Monster fun on bin night Sightings of superheroes, dinosaurs and movie characters have been reported across Wyndham. It’s all part of a nation-wide trend which encourages people to wear funny or formal outits while taking out the bins. Queenslander Danielle Askew started the Bin Isolation Outing Facebook group as a way to make people smile during the COVID-19 pandemic. The page went viral and now has more than 987,000 members, from across the world. Among those who have joined in the fun is Hoppers Crossing’s Ashley Tottle, who has taken out the bins dressed as characters from the Monsters Inc and Thor ilms. A video of Mr Tottle taking the bins out as Thor – complete with a hammer and blonde wig – attracted more than 70 likes and other reactions on the Bin Isolation Outing Facebook page, earlier this month. Community scrubs up well By Alesha Capone Residents and community centres across the west have come together in a mammoth efort to sew 6000 scrub gowns for front line staf at Western Health. Point Cook’s Jasmine Hill, along with her friends Lily and Cassy, kick-started the scrubs campaign. Mrs Hill, who belongs to a Christian church which last month donated facemasks during the pandemic, has friends who work in hospitals. She said during the COVID-19 lockdown she had begun thinking of ways to help the community.
hat prompted her to contact the Western Health Foundation’s community fundraising manager Danny Crabb, who mentioned that hospital staf needed more scrubs. “Us three girls, Lily, Cassy and I, we said, ‘Let’s do this’, so we started to reach out to more people and spread the news,” Mrs Hill said. She said she contacted Point Cook Community Learning Centre for assistance, and soon the Wyndham Park, Iramoo and Arndell Park Community Centres joined in the scrubs campaign. Network West, which provides support to Neighbourhood Houses in the west, also became involved, and the centres began
recruiting volunteers to sew the scrubs. “I’m just very happy we now have more than 200 sewers on board,” Mrs Hill said. “We love the community, we love the hospitals and we just want to help out. “We want to let doctors and nurses know we are behind them.” Spotlight Derrimut has donated 3000 metres of fabric to the campaign. Mrs Hill said the community centres were looking for more donations of material to supply to the volunteers making the scrubs. Council support for businesses By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has announced further details of its $5 million WynLocal economic support package, to help businesses afected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Mayor Josh Gilligan last week said the WynLocal package had been ine-tuned to complement the packages announced by the federal and state governments over the past four weeks. WynLocal has four key elements, including waiving of council fees and charges directly
related to business operation in Wyndham and a free professional services advice program. he package also includes rates deferral for six months for eligible businesses operating in Wyndham’s commercial, industrial and agricultural zones. To be eligible for the rates deferral, businesses must have a Wyndham trading address, an active ABN or ACN number and a turnover of less than $50 million, and/or less than 100 employees. he council will also consider rates deferrals for businesses which have more than 100
employees and/or a turnover of more than $50 million, if companies can provide information conirming that a deferral will assist cash low to a level that will signiicantly support their capacity to continue trading and maintain staf. Businesses will also need to supply the council with a statement conirming that they have been negatively impacted by the coronavirus. In addition to this, the WynLocal package features a business recovery and growth program.
Grants will be available for businesses that meet eligibility criteria, including the ability to adapt to post COVID-19 trading conditions and potential for growth. Cr Gilligan said the Business Recovery and Growth Program would align with the very early stages of transition to “recovery” and initial relaxation of social distancing protocols overing the coming weeks and months. College aids shield drive A Point Cook school has helped to supply hospital workers with much-needed face shields during the COVID-19 pandemic. Alamanda K-9 College is home to two industry-standard 3D printers, so when Brisbane-based company 3D One Australia put out a call for anyone with a 3D printer to help make the parts needed for face shields, Alamanda stepped up to help. Lachlan hompson, a technology technician at the college, has so far printed 150 parts and sent them back to Brisbane, where they have been used to make face shields for hospital staf. “We are making some more [face shield parts] we can send out to the community, if need be,” Mr hompson said. “I’m super-stoked we’re able to help out and it’s only going to take one of the face shields doing its job to make it worthwhile.” Mr hompson said that, using other technology equipment at the college, he had
also been able to make complete face shields for staf at the school. “We’ve made some for the front-of-house staf, school nurses and IT technicians,” he said. “he smile on their face, and the realisation we’ve got the capacity to do that, is amazing.” Mr hompson said his role at Alamanda included training college staf on how to use educational technology. He has also been sitting in on digital technology and community classes, while the college’s students have been learning remotely from home. Mr hompson said he had passed the 3D One Australia face shield design onto students, who have been able to use 3D printers at home, to create face-shields for their family members. A 22 year-old Point Cook motorcyclist was detected travelling at 120km/h in a 60m/h on April 18. Police attended Point Cook Road, about 9.45am after receiving reports of a motorcyclist riding erratically in the area. The man was charged with exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, speed dangerous, unlicensed driving (riding) and riding an unregistered vehicle.

