hree Point Cook siblings have turned their love of Harry Potter into a way to make new friends. Atticus, 11, Ashlea, 10, Aubrey, 5, let, and their parents recently moved from Singapore to Australia. heir mother, Leah, said that during their irst two months in Australia, the children began making a Harry Potter-inspired games arcade out of cardboard. hey also made a Harry Potter-themed photo booth, complete with a broomstick. he siblings had hoped to invite the neighbourhood children over for a Harry Potter garage arcade event, in order to make new friends, but the COVID-19 pandemic halted these plans. Instead, they started selling the wands they had been making for $10 each. he two older siblings paint the wands, while Aubrey is in charge of packaging and making sure orders match clients’ special requests. Leah does the marketing. Atticus, Ashlea and Aubrey have been dressing in Hogwarts robes and cycling around Point Cook to deliver the wands. “I like to see how all the kids are really excited to see us,” Atticus said. Mortgage stress soars By Alesha Capone Residents of three postcodes located in Melbourne’s west are among the areas facing the highest mortgage stress in the nation, according to a new report. Research and consulting irm Digital Finance Analytics (DFA) has released its mortgage stress data for May, which ranked the 3037 postcode (which includes Delahey, Hillside and Sydenham) as experiencing the second-highest amount of mortgage stress in Australia. he 3030 postcode (Werribee, Werribee South, Point Cook, Quandong and Derrimut) was ranked fourth on the list, with 3029
(Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina) placing ith. According to the report, between 6000 to 7000 households in each of these postcodes are experiencing mortgage stress. he 3350 postcode (Ballarat and surrounds) ranked as having the highest amount of mortgage stress in Australia, with more than 7000 households experiencing mortgage stress. DFA surveyed 52,000 households across the nation within a year, and used mortgage industry reports, company information and banking and economic analysis to calculate the igures. he report considers households to be in
severe mortgage stress if their gross income – such as salary, pensions, interest and dividends – is 10 per cent or more below what they spend on tax, mortgage repayments, other housing costs, food, childcare, and school fees every month. According to the report, about 1.4 million households across the nation were experiencing mortgage stress in May – equating to 37.5 per cent of all households in Australia. In contrast, the report stated 38 per cent of households experienced mortgage stress during April. he report stated that between April and May, some households found relief
through the federal government’s JobKeeper payments, returning to work post-pandemic or reinancing to a lower mortgage repayment rate. Last month, Uniting Vic.Tas emergency relief lead Cathryn Ryan told Star Weekly that increasing numbers of people who had lost their jobs due to COVID-19 were seeking emergency assistance. Ms Ryan said this included families and couples where one adult was still employed, allowing them to cover mortgage payments, but that the other partner had lost their job, meaning there was no money let for essentials such as food.

Historic building demolition plan By Alesha Capone he Department of Defence (DOD) has proposed to demolish or remove 19 buildings from the Point Cook RAAF base, including structures which are mentioned on the National Heritage List. In a proposal lodged with the Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment, the DOD says that the 19 buildings are “unsafe and economically unfeasible to repair”. he RAAF Base Point Cook is listed on the National and Commonwealth heritage lists
for being the irst military aviation base in Australia, dating from 1913, and the birthplace of the Royal Australian Air Force in 1921. he National Heritage List includes more than 100 buildings on the RAAF site, contributing to the overall historical value of the site. he DOD proposal states there were no “current plans to re-develop the sites which will have buildings removed”. he buildings proposed to be demolished include RAAF standard huts, World War II huts and four Bellman Hangars dating from
1940. hirteen of these buildings are mentioned in the National Heritage List, while 11 are also mentioned on the Commonwealth Heritage List. he proposal states that a heritage impact assessment (HIA) prepared by Biosis last year, “recognises the removal is necessary due to the unsafe condition of the buildings and cost to repair the buildings is economically unfeasible”. he HIA stated that several of the buildings to be demolished should be photographed for
archival purposes. In 2012, a report recommended the RAAF facility at Laverton be closed and consolidated with the Point Cook base. In 2016, the DOD released a plan which said its aim was for the Point Cook base to become a “multi-user, medium-sized operational heritage base” which would include aerodrome operations for Defence, the RAAF Museum and authorised civilian aircrat. he Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment is yet to make a decision on the DOD proposal to demolish the buildings.

