All 4 Paws Dog Rescue has saved more than 650 dogs during the past three years. The volunteer-run group rescues and rehomes dogs from pounds, and takes in surrenders, including pregnant dogs and senior canines. All 4 Paws was founded by Altona Meadows resident Maryanne Kovach and her friend Danni McRae, with the encouragement of their friends Terri Sutton and Arianne Spratt. Ms Kovach, who is currently looking after some pups which came into care at just four days old, said it often cost thousands of dollars to help rescued dogs. “We never know what we are getting, such as Lilla, a Newfoundland, who was underweight and in poor condition – it cost almost $7k just to get her to a state of being able to be rehomed,” she said. Ms Kovach said All 4 Paws relied on donations, gifts and fundraising to continue saving dogs. Fight for council jobs By Benjamin Millar Western suburbs state MPs are calling on Maribyrnong council to reverse its “shock” decision to sack 150 casual staf in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Maribyrnong council last month terminated the employment of 150 casual workers due to the forced closure of the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre and council-run facilities. he sackings have been slammed by the Australian Services Union (ASU) and criticised
by Footscray MP Katie Hall, Williamstown MP Melissa Horne and state legislative council member Ingrid Stitt. An ASU petition seeking reinstatement of the workers, launched last week, has attracted more than 600 signatures. “Terminating staf was unnecessary and will worsen the impacts of COVID-19 on our community … Maribyrnong has no justiication to sever the employment of staf when the option to stand them down was available,” the petition states.
Maribyrnong council chief executive Stephen Wall told last month’s council meeting the job losses resulted from the government’s decision to close a number of customer-facing facilities. He said the terminations were to help casuals ineligible for the JobKeeper scheme to access government support. But a strongly-worded joint letter from the Labor MPs sent to Mr Wall, seen by Star Weekly, argued the terminations were “an unnecessary shock” to the staf, particularly when the council had the option to stand them down.
he letter noted that many were long-term staf. “We respectfully request that the 150 terminations are each rescinded, so that staf are available for redeployment and work when services reopen.” ASU branch secretary Lisa Darmanin said no other council in Victoria had terminated the employment of so many staf. She said the Fair Work Commission advised that the council could rescind the terminations. Maribyrnong council was contacted.

Meatworks cluster investigated By Benjamin Millar WorkSafe has begun investigating the breakout of COVID-19 at Cedar Meats. he number of conirmed cases traced to the Brooklyn meatworks had reached 99 by Monday, making it Victoria’s worst cluster. It comes as McDonald’s closed 12 restaurants, including sites in Laverton North, for deep cleaning ater a truck driver from an external service provider tested positive for coronavirus. McDonald’s Australia released a statement on Sunday, which said no other employees
have tested positive for COVID-19, but a decision had been made to close and deep clean 12 restaurants where the driver had made deliveries “out of an abundance of caution”. McDonald’s restaurants located in Hoppers Crossing, Melton East, Taylors Lakes, Calder Highway northbound/outbound and southbound/inbound and BP Rockbank Service Centre outbound have also been closed for cleaning. Meanwhile, a staf member at Myer’s Highpoint store tested positive to coronavirus, while Footscray aged care home Doutta Gala
has so far evaded a further breakout ater a staf member returned a positive test earlier this month. he total number of coronavirus cases in Victoria was 1567 as of Monday, with 18 deaths. Hobsons Bay had 20 conirmed cases, two of those were active, while Maribyrnong had 16 reported cases, with two remaining active. Of six new cases on Monday, one was linked to the Sunshine Hospital outbreak, taking the total number of cases to the outbreak to three. A further case had also been linked to the McDonald’s Fawner outbreak, with the total
number of cases there at 12. At the weekend, two new cases were linked to Cedar Meats, according to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Last week, Victoria’s chief health oicer Brett Sutton conceded the cluster could have been handled better. “It’s pretty clear it’s been an explosive outbreak in terms of numbers,” Professor Sutton told 3AW. “I think two linked cases is enough to shut a place down. Maybe we shouldn’t have waited for a third linked case.”