A team from Paciic Werribee delivered git packs to childcare centre employees across Wyndham earlier this month, to thank the workers for their eforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. he packs included items such as cofee, tea, sweets, and hand creams for childcare workers, and books for children. hey were delivered to Nido Early School, Little Learners and Wallaby Childcare Harpley in Werribee; Kool Kidz in Tarneit West; Wyndarra Children’s Centre and Back to Basics in Hoppers Crossing; and Goodstart Early Learning Centres at Hoppers Crossing and Werribee. Gardiner said supporting the local community during times of need was a priority for the centre. “We have great respect for childcare workers and educators who are helping to support our community by continuing to look ater and teach children during the current medical crisis,” Ms Gardiner said. Police have charged three men following an aggravated burglary and the theft of a motor car at a house in Middleton Drive, Point Cook on April 18. Police observed the stolen car being driven shortly after 11.30am, and followed it to Truganina. Two men, aged 19, both of Point Cook, and a 20 year-old Truganina man, have been charged with aggravated burglary and theft of a motor car.
Drugs, cash found Police arrested two men in Melbourne CBD on April 19, after they were seen driving erratically about 9.55am. Oficers conducted a search of the vehicle and allegedly found drugs, ammunition, cash and a knife. A 19-year-old Richmond man and his 23-year-old passenger from Truganina were also ined $1652 for being in breach of COVID-19 restrictions. Parents count blessings By Alesha Capone Truganina couple Pawandeep Kaur and Sukhjinder ‘Sunny’ Singh felt blessed when their daughter was born last year. Fittingly, their little girl’s name, Asees, means “blessing”. Before Asees entered the world the husband and wife faced a long and diicult road to parenthood. Ms Kaur said she experienced ive miscarriages, and saw four gynaecologists at diferent hospitals, before her cousin told her about Frances Perry House in Parkville. Ater visiting a gynaecologist at Frances Perry House, her next pregnancy was her irst to last longer than 12 weeks, although she miscarried at 16 weeks. “It was very tough times for us,” Ms Kaur said. But she said the nursing staf at Frances Perry “were very helpful and they gave me a hope to try again”. It was at Frances Perry that Ms Kaur met Dr Scott Schemer, who – along with obstetrician Professor Mark Umstad and gynaecologist Associate Professor Alex Ade – runs he Preterm Birth and Pregnancy Loss Group. he group, the irst of its kind in Melbourne, is aimed at helping women who have experienced a stillbirth or miscarriage, or who are at high risk of having a preterm delivery. he clinic includes counsellors to help women with the grief and trauma of loss. Ms Kaur said Dr Schemer conducted many tests and advised her that she needed complete bed rest while pregnant. Ms Kaur was admitted to Frances Perry House in July last year and stayed in the antenatal ward until Asees was born in December.

She spent another ive days in the post-natal ward. Asees was in the special nursery for two weeks ater she was born. “he nursing staf were so lovely, they helped me every day and kept me motivated,” Ms Kaur said.
his year, Frances Perry House is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Ms Kaur said she wanted to thank all the staf and Dr Shemmer for their help. “It took us nine years to become parents and Dr Scott never gave up on me,” she said.

