COVID sewerage project By Alesha Capone Samples of sewerage taken from the Western Treatment Plant in Werribee are being used in an innovative project to identify potential clusters of coronavirus infections. Melbourne Water chief scientist Dr Melita Stevens said the surveillance of wastewater for the virus was an “exciting and signiicant” step. “his sampling could potentially identify emerging or re-emergent outbreaks, better characterise the extent of asymptomatic infections and community transmission, identify the true peak in infected individuals [compared

with conirmed cases] within a sewer catchment and conirm ‘clearance’ of the COVID-19 virus from an area,” Dr Stevens said. Melbourne Water became involved in the Collaboration on Sewage Surveillance of SARS-COV-2 (ColoSSos Project) ater being approached by Water Research Australia to co-ordinate a national approach to testing sewage for the coronavirus. he ColoSSos Project, which has 12 utility partners, 10 research organisations and six health departments involved, is being supported by the Water Services Association of Australia.

Dr Nick Crosbie is managing the project for Melbourne Water. He said sampling has commenced at diferent sites across the nation. “his project is in its early stages but is a promising methodology that may yield important new information to help inform disease control measures such as social distancing to latten the curve.” Dr Crosbie said. “Sampling began at the start of April at the Western Treatment Plant and is happening across Melbourne’s sewerage network. “Samples are collected twice a week at the Western Treatment Plant as it takes in sewage from more than half of Melbourne. Other

locations are sampled once a week. “Sampling locations and frequency will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.” Analysis of the wastewater samples is being carried out in specialised laboratories. he virus is concentrated from wastewater, and then its genetic material is extracted and examined, to conirm its presence or absence. “Melbourne Water has been involved in similar sewer epidemiology projects for a number of years that involved testing for a range of pathogenic viruses in treated and untreated wastewater and using that data to inform risk assessments,” Dr Crosbie said.

$56m venue plan for Truganina By Alesha Capone A planning application to build a $56.1 million entertainment and commercial facility, including a gaming venue, residential hotel and apartments in Truganina, has been lodged with Wyndham council. he proposal, for 231 Leakes Road, includes the installation of up to 80 electronic gaming machines (EGMs), and would be managed by the Melbourne Storm Rugby League Club. During construction, 450 full-time equivalent (FTE) direct and indirect jobs would be created. Another 40 FTE ongoing jobs would

be created ater construction. he application includes plans for a six-storey building comprising conference facilities, a 200-seat bistro, café lounge/sports bar, gaming lounge and oices. A seven-storey building with communal facilities, conference centre, oice space, 44 serviced apartments and four penthouses would also be built. A Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal hearing for the planning application has been scheduled for August this year. Wyndham councillors last week voted to support the planning application at VCAT,

with conditions, and without the inclusion of the gaming premises and EGMs. Conditions include that no more than 950 patrons be allowed on the premises at any one time, and that the venue operate between 7am and 2am, except with written consent of council. A council report into the planning application stated that, in accordance with the provisions of the Urban Growth Zone, it was exempt from public notice. However, it noted that a number of community groups had raised concerns related to the “social impacts” of the EGMs proposed for the venue.

Hobsons Bay council has also expressed concerns about the proposal, stated the gaming venue would have “a net negative impact on the Hobsons Bay and Wyndham communities nearest to the site”. A social and economic assessment, submitted along with the planning application, stated that the 80 EGMS would earn an estimated $7.52 million to $8.71 million within the irst 12 months of operation. More than ive years ago, the council issued a planning permit for the development of a business centre, including 70 EGMs, at 231 Leakes Road. hat permit has since expired.

Elvis in a ute rocks retirement village Residents of a Werribee retirement village were all shook up when a drive-through Elvis Presley tribute act visited them on Friday. Lendlease Heathglen Retirement Village manager Asif Chowdry said the show involved performer Eddie James singing Elvis songs from the back of a ute. Mr Chowdry said the ute stopped at various sections of the village, which has 134 units, so that all residents could watch from their front doors or the street. “We had residents out dancing, especially couples who live together, dancing in the

streets,” Mr Chowdry said. He said Mr James performed Elvis songs, took requests, and sang Happy Birthday to a resident who celebrated her birthday on Friday. Mr Chowdry said the Elvis show was part of a pre-Mother’s Day tribute held at the village, organised because many of the village residents were feeling anxious about COVID-19, and had not been able to participate in their regular recreational activities for almost two months. “We’ve had “normal concerts” in the community centre before, but never anything like this,” he said.

