War medals returned A collection of stolen World War II medals have been returned to their rightful owners with a bit of help from the Caroline Springs RSL. The service medals for Harold Hawking were found discarded beside a bin in Windsor after being stolen from a storage cage in Albert Park belonging to Mr Hawking’s son, Paul. With a friend of the man who found the medals sharing a connection to the Caroline Springs RSL, president Andrew Marshall set about returning them. “We ended up with them and I worked with the vice president at the Melton branch to check up on them and eventually found their owner,” Mr Marshall said. “To some people these medals mean a hell of a lot, so to get them back to the family is really special.” The medals, complete with service records from Hawking Senior’s time in Syria and New Guinea, were returned to Paul Hawking on June 5, who was happy to have the special mementos back. “I’m not sure when they were taken, I just went to ind them in my storage cage one day and they were gone,” he said. “It’s good to have them back in the family, and we’ve got a bit of a story to go with it now, as well as the historical signiicance.” Ewen McRae

Hospital ‘in your hands’ By Ewen McRae Planning for the future Melton Hospital is well underway and residents are being encouraged to have their say. he state government recently released a survey for residents and community members to give input on what type of health care they would like to see and which services they think need to be improved. he survey is part of a $2.4 million project

to plan the range of services that would be delivered by a new hospital and how they’ll link with other regional healthcare facilities. he process, including community feedback, will help form a business case that will outline the issues, solutions, timeframes and costings for a new hospital. Melton mayor Lara Carli said it was important for residents to make their voices heard to ensure the hospital best met the needs of the region.

“his is a really important part of the planning process where you have the opportunity to help shape a future Melton Hospital around the healthcare priorities of you and your family,” Cr Carli said. “More than 21,000 people in the Melton community supported council’s campaign to build a Melton Hospital – an incredible and unprecedented joining of forces which helped champion the need for the Victorian government to undertake a business case.

“Now, residents have the chance to help ensure a future facility delivers the best possible care and services for our community. “It’s really exciting to see that planning for this critically-needed hospital is progressing.” he government plans to have the business case for the hospital complete by the end of the year, with council hoping for construction to begin in 2022, ahead of a 2026 opening. he survey will be open until August 3 at engage.vic.gov.au/future-health-care-melton

Regal catches speeding drivers By Ewen McRae Nearly 200 speeding ofences were detected in Melton and Moorabool as part of a special police operation across the Queens Birthday long weekend. Operation Regal was a statewide operation targeting road ofences from June 5 to 8, and while there were good results in some areas, speeding was a common issue locally. Police detected 119 speeding ofences in the Melton region and a further 61 in Moorabool, while there were also 24 unlicensed or disqualiied drivers detected.

death of a motorcyclist near Hoddles Creek prompted Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Libby Murphy to urge riders to take extra care in the winter months. “Even though we are heading into cooler weather, people are keen to get a couple more rides in as the coronavirus restrictions ease,” she said. “I urge that people ride to the conditions, as particularly in these cooler temperatures there is a risk that roads will be wet, visibility is poorer and in regional locations, black ice may be on the road. Sunshine’s Millenium Man to go Much loved Sunshine icon Millennium Man is set to be removed. While the future of the statue – which has stood outside the Sunshine Marketplace since 1997 – has been up for debate in recent times as plans for a development of the centre progressed, a statement from Vicinity Centres last week conirmed that the statue would not be restored as residents had hoped. “Sunshine Marketplace’s Millennium Man is being removed due to signiicant damage,” the spokesperson said. “Millennium Man is now over 20 years old and over the past two decades the sculpture’s exposure to weather and other elements has resulted in signiicant damage that our expert consultants have advised is impossible to repair. “With the safety of the local community our top priority over the coming days we are taking the necessary steps to remove the sculpture and the area will remain fenced of while these works take place.” Local resident Dinesh Jayasuriya said Millennium Man had become more than just a statue to the Sunshine community, and lamented that a decision on its future had been made in the middle of a pandemic. “If it wasn’t for COVID I think we would have hundreds, if not a thousand people around Millennium Man to protest this,” Mr Jayasuriya said. “he love for him is massive, and people don’t understand his value to the local community unless you are local. “A lot of people that grew up in Sunshine have an emotional connection to him. hey played near him, they met their parents there and he’s a reminder of their childhood, in fact he’s been there long enough that those that were kids when he went in now have kids of their own, and so it continues.” Mr Jayasuriya said he hoped Vicinity Centres reconsidered and made restoring Millennium Man a part of any redevelopment plans. “If Vicinity think they are going to be part of our community in the long term, then they should talk to us,” he said.

