Fall in love with colour It’s easy to be impressed by the images you see in magazines and on design sites – the challenge is knowing how to make them work in your own home. To address this common frustration, Dulux has partnered with interior stylist Julia Green to guide you step-by-step on how to give your rooms an ‘on trend’ makeover. “he real trick is looking for the ideas behind the images and inding ways to make them work in your own home,” says Julia. “If you’re looking to liven a room, are short on time and don’t want to spend a fortune, paint can be your best friend, allowing you to breathe new life into tired spaces with minimal cost and efort. “Add in the right sot furnishings or paint your existing accessories and you’ve got an up-to-date look in no time.” Faced with a bland, white bedroom, Julia took inspiration from Dulux’s Repair palette to give it some much-needed personality and interest. “While it had lovely features such as wooden loorboards, white walls and shutters, it was crying out for some character,” Julia says. “When it comes to choosing colour, I believe it’s the emotional connection we make that is the most important thing – perhaps even more important than how we dress a space. I knew the deep greenish blues and hints of cinnamon would be perfect for creating a warm, welcoming feel in this bedroom.” Julia looked for easy ways to incorporate doses of colour in paint, accessories and sot furnishings. “I chose an artwork for the back wall that was illed with beautiful, earthy tones, all present in the Dulux Repair palette, and used this to inform the rest of my colour choices. I selected

a bold hue for the back wall to give the room depth. I layered this up with touches of rich green by painting the existing bedside-table drawer with Dulux Aquanamel in Plasticine and adding lush velvet sot furnishings and tall potted plants on either side of the bed. “I’m a irm believer that every room’s scheme needs an element of surprise to really bring it to life – here, I painted a sot terracotta shade on
the mirror rim and Auburn Flair on the base of a ceramic pot, which contrast beautifully with all the blues and greens. he ceiling, trims and other walls were already painted in a warm white. “A medley of interesting textures inish the look – a large blue tonal rug, touches of raw timber, velvet and slubby linens.” he result is a warm, rejuvenating bedroom.
When choosing colours, think about the mood you want to create. I chose greeny-blues and accents of cinnamon and terracotta here because I wanted to create a cosy, refreshing vibe. • Start with an artwork: Take your colour cues from a key painting or print to give your room scheme an intentional feel. • Add energy to the space with one or two jolts of an unexpected colour. And remember; contrast is key. • If you’re adding white to the mix, choose one with similar undertones as your brights. • Think beyond walls – use paint to revamp old furniture and accessories too. You may just ind yourself falling right back in love with them! • Have fun and experiment – remember, if you change your mind about a colour, you can always paint over it. To feel conident with your choice, always start with a sample pot or A4-size swatch so you can live with the colour for a few days without fully committing.

Guardian of Seaworks Williamstown’s Seaworks Maritime Precinct is preparing to reopen with ‘The Guardian’ at the gate. Reminiscent of a giant lion, the 10-metre puppet created by The Blanck Canvas has crept into Williamstown to be tested along the waterfront. Seaworks executive oficer Glenn Jones said the site was waiting to open up to the public again as coronavirus restrictions were eased. “We’re hoping to reactivate the site a little bit more and we’ll be able to put on performances here, as well as people being able to come and see behind the scenes of how these things are built. “What we plan to do, as we’re allowed to when we open up, is look at the possibility of puppetry workshops and open performances as far as rehearsals … people can just come along and see how it’s all done.” “Once we get some clariication on the restrictions being reduced to allow greater number, then we’ll be opening it up to the potential for extra shows and performances,” he said. Tributes low for referee By Goya Dmytryshchak A rugby union-loving ireighter who died from cancer is now in heaven refereeing the game, his loved ones say. Altona North’s Brett Waterford, 47, was farewelled with a guard of honour at Williamstown on hursday. He was a referee and co-ordinator with Power House Juniors in Newport, where his son, Finn, plays. His wife, Cathy, has set up a GoFundMe page in his honour to support community rugby union and refereeing. Hazel Tiernan, who served on the committee with Mr Waterford, said the community was devastated. “We are heartbroken at the club,”
she said. “He was just a beautiful man.” Finn has been at the club 10 years and his wife Cathy is also on the committee. “Brett’s been on the committee with about six of us that have, over the last couple of years, really committed to kids and their rugby and grassroots sport and making sure that it’s accessible for everybody – boys and girls.” “[He was] so loved. And 47-years-old … for that beautiful family, is just unfair.” It was his commitment to the Victorian Rugby Referees Association that led to Mr Waterman last year receiving the Best Clubman Award. He received a National Medal Citation from the Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Service the
same year, in recognition of his diligent service. Mr Waterford was also an army reservist and army personnel helped form the guard of honour at his service. “He was a much respected Sapper, and CPL Brett Waterford was awarded SOM and became a Transport NCO [non-commissioned oicer] who was noted for always giving 100 per cent,” the fundraising page states. he service was live-streamed to comply with COVID-19 restrictions. In lieu of lowers, Mr Waterford’s family has requested a donation to support community rugby union and refereeing to honour his memory. Mr Waterford is survived by his wife, Cathy, Finn and mother Kate.

