Students back in class Adrian Mois never thought he’d be excited to be walking into school, but as he and his twin brother Benjamin walked through the gates of Caroline Chisholm Catholic College this morning, that was the overwhelming emotion. Since the beginning of term two, most children across the state have been learning remotely in a bid to slow the spread of COVID-19. But from today, all prep, grade one and grade two pupils, specialist school students, as well as VCE and VCAL students, will return to on-site learning at government schools. Students from year 3 to 10 will continue to learn remotely until June 9. Adrian said the prospect of returning to the classroom was something he’s been looking forward to. “It’s been eight weeks so it’ll be great to see everyone and talk to my friends.” Adrian said the transition to remote learning was a relatively smooth one. “It’s been different. It wasn’t bad going onto online classrooms, but everyone misses the physical classroom … the environment, the people, everything.” Tate Papworth

Brimbank’s building boom By Tate Papworth Planning and development is booming in Brimbank. In April, the council received 63 new planning permit applications with a development value of $65.9 million, double the $32.1 million in applications received in April last year. he council also made 96 planning determinations and 22 subdivision determinations in April, in the midst of a global pandemic. Cr Bruce Lancashire said it was a terriic outcome for Brimbank.
“It gives me great conidence for the future, in that a pipeline of work in Brimbank has doubled,” Cr Lancashire said. “his is an amazing result given the circumstances … I wonder how we compare to other local government areas?” However some councillors had concerns. Cr John Hedditch shared Cr Lancashire’s sentiment but said the volume of the building could cause problems. “For another month … the Harvester ward continues to have a really high number of planning applications going through the system,” Cr Hedditch said.
“he impact of that on a ward that doesn’t have a lot of parks, doesn’t have a lot of sporting facilities, doesn’t have a lot of general community infrastructure, is enormous and over time the cumulative efect of that creates great pressures from within. “I also ask councillors to think really deeply about the impacts of each of these diferent approvals going through and what it does to the livability and strains on those particular suburbs.” hree planning appeals were determined by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) in April.
One appeal, against a council decision to refuse a planning permit for the construction of eight triple-storey dwellings at 7 West Esplanade, St Albans, was partially successful. VCAT ordered that a planning permit be issued for the construction of seven triple-storey dwellings on the site. Two appeals against conditions on planning permits for the subdivision and development of land were withdrawn ater agreements were reached between the parties. At the end of April 2020, there were 19 appeals lodged at VCAT that had not been determined, one more than for the same time last year.

Restrictions ease as virus numbers drop By Tate Papworth While restrictions may have started to ease, there’s still ample reason for Brimbank residents to remain vigilant. On Sunday, Premier Daniel Andrews announced that as his government continued to wind back restrictions, the messaging has gone from “stay home” to “stay safe.” And there’s good reason for Brimbank residents to heed that advice with 12 active COVID-19 cases within the municipality, second only to the Melbourne CBD. It brings the total number of cases within
Brimbank to 63. he number of cases jumped dramatically ater the outbreak at Brooklyn-based abattoir Cedar Meats. here were no new outbreaks related to the facility at the weekend, but ive on Friday showed it’s still not contained. As of Sunday, the total number of cases in the outbreak was 111, made up of 67 staf and 44 people external to the facility. Mr Andrews said a number of restrictions would remain in place in the state until at least the end of June. “One of our most important messages to
Victorians is this: if you are working from home, you must keep working from home – at least until the end of June,” he said. “We just can’t aford to have millions of people moving around our state – taking public transport or using the communal kitchen.” From June 1, libraries, youth centres and other community facilities can open with no more than 20 people in a single area, plus those needed to operate the space. Swimming pools can also open with limits of 20 people and additional safety requirements. Community sporting activities will be permitted with up to 20 people in undivided
spaces, provided the sport is outdoors, non-competition, non-contact, and people are able to play 1.5 metres apart. Weddings will be allowed 20 guests, plus the celebrant and couple – and up to 50 people will be allowed at funerals. Meanwhile campgrounds and caravan parks will be re-opened – but not with communal facilities such as kitchens or bathrooms. he Premier said that if community transmission rates continued to remain low and testing rates continued to remain high, the government would look to further relax restrictions from June 22.

