Victoria recorded 75 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, with the virus afecting Footscray High School’s Kinnear campus, Maribyrnong College and Queen of Peace Parish Primary in Altona. he total number of coronavirus cases in Victoria has now passed 2100, with 20 deaths to date. Maribyrnong has had 33 conirmed cases, including 10 active cases. Hobsons Bay has had 23 conirmed cases, with two still active. Of the 75 new cases announced on Monday, a record number of 74 were acquired locally. Victoria’s Chief Health Oicer Brett Sutton warned Victorians to brace for yet more bad news over coming days, hinting that local lockdowns may still be on the cards. “I think it will get worse before it gets better,” he said. “So there is a balancing act in terms of making the call on a lockdown.” Parents of Queen of Peace Parish Primary School in Altona Meadows posted on social media communication they had received relating to a student who tested positive for COVID-19. “he Department of Health and Human Services (DHSS) has conirmed that a year 6 Queen of Peace student who last attended school on the 18th of June has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19),” it said. “Following advice from DHSS and Catholic Education Melbourne (ECM), Queen of Peace Parish Primary School is currently closed. “his closure will allow time for the school and DHHS to undertake a full risk assessment and appropriate cleaning of the school site to occur on the recommendation of DHHS. “Close contacts of the students will be notiied by DHHS and supported to ensure they understand what actions to take. “Students are advised to remain at home while contact tracing occurs. hey must limit movements to home-based activities and not attend public places.” A child attending Gowrie Clare Court childcare and kindergarten in Yarraville has also tested positive. he child was last in the service on Friday, June 26. Meanwhile thousands of Maidstone residents have been COVID-19 tested in a blitz on the suburb ater it was identiied as one of Melbourne’s 10 coronavirus hotspots. A surge in conirmed COVID-19 cases last week involved a number of Maribyrnong cases,

including a family of ive and three staf at a Maidstone dental clinic. Two staf members from Hampstead Dental were conirmed to have contracted the virus, joining a previous case notiied to the health department on Saturday. No patients have been identiied as close contacts so far. Five members of one family household in the

As another financial year comes to an end, it has been pleasing to reflect on a number of key capital works projects completed across Maribyrnong. The redevelopment of Scovell Reserve Pavilion in Maidstone is now complete. The works included bringing together 3 separate sports pavilions into one single facility at the north of the reserve, along with minor landscaping and pathway works. At the end of 2019, construction was complete on the Church Street Children’s Centre in West Footscray. This much awaited centre started offering integrated long day childcare and sessional 3 and 4 year old kindergarten at the beginning of 2020.

This exciting new facility provides contemporary indoor and outdoor play spaces which allow the educational team to deliver high quality programs to develop each child’s physical, social, intellectual and emotional skills. Last month, as part of the Hansen Reserve Masterplan we opened a new junior bike skills track. During consultation we received a positive response from the community for the Masterplan, and we are pleased to have delivered some of these new facilities. Other works include: upgrades to Kindersmith Pavilion in Braybrook; paint and flooring work at Brenbeal Children’s Centre in Footscray; ceiling and lighting upgrades at Seddon Cricket Club; and reconstruction works at Yarraville Gardens.

Council commits to third COVID-19 support plan Hobsons Bay council has released its annual drat budget which proposes a 2 per cent rates rise, more than 150 per cent of which will be returned via a third community support package of $3 million. Almost $2 million has been allocated to business and economic recovery in 2020-21, including rebates for food registration ($595,000), extending the waiver of paid parking in Williamstown until the year’s end ($520,000), a business precinct support campaign ($250,000), rent relief in council

properties ($210,000) and town planning rebates ($177,000). he budget is based on an operational surplus of $25.3 million, which does not include a record $67.8 million in capital works. Works include $15.6 million for roads and drains, $1.5 million for footpaths and cycle ways, $16.3 million for recreation and open space, and $29.958 million on buildings, such as sporting and recreational facilities, civic and community facilities. he council has reviewed its inancial

hardship policy to ofer support to residents and businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Cr Peter Hemphill said a lot of thought had gone in to the 2 per cent rate rise. “It is tempting to go to a zero per cent rate rise, and while some residents may have lost jobs or some businesses might ind it particularly diicult at the moment … they have the opportunity to seek relief through our hardship policy,” he said. “But if we went to a zero per cent rate rise,