Brooklyn Community Hall revamp
Great news for the community - the Brooklyn Community Hall will soon be redeveloped into a more modern facility with new meeting rooms, a central foyer, updated hall, improved kitchen and toilet facilities, and an outdoor deck area. Council has responded to local community advocacy by developing a proposed concept design for the hall. The people of Brooklyn and beyond are invited to have their say on the design until Sunday 14 June. The proposed concept plan, a short video, artist’s impressions of the redeveloped hall and survey to provide feedback is available at participate. hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/brooklyn-community-hallredevelopment. Construction is anticipated to start in November 2020 with an estimated completion time of 10 months.
Street theatre coming to Altona North and Brooklyn
Illuminated angels, bandicoots, zebras and spontaneous art will visit Altona North and Brooklyn during July as part of Council’s Art Apart creative grants. The Art Apart program encourages artists and creative practitioners to deliver innovative and creative projects that engage the community of Hobsons Bay using a mix of digital, virtual or socially-distant modes of delivery. Council Services open for business Council is pleased to announce the reopening of a number of services to the public, following the state government’s easing of restrictions throughout Victoria. In line with the latest advice, safety measures will remain in place to ensure the wellbeing of community members and Council staf.
Council is inviting community feedback on its draft Ferguson Street Level Crossing Removal Precinct Plan, which seeks to address the known safety concerns and improve public space opportunities surrounding the North Williamstown Train Station. Future work on the Victorian Government Level Crossing Removal Project’s (LXRP) Ferguson Street project presents an ideal opportunity to also redevelop the land around the station. The ideas for this work are presented in our draft plan, which would complement their project regardless of the design (ie rail over road or rail under road), and is yet to be determined by LXRP. Once Council’s precinct plan is updated to relect community feedback, Council will advocate to the Victorian Government for funding and partnership support to undertake the proposed precinct upgrades. Edwards Reserve Play Space upgrade
Works to upgrade the play space at Edwards Reserve in South Kingsville have begun. The upgrade includes replacing the timber boardwalk structure, improved natural shade in the play space and increased play opportunities in shaded areas. The play space will be closed to the public during construction and is expected to reopen in July 2020. The rest of the reserve will remain open to the public. Interpretation signs at Truganina Park
Five new interpretation signs have been recently installed at Truganina Park to provide visitors with interesting facts about lora and fauna found throughout the reserve. The new signs include information about the critically endangered Swift Parrot, the elusive Altona Skipper Butterly and coastal saltmarshes. The signs will encourage visitors to further experience the less well-known spaces within the reserve. Backlash over council pay rises By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong council is facing a backlash from a group of ratepayers over plans to impose a two per cent rate rise in next year’s budget and boost its spending on wages and expenses. he Maribyrnong Ratepayers Group has ired up over the council’s proposed budget, arguing the expenses are excessive and fail to consider the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on residents. he council has defended its decisions, pointing to a $4.1 million package it says will
assist those hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic, despite an expected $15 million hit to its own revenue. MRG spokeswoman Verity Webb said a 6.7 per cent rise in the council’s wages bill and a 4.3 per cent increase in councillor expenses showed the council was “out of touch”. “For council to remain out of touch in the current climate … has, I think, really shocked even the most blasé of ratepayers, the most hardened among us who have seen rates go up, up, up every year for 20 years,” she said.
“hey are still absolutely shocked. he directors have shown no leadership whatsoever to not take any pay cuts, to freeze any allowances they may be entitled to.” he council’s proposed 2020-21 budget forecasts wages and salaries expenditure of $48 million, up from $45 million this inancial year. Ms Webb said a social media backlash to the budget suggested the council had a ight on its hands. Council chief executive Stephen Wall said the council’s Enterprise Bargaining Agreement
meant the staf salary increase for the 2020-21 inancial year is 2.25 per cent. “his cannot be reduced as it is the amount council and unions have signed up to through the Fair Work Commission,” he said. Mr Wall said the council’s revenue is expected to be down by $6.7 million in 2019-20 and $8.6 million in 2020-21 due to COVID-19. It has nevertheless proposed $4.1 million in additional spending to support the community during this time. Public submissions close June 18.