Fence helps mend loneliness Newport Gardens Primary School pupils have been pouring their hearts into a labour of love to stay connected during the COVID-19 pandemic. Featuring dozens of laminated hearts sharing messages of gratitude from pupils who have been isolated in recent weeks, the school’s “gratitude fence” has been catching the eye of passersby as it grows day by day. School captain Maddie said she came up with the idea as a way to keep the school community in good spirits and connected during a diicult time.
She asked the school principal to send out a note she had written for the school newsletter, explaining her gratitude fence idea and encouraging the school community to get involved by making hearts to hang on the fence. “I love to make people smile and be happy so it’s really nice to see people walk past and have a look,” she said. “I know when some people are getting sad they go down and have a look and they can be happy that school will be back soon.” Maddie said she and her fellow school leaders have been working together to collect the
hearts, laminate them and hang them. She has enjoyed reading the messages of hope and gratitude that each heart contains. “Most of them say they are grateful for their family; parents, grandparents, amazing sisters and brothers and their pets are the main ones.” Maddie said she is looking forward to the school reopening in the coming weeks and life getting back to normal. “ I’m looking forward to seeing all my friends and teachers.”
More than $300,000 in community funding is being fast-tracked by Hobsons Bay council as part of eforts to tackle the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. Councillors last week voted to bring forward the 2021 Hobsons Bay Community Grants Program to help support the community in bouncing back from the shutdown forced by strict social distancing measures. Changes to the program will include a streamlined application and assessment process to enable distribution of funds to community groups as quickly as possible. he council’s drat 2020-21 budget earmarked $308,000 for the program, including $30,000 pledged from Toyota Australia. A report to last week’s council meeting recommended that the application process be simpliied and the grants go to support community groups in the context of the pandemic. he council still plans to open applications this week and close them on June 30, but decision-making will be fast-tracked so funds can be available as soon as July. Cr Sandra Wilson told the meeting that the grants program must be adjusted to accommodate the diferent circumstances in which the community is operating. Cr Peter Hemphill said by distributing the grants sooner than usual the council can get into “the community building” a little bit earlier. he council will also write to all events and festivals funding applicants, asking them to consider alternative approaches to their plans given the COVID-19 context. A Melbourne father accused of murdering his daughter and son-in-law as they were entering their Yarraville home on New Year’s Eve has pleaded not guilty on the grounds of mental impairment. Virus stems pokies losses By Benjamin Millar Gambling reform advocates have welcomed the inner-west’s sharp drop in gaming machine losses during the COVID-19 crisis. More than $16 million that would have been lost to poker machines in local pubs and clubs in recent weeks has been saved since the venues were closed as part of strict social distancing measures forced by the pandemic. Figures released by the Alliance for Gambling Reform show Maribyrnong residents have saved almost $9 million to date and Hobsons Bay gamblers more than $7 million, compared

to the same period last year. Alliance for Gambling Reform chief advocate Tim Costello said the igures show poker machines are a blight on Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay’s economy and community. “It has been awful reading about the lives lost to COVID-19 around Australia, and my heart goes out to the people who have been
afected,” Reverend Costello said. “We also feel tremendously deeply for the people of Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay who have lost their jobs through this devastating crisis. But the shutdown of poker machines has undoubtedly improved lives for many people for the better, and perhaps even saved local lives.” Reverend Costello said Australians lost $25 billion gambling last year, the highest rate of losses per head in the entire world. He said it stood to reason that at least some of the millions of dollars that would have otherwise been lost to poker machine since
the March 23 shutdown would have been spent locally, boosting the economy at a time when it is needed most. “Poker machines are not innocuous, they do the majority of gambling harm in this country because there are just so many of those machines plaguing our nation – roughly 200,000 of them,” he said. “COVID-19 is presenting us with a unique opportunity to rethink the dire situation Australia has gotten itself into with the prevalence of gambling. We can come out of this crisis with a real positive if we can signiicantly reduce gambling harm.”

Council crossing works wish list By Benjamin Millar Better pedestrian and bus connections and new open green space are all on Hobsons Bay council’s wish list for Williamstown North railway station. Hobsons Bay residents are being urged to provide feedback on a drat Ferguson Street Level Crossing Removal Precinct Plan to guide redevelopment of land around the station as part of the state government’s level crossing removal. Cr Jonathon Marsden told last week’s council meeting that a inal decision on whether the
railway line will become a “sky rail” over the road or tunnel beneath is due to be announced in coming months, ahead of work beginning in 2021-22. “We seek to inluence the shape of the surrounding streetscape and indeed the open space and the carpark and the bus stop and all of the other elements,” he said. “No matter what happens with the grade separation, whether it goes over or under, the community can be sure that … council will work really hard to untangle the snarl that currently exists.” Cr Marsden said the current pedestrian
access in the precinct is “perilous”, particularly with so many school students in the area. “here’s a lot of community anxiety around this project … this design goes out to the community now for their input, so we can make into a workable, safe reality.” Cr Angela Altair said the proposal will help the council advocate strongly for the community. “What you’ve got right now is just a dog’s breakfast, a dead space, it’s something you just get across as quickly as possible.” he precinct plan is out now for public feedback.

