Community scrubs up well By Alesha Capone Residents and community centres across the west have come together as part of a mammoth efort to sew 6000 scrub gowns for frontline staf at Western Health. he health organisation, which runs Footscray, Sunshine and Williamstown Hospitals, has partnered with 20 community centres in the western suburbs to create the much-needed scrubs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Point Cook’s Jasmine Hill, along with her friends Lily and Cassy, kick-started the scrubs

campaign. Mrs Hill, who belongs to a Christian church which last month donated facemasks during the pandemic, has friends who work in hospitals. She said that during the pandemic lockdown, she had begun thinking about ways to help the community in these “unprecedented times”. She contacted Western Health Foundation’s community fundraising manager Danny Crabb, who mentioned that hospital staf needed more scrubs. “Us three girls, Lily, Cassy and I, we said, ‘Let’s do this,’ so we started to reach out to more

people and spread the news,” she said. Mrs Hill said she contacted Point Cook Community Learning Centre for assistance, and soon the Wyndham Park, Iramoo and Arndell Park Community Centres joined in the scrubs campaign. Network West, which provides support to Neighbourhood Houses in the west, also became involved, and the centres began recruiting volunteers to sew the scrubs. “I’m just very happy we now have more than 200 sewers on board,” Mrs Hill said. “We love the community, we love the

hospitals and we just want to help out. “We want to let doctors and nurses know we are behind them.” Spotlight Derrimut has donated 3000 metres of fabric to the campaign. Mrs Hill said the community centres were looking for more donations of material, to supply to the volunteers making the scrubs. Diabetics urged to keep medical appointments

Anzac spirit lives on despite lockdown Dawn services may have been cancelled this year, but that didn’t stop residents of Melton and Moorabool paying tribute on Anzac Day. Caroline Springs RSL president Andy Marshall said while the day looked diferent, it was far from cancelled. “We just had to be inventive and do things a slightly diferent way,” he said. “As the Last Post was played during the Anzac Day Dawn Service we asked people to walk outside, stand in their yard, driveway, or balcony and observe

a minute of silence in respect of our veterans,” Mr Murphy said. “We all needed to maintain that Anzac spirit in these trying times.” Residents were also still able to lay lowers at the Caroline Springs war memorial, but strict social distancing measures were in place to ensure people didn’t congregate together. he Caroline Springs First Scout Group spent weeks leading up to Anzac Day trying to rally support for private driveway vigils.

People with diabetes are being urged not to skip medical appointments during the coronavirus crisis. Diabetes Victoria said it was crucial people with a chronic health condition such as diabetes continue their care via face-to-face or telehealth appointments. Chief executive Craig Bennett said continuing with the “annual cycle of care” would help people with diabetes identify any health concerns early and discuss the best treatment options with doctors and diabetes health professionals. “Without regular checks, diabetes can lead to complications that can afect the whole body. Diabetes increases a person’s risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision or loss of a limb,” he said. “Now we have more options than ever to engage with our health professionals who are using telehealth to consult with patients who don’t require or can’t organise a face-to-face visit.” Mr Bennett said the “annual cycle of care” for people living with diabetes was made up of a number of important health checks including blood glucose levels, blood pressure, foot assessment, eye examination, kidney health, blood fats, weight, exercise, nutrition and a review of medications. “If you do need to see your doctor face-to-face, waiting rooms around the country have adapted to cope with the requirements of health authorities to keep people safe. So there is no reason for people with diabetes to delay their health checks,” he said. Laura Michell

Property prices could take a hit By Tate Papworth A leading real estate agent says house prices could potentially drop by 10 per cent in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. John Keating, of Keating Real Estate, said it was too early to tell how much prices would drop, but it would be naive to think they won’t. “Turnover is down, but in regards to prices, it’s too early to call. here seems to be a sense of inevitability that there will be a correction,” Mr Keating said. “he impact is likely to be varied, but for

residential median house sale prices, there’s a real possibility of it coming back 5-10 per cent.” Jim Hatzimosis, at Barry Plant Real Estate, said the current dilemma is similar to issues the market faced before the virus struck. “It’s a luid situation changing by the day,” Mr Hatzimosis said. “here’s still transactions taking place, but the volume of sales has dropped of.” Restriction ushered in as part of the government response to slow the spread of COVID-19 put a stop to in-person auctions and open house inspections.

