Welcome back By Benjamin Millar Eating out is returning to the inner-west as pubs, cafes and restaurants begin to throw open their doors for business. For the irst time since being ordered to close in late March in response to a skyrocketing COVID-19 infection rate, hospitality venues are slowly welcoming customers back to their favourite local eateries and watering holes. Strict social distancing rules remain in place, including requirements for tables to be set apart, a limit of 20 people per enclosed space and contact details from all diners being kept. Spotswood Hotel was one of the irst venues to reopen, welcoming people back on Monday. Publican Cristian Barrera said it was a relief to inally be out of lockdown, however there could still be a rocky road ahead for hospitality venues. “We really didn’t know how long this was going to last, everyone feared the worst,” he said. “But we had a lot of great community support – Spotswood is a great little community, as is all Hobsons Bay and the surrounding suburbs.” He said ofering takeaway and delivery during the shutdown helped the pub to keep treading water. Mr Barrera said the social distancing restrictions would make it diicult for many smaller venues to make ends meet, but the Spotswood Hotel is well set up to keep people spread apart. Footscray’s Plough Hotel will reopen its doors to customers on Wednesday. Manager Ben Foster said takeaway meals and JobKeeper payments helped keep the popular venue from collapsing. he venue was far from idle during the shutdown, swinging into action to help keep frontline health workers fed. Mr Foster said community donations helped the Plough to deliver more than 2000 meals to Western Health workers as they swung into action to ensure local hospitals were prepared for a potentially devastating pandemic. “We knew the healthcare workers were very stressed getting ready and we thought it was a really worthy charitable thing to help them and feed them,” he said. “he irst week we did about 100 meals and it ballooned from that. I was quite emotional seeing how grateful the workers were.”

Mr Foster said the focus is now on rebuilding the business and helping it to survive when JobKeeper payments dry up. “he margins were tight going into this crisis, I know there’s going to be a lot people struggling to come out of this,” he said. “I can’t wait to get back to serving customers.

I hope it’s not too weird for people and they keep coming, we are going to need that continued support for six months or a year.” Hobsons Bay mayor Colleen Gates welcomed the reopening of hospitality venues and beauty salons. “Our diverse hospitality, creative and retail

industries bring vibrancy to Hobsons Bay and have been signiicantly impacted by the pandemic,” she said. “Shopping and supporting local business is the best way to help build our local economy.” ■ Lockdown

Support packages totalling $4.1 million have been developed to support residents and businesses facing financial hardship. A rate increase of 2 per cent has been incorporated into the budget for 2020-21 – funds that will be quarantined as a rate rebate and every last dollar spent on assisting those who need it the most.

A robust capital program valued over $52 million has been committed to respond to the needs of our rapidly growing community – for infrastructure, parks, open space, roads, paths, recreation facilities, and maintenance works. These works will also play an important role as we look to a post COVID-19 recovery by stimulating our local economy and creating jobs.This year there are a series of additional channels being used to seek community feedback. Council will host a live streamed Question and Answer (Q+A) session on the proposed Budget 2020-21 via a moderated webinar on 3 June. In addition, we will be answering questions submitted online from 4 – 11 June. Key stakeholder groups will be engaged virtually and online, and core areas of the budget will be issued for community discussion through a ‘budget bites’ program. Calls mount to reopen Centrelink By Benjamin Millar Pressure is mounting on the federal government to reopen Hobsons Bay’s only Centrelink oice in the wake of the dramatic impact of the COVID-19 crisis. Services Australia closed its Newport Centrelink oice without warning just before Christmas last year, citing a fall in demand for face-to-face services. But a sharp rise in the number of people let jobless and needing to use Services Australia in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic in

April prompted Hobsons Bay council oicers to investigate the possibility of a temporary Centrelink oice to meet the increased demand. he council was knocked back, however, with Services Australia asking it to direct people to access online services or attend service centres such as Footscray, Sunshine and Newmarket. Mayor Colleen Gates said the council is continuing to urge the federal government to reverse its decision to close the Newport Centrelink oice late last year. “his came as a shock to us and was implemented with extremely short notice to

council and our residents,” she said. “he decision to close was made long before the coronavirus pandemic, however the pandemic certainly ampliies that our community needs local support from all tiers of government, now more than ever.” Gellibrand MP Tim Watts said the Newport Centrelink closure was part of a nationwide strategy by a government so “desperate to return to surplus” it forgot its responsibilities. “It wasn’t appropriate then, and it’s certainly not appropriate now when the country is experiencing growing unemployment and