Tip reopens to public Wyndham’s municipal tip in Wests Road, Werribee reopened to the public on Monday, following three weeks of closure to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the community. While council’s landill operations have remained open during the pandemic, on April 2 the refuse disposal facility began operating on a restricted basis for commercial customers. Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan last week said the council had deemed it appropriate to reopen the tip to the public, with the inclusion of strict social distancing measures. “We have closed of alternate bays to increase the distance between people disposing of waste at the facility and have implemented a higher cleaning regime, ensuring all touch points, especially the handrails, are cleaned with disinfectant frequently,” Cr Gilligan said. “Because we have closed some bays to meet social distancing requirements, there may be a queue … so we ask you to remain patient during this time. “he facility will be open to the public from Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 4pm.” he sale shop will remain closed while stage 3 COVID-19 restrictions are in place. Sunday operations would resume following the removal of these restrictions. Cr Gilligan said there had been a record number of inquiries for hard waste collections since residents have been in lockdown.

Second chance for kittens By Alesha Capone Kittens Bunny, Mify and Bilby had a tough start to life – they were found dumped in a rubbish bin near a Williams Landing supermarket on the Easter weekend. But the cute felines are now being cared for by Purrs of Point Cook Inc, a registered charity and cat rescue group. Purrs rescuer Rebecca Roberts said the kittens were found by a Woolworths staf member when she threw some rubbish away. “She saw something moving and investigated,” Ms Roberts said.

“here was two kittens near the top [of the bin] and when she moved a bag, she found another hiding underneath. “hey were covered in milk from the bottom of the bin and were all terriied.” A colleague referred the supermarket worker to Purrs of Point Cook, who came to the kittens’ rescue. Ms Roberts said the kittens were “extremely timid” and not fond of being handled by humans when they were irst rescued. hey were now in “pretty good health” and were slowly being won over by their foster carer but were not yet ready for adoption. Ms Roberts described dumping the kittens in the bin as a cruel act. “I would like to say I’m surprised by this behaviour, but sadly I’m not – over the years I have seen some terrible acts of cruelty,” she said.

Racing Victoria has announced that a meeting will be held on hursday, May 7 at the Werribee racecourse. he eight-race program will ofer prize money of $31,500 for each race. he meeting is possible because this year’s Warrnambool May Carnival has been reduced from a three-day event to two, to be held on May 5 and 6. In a statement, Racing Victoria said that horse racing and training had been permitted to continue in Victoria during the COVID-19 pandemic under strict biosecurity protocols, developed in accordance with advice from the Victorian government and the chief health oicer. “hat said, RV is continually reviewing the industry’s biosecurity protocols which serve to protect the health of industry staf, participants and the wider community; as well as minimise the risk of participants catching the virus which may in turn impact on the continuation of racing,” the statement said. Werribee Racecourse is one of the oldest in the state, and has been located on Bulban Road since 1861. Nowadays, the racecourse’s stables at the Werribee International Horse Centre are usually used to house international horses during their quarantine, before the commencement of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Remembering the life that Neil built Tributes are lowing for much-loved Werribee resident and volunteer Neil Dillon, who passed away earlier this month. Neil, 88, spent decades volunteering within the Maribyrnong and Wyndham communities. A master cratsman, he moved to Werribee in 2004, and volunteered to teach trade carpentry and woodwork at the Wyndham Park Community Shed. He also helped to plan and build the Heathdale and Neighbourhood Community Shed (Heathdale Men’s Shed) and spent seven years working on the project with Wyndham council oicers. He served on the shed’s board and volunteered at the Heathdale Neighbourhood Association. Neil’s daughter Robyn said that before moving to Werribee, her father spent about 20 years volunteering in Maribyrnong, while he lived in Braybrook. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Braybrook Men’s Shed, where he also volunteered as a teacher. Neil won the Maribyrnong council Educator’s Award for volunteer educators in 2000. He was also a member of the Army Reserve and played the trumpet and trombone in multiple bands, including police, army and the Sunshine City Band. Robyn said her dad enjoyed boxing and wheelbarrow racing in his younger days, and was a keen cyclist for many years, including participating in the City2Surf event. Together with his late wife Joan, Neil had six children, 18 grandchildren and 25 greatgrandchildren. He helped his children build six family homes.

