A welcome message A mosaic artwork celebrating the courage and contribution of people from refugee backgrounds has been installed at Thomas Carr College. The artwork, titled We Welcome Refugees, was designed by student Olivia Papavero as part of a Refugee Week competition run by the college in 2017. The design was transformed into an artwork by local artist Julie Stevens and unveiled at the school during Refugee Week this year. The mosaic aims to send a message of welcome and belonging to students from a refugee background. College principal Craig Holmes said: “We are an inclusive school community open to others through our strong Catholic values. “I congratulate Olivia and all involved in producing this thoughtful installation.” Wyndham council provided funds to help develop the mosaic project. Mayor Josh Gilligan, who attended the unveiling, said the mosaic was a strong reminder of why Australia “really is the lucky country”.

Budget cash for roads By Alesha Capone Wyndham council is proposing to spend $103.8 million on capital works as part of its 2020-21 budget, with big-ticket items including upgraded roads, new cells at Werribee tip and repairs to the Eagle Stadium roof. he council proposes a budgeted operating surplus of $157.3 million, however ater depreciation and amortisation the city would be let with a $50.3 million deicit. Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan said the council remained in a “robust inancial position”. At a meeting last Tuesday, several councillors noted that the COVID-19 pandemic had afected the budget, with a decrease in revenue

from sports facilities and other sources since March. Councillors said it was important to balance the needs of the growing municipality with a “balanced approach” to the pandemic. Cr Gilligan said the council was planning to spend $11.75 million to reconstruct and resurface roads, including $1 million to duplicate Tarneit Road between Sayers and Leakes roads. he council has allocated $1 million for widening roads in Little River and $1.5 million to upgrade the Boundary Round and Derrimut Road intersection. he budget proposes $9 million for the design and construction of cell six at the Werribee

tip, and $4 million for the construction of cell seven. An additional $4 million has been allocated for rectiication works at Eagle Stadium’s roof, which for years has been leaking on days of heavy rainfall. “We will go ater the parties that are responsible for this defect and we will recoup the cost, of what we can, to ratepayers,” Cr Gilligan said. he council is also proposing to spend $10.2 million to construct two new children’s centres at Truganina and Tarneit North; $4.8 million on the construction of Riverdale Community Centre, Tarneit; $3.5 million on new soccer facilities at Galvin Park; $1.5 million on the

K Road Clifs Masterplan implementation; and $950,000 for a new carpark, pavilion and landscaping at Bensonhurst Parade Reserve. he budget includes the previously announced $5 million WynLocal Economic Support package, comprising $1.5 million in business support grants for local traders as they emerge from the pandemic. he budget proposes setting the mayor’s annual allowance at $100,434 and councillor allowances at $31,444 per annum. Council rejects rates waiver bid By Alesha Capone Wyndham Cr Intaj Khan says he is “gobsmacked” his suggestion to introduce a $100 waiver on upcoming council rates was rejected by several councillors. Cr Khan moved a motion at last week’s council meeting to provide a $100 fee waiver on 2020-21 council rates, for each property located in the municipality. Forming part of the meeting agenda, the motion called for the fee waiver to help the many residents who have had their employment

afected by the coronavirus pandemic. Speaking at the meeting, Cr Khan said the council’s proposed budget for 2020-21 included a $157.3 million surplus. Providing each household with $100 of their rates would take about $10 million of the surplus. Cr Heather Marcus said she would support the motion because of the hardship the pandemic had caused in Wyndham. In April, Cr Khan suggested a similar motion which would have cut about $21 million from council’s annual rates revenue. hat motion failed to pass council.

Cr Peter Maynard described Cr Khan’s latest motion as “absolutely ridiculous”. Cr Henry Barlow said that although the council’s proposed budget had a $157.3 million surplus, once depreciation was taken into account the budget actually had a deicit of $50.3 million. He said the council had already established a $5 million WYNLocal Economic Support Package, including a hardship policy for residents, due to the pandemic. All but three councillors – Cr Khan, Cr Marcus and Cr Walter Villagonzalo – voted

Aterwards, Cr Khan told Star Weekly: “I have been let gobsmacked with seven out of ten of my fellow councillors, who have blocked the resolution which could have saved struggling Wyndham ratepayers, due to the current COVID-19 pandemic situation. “In my personal view those councillors that have voted against the … $100 rate cut has lost the opportunity to support the ratepayers of Wyndham City Council. he ratepayer mums and dads of Wyndham …will remember them when they are paying the council rates”.

