Sunbury could become a dumping ground for contaminated soil from the West Gate Tunnel project if a proposal is given the green light. Waste management and recycling company Hi-Quality Group submitted a proposal to the West Gate Tunnel project’s consortium in March to expand the existing Sunbury Eco-Hub on Sunbury Road. Hi-Quality Group is proposing to build and operate a temporary facility that will treat and “safely” dispose of soil excavated from the West Gate Tunnel project in 58 engineered containment bays. If the proposal is given the green light, the soil from the tunnel project would be transported to the bays at the Sunbury site, where the soil will be held for assessment and testing. According to Hi-Quality Group, once tested, water from the soil will be drained and put through a water treatment plant. Hi-Quality Group expects construction to begin this year if the proposal is approved. he irst truckloads of soil from the West Gate Tunnel project would arrive at Sunbury “several” months later. he temporary facility could operate for up to two years. In a statement released by Hi-Quality Group, the company said the Sunbury Eco-Hub, which is owned by Hi-Quality Group, is certiied as a “best practice site for waste management and recovery.” “It has been approved for recycling, landill and the processing of contaminated materials for more than 20 years,” the statement read. “he site is identiied as a hub of state signiicance for waste management. “Hi-Quality Group has undertaken detailed environmental impact reviews, which showed storage and reuse of the soil will not cause any unacceptable impact or leave any detrimental environmental legacy, either on site or to the local community.” Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn said he was outraged at the possibility of “foul substances” being dumped in Sunbury or Bulla. “Material which is dangerous, which is toxic, which is poisonous, we do not want it here,” he said. New Gisborne’s Mavis Arkinstall enjoyed being the centre of attention last week for a very special reason. The Warrina Aged Care resident celebrated her 105th birthday on May 8, surrounded by family and messages of love. “It’s very special, turning 105,” she said. “I never dreamed I would make it this far. It’s nice being the centre of attention once in a while.” Ms Arkinstall grew up in Kyneton and was the eldest of six children. At age 16, she left school to become a nurse at the Epworth Hospital but her career was cut short when her mother died and she returned to Kyneton to help her father raise her ive siblings. She then met and married the love of her life, Harry Arkinstall. The couple shared 63 years of marriage before Mr Arkinstall died. Together, they raised three children, Ann, Ian and Graham. To celebrate her birthday, staff at the aged care centre organised a high tea. “My immediate family joined me, with my extended family visiting me through the windows,” Ms Arkinstall said. “Nothing has ever stopped me from celebrating my birthday with my family and neither will coronavirus. “Family is my world, we have always been very close. They keep me going and make me want to live to 106.” Ms Arkinstall credited her long life to being around family, eating healthy, staying active and her love of the Essendon Football Club. She received cards, letters and drawings from children around the world, after nursing director Tara Chandrasegran put a call out on social media. Jessica Micallef

Coronavirus and your mental health Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group (MRSPAG) is reaching out to the local community during this diicult and uncertain time. Many of us may be feeling higher levels of worry and anxiety, and all of us have lots of questions – Are our friends and family safe? What will happen to us if we get sick with the virus? How do we cope with job uncertainty and inancial stress? Will things return to normal? MRSPAG Chair, Annie Rowland said we are certainly in unchartered territory. “This is a unique experience and it is really normal to be feeling concerned and stressed,” Ms Rowland said. “We know there are going to be more community members who will be feeling vulnerable and who may need to access mental health treatment and support at this time.” Ms Rowland encouraged those in the community who are feeling well and strong to look out for others. “If you are feeling well and able to support someone, we greatly encourage you to reach out. A phone call, text message, or note in the letterbox can be all it takes to let them know you are there. We also hope everyone knows it is okay to reach out and ask for help if you need it”. MRSPAG is a group of community members and local service providers who work together to prevent suicide in the Macedon Ranges. Virus cases still on the increase he number of COVID-19 cases across Hume and the Macedon Ranges has increased to 48 across the two municipalities. According to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), there were 42 cases in Hume on Monday, six of those cases were active. In the Macedon Ranges, there was one conirmed case last week, bringing the total number of cases to eight across the region. In Victoria, there were 1487 conirmed