Dine-in back on the menu By Tate Papworth Brimbank residents will soon be allowed to enjoy a meal inside cafes, restaurants and pubs as part of the staged easing of COVID-19 restrictions. From June 1, up to 20 patrons will be permitted within an enclosed space, providing the requirement of one person per four square metres is met. From June 22, up to 50 patrons will be allowed in venues, which will extend to 100 during the second half of July.
Julie Tran owns the huan An Vietnamese restaurant in Sunshine and said she’s eager to start illing tables. “We’ll have to measure the place out to make sure we can it them all, but we’re conident we’ll be able to it 20 people in when restrictions begin to lit,” Ms Tran said. “We’ll have all the appropriate signage, hand sanitiser at the front of the shop and we may even have a designated entrance and exit. “It also looks like we’ll have to take down customer details when they dine in, so there’s a lot of information that still needs to be
released.” While she’s excited to ofer table service once more, Ms Tran said takeaway would still be a high priority. “I’m glad they started with 20 people and not 10, it just wouldn’t have been cost efective,” Ms Tran said. “We’re still going to do delivery service, which has proven really popular and I suspect a few people might still be a bit ify on heading out.” Other places such as public bars and gaming areas will remain closed throughout June, as will restrictions on food courts.

Caroline Springs’ bus services are set for a massive boost. Minister for Public Transport Melissa Horne last week announced that from July 12, route 462 buses would be extended to Caroline Springs station for the irst time, while route 460 buses would have a brand-new timetable. Changes to route 462 would give passengers living along this route a connection to Metro trains at Watergardens station and V/Line trains at Caroline Springs station. Route 462 buses would be increased to every 20 minutes in the peak and every 40 minutes during the week, while there would be an updated timetable on weekends. Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz said the changes would also improve bus access for students at Brookside College, Creekside College and Lakeview College. “So many locals rely on the bus to get to school, the shops and train services to the city, which is why I’m proud we’re providing this vital connection,” she said “We’re always looking at opportunities to provide a better bus network for people living in the outer western suburbs.” While public transport continues to run, the community is still urged to act vigilantly with COVID-19 restrictions still in place. Cleaning Blitz Working for Victoria We welcome the inclusion of Brimbank in the Working for Victoria Community Cleaning Blitz to help slow the spread of COVID-19 across 10 regional and 26 suburban communities in the state. There are more than 70 cleaners working around Brimbank wearing orange high-vis vests each day as part of the Victorian Government funded program. The cleaners are wiping down and disinfecting community areas and amenities including seats, traic light buttons, bike racks, door handles and objects that are touched frequently by the public. They will be working
from 7am-6pm seven days a week. This cleaning will continue until June 14 after the State Government recently extended the program from four to ive weeks. It will be in addition to the current cleansing service that Council has provided throughout the COVID-19 pandemic in our public spaces. The initiative also creates jobs in Brimbank during this unprecedented health emergency that has hit our community hard inancially and cost many people their jobs.

Hampshire Road Master Plan Stage 3 Upgrade – Civic Green Works are progressing well on the $5.85 million project to create a new Civic Green on Hampshire Road in Sunshine. This new civic green will transform the heart of Sunshine, beneitting local traders and the community. Since works started in February, 2020, signiicant progress has been made in upgrading and relocating underground assets.
Alfrieda Street Civic Plaza Project The St Albans Town Centre is currently a hive of activity with works on the $1.67 million Alfrieda Street Civic Plaza underway. This soonto-be unveiled space will be an exciting place for people to meet and socialise, as well as being a new cultural and event gathering space. Errington Reserve, St Albans Council is nearing completion of a $4.3 million sports and community pavilion and new tennis courts, which will replace the existing pavilion. Paving works are currently underway around the building, the ceiling has been put in, and looring inishes are almost inished along with the kitchen it out. The tennis courts, valued at $1.9 million, have reached the end of construction, including lighting landscaping and planting.

New sports pavilions
Dempster Park Tennis
Three new sports pavilions will be built at More Park, Ardeer: Delahey Reserve, Delahey and Bon Thomas Reserve, Deer Park . These pavilions will include a social space, kitchen, toilets, change rooms, irst aid rooms and storage. Tenders for these three projects will soon be awarded. Construction is expected to start in mid-2020.
Upgrade works will include resurfacing two tennis courts with synthetic grass and extending the courts to provide a walkway between them. The tender has recently closed, and construction is expected to start soon after the contractor is appointed. The project is funded by Council, North Sunshine Tennis Club, Tennis Australian and the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Programme.