“It is also important for drivers to take appropriate care when sharing the road with motorcyclists. We know if they are hit by a car, the outcome is never good.” Police have also re-enforced that seat belts are mandatory, ater a spike in instances of drivers or passengers not adhering to the law. Just ive seatbelt ofences were recorded in Melton and Moorabool, but there were more than 200 across the state. “Your seatbelt acts as a life vest if in a collision. I implore you to please make sure your passengers are always buckled up,” Assistant Commissioner Murphy said.

Melton and Moorabool continue to respond strongly to the threat of COVID-19, with just one new case in the week up to June 11. While Moorabool had zero new cases and has only recorded three cases in total, Melton’s single positive test is a good sign for the region, with 43 of the 44 cases in the municipality now recovered. However, health authorities have reinforced the vigilance message, and also urged anyone with symptoms that attended a protest rally in the CBD last week to self-isolate for 14 days, following news of a positive case in one protester. housands gathered in the city on the long weekend as part of worldwide ‘Black Lives Matter’ protests. “hanks to Victorians playing their part, staying at home and getting tested, we have made some great progress in slowing the spread of coronavirus,” Victoria’s Chief Health Oicer Professor Brett Sutton said. “Our low rate of community transmission means we have been able to ease some restrictions. “You can have up to 20 people in your home or in a public place. Restaurants, cafes and pubs can have up to 20 customers dine-in, and businesses such as beauty therapists can see clients again. “And if you do feel unwell with any symptoms of coronavirus you should get tested.” Ewen McRae

Funding to help Moorabool grow By Ewen McRae Moorabool council is eligible to apply for funding from the state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund for the irst time. he fund, which helps councils in high growth areas fund community facilities, was previously only available to Victoria’s 10 interface councils, including Melton. But the state government recently announced an additional $25 million and expansion of the program to include six peri-urban councils, including Moorabool.

Moorabool mayor David Edwards said the council would immediately begin looking at what projects could be eligible for support from the fund and make applications. “he guidelines state we can apply for a number of shovel-ready projects, or just one project, as long as they are community-based projects,” Cr Edwards said. “his can include projects such as community centres, libraries, sports pavilions and streetscape upgrades. “We as a council need to have a look at what shovel-ready projects we have … that

can start within six months of funding being announced – which will be in August – and completed within 12 months of construction commencing, as per the state government guidelines.” he fund has already invested more than $29 million into the Melton council area for 29

diferent projects. Melton MP Steve McGhie said it was important for councils to make full use of state government investment to keep up with demand for infrastructure in fast-growing regions such as Melton and Moorabool. “Improving local facilities is vital for communities in new suburbs to help them feel engaged and connected to where they live,” Mr McGhie said. “I encourage councils to apply, so our rapidly-growing local communities get the facilities they need and deserve.”