Small steps to reopening Inner-west beaches, playgrounds and outdoor play equipment have reopened as local councils begin cautiously reinstating services to the public. Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay councils began steadily reopening playgrounds last week ater the state government announced that COVID-19 restrictions on these areas were being wound back. Maribyrnong mayor Sarah Carter said the area’s 65 playgrounds will have a dedicated team of staf cleaning equipment on a rotational basis. “We are delighted to be reopening the playgrounds and outdoor exercise equipment,” she said.“We know our parks and playgrounds are well-loved and will continue to be enjoyed by the community. Please ensure you stay safe and be mindful of washing hands.” Hobsons Bay’s 83 playgrounds, including four skate parks and ive outdoor itness stations, have similar cleaning crews operating. Mayor Colleen Gates said the playgrounds are an important community space for local children to stay active. “Similarly, our skate parks, beaches and outdoor exercise stations play an important role in helping people stay mentally and physically well.” While Maribyrnong council continues to inalise plans to reopen libraries, community centres and the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre, Hobsons Bay has locked in details of reopening dates for a number of services. Customer service at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre in Altona has reopened, operating from 11am to 2pm weekdays. A dedicated ‘community hour’ for the elderly, their carers and those that are considered vulnerable or requiring additional assistance will be in place from 10-11am. Hobsons Bay Libraries will open to the public from Tuesday, June 9.

Laverton Community Hub, Newport Community Hub, and Seabrook Community Centre will reopen from June 9 for booked groups only. Face-to-face maternal child health consultations, new parent groups and youth counselling sessions will also resume June 9.

“Our team is looking forward to welcoming people back to our centres,” Cr Gates said. Maribyrnong council chief executive Stephen Wall said the council was still working through a transition plan to progressively reopen facilities. “he health and safety of staf and the community is paramount and we are taking appropriate measures to ensure hygiene, social distancing, and capacity limits,” he said.

But as coronavirus related restrictions across Victoria ease and a number of businesses begin to slowly open their doors ater weeks of forced closure, health authorities are warning people to avoid complacency and maintain strict social distancing. he total number of coronavirus cases in Victoria had reached 1653 on Monday, with 19 deaths. Six people remain in hospital but only one patient is in intensive care. More than 400,000 tests have now been processed. he Cedar Meats outbreak in Brooklyn remains the state’s worst cluster with 111 cases made up of 67 staf and 44 external people, however no new cases linked with the abattoir have been detected for almost a fortnight. However the economic impact on the area’s most vulnerable continues to bite. he Footscray-based Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) has seen up to a three-fold increase in demand for food, health and employment services in the COVID-19 crisis, due to asylum seekers being excluded from JobKeeper, JobSeeker and Medicare. Hobsons Bay council is encouraging local clubs, community groups and organisations afected by COVID-19 to apply for the 2021 Hobsons Bay Community Grants Program. he Hoppers Club has donated $2000 to a charity which provides backpacks to children in foster care and kinship care. he Hoppers Club, which is based in Hoppers Crossing, was recognised for donating the funds to Backpacks 4 VIC Kids last week. he donation helped the charity to purchase about 50 backpacks, which are illed with items such as toiletries, clothing, sleepwear, a torch, blanket and a toy or activity, for children who are placed into foster care or the care of their wider family. Hoppers Club members and representatives from Backpacks 4 VIC Kids last week presented the backpacks to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in Footscray. Backpacks 4 VIC Kids was based at the home

of its founder, chief executive and secretary, Sally Beard, until June 2016, when it moved to a commercial premises in Cranbourne. During the past ive years, the charity has provided 6500 backpacks and nappy-bags valued at more than $2 million to youngsters in need. he packs must be requested in writing by workers in the sector, such as foster care agencies, DHHS employees or Victoria Police. Backpacks 4 VIC Kids, which is mainly run by volunteers, relies on donations sought through fundraising, grants and sponsorship. Thousands unclaimed housands of inner-west residents have millions of dollars in unclaimed wages, rental bonds, interest and share dividends languishing unclaimed in state cofers. State Revenue Oice data released last week shows there are more than a million unclaimed entitlements across Victoria valued at hundreds of millions of dollars. Amounts range from as little as $20 up to a staggering $994,994 owed to a Mulgrave woman. he unclaimed money is made up of unclaimed salaries and wages, rents and bonds, share dividends, debentures and interest, along with proceeds from sales that have not been collected. he money is held by the SRO ater 12 months of not being claimed. he SRO returned $16.6 million to its rightful owners last year through more than 18,000 entitlements. SRO data shows the entitlements are spread right across Melbourne and Victoria, including $433,888 in Footscray. Victorian treasurer Tim Pallas said this is money that is just waiting for be collected by its rightful owners. “We encourage all Victorians, businesses and community groups to do a search – you may be pleasantly surprised,” he said. “You will know within seconds if you’re sitting on an unexpected windfall.” Entitlements can be searched via sro. vic.gov.au/unclaimedmoney

