Fall in love with colour It’s easy to be impressed by the images you see in magazines and on design sites – the challenge is knowing how to make them work in your own home. To address this common frustration, Dulux has partnered with interior stylist Julia Green to guide you step-by-step on how to give your rooms an ‘on trend’ makeover. “It’s easy to be wowed by professionally styled shots,” says Julia. “But the real trick is looking for the ideas behind the images and inding ways to make them work in your own home. If you’re looking to liven a room, are short on time and don’t want to spend a fortune, paint can be your best friend, allowing you to breathe new life into tired spaces with minimal cost and efort. “Add in the right sot furnishings or paint your existing accessories and you’ve got an up-to-date look in no time.” Faced with a bland, white bedroom, Julia took inspiration from Dulux’s Repair palette to give it some much-needed personality and interest. “he room was a blank canvas,” says Julia. “While it had lovely features such as wooden loorboards, white walls and shutters, it was crying out for some character. “When it comes to choosing colour, I believe it’s the emotional connection we make that is the most important thing – perhaps even more important than how we dress a space. and hints of cinnamon would be perfect for creating a warm, welcoming feel in this bedroom.” Julia looked for easy ways to incorporate the ideas into a tired bedroom with doses of colour in paint, accessories and sot furnishings. “I chose an artwork for the back wall that was illed with beautiful, earthy tones, all present in the Dulux Repair palette, and used this to inform the rest of my colour choices. I selected a bold hue for the back wall to give the room depth. I layered this up with touches of rich green by painting the existing bedside-table drawer with Dulux Aquanamel in Plasticine and adding lush velvet sot furnishings and tall potted plants on either side of the bed. “I’m a irm believer that every room’s scheme needs an element of surprise to really bring it to life – here, I painted a sot terracotta shade on the mirror rim and Auburn Flair on the base of a ceramic pot, which contrast beautifully with all the blues and greens. he ceiling, trims and other walls were already painted in a warm white.

JULIA’S STYLING TIPS When choosing colours, think about the mood you want to create. I chose greeny-blues and accents of cinnamon and terracotta here because I wanted to create a cosy, refreshing vibe. • Start with an artwork: Take your colour cues from a key painting or print to give your room scheme an intentional feel. • Add energy to the space with one or two jolts of an unexpected colour. And remember; contrast is key. • If you’re adding white to the mix, choose one with similar undertones as your brights. • Think beyond walls – use paint to revamp old furniture and accessories too. You may just ind yourself falling right back in love with them! • Have fun and experiment – remember, if you change your mind about a colour, you can always paint over it. To feel conident with your choice, always start with a sample pot or A4-size swatch so you can live with the colour for a few days without fully committing.

Lighting up the dark By Ewen McRae When Maddingley couple Bridie and Christopher Murphy noticed their son was unwell in May last year, they could not have imagined what the next 12 months would bring. Five-year-old Hunter is battling acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, meaning regular trips to the Royal Children’s Hospital and weeks of intensive treatment at a time. It’s more than any young child should have to endure. “It took about a month for us to get a diagnosis, because it presented as basically an infection at irst,” Ms Murphy said. “He wasn’t eating or drinking and wasn’t getting better, and eventually a GP sent him to get some blood tests. We got a call about 10 at night from the pathologist telling us to take him straight into the hospital … he was in intensive care for about ive days. “He had a blood transfusion and was on to chemo pretty quickly, and from there it’s been a long road. “It’s devastating. It’s hard to put into words, and it’s heartbreaking to see your child go through something like that. “He’s doing better now, back at school for the irst time in nearly a year, but sometimes a quick trip to the hospital would mean a two week stay.” While Hunter was receiving treatment in the hospital, a visit from the Starlight Children’s Foundation gave the family a chance to brighten his day. Hunter’s one wish was for a new puppy for the family – enter Rocky the dalmatian. “Hunter’s favourite movie is 101 Dalmatians, and we’ve probably watched it 100 times in hospital,” Ms Murphy said. “He’s [Rocky] been a great addition to the family, and it brightens his day to see Rocky when he comes home. “It’s that light at the end of the tunnel … it’s something to help in the tough times. “We’re really grateful to the Starlight Foundation for helping us. I think it’s a really special thing to help kids going through a tough time and bring some happiness and joy into their life.” he Starlight Foundation is running its annual appeal and hopes to raise $355,500 by June 30. Hotel plan approved for Truganina Melton council has approved a planning permit for a new hotel in Truganina, including space for 60 electronic gaming machines. A proposal for a four-storey residential hotel on Greigs Road and a single-storey hotel on Clara Avenue in Truganina came before council at last week’s meeting. he plans include space for 400 visitors, a gym and pool, meeting rooms, sports bar, bistro, and a gaming room. When complete, the hotels are expected to create 57 full-time jobs.

