papworth Brimbank Business Association president Daniel Dalli has urged the state government to invest in Brimbank long term. On Tuesday Premier Daniel Andrews reimposed lockdown measures across a number of Brimbank suburbs. While not all businesses within Brimbank will be forced to shut, Mr Dalli said all will be impacted. “Lots of businesses which initially shut down invested costs into reopening, now those costs are wasted,” Mr Dalli said. “It’s the worst thing that could have happened and it has happened … mainly for businesses in those postcodes but it’s damaging for the wider community as well. “Tourists may avoid these areas because of the stigma of being called hotspots.” He welcomed the government’s $5000 grant announcement, but said it would only go so far. “We need ongoing support for businesses,” he said. “Moving forward, this is likely to hamper businesses from what was starting to become a positive environment. “hat momentum will obviously be lost and with that we expect a big problem with unemployment, which is already disproportionate to the Melbourne average, to rise.” Master Cutterz Hair Studio owner Rachel Vella agreed the grants should be extended. “It’s just heartbreaking, especially for small business,” she said. “here seems to be a lack of support though. Keilor is not in lockdown, but a large number of our clients are in lockdown … most of the neighbouring suburbs are. “Business in Keilor is going to sufer just as much, we don’t just service people in Keilor, but we’re not eligible for that support.”

While concerned about what a second round of lockdown would bring, Ms Vella said her loyal customer base was cause for much optimism. “We’ve been grateful we’ve been able to

operate and our number one priority has been safety. We really started to bounce back ater the irst round of lockdowns. I’m sure we’ll get back to where we were, but we’ve got to really reach out for people to shop local.”

Council facilities close again A number of council facilities andservices have been forced back into closing ater the state government reimposed stay at home restrictions on a number of suburbs. In line with the restrictions, the council is temporarily closing facilities such as libraries, neighbourhood houses, playgrounds, skate parks, outdoor exercise equipment areas and barbecue facilities within the suburbs named by the government. Sporting facilities within the restricted suburbs are also closed and the advice is that people from the restricted suburbs are not able to participate in community sport. he restrictions are in place for Brimbank postcodes 3038, 3012, 3042 and 302. Brimbank mayor Cr Georgina Papafotiou said the council was aiming to provide some of the online services that had been successful in supporting the community during the previous closures. “We need to support each other during this time. While only some Brimbank suburbs are in the state government restricted list, we’re asking all community members to follow the advice of the health authorities, to use common sense in any decision making about what you’re doing and where you’re going, and to get tested if they have any symptoms,” Cr Papafotious said.

Carers left to go it alone By Tate Papworth For many residents a return to lockdown is tough. For carers and those with a disability it’s tougher still. Keilor Downs resident Despina Havelas is a full-time carer for her 19-year-old son Kon, who is on the autism spectrum. Ms Havelas has long been an advocate for better carer support within Brimbank and said prolonged periods of isolation have exacerbated the issues. “here’s a real struggle with ability to ind workers with the NDIS and have workers [COIVID-19] tested to come in to the house at this time,” she said. “Finding activities within the house to do is hard … someone sufering autism struggles with one-on-one activities. “Kon’s anxiety has increased, he doesn’t have answers and doesn’t know where to get them. “We don’t have someone come in, so all he sees is in media and it being reported how bad this area is.” Ms Havelas said her son has battled high anxiety, an increase in “behaviours”, loss of appetite and disrupted sleeping patterns as a result of the pandemic. It’s also been a battle for Ms Havelas as a carer. “I’m feeling isolated … I’ve lost the ability to catch up and talk with other carers and support services like Carers Victoria haven’t even checked in with a phone call to see how I’m doing.” She called for all levels of government to provide support programs for carers. “From what I’m seeing, my governments aren’t putting support into me,” she said. “I’m let to deal with COVID in isolation … I haven’t seen the extra support.”