identiied through a testing blitz. he state’s chief health oicer Brett Sutton said last week’s increase should remind Victorians not to become complacent. “While we have been lattening the curve, our battle against COVID-19 is far from over,” he said. “Victorian’s have done a remarkable job so far sticking to the coronavirus restrictions and staying home has saved lives.” Mr Sutton is urging all Victorians who may be experiencing mild cold and lu symptoms to get tested at one of the state’s 43 coronavirus testing clinics.
Community testing clinic opens A coronavirus testing clinic has been set up in Sunbury. Sunbury Community Health has partnered with Western Health to open the clinic at the former Sunbury Lions Community Aged Care site on Timins Street. Sunbury Community Health chief executive Phillip Ripper said the clinic, which opened on May 4, tested more than 60 people during its irst day of operation. “he clinic has received a fantastic response,” he said. “We had people queuing from 9am before the doors opened. “We’re extremely pleased with the initial response. Although there was a reasonable waiting time when we irst opened, we are conident that the initial rush will slow and waiting times will come down.” Mr Ripper said Western Health nurses are currently testing aged care workers, health workers, people with chronic diseases and anyone over the age of six displaying the mildest of cold and lu symptoms. But he said the testing criteria could very well change to include asymptomatic cases. “hat would be the next step,” he said. “he criteria changes regularly so it’s always good to check before you come.” Nurses at the clinic will be wearing the “appropriate protective equipment” and no doctor referral or bookings are necessary to be tested. “hey [nurses] are all highly trained,” Mr Ripper said. “High standards of infection control will be maintained and measures to ensure physical distancing within and around the facility will be ensured. “We are very proud of the Sunbury community and people’s willingness to get on board and be tested. “he way the community has come together and responded to this crisis has been fantastic.” he Sunbury clinic is one of 43 COVID-19 testing sites operating across the state, including

Western Health executive director of operations Natasha Toohey said any new local testing clinic was a step in the right direction to get more tests done. “Western Health welcomes the opportunity to broaden access to COVID-19 testing to our

he Municipal Association of Victoria is calling for the Victorian local government elections to be deferred for 12 months. he elections were due to be held in October, but MAV president Coral Ross said with COVID-19 restrictions in place, a deferment is needed. “We are calling on the state to legislate the deferral by no later than the end of May so as to avoid unnecessary cost to councils and to provide the community with certainty,” Cr Ross said. “We acknowledge that there are both pros and cons to deferring the election, but in our view the pros far outweigh the cons. “In the current climate, community health and safety must be the overriding consideration.” She said that holding an election at such a time would be irresponsible. “Councils do not want to put residents, council candidates, electoral oicers and scrutineers at risk by proceeding with the elections this year. “Given the economic implications of coronavirus for councils, it is also critical that councils stay focused on organisational recovery and future planning, rather than election campaigning.” A 12 month deferral will allow for fairer elections and also enable the state and councils to implement important reforms provided for by the Local Government Act.