Yoga for kids Point Cook mother Regina Cajucom is using technology to connect young people with yoga during the COVID-19 pandemic. Regina, director of Namaste Yogis, said that before the pandemic regulations came in, she was teaching yoga to children – from the age of two through to high-school students – at YMCAs, early learning centres, kindergartens and schools across the west. With more than 1300 children’s yoga classes under her belt, Regina said that the pandemic lockdown had forced her to “think outside the box”. Regina said she wanted to keep classes interactive, rather than pre-recorded, so she was using the Zoom video conferencing platform. “It’s a good activity for children needing a break from online learning,” she said. “It helps them focus and it instils a sense of calmness.”
Regina said her children’s classes incorporated yoga poses, breathing and games, including some suggested by her own two daughters, who are aged 6 and 10 years. “When you teach kids, it’s so diferent to adults,” she said. “It’s just a diferent feeling, aterwards – you’re allowed to be silly, loud, sot and fun, while at the same time teaching them some valuable self regulation skills that they can use for the rest of their lives.” In addition to ofering children’s, family and adult yoga, Regina will be running a free Kids Yoga session for primary-school aged children through the Wyndham Together website from 11-11.30am on May 23. Foot pain is extremely common, affecting more than 80% of people at some point in their lives, with heel pain being the most common of all human foot complaints. Despite their frequency, these conditions are often mismanaged and incorrectly treated, leaving many sufferers spending time and money on treatments without long-term solutions or relief. But why are such common problems seemingly so hard to treat effectively? We asked one of Australia’s leading foot, knee and leg pain experts, and practitioner to some of the worlds best athletes, Dr. Paul Dowie, from Foot and Leg Pain Clinics. “Besides the fact that the foot is one of the bodies most complex structures and we are on them all the time, there are two major reasons foot pain and particularly heel pain treatment is often ineffective, especially long-term. Either only the symptoms are being addressed and not the underlying cause or the exact nature of the condition is not being identified or understood. For example, most heel pain is incorrectly assumed to be an inflammatory condition, but it is nearly always a result of nerve impingement or tissue degeneration. Tissue thickening is often mistaken for inflammation, contributing to incorrect diagnoses and treatment. This is a big problem because treating your degenerative condition with anti-inflammatory medications or injections can cause further tissue damage, making your condition worse,” explains Dr. Dowie. Nurses answer the call By Tate Papworth Western Health has bolstered its nursing staf as it continues to help battle the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 100 nurses at Western Health have taken part in a series of training programs giving them the skills to work in the intensive care unit. A further 20 nurses completed a course to work in emergency department triage and more than 50 subacute nurses refreshed their skills to care for more acute patients. As part of preparations for the coronavirus pandemic, the training included face-to-face and online learning, and the opportunity to shadow other nursing staf during their shits.

She’d previously worked as an ICU nurse and used the program to refresh her skills. “I’d worked in ICU for about 13 years – it’s like riding a bike, I don’t think you really forget it,” Ms Lennon said. “I’d always wanted to go back to help … I’ve got skills why not use them? “When this opportunity came up I jumped at it.” Ms Lennon said the one thing that struck her was how much better equipment has become. “Medicine moves so quickly, but one thing I’ve noticed is that the equipment that’s used now is more modern and is actually easier to use. I’m just so happy to be able to get out there

and help.” Fellow nurse Jessica Wren works in acute aged care at Western Health. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, she enrolled to expand her skills for both the emergency department and ICU. “I’m the kind of person who likes to keep
learning so this was a great opportunity,” Ms Wren said. “I’d actually been looking into doing some postgraduate training just as the pandemic started. “As well as learning new skills in this program … it’s also been a really good refresher of the basics I learnt at university.”
No sign of media grants A federal government grants program aimed at supporting regional and community media outlets during the COVID-19 pandemic has been labelled as “inadequate” by Labor. Last month, the federal government announced a $50 million Public Interest News Gathering (PING) grants program in response to the economic impact of the coronavirus crisis on newsrooms. But Labor’s communications spokeswoman, Michelle Rowland said the grants program – and its administration – proved the government was out of touch with the needs of the media industry. “he PING is late, it is inadequate, it is confused and it undermines press freedom and the public’s right to know by putting the minister at the centre of grants approvals,” Ms Rowland said. “he minister should have no role in determining winners and losers when it comes to the survival of media outlets. “he opening of the PING also comes over ive weeks ater Labor wrote to the deputy prime minister requesting COVID-19 relief funding for regional and community media. It will again be weeks before successful applicants are announced and funding lows,” she said. “he media is essential, not a service that should go into hibernation during COVID-19. Unfortunately, we have already seen suspensions and closures of local news gathering as a result of indecision, incompetence and delay by the Morrison government.”