Mr Chowdry said managers of Lendlease’s retirement villages had also purchased food staples and frozen meals to provide to residents free-of-charge if they felt worried about visiting supermarkets during the pandemic. He said Heathglen also ran its own TV channel, which had been airing good news stories, cooking shows and comedic programs. “he only thing is, I hope the residents don’t freak out when they see my face on the prime time news,” he joked.

Wyndham has the second highest number of active COVID-19 cases in the state. As of Monday, 11 of 47 conirmed cases in the municipality were active, according to igures released by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Active cases are deined as someone who has tested positive, is currently in isolation and being monitored by the DHHS and who has not yet recovered. Brimbank is the only municipality with a higher number of active cases. On Monday it had 16 active cases of a total 58 conirmed. he total number of coronavirus cases in Victoria was 1494 and 18 people have died. Premier Daniel Andrews said on Monday that more than 160,000 Victorians have been tested for coronavirus, helping provide a better understanding of the way the virus is moving through the community. As a result, social restrictions in Victoria were eased as of midnight Tuesday, with up to 10 people now allowed to gather outdoors and up to ive visitors allowed in people’s homes. “We’re asking Victorians to limit their circle to just family and friends. hat means that when we do have outbreaks and positive cases – and we will – we can test and trace and efectively contain the spread,” Mr Andrews said. Bans have also been lited on outdoor recreational activities including ishing, hiking and golf. he new restrictions and a renewed State of Emergency are in place until May 31. Alesha Capone

Police make boy’s day By Alesha Capone Five year-old Jamison Mitchell was overjoyed when a group of past and present police oicers visited him earlier this month. he police visited the Point Cook youngster ater a photo of him paying tribute to the four oicers who died on the Eastern Freeway on April 22 – Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Constable Glen Humphris, Senior Constable Kevin King and Constable Josh Prestney – went viral on social media. In the photo, which Jamison’s mother Susie Knight posted, the youngster is wearing a police uniform and saluting next to a sign bearing the four oicers names. Jamison said he erected the sign out the front of his family’s home because he was sad about the deaths of the four police oicers. He said he admired police “because they help people’s lives”. Jamison said it was “fun” to meet the police oicers when they visited him on May 1, accompanied by a highway patrol car and motorbike. he oicers gave Jamison a Sergeant’s badge, hat, belt, toy dogs and money boxes. “hey even gave me a police lanyard to get into the clubrooms,” he said. Jamison, who can recite the phonetic alphabet used by emergency services, said he wanted to become a police oicer in the future and hoped to join the Dog Squad, along with his pet dog, Rottweiler Hudson. Ms Knight said the family was “very grateful” to the police who visited Jamison. She said ater Jamison’s photograph went viral, the family of Leading Senior Constable Taylor and partner of Constable Glen Humphris got in touch to express their thanks. Tree register to grow Wyndham council has called on residents to nominate trees for potential inclusion on the municipality’s Signiicant Tree Register. he register is now open for the nomination of trees of signiicance located on private land. All nominated trees will be assessed by a qualiied arborist and historian. Wyndham’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Heather Marcus, said the council was looking to the community to nominate trees that they know and love. “We need to know what trees are important to you, so we can aim to protect these important pieces of our local history,” Cr Marcus said. “here can be many scientiic, social, historic, and aesthetic reasons for your decisions such as including rare species, trees of extraordinary size or unusual features, its unique location or landmark, its spiritual or religious connection, and commemorative trees.” In the past, a peppercorn tree on Menzies Avenue Park, Point Cook has been included on the register for its historic signiicance as a reminder of the impact of soldier settlement at Hughes Farm. A large Eucalyptus tree on Guinane Avenue, Hoppers Crossing was also included because of its size. A 31-year-old Werribee man died in hospital after a two-car collision on Geelong Road, near Watton Street, on Saturday, May 2. A car travelling west on Geelong Road and a silver Daewoo sedan – which was being driven by the Werribee man – collided about 7.35am. The driver of the other car, a 37-year-old man from Tarneit, received minor injuries.