A greening blitz is underway in Maribyrnong with contractors working to plant 3000 new trees over winter. Maribyrnong council launched a 10-year street tree strategy in 2012, vowing to plant more than 11,000 new street trees in Maribyrnong by 2023. he council last month entered a $2.4 million contract for the inal 6000 trees to be planted over the next three years and maintained for a further two years. A combination of native and exotic, the new trees are being spread across residential streets, shopping strips, parks and reserves Maribyrnong-wide. Maribyrnong mayor Sarah Carter said street trees contribute to community health, have a range of environmental beneits and add character to neighbourhoods. “he program is an incredible example of our commitment to ensuring our community has access to urban spaces that are green, sustainable and positively contribute to wellbeing,” Cr Carter said. She said the trees help lower summer temperatures, reduce storm water run-of, capture airborne pollutants and provide habitat for local wildlife. Braybrook resident Awse Abdul said it was great to see the new trees helping to green up the neighbourhood. “Planting trees in our environment is like creating a new life as a single tree can be home to hundreds of insects and plants, like fungi and moss,” she said. “Humans have a deep need for trees and having the ability to get outside in the fresh air and be around these new trees is great.”

Victoria’s state of emergency has been extended to May 11 to help continue to contain the spread of COVID-19. At Altona North, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal and partners run the Blackshaws Road pop-up clinic which was assembled from portables and tents over 10 days. Dr Haikerwal said the respiratory clinic enabled treatment of multiple patients with breathing conditions, including COVID-19, who were unable to be seen in a normal GP practice. Tests can be conducted without a change of personal protective gowns and masks, or shutting down and deep cleaning rooms between patients. he clinic had been the irst in Victoria to start swabbing people for coronavirus in the carpark until it ran out of gear. “here were no masks and then there were no gowns and then there were no swabs, so we had to do something diferent,” Dr Haikerwal said. “What we are doing now is … 50 or 60 tests

Muzzle call after dog attack By Alesha Capone A dog owner whose golden retriever was attacked by another dog in Truganina last month says she wants to raise awareness of the importance of obedience training. Cham Kumara was walking her dog, six-year-old Savannah, on a leash near Westmeadows Lane and Stable Drive when the attack occurred about 1.20pm to 1.30pm on May 20. Ms Kumara said she saw a girl, who looked about 16 to 18 years old, walking a “very muscly and powerful” dark-and-white-coloured dog.

he dog, which was on a chain, broke loose from the girl and ran towards Savannah, before latching onto her neck. he girl grabbed the dark-coloured dog and dragged it of Savannah, but it broke free and attacked again. Ms Kumara said she was so shaken up that she did not think to take a photo of the girl, or get her details. Ms Kumara said luckily, on the day of the attack, Savannah was wearing a doggy pufer-jacket, which helped to shield her from the other dog’s attack. However, Savannah still sufered a deep puncture wound to her neck.

Ms Kumara said she reported the attack to Wyndham council, because she was worried what could have happened if a smaller dog or child had been the victim. Ms Kumara said the owners of the attacking dog needed to be educated about safe pet ownership. “hey need to take the dog to an obedience school and put a muzzle on the dog in public,” she said. Wyndham council’s city operations director Stephen horpe said council was investigating the incident and searching for the ofending dog and its owner.