Truganina family virus outbreak

Werribee’s Daniela Lim has written a free online children’s story and activity book, which explains the COVID-19 pandemic. Ms Lim said she created the book, titled Mia the Magpie and Rex the Rabbit Fight the Coronavirus, ater realising her own children were being signiicantly afected by the amount of discussion about the virus. “Speaking to friends of mine with kids, I realised that some children have been worried or anxious and parents did not always know what to say,” Ms Lim said. “So I created a book that would address what kids could do to stay safe without it becoming an overwhelming issue which they feel like they do not have control over. “I wanted to give them a sense of understanding and provide the tools for them to feel like they have some control during these uncertain times.” Ms Lim’s sister Priscilla Lim illustrated the book, which also has an accompanying video on YouTube. Director Mina Luna from Black Xolo Films and animator Karla Gonzalez Mauricio collaborated on the video. “What I enjoyed most about creating this was working together with a fantastic group of ladies to make this happen,” Ms Lim said. “We all came together with the skills we had to make something that can potentially help a lot of people.” Ms Lim said the book was available to download for free online, as they wanted to make it available to all families, including those on a low income. Seventy cases of coronavirus have been recorded in Wyndham, including 12 active cases, as of Tuesday. he Department of Human Services (DHHS) reported 60 new cases of the virus on Tuesday, taking the state total to 2159. Within Victoria, 13 new cases are linked to outbreaks, 20 new cases have been identiied through routine testing and 31 cases are under investigation. On Monday, three new COVID-19 cases were linked to a Truganina family outbreak, taking that total to ive. Yesterday, DHHS reported two staf at the Al-Taqwa College in Truganina have tested positive. New cases early this week have been linked to six schools across Melbourne, including Al-Taqwa College, Queen of Peace Parish Primary School in Altona Meadows, Maribyrnong College and Footscray High School. A DHHS statement said all of the schools would undergo a deep clean and close contacts of afected students and staf would be required to quarantine themselves. In addition, a new COVID-19 case has been linked to a virus outbreak at the Coles Chilled Distribution Centre in Laverton, taking the total number of cases at that site to four. Yesterday was the 14th consecutive day of double-digit case growth in Victoria, with a continuing and concerning number of new cases associated with transmission in households and families. Land secured for future school By Alesha Capone he state government has secured land for a future secondary school in Wyndham Vale. Werribee MP Tim Pallas announced the news on Friday. Mr Pallas said the government had obtained an 8.4 hectare site at 270 Black Forest Road, within the Harpley estate for the future school. he land has been secured as part of a Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) work-in-kind agreement with a local developer. he GAIC is a levy paid by developers for future essential infrastructure and services in areas they are building in – in this case, instead

secured “for considerably cheaper than the value determined by the valuer-general”. “his is a landmark deal that will make sure developers making a windfall out of building new communities give back to the families who will call this neighbourhood home,” Mr Pallas said. Once complete, the Harpley estate will become home for 12,000 people. “his will be a great place to live and raise a family, and with a site now secured for a secondary school the work is being done to ensure important community infrastructure keeps pace with growth,” Mr Pallas said. he Wyndham Vale deal marks the eighth

successful GAIC work-in-kind agreement established in Victoria. he eight GAIC work-in-kind agreements signed of by the Victorian Planning Authority are valued at a combined $64 million. According to Wyndham council, the municipality will need six new primary schools and two new secondary schools by 2023, due to the growing number of children and teenagers living in the area. he council’s long-running schools4wyndham campaign is urging the state government to allocate land for a new primary school in Williams Landing and an additional P-9 school in Point Cook.