New chapter in The Steve’s journey Ater some deliberation about Sea Shepherd’s “controversial” anti-whaling tactics, its decommissioned Steve Irwin ship at Williamstown has been granted heritage listing. It needed a clear majority to be accepted onto the Australian Register of Historic Vessels. Ship4Good not-for-proit founder Kerrie Goodall submitted the nomination with help from fellow maritime heritage champion, Valentina Bydanova. Australia’s Sea Shepherd lagship was used in campaigns for 13 years before being permanently moored at Williamstown. In her submission to the ARHV, Ms Goodall said the Steve had illed a “spiritual and political
void” in its service of Neptune’s Navy. “ M/Y Steve Irwin has employed direct-action tactics to explore, investigate, document, and take action to expose and confront illegal and environmentally-damaging activities that afect marine habitats and result in the slaughter of wildlife,” the submission states. “he M/Y Steve Irwin and crew have taken action and raised public awareness where no one else would, illing the spiritual and political void let by Australian and global governments and industry.” Built in Scotland in 1975 and registered in Rotterdam, the ship’s former names were Westra (1975-2005) and Robert Hunter (2006-2007).
“I’m proud that we have had this recognition from ARHV and that it can contribute to the interest of maritime ‘exhibits’ at Seaworks,” Ms Goodall told Star Weekly. Australian National Maritime Museum historic vessels curator David Payne said the heritage listing took a bit of deliberation, as had been anticipated. “To satisfy everyone, the text was redrated a couple of times, mainly around the whaling activities, which have always been the controversial point. In addition, more clarity was requested on its current plans.”
Two workers from a Laverton North waste management and recycling facility last week tested positive to COVID-19. It comes as Hobsons Bay records one active case out of a total of 19, and Maribyrnong remains at 16. As of Friday, there were 1681 cases statewide and 19 people had died. Global Resource Recovery (GRR), located in the municipality of Wyndham, closed on May 29 ater two workers linked to a Keilor Downs family outbreak were diagnosed with the virus. “While the risk of transmission is low, as a precaution the facility has closed to allow a deep clean to be undertaken, contact testing and tracing,” the Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement. Close contacts of workers were being tested and quarantined for 14 days until June 9. GRR issued a statement that its workers had been infected as “the result of social contact outside the workplace”. “GRR made the decision to temporarily close the Laverton North facility, as a precautionary measure on May 29, voluntarily,” it said. “Now we are operating on a restricted basis.” Hobsons Bay council is introducing a COVID-19 Certiicate of Assessment to help businesses attract customers and safely reopen their doors. Restaurants, cafes, beauty salons and tattoo parlours that complete a self-assessment and meet all requirements set by the council’s public health unit will receive a certiicate they can display. Top honour for community service By Goya Dmytryshchak he head of a co-op who helped keep the former Altona hospital site in community hands, has received an OAM for service to the community of Hobsons Bay. Altona’s Maree Duield, a physiotherapist at Werribee Mercy Hospital heads up the Hobsons Bay Community Advancement Co-operative, operating from the old hospital building now known as the Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre. She has been a board member since 1997 and formerly chaired Friends of Altona Hospital.
Ms Duield said Dr Louis Joel started Altona’s “bush hospital” in 1932 and it became a public hospital in the late 1950s before being closed in 1996 during the Kennett era. “Werribee Hospital was closed around the same period,” she said. “I suppose the diference was that Altona Hospital’s origins were as a community hospital. here was always this strong community ainity with the hospital, so it was a real tragedy for the local community for a hospital just to be sold of – boom, gone. “here was a very guttural community response that we needed to do something about this, and there was an incredible
coming-together of many organisations – community groups, unions, local government, various state politicians, service groups – basically with the aim of keeping that beautiful beachside hospital site in community hands.” Ms Duield said it was an “absolute privilege” to work at Werribee Mercy as a senior clinician in the Health Independence program. “his service provides the most innovative and efective health outcomes for the people of Wyndham and surrounds,” she said. “And I’m very proud to work here.” She said the Queen’s Birthday honour was “a tribute to all the people I’ve worked with”.