Police are seeking public assistance to identify a man after an incident of arson at Chirnside Crescent Reserve, Laverton about 12.45am on March 2. Police said a man collected a number of large tree branches and used an accelerant to light a ire at the reserve, He continued to add branches to the blaze while screaming in a foreign language, before leaving the park. Police have released images of a man they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries. He is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, about 183cm tall and with short hair. Teachers bring cheer Staf at Werribee Primary School have come together to ilm a music video, to help bring cheer to the community. Performing arts and music teacher Josh Tooth said the video featured classroom and specialist teachers, principals and oice staf singing What a Wonderful World, individually and in small groups. Mr Tooth said he ilmed the video when staf still had the option to work on-site at the school, and uploaded it to the school’s oicial Facebook page. he video has been viewed more than 5000 times since March 24. Mr Tooth said he was inspired to make the music clip, ater seeing a video of Hollywood performers singing Imagine by John Lennon.

“I spotted a similar celebrity video on social media and thought it would be a great idea to bring some positivity to the community,” he said. Mr Tooth said some school staf members had chosen to play musical instruments for the video, rather than sing. “I just liked everybody chipping in and having a go at it,” he said. “We’ve had parents commenting [online] that their kids have gotten a kick out of their teachers doing something fun.” Parent Sarah Klein, whose two daughters attend Werribee Primary School, said the family had loved watching the video.

Point Cook girl Devy, who captured hearts across the nation after singing at the Eurovision – Australia Decides concert earlier this year, has written a song reminding us all to stay safe and healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic. The nine year-old performed alongside singer Kate Miller-Heidke during the Eurovision event on the Gold Coast, which was broadcast on SBS, in February. Devy said that she penned Stay Home – Coronavirus song on the second day of a 21-day songwriting challenge which she has set for herself, during the pandemic lockdown. “I do a lot of singing in my day because music is what makes me happy,” Devy said. “I write songs often because it comes naturally to me and it’s my favourite activity to do.” Devy said her dream was to become a popular pop/rap singer-songwriter. “I hope a lot of people will know me because I could bring a smile to their faces and make their day with my music,” she said. Rate cut move blasted

He described the council’s existing plan to defer rates for some businesses for six months because of the pandemic as “not good enough” and said Wyndham was home to many

migrants and young families who had already lost jobs or businesses in the current crisis. Several Wyndham councillors criticised the move, one comparing the idea to a Monty Python skit. Cr Henry Barlow, who was irst elected to the council in 1997, said: “his would have to be the worst notice of motion I’ve ever heard in my life”. “It looks as if it comes out of a Monty Python sketch.” Cr Barlow said that cutting rates by 10 per cent would give the majority of residents an

extra $2.80 to $4 per week. He said he sent Cr Khan an email on March 31, urging Cr Khan to be transparent about where the cuts would be “otherwise this just looks like blatant electioneering with a council election coming up”. Cr Kim McAliney said Cr Khan had not provided any inancial modelling to support a 10 per cent rate reduction, which would result in “severe cuts” to the council’s capital programs and staf. Cr Peter Maynard said a 10 per cent cut in rates would result in the loss of about $21

million from the council’s annual budget. “his is an ill-conceived and unwarranted notice of motion, that has no sustainability for this council whatsoever,” he said. “I think it’s nothing but a vote-grab.” Cr Tony Hooper described the notice of motion as “grandstanding at best and outright manipulation at worst”. Cr John Gibbons said: “It’s a crazy motion and I oppose it”. Cr Khan was the only councillor to vote in favour of the motion, although Cr Walter Villagonzalo abstained from the inal vote.

Grand plans for Chirnside Park By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has endorsed a $21.15 million master plan to guide Chirnside Park’s development across the next decade. Councillors voted in favour of the master plan, which has been developed with community consultation, at a meeting last week. A major feature of the plan will be the establishment of a new home base for the Werribee Cricket Club and Werribee Junior Cricket Club.

he two clubs will move away from Chirnside Park and Soldiers Reserve to a new site on Alfred Road, to be built within about ive years. Cr Peter Maynard described this as a “win-win” for the cricket club. he Chirnside Park master plan also proposes re-alignments to the Werribee River Trail, away from trees, and widening the path by a minimum of three metres, where possible. Riverbank weed removal, bank stabilisation and revegetation is part of the plan, along with a “nature play area” adjacent to the trail. he historic Bungies Hole area will be

“refurbished” with council to consider options including water play, cultural heritage art elements and educational play opportunities. Food vans and other temporary catering options would also be considered for the area near Bungies Hole. he Werribee Bowls Club’s pavilion will be demolished and replaced with a car park, which will link to Bungies Hole and provide about 42 spaces. A new bowls club facility will be built – possibly a double-storey building – and the club’s north turf green will be replaced with an

undercover synthetic green. At the nearby Chirnside Park oval, council will consider the inclusion of space for up to 500 temporary seats for events. he Werribee Tennis Club’s two hard courts will be replaced with synthetic grass. Cr Mia Shaw said she was delighted that “better aquatic play areas for children and young families” would be installed at the Werribee Outdoor Pool. he council will fund the Chirnside Park upgrades across the next 10 years, applying for state government grants where possible.