Robyn said her father was “the best”. “He touched a lot of lives,” she said. “He was full of information, very, very intelligent, and always telling stories about the past, his memory was unbelievable.” Ater the news of Neil’s passing was posted on the Werribee Men’s Shed Facebook page, several people commented about how much he would be missed in the community. Following on from last week’s column, I’m pleased to inform you all that Wyndham’s Refuse Disposal Facility has reopened to the public. The ip has been closed for the last three weeks to help stop the spread of COVID-19. With the implementaion of strict social distancing measures, it was decided that the facility could now reopen. Alternate bays are closed of to increase the distance between people disposing of waste and a more frequent cleaning regime has also been introduced. These changes mean that there may be longer than normal queues to get into the ip, so we appreciate your paience as we work to assist you. The facility will be open to the public from Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm, and Saturdays 8:30am to 4pm. Currently the most important thing we can all do to help stop the spread of COVID-19 is stay at home. That’s why I’d encourage you to book a hard waste collecion if you can, so instead of visiing the ip we can come to you! Many of you may also be experiencing inancial hardship at the moment, so I also wanted to let you know about the opions to defer residenial rates that are available at Council. People who have experienced a 20 percent reducion in their income can apply to defer their outstanding residenial rates for the 2019/20 inancial year. Individual payment plans will also be considered on request. During these uncertain imes, it’s important that we come together as a community to support each other. That’s why Council has made these opions available. In conjuncion with our WYNLocal Economic Support Package, we’re proud to do everything we can to help Wyndham get through this together.

State acts on chemical stockpiles By Laura Michell Victoria’s dangerous goods laws will be reviewed by the state government in a bid to stamp out “unsafe chemical stockpiling”. he government has appointed Andrew Palmer, QC, to conduct the review of the Dangerous Goods Act and associated regulations. he government said the review is the latest step in its response to chemical stockpiling following two large chemical ires in
Tottenham in August 2018 and Campbellield in April 2019. Following the ires, WorkSafe led a blitz on industrial premises across Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs to ensure dangerous chemicals were being stored correctly. he investigations led to the discovery of waste chemicals stockpiled at 13 sites in the northern suburbs last year. A taskforce, led by WorkSafe, has removed more than 13 million litres of stockpiled waste chemicals from the sites so far.
Four sites in Epping, three in Craigieburn and three in Campbellield have been cleared, while the inal three sites in Campbellield are currently being cleared. WorkSafe has charged Bradbury Industrial Services with 35 breaches of the Dangerous Goods Act in relation to ive of the sites in Campbellield and Craigieburn. WorkSafe has also charged Graham Leslie White, 58, with 55 ofences over the alleged illegal stockpiling of dangerous goods at four warehouses he occupied in Epping and one in Campbellield. Investigations are continuing.
Workplace Safety Minister Jill Hennessy said the review was important to ensure the state’s laws would protect the community from dangers of chemical stockpiling. “We know that the unsafe storing, handling or disposal of dangerous chemicals poses a real threat to local communities,” she said. “his review will make sure dangerous goods laws remain efective and keep Victorian’s safe.” Mr Palmer is expected to submit his inal report and recommendations to the government next year.
Zooming in on learning hird year marketing student Jessica Almenara always pictured the moment of relief and exuberance she’d feel walking out of her last class. Now the 25-year-old says she’s more likely to be sitting in front of her computer, donning pyjamas when her three years of hard work inally inish. Ms Almenara attends Victoria University and said things snowballed rapidly when COVID-19 restrictions were introduced. “At VU they do a block learning module, where you focus on one unit for a four-week period,” she said. “We did our irst four-week block as normal, but then ater that everything switched to online.” She admits it’s taken a bit of getting used to. “It’s interesting … I’d never used Zoom before and now all our classes are through it,” she said. “he irst few classes were a bit of an adjustment, but they brought in a new rule to
encourage us to turn our cameras on, which has been nice for interaction. “Other than that, we still have team groups and group work, but that’s all done over messenger and emails, which is a bit of a diference, but still the same structure.” Victoria University vice-chancellor professor Peter Dawkins said the early tracking for online learning was positive. “We’ve really been quite successful through remote learning,” Professor Dawkins said. “Staf and students have adapted extremely well … essentially we’ve converted everything to Zoom, so the teacher has 30 students on screen. Digger: Look for the good times By Goya Dmytryshchak One of the last surviving Diggers in Melbourne’s west says he is determined not to let coronavirus kill the Anzac spirit. Mr Gillespie stays in touch with his family and mates although he can’t physically see them. “I’m locked up, of course, like everybody else,” he said. “We all can’t get out anywhere, no visitors or anything like that.
“It’s very, very tough … I miss everything. “It’s an unfortunate thing and I never thought I’d see it in my lifetime but these things come along and you can’t help it. “[With] the dawn service, it’s a shame … but I think it’s for the good of the community.” Mr Gillespie joined the army as soon as he turned 18 in 1942. “I was a trooper, the cavalry,” he said. “he First World War was horses, of course, and the Second World War was tanks – I was in the tank.” He described COVID-19 as the worst thing he had experienced in his lifetime. “I would try, if I could, anything, anything to stop it,” Mr Gillespie said. “I’d probably call it an unknown enemy – you can’t see it. “It’s diferent in, say, war – you can see your opponent, you can either get out of his road or