Outdoor fun for Woodend kinder kids

One building for all By Jessica Micallef A one-stop-shop for allied health services has been made available at Kyneton’s Cobaw Community Health. Construction started on a new building a year ago, ater Cobaw Community Health received a $9.7 million grant through the state government’s Regional Health Infrastructure Fund. he new building, which will replace the main oice at the Kyneton site, will ofer services including counselling, family and parenting support, homelessness support, LGBTIQA+ groups, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech radiology. Visiting services including the Centre for Non-Violence and Centrelink will be available.
Cobaw Community Health chief executive Margaret McDonald said the new building created a “welcoming and lexible space” for everyone who visits and uses their services. “his vital part of local infrastructure gives us the capacity to provide a greater range of allied health and community services, with signiicant increases in clinical spaces to meet the increases in service demand,” she said. “All of Cobaw’s services will be available in the new building.” Ms McDonald said the exterior design relected the local history, architecture, lora and landscape of the Macedon Ranges. “he grey cladding references the bluestone rock and brickwork found extensibly in the area, as well as the many farm sheds seen in towns across the region,” she said.
“he curves of the brick arches are a nod to the shopfronts of the old buildings, as well as to hills of the local environment. he gold glass references Kyneton’s history as a service town for the goldields. “he internal colours relect the colours of the natural landscape of the hills, rivers, trees and earth. “he building is clearly visible as you come of the freeway at Kyneton and the entrance faces the Kyneton Health site.” Cobaw Community Health sites in Kyneton, Romsey and Woodend are currently closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. Children at Woodend Kindergarten have a new inclusive outdoor learning space to explore. he outdoor play area was funded through the state government’s Pick My Project initiative, as well as contributions from the government’s Children’s Facilities Capital Program, Macedon Ranges council and the kinder. Construction of the play area was completed in time for the start of term two. Macedon MP Mary-Anne homas said while three-year-old kindergarten classes are currently suspended in the Macedon Ranges because of COVID-19, Woodend Kinders’ four-year-olds are able to enjoy the new play area. “As a Pick My Project winner, it’s clear that this upgrade of the Woodend Kindergarten means so much to many in our community,” she said. “Although not every child enrolled at the kinder can experience this wonderful new play space right now, I am sure it will be loved by everyone once all children are able to return.” Woodend Kindergarten also received $6193 as part of the Inclusive Kindergarten Funding program, which was used to purchase sensory equipment. A man has had his car impounded for a month after allegedly driving 49 kilometres over the speed limit in Tylden earlier this month. Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol oficers intercepted the motorist after the car was allegedly detected at 149km/h in a 100km/h zone.

Five mature cypress trees at Gisborne’s Gardiner Reserve will be removed due to safety concerns. An independent arborist inspected 21 trees surrounding the sports oval at the reserve in 2018 as part of Macedon Ranges council’s annual tree audit program. The arborist reported 13 of the trees posed safety concerns and eight trees have since been removed. The remaining ive trees will be removed in coming months.

A promise of romance A Macedon Ranges author has joined with three other writers to create an anthology of romance stories. Romsey’s Sarah Fiddelaers is one of the co-authors of Easter Promises – a collection of four stories set in the irst half of the 20th century. Fiddelaers said each story was about love, hope, humour and faith. “he stories feature strong women overcoming the obstacles of their time to pursue their dreams, and, of course, ind love,” she said. he anthology follows Fiddelaers’ irst novel which was shortlisted for last year’s Richell Prize for Emerging Writers. “It came about ater my co-authors and I met at the Romance Writers of Australia

We were all polishing and submitting our irst novels and decided to give ourselves a project to keep our minds busy during the long wait between submission and response from publishers,” Fiddelaers said. “here is absolutely something for everyone. Macedon Ranges council is completing a condition survey of footpaths across the municipality using specialised camera-equipped vehicles. The cameras take videos and laser measurements of the footpaths and kerbs. The cameras are focused on the roads and no footage of commercial, residential or private properties or structures is taken or retained. The condition survey will be carried out until mid-May. Mount memorial gets upgrade By Jessica Micallef he legacy of veterans will be preserved at Mount Macedon’s Memorial Cross Reserve. he reserve’s committee will receive a $50,000 grant to upgrade the site. he funding forms part of the state government’s four grant streams to build and repair memorials, preserve stories and maintain the wellbeing of veterans. he money will go towards a detailed heritage analysis to preserve and enhance the site’s commemorative features.
More stories of local World War II veterans will also be depicted at the site, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II in September. Macedon MP Mary-Anne homas said while the reserve was a major attraction in the Macedon Ranges and had a long history of community use, an increase in visitor numbers had put pressure on the reserve’s environment and infrastructure. “his is terriic news for our community and for everyone that has worked so hard to ensure the reserve continues to welcome visitors well
into the future,” she said. “he reserve has been attracting record visitors in recent years. “his means funding can cater for those bigger crowds and preserve the site for generations to come.” Veterans Minister Robin Scott said improvements at the site meant locals and visitors would further enjoy “one of the signiicant war memorials in regional Victoria”. “his is about preserving the history of our state and ensuring that we never forget the great sacriice our veterans made,” he said.