Miss Backus said she enjoyed how community-oriented the Point Cook centre is. For this reason, if she wins the $5000 state prize at the Victorian Training Awards, she has pledged to donate a portion of the money to a community cause.
Miss Backus said she wanted residents to contact the centre with their ideas of which Wyndham groups or causes she should donate to – especially groups that are not well-known but do a lot of good in the community. Tegan Backus says that working with children always puts a smile on her face. An education leader at Point Cook World of Learning, and an assistant educator in the “ducklings room” for children aged 18 months to 2.5 years, said she “wouldn’t do anything else”. “I love children – seeing their faces literally lights up my day.” he 26-year-old has been nominated for the annual Victorian Training Awards, which are run by the Department of Education.
Two cases of the coronavirus were detected in Wyndham residents between Sunday and Monday. On Sunday, Wyndham had no active cases of the illness, according to igures from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). However, data released on Monday included two new active cases of COVID-19. Active cases are deined as someone who has tested positive, is in isolation, is being monitored by the DHHS and who has not yet recovered. A total of 57 cases of the virus have been recorded in Wyndham. he total number of coronavirus cases in Victoria has reached more than 1730. Victoria’s Chief Health Oicer Professor Brett Sutton said: “hanks to Victorians playing their part, staying at home and getting tested, we have made some great progress in slowing the spread of coronavirus. “However, we are still seeing transmission in households and other settings. “It remains critical to practice good hygiene – wash your hands regularly and cough and sneeze into a tissue or your elbow and try to avoid touching your face. “Stay 1.5 metres away from anyone you don’t live with and avoid crowds, especially indoors. If you can keep working from home – you must keep working from home. “And if you do feel unwell with any symptoms of coronavirus you should get tested. his includes fever, chills, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose or loss of sense of smell.”

Tarneit Senior College will receive $10,000 from the state government to carry out high priority maintenance work, including loor repairs, painting and skylight repairs. Centre up for auction A Werribee childcare centre will be auctioned this month. he brand-new centre at 24 Azolla Drive will be put up for sale next week, at a portfolio auction to be held by Burgess Rawson at Crown Casino. he childcare centre, which is leased to operator Imagine, features architectural elements including a timber entrance feature and high ceilings. he 825-square metre facility is licensed for 112 long daycare places. Burgess Rawson childcare specialist Natalie Couper said the centre also had one of the strongest leases in the industry, with a 20-year term and two 10-year options. “Importantly it’s a triple net lease, meaning the tenant pays all outgoings including land tax,” Ms Couper said.
“We don’t see triple net leases very oten in Victoria, so this is a rare opportunity. “From an ownership point of view, it’s a true ‘set and forget’ lease, where the incoming purchaser will have no further worry because all costs, including land tax and capital expenditure, are borne by the tenant.” he lease also includes three per cent annual increases and ratchet provisions, meaning rental returns can never be reduced on review. Police investigate racist attack By Alesha Capone Police are investigating an assault which occurred on a bus in Werribee last month, in which racist threats were allegedly made towards the victim. Transit Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the assault, which let a 42-year-old Hoppers Crossing woman with minor injuries. Investigators have been told the woman was assaulted as she got of a bus at the intersection of Derrimut Road and Heath Road on May 27,
about 5.25pm. SBS Punjabi radio interviewed the victim, who said that she was waiting – with a friend – for a bus, when a group of young men and women started to verbally harass them. “hey made us uncomfortable with their rude and abusive behaviour,” the woman told SBS Punjabi. “hey hurled racist comments and made rude gestures. “hey yelled racist things like, f*** of you Indians, go back where you came from. You smell s***.” One of the youths spat at the woman and her
friend as they boarded the bus. Ater getting on the bus, one of the female youths allegedly threw a cold drink into the woman’s face. he group of youths continued verbally harassing the woman and her friend, before she was allegedly punched and kicked to the head and torso. “My nose was bleeding, and my T-shirt was drenched in blood,” the woman told SBS Punjabi. Ater the ofenders led the scene, the woman asked the bus driver to call police. She said another bus passenger also assisted her, and gave a statement to police.
In a separate incident, police have cautioned a 17-year-old boy ater an assault in Point Cook on June 4. Investigators have been told the teenager was involved in an argument with a 33-year-old man in Main Street, before the situation escalated and the older male was assaulted. he 17-year-old boy was interviewed by police and issued with a children’s caution on June 12. Master of an idea Master Dry Cleaners stores across Melbourne are appealing for donations of jackets, coats, blankets and other garments for the Winter Warmers campaign. he family-run business has teamed up with Uniting Vic.Tas to collect warm clothing and blankets, which will be distributed to vulnerable people and families during the colder months. he Masters stores will professionally dry clean the donated items, before passing them on to Uniting Vic.Tas for distribution. David Hudson, the general manager of Hudson’s Dry Cleaning Group – which operates seven Master Dry Cleaners across Melbourne – said all the stores would be participating in the campaign. He said members of the public could drop of donated clothing and blankets at the Master Dry Cleaners stores in Werribee, Seddon, Docklands, Albert Park, South Kingsville, Malvern and Sunbury.