But in this instance, it’s an unknown terror.” But Mr Gillespie remains stoic and said it was a matter of adapting to circumstances. “It’s just a matter of doing what you have to do,” he said. “here’s a very old saying that I go by and it’s: ‘he day that you were born is the irst day of the end of your life’. “hat means, you never know when you might meet your fate. It might be on the freeway, it might be a week ater you were born. Driveway tributes keep Anzac tradition alive Veterans, musicians and families across Wyndham turned out in droves to mark Anzac Day at the weekend. While COVID-19 pandemic regulations meant that most people could not attend traditional ceremonies or marches, many Australians stood in their driveways on Saturday morning to mark a minute’s silence. Among them was 99-year-old World War II
veteran William Maurice ‘Morrie’ Weston. Mr Weston was joined by his son Paul, grandson Dane and Dane’s partner Ollie in Werribee on Saturday morning. Paul said that his father served in an Air Force recovery unit during the war, and upon returning to Australia spent more than 20 years working as a storeman at the RAAF bases in Point Cook and Laverton.
At Wyndham Vale, Ian Domoney played Amazing Grace on the bagpipes as an Anzac tribute on Saturday morning. A member of the Victoria Scottish Pipes & Drums, Mr Domoney said he contacted musicians he knew, and also used social media, to urge pipers to play the song from their driveway. teacher Katharine Ware, said she usually played her trumpet at the school on Anzac Day. Life’s never bin better Sharon Cutajar from Wyndham Vale donned some Darth Vader apparel.
Putting the bins out has never looked so good. Star Weekly put a call out on Facebook last week, asking for photos of residents who have dressed up to take out their bins out during the coronavirus pandemic. We were overwhelmed with the response and loved seeing all your photos. Manor Lakes woman Sally Hanley said that she dressed up as a dinosaur to put out her bins. Ms Hanley said her father passed away on March 1, when the pandemic started to hit home across the world. “Since the irst of March, nothing has been right, the whole world is upside down, and people are freaking out,” she said. “Two of my friends, who don’t know each other, saw the bin isolation page on Facebook and they challenged me to wear my T-Rex costume to put the bin out.” Ms Hanley said her husband took photos of the occasion, while her daughter recorded it. “I work in childcare at Wallaby Childcare Centre, and I’m a student with Dynamic Performers Australia, so these days I’m not exactly shy, unlike in my younger years,” she said. “I like to make people smile, and if I can help someone forget their troubles for just a moment, then me dressing as a T-Rex was totally worth it.”