Gardens of goodwill blooming Flowerbeds at Werribee Mansion have been transformed into a vegetable patch, to help Wyndham families struggling during the COVID-10 pandemic. In recent weeks, more than 480 kilograms of vegetables have been harvested from the mansion’s historic parterre gardens – which are famous among gardeners around the world – and sent to organisations providing food to Wyndham families in need. Silverbeet grown in the gardens has been sent to a local Sikh Temple, which produces 1000 free meals a week for anyone in need, and

Encore Events’ community kitchen, which is preparing 600 meals a week. Werribee Park area chief ranger James Brincat said the silverbeet initiative began as a plan to put a green crop into the parterre to rest the soil from the nutrient-thirsty lowering crops it usually hosts. Mr Brincat said the initiative stemmed from the Working Beyond the Boundaries partnership between Parks Victoria and refugee settlement agency AMES Australia. He said the program had become so successful that it would become a regular winter project.

he parterre was planted by Parks Victoria horticulture team Adam Smith, Hsar hein Ju and Adam Xerri. Encore Events chef Luciano Fuentes said that while the events centre was closed during the COVID-19 crisis, its team was continuing to support the local community. “Our dedicated team are here to assist and in a time where the events industry has been hit hard, our kitchen is still focused on the community, creating 600 meals a week for local families and individuals in need during a pilot program,” Mr Fuentes said.

Wyndham council has urged residents to have their say on a new park which is being planned for Tarneit. Designs for Caraleena Drive Park include a playground, a social area with seating, walking paths and open space with trees and plants. Wyndham’s family friendly city portfolio holder, Cr Mia Shaw, said the park would become a valuable addition to Tarneit. “Local parks play a vital role in the life of a community – they provide space for exercising, playing, socialising with friends and family or relaxing and unwinding,” Cr Shaw said. “his park will give residents a place to take their kids for some fun on the playground, a great spot to go for a walk and enjoy some greenery, and a big open space to kick a footy or have a picnic.” he council is encouraging residents to shape the way Caraleena Drive Park will look by participating in a short survey on he Loop website, which will be open until Friday, July 10. he survey gives residents the opportunity to view and comment on the designs for the park and detail how they would like to use the park, and what playground equipment they would like to see installed. his feedback will be used to inform the inal detailed design of Caraleena Drive Park, with construction expected to commence by mid-next year. WRFL cancels season By Ewen McRae here will be no senior football played in the Western Region Football League this season, with the board putting a line through 2020 last week. he board announced that all seniors, reserves and under 18.5 men’s and women’s competitions would not go ahead this year, with too many clubs expressing reservations about returning to play. he league said that concerns had been growing from clubs in recent weeks, with a signiicant majority of senior clubs conceding that their longer-term viability would be best served by not competing in a senior premiership season. Other primary concerns raised by senior clubs included the health and safety of members and patrons and the inability to efectively manage crowds to comply with current social distancing rules and crowd restrictions at open public reserves. he league still plans to run a junior football season, as well as a netball season, kicking of on July 26. League chief executive Matthew Duck said ensuring all clubs survived the current pandemic and were in good shape for 2021 and beyond was their top priority. “he WRFL has maintained a view throughout this process that 34 clubs went into 2020, and we need to do whatever we can to ensure 34 clubs come out,” Duck said. “Clubs expressed concerns about their inancials, older volunteers, crowd restrictions and an overall inability to manage crowds at open public spaces.” he league said it was open to exploring club interest in a shortened, more informal opt-in/opt-out ofering should circumstances allow later this year.