Residents react to lockdown Brimbank residents forced back into lockdown by the state government say they understand the reasons, but are angry the situation came to this. Keilor Downs resident Sharon Munro said having a child who is of “high risk” when it comes to COVID-19 made it easier to accept the reimposed restrictions. “I was expecting it to come a week ago, hopefully it’s not too late,” Ms Munro said. “I’m trying to remain positive. I have a child who is high risk … so we’ve really only been going out for the essentials. “We’re in this for the long haul so it’s frustrating when we see people ignoring the rules.” Fellow Keilor Downs resident Prue Brigham agreed with the decision, but feared people from “hot spots” may be discriminated against. “I feel we’re soon coming to a point – even when we can cross borders – we may be subjected to tougher restrictions than people not in these areas,” Ms Brigham said. “I heard over 900 people refused to be tested by door knockers. I’m quite upset and angry when I hear that. “We don’t want … this illusion we’re all doing the wrong thing. I’ve done everything in my power to do the right thing.” Keilor resident Rosa Bruno hasn’t been forced into lockdown, but said the rules would impact her community regardless. “he local economy is going to take a big hit, but the cost of not doing this is people’s lives.” Tate Papworth

It’s great to see so much interest in the service already, with many of you eager to find out more and start a new green waste habit. By simply throwing your food scraps and garden clippings in the green bin, you’ll help halve the amount of waste we send to landfill.

Last week, we began a new service that allows residents to put all food scraps into their kerbside green bins. It’s part of Council’s Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) plan to help halve the amount of waste households send to landfill.

If you have any COVID-19 symptoms or you’ve been in contact with someone who is unwell, you should seek advice and get tested.

You can now put all loose (not bagged) food scraps into the green bin. This includes: • fruit and vegetable scraps • egg shells • meat and bones

The FOGO service was introduced by Council after an audit revealed that about half of the waste thrown into the red bin by a typical City of Melton household was food and garden material.

Together, we can easily reduce pressure on landfill space by simply using our household green bins for food scraps. It’s important to note that bags, including compostable bags, will not be accepted in the green bin as they cannot be processed by the composting facility, so please only put loose food scraps into the bin.

Art trail could drive tourism By Ewen McRae Moorabool council will investigate the possibility of an art trail along the Western Freeway as a way of encouraging tourism in the region. Councillor Jarrod Bingham raised the idea as a notice of motion at last week’s meeting, hoping to tie the trail in with the arts oicer position that council has funded in the past 12 months. Cr Bingham said he hoped a series of art

installations could liven up the shire and also boost the local economy. “he Western Freeway runs through the heart of Moorabool Shire Council and an arts trail would give motorists another excuse to pull over and rest for 15 [minutes] so that they can carry on their journey refreshed and safely,” he said. “I want to target those motorists, holidaymakers, tourists and caravaners who travel this long and straight freeway with nothing to see along the way, I want to say to

people ‘hey, come in to our beautiful towns and hamlets, explore our history and spend some money in our local community.’ “his arts trail has the ability to promote our rich heritage and culture through these murals.” Cr Bingham said existing infrastructure, such as silos, water tanks and other structures, would be ideal for the trail. Cr Paul Tatchell expressed concern about the plan, saying the scale of it needed to be considered.

“We’re talking about a very large area that would have to be covered,” he said. “I think trying to compare an arts trail with a couple of silos in a small town that have been painted magniicently to a theme is a lot diferent to trying to do a whole shire. “It could run into a very large bill if someone objected to the art … it’s just a bit wishy-washy for me.” he motion passed and will now be considered as part of the council’s overall arts strategy.