the vast majority of residents that can pay and businesses that would be able to pay would be let of the hook.” Cr Jonathon Marsden said “this budget is a COVID budget”. “Part of this budget is the third community support package,” he said. “It aims to provide tangible, long-lasting and efective support for residents and businesses hit the hardest by the pandemic.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Chemical storage anger By Goya Dmytryshchak Toxic chemicals are being stored without a permit just 420 metres from Brooklyn homes, causing an outcry from surrounding residents. A retrospective planning permit application has been lodged by FBT Transwest with Brimbank council for storage of dangerous goods at 6/600 Geelong Road, Brooklyn. Brooklyn and surrounding residents, along with Hobsons Bay council, say the operation should be immediately shut down as it placed people “at great risk”. Hobsons Bay deputy mayor Sandra Wilson told last week’s council meeting that a formal objection would be lodged against the application. “We’ve had the storage of dangerous and hazardous chemicals within the proximity of

a local community that undergoes so much impost from that Brooklyn industrial site,” she said. “For this to happen on our watch and indeed the watch of Brimbank council is really disappointing.” he site is also about 120 metres from the Federation Trail bike and walking path and about 750 metres from Annunciation Primary School. Brooklyn Residents Action Group (BRAG) president Bert Boere said applying for a permit now was like closing the barn door ater the horse had bolted. “From [the site] to the nearest houses on the other side of Geelong is only a matter of a few hundred metres,” he said “If it is combustible or if there is a situation,

it’s just going to bring it over the residential area and it’s too close. It’s just too close.” Altona North’s Geof Mitchelmore, a former industrial chemist and also a member of BRAG, said Brimbank council had known of the operation since at least mid last year when the application was lodged. “It is now June and it is still operating and they haven’t got a planning permit,” he said. “We just don’t understand how they can be allowed to operate if they haven’t got a planning permit – it’s as simple as that.” Brimbank’s city development director Kelvin Walsh said it was the council’s understanding that the amount of chemicals being stored on the site at present were “well below the amounts for which the application seeks approval”. he applicant was contacted for comment.

Hobsons Bay council has rejected a petition calling for the reinstatement of a weekly garbage collection, estimating the cost to ratepayers would be $1.56 million. In February, the council cut garbage collections from weekly to fortnightly under a new four-bin recycling system. he petition, signed by 1120 people stated: “We believe the removal of the weekly general rubbish waste collection is both inadequate and unsatisfactory, and should not have been done without widespread community consultation and engagement.” Last week’s council meeting heard that about 3200 out of 39,000 households in Hobsons Bay had opted for a larger 240-litre bin. Of these 3233 households, 1787 had opted for an interim free upsize from a 120-litre bin, 754 opted for a paid upsize and 692 already had a bigger bin prior to February. he cost of reinstating a weekly collection would be $40 per household, the council meeting heard. Councillor Angela Altair said the council had some sympathy for the petitioners but felt that various actions taken, including increasing the availability of the larger bin and having an interim rubbish drop-of service, had alleviated some of the problem for people. She said it would be “grossly unfair” to reinstate a weekly collection because the majority didn’t want it. “While, obviously, a substantial number of people who signed the petition are wishing that we could reintroduce the weekly [collection], there’s a lot more people out there … who are more than supportive of this groundbreaking scheme,” Cr Altair said. Seawall under threat

Council maps out recovery

By Goya Dmytryshchak One of Williamstown’s most iconic pieces of convict history, the Point Gellibrand Seawall that Ned Kelly worked on, is deteriorating and disappearing. Maritime historian Geof Dougall said the community was calling for the historic seawall to be preserved for future generations. he Point Gellibrand Seawall was built from the 1850s to 1870s by convict labour from hulks moored ofshore, he said. “We believe, and we can virtually say with 100 per cent surety, that Ned Kelly did work on it as a labourer,” Mr Dougall said. “he wall protected one of the colony’s irst roads, named aptly Battery Road, which ran between the two main colonial batteries set up to protect us from invasion, and the southerly gales which lash the beachfront. “he bluestone was quarried from the convict quarry close by and had distinctive tally marks chiseled into a single bluestone when a certain quota was met.” Cross marks on the bluestone are still visible to this day. “he road and wall were where Governor Price met his demise at the hands of convicts,” Mr Dougall said. “he convicts worked in leg irons, and were overseen by warders from the hulks.” he road has since been renamed Bracks Boulevard and most of the retaining wall is no longer visible due to sand and overgrowth from bushes. “Unfortunately, the remaining section is falling into disrepair,” Mr Dougall said. “In particular, a number of the large bluestone pitchers have been dislodged and fallen onto the sand, and almost vanishing under their weight. “Action is needed urgently to replace the pitchers and conserve the wall for future generations to enjoy.” A Parks Victoria spokesperson said an