Mr Hatzimosis said while that’s had its challenges, the industry hasn’t shut down. “We’re working with less buyers, but the ones we are working with are keen to buy. here’s less inspections, but a high quality of inspectors,” he said. Nancy Crupi of YPA Melton said it had been

a major adjustment. “For us it’s been about changing the way we take people through a property,” Ms Crupi said. “For example we take a husband and wife through a property one at a time.” She said it was a bit of waiting game. “A lot of people are holding back in selling so we’re just waiting to see what happens. “Buyer activity is great … there’s a lot of good buyers out there at the moment, but they’re looking at less stock. “It’s deinitely going to be at least May 11 before we can have auctions and open houses.”

Cooking up support A group of community-minded people from a Sikh temple in Plumpton are banding together to help those in need. Last week, members of the temple set up a food station at DJ Cunningham Reserve in Melton and handed out more than 250 meals. Gurdarshan Singh, of the Khalsa Shaouni Sikh temple, said it was all about making sure everyone was supported during tough times. “We organised lunch and dessert to help people in a bit of need,” he said. While it was a logistical challenge to prepare so many meals, Mr Singh said the food quality didn’t sufer. “It’s been a pleasure to help the community out with our white chickpeas with rice and a rice pudding,” he said. “We tried to make it not so spicy so everyone can enjoy it.” It’s not the irst time the Sikh community has given back.

“At the temple we do this daily. People send a text message through, tell us what they’re ater and then the volunteers get together and take it out to the people’s houses,” Mr Singh said. “We serve about 500-600 people in the Melton area every day and cover almost the whole north-west. “During the [January] ires, we went all over Victoria, even to the border of New South Wales serving the people. “Once we inished that, the situation became normal, then this [COVID-19] happened. So we’ve continued to serve meals and even provide inancial help to the needy.” Tate Papworth

Sole traders ind a way By Tate Papworth A Cairnlea travel agent has turned to selling shoes from his agency to avoid inancial ruin. Cyrus Mil and his business partner Dimos Melifronides took over the business in November. hings started well with a loyal employee and customer base, but four months later the world became a much diferent place. “We were going really well but these COVID-19 restrictions came in and really hit the industry hard,” Mr Mil said. “We had to stand down four staf members and we have just as many working at home and on reduced hours.” he store remains open to ield questions from customers and to try to help get stranded travellers home, but Mr Mil said it isn’t enough. “We still have to pay rent and we really wanted to make sure we’re still standing when this is all over,” Mr Mil said. “So we spoke to a few friends who own clothing stores and they sold us some shoes and shirts and we’ve started selling them out of the store.” By appointment, the duo open the agency and sell the shoes to interested buyers. “It looks a little unusual … people walk into a travel agency and see shoes and clothing, but what else can we do? “It’s actually gone alright so far, we’ve sold a few. We’re just trying to survive.” Mr Mil said he was in the dark as to whether he was eligible for government assistance. “Obviously we’ve seen lots of information on the government packages, but the problem is we don’t know what’s happening. “We only took over this business four months ago and our accountant isn’t sure if we’re eligible for anything at this point. “It’s frustrating because we can see there’s help out there, but no one can give us an answer.”

The power of creative minds Vibrant street art is transforming power boxes across Melton. Melton council has commissioned ive pieces from four diferent professional and emerging artists, aged 18-25, to expand on its existing power box street art project. he council paired each artist with a local young person who helped direct their pieces, based on their own triumphs. Jack Denic has painted two of the power boxes and said it’s been an amazing opportunity. “My design was inspired by Specialist Hoops, who work out of the Melton basketball centre,” he said. “We came up with a design based of a bunch of quotes they use for their program, which came up well.” he works by can be viewed on the lawns of Caroline Springs library, Galloway Place in Caroline Springs, Lagarna Drive in Kurunjang and Barries Road in Melton West. Newspapers will be given a helping hand to continue publishing during the COVID-19 pandemic. he state government has announced a $4.7 million emergency support package for regional print media, which was developed in consultation with the Victorian Country Press Association. he government said it will book one page of print advertising and digital advertising in more than 100 regional outlets each week for six months to help local papers survive. he advertising boost will also help the government get the message out to Victorians that we all have a role to play in slowing the spread of the virus. Premier Daniel Andrews said the immediate and reliable source of income will help newspapers – which are the public record of towns and regions throughout Victoria – get through the worst of the crisis and rebuild. “We’re giving regional papers the certainty and support they need to keep writing, keep printing and keep employing Victorians,” he said. “We need to get the message out to every corner of the state – stay home, protect the health system and save lives. his investment will help us do that. “Coronavirus does not discriminate – so it’s vital every Victorian knows what to do to protect themselves and their loved ones, wherever they live.”

