The mum-of-three is preparing for a relaxing day alongside children James, 10, Luke, 8, and Emma 5. “It will probably be a similar day to usual. I get coffee and breakfast made for me and brought to me in bed, and I won’t do any housework or house duties during the day,” Kat said. “We usually meet up with the grandmothers for brunch. We’ll probably FaceTime at some point instead, which will be nice.”
Budget ills missing links By Laura Michell A missing link in Sunbury’s road network and a multi-level carpark in Evans Street are just two of the local projects included in Hume council’s proposed 2020-21 budget. Councillors adopted the drat budget last Monday, proposing to spend $106 million on capital works projects next inancial year. he drat budget includes an average rates rise of two per cent. Cr Drew Jessop said the council is proposing to spend $1 million to extend Yirrangan Road
in Jacksons Hill to Watsons Road, “inally”, while there are also plans to redevelop the former council oices in Macedon Street. he drat budget also includes $6.3 million for new and upgraded pavilions at nine reserves including Sunbury’s Boardman Reserve and Langama Park. he council is also planning to spend $3.87 million on the development and implementation of master plans at eight reserves including Mt Holden Reserve, Sunbury Park and McMahon Recreation Reserve. Cr Leigh Johnson said there was $500,000 set
aside for planning for the Evans Street carpark. “I know without a doubt that the multi-deck carpark is something that the community of Sunbury have certainly been talking about for a long, long time … we look forward to seeing that take shape,” he said. he council also plans to spend at least $5.5 million to help the community respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hume mayor Carly Moore said the budget was an investment in Hume’s growing community. “We are moving ahead with the biggest infrastructure program in our history
and boosting funding to essential day-to-day services to help respond to the impacts of the coronavirus,” she said. he budget also lags more than 500 projects which will need to be completed over the next four years, including expanding the Hume Global Learning Centre at Broadmeadows and redeveloping the former Craigieburn Leisure Centre. “It is an important time to continue to invest in our community,” Cr Moore said. New provider for youth service By Laura Michell A Macedon Ranges home and community care program for young people will be taken over by Benetas ater the council decided to scrap the program. Councillors voted in August, 2019 to stop providing the Home and Community Care Program for Younger People (HACCPYP) from July 1, 2020. he decision was in response to reforms in the aged and disability services sector. he program provides services for young people with a disability, chronic illness or short-term health needs that do not meet the

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) criteria. Benetas will be responsible for the program from July 1, ater being selected to deliver the services locally by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Macedon Ranges council chief executive Margot Stork said the council would work with Benetas and DHHS to transition 19 clients.
She said despite the change, it would be business as usual in terms of the delivery of services to HACCPYP clients. “Clients and families remain our key priority and will continue to receive individualised support during the transition process,” Ms Stork said. “We are committed to managing this change in a respectful and sensitive way. “DHHS selected Benetas through an established process that protects the interests of clients. Benetas has a strong history in providing home care services and shares council’s commitment to putting clients at the centre of service delivery.”
Ms Stork said the decision to withdraw from the HACCPYP would allow the council to invest in other services. “HACCPYP provides service to a small number of people in a regulated environment,” she said. “With other agencies delivering this service locally, we are better placed to invest in council’s other health and wellbeing priorities including social connection, improving infrastructure and attracting more services to the shire. “Regardless of changes to HACCPYP services, council will always have a role in advocating and planning for the health and wellbeing of residents.”