Puppy appeal Petbarn Caroline Springs is raising funds for the Seeing Eye Dogs Appeal all month. As part of a nationwide campaign that aims to raise more than $500,000 to help cover the costs of breeding, training, and caring for at least ten Seeing Eye Dogs, the store is calling on the community to help out. Petbarn Caroline Springs store manager, Melissa Hancock said the appeal was an important part of their annual activities. “Seeing Eye Dogs do more than just allow Australians with vision loss to retain their independence and mobility – they provide companionship, alleviate the efects of social isolation and contribute to all-round better quality of life,” Ms Hancock said. “Seeing Eye Dogs is just another example of how animals can enrich our lives. We encourage everyone to visit our Petbarn stores or donate online to help continue to provide these special assistance dogs to people in the community.”

It costs more than $50,000 and takes up to two years to train a Seeing Eye Dog. Training begins when the dog is still a puppy and involves teaching them basic socialisation skills and obedience. On maturity, each dog receives up to six months of expert training with a specialised instructor. Vision Australia Seeing Eye Dogs general manager Graeme Craig said they were grateful for all the community support they receive each year. “Our partnership with he Petbarn Foundation is integral to helping our Seeing Eye Dogs pups complete the extensive training they require,” Mr Craig said. “It takes a lot of expertise, time, love, patience and funding to raise these special dogs.” Donations can be made in store until August 2, or online at petbarn.com.au/seda Ewen McRae

By Ewen McRae For 150 years, the Royal Children’s Hospital has been providing families and children with the best possible health care, and a Caroline Springs artist is doing her bit to say thank you. Audrey Buttigieg Cardona is painting one of the 100 sculptures that will form a new art trail next year as part of the hospital’s 150th anniversary celebrations, bringing some of her Maltese heritage to the massive showcase. he art trail is titled ‘Me and UooUoo’, and will feature 100 distinctive ibreglass sculptures called UooUoos that will be painted by 100 diferent artists before being displayed across Melbourne and Geelong.

New schools in Rockbank and Eynesbury are getting closer to completion, and the public can now have their say on what they will be called. he state government has put out a number of options for the names of the two schools. he government is looking for a school name that relects the local community, inspires local pride and makes the school easily locatable. he Eynesbury Station Primary School (interim name) is set to open its doors for term one, 2021, and four name options have been put forward for voter consideration. he options are Worronkai Primary School, Nyallingoo Primary School, Eynesbury Primary School, and the current interim name. Worronaki is an indigenous word for kangaroo grass, which is prominent in the area, while Nyallingoo means ‘follow us’ in the local indigenous language. Rockbank North Primary School (interim name) has three options for the public to vote on, all of which relect the local area. Under consideration are Aintree Primary School, Drystone Primary School, and Red River Gum Primary School. Calling out abuse By Alesha Capone People who call triple-0 to request police help are routinely heaping abuse, threats and inappropriate sexual remarks on employees of the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA). About 70 per cent of calls seeking police assistance involve the operators being abused, according to the ‘I am 000’ podcast. Two call-takers who work at the ESTA centre in Williams Landing, Erin and Kate, were recently interviewed for the podcast, discussing the abuse they receive on a daily basis. Snippets of ofensive and foul-mouthed calls to triple-0 are included in the podcast, and are sometimes harrowing listening. Podcast host Tania Willett said she hoped this particular episode of the ‘I am 000’ series would raise awareness of the abuse ESTA police call-takers receive. “It is diicult to hear that police call-takers, who are there to help in an emergency, are being sworn at and verbally abused by callers,” Ms Willett said. “Hearing those triple-0 calls can be quite confronting but it does show the reality of what these calls can be like.” Amy Kimber has worked at ESTA for more than 13 years. She began as a police call-taker and is now executive manager operations at Williams Landing. Mrs Kimber said that when people called triple-0 they were oten experiencing a traumatic situation, and abuse could come about because they were scared, angry or panicked. But she said the abuse ESTA call-takers received did not always come from callers in risky or emotional situations, and that harassment was “quite common across all calls”. “hreats to call-takers themselves are quite common,” she said. “Oten call-takers might