Medal a ‘shared’ honour By Alesha Capone Moira Findlay says she feels “absolutely honoured” to receive a Public Service Medal for outstanding service to education in Victoria. Ms Findlay received the medal as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours, in recognition of her 45-year career as a teacher, principal and community leader. Ms Findlay retired as principal of Iramoo Primary School in Wyndham Vale during April, ater around 27 years at the school. Around 150 staf, parents, colleagues and ex-students attended a function marking Ms Findlay’s retirement, which was held in Werribee during March. Ms Findlay said receiving the Public Service Medal was “the icing on the cake of a career that I have always considered a privilege”. “Iramoo and its wonderful staf deserve this award more than I do,” Ms Findlay said. “No one person could have achieved what we have achieved together. “I’ve had the privilege of working with a wonderful team of people at Iramoo and I share this honour with them.” Ms Findlay, who started at Iramoo as an assistant principal in 1993, said the promotion of equity and excellence in education was her “greatest legacy”. “Almost all of the thousands of teachers I have worked with have heard me repeat again and again that the children leave their disadvantage at the school gate and an excellent education is the thing that can give them choices in life,” she said. his is something which Ms Findlay has a personal insight into – when she was a child, her family migrated from Scotland to Australia in 1963. For two years, they lived at a Fishermans Bend migrant hostel in a hut made

of corrugated iron, which had no plumbing. Five years later, a young Ms Findlay went on to became dux of Graham Street Primary School and went on to study at Mac Robertson Girls’ High School. Ms Findlay said that during her career, she
devoted time to supporting and mentoring future school leaders, particularly women. More than 20 teachers who have worked with Ms Findlay at Iramoo have gone on to become principals and assistant principals in the state government school system.

Regal catches hundreds of drivers Police detected more than 200 driving ofences in Wyndham during the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. Police nabbed 88 speeding drivers, 35 unregistered vehicles, 15 unlicensed drivers, 13 drink drivers, six disqualiied drivers and two drug drivers across four days. Notices were also issued for 21 mobile phone ofences, 19 seatbelt ofences and 13 disobey signs/ signals ofences and four vehicles were impounded as part of the statewide road safety initiative Operation Regal. On Monday, June 8, police detected a vehicle travelling at 113km/h in a 60 kilometre zone on Sneydes Road. he vehicle was impounded. he driver faces $1006 in ines and will appear at the Werribee Magistrates Court at a later date. he same day, police detected a vehicle travelling at 144km/h in an 80 kilometre zone on the Princess Freeway. he driver was issued with an infringement notice and a 12-month license suspension for exceeding the speed limit. Police also issued an infringement notice for failing to indicate when changing lanes. On Sunday, police pulled over a vehicle ater it was seen being driven erratically on the Westgate Freeway in Altona North. Oicers found a ive-year-old girl, who was not restrained properly in the back seat. he driver returned an evidentiary breath test result of 0.263. Alesha Capone