A dream scholarship Zac Grima started playing soccer at Sunbury United Soccer Club in 2007. Now the 19-year-old is looking forward to taking his soccer talents international. Mr Grima received a scholarship to play soccer and study kinesiology full time at the Louisiana State University of Alexandria in the US. he Sunbury resident said the opportunity to play overseas was a dream come true. “It’s exciting,” he said. “Any chance to play overseas, I’ll take it any day. It’s more exciting than anything else. “I love travelling and this just opens the doors for that.” In February 2018, sports management and promotion organisation Global Sports Recruitment conducted soccer trials across Australia. “If they thought any player was capable of getting a scholarship, they [Global Sports
Recruitment] would touch base with you,” Mr Grima said. “hey spoke to me about it then they promoted me to colleges all around the US.” Mr Grima received ofers from eight US colleges in October last year, but picked Louisiana State University of Alexandria. While the keen soccer player is unsure of when he will be able to make the journey over to the US because of strict coronavirus restrictions, Mr Grima is looking forward to the journey ahead of one day becoming a professional soccer player. “I’m meant to be there at the end of July,” Mr Grima said. “he coach is hopeful but I am not sure. “It’s the dream goal [to play soccer professionally]. Raising the rainbow lag By Jessica Micallef Cobaw Community Health will show its colours and support for the LGBTIQA+ community. To celebrate International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia (IDAHBOIT), the health service will host a virtual raising of the rainbow lag on Sunday. Cobaw Community Health chief executive Margaret McDonald said COVID-19 restrictions would not dampen the health service’s plans to commemorate the annual day. “We ly the rainbow lag each year on May
17 to raise awareness of the discrimination LGBTIQA+ members of our community still face,” she said. “For the past four years, we’ve had a public raising event. But this year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are making sure that we’re being very creative in the online space.” While there are plans to raise rainbow lags at sites across the Macedon Ranges, including council oices, Cobaw Community Health is encouraging locals to gather online on the day to watch the virtual lag-raising on social media. “Raising the lag lets the LGBTIQA+ members of our community know they are
seen, supported and valued,” Ms McDonald said. “In this period of increased social isolation, actions like this are not only matters of pride, but matters of necessity.” In the lead-up to the day, Cobaw Community Health is asking residents to email a photo of themselves displaying the rainbow colours in the form of a lag, badge, scarf, beanie, socks or nail polish. Photos will be shared in the week leading up IDAHOBIT across Cobaw’s social media pages. he online lag raising will take place on Sunday, May 17 at 11am. Plenty of kidding around Life at Edgar’s Mission is twice as nice for rescue goat Morticia, following the birth of her twin kids. Morticia gave birth to the twins – Mozzarella and Goulash – on April 30. Edgar’s Mission founder and director Pam Ahern said the birth was a “beautiful Mother’s Day story”. “It’s [the birth] lited everyone’s spirits,” she said. Morticia arrived at Edgar’s Mission earlier this year with fellow goat Gomez. She was about six weeks pregnant when she arrived at the Lanceield animal sanctuary. “Her and the other goat were in a pound,” Ms Ahern said. “Sadly, the fate of farm animals in pounds is not very nice. So the pound rang us and asked if we wanted them. “We had her scanned and we did know she