Council planning services manager Bob Baggio said Melton was well under its state government-imposed cap on electronic gaming machines, and the beneits of the venue should see it approved. “he City of Melton has a municipal cap of 824 gaming machines, and currently there are 523 machines across the existing venues in the municipality,” Mr Baggio said. “It is also noted that the venue will also provide a full range of hotel facilities and

services to patrons and is likely to be a real asset in the area.” A recent report from the Alliance for Gambling Reform stated that $10.5 million had been stopped from going to Melton electronic gaming since the enforced COVID-19 shutdown of venues. Councillor Sophie Ramsey raised concerns about the introduction of more pokie machines into the municipality. “We will always be under that cap on gaming

machines, because we are a growth corridor with more people moving here every day,” she said. “It’s the gaming losses that concern me, because they are quite signiicant when it is compared statewide, and that worries me.” he applicant said they would make $90,000 available each year in community contributions as part of their gaming license. he council unanimously supported the proposal. While lockdown restrictions across the state eased further this week, the threat of coronavirus remains. Moorabool had one new case of the virus as of Sunday, bringing the total number of cases in the region to three, while Melton has had 42 positive cases. However just one of those in Melton was postive as of Sunday. Victoria’s chief health oicer, professor Brett Sutton, said it was important to remain vigilant as movement restrictions eased. Restrictions have eased in a number of areas from this week, including increases in visitors to homes, the opening of pubs and restaurants (with capacity limits), overnight trips now allowed, and the re-opening of libraries and community centres. “While we have been lattening the curve, our battle against COVID-19 is far from over,” Professor Sutton said. “We have to continue to track, trace and act on infections in this pandemic. “We need to remain vigilant. It is increasingly important that we stay at home when unwell and get tested, wash our hands regularly, sneeze and cough into our elbow and maintain physical distancing. “hese are common sense actions to ensure we don’t create a second wave of this serious disease, as we have seen in other countries once they have eased their stringent regulations. “Similarly, if you can work from home, you should continue to do so until at least the end of June. “Now is not the time for complacency.”

A 31-year-old Pentland Hills man has been charged with murder following the death of a motorcyclist in Maddingley. The charges relate to an incident on Woolpack Road about 7.15pm on May 20 where a motorcyclist was struck by a ute. The male rider, a 24-year-old Werribee man, died at the scene. The male driver of the ute stopped a short time later and stayed at the scene with another passenger, while the Pentland Hills man allegedly left on foot. Detectives from the Homicide Squad and Major Collision Investigation Unit are investigating the incident. Concerts at home he loss of live music has hit hard for many people during the COVID-19 lockdown, but some residents have had the music come to them. As part of a new council initiative ‘Porch Performances’, some senior residents in Melton were treated to live music outside their homes. Local performers, he Hofmans, put on a 30-minute show for a group of senior residents at a group of council lats. It also proved a timely present for Mary, who was celebrating her 94th birthday. he initiative speciically targeted older and vulnerable residents who have limited or no access to the internet. Melton mayor Lara Carli said it was

important to put a smile on the faces of locals at this tough time, and the show was a huge success. “It was lovely to treat some of our music-loving seniors to these special performances,” Cr Carli said. “he live music brought so much joy to each and every one of these residents, and it was clear how much it meant to them at this challenging time. “For these residents, online concerts and movies are not an option, so to have this entertainment brought to them was really positive for their wellbeing and something I’m very proud council could deliver.”

The Victorian government is extending the deadline for the mandatory registration of private pools and spas due to the impacts of coronavirus. Private pool and spa owners now have until November 1 to register their pools with their local council – an extension of ive months from the original June 1 deadline. provided across the four levels, while 20 bicycle hoops would be provided, allowing for the parking of 32 bicycles. he building presently has 409 car parking spaces. While a council decision is yet to be formally made, Melton deputy mayor Steve Abboushi indicated approval was imminent via his Facebook page. “Council is pleased to advise that planning approval is soon to be granted for redevelopment of the CS Central Shopping Centre at 218 – 222 Caroline Springs Boulevard,” he said.

Consultant town planner Con Tsourounakis was equally as emphatic in his report to council. “he proposed redevelopment of the Central Shopping Centre into a new entertainment and lifestyle precinct will be enjoyed by the whole local community,” Mr Tsourounakis said. “he allocated spaces are all carefully designed to cater for the diversity of all age groups and cultural backgrounds that deine the whole Caroline Springs area and its residents and local community.”