Amazing Grace You could call her ‘Amazing Grace’. Altona Meadows’ Grazia ‘Grace’ Gammaldi on Monday received an OAM for service to the community, including volunteering as part of the Laverton Catholic Parish and giving more than 110 blood and plasma donations. Mrs Gammaldi, 72, started donating blood in 1993. She also started donating plasma in 2016, because “you can give it more regularly”. “One time, I started giving out every couple of weeks and then because you get a lot of build-up … I had to reduce that to every four weeks,” Mrs Gammaldi said. She does the cleaning and helps wherever needed at Queen of Peace church in Altona Meadows, which is just starting to ofer small masses by appointment ater coronavirus. Mrs Gammaldi has been a committee member of the Melbourne Passion Play – cancelled this year – for 22 years.
She volunteers with Joseph’s Corner, which operates free drug and alcohol counselling centres at Yarraville, Hoppers Crossing and Laverton, and Merrijig op shop in Yarraville. “hey’ve struck hard times, too,” Mrs Gammaldi said of the store she donates to and volunteers in. “You can’t have any fundraising now – Joseph’s Corner used to do a lot of fundraising to maintain that. “he goods were donated but you’ve always got the rent and things like that.” On learning of her Queen’s Birthday honour, Mrs Gammaldi said she was “shocked and, dare I say, a little bit embarrassed”. “I enjoy doing it but to me it’s just part of my life,” she said. “I think I’m privileged to be able to do the things that I do.” Goya Dmytryshchak

A woman has died after the car she was driving veered off a cliff on the Great Ocean Road near Lorne about 1.20pm on Wednesday. Victorian SES crews assisted police with a high-angle rescue attempt shortly after the crash. A 59-year-old Altona woman, the only occupant of the car, was deceased when they recovered her body, a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

Face-to-face maternal and child health consultations in Hobsons Bay resumed yesterday as the municipality comes to life ater COVID-19 lockdown. In-person consults are available for those with babies up to eight weeks old, while most other appointments are continuing via virtual means or over the phone. New parents groups also recommenced, with social distancing in place and a maximum of 10 participants (each with their infant). Hobsons Bay mayor Colleen Gates said the maternal and child health check-ups were a vital service for the community. “Like many council services, we needed to adapt appointments during the pandemic to continue to support families,” she said.
“New parent groups build a sense of connectedness and community spirit. For some, being a irst-time parent can be a lonely and daunting experience, let alone during a global pandemic … while our online meetings were well received and enabled new parents to share stories and bond as a group, we are very happy to recommence the new parents groups in person.” New parents will be contacted by a nurse when their child is about six to eight weeks old with an invitation to join. Maternal and child health appointments can be made by calling 9932 1300 from Monday to Friday between 9am and 3pm.

By Benjamin Millar Jerril Rechter’s tireless passion for helping shape our future leaders has been recognised with the Kingsville resident being made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Queen’s Birthday 2020 Honours List. Ms Rechter, Basketball Australia’s chief executive and a Western Bulldogs director, was recognised for her “signiicant service to community health, to sports administration, and to the arts”. She said said the honour came as a complete surprise. “I absolutely think that serving the community is an honour and it’s something I’ve had all my life,” she said. Ms Rechter’s career has involved stints at the helm of arts, health and sports organisations. Prior to her role at Basketball Australia, she held senior leadership positions at VicHealth, Leadership Victoria, Footscray Community Arts Centre and the Melbourne International Festival of the Arts, and founded the Stompin Youth Dance Co. “I’m really drawn to organisations that have a vision for an improved society and engender that each and every day,” she said. “hat is just part of who I am. All through my life growing up I was involved in arts and sports and organisations that gave back to the community.” Ms Rechter’s focus remains on guiding young people towards their full potential, potential in terms of their leadership goals. “I’m drawn to supporting the next generation, I always have been. I do a lot of mentoring work with young emerging leaders, some of it formal and some not,” she said. “I see it is a two-way exchange – I really believe in this notion of distributed leadership, it’s a privilege