Civic centre reopens to customers Customer service has reopened at Wyndham council’s Civic Centre in Werribee. he centre reopened to residents seeking assistance last week, in line with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. Mayor Josh Gilligan said the services available were limited to general inquiries and payments, between the hours of 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday. “Our phone and webchat services will still operate seven days a week and we advise you to continue to use this service if you need to speak to a speciic department, for example town planning,” Cr Gilligan said. He said visitors to the civic centre would be greeted by a concierge, who will take everyone’s details and ensure social distancing and good hygiene practices are followed. “We ask residents to remain patient if they are asked to queue outside the building because we are limiting numbers to 20 people in the foyer at any one time due to social distancing measures,” Cr Gilligan said. A 19-year-old Truganina man has been charged with obtaining property by deception, two counts of possessing a drug of dependence and committing an indictable offence while on bail. he popular Wyndham Repair Café in Werribee is looking for a new premises. he café, based at the Envision headquarters on Loop Road, provides the public with a free service to ix broken or non-working objects. Café supervisor Joe Ferlazzo said the café would have to close by July 8, because Envision, a not-for-proit organisation which supports jobseekers, was closing its Werribee operations. While the repair café would be temporarily shut down, Mr Ferlazzo was looking for another Wyndham location to restart. He said he was also working with Wyndham council to ind a new location. “It’s getting there, council have been really good to date and have been very supportive,” he said.

Mr Ferlazzo said the COVID-19 pandemic made things more diicult than usual, but he hoped to reopen the repair café in about two months. He also hoped to continue a recycling program which currently operates from the Loop Road premises, ofering about 15 recyclings bins for items including bras, X-rays, solar lights, cork, watches, glasses, bread-tags and mobile phones. Police are hoping to identify two men after liquor valued at more than $900 was stolen from a Point Cook liquor store on June 8. Police have been told the men attended the Murnong Street shop about 8.30pm and took 15 bottles of Scotch whisky and three bottles of Tennessee whisky without making any attempt to pay. Pipeline to water saving GOTAFE student Ben Finlayson has helped his employer to save thousands of litres of water on its production line. Mr Finlayson is completing a certiicate IV in food science and technology at GOTAFE, which has campuses in Shepparton, Benalla, Wangaratta, Seymour, Wallan and Werribee. He has been studying at GOTAFE since April last year and recently inished a project based on reducing water usage at his work site by working out how to optimise a Clean in Place (CIP) reduction – a method of cleaning the interior surfaces of pipes and other equipment without disassembling them – at the plant. Mr Finlayson works at Sungold Milk, the fresh milk brand of Australia’s oldest dairy company, Warrnambool Cheese & Butter.

For his assignment, Mr Finlayson assessed Sungold’s CIP process and identiied that its average water usage on a Sunday was 90,000 litres. He aimed to reduce this by half and worked with the company’s quality administrator to ensure that the reduction of CIP didn’t afect the quality of the product. Ater proposed changes to the CIP were introduced, Sungold’s Sunday water usage decreased from 108,000 litres to 48,000 litres for the day. Mr Finlaysn said that his employers had responded with a “very positive” reaction. “My supervisor has provided a lot of support and feedback to myself and others lending a hand,” he said.

Four years jail for manslaughter By Luke Voogt A Tarneit teen who struck and killed a man with his car at Eastern Beach last October will spend four years in a youth detention centre. Supreme Court judge Paul Coghlan sentenced Setefano Pahul Tupou, 19, last week ater he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in May over the death of Colac’s Timothy Williams. Mr Williams’ death occurred ater his sister took him to central Geelong mental health facility the Swanston Centre on October 27, 2019, Justice Coghlan said during sentencing.

About 8pm on October 28 the centre phoned to tell her Mr Williams had not returned ater going out at 6.20pm. She iled a missing person’s report at Geelong Police Station. Tupou, then 18, and his girlfriend were in his car at Eastern Beach to celebrate her high school graduation, when Mr Williams punched a sign about 15 metres away. When they laughed Mr Williams yelled at them and approached them. “hen you told him to f**k of,” Justice Coghlan said to Tupou. Mr Williams then punched the car window

and kicked the drivers’ side door, and Tupou reversed before changing gear to drive at him. he front of the car struck Mr Williams, who fell backwards, sustaining a wound to the rear of his head. Tupou attempted to provide assistance while his girlfriend phoned triple-0. Paramedics took Mr Williams to Geelong hospital. He was later taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he died on October 30. In a police interview, Tupou admitted he intended to hit Mr Williams but said he meant only to “nudge” him. During the interview Tupou described

his fear and feeling “protective” of his then girlfriend, who was screaming during the confrontation. “Your response was instantaneous; however, the consequences were tragic,” Justice Coghlan said. He found Tupou, despite using the car as a “weapon”, had not meant to cause “serious injury”. Justice Coghlan said Tupou had no prior convictions and noted his “good character”, guilty plea, attempts to give assistance and co-operation with authorities.