was having twins so we were very excited.” Ms Ahern said Morticia had “no trouble giving birth” to the twins. “She’s a really good mum, she’s cleaned them up well,” she said. “hey are happy and healthy little bubs. “he more time you spend with them, their personality really comes out. “he little boy [Goulash] is really cheeky. Guiding the way through COVID-19 By Esther Lauaki Wherever Emma Jago goes – Valmai takes the lead. he 21-year-old law student and her guide dog have been inseparable since the young labrador came to live with Emma in her western suburbs home a year ago. Emma is one of the more than 1200 people with low vision or blindness that Guide Dogs Victoria helps each year. “When I irst got Valmai, everything became easier because I now have a literal set of eyes,” she said. “Valmai is my irst guide dog, and before her, I was unsure about inding my way around unfamiliar locations, especially while following a map. “Valmai and I can both make mistakes and be unsure, but between us, we manage just ine and can basically go anywhere and survive. “She always makes me smile by pushing her head against me, wagging her tail enthusiastically, rolling on the loor on her back, or half sitting on me.” In a normal week, the outgoing duo attends RMIT University city campus most days, harmonica lessons at Footscray and woodwork in Kensington but life is much quieter these days. COVID-19 restrictions on outdoor activities have posed a unique set of challenges for those with guide dogs. “Valmai is a dog with much attitude, and is oten too smart for her own good,” Emma said. “She is into everything and loves to chew. “Our biggest problem is occupying such an energetic dog as she becomes bored without entertainment very easily. “We still go out for walks, and do activities such as catching the train or bus, walking

Life’s never bin better Sharon Cutajar donned some Darth Vader apparel.
Putting the bins out has never looked so good. Star Weekly put a call out on Facebook last week, asking for photos of residents who have dressed up to take out their bins out during the coronavirus pandemic. We were overwhelmed with the response and loved seeing all your photos. Resident Sally Hanley said that she dressed up as a dinosaur to put out her bins. Ms Hanley said her father passed away on March 1, when the pandemic started to hit home across the world. “Since the irst of March, nothing has been right, the whole world is upside down, and people are freaking out,” she said. “Two of my friends, who don’t know each other, saw the bin isolation page on Facebook and they challenged me to wear my T-Rex costume to put the bin out.” Ms Hanley said her husband took photos of the occasion, while her daughter recorded it. “I work in childcare at Wallaby Childcare Centre, and I’m a student with Dynamic Performers Australia, so these days I’m not exactly shy, unlike in my younger years,” she said. “I like to make people smile, and if I can help someone forget their troubles for just a moment, then me dressing as a T-Rex was totally worth it.”

Seeds of learning Salesian College students have brought the farm to their homes. About 65 year 7 students studying agriculture at the Sunbury college have had to adapt and learn how to harvest and grow produce from their own home using pea seeds sent to them in the mail. College principal Mark Brockhus said the school’s agriculture curriculum culture was very hands-on and couldn’t just be taught online. “We run sheep and cattle, giving students the opportunity to work with Simmental [cattle] and Corriedale and Poll Dorset studs [sheep],” he said. “We also have a horticulture program where students can plant and cultivate seeds and vegetables.” At home, students have been investigating how plants grow and what those plants need
for best production. “hey will then need to germinate the pea seeds and when their seedlings have developed, decide on one variable or condition they want to change,” Mr Brockhus said. “hey will measure how the plants grow and the efect of this change variable.” Mr Brockhus said while home learning had presented a challenge, he was proud of how teachers, students and their families had adapted to remote learning. “Our students have been able to stay motivated and engaged, even though they aren’t in a classroom setting or on our property,” he said. When home is no longer home Star Weekly reporter Esther Lauaki had to return to New Zealand for a family emergency. She is now in strict quarantine. his is her story.
Home doesn’t feel like home anywhere any more. I’ve travelled to New Zealand so many times in the past eight years that I could walk the length of Auckland Airport with my eyes closed. But COVID-19 has turned our world upside down and governments implore everyone to “embrace a new normal”. Stay home, save lives. It’s a simple message – but what happens when your dad is in the inal stages of leukaemia and you live overseas? My family in New Zealand was told by doctors on New Year’s day that dad had months to live.