Council braces for budget blow By Tate Papworth Brimbank council is bracing itself for a hit of about $10 million to its operating budget and cash low. In its quarterly inancial report for the period ending March 31, the council predicts signiicant shortages due to a number of revenue sources drying up. he biggest hit will come from the deferment of rates, which the council predicts will be in the vicinity of $7.5 million. It has also predicted that parking
infringements will decrease by $1.05 million, animal registration deferrals will result in a loss of $350,000 and $965,000 will be lost due to the closure of the St Albans and Sunshine leisure centres. Closure of other facilities across the municipality is predicted to cost $700,000. he forecast closing cash at bank for the year ending June 30 is $44.30 million, which is $9.63 million less than the budgeted closing cash at bank of $53.93 million. Brimbank council organisational excellence director Shane Marr said the council would

Hospital turns one he Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital is celebrating its irst birthday. It’s been a busy year for the hospital’s more than 800 staf, who have helped deliver more than 6000 babies. Tallia Baez Mikhael will forever share a special connection with the hospital as the irst baby born there. Tallia was the irst of 6054 babies – including 102 sets of twins – born at the hospital in the past year. he hospital also ofers paediatric services and features the area’s irst neonatal intensive care unit to treat the most critically-ill patients. Since opening, the hospital has treated 22,780 patients, including 10,434 children. It includes 20 maternity delivery rooms, 237 beds, 39 special care nursery cots, four theatres and additional clinics, and covers more loor space than the MCG. Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said the
hospital’s irst birthday was a special milestone for the west. “It is wonderful to celebrate this special milestone and I thank the hundreds of staf who have delivered the very best maternity and paediatric care to sick children when they were most vulnerable,” she said. “his hospital means so much to local families and the thousands of mums who have had their baby here.” he hospital is forecast to deliver 7000 babies each year by 2026. By Tate Papworth Western Health staf working on the frontline in the ight against COVID-19 won’t lack personal protective equipment. St Albans’ generous Quang Minh Temple community recently donated 10,000 medical masks, 5000 gloves and 50 plastic protection masks to Western Health and local nursing homes. Dr Nhan Phuc Pham said the community didn’t want doctors, nurses or health care workers to go without masks and were concerned when they heard about a lack of supply.

Last year, members of the temple raised more than $300,000 for the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital. he funds were used to purchase a neonatal intensive care transport cot to provide for the safe transfer of sick and premature babies to the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Six neonatal cameras that allow families remote viewing of their babies were also purchased with the money raised. In January, the Vietnamese community helped rattle tins at the St Albans Lunar Festival, raising a staggering $20,000 to help support those impacted by the summer’s devastating bushires.

Truck driver dies

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Sommerville Road and Fairbairns Road about 1pm following reports of a collision between a truck and a bus. Charges laid Detectives from the Brimbank Sexual Offences Child Abuse Investigation Team have charged a man in relation to historical sexual offending in St Albans. The investigation relates to alleged sexual assaults against two children at a St Albans residence between 1999 and 2019. A 74-year-old St Albans man has been charged with 14 offences including sexual assault of a child under 16 and indecent act with a child under 16.