By Alesha Capone Tensions boiled over at Wyndham council’s last public meeting, with a long-serving councillor threatening to walk out due to the “disgraceful” behaviour on display. Cr Heather Marcus said she would “tell everybody how and what I’ve put up with over this last four years” if she walked out. he meeting, held last Tuesday, comes just weeks ater western metropolitan MP Bernie Finn called for the council to be sacked and administrators appointed. Mr Finn made the call last month, ater Cr Kim McAliney resigned ahead of the Victorian municipal elections to be held in October. he council last week voted not to replace Ms McAliney before the election. Also at the meeting, Cr Intaj Khan put forward two motions, one in relation to a potential fee waiver on rates, which did not get voted in. His other motion related to the council receiving a report on the implementation of its CCTV policy, which the majority of councillors voted in favour of. During discussion of the fee waiver, Cr Peter Maynard said: “I just think this motion is another Kath and Kim, look at me, look at me.” At other times during the meeting, Cr Maynard interjected: “It must be close to an election,” and “here must be an election going.” Cr Henry Barlow also interjected: “Vote for Intaj in October.” Cr Heather Marcus said she was “absolutely

disgusted” by the behaviour. “I’ve been on this council for 15 years and the behaviour around this council chamber is disgraceful,” she said. “I could walk out of this council tonight, and if I walk tonight, I will tell everybody how and what I’ve put up with over this last four years.” In response, mayor Josh Gilligan asked the councillors who were interjecting to “please refrain from doing that”. Murderer sentenced to 33 years By Alesha Capone A man who bashed another male to death in the backyard of a Wyndham Vale transition house has been sentenced to 33 years imprisonment for murder. Daniel Hounslow, 42, pleaded guilty to the murder of Micah Kawalek in the Supreme Court on June 9, and was sentenced on June 18. he court heard that on March 24 last year, Hounslow beat Mr Kawalek to death while they were both living at a property in Mount Eagle Way, Wyndham Vale, which

was being used a short-term transition house for recently-released prisoners and other men requiring accommodation. Mr Kawalek, 49, moved into the house due to his alcohol use and a battle with mental health issues. he court heard that while beating Mr Kawalek to death, Hounslow was under the delusion that Mr Kawalek was his older brother. Justice Andrew Tinney said Hounslow believed his brother had drugged and raped him as a child. Justice Tinney said that during the attack,

Hounslow punched and kicked Mr Kawalek about 40 times over the course of more than two hours. He also stomped on Mr Kawalek’s head. he court heard that the next day, Hounslow contacted triple-0 to report the murder. Police later located Mr Kawalek’s body on the Wyndham Vale property. Hounslow told police he and Mr Kawalek had been drinking alcohol together in the days leading up to the murder. A urine sample taken on March 25 while Hounslow was in custody, was found to

contain methylamphetamine, amphetamine and ethanol. Justice Tinney said Hounslow had previously been imprisoned for eight charges of rape, aggravated burglary, making a threat to kill, unlawful assault, being drunk in a public place and possession of a controlled weapon. He described Hounslow’s bashing of Mr Kalawek as “scarcely believable” in its “ferocity and duration”. Justice Tinney sentenced Hounslow to 33 years in prison, with a non-parole period of 26 years.