Guiding the way through COVID-19 By Esther Lauaki Wherever Emma Jago goes – Valmai takes the lead. he 21-year-old law student and her guide dog have been inseparable since the young labrador came to live with Emma in her western suburbs home a year ago. Emma is one of the more than 1200 people with low vision or blindness that Guide Dogs Victoria helps each year. “When I irst got Valmai, everything became easier because I now have a literal set of eyes,” she said. “Valmai is my irst guide dog, and before her, I was unsure about inding my way around unfamiliar locations, especially while following a map. “Valmai and I can both make mistakes and be unsure, but between us, we manage just ine and can basically go anywhere and survive. “She always makes me smile by pushing her head against me, wagging her tail enthusiastically, rolling on the loor on her back, or half sitting on me.” In a normal week, the outgoing duo attends RMIT University city campus most days, harmonica lessons at Footscray and woodwork in Kensington but life is much quieter these days. COVID-19 restrictions on outdoor activities have posed a unique set of challenges for those with guide dogs. “Valmai is a dog with much attitude, and is oten too smart for her own good,” Emma said. “She is into everything and loves to chew. “Our biggest problem is occupying such an energetic dog as she becomes bored without entertainment very easily. “We still go out for walks, and do activities such as catching the train or bus, walking

through shops, and congested areas to ensure her skills are maintained, as well as lots of playtime.” Guide Dogs Victoria chief executive Karen Hayes last week acknowledged the role that guide dogs now play during this time of uncertainty. “he comfort and companionship a guide
dog provides has never been more essential for, or cherished by, guide dog handlers,” Ms Hayes said. “he coronavirus pandemic has presented challenges to us as an organisation, but the welfare of guide dog clients and our dogs is at the heart of everything we do … so we’ve simply had to ind ways to overcome these
challenges. “his has meant supporting clients through phone calls, video conferences, email and social media, while our trainers have been busy setting up obstacle courses at our campuses, or training dogs from home, so they can continue getting our guide dogs-in-training ready to change lives.”

Casaccio Egg Farm sets a crackin’ pace Casaccio Egg Farm might have been Wyndham’s “hidden little secret” since 1966 – but the COVID-19 pandemic has made it more popular and essential than ever. he family-owned and run business has a proud history in the local community, spanning 54 years. From humble beginnings with a small lock of 2000 hens in their backyard farm, Casaccio Egg Farm has expanded its locks and developed environmentally-friendly automated hen-houses, free-range systems and a state-of-the-art grading loor. Put the lid on smelly bins Home-cooked meals and spring cleaning blitzes have been a common pastime for people staying home to slow the spread of COVID-19 – and the bins are illing up. Innovative program keeps people connected More than 250 people from across Australia have applied to join a virtual volunteering program, which has supported people in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. genU’s Virtual Volunteer program has connected elderly members of the community and people with disability with volunteers either over the phone, via video calls or through letters. genU volunteer programs lead Emily Learey said virtual volunteering proved to be an innovative way to keep the community connected. “When the physical distancing restrictions took efect, we immediately wanted to support our volunteers to stay involved and provide social support to our clients and residents who had been most impacted,” Emily said. “We recognised early on that the elderly, and people living with disability, needed our support and continued engagement to promote their mental health and stay socially connected. “Our Virtual Volunteer program was designed and launched with a two-week turnaround, which enabled our volunteers to continue to provide a social support service from the safety and convenience of home.” More than 250 people from across Australia have ofered to join the program since its launch, with volunteers keen to make a diference for those who had been become socially isolated by the COVD-19 pandemic. “It was quite incredible to see so many people from Victoria and interstate respond with their ofers of support. Our virtual volunteers are now donating their time using services such as regular voice calls, video chats and letter writing,” Emily said. “Many people have wanted to reach out, particularly if they are not working or at home with more time on their hands.