Hobsons Bay’s creative side will be on show when the irst projects of the council’s Art Apart program get underway this month. Launched in response to the heavy hit on the arts inlicted by the COVID-19 crisis, the Art Apart program encourages creative practitioners to engage the community via a mix of digital, virtual or socially-distant artworks. Hobson Bay council has allocated $30,000 to fund the program, with up to $5000 available per project. he irst three successful applicants, announced last week, will deliver street theatre performances, shop front gallery projections and an online musical arts showcase. Born in a Taxi: Meet You Out he Front will bring street theatre to residential streets in Altona North and Brooklyn, featuring illuminated angels, bandicoots, zebras and spontaneous art. Winter Windows will project children’s and community art onto the front windows of Woods Street Arts Space in Laverton and he Long Space Gallery on Melbourne Road in Newport, in partnership with local children’s arts collective Little Art Big Art. Art Speak will involve Altona composer and producer Martin Case conducting online interviews and recordings of Hobsons Bay musicians across diverse music genres and cultures. Hobsons Bay will also host a series of online arts events this month including the annual Williamstown Literary Festival and Newport Folk Festival. Hobsons Bay mayor Colleen Gates said further details will be available on the council’s website. “Street theatre, shadow puppets on local window fronts and music make a wonderful, eclectic mix of performance and art from our irst batch of grant recipients and will provide fantastic opportunities for our community to get involved, especially in current times,” she said. Yvonne Moon’s devotion to ovarian cancer research continues to inspire others, even ater her death. he family of the staunch fundraiser, who died in March at the age of 71, is determined to honour her legacy and complete one of her greatest missions building a cancer wellness centre in the western suburbs. With her husband Fred, Ms Moon founded a charitable trust called RoCan (Rotary Against Ovarian Cancer) in 2003. Ms Moon spoke at clubs, community groups and events to raise funds for RoCan, and organised dinners, fashion parades and annual bike rides, helping to raise about $1 million. Ms Moon received an Order of Australia medal in 2007 for her service to the community. Ms Moon’s daugher, Leanne Wills, said that about three years ago, her mother realised there was a need for a Cancer Wellness Centre in the west. RoCan began raising funds to establish the centre, and in 2018 purchased land in Werribee for a future build. Since her mother’s death supporters and Rotary clubs across the state have continued fundraising for the project. A musical CD created in Ms Moon’s memory, with vocals by western suburbs artist Arthur Gee, has been produced to raise funds for the centre “Mum was such an inspiration. She was funny and cheeky, loving, strong, brave and determined,” Ms Wills said. Ms Moon was the irst female president of the Rotary Club of Williamstown. Fight to save Vietnamese bilingual program he future of Victoria’s only Vietnamese bilingual school program is under threat, triggering calls for the state government to protect the long-running initiative. Footscray Primary School’s language-immersion stream is one of only a dozen in the state and the only program of its type in the western suburbs. It irst faced the axe in 2016 but was saved by a passionate campaign which forced an intervention from Education Minister James Merlino. he program again hit troubled waters in 2018 and now faces being scrapped entirely.

Vietnamese Community in Australia chapter president Bon Nguyen said the decision to scrap the program is a blow to the Vietnamese and wider community. “In 2016 they were going to cut the Vietnamese bilingual program with minimal consultation with the Vietnamese community, who have a dense population in Footscray,” he said. “hey recognised at the time there was a lack of communication with the Vietnamese community yet over the past three years that has been very minimal.” Mr Nguyen has been told the school has had diiculty attracting and retaining suitable

teachers, but he said a high turnover of teaching staf indicated broader issues and dysfunction at the school. “If you have a problem you need to have a look at the overall situation, not just cut something that is valued by people who are not able to voice themselves,” he said. “We are very upset about it. It is not giving the community a fair go and not listening to the community – if you value us why are you slapping us in the face?” he Education Department was contacted for comment. Early learning centre approved By Benjamin Millar A new early learning centre will be built in Hyde Street in Footscray ater Maribyrnong council agreed to commit about $4 million towards the project. Councillors have given their in-principle agreement to building the proposed Integrated Early Learning Centre (IELC) on council land alongside Footscray City Primary School, as part of the Footscray Learning Precinct. he state government announced in 2018 it would put $3.3m towards the centre, which will

include long-day childcare, kindergarten and maternal and child health programs. Design work will soon begin on the centre, which will be built on a site between the existing school and the Bluestone Church Arts Space, also taking in part of the council carpark to the west of the church. he existing kindergarten and band hall, both vacant, would be demolished. A council report on the project noted there is a “signiicant gap” in the provision of both sessional kindergarten and long-day childcare in the area.