Meal plan pays thanks A new initiative is striving to help Melbourne’s struggling hospitality businesses stay aloat while also providing meals for hardworking frontline medical staf. Operation thank you: Frontline meals launched two weeks ago as a way for people to show their gratitude to the healthcare and emergency services workers helping keep us safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Founder Natasha Oommen said the idea behind Operation thank you: Frontline meals was that people donated money to pay for meals for frontline workers.
he meals are then made and delivered by struggling hospitality businesses, helping them keep their businesses going. he initiative has established a pilot program at Northern Hospital, providing meals to the fever, respiratory and emergency departments. A number of businesses including North Fitzroy’s Moroccan Soup Bar, Atlantic Group, Edge Hospitality, Dolce Gusto in Niddrie and Heart Attack and Vine in Carlton have already signed up to make and deliver meals. Ms Oommen hopes to expand the program to other frontline services in the coming weeks.
She said doctors, nurses, healthcare workers, police and paramedics were putting themselves at risk of infection daily to protect the community from COVID-19 and would need “good food” to sustain their eforts. “I just wanted to do something to help” Ms Oommen said. “Food is such an integral part of our lives and this marriage of hospitality and frontline care seemed like a simple way to help.” Donations can be made via www. frontlinemealsmelb.org
Requests for a COVID-19 testing clinic in Sunbury have been ignored by the federal government, according to McEwen MP Rob Mitchell. Mr Mitchell said he recommended the establishment of a testing clinic in Sunbury to the federal government in March, following the announcement that 100 pop-up fever clinics would be set up across the country within six weeks. He said the request was backed by the Primary Health Network and medical staf, but to date, the federal government has overlooked Sunbury for a clinic. “In another Sunbury snub, we had local accredited medical facilities available who were ready, willing and able to immediately start up but this was rejected by the Morrison Liberal government,” he said. he pop-up fever clinics aim to deal with people who have milder COVID-19 symptoms, easing pressure on hospitals. Each clinic, stafed by doctors and nurses, would be able to see up to 75 patients a day over six months. “Across the board, people are examining the detail of government announcements, and they’re inding something diferent to what they were promised,” Mr Mitchell said. “he Morrison government has turned its back yet again on our community.” Laura Michell

Drugs charges Two men have been charged with possessing a drug of dependence after being stopped by police in Woodend on April 26. The men – a 37-year-old from Ardeer and a 38-year-old from Delahey – came to the attention of police about 3am. Police allegedly found a quantity of drugs during a search of the men’s car.

Ducks in danger A Sunbury resident is calling for greater education about the dangers of feeding ducks. Alejandra Diaz said she had noticed an increase in the number of people feeding bread to the ducks and other wild birds at Sunbury’s Spavin Drive Lake in recent weeks. Ms Diaz said feeding bread to the ducks was damaging to the lake’s ecosystem. “We love to see the birds – they are beautiful – but if we want to continue seeing them, we have to let them ind food themselves,” she said. “hey were not born eating bread.” Ms Diaz said feeding the ducks and birds created a number of issues. “It creates habits and stops them from inding natural food. It also creates vermin and algae,

which is toxic,” she said. “I don’t want to see the birds disappearing or getting sick.” Ms Diaz said there was a small sign, near one of the entrances to the lake, warning people not to feed the ducks. However, she said additional signs needed to be put up around the lake and at the nearby playground. In the past, Hume council has urged the community not to feed native birds and has information on its website about the dangers. According to the council, feeding ducks increases bird populations and can cause aggression among the birds.

Calls for help ‘overwhelming’ By Laura Michell More than 350 businesses have applied for inancial support from Hume council to help get them through the COVID-19 pandemic. he council is ofering $1 million as part of its Quick Response Support Grants for small to medium-sized businesses. he grants are designed to provide immediate relief for businesses afected by the coronavirus crisis and can help pay for costs such as e-commerce platforms, website development, digital marketing and promotion, product
development, staf training and utility bills. Hume council planning and development director Michael Sharp said the response from businesses had been “overwhelming”. He said the council received applications from a range of industries including manufacturing, retail, food and hospitality, freight, and beauty, professional and business services. “Applications are currently being assessed by council and we hope to notify successful recipients over the next few weeks,” Mr Sharp said. he council is also striving to help businesses