Footy ready for a new world By Ewen McRae he familiar sounds of football will soon be ringing out on ovals across the west, but it won’t be quite how you remember it. AFL Victoria recently gave the all clear for local clubs to return to training from May 25, however contact work is still prohibited, and clubs must train their players in groups of no more than 10, and at opposite ends of the oval. It’s a tentative irst step back to hopefully playing games, but how are local clubs coping with designing a training program for a contact sport when no contact is allowed? In the Essendon District Football League, Keilor coach Mick McGuane said it would take some getting used to, but it was an important move. “I think it’s fantastic that we’re back,” he said. “I think it’s just what most people in society need, to be able to play sport, so I can’t wait to get going. It will be challenging no doubt, but if we’re any chance of getting a season going this micro-group training is something we’re just going to have to get used to.” Keilor will have training groups running most nights of the week in order to accommodate all of its mens, women’s and junior sides. Under the current parameters from AFL Victoria, clubs can have two groups of 10 players on an oval, but the groups cannot interact and social distancing of 1.5 metres must be observed at all times. Tackling, bumping and marking contests are prohibited, and changerooms are unable to be used. Each club must also appoint a COVID safety oicer to undertake government training and ensure all these and other measures are being adhered to. ater a losing division three grand inal efort in 2019 his side was simply happy to get the ball back in their hands. “I think every footballer in Australia is happy to get back to training,” Moreland said. “It’s a new situation for everyone, but we’re itching to get back now. We ended last year on a pretty bad note, so we’re chasing that redemption and hopefully we get that chance.
“We’ll listen to the experts and do everything right as a footy club.” In division one, seven-time defending champions Deer Park will return to the track this week, but coach Marc Bullen said the changes would be a new test. “It’s very challenging,” Bullen said. “You throw out a red Sherrin and 10 people will want to touch it, so trying to get those 10
people to train while social distancing is going to be very challenging. But in saying that, I want to see footy return and we’re hopeful more than anything that that can happen.” While returning to training is one thing, a start to some sort of premiership season is another issue entirely, with no word yet from AFL Victoria on whether a season start date is likely. Any start to a season is likely to be without crowds, putting additional pressure on clubs to generate revenue from gate takings or a canteen. McGuane said despite some drawbacks, a return to playing had to be a priority for local clubs. “I think we still have time to get a season underway at the back end of July, inishing in October,” he said. “A lot of people have been doing it tough, but sport gives you that outlet and it’s important for mental and physical wellbeing. We want to make sure we give everyone that wants to be involved in sport an opportunity to reconnect. “It’s an opportunity for clubs to look at themselves and see if they’ve become too reliant on certain income streams and maybe there’s a better way of operating.” However Bullen said if fans were barred from attending games, he would favour scrapping the season. “We want that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow that if we start training that we can get back to playing,” he said. “Having said that, if there’s no crowds there’s no football in my opinion, it’s as simple as that. “We play football to be around your mates and to give back to the volunteers and your supporters, so it’s just not viable to play without fans.” For Moreland, a return to play would come down to individual players making their own call, including giving up their playing wages. “You never say never,” he said.

Brimbank streetlights go green By Tate Papworth Brimbank council is on a mission to change its streetlights to energy-eicient LED technology. he three-year project will cost $3.4 million and replace more than 4000 lights. he project is expected to save the council about $6 million over the next 20 years through reduced energy bills and maintenance charges, and deliver a substantial reduction in corportate greenhouse gas emissions, according to a council oicer’s report. he project will be broken up into two

stages. Stage one will take place over the 2019-20 and 2020-21 inancial years and will deal with replacements in electricity distributor Powercor’s network area. Stage two will occur in 2021-23 and is for replacements in the Jemena network distribution area.

At its May meeting, the council voted to award a contract valued at $1.01 million to Gerard Lighting Pty Ltd for the purchase of lights for stage one. he oicer’s report raised some concerns about the project, noting it had the potential to create real or perceived impacts to residents and businesses.

MAV slams election decision he Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) has slammed the Victorian government’s decision to go ahead with the general council elections this year as disappointing. MAV had been calling on the government to postpone the elections, set to be held in October, for 12 months. But last week the government said it would go ahead as planned. A new community-based research project aimed at improving the education opportunities and health of children and young people in lower socio-economic communities, including Brimbank, has been given a multi-million dollar boost. Victoria University’s Mitchell Institute has been awarded a $5.5 million grant from the Paul Ramsay Foundation to fund the research program, which is part of a combined $11 million donation from the Foundation to Victoria University and Griith University in Queensland. he main focus of the research will be around boosting outcomes in early learning as children transition to school, and later as students inish school and seek further education, training or employment. he project will include working with local community partners in the Brimbank area and will build on the success of existing programs, such as Growing Brimbank. Victoria University Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Dawkins said the project would have a proactive approach in addressing and overcoming the disproportionately high rates of disadvantage among young people in Brimbank in Melbourne’s west. “here is growing recognition that where people live has a signiicant inluence on their opportunity to excel and thrive and that localised place-based approaches can help to address inequity,” he said. “Our role in the project will have a particular focus on creating opportunities for students as they transition from school to further education, training or employment.” Prior to the COVID-19 impacts, Brimbank’s unemployment rate was twice the national average and just 21 per cent of the population had completed year 12, compared to the national average of 52 per cent. Project lead, associate professor Melinda Craike said wealth and parental education were among the biggest impact on whether young people would succeed in education and have good long-term health. “It seems inconceivable in a modern Australia that young people from low income areas fall up to three years behind in their learning by age 15 compared to people from high income areas,” she said. “his project aims to work with the local community to overcome inequality that disadvantage students face so they can succeed in education, lead a healthy life and reach their full potential.” Tate Papworth