Rate discounts, welfare checks and food and care packages for the area’s most vulnerable people will all continue as part of Maribyrnong council’s formal response to the COVID-19 crisis. he council’s COVID-19 ‘Relief and Recovery Action Plan’, released last week, sets out the ongoing arrangements for co-ordinating and managing the delivery of relief and recovery activities until “business as usual” recommences. he plan is overseen by a ‘Relief and Recovery Committee’ that draws together representatives from the council, Department of Health and Human Services, cohealth, Victoria University, Victoria Police and Red Cross. he council has also appointed two oicers as ‘Community Connectors’ for people who have been directly impacted by COVID-19. A report to last week’s council meeting noted the plan is guiding actions including outreach and family violence services as well as providing food and care packages to vulnerable residents. “he Relief and Recovery Plan will form the basis for the City of Maribyrnong’s long term social and economic recovery from the pandemic,” it states. “his includes continuing to work with state and federal governments to provide long term support for local residents and businesses.” he council is also delivering a relief package to local arts and culture organisations facing potential closures.

‘Too big’ for Spotswood Plans have been lodged with Hobsons Bay council for a 58-dwelling, four storey residential development, proposed as the irst stage of a new housing precinct dubbed Spotswood Yards. Vega One is proposing 47 apartments and 11 two-storey townhouses on a 4.7 hectare parcel of the land at 571-589 Melbourne Road. Eighty four car spaces are provided over two basement levels, and 13 on-street visitor spots on a new internal road, plus four car share spots. here would also be 78 basement bike spaces and 12 ground-level spots. Spotswood’s Karin Reid said she and other residents would object to the proposal as it was an overdevelopment of the site. “I don’t disapprove of development,” she said. “I’m opposed to the multi-level, high-density living. I think little Spotswood can’t handle it

– it’s too big a footprint for us. And the traic, with two primary schools nearby. As we know, Williamstown Road or Melbourne Road – it’s already busy as hell.” he site is the former Spotswood Railway Workshops complex, with the Ways and Workshops building the sole remaining building. VicTrack sold the land in 2018 as it was deemed surplus to transport needs. he developer’s master plan for the site divides the triangular block into ive precincts, with the current proposed development known as Precinct 1. Four bin system to stay – for now By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay’s ‘Recycling 2.0’ four-bin system will remain for at least a year following a review, despite a much higher than predicted contamination rate. In February, the council rolled out a four-bin system, comprising new food and garden waste and glass bins in addition to existing garbage and recycling bins. Last week’s council meeting heard that about 35 per cent of waste was being disposed of in the food organics and garden organics (FOGO) bins. A report to the council stated that garbage volumes had reduced by 2500 tonnes (37 per cent) over four months but a key area for improvement was the high comingled recycling contamination level. “Contamination has been much higher than predicted with comingled recyclables,” it states. Visual inspections of trucks from mid-February to mid-March found contamination levels of 35 to 50 per cent. “As a result, the majority of comingled recyclables collected in February, March and April, 2020, were rejected to landill,” the report stated. he combined comingled recycling and glass collection increased by 347 tonnes (15 per cent), although this volume would be less if adjusted for contamination. FOGO increased by 3571 tonnes (185 per cent). Household garbage collection averaged 86 litres per fortnight compared with the previous 69 litres per week in 2019.

Sustainable Communities director Penelope Winslade told the meeting that other councils had also found high levels of contamination. “It’s not a discrete problem to Hobsons Bay, and other councils that have introduced the four-bin system are inding, as they start to really do deep dives in their contamination, very high levels of contamination,” she said.

he report stated that COVID-19 had substantially impacted household waste volumes, with more people at home generating waste for their kerbside bins. “Council has responded to this challenge by ofering a weekly Saturday garbage drop-of for two months, and by rolling out a free 240 litre garbage bin upsizing program for eligible households,” it stated. “A wide a range of community views have been expressed about the program. “his includes a petition with over 1100 signatures calling for the reinstatement of weekly garbage collection, as well as more than triple the normal volume of compliments provided to council’s customer service on the program, and over 350 residents volunteering to champion the program in the community.” he review recommends further actions to address comingled contamination and to retain the current system for at least 12 months.