Singer inds his inner strength Taylor Sheridan started writing his latest song a year ago – well before the coronavirus crisis hit. But the Macedon Ranges’ singer’s latest single couldn’t be more relevant. Sheridan’s When the Demons Come was released on Friday and shines a light on mental health. he Kyneton-born singer and songwriter started writing the song following a friend’s battle with mental health. “It made me put a mirror up to where I was at and how I was doing mentally,” Sheridan said. “To be honest, I found myself running a bit rough. Maybe I knew subconsciously that something wasn’t right. “I started writing this song and it was really helpful … luckily I had an artistic outlet.” While mental health is a topic that few people are willingly talk about, Sheridan said he felt he would have been doing himself a “disservice” if he didn’t open up about his experience. “As an artist, you are supposed to investigate these things and these feelings,” he said. “I think I would have been doing a huge disservice to myself if I didn’t go down that rabbit hole.” However, the Gisborne resident said it wasn’t until he began sharing When the Demons Come with friends and family that he was absolutely certain it was a topic he wanted to pursue. “When I would share the song with people, especially people close to me, right away, a conversation would be started.” Sheridan hopes When the Demons Come will help “spark a conversation” for anyone who is struggling with their mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said he considered postponing the song’s release for a more “normal time”, but realised its message of strength was incredibly important. “It feels like a good time to be releasing a song about strength. I hope that when people hear the song they can connect. If this song can help one person, then it was worth it.” Music and performing have been Sheridan’s passion for as long as he can remember.

A one-stop-shop for advice on the COVID-19 pandemic has opened in the Macedon Ranges. he council-run Recovery Operations Centre (ROC) provides residents with a centralised service to contact for support, information, to ofer assistance, or put forward recovery ideas and suggestions. he centre is stafed by council oicers who will link with local agencies to respond to requests for assistance and co-ordinate ofers of help. Children are allocated a Preschool at Home team, who will provide one-on-one support and work with families to understand how children are