Grape harvest a success Despite the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic, Shadowfax Wines has picked and pressed the last fruits for this year’s vintage. Chief winemaker Alister Timms said the Shadowfax team had worked hard to pick fruits at their vineyards in Werribee Park and the Macedon Ranges. Agriculture is deemed an essential service so harvest was able to continue during COVID-19 restrictions. “Obviously we had to make a few changes, it [the pandemic] happened in the middle of harvest,” Mr Timms said. He said the Shadowfax team picked all their grapes by hand, so they arranged separate picking crews and spaced workers further apart to comply with social distancing requirements. “he fruit quality was really good in the end,” Mr Timms said. “We’ve got really lovely new wine in the making in the winery.” Mr Timms said while Shadowfax wine

sales to Melbourne restaurants had decreased since the pandemic started, Wyndham and Macedon Ranges residents had been ordering bottles online and for pick-up. “It’s been really heartening to see people buying our wine, especially Werribee people, it’s what’s kept us going really,” he said, “We’d really like to thank people for that.” Shadowfax’s Werribee restaurant has also closed during the pandemic, but the front-of-house staf have transformed the eatery into a high-quality takeaway. Illegal rubbish dumping soars Wyndham council detected 116 cases of illegally dumped rubbish across the municipality during the irst week of May. And it’s calling on the community to report illegal dumps, as part of eforts to help keep Wyndham clean. Wyndham’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Heather Marcus, said most residents were doing the right thing by booking a free hard waste collection to get rid of their bulky rubbish, but there has been “a spate of illegal dumping in recent weeks”. “During the irst week of May, 806 people

booked hard waste collections, 739 people visited the tip but 116 people dumped their rubbish illegally,” Cr Marcus said. “Council recently issued ines to commercial providers for dumping residents’ rubbish illegally instead of taking it to the tip. People need to make sure they are using reputable companies to dispose of rubbish legally.” Cr Marcus said that if a resident spotted someone illegally dumping rubbish, they should safely gather as much information as possible – such as a car registration number, a company name on the side of the vehicle

Cafe’s handy donation A cafe located near homas Carr College in Tarneit has extended a helping hand to the school during the COVID-19 pandemic. he @7Grams cafe, located at Wyndham Village Shopping Centre, last month ofered to donate more than 40 bottles of hand sanitiser to the college. Cafe team-member Linda said she knew that pupils and teachers would face challenges during the pandemic. Linda said she told the college principal, Craig Holmes, that the cofee shop wanted to “extend a helping hand to the school by donating hand sanitiser to each classroom to assist with COVID-19”. Mr Holmes said that when the cafe’s donation ofer came through, the school was running low on hand sanitiser. “We had ordered through several suppliers but they couldn’t supply these immediately, they were all minimum eight-week lead time,” he said.

Yoga online for kids Point Cook mother Regina Cajucom is using technology to connect young people with yoga during the COVID-19 pandemic. Regina, director of Namaste Yogis, said that before the pandemic regulations came in, she was teaching yoga to children – from the age of two through to high-school students – at YMCAs, early learning centres, kindergartens and schools across the west. With more than 1300 children’s yoga classes under her belt, Regina said that the pandemic lockdown had forced her to “think outside the box” about how she could deliver lessons online. Regina said she wanted to keep classes

interactive, rather than pre-recorded, so she was using the Zoom video conferencing platform. “It’s a good activity for children needing a break from online learning,” she said. “It helps them focus and it instils a sense of calmness.” Regina said her children’s classes incorporated yoga poses, breathing and games. Regina will be running a free Kids Yoga session for primary school-aged children through the Wyndham Together website from 11-11.30am on May 23. Prisoner fears COVID-19 in jail By Alesha Capone A Port Phillip Prison inmate has asked to be released, fearing he could catch the coronavirus while behind bars. he Supreme Court heard Mark Rowson’s application on April 29, and delivered an interim decision on the matter earlier this month. Justice Timothy Ginnane said a risk assessment of the threat of COVID-19 at Port Phillip Prison must be carried out before a inal hearing of Rowson’s application for release