Green light for oval works By Goya Dmytryshchak Nearly $2.5 million has been allocated in this year’s Hobsons Bay council budget to reconstruct Williamstown Football Club’s home ground. Works at Downer Oval, aka Williamstown Cricket Ground, were originally slated for late 2023 but will instead start this October. As reported by Star Weekly in November, players had been injured and games were moved from Williamstown, prompting a petition signed by nearly 400 people calling on the council to bring planned works forward. Williamstown Football Club chief executive Jason Reddick said the works would enable Hobsons Bay’s premier sporting oval to cater for state league football games as well as community football users, without the safety concerns of surface issues that had restricted its use in the past. “We also see this as a positive step towards securing state and federal government support for our facility project, that will deliver additional changerooms, gymnasium and match-day facilities to cater for women’s football and multiple games at the venue featuring community teams,” he said. Mr Reddick said the club would use Bayside College for the 2020-21 summer season. “Our club has invested in excess of $130,000 over the past two years into Bayside College oval No. 2, to be able to accommodate our pre-season training requirements,” he said.

Funding push for ‘large’ build Maribyrnong council is pressuring the state and federal governments to help fund the design of a landmark new library, art gallery and performing arts centre lagged for the centre of Footscray. he council will allocate up to $5 million to proceed to the design stage of the ‘NeXT’ project, provided the funding is matched by other levels of government. Detailed design is estimated to cost up to $8.5 million. A four-month consultation period gauging the preferred scale of the project attracted feedback from more than 1200 people, with 60 per cent supporting the ‘large’ concept, expected to cost an estimated $128 million to build. A report to last week’s council meeting noted that the economic impact of COVID-19 could create an opportunity for the council to seek stimulus funding from the state or federal government, while eforts are also underway to ind potential philanthropic investors. “It is considered that the large concept would provide the opportunity to relocate council’s Youth Services Centre from Phoenix Youth Centre to the NeXT site,” the report stated. he large concept also provides a performance space with capacity for up to 730 patrons. he council plans to establish a “skills-based board” to help make “arms-length” decisions on the design. Jake always a hero to mum By Benjamin Millar When Jake Kucera’s mother Anna was unresponsive ater a sudden seizure at the top of the stairs in their Maribyrnong home, he knew what he had to do. Jake, 13, sprang into action, putting into practice the skills he had picked up during a school irst aid course. He called triple-0 and carefully followed all of the operator’s instructions until paramedics arrived. Jake’s quick thinking and calmness under pressure was recognised last week at the

Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) annual Junior Triple Zero Hero Awards. he young heroes were nominated by the ESTA operators who took their call. Jake’s mother Anna Ukrainetz said she was very proud of the way her son handled the incident, which occurred last August. “He had just turned 13 just over a week before then, he was home with his three younger siblings,” she said. “I think they were pretty distressed but he did a great job, stayed really calm and kept me

from falling down the stairs – he really saved my life.” Ms Ukrainetz said she had never discussed with Jake what to do in such a situation, but he drew on what he picked up at his school during a irst aid course. “He is a very mature and sensible boy,” she said. “He really took control and did a great job under very stressful circumstances.” ESTA chief executive Marty Smyth said teaching children when and how to call triple-0, as well as knowing their home address, can save lives.

Exploring virus anxiety Dealing with anxiety from COVID-19 and the lockdown will be explored in a series of workshops hosted by Joseph’s Corner based at Laverton. Senior counsellor Heather Bunting said the unpredictability of COVID-19 had resulted in many people experiencing anxiety. “I think what’s caused, and is causing, a lot of anxiety is the fact that the pandemic and its outcome are unknown and unknowable,” she said. “Most of us like predictability – we want to know that our world is going to be the same next month as it is this month, or next week as it is this week. “But at the moment, and for the last three months, nobody has known that and nobody knows when it’s going to inish.” Ms Bunting said job losses had also been