Letters help make connections Bridging the generation gap in isolation can be a tricky exercise, but one western community is making it happen. Residents in the Woodlea estate in Rockbank have launched a senior pen pal program, encouraging children and residents of the community to engage with residents of local aged care and retirement facilities to alleviate loneliness and help people stay connected. Sutton Park Aged Care and Kalyna Care are two residences that have been in lockdown – or had strict guidelines for visitors – in order to keep vulnerable residents safe during COVID-19. Since initiating the pen pal program, residents across both facilities have signed up to

take part, as well as kindergarten students from Woodlea Early Education. Sutton Park lifestyle co-ordinator Deb Gunn said the new program is a great opportunity for residents to stay connected and will build relationships between all members within the local community. “With the new program, our residents will not only feel connected during these uncertain times but will also strengthen intergenerational relationships where younger members of the community will learn so much from the older generation,” Ms Gunn said. In order to support infection control measures, all handwritten letters and drawings are addressed to a zero-contact mailbox at the

Woodlea Sales Hub in Aintree, to be emailed, scanned and printed of by staf at the aged care facilities. A spokesperson from Woodlea Early Education said the program is a great supplement to in-person visits to facilities, which are not possible under current restrictions. “We strongly value teaching our children about community participation and demonstrating care and empathy towards others,” the spokesperson said. “his is a great opportunity for the children to think about another person’s perspective and how their actions can help make our world a better place.”

he Bacchus Marsh Target store will close next year, following a reevaluation of stores across the state by owner Wesfarmers. Up to 167 Target or Target Country stores will be closed or converted to Kmart. he Bacchus Marsh store is slated for closure in early to mid-2021. Wesfarmers managing director Rob Scott said the decision was made following a review in the Target side of the business, which showed it had an “unsustainable inancial performance”. “For some time now, the retail sector has seen signiicant structural change and disruption, and we expect this trend to continue,” Mr Scott said. “he actions announced relect our continued focus on investing in Kmart, a business with a compelling customer ofer and strong competitive advantages, while also improving the viability of Target by addressing some of its structural challenges by simplifying the business model. “he reduction in the Target store network will be complemented by increased investment in our digital capabilities. “he expansion of our digital ofer will provide customers with access to the Kmart and Target products they love via home delivery or click and collect.” Federal government frontbencher David Littleproud said the announcement of store closures was especially disappointing for regional areas, which would be hardest hit. “I think Australians should vote with their wallets and not go near them. hat’s the sort of reaction that all Australians should stand united.” Ewen McRae

Creek returns to nature By Ewen McRae he transformation of Arnold’s Creek in Melton West is almost complete, with a new waterway attraction set to welcome its irst visitors. he project – the irst of a number of ’Reimagining your Creek’ programs from Melbourne Water, has converted a 1.4 kilometre stretch of Arnold’s Creek from a concrete drain into a natural waterway. Paths and meeting places have also been constructed. he reimagined parkland extends from High Street to the Arthur Westlands Memorial Reserve at Bulmans Road and north to Cambrian Way, near the Wedge Park Primary School. Melbourne Water’s major projects manager Eamonn Kelly said the local community had been instrumental in the transformation of Arnold’s Creek. “his project has replaced an existing concrete-lined channel with a more natural waterway and surrounding open space,” Mr Kelly said. “It now incorporates contemporary urban design and a native vegetation landscape that was what the community told us they wanted for the area. “We would like to thank the community for their contribution during the design of the new public space and we’re conident that it is now an area everyone can be proud of and will use.” he next step in the project will be the planting of more than 200,000 native plants, further livening up the parkland. he project was a partnership between Melbourne Water, state government and Melton council. Melton mayor Lara Carli said the new park would be a strong addition to the region.

Sports grants help clubs return to play Community sporting clubs and associations can now make their pitch for a share of more than $100 million in state government grants dedicated to supporting grassroots players and volunteers. With a number of local teams and leagues back training and preparing for a return to play later in the year, clubs and associations can now apply for a share of $40 million in grants to to help with basic running costs and to support readiness to return to play. Community Sport Minister Ros Spence also conirmed that $68 million from the government’s building works stimulus package would be allocated to fast-track community sports infrastructure projects across Victoria. “Community sport plays such a vital role in the lives and wellbeing of so many Victorians, and that’s why we are getting behind our clubs,” Ms Spence said “his is making it that little bit easier to pay the bills as we start to train again and move cautiously towards a return to the park. We will back projects that have the support of their community, will create jobs and provide real beneits.” Applications for grants will be accepted until June 15, or until the funding allocation is exhausted. Man jailed for heroin chocolate By Ewen McRae A man who tried to import 3.5 kilograms of heroin, hidden in chocolate bars, to a Caroline Springs address has been sentenced to more than a decade behind bars. hanh Nguyen plead guilty in the County Court last month to attempted traicking of a commercial quantity of a drug of dependence, following his arrest in October 2018. he court heard that border force detected the heroin hidden in chocolate imported from