get asked if they have children and a family and the caller might make threats towards them. “We can also get calls from people making sexually inappropriate comments, which can be quite traumatic for our call-takers.” Mrs Kimber said that ESTA call-takers were provided with customer service and call control training, which she said was important for all employees, both new and experienced. “We do have support services available and we reinforce that if call-takers need, they can use our peer support program and our employee assistance program, which provides access to clinical counsellors,” she said. “We encourage call-takers to take a deep breath, take a few minutes to compose themselves ater a challenging call, and when they’re ready to face another call, then they can

do so.” Mrs Kimber said that for new ESTA call-takers, oten their irst six to 12 months in the job established whether it was the type of work for them or not. “Call-takers get into the role because they want to help the community and work for a purpose,” she said. “In the irst few months they will establish whether they can cope with the role, which does include the constant verbal abuse from callers.” Mrs Kimber said she believed the general public would be surprised to learn of the amount of harassment ESTA call-takers received. “People wouldn’t normally treat others so poorly face-to-face, so our call-takers can be seen as easy targets being only a voice on the phone,” Mrs Kimber said.

New footage in body in creek case By Alesha Capone Homicide Squad detectives have released new information as part of their investigation into the death of Shu Jian Lim, whose body was found dumped in Mount Cottrell almost ive years ago. Detectives are today releasing CCTV from a water treatment plant near where Mr Lim’s body was found at Cobbledicks Ford Reserve. he footage shows vehicles travelling past one of the exit routes of the reserve. Police are hopeful that someone may be able to identify one of these vehicles and provide further information.

Oicer in charge of the Homicide Squad, Detective Inspector Tim Day, said he was hopeful the passage of time would beneit the investigation. “Five years is a long time to wait for a family to get answers, but we’re hopeful that ive years is now the right time for us to get an answer,” he said. Lim’s body was found wrapped in a black plastic sheet by university students conducting research at the creek at the reserve, on September 17, 2015. Despite a number of public appeals by police in the days following the discovery, they were unable to identify the deceased.

In October 2015, following a DNA test, the body was formally identiied as Shu Jian Lim. he 26-year-old Point Cook man had been reported missing by his sister in March 2015. Lim was last seen at a friend’s house at Covent Gardens in Point Cook on February 20, 2015. Police have been told he let the property about 5pm in his silver Toyota sedan with the Victorian registration XHS 070. he vehicle was later found on Allen Street, Laverton ater a local resident complained it had been dumped. Police were told an unidentiied Asian male, believed not to have been Lim, was seen parking the silver Toyota in the street on or

around February 20, 2015 – the same date that Lim was last seen alive. hat person then got into a light coloured small 4WD, possibly a Toyota, driven by another male. Despite a ive-year investigation, no-one has been charged in relation to Lim’s death. “One avenue of inquiry for investigators has been that Lim’s death is possibly connected to a drug syndicate that was operating in the area at the time,” Detective Day said. Melton foodies can start preparing their taste buds, with a new cafe famous for it’s monster milkshakes coming in late 2020. he Jolly Miller Cafe is expanding into Melton, bringing its instagrammable creations to the west for the irst time as one of four new stores in Victoria. New stores will also open in Manor Lakes and Tarneit, while a Croydon store opened last week. he new locations are expected to create about 80 jobs across the four stores. Jolly Miller Group co-founder, Rimon Barber said they were looking forward to joining the Melton community later in the year. “We are all about the local community and that is what has led to our success; we create an ambience and a place where people want to meet and connect with one another, we like to see ourselves as makers of memorable moments,” Mr Barber said. he cafe has become famous in the inner suburbs of Melbourne for its milkshake creations, along with mouth-watering breakfasts and a vegan-friendly menu. Despite challenging times for the hospitality industry, Mr Barber said the success of their stores throughout the pandemic was a positive for those communities. “Even though we opened our doors in the middle of a pandemic and with no dine-in option throughout April and May, we kept our doors open to serve the community and they supported us from the outset,” he said. “We believe the current climate will make our cafes stronger. As a suburban-based model, we’re inding more people are staying in their local areas and spending on items at cafes, ater all – everyone still needs to eat and drink.”