Mr Kashem, who lives in Hoppers Crossing, will conduct the workshop and tour as part of Wyndham council’s Wyndham Together initiative. Mr Kashem said the workshop, to be conducted via the video platform Zoom, would focus on how to take landscape photos with a smart device, such as a mobile phone, and would include tips on photo composition.
For the follow-up photography tour of Werribee South, Mr Kashem is planning to take participants to Campbell’s Cove, Wyndham Harbour and the beach where Werribee River starts. he tour will be limited to a maximum of 20 people, due to COVID-19 restrictions, and will follow social distancing practices. Mr Kashem said Werribee South was an area rich in history and beautiful scenery. He has published a book of photographs capturing the changing landscapes and farming families in the area. “For me, Werribee South is a great spot, with sites and landscapes people don’t know about,”
Mr Kashem said. “Every time I go there, I ind something new or that something has changed.” he online photography workshop will be held from 6-7pm on Wednesday, June 24, and the Werribee South tour from 3.30-5.30pm on Friday, June 26. On Sunday, the state government announced dance studios would be able to have an unlimited amount of students aged under 18 in classes, from June 22 onwards. Adults must still maintain a maximum of 10 students per class. Brittany Flask from Dance Nation Academy (DNA) in Hoppers Crossing said that student numbers had dropped by about 50 per cent since she was forced to close the studio due to pandemic regulations earlier this year. She said the studio restructured its plans to provide students with the option of classes via the Zoom video platform for term two, but that some families did not have a suitable space for children to dance in. Ms Flask said the state government’s weekend announcement was great news for dance students. “If students are 18 years or under we do not have limits on class numbers and we are also able to run sessions without social distancing,” she said. “his means that the students are able to dance together in formations, work on lits/ partner dancing and be spotted in tricks and stunts in their acrobatic classes. “Personally, this has taken a huge weight of my shoulders as our class structures and timetable will not dramatically change once we return.” However, Ms Flask said all Wyndham’s small business owners “still have many challenges ahead”. “More then ever, small business owners need the community to support local.”

Local businesses have come together to raise funds for the 24-hour Mental Health Crisis Line at Werribee Mercy Hospital. he Werribee Hospital Foundation has launched an appeal to raise $30,000 to upgrade the ageing line, which receives more than 25,000 calls each year. Tonia Tribe from the Tonia T Boutique in Werribee said that ater hearing about the appeal, she wanted to help. As a member of the Werribee Business & Tourism Association (WBTA), Ms Tribe and others have launched a rale, in the hopes of raising $6000 for the appeal. Signs help to protect platypus Signs about safe ishing practises have been installed along a stretch of the Lower Werribee River, to help protect the waterway’s platypus population. Melbourne Water has partnered with Wyndham council, he Werribee River Association and Victorian Fisheries Authority to “protect our platypus”. he signs also remind anglers that it’s illegal to use Opera House nets in all Victorian public and private waters. Melbourne Water’s regional services team leader (Werribee), homas Hurst, said entanglement in rubbish and ishing equipment such as old ishing lines and nets could severely injure or kill aquatic animals, such as platypuses. “Melbourne Water encourages Victorians to enjoy Melbourne’s waterways and the recreational opportunities they provide,” Mr Hurst said. “We are asking the community to do their part to continue their help in protecting this vulnerable, and iconic, species from threat.” Werribee River Keeper John Forrester congratulated the authorities for their eforts to protect the river’s platypus population. “Our data shows nearly 40 per cent of our platypus have injuries and death caused by sot or hard circular plastic, litter or rubbish,” Mr Forrester said. Wyndham’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Heather Marcus, said improving the health of the Werribee River through the protection of native habitat was a key action in the council’s City Forest and