could be held. He said any recommendations as a result of the assessment must be implemented by the prison’s operators, G4S. he court heard Rowson, now 52, has heart disease including chronic atrial ibrillation, angina, asthma, poor blood pressure and decreased renal function. He has also been prone to lung infections and pneumonia throughout his life. Rowson was sentenced in 2018 to ive years, three months and 14 days in prison, ater being convicted of 23 charges of thet and defrauding a sick friend out of $290,976.

In his application, Rowson is seeking orders to release him from Port Phillip Prison in Truganina “because of his health risks, including the risk that he will die, if he is infected with the COVID-19 virus”. Rowson said, if released, he would live at his mother’s house under strict conditions imposed by Corrections Victoria. In his application for release, Mr Rowson claimed there were a number of breaches of hygiene occurring in his prison unit. Supreme Court Justice Timothy Ginnane said authorities have taken a number of protective

measures to address the risk of prisoners catching COVID-19, but that according to Mr Rowson’s evidence, there appeared to be “a gap between what policy anticipates should occur and what is actually occurring, at least in his unit”. Justice Ginnane said that although no cases of COVID-19 have been detected in Victoria’s prisons, the risk was “not insigniicant”. However he said he did not believe Rowson should be released before a risk assessment was carried out because Rowson still has much of his sentence let to serve.

Art prize announced he winner of this year’s $12,000 Wyndham Art Prize has been announced as Bathurst-based Wiradyuri conceptual artist Amala Groom. Wyndham council received more than 350 entries for the annual art competition, with 77 inalists selected. Groom’s work, titled Copywrong, was picked as the major prizewinner by the competition’s three judges. Her sculpture of a fake boomerang, incorporating ochre, acrylic and $2 coins, was described as “provocative, considered and impactful in its simplicity” by one of the competition’s judges, Myles Russell-Cook from the National Gallery of Victoria. He said Groom’s written statement, which accompanied her entry to the Wyndham Art Prize, described Copywrong as an “interrogation into the severe lack of copyright for First Nations materials”. Groom is from the community of indigenous

Australian Wiradjuri people who hail from part of New South Wales. Mr Russell-Cook said that Wyndham Vale artist wani Le Frere has been selected as the winner of the competition’s $5000 Local Emerging Art Prize. Mr Russell-Cook described Le Frere’s work, titled he Final Solution, as “topical and deeply moving in its simplicity”. he Final Solution consists of video footage of an immigrant family, as audio of a speech by former Australian politician Fraser Anning plays over the top. DiCaprios vows to stay open By Alesha Capone he owner of a popular restaurant says that his business will continue operating well into the future, despite a planning application to build a service station at its Hoppers Crossing site being lodged with Wyndham council. DiCaprio Family Restaurant owner and manager Elie Touma said the eatery has been located in Derrimut Road for about 20 years. Wyndham council recently received a planning application for a two-lot subdivision

of the site, including development of a service station, food and drink premises and drive-through convenience restaurant. Mr Touma, who is a tenant of the site, said the planning application had “nothing to do with me”. He said the restaurant’s landlord was looking to potentially sell the property. Mr Touma said that DiCaprios would continue operating from the site until he was told otherwise and if the restaurant was forced to move from its Derrimut Road location, he

planned to re-establish DiCaprios at another site close-by. “We’re part of the community, we’ve been here a long time – we’re almost part of the furniture,” Mr Touma said.

He said the restaurant has been inundated with queries from customers, concerned the restaurant might shut down, since a sign advertising the planning application had been erected on Derrimut Road. He said the restaurant’s management and staf were “very appreciative” to the customers for their kind words. Wyndham council has received 25 objections to the planning application since April 7. he application is also seeking the creation and alteration of access to a Category 1 road.