According to Hume council, more than 1200 families are completing the Preschool at Home program, with many choosing a mix of in-centre and online learning. here are 2100 children currently enrolled in a council-run preschool. Mayor Carly Moore said the program,
which launched two weeks ago, would provide families with a variety of experiences for their children. “While nothing can replace in-centre preschool, Preschool at Home will ensure children have access to a rich variety of experience to facilitate their learning and provides a platform to still have contact with their teachers,” she said. “We understand families may also be home schooling other children and we have designed the curriculum to continue the play-based philosophy of [early childhood development]. “his is a big change for our families and
staf and the program has been well received. “Interactive experiences that work on the child’s ine-motor skills, communication and co-operation have been designed to be completed remotely at a time which works in with the family’s needs.” he council has also set up a private Preschool at Home Facebook group to encourage interaction between families and provide access to activities and information. Foodbank inquiries grow Between 10 and 15 new clients each week are reaching out to the Gisborne Community Care Foodbank for support as the coronavirus crisis continues to impact people’s inances. Gisborne Community Care Foodbank secretary Julie Ireland said about 100 clients are visiting the foodbank each month, but it is preparing for that number to increase. Ms Ireland said she expects more people to seek help as unemployment igures rise. “It is diicult for people to ask for help … I think a lot of people don’t want to ask for help,” she said. “But we are here to help. Everything is very conidential … I think that is very important.” In order to adhere to social distancing regulations, the foodbank has been forced to reduce the number of volunteers helping out to just three. It has also put a stop to walk-ins. “We try to get people to make an appointment
to help keep the numbers safe,” Ms Ireland said. “We are trying to encourage people to let us do no-contact delivery where possible.” Ms Ireland said community donations were helping ease the burden on the foodbank. he organisation has donation bins at Coles, Foodworks and Liberty Health and Happiness in Gisborne, as well as at the Macedon Post Oice. It also receives donations of vegetables from the gardens of Macedon residents. “he community support has just been phenomenal,” she said. “I go to Foodworks or Coles every week and the containers are full. Museum comes to life
Family violence risk rises
By Laura Michel For 50 years, the Kyneton Museum has been sharing stories from the town’s past. he museum, which was originally known as the Kyneton Folk Museum, opened its doors on April 16, 1970. he museum’s oicial opening by then Premier Sir Henry Bolte was attended by 300 people and is said to be one of the most memorable and signiicant days in Kyneton’s history. With the museum currently closed due to COVID-19 restrictions, Macedon Ranges council is celebrating its 50th birthday with a social media campaign. he campaign highlights the museum’s social history collection and will include Facebook posts featuring historic photos and videos and some of the interesting objects which provide insights into the lives of people of the Victorian era and gold rush times. he council said the celebrations aim to raise awareness of the importance of the museum’s collection and its relevance to the shire. Women’s Health West says it is expecting to see a “spike” in reports of family violence as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. he not-for-proit organisation provides services such as court support, crisis housing and case management to women and children who experience violence in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Brimbank, Moonee Valley and Melbourne. WHW’s chief executive Dr Robyn Gregory said reports of family violence oten increased during times of disaster and emergency. Broadmeadows station a priority By Laura Michell Broadmeadows train station should be upgraded and the Bulla bypass built by 2024, according to a new report by northern suburbs councils. he Northern Councils Alliance, with support from business group North Link, has released its Building Communities, Connecting People : Northern Horizons 2020 report, which outlines the infrastructure needed across the north to keep pace with population growth. According to the report, the population of
the northern suburbs is expected to reach 1.5 million people by 2036 – an increase of 500,000 people. It said there had been inadequate state and federal government investment in Melbourne’s north since 2014-15. “he size of Melbourne’s north and its rate of population growth imply a large and rapidly growing requirement for new/ upgraded infrastructure and services, from the fast-growing fringe areas to the densifying suburbs,” the report stated. “Adequate state and federal government
support will also assist the region to make its transition from a traditional manufacturing base to one characterised by advanced manufacturing, the knowledge economy and services.” he report lists several infrastructure projects which will require funding by 2024, including the upgrade to Broadmeadows train station, the Bulla bypass, the business case and environmental studies for the Outer Metropolitan Ring Road and E6 freeway and upgraded car parking at train stations. Construction of the Outer Metropolitan Ring Road and E6, the extension of rail services
to Wollert, and the creation of an Upield to Somerton rail link will be required by 2032, the report stated. Hume councillor, Jana Taylor said the Northern Horizons reports “reinforced” the need for more funding for the north. “From the outset, [the report] … reinforces the need for state and federal government representatives to stand up and stand together to deliver the key infrastructure priorities,” she said. “And I know that until all of these projects get of the ground, Hume City Council will continue to advocate.”
Drive-through lu shots Northern Health is again ofering free lu vaccinations to the community, but this year’s immunisation program has a drive-in twist. Northern Health will run its lu vaccination program from the carpark of its NCHER building instead of the main Northern Hospital building. Anyone wanting a lu vaccination will be asked to arrive at the building’s carpark, which can be accessed from Cooper Street, ive minutes before their appointment. People will then be asked to leave their cars and will be directed to a designated waiting area. Flu shots will be administered inside or outside the NCHER building, depending on the weather. Northern Health is asking people to remain in the waiting area for 15 minutes ater receiving their vaccination. Northern Health said there was suicient

Student’s state honour A Sunbury teen has been named as a young ambassador for the Shrine of Remembrance. Salesian College year 10 student, Rachel Grover was appointed to the leadership role to help encourage other young people to learn more about Australia’s military history. Unmasking new business
Council extends care support
By Laura Michell A Northern Health employee’s search for a business to make plastic face shields for frontline healthcare workers has helped keep an Epping business aloat. Northern Health respiratory department lab manager and head scientist Nicholas Romeo began searching for a local face mask manufacturer ater hearing about a potential need for large quantities of personal protective equipment during a discussion with the head of the respiratory department, Dr Katharine See. Mr Romeo cold-called a few local plastic folder manufacturers and came across Victor Stoyanaski. Mr Stoyanaski, who has run Norbind Plastics for 28 years and already supplies Northern Hospital with the plastic folders used at the end of beds, said he was initially sceptical of Mr Romeo’s proposal, but decided he had nothing to lose. He said at the time Mr Romeo called, he had already stood down the majority of his staf, working them in rotation. Ater just a few days, Mr Stoyanaski had developed a prototype to show stakeholders, including emergency department and theatre physicians. He was able to deliver his irst order of face shields within the week and is now in the process of delivering another 10,000 to Northern Health. Mr Stoyanaski said now he had the irst order under his belt, he was investing in machinery to make cutting the material quicker. He has received inquiries for the masks from Melbourne and interstate. “I want to make it more eicient and then ramp up production,” he said. “If not for Nicholas, I would be facing a very diferent