No chance to say goodbye Star Weekly reporter Esther Lauaki has returned home to New Zealand for a family emergency. Her dad died while she was in isolation under the country’s strict quarantine rules. his is her story. Nothing could have prepared me for losing a parent – particularly in a pandemic. From the safety of my Melbourne home earlier this year, I felt far removed from the heartbreaking news stories out of COVID-19 epicentres such as Europe and the US echoing the words “everybody dies alone”. Until, on May 11, my wonderful dad Iakopo Lauaki died in an Auckland hospital ater a long battle with a rare blood cancer. He wasn’t alone. He slipped away peacefully with my mum and wife of 45 years, Faaiuga, by his side. My family now knows well the sting, and sometimes cruelty, of COVID-19 restrictions in place to slow the spread of the virus. he universal rules in post-COVID countries, including New Zealand and Australia, stipulate that no visitors are permitted to hospitals and fewer than 10, if any at all, are allowed at funerals. But doctors at the hospital made an exception allowing one visitor in my dad’s inal days. My three siblings hadn’t seen my dad for weeks before he died. Despite an application to the health ministry for early release from the mandatory 14 day lockdown in a government-managed hotel to be with my dad – I ultimately missed a inal goodbye too. A day ater my dad died, 10 days into quarantine, my application for early release was approved on compassionate grounds and I was reunited with my family to plan and attend his funeral. Planning within the restraints of COVID rules presents a unique set of challenges. Traditional Samoan funerals are usually a week-long afair with hundreds of mourners exchanging gits of money, handmade mats and food. Samoans grieve collectively with their loved ones and my father would have laid in state at our home where a steady stream of relatives could pay respects, sing hymns and tell stories. service virtually. On paper, strict COVID rules are the reason New Zealand and Australia are now able to lit restrictions and awaken their economies slowly and safely. In practice, I feel I will never be prepared to embrace this “new normal”.

From little things, big things grow By Tate Papworth he inner-west boasts a colourful history, much of which can be seen on the many quirky old buildings that have stood the test of time. But as the area evolves, those buildings are becoming fewer in number. Luckily, a Yarraville artist is on a mission to preserve as many as he can by creating miniature versions of them. David Hourigan has been re-creating the landmarks in his workshop on a full-time basis for 18 months and said the spark came to him randomly. “I used to build model kits as a kid, then one day I thought … why building a model spitire when I’ve never lown one,” he said. “So I want to make things that have relevance to me. “It started of when I’d walk around my streets and come across a cool building.” From there, Hourigan set to work. “I start to take a lot of pictures of the building, I do lots of sketches and measure it all up,” he said. “hen I come back to the studio and scale it to a size that works for me.” he buildings recreated by Hourigan are by no means grand. he Yarraville Racing Pigeon Club, the Switch House in Station Road in Seddon and the Olympic Doughnuts van that was at Footscray station had all seen better days, but that’s what makes them interesting to Hourigan . “Most of my work is small, insigniicant, decrepit buildings … I’m trying to capture them before they’re all gone,” he said. “It’s important to remember where we come from.” he process takes three to ive weeks and Hourigan builds every component from scratch with painstaking detail. “he pieces that take a lot of time are the things you don’t look at, like a water meter or 16 BRIMBANK & NORTHWEST STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 26 May, 2020
an NBN box bolted to a wall. “Details make it come alive – rusty pipes and bits and pieces give it personality and stop it being a boring chunk of wall.” Hourigan recently held an exhibition where he sold a number of pieces, leaving him a little overwhelmed. “he reaction to my work has been incredible. … I guess nostalgia is part of it, but there’s also a sense of wanting to capture all this before it goes,” he said. “I had 10 pieces at the exhibition in March and it was good to sell a few of them … I thought it would be incredibly diicult to part with them, but I’m running out of room in my workshop.” With his work gaining popularity, Hourigan said he’s been inundated with suggestions for his next piece. “here’s a massive list of possibilities and the list honestly keeps growing. “I get lots of suggestions and I’ve got a few things in mind so we’ll have to wait and see.” For more information visit the Instagram handle @davidhouriganartist.