History brought to life A Wyndham living history group is striving to celebrate Victoria’s artillery and military heritage. he Werribee Half Battery depicts the Victorian Horse Artillery, raised by Sir William Clarke and Andrew Chirnside in conjunction with the Victorian government, in 1889, and commanded by Andrew’s son, Captain Percy Chirnside. he original Werribee Half Battery was based in Werribee Park and Soldiers Reserve in Werribee. Captain Sterling said members of the modern Werribee Half Battery trained about once a month and used the same Martini-Henry carbine rile that the battery members carried. Captain Sterling said the battery’s members provided support at commemorative events, such as Anzac Day, and private celebrations. During this year’s Australia Day event at Kelly Park, they supported the Werribee & District Collectible Vehicle Club.

“We love history, we love military history, we love working with youth development and helping young people along,” Captain Sterling said. Captain Sterling’s wife, Maryanne – who holds the position of Lieutenant in the battery, and is also involved with the Australian Army Cadets – said men and women aged 18 and over were welcome to join the Werribee Half Battery group. “It’s there to give youth an experience they may not get, the chance to do something they otherwise wouldn’t in life,” Lieutenant Sterling said. here is also a group called Friends of the Battery, which supports the half battery in areas such as engineering and logistics. But COVID-19 has turned our world upside down and governments implore everyone to “embrace a new normal”. Stay home, save lives. It’s a simple message – but what happens when your dad is in the inal stages of leukaemia and you live overseas? My family in New Zealand was told by doctors on New Year’s day that dad had months to live.

Any plans to make the Trans-Tasman trip home as oten as possible were shut down in March when COVID-19 sent the nation into lockdown and, for the most part, closed Australia’s borders to the world. Travel is reserved for healthcare aid workers, diplomats, “urgent personal business” and compassionate reasons. Living, working and building a future in Australia, like my parents did when they migrated from Samoa to New Zealand, is no easy feat. Doing that while my dad ights a rare and brutal blood cancer is a burden too heavy for me. Leaving Australia last week in the thick of a pandemic required a few calls to the Health and Human Services Department, the New Zealand consulate and the airline, as well as a letter from the hospital stating my dad’s critical condition. Melbourne airport is an empty, dark and cold place now. About 10 border force oicers crowd the check-in desk ensuring everyone has illed out a form agreeing to self-isolate in a government managed hotel for 14 days in New Zealand. Customs oicers are relaxed, discussing their favourite pork recipes while processing just 40 passengers for the day. Green crosses taped on the loor are two metres apart and the assumption is that everyone is infected. We are ushered onto a tour bus bound for a hotel that nobody will tell us the name of. he New Zealand Army, Police, Navy, border patrol and health department are on site at the

hotel to help enforce strict isolation, social distance and hygiene measures. Home for the next two weeks is a compact hotel room with an en suite and a queen-sized bed. hree meals a day are delivered to your door with one hour of supervised exercise allowed each day. Time is what I have on my hands right now before I can see my dad and, more than anything, that’s all I want.

Call for breast cancer survivors By Alesha Capone A world-renowned Victoria University professor is inviting breast cancer survivors from across the west to participate in a research study. Professor Vasso Apostolopoulos, who grew up in St Albans and now lives in Wyndham, is Pro Vice-Chancellor of Research Partnerships at the university. Professor Apostolopoulos was the irst person in the world to develop the concept of immunotherapy for cancer in the 1990s, which today is used by hundreds of labs around the world. She has been recognised with more than 100 awards, including the Premier’s Award for Medical Research and Young Australian of the Year (Victoria). Professor Apostolopoulos is now conducting a study into the advantages of 24 weeks self-directed physical activity combined with motivational interviewing on mental health, quality of life and improvements to immune cells, in breast cancer survivors. Professor Apostolopoulos said motivational interviewing is a conversational technique used by professionals, to help patients make changes to their eating, alcohol consumption and activity levels. “Being active has been shown to correlate to enhanced quality of life, improved psychological health and boost the immune system which would improve prognosis of breast cancer survivors.” Professor Apostolopoulos said the study started recruiting participants in January, and

was looking for a total of 64 women to take part. “With the fear of COVID-19, I believe that the study will get delayed,” Ms Apostolopoulos said. “But, this study is a self-directed physical activity intervention and even if Australia takes on further restrictions … being part of this study is a way to keep motivated to get up and do some home-based exercises.” Professor Apostolopoulos said anyone in the west region can partake in the study provided they it the criteria. he study’s target group is English-literate breast cancer survivors within three years of diagnosis and at least six months ater breast cancer treatments, who may be undergoing hormonal treatments and/or Herceptin treatment. Connect through sport Reclink Australia has launched a project to bring sport into people’s homes and yards during the coronavirus pandemic. he not-for-proit organisation, which is based in Werribee, aims to help disadvantaged Australians through sports and arts programs. Founder Peter Cullen said Reclink was aiming to foster a sense of joy and togetherness in the community with its latest initiative – giving people sports equipment to use at home. Reclink has appealed for Wyndham residents to donate footballs or soccer balls to the program, which has been named Reclink Connect. Mr Cullen said a donation of $5 could also assist Reclink to buy a ball for families. He said that during the past 30 years of