Bravo to Sister Silvia By Alesha Capone Italian-born Sister Silvia loves to bring cheer to the residents at Mercy Place Wyndham. Her regular visits – originally as part of the Werribee aged care home’s Lifestyle team, and later as a volunteer – provide language and music support for the Italian residents in particular, and all who enjoy the accordion music she plays. Sister Silvia said that people with dementia can be especially touched by music. “It’s about recalling memories of happy moments, because music is usually associated with happy occasions,” she said. “For example, one lady said, ‘hat’s the irst song I danced to with my husband’, or when I play he Tarantella, they say, ‘My dad used to play that’.” A former teacher, Sister Silvia said she began working and volunteering in aged care ater she realised there was a growing number of older Italians in residential aged care. “Language is such an important thing in our lives, it’s not just a way of communicating, it’s also about our culture,” she said. his year, Sister Silvia is celebrating 50 years since she took her vows as a Sister of Mercy. he milestone was recognised with a special presentation to Sister Silvia, as part of recent Italian Republic Week celebrations at Mercy Place Wyndham. Sister Silvia said that the Italian decorations, music, quizzes and ine Italian food donated by staf and Werribee Italia Pizza and Restaurant, made it a great day. Kindergarten deadline extended Wyndham council has extended the registration period for next year’s three and four-year-old kindergarten placements to June 30, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Driver licence testing resumed on Monday with more than 200 staf employed to meet the coronavirus backlog. Tests were suspended on March 25, putting on hold more than 100,000 licensing appointments including 55,000 drive tests. Learner permit and licence testing will proceed in stages at all VicRoads’ sites, with those forced to postpone due to restrictions given irst priority. Six temporary testing sites will be set up in coming months to increase

capacity, with locations yet to be determined. Minister for Roads, Road Safety and the TAC, Jaala Pulford said the Chief Health Oicer had outlined measures to allow drive testing. “It will take a little bit of time to get through the list of those waiting to take a test,” she said. “We’ve got a plan for doing this safely
and as quickly as possible and are grateful for everyone’s continued patience.” Safety measures taken include cleaning of vehicles used in tests, “proper comprehensive hygiene” for applicants, instructors and testing oicers, and disposable seat covers. Australian Services Union secretary Lisa Darmanin said other safety measures included no more than three people in a test vehicle and the wearing of surgical masks and non-contact temperature testing for at least the next four weeks. “he Australian Services Union has been consistent that drive tests should not
recommence until it was safe for VicRoads workers and the public,” she said. “Reopening drive tests with these safety measures is good news for VicRoads staf and for everyone wanting to get a drivers licence.” Since restrictions in March, VicRoads approved more than 2,700 licence tests for people who would have faced undue hardship. his exemption will continue to be available. Heavy vehicle testing and motorcycle tests will continue as they have been during the past two months. VicRoads will contact people whose tests have been postponed to reschedule.

Two young Werribee business owners are optimistic that trade will perk up for their mobile cofee trailer, as COVID-19 restrictions ease. Many Ho and Kevin Noble started Barrel of Beans in 2018, when they were aged 22 and 24 years old. “It has always been a dream of both of ours, to operate a successful business together, and the collaboration of both of our skills made Barrel of Beans possible,” Mr Noble said. Mr Noble said that since starting out, he and Ms Ho had taken their cofee trailer to the Melbourne International Flower Show 2019, an international equestrian event at Werribee Park and the 2020 Olympic Sailing World Championships, hosted at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club. He said that before the coronavirus pandemic lockdown, Barrel of Beans had a full calendar of bookings for events to be held this year.