Here in the City of Melton, infection numbers have remained low and that’s a credit to all of you who are doing the right thing. I’m really proud to see our community prioritising health and staying safe. Please keep up the good work and remember, this strange new normal is only temporary but of course very necessary right now. Immunisation sessions continue Is your child due for their immunisations, or are you eligible for a free flu vaccination? Our staff are following the latest advice on staying safe during the COVID-19 pandemic and we’re asking those attending our immunisation sessions to follow some precautions as well.

Council’s regular immunisation sessions are still running and we’ve scheduled additional sessions to help meet the demand for the flu vaccine. During the COVID-19 pandemic, you can access these sessions at the Melton Community Hall and the Caroline Springs Leisure Centre. All other centres are closed for now.

The sessions are for well babies, parents, and individuals, so if you’re feeling sick, please stay home. Please minimise the number of people attending – only one parent to attend per baby/child being vaccinated, and avoid bringing siblings.

Those eligible for our free 2020 influenza (flu) vaccine, under the National Immunisation Program are: • children aged 6 months to under 5 years of age • all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people • people with certain chronic medical illnesses including chronic asthma, heart disease, diabetes and kidney disease • adults 65 years of age and over • pregnant women

Life’s never bin better Sharon Cutajar from Wyndham Vale donned some Darth Vader apparel.

Putting the bins out has never looked so good. Star Weekly put a call out on Facebook last week, asking for photos of residents who have dressed up to take out their bins out during the coronavirus pandemic. We were overwhelmed with the response and loved seeing all your photos. Sally Hanley said that she dressed up as a dinosaur to put out her bins. Ms Hanley said her father passed away on March 1, when the pandemic started to hit home across the world. “Since the irst of March, nothing has been right, the whole world is upside down, and people are freaking out,” she said. “Two of my friends, who don’t know each other, saw the bin isolation page on Facebook and they challenged me to wear my T-Rex costume to put the bin out.” Ms Hanley said her husband took photos of the occasion, while her daughter recorded it. “I work in childcare at Wallaby Childcare Centre, and I’m a student with Dynamic Performers Australia, so these days I’m not exactly shy, unlike in my younger years,” she said. “I like to make people smile, and if I can help someone forget their troubles for just a moment, then me dressing as a T-Rex was totally worth it.”

Airport hit hard by COVID-19 Melbourne Airport has revealed the devastating impact COVID-19 has had on the business. Passenger numbers in March were down by 44 per cent compared to the same time last year. he airport recorded its lowest international passenger igure since June 2010 and its lowest domestic numbers since February 2004. Chief executive Lyell Strambi described the pandemic as the worst crisis to hit the airport in 30 years. “he devastation that COVID-19 is having on the entire aviation industry is unparalleled,” he said. “Tourism, particularly air travel, was one of the irst sectors hit and we expect it to be one of 14 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 28 April, 2020

the last industries to emerge from restrictions. “he international traveller market was completely devastated … we recorded the worst year-on-year international growth in the airport’s history, surpassing all other shocks to date including 9/11 and SARS.” Mr Strambi said the March igures mask the full extend of COVID-19 and the trend for the end of the month suggests April is on a trajectory for a 97 per cent drop compared to

the same time last year. “he decline in travellers not only afects airlines but airports as well, as airports collect aeronautical fees on a per-passenger basis. “Of course, the loss in passengers is felt many times over, it’s not just one less person lying but also one less person buying a meal or cofee, one less purchasing retail items and one less catching transport.” He said the crisis facing Virgin Airlines, which went into voluntary administration last week, was also cause for major concern and called for action. “he Virgin situation is potentially another seismic shock to domestic aviation in Australia, on top of the demand destruction brought

about by COVID-19. “We know aviation is resilient, but the combination of the health pandemic and the economic crisis is unprecedented. It requires an unprecedented response from our industry together with state and federal governments.” Mr Strambi said the airport would remain open to support essential travel and to help bring Australians home. It would also ensure goods, including medical supplies, could move in and out of Victoria. However Mr Strambi warned it may be some time until things bounce back fully. Tate Papworth