School footy call out he football program at Lakeview Senior College has resulted in three players being drated to AFL in recent years, and it’s looking for its next stars. he program has been running at the school since 2007, giving students the chance for extra training and physical conditioning sessions that work around their VCE or VCAL studies. With AFL players James Sicily, Will Hoskin-Elliot and recent dratee Tristan Xerri coming through the program, co-ordinator Michael Pisani said it had been a long-term success. “here’s lots of access to strength and conditioning through the local Anytime Fitness, and we have coaches that come in to work with the players as well,” Mr Pisani said. “We’ve got an ailiation with the Western Jets as well, so it provides a great opportunity for players to access their program. “It’s all about helping players reach their full

potential, whether that’s AFL, Nab League, or their local clubs.” Now at North Melbourne, Xerri was full of praise for the program and the help it gave him to reach his AFL goal. “he opportunity to touch a football 3-4 times a week at school, on top of training and playing outside of school, really helped me develop and ine-tune my skills, especially my kicking,” he said. “here was a little extra motivation in my classes through my time at Lakeview because I knew if I didn’t hand in my assignments in time that I’d miss out on footy.” Details: michael.pisani@education.vic.gov.au Ewen McRae AFL program co-ordinator Michael Pisani and Lakeview Secondary students Nick, Stephanie, Riley and Tate. New scanner for Marsh By Ewen McRae he Bacchus Marsh community has access to the latest in medical imaging technology on their doorstep, thanks to a $1 million investment at Bacchus Marsh Hospital. A CT Scanner, digital x-ray machine and dental imaging equipment has been added by Lake Imaging. Previously, x-rays and ultrasounds have been available, but patients requiring a CT scan were forced to go out of town. Ultrasound equipment was installed about a

year ago. “he people of Bacchus Marsh now have access to state-of-the-art equipment, providing more advanced image quality than before, faster scanning times and better access to appointments,” Lake Imaging general manager Dan Hibert said. A CT scan helps doctors to diagnose complex bone fractures and tumours, in all parts of the body by using x-rays and a computer to create pictures of human organs, bones and other tissues throughout the body in greater detail than a general x-ray.

Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Belinda Scott said the new scanner was essential for the growing town, with the population forecast to double in the next 20 years. “he addition of the CT Scanner at Lake Imaging in Bacchus Marsh allows our patients to have 24-hour access to this diagnostic service without the need to travel out of Bacchus Marsh,” Ms Scott said. “Our health service, through our partnership with Lake Imaging, has enhanced the high quality patient care available for our community.”

Shire at odds with hotspot claim By Ewen McRae Moorabool mayor David Edwards said he was “confused” as to how his council ended up on a Queensland government list of COVID-19 hotspots, but urged it to be removed. A COVID-19 website by the Queensland government, which lists hotspots around the country to warn travellers, was published recently. Moorabool, Melton and Wyndham are the three council areas listed as virus hotspots in Victoria. However Moorabool is among the least

afected council areas in the state, with just three cases since the virus irst struck. Melton has had 44 cases, however just one of those is currently active. By contrast, the Melbourne council area has recorded 109 cases, and Stonnington, in the eastern suburbs, has had 94. Cr Edwards said it was a mystery why Queenslanders were being warned about Moorabool. “here is a lot of confusion as to how Moorabool ended up on this list,” Cr Edwards said.

‘‘

Being named on this list has caused some confusion and anger

’’

- David Edwards

“But we’re calling on the Queensland government to check the map again and take Moorabool of as a hotspot, as they must have confused our shire with another shire. “Being named on this list has caused some

confusion and anger in our community and we ask that Queensland has another look at its reasoning behind creating its hotspots and, if they need such a list, to ensure it is an accurate relection of where there are COVID-19 clusters. “Once any border restrictions are eased and people start travelling intestate again, we’d love to welcome Queenslanders to come and have a hike in our state parks and gorges, enjoy a red wine at one of our wineries, enjoy our art trails and have a cofee at one of our many cafes across the shire.”

Zooming in on leaders he next generation of leaders in Moorabool had only just started their meetings for the year when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, but that hasn’t stopped them making an impact. he council’s community leadership program had its irst meeting in March, just before lockdown measures came into efect. Rather than put on hold a full year of planned meetings and events, the group has been continuing online through the Zoom app to discuss ideas, learn from each other, and develop actions that will beneit their community. Initial challenges around getting participants up to speed with the use of the technology and working in a new way have been overcome, and the group is working well. Guest speakers from council and community are also zooming in to provide inspiration and discussions to allow for questions and sharing of expertise and ideas.