Speeding drivers go unchecked By Goya Dmytryshchak Speeding vehicles in Maddox Road will be assessed once COVID-19 restrictions are further eased, following multiple reports of residents’ parked cars being damaged. Andie, who wanted her last name withheld, said her car was recently damaged while parked outside her home in the major thoroughfare between Altona and Newport. While the council is putting speed cushions in part of Maddox Road, between Woods Street and Railway Avenue, Andie is calling for them

to be installed the full length of the road to deter speeding drivers. “hey all still speed from the top of Mason Street, all the way down doing 60, 70, 80 kilometres, and I’ve told council I’ve got security cameras that capture footage of all of these speeding vehicles,” Andie said. Hobsons Bay’s infrastructure and city services director Sanjay Manivasagasivam said further traic surveys would be conducted following a request regarding a speeding issue on Maddox Road to the north of Woods Street. “To ensure any proposed treatment aligns with regular traic conditions, the area will

be evaluated once COVID-19 restrictions are further eased, allowing oicers to undertake the appropriate traic surveys,” he said. “Any data collected at this point of time would be considered invalid and not an accurate relection of traic issues. “In the meantime, as an interim mitigation measure, variable message sign boards will be installed along this section of Maddox Road. “he VMS boards will display the speed of approaching vehicles and will alert them should they be driving beyond the posted speed limit.”

Hospital stalwart retires Williamstown Hospital’s longest-serving employee, Toni Powell, was last week farewelled with a “face guard of honour” to mark her retirement. In half a century, Mrs Powell has worked virtually everywhere inside the hospital, including X-ray, pathology, medical records, stores, inance and switchboard, and has spent the past 20 years admitting patients. “I’ve really enjoyed the last 20 years in admissions because that’s my forte – talking,” she said. “he last few years in theatre reception were the best, I think. “When patients would come in, in the morning, if there were two or three of them together, I’d say to them, ‘Oh, who’s the lucky person today?’ “hey would say, ‘Why am I lucky?’ and I’d say, ‘Because you’re here at Williamstown’.” Mrs Powell started at Williamstown a few months before the West Gate Bridge collapsed,

and was at work when it happened. Her husband (then boyfriend) Rob, a painter, was working two blocks from the bridge when it fell. Mrs Powell has never worked a day anywhere else and even married Rob at the hospital in 1981 so her friends could attend even if they were “on duty”. She calls herself the “director of irst impressions” and jokes that her retirement is her “Wexit”. “Britain had their Brexit from the union, Meghan and Harry had their Megxit, and I call this my Wexit – my Western Health exit,” Mrs Powell said. “I’ll just settle into a relaxed way of life now. My hubby and I play golf and are walking each day or riding our bikes – it’s lovely.” Colleagues last Wednesday lined the hospital corridors wearing surgical masks, due to COVID-19, to say goodbye. An Altona North medical practice has become the irst GP respiratory clinic testing for coronavirus in Melbourne’s west, as part of the federal government’s roll-out of 100 such pop-up clinics Australia-wide. It comes as Health Minister Jenny Mikakos on Tuesday announced Victoria would have the widest testing criteria of COVID-19 in Australia. She said anyone experiencing fever and respiratory symptoms such as a cough or shortness of breath could ring ahead to a clinic to be tested. As of Tuesday, Victoria had 1291 cases, an increase of 10 since Monday. here have been 14 deaths statewide, while 40 people remain in hospital, including 15 in intensive care. here are 13 cases in Hobsons Bay and 10 in Maribyrnong.

Victoria’s state of emergency has been extended to May 11 to help continue to contain the spread of COVID-19. At Altona North, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal and partners run the Blackshaws Road pop-up clinic which was assembled from portables and tents over 10 days. Dr Haikerwal said the respiratory clinic enabled treatment of multiple patients with breathing conditions, including COVID-19, who were unable to be seen in a normal GP practice. Tests can be conducted without a change of personal protective gowns and masks, or shutting down and deep cleaning rooms between patients. he clinic had been the irst in Victoria to start swabbing people for coronavirus in the carpark until it ran out of gear. “here were no masks and then there were no gowns and then there were no swabs, so we had to do something diferent,” Dr Haikerwal said. “What we are doing now is … 50 or 60 tests

with only one or two sets of gowns, one set of masks, and all you’re changing is your gloves.” Dr Haikerwal said more coronavirus cases were expected to be detected as testing restrictions were relaxed. “here’s more people now who are eligible for the test so there’s more coming forward to be

tested,” he said. “When this whole thing started, the joke was Indonesia is the safest place in the world to be because they weren’t reporting any cases, but they weren’t testing anybody. “And of course, Bali was one of the earliest places that shut down ater China.