Bridges demolished Shuttle buses will help ferry pedestrians between one side of the West Gate Freeway and the other ater two key pedestrian bridges passing over the freeway were demolished. West Gate Tunnel Project crews demolished both bridges last weekend as part of West Gate Freeway widening works, with replacement bridges due to be installed later this year. A free shuttle bus will run between South Kingsville, Yarraville, Brooklyn and Altona North in the interim, running to a timetable between 7am and 10pm. Cyclists and pedestrians will also be able to detour via a new footpath beneath the freeway between he Avenue and Fogarty Avenue. Pedestrian counts show about 145 people used the Muir Street footbridge each day and a further 30 people crossed the pedestrian bridge at Rosala Avenue. he bridges are being rebuilt to make way for four extra lanes on the West Gate Freeway as

part of the delayed West Gate Tunnel Project, now due for completion in 2023. West Gate Tunnel Project chief executive Peter Sammut said fewer people using the roads and pedestrian bridges during the CIVID-19 crisis makes this the best time to remove the existing bridges. “We acknowledge the disruption to the community during the time the bridges are removed, and we’ll keep people moving while the new, easily accessible and safer bridges are installed,” he said. he new bridges will include lighting, CCTV and higher barriers. Mum’s journey inspires By Alesha Capone Victoria University graduate Rochelle Smith says she was inspired to become a paramedic ater learning about her mother’s battle with chronic diseases. Ms Smith, 22, said that while growing up, she heard stories about how her mother, Belinda, had sufered from severe asthma, emphysema, arthritis and osteoporosis. “My mum has never needed an ambulance since she had me, however the efort and care my mum received during her childhood years, from paramedics and other hospital staf, is incredible. Without them, my mum wouldn’t be here and neither would I,” Ms Smith said. “Today, she still lives with disease and struggles daily, however now that I’m a paramedic I feel a little more at ease, where previously it was a scary time.” Ms Smith and her mother both live in Manor Lakes. Ms Smith is based at Ambulance Victoria’s Bacchus Marsh station. “I am one of the 120 new graduates recruited during the coronavirus pandemic to help bolster health services across the state,” Ms Smith said. “I graduated from Victoria University last year … and I am currently undertaking Ambulance Victoria’s induction program so that I am ready to hit the road at the start of June. “I think that what I’ll enjoy most about the job is paying it forward, helping people in what may be their darkest day. “he job is special, we are invited into people’s homes … their safe and personal space, the trust the community gives us when they are vulnerable. I just hope that I can give people a little positivity, in these moments, that they will never forget.”

Ms Smith said that Ambulance Victoria had provided additional training for paramedics to help them deal with the coronavirus, and high-grade personal protective equipment including suits, masks, gloves and eyewear. “It has changed the way we respond to patients with certain procedures being completed diferently, to protect the patient and ourselves while delivering the best patient care,” Ms Smith said. “My take-home message during

this coronavirus pandemic is to not be afraid of calling triple-0 for emergencies. If you’re sick, we are here for you and want to support you in every way we can.” Ms Smith said being a paramedic was a rewarding employment opportunity, and urged other young people to consider it as a career. “We can all somehow it into this wonderful job, young or old, and contribute to the community, which is what I love,” she said.

Mayor backs election call Maribyrnong mayor Sarah Carter has welcomed the decision for October’s local government elections to proceed despite criticisms by the peak body representing local governments in Victoria. Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek recently announced that the COVID-19 crisis would not stop the 2020 local government elections proceeding as planned. Cr Carter said the decision gives potential candidates and communities certainty, with a postal vote lowering the risk of community transmission of the coronavirus. “October is still a long way out, I’m really comfortable with the timeline,” she said. “An extension wouldn’t have been warranted given we are seemingly getting ahead of this curve.” he Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) had earlier written to the minister seeking a 12-month delay. MAV president Cr Coral Ross said councils were most concerned about the health and safety risks, as well as the potential for incumbent councillors to be unfairly advantaged in their campaigns. Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) electoral commissioner Warwick Gately said the VEC will implement advice issued by the Chief Health Oicer of Victoria to ensure the elections are conducted with minimal risk to health and safety. From little things, big things grow By Tate Papworth he inner-west boasts a colourful history, much of which can be seen on the many quirky old buildings that have stood the test of time. But as the area evolves, those buildings are becoming fewer in number. Luckily, a Yarraville artist is on a mission to preserve as many as he can by creating miniature versions of them. David Hourigan has been re-creating the landmarks in his workshop on a full-time basis for 18 months and said the spark came to him randomly. “I used to build model kits as a kid, then one day I thought … why building a model spitire when I’ve never lown one,” he said. “So I want to make things that have relevance to me. “It started of when I’d walk around my streets and come across a cool building.” From there, Hourigan set to work. “I start to take a lot of pictures of the building, I do lots of sketches and measure it all up,” he said. “hen I come back to the studio and scale it to a size that works for me.” he buildings recreated by Hourigan are by no means grand. he Yarraville Racing Pigeon Club, the Switch House in Station Road in Seddon and the Olympic Doughnuts van that was at Footscray station had all seen better days, but that’s what makes them interesting to Hourigan . “Most of my work is small, insigniicant, decrepit buildings … I’m trying to capture them before they’re all gone,” he said. “It’s important to remember where we come from.” he process takes three to ive weeks and Hourigan builds every component from scratch with painstaking detail. “he pieces that take a lot of time are the things you don’t look at, like a water meter or