Recently, the group was visited online by Moorabool mayor David Edwards, providing an opportunity for participants to learn more about council meetings and the experience of being a councillor. “I really enjoyed the opportunity to jump on Zoom and talk to the participants,” Cr Edwards said. “I ended up talking to them for longer than anticipated because they were such an engaged group. It’s fantastic to see the way they have worked to overcome the obstacle of not being able to complete the program in the traditional way.” his year’s group is now half way through the program. Council has committed to funding the program again in 2021 and 2022, so there will be opportunities for people to take part in the future. Ewen McRae

New sports ovals on track Significant milestones on some exciting major sporting projects have been reached in recent months. Stage 1A of the Eynesbury Recreation Reserve is now complete, while the first stage of the MacPherson Park redevelopment is nearing completion. Once finished, both projects will provide much-needed training and competition spaces for local sporting clubs as well as places for the whole community to gather and stay active.

We’re grateful that this $13.8 million project has been made possible through a partnership with the Federal Government (Building Better Regions Fund), the Victorian Government (Growing Suburbs Fund), and AFL Victoria.

MacPherson Park Redevelopment A synthetic oval with lighting, a netball court with lighting and warm up space, a cricket net training facility, and a community pavilion with change rooms and meeting rooms are almost ready to welcome football, cricket and netball clubs.

Eynesbury Recreation Reserve A brand new senior AFL and cricket oval has been developed, and irrigation, fencing and drainage installed for Stage 1A. With Stage 1B now underway, it won’t be long before the community can start using this fantastic new facility. This next stage will deliver a pavilion with social room, kitchen, change rooms, umpires’ room, first aid and storage, hard courts, adventure play space, car parking, lighting and cricket nets. These works are scheduled to be complete by mid-2021.

This $13.3 million Stage 1 development is revitalising the eastern aspect of MacPherson Park and has been supported by funding from the Victorian Government (Growing Suburbs Fund) and AFL Victoria. Council is now preparing funding applications for Stage 2 of the redevelopment, which will include a new soccer pavilion and two new sports grounds.

Stepping up to help our elderly By Alesha Capone Dr Hanatsu Nagano has achieved worldwide acclaim for designing shoe insoles which help to prevent falls in elderly people. But Dr Nagano, a postdoctoral research fellow at Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus, says he does not aim to win awards or gain recognition. Instead, the Tarneit resident said he looks to “commit myself into projects that I believe will help society”. Dr Nagano created the insoles while completing his PhD, ater two of his grandparents in Japan sufered falls. “When I was in the last year of my bachelor degree, I was looking for something worthwhile devoting my life into,” Dr Nagano said. “I was given an ofer for honours research for falls prevention and coincidently, my grandparents fell. “I took this as the fate and since then, I have been fully dedicated into this project.” he ISEAL insoles – which are named ater the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Active Living at Victoria University – have a series of raised bumps that follow a foot’s ideal centre of pressure to help with side-to-side balance; a shock-absorbing contoured heel; and a forefront that helps increase minimum toe clearance. Research has shown the insoles lessen the risk of falls in senior citizens, which annually cause injuries to one-in-three elderly people across the globe. “As soon as the irst prototype insoles were developed, the irst thing I did was to send them to my grandparents,” Dr Nagano said. Dr Nagano said the entire process of inventing the insoles “has been long and hard” – from human trials involving more than 100 people, to inding manufacturers capable of

producing the product. Dr Nagano also established his company, Global Bridge Melbourne Pty Ltd in Tarneit, and entered into agreements with VU, manufacturers and retailers. For the creation of the insole, Dr Nagano has received awards, including the Most

Innovative New Care Product in the World for three consecutive years at he Globals, which recognise development in seniors’ goods and services. He has been inducted into the Global Healthcare Hall of Fame and has been given a Professional Achievement Alumni Award by VU.