Rockbank Primary School was a sea of pink in the inal days of term 2, as it raised important funds for breast cancer. he school encouraged staf and students to dress in pink for the day, and contribute a gold coin donation towards breast cancer research. Organising teacher Diana Razmovski said the day was a huge success on the fundraising front, but was also a good chance to educate students about the disease and its impact. “We thought it was a good cause, and a good chance to raise some money for that,” Ms Razmovski said. “Every little bit helps with something like this. We did something similar last year as well … it’s always well received by the school community. “We had kids in pink clothes and pink wigs, and we discussed some stats and how many women die from this every every year, as well as the success rate and what the money would go towards. “he kids were all really engaged and got something out of it I think.” he school raised $278 on the day. Ms Razmovski said the school hoped to increase the fundraising target next year. “he parents have been very supportive of this initiative, and the kids love to make a diference,” she said. Tree helps brighten day for students Anyone visiting the Maddingley campus of Bacchus Marsh Grammar last term would have noticed an extra dash of colour on one of the most prominent trees. he ‘Grandpa Tree’ has been transformed over recent months with decorations, artwork and messages to brighten up the day of everyone who comes near it. he tree, which was already a long-standing and popular part of the schoolyard, began its transformation while remote learning was taking place, and junior school art teacher Ali Weir said the reaction to it had been overwhelming. “It was a little project we started as a way 16 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 7 July, 2020

of reconnecting with our students and giving them a special place within the school to be,” she said. “While we were in lockdown and teaching remotely a lot of the teachers were at the school, and we worked together to start this. “Once the students came back they were able to hang some messages of their own on the tree and it’s become a bit of a magnet for the students to be around such a happy place.” Whether it is a meeting place at recess, a place to enjoy lunch, or just to sit under its shady branches, the Grandpa Tree is now a hive of activity. It has become an ongoing project for art

students of all ages and Ms Weir said it will continue to be a prominent and popular part of the school. “It’s just a really nice and happy place,“ she said. “It’s in a very high traic area of the school, so you will never ind it alone. It puts it into perspective that whether it’s a little six-year-old prep or one of the older kids, if you read the messages on the tree you see that we’re all in the same situation at the moment. “I think because of the way the students have engaged with the tree we will ind lots of ways of continuing something like this.” Ewen McRae

50 years in the sky By Tate Papworth It may be experiencing unprecedented quiet times, but that didn’t stop Melbourne Airport from celebrating a major milestone. he airport marked 50 years of operation last week. On July 1, 1970, then Prime Minister Sir John Gorton oicially declared the airport open, with the inaugural Qantas (QF530) international light taking of to San Francisco. he airport was initially built for aviation and leisure purposes and included a 300-seat cinema, an Astrojet Space and Science Centre, an observation deck, shops, cafes and bars. Since then the airport’s footprint has expanded, growing from three terminals to four, facilitating holidaymakers, business travellers and the movements of freight and goods. Since that day 50 years ago, Melbourne Airport has seen more than three quarters of a billion travellers ly in and out, with the domestic market accounting for 600 million passengers and international 169 million people. Melbourne Airport chief executive Lyell Strambi said he was proud of how the airport had developed over the decades. “When the airport irst opened it was iconic for the whole state,” Mr Strambi said. “It created opportunity for people to reach destinations that they could previously only dream of. “Our continued focus on the traveller experience is what has enabled Melbourne Airport to endure the test of time.” While the airport is in the midst of challenging times bought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr Strambi said he looked forward to the day the community was able to once again take to the sky. “We have a strong team, dedicated to the growth of the business and to the continuous planning for the future,” Mr Strambi said. “he airport continues to grow and evolve with Melbourne.