How to survive hotel quarantine Star Weekly reporter Esther Lauaki recently returned from New Zealand and is under strict quarantine for 14 days at Melbourne’s Crown Metropol hotel. his is her story. “Lucky!” – so I’ve been told when I tell people that I’m under quarantine at this ive-star hotel. Unfortunately, it’s not the glamorous existence we all think it is. his week marks my sixth in complete isolation since March and my third round of 14 day quarantine periods. My irst was a voluntary home quarantine upon arrival from a trip overseas when Victoria was irst gripped by COVID-19 and all returned travellers were put into mandatory isolation to slow the spread of the virus. I lew to New Zealand in May for a family emergency, while the country was still in stage three lockdown, and was quarantined at he Grand Mercure hotel in Auckland. And now, here we are. Victoria’s chief health oicer Brett Sutton estimates about 200 overseas travellers arrive at Melbourne Airport each day, with the number getting closer to 1,000 on some days. I returned on a full light from Auckland on June 17. Ater a border security brieing, we were handed masks before walking a gauntlet of government agency checkpoints: fever checks, documents, customs, luggage and a light snack for the bus ride to a government managed hotel. Most travellers were alone so we were processed in single ile at reception before a security guard escorted us to the lit, then to our rooms down a silent corridor. “See you in 14 days,” he said to me as I shut the door. he rules are straight forward.

You can not leave your room; three basic meals are delivered to your door each day and a nurse calls your room daily to check for developing symptoms. On day three and day 11, everyone must have a compulsory COVID test which involves a very uncomfortable swab of your throat and nostrils. here is no swanning around in the hotel spa, gym facilities, no meals at Crown’s up-market bistros and no visitors. he 2020 pandemic has made me quite the survivalist. While I appreciated the breakfasts of rice bubbles, milk, yoghurt, piece of fruit and a fridge cold pastry, I was glad to top up on pantry staples of two minute cup noodles, tuna snack packs and some extras via an online Coles delivery. UberEats and food deliveries are also allowed but can get pricey if you over indulge. Keeping occupied with work, music, movies, video calls with friends and a token yoga session have been my saving graces while isolated. Writing a gratitude diary was another helpful strategy suggested to me by the mental health nurse who is also on call for those feeling overwhelmed. As bleak and unsettling as some days have been over the past few months, gratitude is something I’ve clung to in order to get through. Lucky isn’t the irst word I would have used to describe my circumstance – but in many ways I am.

New programs build connections for 16-20s Starting in August, Gateways Support Services is launching two new recreation groups to help youths transition into adult programs. The new Bridges program caters for people aged 16-20 years with higher support needs, working with families to offer activities of interest to the group. A second group, Connections, is geared towards more independent young people (aged 16-20) who will have input in choosing their favourite activities as the program grows. Andrew from Keilor East found that when he turned 18, he was keen to participate in supported recreation groups but his interests didn’t match typical adult programs. So when he and his family heard about the new programs, he was excited to get on board. “I found that when Andrew turned 18, all the activities he liked to do weren’t offered anymore as he was too old, but going for a meal and drink at the pub is not something he was interested in at that stage,” Andrew’s mum, Joanne says. “The Bridges program is perfect to ill the gap between youth and adult services.” Joanne says the program will help Andrew, who was previously an active youth group goer, to make a smoother transition into adulthood. “Bridges will help make the transition from youth to adult programs easier by providing activities that Andrew relates to and is actually

interested in,” she says. “Through the programs, I’m hoping for Andrew to be more social with his peers and to engage in activities in his community.” Gateways Support Services recreation co-ordinator, Mandy, says these new programs were developed following feedback from families about what would work best for their children. The groups are designed not only to meet the individual goals of participants’ NDIS plans, but to help the young people form strong friendships with their peers and the self-conidence to try new things. “Many parents expressed concern around this transitionary period between youth and adulthood, where their children may not be ready to enter the open age group and wish to be among other people their own age with similar interests,” Mandy says. “Bridges and Connections will meet these needs, with participants supported in building their independence skills while they are making friends and having a great time.” Contact Gateways Support Services to register your interest or ind out more about the Bridges and Connections groups. How to Make a Written Submission