By Laura Michell As you get into the routine of living in lockdown, spare a thought for your four-legged friend who might just be struggling with the changes to its world. With many people now working from home, children distance learning at home, and families opting to self-isolate, pets have suddenly found themselves with their owners 24/7. For many, this is a signiicant change to their routine and vets are urging pet parents to stop and think about how the coronavirus crisis might be afecting their furry family members. Second Chance Animal Rescue (SCAR) founder Marisa Debattista says it is not uncommon for cats and dogs to be feeling a little out of sorts at the moment. “Pets are going to be a little confused at the moment as their routine has changed,” she says. “A little bit of routine is very, very important. People need to ensure they are still walking their pets. “People should also be leaving and coming back at certain times so pets don’t have issues with separation anxiety [when lockdown is lited]. “Enrichment is also very important, especially for dogs. If you can’t walk your dog as much at the moment, make sure they are still getting stimulation in the backyard.” However, Debattista says the upside to owners spending more time at home with their pets is that they are making time to schedule vet check-ups and vaccinations. SCAR’s Craigieburn-based community animal hospital recently launched a kerbside vet service, allowing people to take their pet to the vet without having to leave their car. RSPCA Victoria chief veterinarian Emma Bronts says the health and wellbeing of pets is just as important as that of any other family member. She says minimising your pet’s contact with other animals is key. “Remember that pets need to practice social distancing like the rest of their family. Since our pets don’t know that, you need to help them keep their distance from other people and animals.” While Dr Bronts says there is “no evidence” pets can spread COVID-19, she is urging owners to ensure they maintain good hygiene. “As always, it is advisable to wash your hands with soap and water ater contact with pets. his protects you against various common

You should continue to wash pet food and water bowls regularly.” Another beneit of life in lockdown is that shelters are seeing a rise in people looking to adopt a pet. A spokeswoman for he Lost Dogs Home, which houses impounded pets from across the west, says cats, in particular, are being adopted at a faster rate than in previous months. “We are certainly receiving many more

inquiries and requests for meet and greets with our animals with a view to adoption. “Last weekend, we received over 3000 phone and email inquiries for our adoptions team.” he RSPCA, which runs the Epping Animals Welfare Facility on behalf of Whittlesea, Moreland and Darebin councils, is also reporting a rise in pet adoptions. Like many shelters, the RSPCA has changed its adoption processes to appointment-only to ensure it can adhere to social distancing requirements. Meanwhile, some shelters and rescue groups are bracing for a surge in surrendered pets. PETstock Assist charity and events

Zoom in on learning By Tate Papworth hird year marketing student Jessica Almenara always pictured the moment of relief and exuberance she’d feel walking out of her last class. Now the 25-year-old says she’s more likely to be sitting in front of her computer, donning pyjamas, when her three years of hard work inally inish. Ms Almenara attends Victoria University and said things snowballed rapidly when COVID-19 began to spread in Victoria. “At VU they do a block learning module, where you focus on one unit for a four-week period,” she said. “We did our irst four-week block as normal [this year], but then ater that everything switched to online.” She admits it’s taken a bit of getting used to. “It’s interesting … I’d never used Zoom before and now all our classes are through it,”

she said. “he irst few classes were a bit of an adjustment, but they brought in a new rule to encourage us to turn our cameras on, which has been nice for interaction.” “Other than that we still have team groups and group work, but that’s all done over

Homeschool predator warning A former Victorian police detective and founder of child abuse and traicking charity Project Karma is calling on all parents to remain vigilant when it comes to their child’s online usage, as the rise of online predators sparks major concerns. Project founder Glen Hulley said COVID-19 restrictions could increase the risk of children being exposed to online predators. “hanks to COVID-19, young kids are spending more and more time online, which makes them more vulnerable to online predators,” Mr Hulley said. “In normal circumstances, there can be on average 750,000 predators online. We have seen this grow exponentially since isolation was introduced around the world.” He said that while Australian students are largely undergoing homeschooling during term two, the risk of being attacked or manipulated online is growing every day and parents should be vigilant. “Kids are spending more time online because mum and dad are working from home too and want to keep them occupied,” he said. “he lack of awareness and policing around online use is a major concern and opens up the greater risk of kids being stalked and predated online, especially since the span of control to moderate and monitor them is too wide.” In response, Project Karma is running an emergency appeal to help roll out online tools to help teachers, parents and children stay safe and vigilant. Women experiencing or at risk of family violence will continue to have access to support services following a funding boost for women’s health services in Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs. Twelve women’s health services across Victoria, including Women’s Health West and Women’s Health in the North, will share in $3 million funding over the next two years to help them continue their work in preventing family violence. Minister for Prevention of Family Violence, Gabrielle Williams said the funding would ensure the services could continue their vital work to deliver prevention of family violence training, advice and support to organisations in their local areas, including local government and health services. According to the state government, family violence is a national emergency, with one woman killed by a current or former partner each week. Family violence is the leading cause of death, disability and illness in Victorian women aged 15 to 44-years-old, the state government said. “Coronavirus has created an unprecedented situation around the world, including here in Victoria – in these uncertain times, prevention of family violence remains a critical priority for our government,” Ms Williams said. “Research shows that during times of crisis, family violence can increase.”