Check in and chat with council Wyndham council is inviting residents who feel lonely or isolated during the COVID-19 pandemic to ring for a chat. Mayor Josh Gilligan said the council had altered its services to match the needs of the community during the pandemic. “Check in and Chat is a one-on-one phone service, where you will be paired with a staf member for a regular chat – and they will check in on you to see how you are going,” he said. “his service demonstrates the care that we have for our community. “It is the role of local government to be agile and respond quickly when we see a need arise. 12 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 29 April, 2020

Patience keeps love shining By Alesha Capone Long-time Werribee residents Barry and Kathleen hompson celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary last week. he couple, who married at St homas Anglican Church in Synnot Street on April 23, 1960, have three daughters, Debbie, Alison and Mandy; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Barry was born in Werribee during 1937, while Kathleen was born in Sunshine during 1938. Her parents moved to Werribee South about 18 months ater she was born.

Kathleen’s family ran the Werribee South Post Oice and Telephone Exchange for about eight years. She worked there with her sisters, then at a local pharmacy and the original Werribee Hospital. Barry worked for the family business hompson Brothers Chaf Mill & Produce, along with his father and uncles. In their teenage years, Kathleen and Barry both attended the then-named Werribee Higher Elementary School together. In 1955, Kath’s family moved from Werribee South into Werribee – one street away from Barry’s family home. he couple said that Werribee has “grown dramatically” since they were young when you could ride a bike or walk to the main street of Werribee “and you would know everyone you saw”.

“It was a country suburb with a country atmosphere, not built up and hemmed in like it is today,” they said. “When we married and lived on the Princes Highway [opposite the current police station] there were very few houses and Hoppers Crossing was all vacant land. “here was hardly any crime – we always felt safe, we could leave our car unlocked and windows down and not worry.” Barry and Kath have both been active in
the local community, including in Scouts, Guides, the ambulance service, Lions Club and Jaycees, the Wyndham Lodge Ladies Auxiliary and Hoppers Crossing Uniting Church Opportunity Shop. hese days, one of the couple’s favourite past-times is to visit the South Corner Café, which used to be the local milk bar (Sheehan’s) when they were both growing up. “Seeing the old milk bar turned into a café with great cofee and food has been a real
highlight of these later years,” Barry said. A photo of the former milk bar, which Barry took when he was 15, has been enlarged and printed on a wall inside the café. Kath and Barry said their advice for a long-lasting marriage was to be patient, respectful, committed and understanding. Kath now resides at Mercy Place Aged Care facility due to ill health. Barry, who lives within walking distance, visits her almost every day.