Casaccio Egg Farm sets a crackin’ pace Casaccio Egg Farm might have been Wyndham’s “hidden little secret” since 1966 – but the COVID-19 pandemic has made it more popular and essential than ever. he family-owned and run business has a proud history in the local community, spanning 54 years. From humble beginnings with a small lock of 2000 hens in their backyard farm, Casaccio Egg Farm has expanded its locks and developed environmentally-friendly automated hen-houses, free-range systems and a state-of-the-art grading loor. Managing director Lina CasaccioSfetcopoulos, a third generation egg farmer, says word of the farm’s products spread and demand sky-rocketed earlier this year at the peak of the COVID-19 emergency. “When the coronavirus hit two months ago and people went into panic buying mode, we were inundated with customers at our farm produce store in Werribee,” Lina said. She says new customers locked to the farmgate store ater a Facebook post, encouraging people to shop for eggs locally at the farm, went viral. “he post got shared out nearly 200 times and our ‘hidden little secret’ egg farm was no longer Melbourne’s best kept secret,” Lina says. “We couldn’t keep up with the demand and had long queues of people waiting to get their hands on our eggs. “We want to thank our local community for their continued support … We endeavor to provide you with the best quality eggs and a positive experience when you walk through the door.” Lina says the business is doing its best to keep up with demand and has launched a convenient, safe and contactless online delivery service.

Customer care at forefront A medical emergency led Billy and his wife Maissa to set up A1 Tyres in Werribee ive years ago – now they are helping to keep customers on the road throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. he family-run business specialises in tyre itting, repairs, wheel balancing, new and used tyres, batteries and car servicing. Billy has been in the tyre industry for 18 years and opened A1 Tyres in 2015 ater life took an unexpected turn. “In 2014, I was to be married in June and travel to Europe for my honeymoon – a trip of a lifetime,” he says. “All my dreams came to an end in March when I was diagnosed with a tumor in my lower jaw. “Ater multiple surgeries throughout the year, I would be unable to work for eight months. “Upon my return to work, my previous employer of 12 years said I was no longer needed. I had no income. “In 2015, Maissa and I decided to get a loan and start our own small business in the tyre industry.” A1 Tyres’ mechanics have vast experience with a variety of makes and models, and uphold the highest standard of excellence. Maissa says safety is the number one priority. “We are a family-owned business, we can relate to the everyday Australian,” she says. “Billy is always the irst and last point of contact. Nissan recently stepped into the hairy-chested premium ute ring, up against the likes of the Ford Ranger Wildtrak, HSV SportsCat, Mazda Boss and Toyota Rogue, Dodge Ram and HSV Silverado – with the Navara N-Trek Warrior. Unlike these pickup prize ighters, the Nissan truck is ofering something diferent – input from Aussie automotive product development and engineering consultancy Premcar – to take on the toughest conditions demanded by owners in the dual cab 4x4 ute market. Enhancements in wheel, tyre and suspension come up with better ground clearance and improved ride and handling, while wider stance, redesigned front end, plus new Cooper all-terrain rubber, complete a range of rugged visual cues. A carryover from the basic N-Trek black standard features, the Warrior includes fender lares, alloy sports bar, headlamp bezels, side steps, rear vision mirror caps with dark orange accent, rear bumper, front grille, door handles and roof rails. he Navara N-Trek Warrior comes in two versions powered by Nissan’s 2.3-litre four-cylinder twin-turbo engine, mated with either a six-speed manual, or seven-speed automatic transmission. he test vehicle was the latter, which would set back the buyer $65,490, plus on-road costs. he manual Warrior comes in at $62,990, plus ORC.

Summing up Who would have thought dual-cab utes would have become the best-selling vehicles in Australia? With this in mind, Nissan has a Warrior that could rattle a few of the enemy.