Sport won’t be the same By Russell Bennett Sporting clubs right across the nation need to be prepared for what’s coming. As the world continues to come to grips with the magnitude of the Covid-19 pandemic, its sporting codes – both at professional, and community level – are planning for their return at some stage in 2020. In making that call, they’re rightfully following the advice of the various government and health bodies. But there’s a stark reality facing some clubs that a return this year, to a drastically-reduced season – could cause much more inancial harm than good. Inluential West Gippsland footy igure, Cora Lynn’s Terry Dillon – through his company TD Solutions Sports Administration – has developed the ‘Community Football Covid-19 Financial Assessment Tool’ in conjunction with the AFL. he AFL has then forwarded it to all community clubs across Australia, and it’s been shared with all state sport and recreation departments across the nation. Efectively, it’s designed to help clubs clearly understand the efects that the coronavirus could have on their inancial bottom line. While there’s currently a working group in place conducting a Victoria-wide review into the salary cap and points systems in light of the pandemic, Dillon’s personal view is that caps should drop from 65 to 75 per cent across the state. Dillon said a statewide, proportionate salary cap shit is “critical”, and explained why. “Playing half a season doesn’t mean clubs get half the revenue,” he said. “We’d all love for the season to proceed – given the obvious community beneits, and the return to normality it would provide.

“here’s no one who wants footy and netball to return this year more than me, but there’s a greater risk for many clubs’ viability if the season proceeds. “If we don’t take the hard line here at the current time there will be more clubs in inancial trouble than not at the end of either this year or next. Sadly, some won’t recover.” TD Solutions has predicted that up to 80 per cent of clubs won’t be ready for what’s to come, and a good percentage of those will end up in debt. Dillon also predicted a participation drop-of of sorts, with the retirement of some senior players likely hastened by the new environment. “AFL Victoria has a diicult job in balancing regional clubs’ need for players to travel to play, and their own viability,” he explained. “And there’s a need to protect regional clubs. “here’s an argument for zero player payments for 2020 if the season does begin. here are just too many unknowns. Drastic

times require drastic measures.” While Dillon acknowledged that would cause a huge adjustment for players and coaches at a community level, he said there’d be a short-term impact on the game for a long-term beneit. At one stage this year, TD Solutions sampled 30 community football netball clubs in a span of 45 days. Incredibly, 25 of those were in debt. “Two thirds of clubs were already under inancial pressure pre-coronavirus,” Dillon said. “So what about now, or post-corona?” Dillon urged all clubs to utilise the Community Football Covid-19 Financial Assessment Tool to identify the shit in inancial models moving forward, and to plan accordingly. “Complete the free model and ind out where your shortfall is,” he said. “Act now, and get moving. “Eighty per cent of clubs have not done a budget, post-Covid-19. hat is a red lag for all community clubs. “We need to focus on the long-term survival of clubs, but the next 12 months is a critical period.” Based of the free club inancial estimator on the TDS website, it’s estimated that some clubs will experience a more than 70 per cent revenue drop in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, given negative impacts to sponsorship, fundraising, membership, registrations, consumer disposable income, and a range of other factors – including potentially starting a season in the winter months. “If the clubs do nothing, their revenue shortfall will be in that range, however we’ve provided six here-and-now revenue solutions that will reduce the clubs’ exposure,” Dillon said. “It’s one thing to identify the problem, but we’re also helping with the solution.”

Former AFL Gippsland commissioner John White explained just what the Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted for community clubs. “What it has done, particularly in country football, is expose our vulnerability to external factors – things we haven’t got control of, but things we aren’t making any contingency plans for,” he said. “We’ve not been aware of these outside inluences, which can really damage us. “Here we are, in what should have been the opening rounds of the season, with no prospect of playing football or netball in the near future and we’ve got clubs that are seriously in doubt about their inancial futures. “Without a contingency plan, and no real position of inancial strength to fall back on, there are going to be some massive problems.” White said, in his opinion, many clubs would prefer not to resume at all this season if the earliest commencement date for the season is May 31. “I’ve heard the terminology used several times now that to play would be inancial suicide for a lot of clubs,” he added. Dillon is running a series of webinars to educate clubs on how to minimise their exposure during the pandemic. TD Solutions brings his lifetime’s work including working for 17 years at AFL clubs such as Collingwood (as chief inancial oicer under Eddie McGuire), Hawthorn (as chief operating oicer under Ian Dicker and Jef Kennett, and acting chief executive), and St Kilda (as chief operating oicer) - to the fore to help those running local sporting clubs.