Two Wyndham businesses have launched a hamper featuring local produce. Ininity Blue Barramundi, from the world’s largest barramundi hatchery in Werribee, and Wyndham Cache, a restaurant and deli based at LT’s Eggs farm in Werribee South, have partnered to put together the Wyndham Local Hamper. Elle Parkinson from Mainstream Aquaculture, which runs the Werribee barramundi hatchery, said the idea for the hamper came about ater Wyndham Cache started stocking Ininity Blue’s fresh illeted barramundi. “We have started with a hamper that features some great seasonal veg, grains and fresh barramundi for creating healthy meals at home,” she said. “We have also included some smoked illets and marinated antipasto selections for those cosy nights in.
“he hamper ofers endless healthy meal options and we will be working to come up with more recipes and ideas for people to try. “We will also look at changing the hamper seasonally so that we are really ofering the best of local produce to the community.” Ms Parkinson said that with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mainstream Aquaculture had also launched an online store and was doing home deliveries for both fresh illeted and smoked ish. “We also have a code for free delivery for Wyndham residents and would love to let the community know,” she said. “We are also starting a Farm Gate Pick-up from this week, where customers can come and buy ish directly from us. “Wyndham has been simply fantastic in its support of the new online store.” Alesha Capone
Sports centre hopes to re-open he owner of a family-run Hoppers Crossing indoor sports centre says he is hopeful the business will be able to re-open following the COVID-19 pandemic. John Almond has been running Hoppers Indoor Sportz, which specialises in indoor cricket, indoor netball, children’s sports parties and functions, for 13 years. Mr Almond said the business shut its doors on March 22, the same day that Prime Minister Scott Morrison said indoor sports centres must close. Mr Almond said his family understood the reasons for the shutdown, but it had let them feeling “absolutely shattered”.
“here is still a risk we might not re-open – we know everyone’s in the same boat,” he said. “But we hope to re-open. We want to be around for another 13 years, we feel like we are a part of the community.” Mr Almond said that ater the sports centre closed last month, he had been let with no choice but to contact customers and cancel about three weeks’ worth of function bookings, including children’s birthday parties. “We feel bad for the kids who have missed their birthday celebrations,” he said. “We were kept busy for a bit, returning people’s deposits.” Mr Almond said that the organisers of one
function, a family reunion, had mentioned they hoped to re-book the event ater the pandemic lockdown was over. It is a private and conidential consultation where the physio can discuss, assess and accurately determine an injury and advise the appropriate course of treatment and rehabilitation. Mark, who is also on the Board of Directors of the Australian Physiotherapy Association, explains that the rehabilitation process is enhanced with exercise prescription technology by sharing and demonstrating live videos. “For those clients who need to self-isolate or are unable to attend our clinics, the telehealth
experience and feedback so far has been exceptional.” Despite this, Mark says that with many people rapidly transitioning to self-isolation and working from home, this has presented a number of new physical health concerns for clients. “We are inding people are reporting more posture-related neck and back pain and headaches from a poor workstation set-up,” he says. “In response to this, we have introduced new home workstation assessments to our services. Using Telehealth we perform a worksite analysis and provide recommendations to optimise ergonomic set-up. Wagons still hold their own By Ewen Kennedy/ Marque Motoring Australians have loved station wagon for many decades. Our mobile lifestyles mean we like to carry bulky items, either on holiday trips or to move house from one place to another. hese days traditional station wagons have largely been replaced by SUVs and 4WDs on many people’s shopping lists, but there are still those who prefer lower, more stylish wagons that give sedan-like comfort. Mazda may have what is generally the biggest selling SUV in Australia in the CX-5, but still ofers a conventional wagon in the form of the Mazda6 wagon. Our test vehicle was the Sport variant, the “sport’ in the title refers more to parents taking kids to sports, rather to any real sportiness in the car.

More about the torque in the Driving section of this review. he higher spec GT and Atenza models use a Skyactiv-G 2.5T turbocharged petrol engine with maximum power of 170 kW and torque of 420 Nm at a nicely low 2000rpm.

STYLING Mazda6 wagon is an excellent iteration of the Japanese marque’s very successful Kodo shape, particularly at the front. he rear isn’t so much conventional wagon as semi-coupe. It works well from a styling point of view. Inside, the sporting coupe theme continues, with a wide dashboard that has a traditional three-dial arrangement directly in front of the driver. he speedo is in the centre, the tacho to the let and the dial to the right gives fuel and water temperature details. here’s also programmable readings on the right-hand dial.
space for two adults one behind the other, but if they are on the lanky side there might have to be some discussions as to who gets what space. he front seats are a bit of a climb down if you’re getting on in years, but once in there you will ind them spacious and comfortable with good side and under-thigh support. he rear doors are smallish – reminding us why SUVs are taking over the ‘car’ market – but there’s good space for two, with less width and length in the centre seat. It is a ive-seater, but only just if you’ve got a trio of large teenagers back there. Have taller teens check for headroom as the swoopy roof comes into play if they like to sit upright. Engine performance is very good and throttle response is all but instantaneous. Mazda’s clever G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus) is used in all the ‘6 models, not just in the Sport variant. An enhanced version of the existing GVC vehicle dynamics control technology, it adds yaw moment control for better stability and composure when cornering. he feel through the steering is more limo-like than sports-like and we feel that’s what the typical buyer will prefer. he ride/comfort compromise leans in the comfort direction and this make an excellent long distance touring car. Road noise is muted nicely on concrete motorways, but coarse-chip bitumen does create more sound than we like, which isn’t unusual in imported cars so it’s barely a criticism of the big Mazda.