for me to be able to learn from young people.” Ms Rechter also credits living in the western suburbs with keeping her sense of community spirit burning. “he irst thing I felt when I came here was
that sense of community. I’m really drawn to it and I can’t imagine living anywhere else,” she said. “It’s a fabulous place to live, I just love the grittiness of the west and that it’s proud to be who it is.”
Footscray Primary School has blamed “recruitment challenges” for diiculties in delivering its Vietnamese bilingual program, but vowed to continue ofering the language as a stand-alone subject. Star Weekly last week reported Vietnamese community concerns that the long-running immersive language program was under threat and that there had been a lack of consultation over its future. he program irst faced the axe at the end of 2016, but continued ater the school received an extra $150,000 in 2017 and 2018 to be used to employ qualiied bilingual teachers. Footscray Primary School principal Jen Briggs said the school knows that language and culture are an important part of schools and communities. “Despite its best eforts, over many years the school has experienced ongoing recruitment challenges to deliver its Vietnamese bilingual program and is unable to continue delivering it to the standards required,” she said. “We are committed to providing a bilingual program and community consultation is currently underway – importantly, Vietnamese will continue to be ofered, as a LOTE subject to students.” Melbourne University Graduate School of Education is currently reviewing the issues faced by Footscray Primary School in implementing the program. ***A previous article on this issue incorrectly stated DET had been contacted for comment. Victoria’s state of emergency has been extended to May 11 to help continue to contain the spread of COVID-19. At Altona North, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal and partners run the Blackshaws Road pop-up clinic which was assembled from portables and tents over 10 days. Dr Haikerwal said the respiratory clinic enabled treatment of multiple patients with breathing conditions, including COVID-19, who were unable to be seen in a normal GP practice. Tests can be conducted without a change of personal protective gowns and masks, or shutting down and deep cleaning rooms between patients. he clinic had been the irst in Victoria to start swabbing people for coronavirus in the carpark until it ran out of gear. “here were no masks and then there were no gowns and then there were no swabs, so we had to do something diferent,” Dr Haikerwal said. “What we are doing now is … 50 or 60 tests

Lockdown takes its toll on club By Goya Dmytryshchak It’s “more than the sport”. As grassroots sporting clubs last week became eligible to apply for state government funding, Williamstown Women’s Lacrosse Club spoke of the toll of lockdown but also of hope as it returns to training. About 12,000 clubs and associations across Victoria will be able to apply for support under a $40 million program to help with basic running costs as they return to play. he $40 million community club and association program provides grants ranging
from $1000 to $350,000. Lacrosse Club vice president Lynne Pike said the lockdown had greatly afected the club’s players and extended families. “It’s a lot more than just not being able to play the sport,” she said. “It’s the efect on the families, and with community development as well, just getting people from all teams getting together and knowing each other. “It’s had a big impact on our club, let alone women being able to get out and participate in organised sport. “Not having that club environment to encourage people to come down to train has
made it quite diicult for everybody.” Ms Pike said the club was keen to return to play but running costs would increase. “From our club point of view, it’s been a lot of extra work trying to organise the players into groups so they can train in the allocated space that they’re allowed, and itting in with all the guidelines as well,” she said. “here’s a whole lot of extra cleaning that we have to do and sanitising of all the equipment and making sure people sanitise hands when people arrive and leave. “hen we’ve got to have designated areas so people are maintaining their distance.”

Laundry lightens the load When the COVID-19 curve was heading into dangerous territory, Altona’s Ilch Mickovski knew what he had to do. With frontline health workers scrambling to prepare for a pandemic that could potentially overload the nation’s hospitals Mr Mickovski put the word out that the workers could drop all their washing in at his Eco Laundry Room and have it washed, dried and returned within the hour, all while abiding by strict social distancing requirements. “We have special technology which means we can start washers and dryers remotely,” he said. “We’ve had nurses and doctors turn up at all diferent times of the day and we’ve been able to wash their clothes at a super fast pace. “In less than an hour we can wash and dry all their wash for a week, so they can go home and spend some quality time with their families.” Mr Mickovski’s laundry serves a broad

cross-section of the community, so he has been hearing a lot of stories about how people are faring under strict lockdown regulations. He said the longer the lockdown went on, the tougher people were inding things. “It’s a tough environment being locked up in home, Australia has never really gone through this and no-one really understands it,” he said. “As time goes on you see the frustration is really building.” Mr Mickovski said the decision by Services Australia to close its Newport Centrelink oice – its only Hobsons Bay presence – has added to the stress and impact on the area’s most vulnerable. Like a scorpion, the sting of the latest Kia sports sedan is in the tail, where 272 kW and 510 Nm are delivered to the road, and hence to the rear wheels of the Stinger 330S. Mated with Kia’s own-design eight-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels via a mechanical limited-slip diferential, the latter gives the car its high-performance pedigree with a claimed sprint from zero to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds, using launch control, and a top speed of 270 km/h. his has led to its uptake by police around Australia – from Queensland to Western Australia and the Northern Territory – as an operational Intercept and Road Command vehicle.