Fee relief for clubs Wyndham council will waive fees for outdoor sporting clubs for the 2020 winter season to help support local sports during the COVID-19 pandemic. Wyndham’s sports development portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard, announced the news at last week’s council meeting. Cr Maynard said the council has allocated about $20 million to sports and recreation as part of its 2020-21 budget. “To assist sporting clubs doing it tough during COVID-19, council is also committing to provide inancial support to these important community organisations by not charging fees for outdoor sporting clubs for the 2020 winter season,” he said. Cr Maynard said the council would also ofset some of the additional costs sporting clubs operating out of AquaPulse and Eagle Stadium might incur, relating to hiring extra lanes and courts needed to meet government

pandemic regulations. He said the council would work with sports groups to provide advice and support. “While we will hopefully see community club sports restrictions ease from mid-July … we will continue to keep across the situation and its impact on clubs in future seasons,” he said. “Sporting clubs and organisations in this city have many volunteers who are also residents, and who are also racking their brains to ind new and innovative ways to ensure the viability and long-term sustainability of their clubs.” Alesha Capone

Heroes behind the masks hey’re the heroes behind the face masks – the medical staf who work on the frontline of the ight against coronavirus. Star Weekly speaks to three employees from Mercy Health and Werribee Mercy Hospital, as the state’s ight against COVID-19 ramps up again. Panga Manoharan

Panga Manoharan says that members of his team at Mercy Health have worked many extra hours since the pandemic hit. Mr Manoharan is the health organisation’s supply chain manager, and works alongside four other colleagues in procurement and contracts, plus ive purchasing oicers. Mr Manoharan said the team managed contracts and organised most of the purchasing for Mercy Health’s hospitals, palliative care services, 35 residential aged care homes and home and community care services. He said that when the pandemic started, the team immediately focused on trying to source appropriate levels of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as face masks, for medical staf. “In those early few weeks, though, it was really tough and stressful trying to ind ways to procure some of the items we needed,” he said. “We relied heavily on our relationships with suppliers, we had to enter into new negotiations and, to be honest, there were deinitely some sleepless nights. “hings have deinitely settled down in the last couple of months, and stocks have returned to reasonably normal levels as production of these items around the world ramped up.” Mr Manoharan said everyone on his team had undertaken roles outside their normal duties during the pandemic. “Every member of our team has been a courier during this period, moving PPE between our hospitals, aged care homes and community settings, and we’ve all worked many extra hours,” he said. “It’s been amazing watching our team work above and beyond their regular duties with no fanfare and little understanding of the huge

Paula Guerin says she feels “very proud” to work within the Werribee Mercy Hospital’s Emergency Department. Ms Guerin is an associate nurse unit manager (ANUM) in the department. She said that when the pandemic began, the department made several changes, including introducing a concierge pre-assessment screening nurse at its entrance. A separate Fever Respiratory ED (FRED) unit was also created inside the existing Emergency Department, with provisions to extend into unused, older operating theatres if required. “Our community has been incredible, and for that we thank you,” Ms Guerin said. “We are a 15-bed ED with three resuscitation beds and a limited short stay unit. “We see up to 150 presentations a day but your response has meant we haven’t been overwhelmed. “But this isn’t over yet and there is still a lot to do.” Ms Guerin said that in March, as the coronavirus diagnoses began to increase in Australia and media coverage highlighted what was occurring overseas, Werribee Mercy’s ED and ward staf – along with the entire community – entered “a period of unknown, confusion, anxiety and fear”. But she said the way the Emergency Department “has adjusted and come together is a testament to the staf whom we frequently refer to as our ED family”. “Many staf have done extra shits and hours, with some cancelling annual leave in support of their colleagues and the community,” she said. Ms Guerin said the ED team had “experienced incredible love and support from our community” during the pandemic, with individuals, businesses, hospital staf members and their families donating many items including meals, cofee, scrub caps and safety glasses. “Our work has at times been overwhelming but we’ve felt so lited by the care of everyone in our community,” she said.

His role includes clinical tasks, such as testing people for COVID-19, assessing people who come into the hospital with respiratory symptoms and helping other physicians. Dr Turner also sits on a number of committees and an Incident Command Team.