Malaysia, which was to be delivered to an address in Caroline Springs. Nguyen – who had been released from prison in South Australia just eight months prior following a similar traicking conviction – contacted Australia Post the day ater the package arrived in Australia to arrange delivery, however police swapped the heroin for an inert substance before organising a delivery time. he address in Caroline Springs was a vacant property that was for sale. he court heard

Nguyen arrived there prior to the agreed time and pretended to be cleaning the front yard when a police oicer disguised as a delivery man delivered the package. Ater accepting the package, Nguyen was arrested by police, who found $5000 cash, four mobile phones and two laptops in his possession. Nguyen initially made a no comment interview, but later plead guilty to attempted traicking. Judge Michael Tinney said the charge was an

ofence that merited a severe punishment, and sentenced Nguyen to 11 years prison. “his was planned serious ofending by a mature man with a highly relevant prior criminal history,” Judge Tinney said. “hose who are prepared to traick in drugs should expect little by way of leniency when brought before the courts. Happily, there are not too many who come back to a court at this level for their third such appearance. You have two prior convictions for traicking … you really have exhausted any claim for leniency.”

Hope centre nears inish By Ewen McRae More help for Melton youth experiencing hardship and homelessness is on the way, with a new refuge nearing completion. he Hope Street First Response Youth Service Centre is due to be completed in late-June and will provide short-term crisis accommodation and a mobile outreach service for young people (aged 16 – 25 years) and young families who are experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness. Hope Street chief executive Donna Bennett said it was an exciting and much-needed addition to homelessness services in the region.

Paying respect to traditional owners Caroline Springs’ CS Square will begin each day of trading a little diferently. Coinciding with National Reconciliation Week (NRW), the centre will start opening each day of trade with an acknowledgement to country to the traditional custodians of the Melton region, the Kulin Nation. CS Square centre manager Rod Kennedy said the initiative would remain in place permanently. “CS Square has been part of the Melton community for more than 15 years, and it’s only right that we permanently pay our respects to the Kulin Nation who’ve cared for, and been custodians of, this land for many thousands of years,” Mr Kennedy said. “National Reconciliation Week is a timely reminder of the importance of continuing to stay connected with and standing alongside First Nations elders, leaders, businesses and communities.” he acknowledgement will be screened on the large digital screen located in the centre. What the eased restrictions mean for you As we welcome the gradual easing of restrictions across the state, it’s important to remember that there are still rules in place that must be strictly adhered to for everyone’s safety. The Victorian Government is allowing more types of activities and some gatherings. These changes have been introduced in response to community transmission remaining low, and a high rate of testing. Financial hardship support for eligible residents To ease the impact on those experiencing substantial hardship due to COVID-19, Council has introduced a new rate waiver of $200 for the fourth quarter 2019/20 rates instalment to eligible ratepayers.

Steps toward a ‘new normal’ Star Weekly reporter Esther Lauaki has returned home to New Zealand where the country has begun liting COVID-19 restrictions in alert level two. As Victoria moves to relax its rules this week, here is what people can expect. Play it safe. his is how New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern proposes the country take its irst steps out of this global pandemic. When New Zealand and Australia called a COVID-19 state of emergency in March, the Kiwis took the hard line early, imposing a full lockdown for ive weeks. Stay home, save lives was the message. he only reason to leave your “bubble”, describing each household and those in it, was to visit the doctors, pharmacies, supermarkets or to work in essential services. Stringent social distancing and hygiene rules are enforced by the police, army and navy. Ms Ardern’s tough, composed, calculated and compassionate approach to the crisis drew widespread attention across the globe. Australia took a similar approach to its Trans-Tasman cousins and life, in both countries, looks very diferent these days. On May 15, New Zealand began relaxing its strict rules around public gatherings, re-opening businesses and allowing more social interaction. But border restrictions and mandatory 14-day quarantine for returned travellers from most countries are here to stay. Last Friday, New Zealand had no new cases of COVID-19 – the sixth day in a row. Ms Ardern said Kiwis face at least four more weeks of physical distancing obligations and limits on social gatherings at alert level 2. She said that the low number of new cases meant that, instead of increasing the limit on gatherings in stages as Australia is doing, New Zealand could now jump to 100 people at weddings, funerals, churches, as well as private parties.

Both countries are also considering a Trans-Tasman bubble to be operational by September. Ms Ardern said in conversations with her Australian counterpart Scott Morrison there was “enthusiasm from both sides” for travel to resume. “We are working to move on this as quickly as we can,” Ms Ardern last week said of the

move. “We are both very keen on it … across both sides of the ditch. It won’t be too long before we are ready.” Rules will be reviewed on June 8 – but Cabinet would not consider whether the country was ready to move to level 1 until June 22. Alert level 1 will have no restrictions on social gatherings, and no obligations – only an encouragement – for physical distancing.