Keilor’s rich history still visible By Tate Papworth Keilor holds a unique place within Brimbank. A suburb unlike any other, it has evolved into a highly sought-ater area for home buyers. It’s easy to see why, with its close proximity to the Melbourne CBD and Brimbank Park. But it also boasts an incredibly rich history, with many reminders of the past still visible – from ancient fossils to historic bridges and churches that have stood the test of time. he suburb featured prominently during the gold rush, oten used as a camping place for teams returning from, or heading out, to ields in Castlemaine and Ballarat. In 1854, Caroline Chisholm (now well-known for her humanitarian support of immigrant female and family welfare in Australia) began a campaign to provide cheap and safe accommodation for families of prospectors and newly-arrived immigrants, along the track to the goldields. Ten shelters and 10 stoves were built and by 1855 they were ready for occupation. he site of the former shelter shed at Keilor is located on Old Calder Highway, today, you can see an historic panel recording the history of the sheds as you enter Keilor Village. But life in Keilor began well before the gold rush. he Wurundjeri people inhabited the area for about 40,000 years, making Keilor one of the oldest inhabited sites in Australia. One of the suburb’s most notable inds was the discovery of the Keilor Cranium in 1940. he skull was found in the yellowish silt of an ancient terrace and is said to be that of a middle-aged aboriginal man. Radiocarbon dating suggests the skull, now placed in a museum, is between 12,000 and 14,700 years old. Other reminders of Keilor’s past remain in town. Overnewton Castle, the residence of William Taylor, is a popular location for weddings and functions. First built as a single-storey, six-roomed colonial cottage, the homestead remained in the hands of the Taylor family until the 1950s. he second storey was built in 1859. Dr Leslie Norton bought Overnewton Castle with his wife and young family in 1975 and has restored the iconic residence over the decades. A few kilometres from the castle lies a reminder of the suburb’s bush village days.
Christ Church Anglican Keilor was dedicated by Dr Macartney, Dean of Melbourne on January 28, 1877. It replaced a corrugated iron building on the Old Calder Highway between Bonield and Flora streets. he building, complete with an entrance porch, slate roof and pointed arched windows, looks a little more weathered today, but still stands proudly. One of the more visible landmarks around the town is the old iron bridge, which serves as passage over the Maribyrnong River. he bridge was built in 1868 to replace the original timber bridge, which had been washed away. According to an excerpt from the Argus newspaper at the time it was built, the bridge cost the ‘whole amount of the rates of the district for two years, together with a grant of 2000 pounds from government’. It proved money well spent, with the bridge remaining an eye-catching landmark more than 100 years later.

Renault Koleos is a medium-large SUV that’s been on sale in Australia since 2008, with the current, second-generation, arriving in 2016. Coming as it does from the Renault-Nissan Alliance, Koleos has a real multinational pedigree, designed in France with Japanese components and built at Renault’s Samsung factory in South Korea. Renault Koleos sits on the same platform as the Nissan X-Trail and shares the 2.5-litre petrol engine and continuously variable transmission. Poor sales numbers have seen the previous diesel option dropped. he latest upgrade tagged MY2020 arrived in August 2019 and gave Koleos some exterior styling tweaks and improved comfort.

Our Intens AWD test vehicle came with an eye-catching new “Millesim Red” body colour as well as Intens some extra chrome features. Twin chrome exhaust pipes add a sort-of sporty touch.
Interior Koleos only comes with ive seats unlike the X-Trail which has a third-row option. Rear seat space is excellent in all dimensions and allows three adults to travel in reasonable comfort. With two rear passengers the central armrest can be folded to reveal drink holders. Boot space with the rear seatbacks in place is 458 litres expanding to 1690 litres when they are folded.

the Koleos compared to many vehicles in this class may prove a bit of a hassle for some people when getting in and out. On a positive side, once you’re in there the view out is very good. On the road Koleos is a capable enough vehicle with good, but unexciting, performance. We found it needed a bit of urging to climb steepish hills without losing momentum. Suspension is a little harsh and relatively irm without making the ride uncomfortable. Steering is light and direct. Handling is good. On the motorway Koleos cruises comfortably despite its fairly modest outputs and with enough pulling power to cope comfortably with the occasional hills. Fuel consumption is listed at 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres for the Intens AWD. We averaged 10.3 L/100 km during our week-long test, acceptable enough for a fairly large SUV.