He described the council’s existing plan to defer rates for some businesses for six months because of the pandemic as “not good enough” and said Wyndham was home to many
migrants and young families who had already lost jobs or businesses in the current crisis. Several Wyndham councillors criticised the move, one comparing the idea to a Monty Python skit. Cr Henry Barlow, who was irst elected to the council in 1997, said: “his would have to be the worst notice of motion I’ve ever heard in my life”. “It looks as if it comes out of a Monty Python sketch.” Cr Barlow said that cutting rates by 10 per cent would give the majority of residents an
extra $2.80 to $4 per week. He said he sent Cr Khan an email on March 31, urging Cr Khan to be transparent about where the cuts would be “otherwise this just looks like blatant electioneering with a council election coming up”. Cr Kim McAliney said Cr Khan had not provided any inancial modelling to support a 10 per cent rate reduction, which would result in “severe cuts” to the council’s capital programs and staf. Cr Peter Maynard said a 10 per cent cut in rates would result in the loss of about $21
million from the council’s annual budget. “his is an ill-conceived and unwarranted notice of motion, that has no sustainability for this council whatsoever,” he said. “I think it’s nothing but a vote-grab.” Cr Tony Hooper described the notice of motion as “grandstanding at best and outright manipulation at worst”. Cr John Gibbons said: “It’s a crazy motion and I oppose it”. Cr Khan was the only councillor to vote in favour of the motion, although Cr Walter Villagonzalo abstained from the inal vote.

Stepping up to help our elderly By Alesha Capone Dr Hanatsu Nagano has achieved worldwide acclaim for designing shoe insoles which help to prevent falls in elderly people. But Dr Nagano, a postdoctoral research fellow at Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus, says he does not aim to win awards or gain recognition. Instead, the Tarneit resident said he looks to “commit myself into projects that I believe will help society”. Dr Nagano created the insoles while completing his PhD, ater two of his grandparents in Japan sufered falls. “When I was in the last year of my bachelor degree, I was looking for something worthwhile devoting my life into,” Dr Nagano said. “I was given an ofer for honours research for falls prevention and coincidently, my grandparents fell. “I took this as the fate and since then, I have been fully dedicated into this project.” he ISEAL insoles – which are named ater the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Active Living at Victoria University – have a series of raised bumps that follow a foot’s ideal centre of pressure to help with side-to-side balance; a shock-absorbing contoured heel; and a forefront that helps increase minimum toe clearance. Research has shown the insoles lessen the risk of falls in senior citizens, which annually cause injuries to one-in-three elderly people across the globe. “As soon as the irst prototype insoles were developed, the irst thing I did was to send them to my grandparents,” Dr Nagano said. Dr Nagano said the entire process of inventing the insoles “has been long and hard” – from human trials involving more than 100 people, to inding manufacturers capable of

Mazda CX-9 is a large, handsome SUV that’s been popular in Australia since it was released in Australia in 2016. To keep it fresh in this highly competitive market segment it was updated in 2018 and recently had a solid makeover for 2020. We spent four weeks in one to see how it feels now. Unfortunately our test period coincided with the early days of serious restrictions on movement due to Covid-19. We didn’t do any of-road work, but to be somewhat cynical, very few owners do. Mazda Australia is well aware of this so sells the CX-9 with two-wheel-drive as well as 4WD. Our test vehicle did have all-wheel-drive. Nevertheless the 400km plus on-road driving we did do reminded us why we like it so much. he largest Mazda SUV is ofered in Sport, Touring, GT and Azami variants.
Infotainment Mazda CX-9’s infotainment screen has been enlarged to nine inches. It’s one of the best on the market, for its ease of use. he CX-9 uses Mazda MZD Connect system to provide access to the internet, social media, email, Pandora, Stitcher and Aha as well as hands-free voice and text messaging through Bluetooth. All models get built-in satellite navigation.here are USB ports in the front centre console and two in the rear seat armrest.

he CX-9 now has G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus). his uses brake control to help stabilise and return the vehicle to straight-line running when coming out of a turn. he all-wheel-drive system has Mazda’s Of-Road Traction Assist, which makes driving easier on undulating roads, preventing tyre slip. All models now have the convenience of Auto-hold in the Electric Parking Brake, which holds the vehicle stopped, even if you’ve taken your foot of the brake. his Mazda has good low-down torque that makes it pleasant to drive on a day-to-day basis. Its 12-metre turning circle can make parking a hassle in tight spaces, however its parking sensors, reversing camera and the rear cross traic alert does simplify things. Out of town it’s like a luxury cruising sedan. Fuel consumption is a pleasingly low at about seven to nine litres per 100 kilometres on country roads and motorways. But around town the size of the machine means you’re likely to use 12 to 15 litres per hundred.