Dr Nagano is currently working with Professor Yoshiyuki Sankai, chief executive of the robotics company CyberDyne, to develop a “Smart” insole, which will be detect risks in walking and running such as falls, osteoarthritis and foot deformities. Details: https://iseal-insole.net/

Surviving winter workouts As the days get shorter, the air gets chillier and the mornings frostier, it can be tempting to ditch your workout and sip cofee instead. Personal trainer heresa Prior shares some of the secrets that enable her to work outdoors, stay sane, warm and dry. First things irst. Once your feet are cold, that’s it! he rest of you is cold and it’s too hard to warm back up. So, to keep feet warm and dry, here are a few great ideas: Waterproof your shoes. Most shoe shops and outdoor adventure shops will stock waterprooing or water-repelling spray. Be sure to check the instructions before you use it, and apply it the night before. You’ll need to do it every week or so, but this one is a game changer. Invest in woollen socks. Merino socks will change your life. hey keep your feet warm and dry, and even if they do get wet, you stay warm. Have spares. If you’ve got errands to run ater your workout, have a spare pair of socks and shoes ready and waiting for you in the car. Yes, laundry increases in winter – it’s nothing to go through three or four pairs of socks in a day. But your feet will stay warm! Clothing choices can make or break how you feel about winter. here’s nothing better than a long walk outside in winter. And here’s what to do: • Wear layers. his is a tip picked up before hiking up the snow-covered Mt Feathertop as a 15 year-old and is as old as time. But honestly, wearing multiple layers that you can take of as you warm up during the workout, then put back on as we cool down is going to make things so much easier. hink singlet, T-shirt, long-sleeved T-shirt, vest, jumper. Even a pair of trackies over your leggings. • Fleecy leggings. We live in a truly magical time when one of our biggest active wear manufacturers has been cluey enough to produce workout tights designed for winter!

It’s important to wear the right clothing when exercising in winter. (James Stapledon, Staples Media)

• Fleecy stockings. Before the advent of leecy leggings, we used to wear a pair of leecy stockings under workout leggings. Lovely and warm, with no restriction to movement, these were a wardrobe staple for the winter months. Lastly, it’s the little things that will make the biggest diference. • Workout gloves. We all know ingers can physically hurt from the cold winter air, and from holding the cold, winter kettlebells! Invest

in a good pair of full length (not ingerless) workout gloves and it will change your life. Workout gloves are diferent to regular gloves in that they have a reinforced palm and grip on the inner face for holding onto and using equipment. • Headwear. Having cold ears is really uncomfortable and can make you feel colder than you really are. Grab yourself a buf (a thick headband that can be used as a scarf as well), a

beanie, or something in between and feel the diference! • Wear sunscreen. How counter-intuitive does this sound? But it’s actually not. Sunscreen will help prevent the negative afects that the cold, drier winter air can have on your skin. • Jackets. If you’ve layered well, you won’t need a pufy, down-illed jacket that will restrict your movements. But you may want to wear a thin, breathable spray jacket to keep you drier in the misty ‘spit’ that can sometimes roll through as the sun warms up the clouds. • Bring a bag. No one wants their phone or car key fob getting wet on the dewy grass. And there is nothing worse than putting back on a wet jumper ater it has been sitting on the ground. So, give yourself somewhere to put everything and to keep it all safe and dry. Even a sturdy, plastic bag will do here (great to reuse them!). • Do all this for the kids. In comparison to some other countries, and even some other states of Australia (ahem, Tasmania and ACT), we don’t really have a long or particularly cold winter. Rug the kids up, waterproof their shoes and help them enjoy being outdoors in the cooler weather so that you can still ind your workout time! here you have it. With these hacks, you’ll still be able to keep up your exercise routines. You’ll be thankful when you’re ahead of the game as the warmer months roll back around. heresa Prior is the owner of heresa Prior Personal Training, a group itness option for the mums of Westmeadows and surrounds.