Any plans to make the Trans-Tasman trip home as oten as possible were shut down in March when COVID-19 sent the nation into lockdown and, for the most part, closed Australia’s borders to the world. Travel is reserved for healthcare aid workers, diplomats, “urgent personal business” and compassionate reasons. Living, working and building a future in Australia, like my parents did when they migrated from Samoa to New Zealand, is no easy feat. Doing that while my dad ights a rare and brutal blood cancer is a burden too heavy for me. Leaving Australia last week in the thick of a pandemic required a few calls to the Health and Human Services Department, the New Zealand consulate and the airline, as well as a letter from the hospital stating my dad’s critical condition. Melbourne airport is an empty, dark and cold place now. About 10 border force oicers crowd the check-in desk ensuring everyone has illed out a form agreeing to self-isolate in a government managed hotel for 14 days in New Zealand. Customs oicers are relaxed, discussing their favourite pork recipes while processing just 40 passengers for the day. Duty Free and the retail stores are all closed and only the sound of suitcase wheels on linoleum and murmurs in the distance echo

through the staf bypass corridor you have to walk through to get to your gate. he light was a speedy three and a half hours with no air traic and good lying conditions into Auckland where I was born and raised. An idyllic Kiwi childhood of breakfasts at the beach, jandals, walking to the corner dairy with a dozen cousins, Jelly-Tips and kina (sea urchin) ishing. But in this post COVID world, warm smiles
are hidden behind surgical masks, there are no handshakes or hugs – just a health check and a sterile, “Welcome home Ma’am”. Green crosses taped on the loor are two metres apart and the assumption is that everyone is infected. We are ushered onto a tour bus bound for a hotel that nobody will tell us the name of. he New Zealand Army, Police, Navy, border patrol and health department are on site at the
hotel to help enforce strict isolation, social distance and hygiene measures. Home for the next two weeks is a compact hotel room with an en suite and a queen-sized bed. hree meals a day are delivered to your door with one hour of supervised exercise allowed each day. Time is what I have on my hands right now before I can see my dad and, more than anything, that’s all I want.

As the world continues to battle Covid-19, the pandemic has been compared to the Spanish lu outbreak of more than 100 years ago. hat pandemic, which emerged at the end of the First World War in 1918, killed more than 50 million people worldwide. he virus spread around the world as WWI soldiers returned home. In Australia, despite quarantine measures, around 40 per cent of the population fell ill and around 15,000 people died. he irst case of the Spanish lu in Melbourne appeared in January 1919. In the western suburbs, the local newspapers of the time were illed with articles about community eforts to ight the illness and – sadly - many obituaries, as people died. On February 8, 1919, he Independent newspaper reported the Footscray Technical School in Nicholson Street would be used as a hospital. More than 150 beds were purchased and Red Cross workers supplied bedding and other requisites. he city’s health oicer, Dr J. Ramsay Webb, paid a “warm tribute” to Footscray residents for helping to set up the hospital. Another news story said entire families in the Footscray area had come down with the Spanish lu, and “without assistance from their friends and neighbours there is but little hope for them”.

he “ladies of Yarraville” were praised for helping stricken households. In nearby Williamstown, according to an article by he Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, “hotels were closed, trains were deserted and public entertainment cancelled”. On February 16, 1919, the Werribee Shire Banner reported that three cases of the Spanish lu had been recorded by the local health oicer. he Werribee Mechanics Institute was used as an isolation hospital and 400 residents were vaccinated within a week. he article said several events had been cancelled, such as the Werribee Farmers Picnic. he Banner said that church services were to be held outside, and if mass was held indoors due to inclement weather, parishioners were advised to wear facemasks. he Melton Express ran a story about the Shire of Bacchus Marsh’s medical health oicer, John Pollock, who warned that any household which did not report a case of inluenza to the council would face a ine of 20 pounds (£20). A well-known resident of the west who died of the Spanish lu was Lieutenant Louis Edwin Trawin, who lived in Footscray. At the age of 19, he enlisted for WWI and was allocated to the 7th Battalion. He served in Gallipoli and France, and was shot three times. Sadly, Lou died in the Spanish Flu epidemic in April 1919.