an NBN box bolted to a wall. “Details make it come alive – rusty pipes and bits and pieces give it personality and stop it being a boring chunk of wall.” Hourigan recently held an exhibition where he sold a number of pieces, leaving him a little overwhelmed. “he reaction to my work has been incredible. … I guess nostalgia is part of it, but there’s also a sense of wanting to capture all this before it goes,” he said. “I had 10 pieces at the exhibition in March and it was good to sell a few of them … I thought it would be incredibly diicult to part with them, but I’m running out of room in my workshop.” With his work gaining popularity, Hourigan said he’s been inundated with suggestions for his next piece. “here’s a massive list of possibilities and the list honestly keeps growing. “I get lots of suggestions and I’ve got a few things in mind so we’ll have to wait and see.” For more information visit the Instagram handle @davidhouriganartist.

Steps toward a ‘new normal’ Star Weekly reporter Esther Lauaki has returned home to New Zealand where the country has begun liting COVID-19 restrictions in alert level two. As Victoria moves to relax its rules this week, here is what people can expect. Play it safe. his is how New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern proposes the country take its irst steps out of this global pandemic. When New Zealand and Australia called a COVID-19 state of emergency in March, the Kiwis took the hard line early, imposing a full lockdown for ive weeks. Stay home, save lives was the message. he only reason to leave your “bubble”, describing each household and those in it, was to visit the doctors, pharmacies, supermarkets or to work in essential services. Stringent social distancing and hygiene rules are enforced by the police, army and navy. Ms Ardern’s tough, composed, calculated and compassionate approach to the crisis drew widespread attention across the globe. Australia took a similar approach to its Trans-Tasman cousins and life, in both countries, looks very diferent these days. On May 15, New Zealand began relaxing its strict rules around public gatherings, re-opening businesses and allowing more social interaction. But border restrictions and mandatory 14-day quarantine for returned travellers from most countries are here to stay. Last Friday, New Zealand had no new cases of COVID-19 – the sixth day in a row. At the time there were only eight active cases. here had been 22 deaths related to the virus and the last community transmission was in early April.

Ms Ardern said Kiwis face at least four more weeks of physical distancing obligations and limits on social gatherings at alert level two. She said that the low number of new cases meant that, instead of increasing the limit on gatherings in stages as Australia is doing, New Zealand could now jump to 100 people at weddings, funerals, churches, as well as private parties.

Both countries are also considering a Trans-Tasman bubble to be operational by September. Ms Ardern said in conversations with her Australian counterpart Scott Morrison there was “enthusiasm from both sides” for travel to resume. “We are working to move on this as quickly as we can,” Ms Ardern last week said of the

move. “We are both very keen on it … across both sides of the ditch. It won’t be too long before we are ready.” Rules will be reviewed on June 8 – but Cabinet would not consider whether the country was ready to move to level one until June 22. Alert level one will have no restrictions on social gatherings, and no obligations – only an encouragement – for physical distancing.

As Victorians prepare for a gradual easing of lockdown restrictions, it would be a mistake to think our working lives will revert back to normal. he coronavirus pandemic has torn up the rulebook and accelerated changes that would have otherwise taken decades to achieve. Catie Norman, a workers’ compensation solicitor from Shine Lawyers in Sunshine, explains what employees should expect.

I tend to agree with the consultancy irm KPMG, which predicts working from home is here to stay. hat won’t be the reality for everyone but COVID-19 forced Australians to adjust to a new way of doing things and for many the beneits are obvious. Corporations will save money on oice space by only requiring skeleton crews to work on-site and the rise of automation will increasingly mean production in factories and warehouses can be managed remotely. his will enable many employees to continue working from home, sparing themselves the distractions of crowded workplaces and, of course, the hassle of the daily commute.