He said that before the pandemic, he did a lot of bedside work, but he has now become involved in several administrative duties, surrounding the policies and protocols in place at Mercy Health. Dr Turner said the coronavirus pandemic was not the irst time he had faced dangerous illnesses, as he has previously worked in situations involving measles and TB. He said that part of his role at Mercy Health included reassuring other staf members they were doing their best to stay safe, by following stringent procedures and not putting themselves or others as risk. “hey can go home to their families and hopefully not be anxious,” Dr Turner said, “Although that is easier said than done, I have two little boys myself, and I think, ‘I don’t want to be away from them for too long or put them at risk’.” Dr Turner said he would also like to thank members of the public who have been obeying the government’s pandemic guidelines. “A huge amount of responsibility and thanks has to go to the community for the sacriices they have made,” he said. However, Dr Turner said he and his colleagues wanted to encourage people to attend hospital, if they genuinely needed to, during the pandemic. “A lot of us are concerned that people are thinking they want to do the right thing and saying, ‘I’ll stay at home, I won’t bother the health system’,” he said. “But I want to reassure the community the hospital is safe – we have capacity, we’re available to help people.”

How to survive hotel quarantine Star Weekly reporter Esther Lauaki recently returned from New Zealand and is under strict quarantine for 14 days at Melbourne’s Crown Metropol hotel. his is her story. “Lucky!” – so I’ve been told when I tell people that I’m under quarantine at this ive-star hotel. Unfortunately, it’s not the glamorous existence we all think it is. his week marks my sixth in complete isolation since March and my third round of 14 day quarantine periods. My irst was a voluntary home quarantine upon arrival from a trip overseas when Victoria was irst gripped by COVID-19 and all returned travellers were put into mandatory isolation to slow the spread of the virus. I lew to New Zealand in May for a family emergency, while the country was still in stage three lockdown, and was quarantined at he Grand Mercure hotel in Auckland. And now, here we are. Victoria’s chief health oicer Brett Sutton estimates about 200 overseas travellers arrive at Melbourne Airport each day, with the number getting closer to 1,000 on some days. I returned on a full light from Auckland on June 17. Ater a border security brieing, we were handed masks before walking a gauntlet of government agency checkpoints: fever checks, documents, customs, luggage and a light snack for the bus ride to a government managed hotel. Most travellers were alone so we were processed in single ile at reception before a security guard escorted us to the lit, then to our rooms down a silent corridor. “See you in 14 days,” he said to me as I shut the door. he rules are straight forward. 14 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 1 July, 2020

You can not leave your room; three basic meals are delivered to your door each day and a nurse calls your room daily to check for developing symptoms. On day three and day 11, everyone must have a compulsory COVID test which involves a very uncomfortable swab of your throat and nostrils. here is no swanning around in the hotel spa, gym facilities, no meals at Crown’s up-market bistros and no visitors. he 2020 pandemic has made me quite the survivalist. While I appreciated the breakfasts of rice bubbles, milk, yoghurt, piece of fruit and a fridge cold pastry, I was glad to top up on pantry staples of two minute cup noodles, tuna snack packs and some extras via an online Coles delivery. UberEats and food deliveries are also allowed but can get pricey if you over indulge. Keeping occupied with work, music, movies, video calls with friends and a token yoga session have been my saving graces while isolated. Writing a gratitude diary was another helpful strategy suggested to me by the mental health nurse who is also on call for those feeling overwhelmed. As bleak and unsettling as some days have been over the past few months, gratitude is something I’ve clung to in order to get through. Lucky isn’t the irst word I would have used to describe my circumstance – but in many ways I am.

Renault Kadjar is a midsize SUV that is a co-design between French Renault and Japanese Nissan. hese companies have been working together successfully for many years. Like many in this class it has a leaning towards being a comfortable people mover rather than to harsh of-road work. hat’s exactly what buyers want, so it’s a smart design. However, if you want to do some light to moderate of-road driving the Kadjar is protected by front and rear skid plates. Kadjar is ofered in Life, Zen and Intens variants. Our test car was the Kadjar Intens.

Styling Styling is attractive, but somehow we had expected a bit more French lair to make it stand out from its many, mainly Asian, competitors. At the front, Kadjar carries over the C-shape light signature from the Renault range. hough it shares much of its bodywork with the Nissan Qashqai the front is clearly identiiable as a Renault thanks to a standout version of the company’s diamond in the centre of the grille.