It said data sim cards would be provided to enhanced maternal and child health clients to enable them to access online appointments and other support, while distraction packs focused on mindfulness, mental health, family games and gardening will be made available to the Aboriginal community. he council is also ofering a remote support program for vulnerable families, an outreach program for isolated groups and individuals, and will translate important information for multicultural communities. Administrator Lydia Wilson said the council had made $150,000 available for non-government agencies that provide direct support to individuals and families living in Whittlesea. “his is to ensure our ratepayer dollars are directed to where the gaps are while balancing the need to continue delivering essential valued services to the whole community,” she said. Lending a helping hand to vulnerable patients While we have all been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, its impact is being felt more by some in our community than others. For patients undergoing cancer treatment, or those suffering a chronic health condition, a trip to the supermarket to stock up on pantry supplies can have a devastating impact. To minimise the risk of exposure to the virus, and to ensure patients are not missing out on basic pantry supplies, the Western Health Foundation has stepped in to lend a helping hand. Funded through generous cash donations from the community, the foundation is assisting some of our most vulnerable patients in the community by purchasing and delivering essential pantry staples. The patients, identiied through the BreastWest and Greatest Need support programs, will receive a delivery of essential grocery items including toilet paper and ingredients for meals and snacks. BreastWest support oficer Jennie Wetzler welcomed the support. “With supermarkets experiencing stock outages of many essential items, this directly affects our patients. The last thing we want is for our patients who are immunocompromised to have to make multiple trips to the supermarket and expose themselves unnecessarily just to ind basic grocery items,” she said. “At any time, a breast cancer diagnosis will have a inancial impact to patients. On top of
this some have lost their jobs or partners have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 situation. “Through donations from the community we are able to support these patients and ensure they get the necessary items they need to get them through. “Seeing the joy, and relief, on the faces of our patients when they receive their grocery box is truly uplifting.” Patients identiied through the Greatest Need Project will also beneit from the grocery boxes. These patients are among some of the most vulnerable, often experiencing multiple hospital admissions for chronic conditions, as well as experiencing inancial hardship. Many do not have the ability, or access, to order groceries online and are putting themselves at risk by leaving home to get to the supermarket. Sunshine Hospital has established ’The Pantry’ for those in immediate need of necessary grocery items. This might be a patient being discharged to an empty home for example, to assist them in settling in and recovering for a few days without having the added worry of going to a supermarket. Patients can gain immediate access to basic grocery items donated through the Western Health Foundation. Sunbury’s Madison Prespakis has capped of an incredible season by claiming the game’s highest individual honour, the AFLW’s Best and Fairest Award. he 19-year-old, who last year was named the NAB ALFW Rising Star during her debut season, also claimed Carlton’s highest individual honour during a virtual best and fairest count last week. In an incredible start to her career, Prespakis is now a dual club best and fairest, dual AFLW All Australian, NAB AFLW Rising Star, AFLPA and Carlton Best First Year Player, AFLPA MVP runner-up and AFLPA 22under22 vice-captain. Prespakis began the Carlton best and fairest vote count with a best aield performance against Richmond in round one. She inished the season with 74 votes, ahead of teammates Chloe Dalton (56), Georgia Gee (43) and irst-year players Grace Egan (41) and Lucy McEvoy (39). he midielder was also awarded the Big Ant Fan award. Prespakis, who played her junior football with Romsey Junior Football Club, the Sunbury Lions and Calder Cannons, was taken at pick three in the 2018 AFLW drat. Carlton AFLW senior coach Daniel Harford said Prespakis had this year taken the extra attention from weekly taggers in her stride, averaging 21 disposals and four clearances a game. “For Maddy to be a dual best and fairest winner at 19 years of age is a remarkable achievement,” Harford said. “She handles the attention she receives from the opposition every week with class and sets a great example for our entire playing group. “She is going to be a fantastic player for the Carlton Football Club for a long time to come.”
